Balltongue Lyrics

Balltongue
  • This is rumored to be about oral sex, but it isn't. It is about a man who had to work with the band on a T-Shirt design. He either had a pierced tongue or a wart on his tongue and he gave the band a really hard time.
  • During the chorus, lead singer Jon Davis shouts a lot of unintelligible things. He claims it is just gibberish, but many fans believe there are actual words being said. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 2)

    Aerials Lyrics

    Life is a waterfall
    We're one in the river
And one again after the fall

    Swimming through the void
    We hear the word
    We lose ourselves
    But we find it all?

Cause we are the ones that want to play
    Always want to go
But you never want to stay

And we are the ones that want to choose
    Always want to play
But you never want to lose

    Aerials, in the sky
    When you lose small mind
    You free your life

    Life is a waterfall
    We drink from the river
Then we turn around and put up our walls

    Swimming through the void
    We hear the word
    We lose ourselves
    But we find it all?

Cause we are the ones that want to play
    Always want to go
But you never want to stay

And we are the ones that want to choose
    Always want to play
But you never want to lose

    Aerials, in the sky
    When you lose small mind
    You free your life
    Aerials, so up high
    When you free your eyes
    Eternal prize
    Aerials, in the sky
    When you lose small mind
    You free your life
    Aerials, so up high
    When you free your eyes
    Eternal prize

    Aerials
  • This song is about how people can lose their identities and become just like everyone else. Some lyric analysis:
"Life is a waterfall,we're one in the river, one again after the fall." - We all start off the same and we all end up the same.
"Swimming through the void, we hear the words,we lose ourselves, but we find it all." - As we go through life we are told lessons, but we ignore them. We forget who we really are in the mix of seeking the synthetic lifestyle, and that's the price to lose who we really are.
"'Cause we are the ones that wanna play, always want to go, but you never want to stay." - We always want to be part of the scene. We strive for what we want and when we get it, it still does not satisfy.
"And we are the ones that want to choose, always wanna play, but you never wanna lose." - We want and want. We do whatever we can but if trouble is ever near we do whatever we can to maintain innocence.
"When you lose small mind you free your life." - When we stop to see the full picture is when we really have control of our lives.
"Life is a waterfall, we drink from the river then we turn around and put up our walls." - We take and take and in the end we give nothing. This shows how greedy, oblivious and inconsiderate people can be. (thanks, joe - visa, CA)
  • The final track on the Toxicity album and the third single. The lyrics were written by Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian. Malakian wrote the music. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ)
  • On the CD, right after the song ends, another song called "Arto" comes on. "Arto" is based on a traditional Armenian song with a chant that is played at funerals in the Armenian community. It is named "Arto" because their friend Arto Tuncboyaciyan played a duduk (a reed instrument similar to an oboe) on the track. Daron and Serj's grandparents both wept when they heard it. (thanks, Anthony - Willow Wood, OH)
  • Daron Malakian once said that this song is about the beauty of retarded children and how they see the world. They have also said that it is about nothing. (thanks, Ankabandoodoo - lala, MT)
  • The band performed this on Saturday Night Live in 2005. The first song they performed, "B.Y.O.B.," caused some controversy because they swore on the air.

  • This song finds Sean "Slug" Daley rapping about how people have a knee jerk to artists like Kanye West who shows passion as a human. He explained to Artist Direct : "Kanye, he's really the best example. Because the media industrial complex totally jumped on Kanye and turned him into some sort of, almost a bad guy. And it's like this dude is not a bad guy. This dude is just a passionate guy. I don't know what to say about that. I don't know that the world is ever not going to be intimidated by passion."

    Clown
  • This is about how people try to be something they're not in order to be accepted instead of just being themselves. What inspired lead singer Jon Davis to write the lyrics, though, was an early gig where a skinhead was booing them and telling them to "go back to Bakersfield!" Jon kneeled down to hear him and the guy took a swing at him. The skinhead was all tattooed and looked like a clown, so that was the inspiration for the title of the song and also the line "Hit me clown, because I'm not from your town."
  • This was the fourth (and final) single released from the band's first album, and like all Korn songs, is a band composition. The group's first two albums were recorded at Indigo Ranch Studios in Malibu, California, which their guitarist Brian "Head" Welch tells us was a great place to work. "It was in the hills and it was all like vintage stuff," he said. "There was some partying and stuff like that, so some of those memories are kind of blah. But the creative process was really cool to experience."

Unfortunately, the studio burned down in 2007 wildfires that also destroyed about 50 homes in the area.
  • The video for this song was Korn's third, following "Blind" and "Shoots And Ladders." All three were directed by McG, who would later direct the first two Charlie's Angels movies and the TV show Chuck.

  • Michael "Eyedea" Larsen (1981-2010) was an American underground rapper from St. Paul, Minneapolis who toured extensively as second MC and support DJ for Atmosphere. Eyedea died in his sleep on October 16, 2010. The cause of death was ruled by the the Ramsey County medical examiner's office to be an accident, from "opiate toxicity."
  • Atmosphere rapper Sean "Slug" Daley penned this song as a way of expressing the phases he went through when dealing with his pal's death. Asked by Artist Direct if it was a difficult song for him to write, he replied: "I think the most difficult part about making that track was the timing because you can't really force a song like that to come out. So, I had to wait for when it felt right to write. I was consistently being asked by fans and younger people like, 'When are you gonna make a song for Eyedea?' and 'Why don't you make a song for Eyedea? You owe us a song for Eyedea.' That's a weird pressure. What do you mean I owe you something about my feelings? You know what I mean? It's kind of a weird position to have people tell you, 'You owe us this, I can't believe you haven't done this yet,' without realizing this s—t doesn't just write itself. There's no switch that you can turn on and off. So for me, the difficult part was in waiting for when it happened."

"Once I sat down to write it, no, it wasn't difficult to write because I could've written 12 songs about Eyedea," Slug continued. "It's one of those things where there's no way to fit it all in three verses. There's so much material that I actually had to figure out what material to use and what not to use to present the point I was trying to present. You know at the end of the day, the song 'Flicker' is not really about Eyedea. It's about me and my coping mechanisms. It's about me and discussing the different stages that I went through after he passed away, much like a song that I did from a few years ago that was called 'Yesterday'"

    Crawling Lyrics

    Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
    Fear is how I fall
    Confusing what is real

There's something inside me that pulls beneath the surface
    Consuming, confusing
This lack of self control I fear is never ending
    Controlling
    I can't seem
    To find myself again
    My walls are closing in
(Without a sense of confidence I'm convinced
That there's just too much pressure to take)
    I've felt this way before
    So insecure

    Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
    Fear is how I fall
    Confusing what is real

Discomfort, endlessly has pulled itself upon me
    Distracting, reacting
Against my will I stand beside my own reflection
    It's haunting how I can't seem

    To find myself again
    My walls are closing in
(Without a sense of confidence I'm convinced
That there's just too much pressure to take)
    I've felt this way before
    So insecure

    Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
    Fear is how I fall
    Confusing what is real

    Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
    Fear is how I fall
    Confusing, confusing what is real

There's something inside me that pulls beneath the surface
    Consuming (confusing what is real)
This lack of self control I fear is never ending
    Controlling (confusing what is real)

  • In the video, the girl (Katelyn Rosaasen) is physically abused by her father. At the beginning, we can see all her bruises. Many of the lyrics demonstrate how hard it is to break the cycle of abuse ("These wounds, they will not heal" and "It's haunting, how I can't seem to find myself again, my walls are closing in"), and how self-confidence is crushed. The blue crystal background closes in on her at the beginning of the first chorus - this shows an emotional shell that she has built around her. The thick make-up is like a mask, trying to hide what's going on inside. The septum ring is designed to link with Chester's lip ring. When the girl walks away from her boyfriend, it's because she's too scared to get close to people. This is also true for the high school bathroom scene. When Chester sings, "Against my will I stand beside my own reflection," he and Katelyn are looking at each other. She looks like she wants to get out of the shell she's in. She also sees painful memories from her past in the crystal. When the second chorus starts, the crystal begins to break and chunks of it are flying about - this is her shell falling down. It represents her father's departure, as does her smiling at the end with the roses in the vase. She's not wearing the thick make-up because she doesn't feel like she needs the protection of a mask - she's got nothing to hide from.
  • A lot of what Chester is singing about are side effects of taking methamphetamines - a drug he used throughout his teens. The anxiety, hallucinations and a feeling of things crawling under his skin. (thanks, Abbey - Essex, England, for above for above 2)
  • This won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance.
  • This was the second single off Hybrid Theory, the best selling album of 2001.
  • The video was nominated for Best Rock video on MTV's Video Music Awards. It lost to Limp Bizkit's "Rollin." (thanks, William - Indiana, IN, for above 4)
  • In the CD booklet, the lyrics "These wounds, they will not heal" were incorrectly written as "Consuming all I feel."
  • There is a remixed version of this song on Reanimation, their 2002 CD which contained remixes of the songs from Hybrid Theory and a couple of new songs. The remix features Staind's Aaron Lewis on vocals. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 2)
  • Chester Bennington in Rolling Stone magazine 2002: "The song is about taking responsibility for your actions. I don't say 'you' at any point. It's about how I'm the reason that I feel this way. There's something inside me that pulls me down."
  • Chester Bennington claims it's hard to perform this song live due to his own personal experience similar to the problems in the song. He feels as though his past drug addiction, to crystal meth and other hard drugs such as cocaine, is literally under his skin. In an interview he said: "'Crawling' has caused me the most trouble live more than any other song. 'Crawling' is about feeling like I had no control over myself in terms of drugs and alcohol..." Well this is not a lesson
And this is not a cry for help
And this is not a test
And this is not for someone else

Yeah, this one's for you and everything you do
For every time I said this one's forever
And this one's for me, I'm starting to believe
You and I were born to be together

And I can feel it right now, just where I want to be
I reach out, you're right in front of me
We are unstoppable, we are unbreakable, we are invincible together
And I feel Alive with you
And I feel alive with you

Well this is not a battle
And this is not a field of blood
And this is not as easy,
Not as easy as it ever was

Yeah, this one's for you and everything you do
For every time I said this one's forever
And this one's for me, I'm starting to believe
You and I were born to be together

And I can feel it right now, just where I want to be
I reach out, you're right in front of me
We are unstoppable, we are unbreakable, we are invincible together
And I feel alive with you
And I feel alive with you

    This is not a devil
And this is not a child of god
And this is not a message
And this is not a double shot
Hell, I'm just loving you, babe, with everything I got

And I can feel it right now, just where I want to be
I reach out, you're right in front of me

  • Augustana mainman Dan Layus told AbsolutePunk the story of this song: "That was a really important song, not only for a refreshing direction of Augustana as a songwriter, but just as a human, as a person," he said. "I was just in desperate need of writing something that felt good. That was at a time where I had turned a lot of things around. I've been sober for nearly three years now, not quite but we're getting there. At that time I was freshly on the wagon there, getting my life together and figuring out how to live my life in a really positive way. I needed to write and perform something every night that felt great and that wasn't so blue and wasn't so down. That song is what came out."

"It flowers from being sober, I think," Layus continued. "It felt good to feel nervous at shows again. It felt good to feel butterflies and actually not be numb to everything around me all day and night, to actually be scared or excited or nervous, all those feelings that come back that I had sort of stuffed away and numbed for a lot of years. That's kind of what that's saying, and then it's also saying in the verses that this isn't a message and this isn't a lesson for anybody else. It's my experience. This isn't saying that this is going to work for everyone, it's just saying this is me and this is my experience. This is what I've been through, and now it feels so good to feel alive again. I know that road has been walked before, and that alludes to Life Imitating Life as well. It all ties together."

    The New York Times
  • Lead singer Art Alexakis wrote this about politics and events going on in America. It ties in the economy, the presidential election of 2000, and the September 11 attacks. He was also moved by the story of Laci Peterson, a pregnant woman who was found dead in California, and by an adoption law in Florida that has since been overturned. The law required any woman who did not know the paternity of her baby and wanted to give it up for adoption to buy ads in newspapers announcing her sexual past so the father could be found and have a say in the adoption. Known as "The Scarlet Letter Law," it gave custody to biological fathers regardless of their background, which could be disastrous for the child. Art has little patience for fathers who don't care for their kids. He made this clear in the song "Father Of Mine."
  • Alexakis: "These things in the last couple of years have made me pissed off at the complacency in our country. I think there's a lot of darkness there, but I think we can do better, that there's light at the end of the tunnel."
  • The New York Times is the only newspaper Art really likes. He says they "have the balls to stand apart from a lot of the more conservative papers," although he was disappointed with their coverage of the war in Iraq.
  • When it comes to politics, Alexakis will express his views when asked, but doesn't use the stage as a soapbox, which got The Dixie Chicks in trouble around the time this was released. At a concert in London, one of the chicks said, "We're ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas." The quote was printed by a British newspaper and The Dixie Chicks were quickly banned by many country radio stations and labeled "unpatriotic." Even though they expressed support for US troops and apologized for the remark, their album sales declined sharply and some radio stations organized events to destroy their albums.
  • This is the last song listed on the CD, but a minute after it ends, there is a hidden song called "White Noise." Alexakis describes it as "A song about pure acceptance or love of a friend." He included it as a hidden song because he wanted it on the CD, but it didn't fit the sequence of the album. He feels it helps end the album on a positive note. (Check out our interview with Art Alexakis.)

  • This song was inspired by a rough time that the band went through in 2013. Vocalist Chris Robertson recalled to Artist Direct : "It all came back to a lot of things I was dealing with in terms of my anxiety, severe depression, and prescription addictions. That song is the story of the hell the band went through to get to where we're at today. I went to walking out of my house with a loaded shotgun to finding God and living a life that's completely different from what I was used to."

"My favorite line in that song is, 'Black clouds turn to blue and crucified like the truth,'" he added. "I don't think a song has ever name-checked Jesus like that. It's pretty awesome, man."

I close my eyes when I get too sad
I think thoughts that I know are bad
Close my eyes and I count to ten
Hope it's over when I open them

I want the things that I had before
Like a Star Wars poster on my bedroom door
I wish I could count to ten
    Make everything be Wonderful again

Hope my mom and I hope my dad
Will figure out why they get so mad
Hear them scream, I hear them fight
Say bad words that make me want to cry

Close my eyes when I go to bed
And I dream of angels that make me smile
I feel better when I hear them say
    Everything will be wonderful someday

Promises mean everything when you're little
    And the world's so big
    I just don't understand how
You can smile with all those tears in your eyes
Tell me everything is wonderful now

(Na na na na na na na)

Please don't tell me everything is wonderful now

I go to school and I run and play
I tell the kids that it's all okay
I like to laugh so my friends won't know
When the bell rings I just don't want to go home

Go to my room and I close my eyes
I make believe that I have a new life
I don't believe you when you say
    Everything will be wonderful someday

Promises mean everything when you're little
And the world is so big
    I just don't understand how
You can smile with all those tears in your eyes
When you tell me everything is wonderful now

I don't want to hear you tell me everything is wonderful now

I don't want to hear you say
    That I will understand someday
    No, no, no, no
I don't want to hear you say
We both have grown in a different way
    No, no, no, no
I don't want to meet your friends
And I don't want to start over again
I just want to my life to be the same
Just like it used to be
    Some days I hate everything
    I hate everything
    Everyone and everything
Please don't tell me everything is wonderful now

I don't want to hear you tell me everything is wonderful now

    Wonderful
  • Lead singer Art Alexakis wrote this from a child's perspective. He was dealing with a recent divorce and the effect it had on his daughter, Anna. He says, "I was a child of a broken marriage, my daughter was the child of a broken marriage, and it was hard to watch it happen to her. That was me trying to make sense of it."
  • Alexakis: "It's one of those songs where I take my experiences as a kid, some experiences of some friends of mine, and kind of put myself into this kid's place. It's not really autobiographical but it's coming from a place that I understand very well. My characters tend to have aspects of my personality. It wouldn't be real if it didn't have a part of my reality."
  • Along with "Father Of Mine" and "Santa Monica," Alexakis considers this one of his most personal songs. He used to think these kind of songs were too serious and intense to be hits, but has found they strike chords with people and do very well. (Check out our interview with Art Alexakis.)

    Remember Me Lyrics

    Smoke another cigarette
Reminisce on a girl I met
Watch another day pass me bye
A country road that takes me home
The only place that I've ever known
I sure do love that Rocky Mountain sky

Just like the seasons I'm gonna change
Like the clouds I'm rollin' on
Hey, Merle Haggard I know what you mean
When you say sing me back home

Got my wheels stretched out on a road
Them yellow lines that free my soul
Mama always said that I was born to roam
    Headed down the highway
    Livin' life the free way
Today I'm here but tomorrow I'm gone

Just like the seasons I'm gonna change
Like the clouds I'm rollin' on
Hey, Merle Haggard I know what you mean
When you say sing me back home

    I've smoked another cigarette
Reminisced on the girls I've met
Watched another day pass me bye

Just like the seasons I'm gonna change
Like the clouds I'm rollin' on
Hey, Merle Haggard I know what you mean
When you say sing me back home

    Remember Me
  • Lead vocalist Chris Robertson wrote this Magic Mountain track for his late grandpa. He recalled to Artist Direct ; "When we started doing pre-production on this album, Joe Barresi flew in on a Sunday. My grandfather had been in the hospital. He was my mom's dad. He was there, and he wasn't given a very good chance. He actually passed away the Sunday that Joe flew in. We were doing pre-production. We only had five days to do any work on the songs before we went to the studio."

"Wednesday was my Grandpa's funeral.," Robertson continued. "We worked all night on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, I decided instead of sitting around the house and having a pity party I'd rather record with the guys. We sat around, and it was obvious I didn't want to work on any of the songs we had written. I didn't want to deal with any of that s--t. I tuned my guitar a little funny, and I started playing the intro part. It came to me right off the top of my head. There was the intro riff and the verse."

"We wrote the music for that song in about fifteen or twenty minutes," he added. "I went outside and sat down. They were jamming on that verse. I pulled my phone out and wrote some notes. I started typing. When I finished my cigarette, I said, 'Why don't you guys check this out? I think it could be cool.' That was the day of my grandpa's funeral, and it was a song for him. They were working class people who lived a simple way of life. They never had a lot, but they made do with what they've had. I love that song. It really means a lot to me."

I Will Buy You A New Life Lyrics

Here is the money that I owe you
Yes you can pay the bills
    I will give you more
    When I get paid again

I hate those people who love to tell you
Money is the root of all that kills
    They have never been poor
They have never had the joy of a welfare christmas

I know we will never look back

You say you wake up crying
Yes and you don't know why
You get up and you go lay down
    Inside my baby's room

Yeah, I guess I'm doing OK
I moved in with the strangest guy
Can you believe he actually thinks
    That I am really alive

I will buy you a garden
    Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
    Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I Will Buy You A New Life
    Yes I will

Yes, I know all about that other guy
The handsome man with athletic thighs
I know about all the time before
With that obsessive little rich boy

They might make you think you're happy
Yeah maybe for a minute or two
    They can't make you laugh
No they can't make you feel the way that I do

I will buy you a garden
    Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
    Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I will buy you a new life
I will buy you a new life

I know we can never look back

Will you please let me stay the night
Will you please let me stay the night
    No one will ever know

I will buy you a garden
    Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
    Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I will buy you a new life

I will buy you a garden
    Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
    Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I will buy you a new life

I will buy you a new life
I will buy you a new life

I will buy you a new life
I will buy you a new life

I will buy you a new life
I will buy you a new life

I Will Buy You A New Life
  • This is a personal song written by lead singer Art Alexakis. When his daughter Anna was a baby, he and his ex-wife would go to a wealthy neighborhood in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon. They would look at the fancy houses, drive around and fantasize about living there. One day, after the success of Everclear, Art bought one of those houses and moved into the neighborhood.
  • Alexakis: "It wasn't about the money, it was about a different kind of life, giving all of yourself to another person. It's the ultimate romantic song to me." (Check out our interview with Art Alexakis.)
