The Way I Feel Inside Lyrics

Should I try to hide
The Way I Feel Inside
My heart for you?

Would you say that you
Would try to love me too?

In your mind
Could you ever be
Really close to me?

I can tell the way you smile
If I feel that I
Could be certain then
I would say the things I want to say tonight

But 'til I can see
That you'd really care for me
I will dream
That someday you'll be
Really close to me

I can tell the way you smile
If I feel that I
Could be certain then
I would say the things I want to say tonight

But 'til I can see
That you'd really care for me
I'll keep trying to hide
The way I feel inside

The Way I Feel Inside
  • This song was written by keyboardist/vocalist Rod Argent while The Zombies were on tour in 1964. Bandmate Chris White remembers: "Rod wrote one of the songs on the toilet on the Isley Brothers tour, and I think it was 'The Way I Feel Inside,' ironically enough! He was late for the bus; it was always 'You have to be on time for the bus' on that tour."
  • An early version of this a capella number featured a full band, but it was scrapped in favor of Colin Blunstone 's lone voice, heightened by the sounds of footsteps and a tossed coin (which can only be heard on the mono recording). (thanks, DeeTheWriter - Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation, for above 2)
  • This song was featured Wes Anderson's 2004 dramedy The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

    Already Gone Lyrics

Well, I heard some people talking just the other day
And they said you were gonna put me on a shelf
Well, let me tell you I've got some news for you
And you'll soon find out it's true
And then you'll have to eat your lunch all by yourself
    Coz I'm al-ready gone, and I'm fee-ling strong
    I will si-ing this vict'ry song, woo-oo-oo, my my, woo-oo-oo
The letter that you wrote me made me stop and wonder why
But I guess you felt like you had to set things right
Just remember this my girl when you look up in the sky
You can see the stars and still not see the light, that's right
    And I'm-al-ready gone, and I'm fee-eeling strong
    I will si-ing this vict'ry song, woo-oo-oo, my my, woo-oo-oo
Well, I know it wasn't you who held me down
Heaven knows it wasn't you who set me free
So oftentimes it happens that we live our lives in chains
That we never even know we have the key
Me, I'm Already Gone, and I'm feeling strong
I will sing this vict'ry song, coz I'm already gone
    Coz I'm al-ready gone, and I'm fee-eling strong
    I will si-ing this vict'ry song, coz I'm al-ready gone
Yes, I'm already gone, already gone (awright, nighty night)
    Already gone, already gone

    Already Gone
  • This is one of the few Eagles songs not written by any member of the band. It was written by the songwriters Jack Tempchin and Robb Strandlund, who were friends of the Eagles. Tempchin also wrote "Peaceful Easy Feeling," which appeared on the first Eagles album.
  • Tempchin sent this to Glenn Frey to pitch it as an Eagles song. Frey had just come off of a relationship, so the lyrics about getting over a breakup were probably meaningful to him. (thanks, Bill - Johnstown, PA)
  • Frey sang lead on this. The song features twin guitar solos by Frey and Don Felder , who was new to the band. The Eagles also used twin guitar solos on "Hotel California."
  • This was one of the first songs the Eagles recorded with producer Bill Szymczyk. Their previous albums, and some of On The Border, were recorded in London with the venerable British producer Glyn Johns. Recording with a new producer at nearby Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles was a huge relief for Glenn Frey, who didn't get on with Johns. "I was much more comfortable in the studio with Bill, and he was more than willing to let everyone stretch a bit," he said. "'Already Gone' - that's me being happier; that's me being free."

    Fishin' for Something
  • Rachele Lynae wrote this song with her friend Hannah Bethel after the two were exasperated by pushy guys trying to bust up their girl group on the dance floor. In our interview with Rachele , she explained: "It would be about that time of the night where the guy probably had too many drinks or something, I don't know. And they'd come up like, 'Hey, what are you doing?' And I'm like, 'Dude, it's 12:30. So after this, I'm going home. I'm not hanging out. No, thank you, I don't want to go mudding in the middle of the night with someone I just met. But thank you for asking.' [Laughing] Just some of the funniest things.

So Hannah and I wrote that song sitting down going, 'We've got to write about these guys.' So we wrote this and we laughed a lot and giggled and felt like we were pretty clever."
  • Inspired by this song, Rachele recorded a short YouTube video of the Best Worst Pick Up Lines where she endures a bunch of guys trying to hit on her with ridiculous come-ons.

    Witchy Woman Lyrics

    Witchy Woman
  • Eagles guitarist Bernie Leadon started writing this song when he was a member of The Flying Burrito Brothers. Once Bernie joined the Eagles, he and Don Henley finished the song in Eagles fashion. It was one of the first songs Henley wrote.
  • Leadon and Henley wrote this about a number of women they had met. It is not meant to portray the woman as devilish, but as more of a seductress.
  • The Eagles was the group's first album. It was produced by Glyn Johns, an Englishman who had previously worked with The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. They recorded it at Olympic Studios in London in just three weeks; the group became far less efficient over time - their 1979 album The Long Run took more than two years to make.
  • According to the liner notes for The Very Best of the Eagles, the song originated with guitarist Bernie Leadon playing a "strange, minor-key riff that sounded sort of like a Hollywood movie version of Indian music." The song's lyrics didn't develop until Henley went down with a flu and high fever while he was reading a book about Zelda Fitzgerald. "I think that figured into the mix somehow - along with amorphous images of girls I had met at the Whisky and the Troubadour," he recalled.

    Two for One Special
  • This comedic cheating revenge song is a duet with Rachele Lynae and Country music singer Jamie O'Neal , who also produced Rachele's debut. It was written by the two singers along with songwriter Shaye Smith.
  • Rachele explained the inspiration behind this song in our 2014 interview : "It was inspired by a situation I had with a friend where we had both starting dating guys - this was a while back - and we started talking about what they were like and she would say, 'Oh, he's just like the guy I'm seeing.' And then we ended up finding out in our conversation that they had the same first and middle name. And for half a second there, we were like, 'What?!' So we thought we might be dating the same guy. And then we realized we weren't.

But we ended up joking about it, saying, 'Oh, gosh, can you imagine what we would do if we found out we were dating the same guy?' So I came up with this song idea out of that situation called 'Two for One Special.'"

    Lyin' Eyes Lyrics

    Lyin' Eyes
  • This song is about a woman who cheats on her husband. She is very confused and down, and tells her husband she is going to see a friend when she is actually going to meet her lover. She goes across town to meet the boy with "Fiery eyes and dreams no one can steal."

She gets there and she falls into his arms, but has to leave to go back home. She swears someday she will come back forever, because she is happy there. As the song continues, she ponders her emotions - "She wonders, how it ever got this crazy..." She just wants to feel loved and happy but she is torn. (thanks, James - The Hideout, PA)
  • In the DVD Hell Freezes Over, the Eagles discussed this song's origins. When they were a struggling band in Los Angeles, they saw a lot of beautiful women around Hollywood who were married to wealthy, successful men, and wondered if they were unhappy. One night they were drinking in a bar (their favorite watering hole: Dan Tana's) when they spotted this stunning young woman; two steps behind her was a much older, fat, rich guy. As they were half laughing at them, Glenn Frey commented, "Look at her, she can't even hide those lyin eyes!"

Realizing they had a song title, the band members began grabbing for cocktail napkins to write down lyrics to go with that great observation.

In the History of the Eagles documentary, Don Henley offered a slightly different interpretation: "It was about all these girls that would come down to Dan Tana's looking beautiful. They'd be there from 8 O'clock until midnight having drinks with all of us rockers, then they'd go home because they were kept women."
  • Glenn Frey sang lead, Bernie Leadon was on lead guitar.
  • This won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
  • In 2008, an Irish prosecutor quoted the words to this song ("You can't hide those lyin' eyes...") in her closing statement at a trial involving the email lyingeyes98@yahoo.ie. The Dublin jury convicted Sharon Collins of conspiring to have her older partner and his two sons killed. Using the lyingeyes98 email, she contacted a hit man at hire_hitman@yahoo.com to do the deed, apparently unaware that emails can be traced.
  • According to Don Felder, who was a guitarist with the Eagles at the time, Glenn Frey was extremely particular about how he sang the first word in this song: "City."

"It would either be a little early, or a little late, or the 'T' would be too sharp," he told Ultimate Classic Rock. "But every time that word goes by now and I hear it, I can appreciate the time and dedication and perseverance that it took to get it perfect."

    We're miles away from nowhere
And the wind doesn't have a name
So call it what you want to call it
    Still blows down the lane

People tell me, I haven't changed at all
But I don't feel the same
And I bet you've had that feeling too
You just can't laugh all the time

    [Chorus]
And if the fires burn out there's only fire to blame
    (Hold Back the Rain)
No time for worry cause we're on the roam again.
    (hold back the rain)
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane
    (hold back the rain)
Not on your own so help me please, hold back the rain

So what if the words ain't rhyming
Did you think that it's just a game
I probably didn't even say that right
    And I really don't give a damn

    Okay go off and wander
    I'm guilty just the same
    Sometimes you're needed badly
    So please come back again

    [Chorus]

And if the stars burn out, theirs only fire to blame
    (hold back the rain)
No time for worry cause we're on the roam again.
    (hold back the rain)
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane
    (hold back the rain)
Not on your own so help me please, hold back the rain

    Hold Back the Rain
  • For two former members of Duran Duran, drugs in general - and cocaine in particular - proved too tempting to decline. Guitarist Andy Taylor became a full-blown cocaine addict rather quickly, and would battle the demons of drug addiction for many years before wresting himself free of its grip.

According to a VH1 Interview, lead singer Simon Le Bon became worried that John was "staying out too late, taking too many drugs, drinking too much, and going home with the wrong kinds of people." As any good songsmith does, Simon took his emotions and put pen to paper, writing a song in March of 1982 that would become recorded as "Hold Back the Rain."

After writing the song, Simon slipped the song under John's door, and claimed that as late as 1993 John had never mentioned the incident to him, or that he knew Simon wrote the song about him. The song did appear on the band's second album, Rio plus included as a B side to the single for "Save a Prayer. It would take many years before John would hear the plea in that song and get help for the drug problems that dogged him, but now he is clean. (thanks, DeeTheWriter - Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation)
  • After the band reunited in 2003, this song was brought back into the live rotation. John Taylor told Pop Matters: "Now, when we play it, there’s a feeling of, that’s what we do, you know? That song is what Duran Duran is all about."

Blow Up The Outside World Lyrics

Nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try
    Nothing is closing my eyes
Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight
And nothing seems to break me
No matter how hard I fall nothing can break me at all
Not one for giving up though not invincible I know

    I've givin' everything I need
I'd give you everything I own
I'd give in if it could at least be ours alone
    I've given everything I could
To blow it to hell and gone
    Burrow down in and
    Blow Up The Outside World

Someone tried to tell me something
Don't let the world get you down
Nothing will do me in before I do myself
So save it for your own and the ones you can help

    Want to make it understood
    Wanting though I never would
Trying though I know it's wrong
Blowing it to hell and gone
    Wishing though I never could

    Blow Up The Outside World
  • Don't we all want to blow up the outside world (metaphorically) from time to time? Written entirely by lead singer Chris Cornell, this song finds him wishing he could retreat from the people and pressures of everyday life. His songs can be very dark, but he ascribes to the theory that sad songs can make you feel better - kind of like horror movies.
  • This song was written differently than most of Soundgarden's previous work. Instead of building off riffs, which was usually their strategy, Chris Cornell built this song with vocal melodies as the foundation. "Chris went that direction of singer/songwriter guy," guitarist Kim Thayil told us . "And the band was more accepting because of the success of singer/songwriting stuff as opposed to more guitar oriented rock."
  • Jerry Casale directed the video. He was a founding member of Devo, a band that was making innovative videos years before MTV went on the air. He directed all Devo's videos, and has worked on videos for many other artists. In our interview with Casale , he talked about working on the clip: "I directed the epic video, the last video they made before they broke up. Everybody had their own dressing rooms and only came out for the takes and then disappeared back in their dressing rooms. They were very professional - when they would come on the set, they were ready to do what they were supposed to do, but it was all business. I only found out during the shoot what was really going on with them, I had no idea they were about to break up until we were in the middle of this 3 day shoot of this epic 5 minute and 20 second song that was a very depressing song. I guess it was Chris' final statement about how he was feeling. It certainly left you with a depressed energy after you heard it."
  • In an interview with Chris Cornell back when the video was released, the interviewer asked him, "If you could blow something up on the outside world, what would it be?" Chris replied with: stupid people, mini malls, racists, and hardcore religious rights people. (thanks, Elies - Surrey, Canada)
  • Until their 2010 reunion, this was the last single Soundgarden released in the US or Europe. In April 1997, the band announced they were breaking up. Lead singer Chris Cornell released a solo album, then formed the band Audioslave with members of Rage Against The Machine.

    Jocko Homo
  • In our interview with Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale of Devo , Mothersbaugh told us: "'Jocko Homo' was one of the first songs I wrote for the band. The whole song was meant to be a theme song for the theory of de-evolution and for Devo, what we were about. It was meant to lay out the story right there. It was a collection of discussions we had where we sat around in Kent after students had been shot, and decided that what we were seeing happening on the planet, when we looked at the news and read the paper, was not evolution but was more appropriately described as de-evolution."
  • Jocko Homo means "Monkey Man." Mothersbaugh was a student at Kent State University when a friend gave him a pamphlet called "Jocko Homo, Heaven Bound King of the Apes." It was a religious pamphlet debunking evolution, explaining how absurd the idea was that a man would descend from a monkey. The pamphlet was printed in the '30s by a religious zealot from Rogers, Ohio. One of the pictures showed a devil pointing up a staircase that said "2 million years along the stairway to heaven." The devil had 'De-Evolution' written on his chest and was laughing and pointing up the stairs. The stairs had names like slavery, world war, drunkenness, adultery - it kept going with horrible attributes of man.
  • When we spoke with Devo co-founder Jerry Casale, he said: "That was kind of our position statement. It was our mission statement saying, 'Hey look, humans are making up stories about why we're here and how we got here and who we are and what our importance is and it's all basically rubbish, it's absurd. You don't know what's going on, and that's OK. In fact, if you admit you don't know what's going on and you admit there are alternative explanations for things, then you're already better off, and there's a lot of things you won't do because you'd quit believing in ridiculous things that drive you to actions that cause more pain and suffering in the world.' It was kind of a Dada, self-effacing kind of statement, like, 'Look, we're all pinheads here on this planet together.'"
  • Mothersbaugh told us: "The chorus that keeps repeating the 'Are we not men' is directly from the very first Island Of Lost Souls (1932). There were two remakes that were both tepid and not nearly as compelling as the original. The original had a mad scientist on a deserted Pacific Island where he operated on animals - beasts from the jungle, in a room called the House Of Pain. He operates on these beasts to try to raise them up on the evolutionary chart. It's a very painful operation and when he does this, you can hear them screaming in the middle of the night in the House Of Pain.

His biggest success was a female named Lota who used to be a panther, but these animals keep devolving backwards. Lota gets cat claws, and she knows she's devolving. He has to do a painful operation to bring her back again, but in the meantime you see all these characters that are like sub-human, half-animal, half-man creatures that stumble around the jungle. Some of them could hold menial jobs at the House Of Pain. At one point, they were walking in a line around a fire in the woods at night while the doctor's working in the House Of Pain, and they were casting shadows on the side of the House Of Pain, and I saw these shadows of these sub-human creatures just slouching past the wall, and I was like, 'Holy crap, I know all those people, they live here in Akron with me.' That's where the inspiration came from.

The mad scientist would crack a whip standing on a rock and all the animals would come to attention, and he'd go, 'What is the law?' Usually it meant one of them had broken the law, like bad dogs that aren't house trained yet. They would all go in kind of a humble fashion, 'Not to spill blood.' Then he would go 'Are we not men?' and he'd crack the whip again and then he goes, 'What is the law?' and they'd have another law they'd have to repeat like 'Not to eat flesh' or 'Not to walk on all fours.' Then he'd crack the whip again and go 'Are we not men?' So that's where the line came from. There were like, watered down, wussy versions of it in the later Islands Of Dr. Moreau stuff, but that was a really intense movie. If you were sitting in a living room in Akron, Ohio in 1972 with some quack religious pamphlet sitting on your lap, the next thing was easy."
  • Casale said in our interview: "We moved the debate sideways - you believe what you want, but we like this guy that said we're all descendants of cannibalistic apes that ate the brains of other apes and went crazy and lost their tails. That explained what we were looking at in the world better than Darwinism or Creationism."
  • Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! was Devo's first album. It was produced by Brian Eno, who was in the band Roxy Music and also produced Talking Heads. He was an innovator of electronic, synthesizer-based music.
  • Jerry Casale: "We were kind of poetically explaining what it meant to be Devo, and what de-evolution was. We didn't see any evidence that man was the result of some never ending linear progress and everything was getting better. When we were growing up, the magazines would show the world in 1999, and it'd be this beautiful, futuristic, domed city with everybody going around in jets and space-cars. Everybody was fed and everybody was groomed and everybody seemed to have tons of money. It's such a joke, what really happened was: the planet got more and more overrun by population, greater gaps between the rich and the poor, more new diseases, decimation of the environment. It seemed like even though people were getting more 'free' information from television and newspapers, they were actually less informed, less thoughtful, and acting dumber. So we saw de-evolution. The fact that a bad actor could be elected president was more proof to us. Things have just gone downhill from there. We didn't really want it to all be true, instead it looks like de-evolution was clearly real. In retrospect, compared to what's going on today, Reagan looks like a serious guy."
  • With the exception of "Whip It," Devo didn't have any big hits, but their music was very influential and continues to be in demand for movies and commercials. Mothersbaugh runs a production company called Mutato Muzika, and has worked on the music for many movies, including Happy Gilmore, Rugrats, and Rushmore. Casale directed all of Devo's videos, and continues to work on music videos and commercials. He has directed music videos by The Cars, The Foo Fighters, Soundgarden and Rush.

Final Episode (Let's Change the Channel)
  • The first single from Asking Alexandria's debut album, the LP title was chosen from a lyric within the chorus, which reads "Just stand up and scream, the tainted clock is counting down."
  • Danny Worsnop told Kerrang! magazine the story of this song: "'Final Episode' was me and Ben (Bruce, guitar) when we started writing together and we were jamming. We had the lyrics, but I was actually the guitarist at this point. So we had these lyrics and I went into the vocal booth to just do a rough take of them, so we could send it to singers, to try out for the band."

"I went in, and when I walked out, they instantly fired me on guitar and told me I was a singer," he continued." "I think it took literally about 30 or 40 minutes. It was pretty much just jammed out there and then, and it hasn't changed since that very incarnation of it."
  • Worsnop explained the song's meaning to Kerrang!: "For me, this song is just about bulls--t people. People who are not good to deal with and who you just want to get the hell away from. Which somehow we still haven't managed to do!"

    Lady In Red Lyrics

    Lady In Red
  • De Burgh started writing this song about his wife Diane, after an argument, but he was having a hard time finishing it. Part of the problem was that he needed a title: he didn't want to use "The Way You Look Tonight," because there there was already a song with that name. As de Burgh tells it, five months later he saw Diane, wearing red, across a crowded nightclub, which gave him the idea for the title. On the British TV series This Is Your Life, de Burgh said that the song was inspired by the memory of when he first saw Diane, and how men so often cannot even remember what their wives were wearing when they first met. On his website, he said the song was not specifically about Diane, but about appreciating the most important people in our lives, who we often take for granted; how we often fail to notice what attracted us to another person in the first place. In this account, he was already married to Diane but didn't realize it was her when he spotted her across the room.
  • Some interesting stuff about Chris de Burgh: he was born in Buenos Aires but moved with his family to Ireland when his diplomat father retired. He and Diane had two sons and a daughter named Rosanna Davison (Chris uses his mother's maiden name for showbiz - his real name is Chris Davison) who was chosen Miss Ireland, 2003 and went on to win the Miss World pageant. De Burgh has talked about his "healing hands," and how he can sometime cure maladies by laying his hands on people as a form of alternative therapy.
  • "Lady In Red" was a huge worldwide hit, going to #1 in 25 different countries. In the UK, it became a huge part of the cultural landscape, with listeners divided over whether it was the sweetest love song ever written or a pile of treacly musical mush. De Burgh was never able to duplicate the success of this song, but he developed a loyal following in Europe, where there was modest but lasting demand for his music. In America, his only other trip to the Top-40 was with his 1982 song "Don't Pay The Ferryman."
  • Some of the movies this song appeared in are American Psycho, Dodgeball, Baby Mama and Working Girl.
  • The real life love story of this song took a hit in the mid-'90s when de Burgh revealed that he had an affair with the 19 year old nanny he employed while his wife was recovering from a horseback riding accident. After some public contrition, with de Burgh saying "I don't want to gamble with my marriage and my family," he and Diane remained together.
