Lonesome Valley 2003

Carter penned this song about the pain she felt after losing her mother June and her mother's husband Johnny Cash in the same year: 2003. Carlene explains in the song that after June passed away, Johnny lost his will to live:

In our interview with Carlene Carter , she explained: "'Lonesome Valley' represents to me the loss of everyone in my life. It was centered around Mom and John and I almost didn't make the last verse have John passing in it but it was part of the story of where I was going."

One Of My Turns

This was inspired by Roy Harper, a friend of the band and lead singer on Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar." The specific inspiration was an incident where Harper trashed his caravan at the 1975 Knebworth festival. (thanks, Jim - Birmingham, England)

The Wall's producer Bob Ezrin thought of the album as a theatrical experience, and he cites this song as an example of that vision. He told Rolling Stone: "My vision for it was informed by the LP of the 1966 film A Man For All Seasons - all the dialogue, music and sound effects. Where It's At

The throwaway phrase "yep yep" is dropped seven times into this song. The hook was a late addition when Cary Barlowe ("American Honey") visited East Nashville on June 25, 2013, for a writing appointment with Zach Crowell ("See You Tonight") and Matt Jenkins ("Cop Car").

When Barlowe arrived the other two had already started a song arising from a comment that Crowell has made. "I can't remember what I was talking about — maybe a pizza place, and I said, 'Ooh, that pizza place, that's where it's at, right there,'" Crowell recounted to Billboard magazine. "I recall Matt going, 'That's the title — 'Where It's At.' Probably two seconds later Cary walked in the door."

The trio proceeded to write lyrics about how the right woman is such an important part of a well-lived life. "We tried to make it light and fun," said Jenkins. "It's not rocket science, certainly. It's just feel-good, and you want to crank it up and jam it."

Within less than three hours, they were close to finishing the song, but had a phrase in the chorus — "Dressed up, hair down, in a ball cap. As long as I get that" — that had a gap in the middle that needed to be filled, so Crowell suggested the "yep, yep" part. "I probably thought it was bad," he said. "I probably pitched it in a very unconfident kind of way, but they thought it was good."

Lynch told Radio.com the song is the perfect tune to celebrate warm weather fun. "The first time I heard it, it's infectious," he said. "The guitar licks are like ear worms, they stay in your head forever. I just thought, 'What a perfect summertime song.'"

"It's about the simple things in life. It's about the easy," he continued. "It's not glam. It's a girl that's chillin' out in her pajamas. There's nothing better than that, than being with somebody in the comfort of your own home."

Lynch titled his second album after this song. "It's where I am, as a person and an artist," he told Rolling Stone Country. "All the songs on the record are moments I've captured and put down. They were inspired by my excitement for life. So [the album title] 'Where It's At' sounds pretty perfect."

The song was written early in the process of making the Where It's At album. Dustin Lynch admitted to Rolling Stone Country that originally, it wasn't in the running to be the leadoff track. "In the making of an album when we're writing songs and listening for months and months, sometimes the stuff that comes in first you get tired of. We didn't think it was a single," he explained. "Something magical happened with the guitars when we recorded it. Here's a song that took me a while to even consider it in the game, and now I'm the one championing it to be the first single. It was like the Cinderella story of the album."

This romantic House track features the voice of Laura Welsh. The Staffordshire native debuted in 2010 as Laura and the Tears, then as Hey Laura, finally releasing her recordings as Laura Welsh.

Before teaming up with Gorgon City, Welsh had already released several solo singles, collaborating with high-profile songwriters and producers like Dev Hynes ("Unravel") and Emile Haynie ("Undiscovered"). She had also supported Ellie Goudling and London Grammar on live dates.

Welsh recorded her contribution in December 2013. "I went over to their studio just to write with them," she recalled to Digital Spy . "We just did one song together. We vocalled the song on that day as we were writing it. I really didn't think any more of it, and then they came back and said they wanted it to be a single."

Gorgon City told Q magazine about this collaboration with Laura Welsh: "We had wanted to work with Laura for a while, she's got an amazing rich vocal quality with her own unique style and not necessarily someone you'd associate with a dance record. The Pass

Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart: "There was a lot I wanted to address in that song, and it's probably one of the hardest ones I've ever written. I spent a lot of time on it, refining it, and even more doing research. There was one song previously, called 'Manhattan Project' where I wanted to write about the birth of the nuclear age. Well, easier said than done, especially when [writing] lyrics, you've got a couple of hundred words to say what you want to say. So each word counts, and each word had better be accurate, and so I found in the case of the Manhattan Project, I was having to go back and read histories of the time, histories of the place, biographies of all the people involved, and that's not without its own rewards, but it's a lot of work to go to to write a song - having to read a dozen books and collate all your knowledge and experience just so you can write, you know, if it says the scientists were in the desert sands, well, make sure they were and why, and all that. So with this song it was the same. I felt concerned about it, but, at the same time, I didn't want the classic thing of 'Oh, life's not so bad, you know, it's worth living' and all that. I didn't want one of those pat, kind of clichéd, patronizing statements, so I really worked hard to find out true stories, and among the people that I write to are people who are going to universities, to MIT, and collecting stories from them about people they had known and what they felt, and why the people had taken this desperate step and all of that and trying really hard to understand something that, fundamentally, to me is totally un-understandable. I just can't relate to it at all, but I wanted to write about it. And the facet that I most wanted to write about was to demythologize it - the same as with 'Manhattan Project' - it demythologized the nuclear age, and it's the same thing with this facet - of taking the nobility out of it and saying that yes, it's sad, it's a horrible, tragic thing if someone takes their own life, but let's not pretend it's a hero's end. It's not a triumph. It's not a heroic epic. It's a tragedy, and it's a personal tragedy for them, but much more so for the people left behind, and I really started to get offended by the samurai kind of values that were attached to it, like here's a warrior that felt it was better to die with honor, and all of that kind of offended me. I can understand someone making the choice; it's their choice to make. I can't relate to it, and I could never imagine it, for myself, but still I thought it's a really important thing to try to get down."

Bass player and lead singer Geddy Lee: "There are certain songs, like 'The Pass,' where I felt it was more important to keep the lyrics intact and to build up a musical statement that's born out of the message of the song. In a case like that, I have to do a lot of thinking before a single note is written and I really immerse myself into the song. I mean, if I have to sing Neil's lyrics, I have to feel some sort of relationship with what he's talking about. I have to feel in concert with them in order to make it believable, to myself and to the listener. So there is a lot of conversation that goes down about each song before I start writing melodies." This song finds Welsh delving into a 'take it or leave it' approach. She explained to The Line Of Best Fit : "It's about me going through a certain situation and my personal experience. And I guess the key line in that track is 'I can't be something that I'm not.' It's like 'take me as I am or leave it.'"

"It's about looking underneath everything and how to figure that out, and my train of thought was on those lines," Welsh continued. "I'd say that was the key line of the song and everything else was built around that."

Welsh collaborated on the song with American producer Emile Haynie, who's also worked with Kanye and Lana Del Rey. She told Line of Best Fit: "He came to London for a week and did a few tracks over here. Then I just went to New York a couple of months ago and went to his studio. That was really cool. So we worked on a few tracks on the album, and I also worked with Dev Hynes before Christmas last year for like a day, and 'Unravel' came out of that, which released through Luv Luv Luv. And then when I went back to New York to work on my writing, and Dev and Emile were there, so I worked with them. We just got in a room together, and it was great to get everyone I worked from the start of the record in the beginning together."

This was included on on the 50 Shades Of Grey soundtrack. Welsh told HMV.com : "The song wasn't written for the film, but the producers liked it and wanted it for the film."

Aeroplane

This is based on a traditional Blues song called "Jesus Is My Aeroplane." On their Greatest Hits DVD, Red Hot Chili Peppers explain that is how they feel about music, that it takes them to a higher place. (thanks, Liz - Surrey, England)

Towards the end of the video there is a group of kids singing "You're my Aeroplane." Those kids are from the kindergarten class of Clara, daughter of bass player Flea. Clara is the one towards the left, singing the loudest. (thanks, James - Guilford, CT)

Some of the lyrics seem to be about hedonism and drug use, notably the refrain "I like pleasure spiked with pain." The line, "Sitting in my kitchen, I'm turning into dust again" is most likely a reference to lead singer Anthony Kiedis' relapse, as his kitchen was where he would often do drugs. Flea played some slap bass on the verses of this song using a Treker Louis Johnson Signature 4-string. In an interview with Bass Player magazine, he explained that the song gave him a little trouble. Said Flea: "'Aeroplane' was the only song I was worried about-I thought it sounded like another stupid white boy trying to be funky! I put it out anyway, but it's the one thing I'd go back and fix. When I played it live in the studio with the band, the bass didn't record right for some reason, so it was one of the few things I had to overdub. The part kept feeling stiff to me, as if it wasn't my day; I wasn't flowing with the drums. I wanted to redo it, but Rick (Rubin, producer) said, 'It's cool.'"

Wasteland

Lead vocalist Bear Rinehart admitted that Needtobreath were very close to calling it quits, but somewhere in making Rivers In the Wasteland, they rediscovered the passion for music and appreciation for each other. This song describes where the South Carolina rockers were at the beginning of the recording process. "'Wasteland' is about feeling like, 'Man, we're at the bottom, but there is some hope,'" Rinehart explained to Billboard magazine. "A lyric in the song says 'there's a crack in the door filled with light' that is really where we were when we started the record. It was bleak, but at the same time, something was happening."

"We are here for a reason and we ended up naming the record Rivers in the Wasteland because we really felt like that hope, something came out of nothing," he continued. "We started loving each other and enjoying the moment and immediately things started being more inspired. We started getting surprised by what was happening rather than dictating everything. That's really what the record is about."
