Happy Endings (Give Yourself A Pinch) Lyrics

Happy Endings (Give Yourself A Pinch)
  • Lionel Bart wrote this song for a commercial advertising the Abbey National Building Society as part of their "Abbey Endings" (a play on "Happy Endings") campaign. Bart appeared in the spot, playing piano and singing along with a group of children. The commercial was so popular that the song was released as a single, becoming Bart's last popular song released during his lifetime. Copyright EMI Records Ltd and running to a mere 2 minutes 35 seconds, it was unusually recorded by the composer himself, with his very young co-performers.

Bart was a revered British composer whose plays included La Strada and Oliver!. Known also for his eccentricities and lavish parties, he died of liver cancer in 1999 at age 68. In 2013, his unfinished musical Quasimodo was completed and performed in London 14 years after his death.

As for the Abbey National Building Society, it was taken over by Santander in 2010, renamed and forgotten. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England)

    Believe Lyrics

    Believe, when you lie
You will never need to recognize yourself
    To deceive
To remove all chance of doubt and be received
    With your lie
The deception is complete when you concede
    And decide
To reject your lives, sacrificed to me

    Penance can't absolve your sin
    All your belief
    Cannot absolve your sin

    Believe, when you lie
You will never need to recognize the source
    Of deceit
To renew your faith in God
You must believe, in your lie
The redemption is complete when you conceive
    And decline
    To release your lives
    Sacrificed to me

Penance can't absolve your sin All your belief
    Cannot absolve your sin

Reap your life, like you want to
    recognize, all you've come to

    Reap your life
    Veiled in shadow
    Recognize
    Faces of the crucified
I can hear their screams tonight
    Ever haunting me

    Burn your lie into me

    Penance can't absolve your sin
    All your belief
    Cannot absolve your sin

    Believe
  • Like a lot of Disturbed's songs, this is very religious. It's about how you need to have faith or "believe" in the lord in order to get to heaven:
"To renew your faith in God you must believe," "To remove all chance of doubt and be received"

If you don't and you try to cover it up, down you go:
"In your lie the redemption is complete when you conceive and decline to release your lives sacrificed to me." (thanks, Casey Faris - JC, OR)

    Testify Lyrics

I remember wakin' up, being broke
But still it wasn't breakin' us
I remember why I broke the rules,
Cuz I ain't really have nobody to look up to
I remember cuttin' class, bein' bad,
Cuz I ain't have what them other kids had
I remember wishin' that I knew my dad,
Then I remember wishin' I could get him back
For every single night that he told me he was comin' and he didn't,
For every single dollar that my mama 'nem was missin'
For every thing I wanted and was told I couldn't get it,
And that I had to face it that my daddy was addicted (damn)
That's right it wasn't easy growin' up,
Mama was exposin' us to life as she knew it
So we all went through it,
I remember bein' down and out, sleepin', on my homie's couch
In & outta trouble ever since my mama put me out

Damn it's getting real, damn it's getting real
Didn't graduate, I'm thinking damn I gotta deal
So I hit da block, selling rocks just to eat a meal
So I grabbed da Glock, kept it cocked
    Peace is being still

In da back of da tracks, my nigga's stayed wit da packs
And if a nigga was schemin', my brotha stayed with tha gat
Yea, yea we stayed in da trap, yea everyday in da trap
These ho's was chasin' da cheese, so we would stay wit da rat's
And we was ridin' down, dippin' low, I stayed in da back
In the X5 stuntin', we ain't know how to act
Spendin' money like it's nothin', cuz we gone get it back
17 never thought that I'd be gettin' dem racks,
Had a dream but I said I wasn't fuckin' wit that
Mel told me I would make it, I ain't fuckin' wit that
But he told me that it wouldn't hurt to give it a try
Hardest thing out in New Orleans never see 25

Right then I woke up, broke out, told my nigga's had to roll out,
Moved to the A and got motivated, that inspiration don't run out
Heard my brother got gunned down and it hurt me to my heart,
So I kept grindin', I kept pushin', he told me to go far
So I can't stop at no crib, can't stop at no car,
Gotta keep going like there ain't no tomorrow
So I'm goin' hard everyday, 'til I got nothin' to say, nothin' can stand in my way,
I gotta stay, to show my nigga's a different way

Imma tell da truth and da whole truth,
Cuz there ain't no need to lie
And I ain't tryna keep it all inside,
    So I gotta Testify
For you and I, I testify

Imma tell da truth and da whole truth,
Cuz there ain't no need to lie
And I ain't tryna keep it all inside,
    So I gotta testify
For you and I, I testify

Imma tell da truth and da whole truth,
Cuz there ain't no need to lie

    Ash and Ember Lyrics

Am I seeing double, am I withdrawn
Depositing lyrics into a love song
Spider weaving webs for a catch that won't come
Am I pulling roses from a dead bush
A soldier running late for the ambush
Ready in the depth for a stone that's long gone

    Is it too late?
    It's never ending but nevertheless
I'm the first one to second my guess
And the fire in my heart came from Ash and Ember

And every I step I take, got the devil to repay
I'll never make it out alive, but I won't surrender
Had to take it day by day, had to learn the hard way
Like a phoenix rising up from ash and ember
    Ash and ember

Am I reaching out for something that I can't grab
Something infinitely splitting into two halves
Is there something I forgot that I can't remember
Am I swimming in a river that was manmade
Demolishing a road that was just paved
It's like trying to catch a junebug in late December

    Is it too late?
    It's never ending but nevertheless
I'm the first one to second my guess
And the fire in my heart came from ash and ember

And every I step I take, got the devil to repay
I'll never make it out alive, but I won't surrender
Had to take it day by day, had to learn the hard way
Like a phoenix rising up from ash and ember
    Ash and ember
    Ash and ember

Have I climbed the ladder to the last rung
Am I simply gonna finish where I started from
Is the future just the past that I'll never outrun

And every I step I take, got the devil to repay
I'll never make it out alive, but I won't surrender
Had to take it day by day, had to feel the heartbreak
Like a phoenix I was born from ash and ember
    Ash and ember
    Ash and ember

Am I stealing something I could borrow
Is yesterday just waiting for tomorrow

    Lonesome Valley 2003 Lyrics

You gotta walk that lonesome valley,
You gotta walk it by yourself,
Nobody here can walk it for you,
You gotta walk it by yourself.

Some people say that John was a Baptist,
Some folks say he was a Jew,
But your holy scripture tells you
That he was a preacher too.

    Daniel was a Bible hero,
Was a prophet brave and true,
In a den of hungry lions
Proved what faith can do for you.

There's a road that leads to glory
    Through a valley far away,
Nobody else can walk it for you,
They can only point the way.

Mamma and daddy loves you dearly,
    Sister does and brother, too,
They may beg you to go with them,
But they cannot go for you.

I'm gonna walk that lonesome valley,
I'm gonna walk it by myself,
Don't want to nobody to walk it for me,
I'm gonna walk it by myself.

    Lonesome Valley 2003
  • Carter penned this song about the pain she felt after losing her mother June and her mother's husband Johnny Cash in the same year: 2003. Carlene explains in the song that after June passed away, Johnny lost his will to live:

Johnny just cried 'cause Junie had died
He didn't care to carry on

In our interview with Carlene Carter , she explained: "'Lonesome Valley' represents to me the loss of everyone in my life. It was centered around Mom and John and I almost didn't make the last verse have John passing in it but it was part of the story of where I was going."
  • This song is based on a hymn called "Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley," which is about how we must bear our own burdens:

We must walk this lonesome valley
We have to walk it by ourselves
O, nobody else can walk it for us
We have to walk it by ourselves
  • Carlene Carter lost a third member of her family when her sister Rosey died on October 24, 2003, three weeks after Johnny Cash passed away. She didn't write this into the song because it was too painful.

    The Ripper Lyrics

    You're in for surprise
    You're in for a shock
    In London town streets
    When there's darkness and fog
    When you least expect me
    And you turn your back
    I'll attack

    I smile when I'm sneaking
    Through shadows by the wall
    I laugh when I'm creeping
But you won't hear me at all

    All hear my warning
    Never turn your back
    On The Ripper

    You'll soon shake with fear
    Never knowing if I'm near
    I'm sly and I'm shameless
    Nocturnal and nameless
    Except for "The Ripper"
Or if you like "Jack The Knife"

    Any back alley street
    Is where we'll probably meet
    Underneath a gas lamp
Where the air's cold and damp
    I'm a nasty surprise
    I'm a devil in disguise
    I'm a footstep at night
I'm a scream of the fright

    All hear my warning
    Never turn your back
On the ripper, the ripper, the ripper

    One Of My Turns Lyrics

"Oh my God! What a fabulous room! Are all these your guitars?
"I'm sorry sir, I didn't mean to startle you!"
"This place is bigger than our apartment!"
"Let me know when you're entering a room"
    "Yes sir!"
"Um, Can I get a drink of water?"
    "I was wondering about..."
    "You want some, huh?"
    "Yes"
"Oh wow, look at this tub? Do you want to take bath?"
"I'll have to find out from Mrs. Bancroft what time she wants to meet us, for her main..."
    "What are watching?"
"If you'll just let me know as soon as you can ... Mrs Bancroft" "Mrs Bancroft..."
    "Hello?"
    "I don't understand..."
    "Are you feeling okay?..."

Day after day, love turns grey
Like the skin of a dying man.
And night after night, we pretend its all right
But I have grown older and
    You have grown colder and
Nothing is very much fun any more.
And I can feel One Of My Turns coming on.
I feel cold as a razor blade,
    Tight as a tourniquet,
    Dry as a funeral drum.

    Run to the bedroom,
In the suitcase on the left
    You'll find my favorite axe.
    Don't look so frightened
This is just a passing phase,
    One of my bad days.
Would you like to watch T.V.?
    Or get between the sheets?
    Or contemplate the silent freeway?
Would you like something to eat?
Would you like to learn to fly?
    Would'ya?
Would you like to see me try?

Would you like to call the cops?
Do you think it's time I stopped?
    Why are you running away?

I used to put it on and close my eyes - it was an eyelid movie."

    Where It's At Lyrics

It ain't in a high rise looking for a good time shutting down the city lights
It ain't in the water floating like a bobber soaking up that hot sunshine
As good as it gets, no that ain't where it is

It's at 2 am when she's reaching' over
Faded T-shirt hanging off her shoulder
Dressed up, hair down, in a ball cap
Yep yep, as long as I get that
Sweet little something late night kiss
On a plane or a train or way back in the sticks
    I swear, if she's there, that's where
Yep yep, that's Where It's At.

It ain't in a suped-up shiny red new truck, if she ain't to my right
It ain't in a dive bar, tall can of PBR, poppin' tops rockin' all night
As good as it gets, no that ain't where it is

It's at 2 am when she's reaching' over
Faded T-shirt hanging off her shoulder
Dressed up, hair down, in a ball cap

Yep yep, that's where it's at.

No, it don't matter wherever we're at (No)
No, it don't get no better than that

It ain't in a suped-up shiny red new truck, if she ain't to my right

    Where It's At
  • The throwaway phrase "yep yep" is dropped seven times into this song. The hook was a late addition when Cary Barlowe ("American Honey") visited East Nashville on June 25, 2013, for a writing appointment with Zach Crowell ("See You Tonight") and Matt Jenkins ("Cop Car").

When Barlowe arrived the other two had already started a song arising from a comment that Crowell has made. "I can't remember what I was talking about — maybe a pizza place, and I said, 'Ooh, that pizza place, that's where it's at, right there,'" Crowell recounted to Billboard magazine. "I recall Matt going, 'That's the title — 'Where It's At.' Probably two seconds later Cary walked in the door."

The trio proceeded to write lyrics about how the right woman is such an important part of a well-lived life. "We tried to make it light and fun," said Jenkins. "It's not rocket science, certainly. It's just feel-good, and you want to crank it up and jam it."

Within less than three hours, they were close to finishing the song, but had a phrase in the chorus — "Dressed up, hair down, in a ball cap. As long as I get that" — that had a gap in the middle that needed to be filled, so Crowell suggested the "yep, yep" part. "I probably thought it was bad," he said. "I probably pitched it in a very unconfident kind of way, but they thought it was good."
  • Lynch told Radio.com the song is the perfect tune to celebrate warm weather fun. "The first time I heard it, it's infectious," he said. "The guitar licks are like ear worms, they stay in your head forever. I just thought, 'What a perfect summertime song.'"

"It's about the simple things in life. It's about the easy," he continued. "It's not glam. It's a girl that's chillin' out in her pajamas. There's nothing better than that, than being with somebody in the comfort of your own home."
  • Lynch titled his second album after this song. "It's where I am, as a person and an artist," he told Rolling Stone Country. "All the songs on the record are moments I've captured and put down. They were inspired by my excitement for life. So [the album title] 'Where It's At' sounds pretty perfect."
  • The song was written early in the process of making the Where It's At album. Dustin Lynch admitted to Rolling Stone Country that originally, it wasn't in the running to be the leadoff track. "In the making of an album when we're writing songs and listening for months and months, sometimes the stuff that comes in first you get tired of. We didn't think it was a single," he explained. "Something magical happened with the guitars when we recorded it. Here's a song that took me a while to even consider it in the game, and now I'm the one championing it to be the first single. It was like the Cinderella story of the album."

It is a gift I know
A moment of bliss that we hold
A firecracker flash of light then on
To the next plane soul remain
    Come along if you dare
It's gonna be that you're scared
    Lovely life I thank you
For the reason to see the pain through

Light a candle for the dead
The wick is burning returning what we have
    It's who we are
We'll reach you if you're beyond the furthest star

Don't give up the fight to stay alive and even if
    you have to
Find the reason of another's pain if they lose you
If not for your self then those around who care
    like I do
One day you'll see the clear blue

    Beyond The Gray Sky
    Light a candle
    The wick
    It's who we are

One day you'll see the clear blue

    Here for You
  • This romantic House track features the voice of Laura Welsh. The Staffordshire native debuted in 2010 as Laura and the Tears, then as Hey Laura, finally releasing her recordings as Laura Welsh.

Before teaming up with Gorgon City, Welsh had already released several solo singles, collaborating with high-profile songwriters and producers like Dev Hynes ("Unravel") and Emile Haynie ("Undiscovered"). She had also supported Ellie Goudling and London Grammar on live dates.
  • Welsh recorded her contribution in December 2013. "I went over to their studio just to write with them," she recalled to Digital Spy . "We just did one song together. We vocalled the song on that day as we were writing it. I really didn't think any more of it, and then they came back and said they wanted it to be a single."
  • Gorgon City told Q magazine about this collaboration with Laura Welsh: "We had wanted to work with Laura for a while, she's got an amazing rich vocal quality with her own unique style and not necessarily someone you'd associate with a dance record. Although it sounds like a fairly chilled track, it's one of our biggest tunes to play in our DJ sets."

    The Pass Lyrics

Proud swagger out of the schoolyard
    Waiting for the world's applause
    Rebel without a conscience
    Martyr without a cause

    Static on your frequency
    Electrical storm in your veins
    Raging at unreachable glory
    Straining at invisible chains

And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge
Staring down into a heartless sea
    Can't face life on a razor's edge
Nothings what you thought it would be

All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars
Turn around and turn around and turn around
Turn around and walk the razor's edge
    Don't turn your back
And slam the door on me

It's not as if this barricade
    Blocks the only road
It's not as if you're all alone
    In wanting to explode

    Someone set a bad example
    Made surrender seem all right
The act of a noble warrior
Who lost the will to fight

And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge
Staring down into a heartless sea
Done with life on a razor's edge
Nothings what you thought it would be

    No hero in your tragedy
    No daring in your escape
    No salutes for your surrender
    Nothing noble in your fate
    Christ, what have you done?

    The Pass
  • Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart: "There was a lot I wanted to address in that song, and it's probably one of the hardest ones I've ever written. I spent a lot of time on it, refining it, and even more doing research. There was one song previously, called 'Manhattan Project' where I wanted to write about the birth of the nuclear age. Well, easier said than done, especially when [writing] lyrics, you've got a couple of hundred words to say what you want to say. So each word counts, and each word had better be accurate, and so I found in the case of the Manhattan Project, I was having to go back and read histories of the time, histories of the place, biographies of all the people involved, and that's not without its own rewards, but it's a lot of work to go to to write a song - having to read a dozen books and collate all your knowledge and experience just so you can write, you know, if it says the scientists were in the desert sands, well, make sure they were and why, and all that. So with this song it was the same. I felt concerned about it, but, at the same time, I didn't want the classic thing of 'Oh, life's not so bad, you know, it's worth living' and all that. I didn't want one of those pat, kind of clichéd, patronizing statements, so I really worked hard to find out true stories, and among the people that I write to are people who are going to universities, to MIT, and collecting stories from them about people they had known and what they felt, and why the people had taken this desperate step and all of that and trying really hard to understand something that, fundamentally, to me is totally un-understandable. I just can't relate to it at all, but I wanted to write about it. And the facet that I most wanted to write about was to demythologize it - the same as with 'Manhattan Project' - it demythologized the nuclear age, and it's the same thing with this facet - of taking the nobility out of it and saying that yes, it's sad, it's a horrible, tragic thing if someone takes their own life, but let's not pretend it's a hero's end. It's not a triumph. It's not a heroic epic. It's a tragedy, and it's a personal tragedy for them, but much more so for the people left behind, and I really started to get offended by the samurai kind of values that were attached to it, like here's a warrior that felt it was better to die with honor, and all of that kind of offended me. I can understand someone making the choice; it's their choice to make. I can't relate to it, and I could never imagine it, for myself, but still I thought it's a really important thing to try to get down."
  • Bass player and lead singer Geddy Lee: "There are certain songs, like 'The Pass,' where I felt it was more important to keep the lyrics intact and to build up a musical statement that's born out of the message of the song. In a case like that, I have to do a lot of thinking before a single note is written and I really immerse myself into the song. I mean, if I have to sing Neil's lyrics, I have to feel some sort of relationship with what he's talking about. I have to feel in concert with them in order to make it believable, to myself and to the listener. So there is a lot of conversation that goes down about each song before I start writing melodies." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for above 2)
