Monkey Chant Lyrics

Monkey Chant
  • This is a track from Mobile, Chicago-based percussionist Glenn Kotche's third solo album. He is best known for his involvement in Wilco.
  • Kotche told Uncut magazine the story of this song: "Monkey Chant was based on a portion of the Ramayana - the epic Hindu story and was inspired by some of the original, field recordings of the vocal chant from the last century."

"I assigned different sounds to the characters from the story. I had this prepared snare drum that I'd developed years ago and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to utilise it. It has various springs, cables and sticks going through the actual snare drum head with contact mikes on the drums so the small, really unusual sounds get amplified and interact with the rest of the kick."
  • Kotche told Uncut about the Mobile album. "Basically when I make a solo record I have certain rhythmic ideas that I want explored. It doesn't start out as, 'Oh, Ill make a solo record,' it starts out with nagging questions."

"I was touring so much with Wilco, writing in hotel rooms and on tour buses, looking at certain things that I'm not able to explore on a drum set alone. Its kind of an extension of my drumming and this particular record had three or four concepts that I was really interested in. Its kind of stylistically all over the place but there are rhythmic concepts grounded underneath the surface for me, all played on various percussion instruments." • The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit poem, which tells the story of Prince Rama, who was exiled from his kingdom of Ayodha. The epic was originally written by the poet (rishi) Valmiki of Ancient India and contains 24,000 verses in seven books. It is considered to be one of the two most important ancient epics of India, the other being the Mahabharata.

    Walk Among Stones Lyrics

    Walk Among Stones
  • This is perhaps one of Kate's most complicated songs, and she says herself it is really lots of random thoughts:
"Stars fell on Alabama" - Could be literal - could refer to the many Southern stars.
"Near the rocky shoals" - Refers to Muscle Shoals recording studio where she and many others have recorded.
"In a casket factory" - The studio was originally a casket factory.
"Where they found Soul" - Soul music is synonymous with Muscle Shoals.
"See that skinny boy there drinkin' him a coke, didn't we just see him on the Sullivan Show" - Elvis before he was famous - Ed Sullivan - Kate is a self proclaimed Elvis fan.
"We walk among the stones" - We walk among the memories and in the footsteps of those who have gone before us. Also we walk among the stones of life.
"Some say it was the cotton and workin' side by side" - Kate grew up during the time of Civil rights movement in the South and was heavily influenced by what she saw. The Cotton, and the slaves owned to pick it were both a cause of Civil war and civil rights; segregation.
"Now we're left to wonder what happened to the sound" - The end of the great rock and roll music, and Muscle Shoals sound.
"Was it 2 Kings dying" - Knowing Kate's background, it seems obvious that the two Kings are Martin Luther King, who fought for civil rights and was assassinated (there are many actual and possible references to Luther in her music) and the other is Elvis. "Who nailed the coffin down" - Who saw an end to the music as it was known, when Elvis died, and also an end to what King had been fighting for - would it have all been resolved had he not died?

    Cannons Lyrics

Look alive, break aside, draw a line in the sand
Here's the band: treat us like we're extras, we're not epic
Treat us like we're not on our boots
You leave us on the stretches where the credits roll

The king will simply build institutes
We are a part team military muscles
Tell ourselves we're the part of a soul
    Smashing regimes between (???) challenging
    Education, education and war

We're gonna need a lot more Cannons
If we gonna be out by Christmas
We're gonna need a lot more cannons
If we gonna be out by Christmas

I know, I know, if you wanna know,
If you wanna see your face again
I know we feel the same way

And making all the difficult decisions, to follow
    Petitions on children first
How about a person of position, you say
You will be happy if you expect the worst
Armor, paper strolls and a Bible,
So going out across apartment stores
You will be issued with a rifle on arrival, champs
    Education, education and war

We're gonna need a lot more cannons
If we gonna be out by Christmas
We're gonna need a lot more cannons
If we gonna be out by Christmas

I know, I know, if you wanna know,
If you wanna see your face again
I know we feel the same way

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Show us the way to go
    And let heaven help us
Show us the way to go
    Save our souls
Show us the way back home
    Save our souls
Show us the way to go

  • This climatic song finishes with a bitter two-minute apocalyptic poem, which is read by actor Bill Nighy. The verse references the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan over a soundtrack of battlefield noises and brouhaha from the Houses of Parliament. Speaking to The Independent, Kaisers frontman Ricky Wilson said: "When I was writing the lyrics for the record, the whole World War One centenary thing was flying around. So if you're writing honestly, it's going to leak in there."

"I wrote the poem as an exercise originally," he continued. "The original story was an imaginary assault by a superpower – not necessarily the USA, trying to take over Hell."

"They are invading Hell, wiping out Hell. Then going "now what do we do, where do we go next?"'
  • British actor Bill Nighy is best known in the music world for his song "Christmas is All Around" in the British romantic comedy movie Love Actually, which was a clear parody of Wet Wet Wet's "Love Is All Around."
  • The album title is referenced in this song. The first part is a reference to Tony Blair's election pledge that "education, education, education" was the cornerstone of Britain's future. The "& War" passes judgment on the rest of his legacy in the light of the military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It was Bill Nighy who came up with the album title. Ricky Wilson told Q magazine: "I was thinking of calling it Education & War, but Bill loved the full title. Everyone in Britain knows what it refers to."

    Rosa's Coronas Lyrics

    Como estas?
My name is Rosa and like my mother before me
Everyday I roll cigars and they're the finest in the world
To pass the time the reader reads about the violence in America
And I pray for my daughter and her baby girl

Late one night they took a boat ninety miles from Havana
To escape the only life I've ever known
She could have been just like me, a well-respected working woman
Who believes in her country and her home

And I wonder as I roll where will each one go
Will they land in the hands of kings and presidents
It's an art, it's a skill, and some would even kill
Just for one of Rosa's Coronas

It's everywhere in the news that John Paul is on his way
And for years I've longed to see the Holy Father's parade
We've been told not to go or production falls behind
But I know the quota won't be made that day

She had often wondered how to write a song about them, and suddenly she had a face for these people, especially for Rosa. Kate wanted it to be in first person so it was Rosa's story - or rather the story of such people told through Rosa. (thanks, Helen - South Shields, England)

    What Love Is This Lyrics

    What Love Is This
  • This song features powerful imagery of the Centurion soldier's reaction to discovering that Jesus was the Son of God after He'd been crucified. "I often think about what it would've been like to experience that and to say 'Truly, you are the Son of God,'" Kari shared. "You realize you were part of His death, you were the one of the people who'd nailed Him to a cross. He must have felt so incredibly broken—to believe the lie and then experience the truth."

"I really think that's like all of us," she added. "We've got to have the perspective that without the Lord's presence, we're all in darkness, and 'What Love Is This' is my love song to the Lord for His love song for my life."
  • Kari wrote the song with:

Lincoln Brewster, who is the senior worship pastor at Bayside Church in Granite Bay, California.

Mia Fieldes, who is the writer of Christian worship songs like "Saviour King" and "Beautiful" and is known for her involvement as a musician with Hillsong Church in Sydney.

Album: Johnny Cash At San Quentin

    A Boy Named Sue Lyrics

My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me Sue

Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk
It seems I had to fight my whole life through
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for A Boy Named Sue

Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean
My fist got hard and my wits got keen
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame
But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name

Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew
At an old saloon on a street of mud
There at a table, dealing stud
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me Sue

Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye
He was big and bent and gray and old
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said, "My name is Sue, how do you do
    Now you're gonna die"

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer

I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile

And he said, "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong"

He said, "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do
But ya ought to thank me, before I die
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
'Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you Sue"

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my paw, and he called me his son
And I came away with a different point of view
And I think about him, now and then
Every time I try and every time I win
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name himâ?¦

    A Boy Named Sue
  • This was written by the multitalented Shel Silverstein, who later wrote several hits for Dr. Hook, including "Sylvia's Mother" and "Cover Of The Rolling Stone." Silverstein also wrote several popular children's books. He got the idea for the song from his friend Jean Shepherd - a guy who had to deal with a girly name. Shepherd was a writer/humorist like Silverstein; he narrated the 1983 movie A Christmas Story, which is based on his writings.
  • This is about a boy who grows up angry at his father not only for leaving his family, but for naming him Sue. When the boy grows up, he sees his father in a bar and gets in a fight with him. After his father explains that he named him Sue to make sure he was tough, the son understands.
  • Cash recorded this live at San Quentin Prison in February 1969. Shel Silverstein's nephew Mitch Myers told us the story: "In those days in Nashville, and for all the people that would visit, the most fun that anyone really could have would be to go over to someone's house and play music. And they would do what one would call a 'Guitar Pull,' where you grabbed a guitar and you played one of your new songs, then someone else next to you would grab it and do the same, and there were people like Johnny Cash or Joni Mitchell, people of that caliber in the room.

Shel sang his song 'Boy Named Sue,' and Johnny's wife June Carter thought it was a great song for Johnny Cash to perform. And not too long after that they were headed off to San Quentin to record a record - Live At San Quentin - and June said, 'Why don't you bring that Shel song with you.' And so they brought the lyrics. And when he was on stage he performed that song for the first time ever, he performed it live in front of that captive audience, in every sense of the word.

He had to read the lyrics off of the sheet of paper that was at the foot of the stage, and it was a hit. And it wasn't touched up, it wasn't produced or simulated. They just did it, and it stuck. And it rang. I would say that it would qualify in the realm of novelty, a novelty song. Shel had a knack for the humorous and the kind of subversive lyrics. But they also were so catchy that people could not resist them." (Learn a lot more about Shel Silverstein in our interview with Mitch Myers.)
  • Shel Silverstein went on to write another song titled "The Father of the Boy Named Sue." It's the same story, but from the father's point of view. (thanks, Bashu - Nanoose Bay, Canada)
  • Johnny Cash performed this song in the East Room of the White House on April 17, 1970 when he and his wife were invited by President Richard Nixon. Nixon's staff had requested the song along with Okie From Muskogee and a song by Guy Drake called "Welfare Cadillac," but Cash refused to perform those songs, saying he didn't have arrangements ready.

And I don't really know just how to say it

Can we brave the tidal wave

I'm freaking out and sinking inside
I hope we find a ground that's high
Just know my love will never subside

And I don't really know just how to say it
We speak all day and never talk

Can you feel it, see it, hear it today
If you can't, then it doesn't matter anyway
You will never understand it 'cause it happens too fast
And it feels so good, it's like walking on glass
It's so cool, it's so hip, it's alright
It's so groovy, it's outta sight
You can touch it, smell it, taste it so sweet
But it makes no difference 'cause it knocks you off your feet

You want it all but you can't have it

It's cryin, bleedin, lying on the floor
So you lay down on it and you do it some more
You've got to share it, so you dare it
Then you bare it and you tear it

You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it

    It's alive, afraid, a lie, a sin
    It's magic, it's tragic, it's a loss, it's a win
    It's dark, it's moist, it's a bitter pain
It's sad it happened and it's a shame

You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it
    What is it?
    Is it
    What is it?
    Is it

  • Mike Patton joined Faith No More in 1989 and wrote the song's enigmatic lyrics, which constantly allude to "it," without ever explaining what "it" is.

The bridge simply consists of the band shouting, "It's it," while Patton responds with, "What is it?" (The word "epic" is never mentioned in the lyrics.

Patton gave some insight on the song's meaning when he told Circus magazine in 1990: "It was about sexual frustration. Sex and lack of sex."

Later in the interview, the topic of masturbation comes up, and Patton says: "Most people don't like to talk about it. I'm here to tell ya, I love it. That's kinda of what Epic's really about."
  • The music for "Epic" was written before frontman, Mike Patton, had joined the band. In our interview with bassist, Billy Gould, he explained: "It was conceived naturally as a riff in the studio between Roddy (Bottum, keyboardist), myself and Mike Bordin (drummer) during rehearsal that later got fleshed out into an entire song."
  • This was Faith No More's breakthrough hit single. Billy Gould told us that the record label, Slash, was ready to give up on the band, and, ironically, released "Epic" as a last resort: "At the time it was our favorite song on the album, but no one from the record label seemed too interested in it. In fact, we had done a video for 'From Out Of Nowhere' which didn't get much traction, and the label told us, 'Hey guys, the album didn't work. We'll do one more video for whatever song you want.' So we picked 'Epic' because it just felt the most natural at the time. We had very little expectations of it becoming a commercial hit."
  • Billy Gould explained in 1997: "A lot of our songs start music first, lyrics later, and it was called 'Epic' as a kind of code word before the words came along. Patton wrote the words to it about a week after he joined the band. I remember him explaining it to me and I didn't know him very well, so I wasn't sure what to make of it."
  • This song blends funk, rap, heavy metal and classical music. It is credited for laying the groundwork for the development of the nu metal genre.
  • The video was inspired by the Spanish artist, Salvador Dali. It ran constantly on MTV, and featured an exploding piano and a controversial image of a dying fish. The fish belonged to the Icelandic singer-songwriter, Björk, who was given it at a poetry recital in San Francisco. She later passed the fish on to Faith No More at a party at Bottum's house in Berkeley. Björk would never see the fish again... (thanks, Ryan - Raleigh, NC)
  • Faith No More guitarist, Jim Martin, was a close friend of Metallica bassist, Cliff Burton, who died when his band's tour bus overturned in Sweden in 1986. In the "Epic" video, Martin wears a t-shirt with the bassist's face on alongside the words "A Tribute to Cliff Burton."
  • This song has been covered by the Welsh rock band, The Automatic, the Swedish indie pop band, Love Is All and the Californian metal band, Atreyu, who included it on the bonus edition of their 2007 album, Lead Sails Paper Anchor. (thanks, Charlie - Las Vegas, NV)

    Hymn To Ninkasi Lyrics

    Hymn To Ninkasi
  • Alternatively "Hymn To Nin-kasi", this is one of the oldest extant songs in the world. It can be dated to around the 18th Century BC, and can be viewed as either a prayer and/or a drinking song and/or a beer brewing recipe! Ninkasi was the Sumerian goddess of beer.

The words were inscribed on a clay tablet that was found in what is now Iraq. Although the music has been lost - assuming there was music, as most likely there was, along with the name of the composer(s) - something far more important was recovered. The words were translated in 1964 by Miguel Civil at the University of Chicago.
  • In August 1991 it was reported that Solomon Katz of the University of Pennsylvania had teamed up with Fritz Maytag of the Anchor Brewing Company to brew the actual beer as described in the hymn/song/poem/recipe. It is said to have a dry flavor similar to apple cider but retaining the flavor of dates. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England, for above 2)

  • The husband-and-wife songwriting team of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant wrote this. Together, this talented couple penned many huge hits for the Everly Brothers and other artists, including "Wake Up Little Susie" and "All I Have To Do Is Dream." The Bryants are credited with being the first songwriters to come to Nashville and make a living only by writing songs. See a photo and learn more about them in Song Images .
  • This was a favorite of Simon & Garfunkel, who included it on their classic Bridge Over Troubled Water album. Paul Simon tells the story about how when he and Art Garfunkel were kids, they took a bus to the nearest record store so they could buy the single, and it became a staple of their shows when they started performing. It was always a fun song for them to play, especially when the audience would supply the backbeat. For their Bridge Over Troubled Water recording, they recorded audiences clapping from some of their shows to incorporate into the mix.
  • According to legend, the Everlys were nonplussed about the song but were appreciative of the $64 fee that both brothers received for the session.
  • In 1995, a movie called Bye Bye Love hit theaters. The film stars Paul Reiser, Matthew Modine and Randy Quaid as divorced men navigating a web of relationships. The song "Bye Bye Love" and a few other Everly Brothers tunes are featured in the film.

No, this 1914 ditty is not a precursor to death metal. The poor Pauline alluded to was not so poor. At one time the actress who played her, Pearl White, was being paid $3,000 a week, an astronomical sum at a time when a brand new state of the art automobile cost less than $600.

The silent film The Perils Of Pauline (see a still) was released in the US on March 23, 1914; this song, in 2/4 time has lyrics by Charles R. McCarron and music by Raymond Walker. The sheet music was copyright 1914 by Broadway Music Corporation.

The Perils Of Pauline was a classic damsel in distress serial with the heroine facing a seemingly endless series of perils in cliffhanger endings. Pearl White performed many of her own stunts in her relatively short but spectacular career, and this is believed to have led to her death at aged just 49. She suffered chronic pain from the inevitable injuries, and this led first to alcoholism and then to drug addiction. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England)

    Kiss The Rain Lyrics

Who ever submitted those lyrics must have been deaf lol..Here are the lyrics from another site which are correct, there's so many mistakes it'd be best to just redo the whole thing....Thanks..

    Hello
    Can you hear me
Am I getting through to you

    Hello
    Is it late there
Is there laughter on the line
Are you sure you're there alone
    'Cause I'm
    Trying to explain
    Something's wrong
You just don't sound the same

    Why don't you
    Why don't you
    Go outside
    Go outside

    Kiss The Rain
    Whenever you need me
    Kiss the rain
    Whenever I'm gone too long
If your lips feel lonely and thirsty
    Kiss the rain
    And wait for the dawn
    Keep in mind
    We're under the same sky
    And the night's
As empty for me as for you
    If you feel
    You can't wait till morning
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain

    Hello
    Do you miss me
I hear you say you do
But not the way I'm missing you

    What's new
    How's the weather
Is it stormy where you are
You sound so close but it feels like you're so far
    Oh would it mean anything
    If you knew
    What I'm left imagining
    In my mind
    In my mind
    Would you go
    Would you go

    Kiss the rain

    As you fall
    Over me
    Think of me
    Think of me
    Think of me
    Only me
    Kiss the rain
    Whenever you need me
    Kiss the rain
    Whenever I'm gone too long
    If your lips
    Feel hungry and tempted
    Kiss the rain
    And wait for the dawn
    Keep in mind
    We're under the same sky
    And the night's
As empty for me as for you
If you feel you can't wait till morning
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain

    (Kiss the rain)
    (Kiss the rain)
    (Kiss the rain)

    Hello
    Can you hear me
    Can you hear me
    Can you hear me

    Kiss The Rain
  • Desmond Child, who produced the album, got the idea for the title after hearing the Bush song "Glycerine" on the radio. Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale has a thick accent, and Desmond thought he was singing "Kiss The Rain." When he found out he wasn't, he decided to use "Kiss The Rain" for a song he was working on with Myers.
  • Child and Myers wrote this with Eric Bazilian, another successful songwriter/producer. Says Bazilian, "I think it's sort of based on all of our experiences. That's the thing, you sort of get to a common ground area where you draw on shared experiences, common experiences."
  • Bazilian: "I was at a songwriting camp at a castle in France - Miles Copeland used to do these things. That's where I met Desmond Child. I'd spoken to him a few times before, but we'd never actually met. He would tell me about this artist he was working with, sort of developing and writing with named Billie Myers. He was trying to convince me to stop in London on my way back to the United States with him to meet her and write a song. He told me he wanted to write a song called "Kiss The Rain," and we started writing it. At that point, I just had to go with him to London, so we got a small conference room at the Halcyon hotel in London. I had my Roland VS-880 workstation with me, which was a brand new thing at the time. I had just gotten it and was figuring out how to use it, and we recorded a demo on that, most of which is the record. The guitars were played that day, the keyboards, most of her vocals are all on that record."
  • Desmond Child has also worked with Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and Joan Jett. Eric Bazilian is a founding member of The Hooters and worked on the debut albums for both Cyndi Lauper and Joan Osborne. They both worked with Ricky Martin on his song "Private Emotion." (Thanks to Eric for speaking with us about this song. For more, check out his website at www.ericbazilian.com)
  • This song helped earn Myers a spot on the Lilith Fair the next year, which was a tour featuring female singer/songwriters like Sarah McLachlan and Tracy Chapman. Myers' unusual sound earned her a lot of fans, but so far this is her only hit.
