All Things Must Pass Lyrics

All Things Must Pass
  • This was one of the songs Harrison had saved up from his days with The Beatles. He wrote a lot of songs, but so did John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and most Beatles albums contained only one or two of Harrison's compositions; although his songs like "Something" and "Here Comes The Sun" are considered classics by many Beatles fans. When the band broke up, Harrison released a triple album that contained many songs he wrote when he was a Beatle.
  • The song is about moving on in life. Harrison was dealing with the breakup of The Beatles.
  • Harrison had Phil Spector produce the album and brought in some outstanding musicians to play on it, including Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon. Those 4 formed Derek and the Dominos during the sessions. When they were done with All Things Must Pass, they went to England and started touring and working on their own album, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, which was released around the same time as All Things Must Pass.
  • In 2003, Bobby Whitlock released an acoustic version on his album Other Assorted Love Songs. The album was recorded at a live show he played with his wife, Kim Carmel, and released on their own Domino Label. For more on the All Things Must Pass and the story of Derek and the Dominos, check out our Bobby Whitlock interview.
  • Harrison first recorded this as a demo at Abbey Road on February 25, 1969, his 26th birthday. Other demos recorded that day were "Old Brown Shoe" and "Something." (thanks, Adrian - Gettysburg, PA)

    Ingemar Johansson
  • This could be classed as either a tribute song or a novelty song; its slightly strained lyrics are due to the fact that like Saxon's "Red Alert" it is more of a news report set to music than a song.

Ingemar Johansson was the first and probably the last ever native-born Swede to win the heavyweight championship of the world. He won the silver medal in the heavyweight class at the 1952 Olympics at Helsinki, then turned pro with a fourth round knockout of Robert Masson. By 1959 he had amassed a record of 21 wins from 21 fights which earned him a shot at the world championship. In spite of this fine record he was the 5-1 underdog against defending champion Floyd Patterson, as the song points out. His stunning 3rd round knock out of Patterson took place at Yankee Stadium on June 20, 1959, and "Ingemar Johansson" was released the following month. Which is just as well for posterity - his, not Patterson's - because the American won both the 1960 rematch and the 1961 decider the following year. Johansson fought another four times, winning all four fights, but in 1962 Patterson lost his title by a brutal first round knockout to Sonny Liston, and the rematch in the same fashion the following year ending his professional career in 1972 with a 7 round knockout loss to the immortal Muhammad Ali to finish with a total of 55 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw from 64 fights.
  • "Ingemar Johansson" runs to 2 minutes 38 seconds and was written by Bert Caroll and Russell Moody. This team - Carroll is actually spelt thus - also wrote the B-side, "Haunted Heart," and "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" for Elvis Presley.
  • The song was rereleased on a compilation by Beach Road Recording, January 31, 2011 wherein it runs to 2 minutes 39 seconds. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England, for all above)

    Thorn Tree in the Garden
  • Eric Clapton was already a legendary guitarist when this was released, but in this group, he was simply another member and did his best to remain anonymous. The other members were outstanding session musicians. The band formed after working on George Harrison's album All Things Must Pass.
  • This was written by Bobby Whitlock, who also sang lead. He wrote many songs on the album and although he is know for his keyboard work, he played a variety of instruments with the group. He recorded with Delaney And Bonnie before forming Derek and the Dominos with Clapton, Jim Gordon and Carl Radle. Duane Allman also came to the sessions and played on some of the songs, including this one.
  • Whitlock: "I was living at The Plantation in the valley - you remember the shootout at The Plantation in the Leon Russell song. I was living there with Indian Head Davis and Chuck Blackwell and Jimmy Constantine - there were about 13 of us in this house in Sherman Oaks in the valley. I had a little dog and a little cat. One guy told me to get rid of my dog and cat because there wasn't room. I took my cat out to Delaney's house in Hawthorn, and when I got back my little dog was gone. This one guy in the house had taken my dog and done away with it. That was my only friend - this was the first time I had been anywhere outside of Macon, Georgia or the Memphis area. All of this was new to me, and I have an animal thing. I wanted to punch him out, and I thought, 'No, you can't do that,' so I went to my bedroom and sat down. I was thinking about a snake in the grass and some other ideas and I thought, 'He's the thorn tree in my garden.' I had this beautiful garden built in my consciousness where I was safe and secure with my little dog and my cat, and there's this thorn tree - that would be the guy who had my little dog put away. I wrote the song and it just came out of me. I hadn't even put it on paper, and I went out of my bedroom and knocked on his door. I said, 'Come here, I want to play you something.' We sat down at the table in the kitchen and I played him that song. He said, 'Wow, Bobby, that's beautiful.' I said, 'You're the thorn tree. There's going to come a day when I have the opportunity to record this song, and the whole world will know about it. You'll know what you did to me for the rest of your life.' I didn't realize it was going to go on the end of one of the biggest-selling records of all time. That was the furthest thing from my mind."
  • Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs is a double album. It was already mixed when they went back to tag the piano part on the end of the song "Layla." As they were listening back, the producer, Tom Dowd, realized they had room for one more song. Clapton suggested this, so they recorded it and used it as the last song on the album.
  • Whitlock: "Eric and Duane and Jim and Carl and myself all got around one microphone. Tom Down came out and placed us just so; everybody was a certain distance in and out, and we did it just like that. I was sitting on a bar stool - Eric was to my left, Duane was directly across from me, Carl was to my right and Jim was between Duane and Eric with a little bell. Carl was playing a pedal bass, Duane was on Dobro and Eric was playing acoustic guitar with a pick next to me. I was picking with my fingers.
  • Before he died of Leukemia, Tom Dowd did an interview in Producer magazine where he called this "The Perfect Stereo Recording."
  • The theme of the album is unrequited love. Says Whitlock, "It's all about love anyway. There is no love of this and not that. There's no measure of it. Whether it's a dog, your mother, dad, brother, sister, your companion, your horse or your neighbor, it is that one thing. It doesn't have a distinction. There's no barrier, it's just one thing that encompasses everything if you stop and think about it."
  • In 2002, Whitlock and his wife Kim played acoustic versions of this and other songs from the album at shows in the Northeast United States. They got a great response and realized there was a demand for these songs, since they hadn't been played in about 30 years. They formed The Domino Label and released a live album from one of these shows called Other Assorted Love Songs. (For more on Derek and the Dominos, check out our Bobby Whitlock interview.)

  • Singer Billy McCarthy wrote the song's lyrics on the northern Californian coast during an epic road trip up the coastline by motorbike. He said the song is "about ghosts and hope, and driving from someplace that has been holding you back for far too long."

"Sometimes we need to lighten the load we carry inside, remove layers and sit with just ourselves, no matter how hard we hate it," McCarthy continued. "And sometimes a ship must cast cargo in the sea to survive storms or the ship, no matter how brave, will perish."

Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel
    Come get up my baby
Look at that sky, life's begun
Nights are warm and the days are young
    Come get up my baby

There's my baby, lost that's all
Once I'm begging you save her little soul
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
    Come get up my baby

Last night they loved you, opening doors and pulling some strings, angel
    Come get up my baby
In walked luck and you looked in time
Never look back, walk tall, act fine
    Come get up my baby

I'll stick with you baby for a thousand years
Nothing's gonna touch you in these golden years, gold
Golden years, gold whop whop whop
    Come get up my baby

Some of these days, and it won't be long
Gonna drive back down where you once belonged
In the back of a dream car twenty foot long
Don't cry my sweet, don't break my heart
Doing all right, but you gotta get smart
Wish upon, wish upon, day upon day, I believe oh Lord
    I believe all the way
    Come get up my baby

Run for the shadows, run for the shadows
Run for the shadows in these golden years

There's my baby, lost that's all
Once I'm begging you save her little soul

    Golden Years
  • Bowie's ex-wife Angela claims this was written for her. Bowie does appear to be addressing someone specific in this song, encouraging them to revel in their "golden years": "Don't let me hear you say life's taking you nowhere, angel, come get up my baby, look at that sky, life's begun, nights are warm and the days are young."
  • Bowie wrote this with the intention of giving it to Elvis Presley, but he reportedly refused the song. Elvis died two years later.
  • Bowie performed this when he appeared on the TV show, Soul Train, in 1975. He was one of the first white singers to appear on the show. Bowie reportedly got drunk beforehand to try and calm his nerves and the footage does appear to show him stumbling over his lyrics.
  • Producer, Harry Maslin, said he achieved the "round" quality of the backing voices by using an old RCA microphone.
  • Station to Station saw Bowie adopt The Thin White Duke persona. Dressed in a white shirt, black trousers and waistcoat, The Thin White Duke was described by Bowie as "a nasty character indeed." Throughout this period, Bowie was consuming a large amount of cocaine, which added to the alienated feel of the character.

  • This was written by Matt Barus, the frontman of the Christchurch band The Dukes, who supported Blondie on a 2010 New Zealand tour. Blondie guitarist Chris Stein had asked Barus if he penned songs for other artists. Barus responded that he didn't, but he'd have a go. The New Zealander described the writing process to Stuff.co.nz as: "On the last night of the tour at The Mudhouse Winery in Waipara, we were in the middle of our set and I turned towards the sound desk and Chris and Debbie were there offstage watching our show. When we came off stage Chris came up to me and said 'we really like your songs, do you write for other people. I said, 'I haven't really'. And he asked me if I'd be keen to write some music for their next album. I just assumed it was a really nice thing to say at the end of a tour because people really don't know what else to say."

"It took me a while and a few conversations with the people who look after my career to actually think he might have been serious so I started listening to their classic album Parallel Lines and thought about the kind of things Debbie might sing about and came up with Drag You Around," Barus continued. "It's me imagining the kind of relationship Debbie would be in. She would kick arse and be dragging whoever it was around. That's the image I wanted anyway."

    Life's Been Good Lyrics

I have a mansion but forget the price
Ain't never been there, they tell me it's nice
I live in hotels, tear out the walls
I have accountants, pay for it all

They say I'm crazy but I have a have a good time
I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime
Life's Been Good to me so far

    My Maseratti does one-eighty-five
I lost my license, now I don't drive
I have a limo, ride in the back
I lock the doors in case I'm attacked

I'm making records, my fans they can't wait
They write me letters, tell me I'm great
So I got me an office, gold records on the wall
Just leave a message, maybe I'll call

Lucky I'm sane after all I've been through
(Everybody say I'm cool, he's cool)
I can't complain but sometimes I still do
Life's been good to me so far

I go to parties sometimes until four
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door
It's tough to handle this fortune and fame
    Everybody's so different, I haven't changed

They say I'm lazy but it takes all my time
(Everybody say oh yeah, oh yeah)
I keep on goin' guess I'll never know why
Life's been good to me so far

    Life's Been Good
  • This is a humorous look at the spoils of fame and fortune associated with being a rock star. Walsh pokes fun at the lifestyle of wealth and fame and the spoiled mentality - how it's not me that's changed, but everyone else. In a 1981 interview with the BBC, Walsh explained: "I wanted to make a statement involving satire and humor, kind of poking fun at the incredibly silly lifestyle that someone in my position is faced with – in other words, I do have a really nice house, but I'm on the road so much that when I come home from a tour, it's really hard to feel that I even live here. It's not necessarily me, I think it paraphrases anyone in my position, and I think that's why a lot of people related to it, but basically, that's the story of any rock star – I say that humbly – anyone in my position. I thought that was a valid statement, because it is a strange lifestyle – I've been around the world in concerts, and people say 'What was Japan like?', but I don't know. It's got a nice airport, you know... so it was kind of an overall statement."
  • This is the last song on the the album. On the original recording from this album, the music fades away into silence. Then, about 30 seconds later, there is a really funny secret message from Joe Walsh which says "Wha-oh...here comes a flock of wanh-wanhs!", followed by a chorale of "wannh", "wanh" "wahn" (collectively sounding like a bunch of ducks or sheep). (thanks, Dave - Marieta, GA)
  • The cover of the But Seriously Folks album shows Walsh eating a meal... under water. In the same BBC interview, he said: "I had to do that a couple of times, but I did go down to the bottom of the pool, and almost drowned... but it was fun. Not at the time, but it was fun to do. We weighted everything down, but it was very involved and it took a long time, and I was real proud of it. As long as you have access to art, or visually presenting something with your record, I would like to use that, pursue it and try to make it an integral part of the music. It was hard to do, but when I look at it, I can't believe it either, I can't believe I was stupid enough to do that, but I was proud of it. I won't be repeating it, I can assure you!" (see the cover in Song Images)
  • In 1979, Walsh announced his campaign for President of the United States, promising "Free gas for everyone" if he won (he didn't). (thanks, Stevie Lee - WSFR, Louisville, KY)
  • A famous line in this song, "My Maserati does 185," was used as the title to a 2005 episode of the TV series Entourage.

I’m the kid from out of town, try to get me some

And you know what she meant

    So come on

    And you know, oh
    How it goes

    So come on

  • This single was inspired by Cody's love for surfing, and by his girlfriend, model Gigi Hadid, who is the daughter of TV personality Yolanda Foster.
  • Cody sings, "she on my surfboard, surfboard, gonna ride it- surfboard," in a similar fashion to Beyoncé's references to surfboards on her "Drunk In Love" single. Cody told MTV News that it was just coincidence that both he and Queen B croon lines about the long narrow board used to ride over waves. The Aussie singer added that he actually recorded the track before Beyoncé's single dropped. "Everyone was like, 'Beyonce did that' and I had the idea for a while. And then Beyonce's came out and I absolutely love that song, but when I heard it I didn't know if it was going to affect my idea at all," Cody said. "And at the end of the day I thought about it so much and I thought 'Hey it's a part of pop culture right now,' if I was going to release this song it would probably be the best time to do it, so I decided why not just go along with it now."
  • The song's music clip finds Cody creating his own surfboard from scratch. "I co-directed that video actually," he told MTV News. "I had a vision for the video to stay true to my Australian boy roots. I've been surfing my whole life just growing up in that culture."

We also see Cody on the beach and splashing in the water with his girlfriend, Gigi Hadid. "Working with my girl makes it so much more comfortable. I've never had a girlfriend in a music video before..." Cody said. "I thought, might as well have the girl in that inspired the song, and it just made the chemistry so natural. Some scenes where they didn't end up putting in the video was us kissing or whatever, but we ended up shooting those scenes as options, and they ended up yelling 'cut,' and we didn't stop."

    Beck's Bolero Lyrics

    Beck's Bolero
  • Beck recorded this with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Keith Moon and Nicky Hopkins during a single-day recording session in 1966. They planned to record a whole album, but contractual obligations prevented them from recording together again, and this was the only song from that session that was released. This Beck/Page/Jones/Moon/Hopkins combination had the makings of a supergroup, and it nearly happened, but they couldn't find a suitable lead singer, failing to pry Steve Marriott away from Small Faces. Page and Jones then formed Led Zeppelin.
  • In a 1977 interview with Guitar Player magazine, Jimmy Page said: "On the 'Beck's Bolero' thing I was working with that, the track was done, and then the producer just disappeared. He was never seen again; he simply didn't come back. Napier-Bell, he just sort of left me and Jeff to it. Jeff was playing and I was in the box (recording booth). And even though he says he wrote it, I wrote it. I'm playing the electric 12-string on it. Beck's doing the slide bits, and I'm basically playing around the chords. The idea was built around (classical composer) Maurice Ravel's 'Bolero.' It's got a lot of drama to it; it came off right. It was a good lineup too, with Keith Moon, and everything."

    Go!
    Tell me your misery
    Give us the antidote
I heard the voice of change
    Behind a vacant note

    All this tearing apart
    Without a reform
    Call it what you will
    I'm not afraid to say

I've heard it all, connection lost
    We're standing by, Artificial Light
You sell a fix for our defect
And all we find, artificial light

    Doesn't break the model
I can't feel it in my bones
    Nothing shattering my world (No!)

    We want a real cure
    Not idle sympathy
    The dark consuming light
That you have failed to be

    No, it's not enough
    I resent this deprivation
Your remedy is not a weapon
    To slaughter the sorrow
It's just to keep you from feeling alone

I've heard it all, connection lost
    We're standing by, artificial light
You sell a fix for our defect
And all we find, artificial light

    Artificial Light
  • The structure of this song is a bit more complex that most of the others on Extremist. Vocalist Ryan Clark explained to Decibel magazine: "There are a couple points in the song that stray from what's most typical for us. The verse segment plays with an interesting time signature, which is a little different for us. And the title of the song is actually heard in the pre-chorus, as opposed to the chorus, which is the only example of this on the record."
  • The song's vibrant melodic death metal sound highlights the influences of Swedish bands like At The Gates, In Flames and Soilwork. Clark told Decibel: "There's a delicate balance of ferocity and melody in these bands, whether it's in the music or the vocal — or both — that to me, is unrivaled in most other sub-genres."

    Chiquitita, tell me what's wrong
You're enchained by your own sorrow
In your eyes there is no hope for tomorrow
How I hate to see you like this
There is no way you can deny it
I can see that you're oh so sad, so quiet

    Chiquitita, tell me the truth
I'm a shoulder you can cry on
Your best friend, I'm the one you must rely on
You were always sure of yourself
    Now I see you've broken a feather
I hope we can patch it up together

    Chiquitita, you and I know
How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they're leaving
You'll be dancing once again and the pain will end
You will have no time for grieving
    Chiquitita, you and I cry
But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you
Let me hear you sing once more like you did before
    Sing a new song, Chiquitita
Try once more like you did before
    Sing a new song, Chiquitita

So the walls came tumbling down
And your love's a blown out candle
All is gone and it seems too hard to handle
    Chiquitita, tell me the truth
There is no way you can deny it
I see that you're oh so sad, so quiet

    Chiquitita
  • Originally, this was called "In The Arms Of Rozellita." Bjorn Ulvaeus, who wrote the song, liked the title but couldn't find a matching story, so it became "Chiquitita." (thanks, royi - Rishon Le Zion, Israel)
  • ABBA performed this song in 1979 at the Music for UNICEF Concert. ABBA donated half the proceeds from the song to UNICEF. (thanks, Vineeta - Rockville, MD)
  • Chiquitita, in Spanish, means "Very Little Girl." (thanks, Kyre - Atlanta, GA)
  • To facilitate a breakthrough in South America, ABBA recorded a Spanish-language version of this song, despite the fact the band had never learned the language. The Swedes sang the song phonetically and their efforts enhanced their popularity in a number of Latin America countries.
  • This song reached #1 in Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Rhodesia, South Africa, Spain and Switzerland. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)
  • Leona Lewis performed this while she was a contestant on The X Factor (UK) in 2006.

    The Last One Alive Lyrics

    Did anyone survive?
I swear I heard your voice beyond this side
    Does anyone still try?
Does anyone still hope to set their eyes beyond this place?

Where angels fall and darkness reigns
Where time dissolves the brightest flame
    Ever the same

Whether I'm The Last One Alive
    Or ascend before my time
Better I'm the last one alive
    Than a soul denied

So this is how we break
And this is where we find the only hope within this place

Where angels fall and darkness reigns
Where time dissolves the brightest flame
    Ever the same

Whether I'm the last one alive
    Or ascend before my time
Better I'm the last one alive
    Than a soul denied

Whether I'm the last one alive
    Or ascend before my time
Better I'm the last one alive
    Than a soul denied

Whether I'm the last one alive
    Or ascend before my time
Better I'm the last one alive
Than a soul denied (Soul denied)

    I'm the last one alive
    Or ascend before my time
Better I'm the last one alive
    Than a soul denied

    The Last One Alive
  • Vocalist Ryan Clark discussed this song during a track-by-track interview with Decibel magazine. "I think this song falls somewhere in the 'Fading Away' or 'Collapsing' realm," he said. "It's that middle-ground territory that ended up being more of a focus on this record — songs that maintain a heavy groove, but lean more on melodic vocals than the split scream/sing structure that's more typical for us.

I guess you could call it closer to hard rock than straight-ahead metal, but that's what I've always loved about this band," Clark continued. "We've allowed ourselves loose enough boundaries to be able to explore everything from relentlessly heavy to slow and somber — hopefully without any of it sounding like a departure. With this mindset, I feel like I have the potential to be creatively satisfied on a number of levels that I wouldn't have if we just aimed for heavy all the time.

I was really pleased with the chorus melody from the start, but I think what really pushes the chorus over the top is the harmony, which (producer) Aaron Sprinkle had a lot to do with," Clark added. "He's great at hearing harmonies that might not be a natural go-to for me."
  • The song's music video was directed by Belief Agency and features Demon Hunter performing outdoors at night. A group of lit torches cuts through the darkness.

Ryan Clark explained: "The video explores the concept of being chastised for one's beliefs - in a very real sense. We shot this video on the property surrounding my house. Since it had to be shot entirely in the dark, we had to wait for nightfall to start filming."

"At one point my neighbors drove up our street past about 12 torch-wielding hooded figures - and that was after they watched us build and ignite a massive pyre. I can only imagine what they think of their new neighbors."
