Never My Love Lyrics

You ask me if there'll come a time
When I grow tired of you
Never My Love
Never my love

You wonder if this heart of mine
Will lose its desire for you
Never my love
Never my love

What makes you think love will end
When you know that my whole life depends
On you (on you)

Never my love
Never my love

You say you fear I'll change my mind
And I won't require you
Never my love
Never my love

How can you think love will end
When I've asked you to spend your whole life
With me (with me, with me)

Never My Love
  • This was written by the songwriting team of Don and Dick Addrisi. As The Addrisi Brothers, they went on to have hits with "We've Got To Get It On Again" and "Slow Dancin' Don't Turn Me On."

Unlike "Cherish," which is often thought of as a love song but deals with the unrequited, slightly obsessive kind, "Never My Love" is a perfect wedding song, as it is about unrelenting devotion: "How can you think love will end when I've asked you to spend your whole life with me?"
  • According to BMI, which keeps track of such data, "Never My Love" was the second-most played song on American radio and television in the 20th century, trailing only "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" by the Righteous Brothers. Another Association song, "Cherish," was #22.
  • The 5th Dimension's live recording of "Never My Love" peaked in the US at #12 in 1971, and Blue Suede's uptempo 1974 version reached #7. (thanks, Rick - San Juan, Puerto Rico)

  • Metallica's Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone the song is, "fairly representative of where our creative headspace is at right now. It's one of those things that's like, 'Here, we're writing and we're creating.'"
  • Lars Ulrich told Metal Hammer the song was written about the band's 2014 tour. He said: "It's about being outdoors and festivals and here we are again."

    Indiana Wants Me Lyrics

Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there.
Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there,
I wish I had you to talk to.

If a man ever needed dyin', he did,
No one had the right to say what he said about you,
And it's so cold and lonely here without you.
Out there the law's a comin',
I'm gettin' so tired of runnin'
Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there
Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there.

I wish I had you to talk to.
It hurts to see the man that I've become,
And to know I'll never see the morning sunshine on the land,
I'll never see your smiling face or touch your hand.
If just once more I could see you, our home and our little baby.
Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there
Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there.

I wish I had you to talk to.
I hope this letter finds its way to you,
Forgive me, love, for the shame I put you through and all the tears,
Hang on, love, to the mem'ries of those happy years.
Red lights are flashin' around me
Yeah, love it looks like they found me.

Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there
Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there.
I wish I had you to talk to
Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there
Indiana Wants Me, Lord, I can't go back there.

    Indiana Wants Me
  • In this song, a man is in trouble with the law after murdering another man who said something insulting about a woman who is either his wife or lover (Talk about overreacting!). The man is lonely and scared. He's tired of running and hiding from the Indiana police, and he misses his wife/lover and their child.
  • On early copies of this song, it opens with the wail of a police siren, which is later heard during the instrumental bridge. The siren sounded (for its time) so realistic that some drivers pulled over to the side of the road when they heard the song on their car radios. When the confusion was discovered, Rare Earth (the record company that Taylor was signed with) gave radio stations (particularly those that were too skeptical and/or scared to play the song) a second version without the siren. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for above 2)
  • When this song hit the charts, Taylor become one of the few white artists to score a hit for Motown Records. He was already a successful songwriter for the label, with a hand in writing the hit "Love Child." "Indiana Wants Me" was his only American hit, but in England, he also scored with "Gotta See Jane," "There's A Ghost In My House" and "Window Shopping."
  • Indiana wanted him because he defended his lady's honour, apparently with a gun. In the July 6, 1974 issue of Melody Maker, Taylor explained the inspiration for the song.
'I was living in a fleabag hotel and one night I heard these sirens and somebody was breaking in a store below. I looked out and police had surrounded this store and I turned my tape-recorder on. I saw Bonnie and Clyde a couple of times and with those two things that's how I came to write "Indiana".'
  • Although there are no sirens on the later release of this song, it does include a police radio. Along with "There's A Ghost In My House" this was unarguably Taylor's biggest hit, and unlike "Ghost..." it sold well on both sides of the Atlantic, topping the singles chart in his native Canada.
  • This was released on the Rare Earth label backed by "Love's Your Name" and also on Tamla Motown backed by "Gotta See Jane". (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England, for above 3)

  • Patti Smith recorded this collaborative track with the American string ensemble Kronos Quartet and Clint Mansell for the soundtrack of the Darren Aronofsky movie Noah. Smith had approached the director asking if she could write the lullaby that was referenced in the script and this was the result.
  • Frequent Aronofsky collaborator Mansell, who scored the entire soundtrack, said: "My orchestrator Matt Dunkley and I arranged the music which we roughly laid out alongside Patti's demo, and then we had Kronos and Patti play together in the studio, so it was all done in quite an old school way. This process allowed Patti and Kronos to really express themselves and really find their performance."
  • Patti Smith (from NME): "Darren told me how he wanted a lullaby for Noah to sing to a child. The idea of the song is mercy as a healing wind."
  • This is sung by both Noah and his stepdaughter in the movie. Patti Smith then performs the song over the end credits. "I thought Darren (Aronofsky) would want me to deliver it more like a heavy metal ballad," said Smith. "But he wanted it to maintain its integrity as a lullaby. Even when I sang it with Kronos Quartet, I was still delivering it a little more aria-like, and he asked me if I could step back a bit with it."

    Jimmy Lyrics

What was it like to see
The face of your own stability
    Suddenly look away
Leaving you with the dead and hopeless?
    Eleven and she was gone.
Eleven is when we waved good-bye.
    Eleven is standing still,
Waiting for me to free him
    By coming home.
    Moving me with a sound.
    Opening me within a gesture.
    Drawing me down and in,
Showing me where it all began,
    Eleven.
It took so long to realize that
You hold the light that's been leading me back home.
    Under a dead Ohio sky,
Eleven has been and will be waiting,
    Defending his light,
    And wondering
Where the hell have I been?
    Sleeping, lost, and numb.
So glad that I have found you.
I am wide awake and heading home.
    Hold your light,
    Eleven.
Lead me through each gentle step by step
    By inch by loaded memory.
    I'll move to heal
As soon as pain allows so we can
Reunite and both move on together.
    Hold your light,
Eleven. Lead me through each gentle step by step
    By inch by loaded memory
'Til one and one are one, eleven,
    So glow, child, glow.
    I'm heading back home.

  • Prince and Zooey Deschanel premiered a snippet of this duet during the 2014 post-Super Bowl episode of New Girl. Thanks to Purple One's appearance in the Fox comedy, it became the top-rated scripted telecast among the big four TV networks in three years, averaging nearly 26 million viewers.
  • The song was dropped as a single on March 18, 2014 via an agreement with major label Epic Records and L.A. Reid. It was the first time that Prince and the veteran executive had teamed up on a release.
  • Prince's appearance on New Girl also featured the Purple One dishing out relationship advice to Zooey Deschanel's Jess character. His guest role resulted after the Minneapolis superstar reached out to the show's producers. "He said, 'I'm a big fan. I'd love to do the show at some point in the future,'" said New Girl creator Liz Meriwether.
  • Deschanel is an accomplished vocalist as well as an actress and has teamed up with singer-songwriter M. Ward to release a series of albums under the moniker She & Him. However, prior to this duet, Deschanel's singing had previously never featured on New Girl (outside of the theme song). The Hollywood Reporter asked Meriwether whether having Prince there changed that? "It might, it might," she replied with a laugh.

"That was also definitely about trying to figure out what was within the world of the show, but it was just so fun to watch and shoot. We just felt, again, it was one of those moments where we're like, 'Well, let's just go for it.' I think we can come back from this without losing all of our integrity. Basically, it's just awesome to see."
  • The song was reworked in 2015 by Prince for his HITnRUN album.

    Everytime Lyrics

    Notice me
    Take my hand
    Why are we
    Strangers when
    Our love is strong
    Why carry on without me

Every time I try to fly I fall
    Without my wings
    I feel so small
I guess I need you baby
    And every time I see
    You in my dreams
    I see your face
    It's haunting me
I guess I need you baby

    I make-believe
    That you are here
    It's the only way
    That I see clear
    What have I done
You seem to move on easy

    [Chorus]
Every time I try to fly I fall
    Without my wings
    I feel so small
I guess I need you baby
    And every time I see
    You in my dreams
    I see your face
    You're haunting me
I guess I need you baby

I may have made it rain
    Please forgive me
    My weakness caused you pain
    And this song's my sorry

    At night I pray
That soon your face will fade away

    [Chorus]

  • This song is about a girl who wants it all to work out - she wants everyone to like her, but realizes the world isn't fair. Not everyone is going to like you, and even though someone might make you mad, he could be the true one to you. It's more then she can handle, she is so sorry for everything she might put the guy through and she is "sorry if her weakness caused pain." (thanks, Keri - Montague, MI)
  • Britney wrote this about her ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake. She said she wrote it at a hard time in her life. Some of the lyrics are a reply to Justin's "Cry Me A River":
"I may have made it rain
    Please forgive me
    My weakness caused you pain
And this song is my sorry"
She is probably referring to the rain that's pouring in his video. The weakness is men. (thanks, Jimena - ottawa, Canada)
  • This was co-written by Britney Spears and her back-up singer Annette Artani.
  • Actor Stephen Dorf plays the man in the video. The clip was directed by David LaChapelle and portrayed Spears as a star hounded by photographers, which eventually kills herself by taking prescription drugs and drowning in a bathtub. "It was a little weird. [Director David LaChapelle] just told me to dis her and just kind of ignore her so I was just playing like a boyfriend in a fight," Dorff recalled to MTV News of his opening limo scene with Spears, in which the two were surrounded by paparazzi. "This is our take on paparazzos too. They put prosthetic noses on all of them, which is funny. You see how they all look kind of weird. You see all the noses."

When it came to the pivotal part of the clip where Dorff comes to a drowning Britney's aid, he told MTV News he was responsible for most of the scene. "That was my idea. I knew I had to save her in the bathtub, but it was my idea to go in with the shoes and the jeans and just kind of find her," he said. "First they had me change into my boxers. I was like, 'I don't think he has time. She's dying.' So I just go in."

    Party girls don't get hurt
Can't feel anything, when will I learn
I push it down, push it down

I'm the one "for a good time call"
Phone's blowin' up, they're ringin' my doorbell

I'm gonna swing from the Chandelier, from the chandelier
I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist
    Like it doesn't exist
I'm gonna fly like a bird through the night, feel my tears as they dry
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier

And I'm holding on for dear life, won't look down won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light, 'cause I'm just holding on for tonight
Help me, I'm holding on for dear life, won't look down won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light, 'cause I'm just holding on for tonight
    On for tonight

Sun is up, I'm a mess
Gotta get out now, gotta run from this
Here comes the shame, here comes the shame

    1, 2, 3 1, 2, 3 drink

    Chandelier
  • This swooping serenade about a party girl's life was the first solo single by Sia in four years, following the release of her 2010 studio album We Are Born. (She did contribute "Elastic Heart" to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack in 2013 with Diplo and The Weeknd). Between the two releases, the Australian singer-songwriter "retired" and began co-writing hit songs for the likes of Rihanna ("Diamonds"), David Guetta ("Titanium") and Flo Rida "Wild Ones"). Speaking with Billboard magazine, Sia discussed her decision to remain out of the spotlight. "I don't care about commercial success," she said. "I get to do what I love and communicate whatever I want."
  • The song stemmed from an impromptu jam session between Sia and pop producer Jesse Shatkin. "I usually think, 'Oh this would work for Rihanna, or this would be a good one for B or Katy,'" Sia said to Ryan Seacrest. "But this time I was like, 'Uh oh I think I just wrote a full-blown pop song for myself by accident!'"
  • Shatkin and Sia came up with the song whilst working with hit producer Greg Kurstin (Pink, Kesha, Kelly Clarkson). "At some point, Greg had to run out, and me and Sia were in his live room with his piano and drum set and just kind of jammed for a second," Shatkin recalled to MuuMuse . "Greg has a marimba, so I was playing marimba - some weird notes - and Sia was playing the piano."

"She records everything on her phone, so we just kind of figured out a chord progression together," Shatkin continued. "She sent it to me on a voice note, and I turned it into a track. She already had the melody instinctively while she was writing the chords. We were real excited that she wanted to do this for her record, and then Greg added his production. I was really proud of it."
  • Kurstin explained his contribution to Rock Genius : "'Chandelier' was written by Sia and Jesse Shatkin," he said. "Sia brought it in for me to work on and tie into the other songs on the record. I added some acoustic piano, Mellotron and live drums over the track. I left most of Jesse's production; which was awesome."
  • The song's music video features a dance performance from a Sia-wigged Maddie Ziegler. The 11-year-old star of Lifetime's Dance Moms was personally asked to be in the clip by the singer. Sia co-directed the visual with Daniel Askill, who previously helmed the visual for her hit single "Breathe Me."
  • Speaking with Dazed, Sia explained the blonde bob worn by her in the 1000 Forms of Fear artwork and by Maddie Ziegler in the music video is a layer of protection from the outside world. "I already have a much larger concept for this album and for how I'm going to present it and that was: I don't want to be famous," she said. "If Amy Winehouse was a beehive then I guess I'm a blonde bob. I thought 'well if that's my brand, how can I avoid having to use my face to sell something', so my intention was to create a blonde bob brand."
  • The song is a rejoinder to all those pop tunes that celebrate the non-stop party. It is rooted in the now-sober Sia's past struggles with alcoholism. "That's why 'Chandelier' was interesting to me. I wrote the song because there's so many party-girl anthems in pop," she told NPR. "And I thought it'd be interesting to do a different take on that."
  • Sia and Greg Kurstin wrote this very quickly. "'Chandelier' took like four minutes to write the chords, then like 12-15 minutes to write the lyrics," she told NPR. "Probably 10 or 15 minutes to cut the vocals."
  • 1000 Forms Of Fear topped the US albums chart. Sia's previous best was 2008's Some People Have Real Problems, which peaked at #26. In addition to reaching #1 on the Billboard list, the LP reached the summit on the iTunes albums chart in 47 countries.
  • The song was a wordwide hit, topping the singles charts in France, Israel and Poland.
  • This song featured in a 2014 Saturday Night Live skit where Jim Carrey and Kate McKinnon each show up to a Halloween office gathering dressed as "the child dancer from Sia's 'Chandelier' music video." The sketch resolves with the pair dancing to the song throughout the entire studio.
  • Billboard magazine chose this as their Best Song of 2014. They said: "The towering YOLO anthem 'Chandelier' took months to reach the Top 10 of the Hot 100 chart, but pop purveyors embraced its sentiment and Sia's performance almost immediately, turning the camera-shy Australian into an American star."
  • Sia concealed her face during performances of this song. When she was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, she sang it with her face obscured by her wig while a mine acted out the song next to her. On The Graham Norton Show, she faced a wall while the dancer Denna Thomsen performed. Sia's faceless appearances were her reaction to the soul-sucking nature of fame and predatory, vapid celebrity journalism.
  • This was nominated for Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Music Video and Best Pop Solo Performance, but didn't win any as Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" took the first two and Pharrell Williams' "Happy" the later two.

Sia did perform the song, however, singing it while facing a wall in a set that resembled the music video, while Kristen Wiig and Maddie Ziegler did the interpretive dance.
  • The video was choreographed by Ryan Heffington, who also did Sia's "Elastic Heart" clip. Speaking with Bullett magazine, he explained: "The song is about addiction, yet the video concept is more abstract than just this. What I find important is that this piece of art has so many interpretations. I don't think I could (or in fact want to) create such definition of the plot, it lives much more vibrant if I do not."

He added: "Early on I requested the architectural detailing of the character's living space and what furniture would inhabit it. Like any of our dwellings we spend an absorbent amount of time in, all material components becomes part of the physical dialogue between us and these objects - walls, furniture, hallways. Although muddled in color and sparse in content, it was a choice to have the environment be rich in means of activity for the character. How often do children find a pile of dirt and a hose the most enthralling playmates? Yes, she may be isolated from other humans or environments, but seemingly rich in imagination with the ability to utilize fantasy to entertain herself via exploring new physical conversations with what simply existed before her eyes."

Traveled down the road and back again
Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant

    I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And if you threw a party
    Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say

Thank you for being a friend (4x)

If it's a car you lack
I'd surely buy you a Cadillac
Whatever you need any time of the day or night

    I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And when we both get older
With walking canes and hair of gray
Have no fear even though it's hard to hear
I will stand real close and say

Thank you for being a friend

    And when we die
    And float away
    Into the night
    The milky way
    You'll hear me call
    As we ascend
    I'll say your name
    Then once again

  • This Beekeeper track is a duet with Irish folk singer Damien Rice, who is best known for his UK Top Ten hit "Cannonball."
  • During an interview with Uncut magazine, the comment was made that it's interesting that Amos had written a song about sin and sensuality when the biggest moral debates in the US are about abortion and gay rights. She replied: "America is such a land of extremes. On the one hand, you have this puritanical ideology that lots of people have adopted and on the other you have a huge porn industry that exploits everybody and makes lots of money."

"The thing that's missing from both is sensuality, and I think that's the sign of a damaged society," she continued. "Its not healthy for sex and sexuality to always be portrayed as dirty or depraved and what it takes to turn people on sometimes shocks me."

"There are a lot of damaged women out there who cant respond unless they take on another character because they haven't been taught they can just be a worker bee," Amos added. "I'm a worker bee and I love being a worker bee."
  • One of the song's lyrics questions "who is this terrorist?" Amos explained: "I've followed the US administration and I genuinely believe they've emotionally blackmailed and manipulated the American people. We're living in a frightening time and I wish people would wake up and realise they're surrendering their civil liberties." That's what someone told me but I don't know what it means.

Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time

    Caught in my fears
    Blinking back the tears
I can't say you hurt me when you never let me near
And I never drew one response from you
All the while you fell all over girls you never knew
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think it's gonna hurt me for a long long time

    Wait for the day
    You'll go away
Knowing that you warned me of the price I'd have to pay
    And life's full of flaws
    Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory of a love that never was
Cause I've done everything I know to try and change your mind
and I think I'm gonna miss you for a long long time
Cause I've done everything I know to try and make you mine
And I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time.

    Long, Long Time
  • This was Ronstadt's first hit record as a solo artist. Her 1967 song "Different Drum" was attributed to The Stone Poneys.
  • This was Linda's first foray into Country-styled ballads.
  • At the time this song was released, her backing band included Don Henley and Glenn Frey, who would later form the nucleus of the Eagles. (thanks, Charles - Charlotte, NC, for all above)

    Ode to Nick Drake Lyrics

    Ode to Nick Drake
  • As the title implies, this song is a tribute to Nick Drake, an influential British musician who was just 26 years old when he died of an antidepressant drug overdose in 1974. The dreamy tone of the song is typical of Drake's work, and not at all what you might expect from a former member of Guns N' Roses.

Matt Sorum joined GnR in 1990, taking over on drums after Steven Adler left the band. A former session drummer, Sorum has a wide range of musical interests and influences. He discovered Nick Drake when a friend played him Drake's song "River Man."

"I was just blown away with the emotion of his voice, and these string arrangements were incredible," Sorum said. "So when I went to write the lyrics for 'Ode to Nick Drake,' I basically wanted to write a love song about my wife, and what would be the other factor that would be in that equation? And I just thought, Wow, Nick Drake, I could use it as a metaphor for love. Then I basically did the idea of what David Bowie used to do. He used to write down lyrics, like, different words, and he would put them on pieces of paper and cut them up and put them on the table. So I wrote down titles of Nick Drake songs, and album titles - Pink Moon, Five Leaves Left - and I put them around and I started writing all the verses based on these Nick Drake titles.

And I thought about one of my greatest places growing up, which was this lake. My grandmother had a lake house and I'd see her every summer. It was one of the most peaceful places I've ever been. I still look at it as the place I always felt the most calm, and it was a great time for me as a kid. My best time as a kid. So I started out the song saying, 'A child was born and a loon has told me.' I used to wake to this loon on the lake going, 'Ooo, ooo,' and I just always loved that sound.

I started writing the lyrics and it started to flow. I actually played guitar on that. It's me on guitar and my vocal and one cello. I played it for my wife and she said, 'I love that song, Matt, I love it! You've got to record that!' I said, 'Oh, yeah, baby, I wrote that for you.'" (Here's our full Matt Sorum interview .)
