Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) Lyrics

There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
And talk about their homes

And there's a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin' whiskey down
They say, Brandy, fetch another round
She serves them whiskey and wine

The sailors say Brandy, you're a fine girl(you're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be(such a fine girl)
Yeah your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea

Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Brandy loves

He came on a summer's day
Bringin' gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
No harbor was his home

The sailors say Brandy, you're a fine girl(you're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be (such a fine girl)
Yeah"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea

Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor stories
She could feel the ocean foam rise
She saw its ragin' glory
But he had always told the truth, lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand

At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say
She hears him say:Brandy, you're a fine girl (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
It is, yes it is,
Say, Brandy, you're a fine girl (you're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be (such a fine girl)
But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea

Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)
  • The four members of Looking Glass are alumni of Rutgers University, and the Spring 2009 Rutgers alumni magazine carried an article about this song and the band itself. The pertinent part reads:

"The band recorded the song seven times before they got it right. 'Brandy' - based on the name of (lead singer) Elliot Lurie's high school sweetheart 'Randy' - tells the story of a musician torn between his love for a life at sea and his love for a barmaid. Released as the B-side of 'Don't It Make You Feel Good,' the song was overlooked, as was the A-side, for that matter, until Harv Moore, a Washington DC disc jockey took it up as a personal cause. After years of playing covers and their originals at frat parties and bars in the New Brunswick area, Looking Glass was signed to Epic Records by the legendary Clive Davis.

The band, appearing on Dick Clark's American Bandstand and at Carnegie Hall, never came close to matching 'Brandy's' success. And by 1973, Lurie had left for a solo career. He was replaced, but the band soon fell apart. In 1995, Looking Glass reunited to perform 'Brandy' and 'Jimmie loves Mary-Anne' at a Madison Square Garden concert. in 2000, 'Brandy' was part of the sound track for the film Charlie's Angels, for which band members and Peter Sweval's estate each received a royalty check of $30K (Sweval died of AIDS in 1992).

The members of the band also receive the modest sum of $4K each year for the general use of the song. Says former drummer Jeff Grob, wistfully: 'If only liquor commercials were allowed on TV.

Where the former band members are today: Larry Gonsky RC'70 (keyboards) teaches music in the Morristown school district; Jeff Grob CC'85 (drums) after playing with the hard-rock band Starz, returned to school and earned his landscape architecture degree. He works for Stantec, which contributed to the redesign of Route 18. He still plays locally with Richie Ranno's All Stars; Elliot Lurie RC'70 (lead guitar) manages actors and recording artists, including Corbin Bleu of High School Musical fame, in Los Angeles. He worked as an independent music film supervisor and executive vice president of music at 20th Century Fox; Pieter Sweval RC'70 (bass) played with Starz and the disco band Skatt Bros before dying of AIDS in 192. Royalties are donated by Sweval's family to AIDS research." (thanks, Steven - Patterson, NY)
  • The band was signed by Clive Davis, a legendary record executive who has nurtured the careers of many successful artists, including Santana, Billy Joel and Whitney Houston. Davis has a knack for knowing a hit song when he hears one, but he got this one wrong, releasing it as the B-side of their song "Don't It Make You Feel Good." Harv Moore, a disc jockey in Washington DC, flipped the record and played "Brandy" instead. It became very popular in the DC area, and quickly spread nationwide.
  • This was not typical of the band's sound, which caused a problem at concerts. While audiences expected pop songs like this one, the Looking Glass played rock, which left the crowds disappointed. The band broke up less than two years later.
  • There was a song called "Brandy" by an artist named Scott English that was popular around the same time in the UK. When Barry Manilow recorded it, he changed the title to "Mandy" to avoid confusion with this song.

    Girl on TV Lyrics

I'm wishing on a falling star...
    Wondering where you are...

    [Chorus:]
I wished for you on a falling star
    Wondering where you are
Do I ever cross your mind
    In the warm sunshine
She's from the city of angels
Like Bette Davis, James Dean and Gable
Never know what she means to me
I fell for the girl that's on TV

Met her at a gala affair
She wore a green dress and everybody was there
Felt outta place as she looked into my eyes
Shook her hand around 9pm and now
I'm never gonna be the same again
Never have to be on a movie screen
To be the leading lady in all my dreams
    Shoobie-do-wop and scooby snacks
Met a fly girl and I can't relax
The only problem is she's a movie star, oh
My friends, they won't believe me
If they could only see me
At the risk of sounding cheesy
I think I fell for the Girl on TV

    [Chorus:]

    Everybody knows her name
Want to take her picture and they're glad she came
But I just want to be there when she's down, down
    (Be there when she's down)
    I don't want her autograph
I just want to call her up and make her laugh
Never had to be on the movie screen
To be the leading lady in all my dreams
    Shoobie-do-wop and scooby snacks
    I met a fly girl and I can't relax
Only problem is she's a movie star
My friends, they won't believe me
If they could only see me
At the risk of sounding cheesy
I think I fell for the girl on TV

    [Chorus:]

I wished for you on a falling star
I'm wishing on a star and I'm wondering where you are
    Wondering where you are
Do I cross your mind in the warm sunshine

Yeah, so I wished for you on a bright, shining star
Everywhere I look, there you are
It's the girl in the green dress
    She took my breath away
And now I look to the sky for the better day
To the beat why'all and scooby snacks
    I met a fly girl and I can't relax
Never had to be on the movie screen
'Cause she's the leading lady in all my dreams

    [Chorus:]

  • Rich Cronin began dating Jennifer Love Hewitt in 1999 after meeting her backstage at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards. The LFO lead singer wrote "Girl on TV" about Hewitt after she asked him to pen her a song. The gesture didn't prevent the actress from dumping Cronin the following year.
  • Hewitt also appeared in the song's music video, which was directed by Gregory Dark (Britney Spears' "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart," Linkin Park's "One Step Closer").

Sometimes I'm right and I can be wrong
My own beliefs are in my song
The butcher, the banker, the drummer and then
Makes no difference what group I'm in

I am Everyday People, yeah yeah

There is a blue one who can't accept the green one
For living with a fat one trying to be a skinny one
And different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and scooby dooby doo

Oh sha sha we got to live together

I am no better and neither are you
We are the same whatever we do
You love me you hate me you know me and then
You can't figure out the bag I'm in

I am everyday people, yeah yeah

There is a long hair that doesn't like the short hair
For bein' such a rich one that will not help the poor one
And different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and scooby dooby doo

Oh sha sha we got to live together

There is a yellow one that won't accept the black one
That won't accept the red one that won't accept the white one
And different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and scooby dooby doo

    Everyday People
  • Sly Stone wrote this about how everyone is essentially the same, regardless of race or background. Sly & the Family Stone was a mash up of musical styles with band members of different genders and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Billy Preston played organ on this. Preston has appeared on many famous songs, including some by The Beatles and Rolling Stones. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for above 2)
  • Joan Jett hit #37 in the US with her 1983 cover version. Aretha Franklin, Belle & Sebastian and Pearl Jam also recorded the song, and Arrested Development used it as the basis of their 1992 hit "People Everyday."
  • This was featured in a series of television commercials for Toyota in the late 1990s. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)
  • This song takes some inspiration from Mother Goose, adding a twist to the traditional nursery rhyme "Rub-a-dub-dub." The familiar three men in a tub - the butcher, the baker, the candlestick-maker - become the butcher, the banker, the drummer, and, in the spirit of the song's message of solidarity among all people, Sly adds: "makes no difference what group I'm in."
  • This was used in the 1982 drama Purple Haze, starring Peter Nelson; the 2008 romantic dramedy Definitely, Maybe, starring Ryan Reynolds; and the 2008 biopic Milk, about gay rights activist Harvey Milk, starring Sean Penn.
  • This was featured on the TV drama Scandal in the 2012 episode "Crash and Burn."

    Superstar Lyrics

We made love in a mad embrace
Now you say you don't know my face
    Superstar
You know just who you are

You tell the world, you don't even know me
A contradiction to the love you show
    Superstar
You know just who you are

    (Chorus):
I'm billie jean and I'm mad as hell
I'm a woman with a story to tell
    Superstar
You know just who you are
(Who you are, who you are, who you are)

You can't love a woman and push her aside
'Cause she got feelings, just like you do
    A woman's got her pride
I don't want nothing from you
    It's not what I'm about
But you've been lying, there's no denying
    Hey, hey, hey, hey

    [Chorus]

Late one night, you rang my phone
You called to make sure that I was all alone
You said you were feeling down
    And couldn't be seen around
    One thing led to another
You became my lover, you said
"Let's keep it secret, let's not spread it around"
You send me flowers and diamonds
And said that you were in love
You said you never met a girl
That you thought so much of

    Superstar
You know just who you are
(Who you are, who you are, who you are)

And then all of a sudden
    You just stopped coming by
You never called on the phone
    And I didn't know why
    Too many fellas nowadays
    Push their girl aside
First they get what they want
Then they run off and hide
    But baby, time went by
    I was not upset
And then much to my surprise
    One day to my regret
    Well the doctor said that
    There will soon be two
And there's a little one coming
    There's a man in you

    I was in shock
    I thought I'd faint
    And I was petrified
First I laughed 'cause I was happy
    Then I started to cry
And when the baby was born
    I sent you a telegram
    But it came back saying
You don't know who I am

    Superstar
You know just who you are
(Who you are, who you are, who you are)

I saw you in a club one night
And I did not intend to start a fight
But when you said who am I
    You don't know my face
    I went off, I made a scene
    I really wrecked the place
And I know you might be a big superstar
And the whole wide world knows who you are
But the next time we meet
If you don't want a scene
    Tip your hat with respect
    'Cause I am billie jean

    Superstar
You know just who you are
(Who you are, who you are, who you are)

    [Chorus]

I'm billie jean, I'm mad as hell
I'm billie jean, I'm mad as hell

I am back, this time, I'm The Big Surprise
And I'm hiding behind your sofa
I'm the culture shock, temporary block
And I?ll love you for the next five minutes

I'm your magazine, ?'cause you read me clean
Without taking any time for pictures
I'm your hand grenade and your lemonade
?'cause I?ll blow up and leave you soured

Find somebody with a working car
    And drive them crazy, too
    The big surprise is me

I worked extra hard to pick your birthday card
You just threw it out and kept my money
I got up at six to make your favorite dish
So I sank when you said, you weren't hungry

Filed your tax return, let some candles burn
Played Mozart, to make your plants grow
Then I clipped the trees, got down on my knees
Not to work, just to pray, you'd see me

Find somebody who will paint your house
    And gloss them over, too

Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy Lyrics

Captain Fantastic, raised and regimented, hardly a hero
Just someone his mother might know
Very clearly a case for Corn Flakes and classics
"Two teas both with sugar please"
In the back of an alley

While little dirt cowboys turned brown in their saddles
Sweet chocolate biscuits and red rosy apples in summer
For it's hay make and "Hey mom, do the papers say anything good
Are there chances in life for little dirt cowboys
Should I make my way out of my home in the woods"

Brown Dirt Cowboy, still green and growing
    City slick Captain
    Fantastic the feedback
The honey, the hive could be holding
For there's weak winged young sparrows that starve in the winter
Broken young children on the wheels of the winners
And the sixty-eight summer festival wallflowers are thinning

For cheap easy meals, hardly a home on the range
Too hot for the band with a desperate desire for change
We've thrown in the towel too many times
Out for the count and when we're down
Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy
From the end of the world to your town

And all this talk of Jesus coming back to see us
    Mmm mmm couldn't fool us
For we were spinning out our lines walking on the wire
Hand in hand went music and the rhyme
The Captain and the Kid stepping in the ring
From here on sonny sonny sonny, it's a long and lonely climb

For cheap easy meals, hardly a home on the range
Too hot for the band with a desperate desire for change
We've thrown in the towel too many times
Out for the count and when we're down
Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
From the end of the world to your town

Kneel down, put my faith in 'em, will you answer me?
But if God won't help me, this gun will, I swear I'm gon' find my way

  • The lyrics were inspired, in part, by an unfortunate news story in Stone Temple Pilots' hometown of San Diego, California about a missing young woman who was later discovered dead by local law enforcement ("And I feel, when the dogs begin to smell her...").

At a concert in Columbus, Ohio on May 17, 2008, lead singer Scott Weiland said that he and STP drummer Eric Kretz wrote the lyrics in a hot tub after hearing the story. Weiland has described the song as "a metaphor for a lost obsessive relationship."
  • This was STP's breakthrough hit off of their major label debut album. Like all of their songs of the era, it is a band composition. When we spoke with their drummer Eric Kretz in 2013, he said that it was a very collaborative and energetic time for the band in terms of songwriting. "There was enthusiasm and excitement and everyone was in the room and participating creatively, artistically," he explained. "It's the most fun time to be in a band when everyone has the same ideas and everyone has the same goals."
  • Bassist Robert DeLeo came up with the riff for this song in the back of a U-Haul truck the band was using for a local tour. The song's instantly recognizable chord structure was inspired by DeLeo's love of Ragtime music.
  • The most widely broadcast version of this song is an acoustic rendition that starts with Scott Weiland saying, "This is a song called 'Plush.'"

Thanks to "Sex Type Thing," the group was invited on the MTV metal show Headbangers Ball for an interview. Guitarist Dean DeLeo suggested that he bring his acoustic guitar so they could perform this song on the show, and the network agreed.

The show was recorded on December 5, 1992 after the band had finished a month of concerts opening for Rage Against the Machine. They took a plane to New York and ingested some pills to help them sleep. When they got to their hotel, DeLeo and Weiland both got sick, but they made it to the MTV Studios for the 6 a.m. taping, as Weiland recalled, "high as zombies."

In this altered state, DeLeo and Weiland performed the song, delivering a far more relaxed and poignant version than is heard on the album. This version also turned out to be quite radio-friendly, and lots of stations started playing it. This version made #39 on the US Airplay chart on August 14, 1993 and stirred a great deal of interest in the band, although listeners who bought the Core album expecting similarly mellow fare were in for an unpleasant surprise.

In America, no singles from Core were made available for purchase, since Atlantic Records liked selling $16 albums more than $2 singles.
  • The title never appears in the lyric, which is also true of the Core tracks "Sex Type Thing" and "Naked Sunday."
  • The line, "Where you going with the mask I found?" is often misheard as "Where you going with the master plan?" (thanks, Elliot - St. Louis, MO)
  • Scott Weiland told the English music publication NME that the band's name came from Scientifically Treated Petroleum - petrol. He explained: "STP came from the image of STP oil treatment, which was always a powerful image. Richard Petty, the famous NASCAR racing driver, had the STP logo on his car and he was always a sort of renegade. We were Shirley Temple's Pussy but we had to change. I think it was Dean (Deleo - STP guitarist or Robert (DeLeo - STP bassist) who said, 'How about Stereo Temple Pirates?' and then we decided on Stone Temple Pilots. It wasn't a very quick process."
  • This won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal. It's the group's only Grammy win.
  • Core was the only STP album where vocalist Scott Weiland was identified only by his last name. Some critics took this as a sign of pretense, mocking it in reviews that compared the band unfavorably to the likes of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nirvana. With many grunge bands being snatched up by record labels and foisted on the public at this time, it's understandable why critics were wary, but the Core album would later be vindicated as a classic of the era.
  • The video was directed by Josh Taft, who also did the videos for "Sex Type Thing" and "Lady Picture Show." The "Plush" video got a lot of airplay on MTV and earned Stone Temple Pilots the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1993.

All Is Fair In Love And Brostep
  • The title of this Recess opening track demonstrates that Skrillex doesn't take his 'brostep' reputation too seriously. He told NME: "I didn't think so many people would take [the title] so literally and not get that it's totally tongue-in-cheek. It's more of a statement that I don't care – you can take it any way you want. Haters will use that [song] name and do what they want with it. But other people will get the humor. The idea was just to open the record with something super in-your-face. It's a wake-up call."

    Little Invitro Lyrics

    I can't believe
That you're gone and we're alone
    I can't believe
That we'll never see your face

    I can't believe
That you're at the gates of Heaven
    I can't believe
    That we'll never know you

    If only, if only
    Miracles happened every day
    If only, if only
    I could believe in something

    Helpless we cried over you
    Empty and lost over you

    How in the world
Can they say that you're at peace?
    How in the world
Can they say that time will heal us?

    How in the world
Can we hope to be forgiven?
    How in the world
Can we know how we feel?

    If only, if only
    We could all live forever
    If only, if only
    No memories to remember

Words were not spoken for you
No grave marks our love for you
Broken our hearts call for you
No-one can blame us but you

How in the world can we ever smile again
How in the world can we live without you

    Coast Is Clear Lyrics

Ayo Peter! (Sorry man, y'all recording?)

What are the odds we'd even meet?
What does it mean? It's meant to be
Why hug a wall? Why hold a seat?
Not for nothin' but it ain't nothin' for us to dip out this club right now
Sh, I think the Coast Is Clear, let's go
Leave our coats and beers, let's go
Leave your girlfriends here, let's go
Leave your hopes and fears, let's go
    What you scared for?
    Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go

What's your interest are? Who you be with?
Can I ask a question? Can you keep a secret?
I don't really give a what! What I need to know is
Do you wanna fuck? Do you wanna fuck?
Do you wanna fuck? Do you wanna fuck?

What's your interest are? Who you be with?
Can I ask a question? Can you keep a secret?
I don't really give a what! What I need to know is
Do you wanna uh? Do you wanna uh?
Do you wanna uh? Do you wanna uh?

What's your interest are? Who you be with?
Can I ask a question? Can you keep a secret?)
I don't really give a what! What I need to know is
Do you wanna? Do you wanna? (Let's blow this Popsicle stand)

    Coast Is Clear
  • This song is a collaboration with Chance The Rapper and was recorded at a show on a mobile phone. Skrillex told NME: "Chance The Rapper has actually been a friend of mine for years. He was staying on our couch every time he came to LA, this was before Acid Rap or any of that came out. So he was in Seattle and we were kicking it and we made 'Coast Is Clear' after his show."
  • Skrillex told NME that selling loads of copies of Recess isn't high on his agenda. "I guess what it comes down to is crowd size," he said. "A couple of my tracks, like the Chance the Rapper song, got like 80,000 hits in a week. By the next day, kids were already singing along. So that's the measure of my success, if everyone is singing along and having a good time, that's dope. The record sales are trivial."
  • Skrillex commented to NME: "It's got elegance, but it's dirty and fun too, and the bassline is grimy. One for driving along the coast to a late-night party."
