Same Old Lang Syne Lyrics

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas Eve
I stood behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve

She didn't recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried

We took her groceries to the check out stand
The food was totaled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation lagged

We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn't find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how

She said she's married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didn't like to lie

I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw
Doubt or gratitude

She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was Hell

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving, in our eloquence
Another "Auld Lang Syne"

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away

Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And, as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain

Same Old Lang Syne
  • As Fogelberg tells it on his official website, the song is totally autobiographical. He was visiting family back home in Peoria, Illinois in the mid-'70s when he ran into an old girlfriend at a convenience store.

After Fogelberg's death from prostate cancer in 2007, the woman who he wrote the song about came forward with her story. Her name is Jill Greulich, and she and Fogelberg dated in high school when she was Jill Anderson. As she explained to the Peoria Journal Star in a December 22, 2007 article, they were part of the Woodruff High School class of 1969, but went to different colleges. After college, Jill got married and moved to Chicago, and Dan went to Colorado to pursue music. On Christmas Eve, they were each back in Peoria with their families when Jill went out for egg nog and Dan was dispatched to find whipping cream for Irish coffee. The only place open was a convenience store at the top of Abington Hill, at Frye Avenue and Prospect Road, and that's where they had their encounter. They bought a six pack of beer and drank it in her car for two hours while they talked.

Five years later, Jill heard "Same Old Lang Syne" on the radio while driving to work, but she kept quiet about it, as Fogelberg also refused to reveal her identity. Her main concern was that coming forward would disrupt Fogelberg's marriage.

Looking at the lyrics, Jill says there are two inaccuracies: She has green eyes, not blue, and her husband was not an architect - he was a physical education teacher, and it's unlikely Fogelberg knew his profession anyway. Regarding the line, "She would have liked to say she loved the man, but she didn't like to lie," Jill won't talk about it, but she had divorced her husband by the time the song was released.
  • The single was released about eight months ahead of the album, which was certified double platinum. The Innocent Age is a concept album consisting of a song cycle describing the many stages of life from cradle to grave. (thanks, Charles - Charlotte, NC)
  • "Auld Lang Syne" is a traditional song that is often sung on New Year's Eve. That's the reference in the title.
  • The melody phrase at the beginning of each verse ("Met my old lover at the grocery store...") was taken by Fogelberg from Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." (To get the effect, just sing that lyric twice, slightly speeded up. Maybe add a few fireworks explosions for good measure.) This song is one of several Pop tunes that have phrases or entire melodies ripped off from classical composers - Paul Simon's "American Tune" (from J.S. Bach), Billy Joel's "This Night" (from Beethoven), among others. (thanks, Peter - Little Silver, NJ)
  • When Fogelberg started writing this song, he considered it "a joke," essentially laughing at himself as he looked back on the fateful encounter at the convenience store. When he finished the song, he realized it was an important one so he saved it for his album The Innocent Age. It ended up being his best-known song, exemplifying the gentle but very emotional stories his lyrics portrayed.

In late 2007, Fogelberg died at age 56 due to prostate cancer.
  • Fogelberg performed this song long before he recorded it, including at benefit shows for Colorado senator Gary Hart, who would later be a top presidential candidate before getting caught in a sex scandal.
  • In 2008, Abingdon Street in Peoria, which was the location of the convenience store where the events of this song took place, was designated "Fogelberg Parkway" in honor of the singer.
  • This was released as a single in December 1980. Fogelberg's record company expected the album to follow soon after, but the singer had an epiphany when he sat down to sequence it on New Year's Eve: it should be a double album with a "song cycle" starting with nostalgia and coming up to the present. Fogelberg spent another six months writing new songs.

When "Same Old Lang Syne" peaked on the Hot 100 at #9 in February 1981, there was no album for fans to rush out to buy, which drove the record company nuts. Finally, the album emerged in August with "Lang Syne" the last song on the first disc. The wait was worth it: Three more singles were released, each making the US Top 20, and the album sold over two million copies.
  • Smooth jazz giant Michael Brecker played soprano saxophone on this song. His part is featured in the ending, and is an improvised, jazzy snippet of the classic holiday tune "Auld Lang Syne." Brecker died of leukemia (a blood cancer) in January of 2007 at age 57. (thanks, Tony - NYC, NY and Annabelle - Eugene, OR)

    I Luh Ya Papi Lyrics

I put it down for a brother like you
Give it to you right in the car, that's you
We can first give you some of this, that's you
And you're all loving that J.Lo, true

Hold up, I can get you thrown up
Pull your trigger, go and get your gun up
Imma tie my hair up top
Put a pin in it, now I'm ready, let it rock
Keep it number 1, that's easy mathematics
Keep it number 1, baby, ain't no static
Got that hourglass for you, baby, look at these legs
No brakes, go green, no red
If you wanna kill the body, gotta start with the head
Put it on you, I'mma need about 4-5 beds
    'Cause I love my papi

    I didn’t see it
    But I see it now
    I think I love you
    And I need you now
Ain’t had none like you in a while

I Luh Ya Papi, I luh ya papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi
    I luh ya papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi
    I luh ya papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi
    Yeah that my papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi

I put it down for a brother like you
Give it to you right in the car, that's you
We can first give you some of this, that's you
And you're all loving that J.Lo, true

    All day, 24 hour
Feeling like I want one when it's crowded
If you wanna hear your name, I shout it
Boy, you the shit, go and take a power shower
And I'm feeling like it's me and you, I don't doubt it
You can drop it how you want, I ain't trying to call Miley
    I'm loving me some you
Started from the bottom, baby, then we went roof
    'Cause I love my papi

    I didn’t see it
    But I see it now
    I think I love you
    And I need you now
Ain’t had none like you in a while

I luh ya papi, I luh ya papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi
    I luh ya papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi
    I luh ya papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi

    I luh ya papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi
    Yeah that my papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi

I love you, mami, I-I love you, mami
Baby, you the shit, I-I love you, mami
    Shorty got me catching feelings
And that Wraith drop reaching for the ceiling
    Southside Bronx, Teterboro jets overseas
Take the pants out here, drop to her knees
Oh my, I'm a don like Omar
Speed it up slow ma, throw it back, throw my
Rock-rock Gators like my Detroit players
You can hate to love us, you can love to hate us
From the bottom it been real
From the bottom shorty been trill
And even though we made it to the top
Still J.Lo from the-the the block
Ey, I love you, mami, I love you, mami
Baby, you the shit, I-I love you, mami

I think I love just who you are
    We haven’t grown apart
This is just the start where life begin, a way to the end
And we started as friends but boy I do love

I luh ya papi, I luh ya papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi
    I luh ya papi
I luh ya luh ya luh ya papi

    I Luh Ya Papi
  • This upbeat, summery track finds Lopez expressing her "luh" for her beau. Released as the third single from the singer's eighth album, the track got its first play during Lopez's trip to Power 106's New at 2 show with Yesi Ortiz on March 5, 2014.
  • Lopez enlisted fellow Bronx native French Montana, who jumps in at the end reciprocating the feelings for his true love. Speaking to Yesi Ortiz of her decision to have French Montana feature, the American-Puerto Rican singer said, "We're both from New York, and we both have similar backgrounds, and I wanted this record to have that vibe and he was just perfect for it so I was so happy when he heard this record and wanted to be a part of it."
  • The track was produced by Noel "Detail" Fisher, whose other credits include Lil Wayne's "How To Love," Beyoncé's "Drunk In Love" and Wiz Khalifa's "We Dem Boyz."
  • The music video was directed by Jessy Terrero in Miami, Florida. It is a comic clip where we see Lopez turning the tables on countless videos where men are objectifying women. She told Pop Crush : "It's funny, when I was doing the song, I felt like it was very tongue-in-cheek. I'm saying in the verses how I'm gonna put it down on you and how I want you and all this stuff, but then it's kind of like what guys do to girls. So in the song it's like, you know, they'll be with you and they'll talk about how much they want you, and then it'll be like … oh yeah, I didn't see it. I really love you. It's kind of that type of thing."

"And then [with] the video, we decided to do the same thing," Lopez continued. "The director came up with the concept to kind of flip the rap video — to make me the rapper and, you know, just turn the tables in that way... instead of having girls in bathing suits, have guys in bathing suits. Instead of having me be the soft girl in the video, be the rapper who's in the mansion and the yacht. It was all meant to be in good fun, but you know, I knew people would get the joke."
  • Lopez released a remix by DJ Khaled on April 21, 2014, featuring the original verse from French Montana, Big Sean's verse from the first remix, plus a new verse from Tyga.
  • The song was originally earmarked to be Tinashe's debut single. She recalled to The Fader: "It wasn't 'Papi' at first, it was 'I Luh You Nigga,' like, I luh ya luh ya luh ya nigga. They switched the swag up a little bit! It was intended for Aquarius and everything."

"Then Detail was in a session with J. Lo and he played her the track," Tinashe continued, "because you know these producers sometimes, they're like 'Yo, lemme play you my hot s--t!' I guess she obviously really liked it, and she cut her version.

"One day Detail calls me and is like 'B-T-dubs, J. Lo is singing that song.' I didn't believe it at first, I thought he was just not trying to give it to me for some reason," she added. "I was like 'J. Lo does not want that song, she's not gonna sing that.' And then it came out. I guess she wanted it."

Tinashe recorded "2 On" instead as her debut single, which peaked at #24 on the Hot 100. Lopez, meanwhile stalled at #77 with "Papi". "I wasn't tripping on it too much. I really roll with the punches," Tinashe said. "A lot of things happen for a reason. Timing always is perfect, even when you don't think it is. I clearly wasn't meant to have that song. Who knows, '2 On' might not have existed if I had it."

    Big Salty Tears
  • The Ziggens are a Southern California band who were signed to the Skunk Records label along with Sublime, whose lead singer Brad Nowell was a big fan of their music.
  • This song is about a guy who loves a girl but knows he can't have her, so he cries every time he thinks of her or drives by her house. The part where he says, "Making my face all fat fat fat" is about how he deals with the problem by overeating.
  • Sublime sometimes performed this song acoustically. They reference the track on their hit "Wrong Way" in the line, "Big salty tears rolling down to her chin and it smears up her make-up."

Yeah I've iced down a few thousand beers in my day
To put down twice as many
No telling how many bonfires have lit up my face
If it ain't hundreds, it ain't any
I stood on this stage so many times
And watched all my friends have the time of your life
But there's something in this spring time air tonight
Yea we're gonna do it up right

    Like We Ain't Ever
    All been together
And tried to make one night last forever
Once it's gone, you can't get it back
So lift 'em up, y'all, where you at
Let's fill up on this feel good
Like we don't know, know better
    Like we ain't ever

This ain't the first time we've
    Partied under these stars
    Making a hangover
Well, this time I got a few more songs
    In this old guitar
For you to pull your baby closer
    You pull your baby closer

    Like we ain't ever
    All been together
And tried to make one night last forever
Once it's gone, you can't get it back

    Like We Ain't Ever
  • The title track of Luke Bryan's Spring Break 6…Like We Ain't Ever EP comes from a phrase he probably heard during his college years. "You've heard the saying, 'Let's party tonight like we ain't ever,' and that's kind of the basis of it," Bryan said. "I'd originally just written the song just casually as a party song, and we had some summertime references in there, so we just changed the summertime stuff into springtime stuff and made it a fun Spring Break song."

Go Back to Your Woods Lyrics

Hide in the bayou under the gun
Been to the house of the rising sun
Come down here trying to make a connection
Must have a bad sense of direction

Go back Go Back to Your Woods
(Go back go back go back to your woods)
Go back go back go back to your woods
(Go back go back to your woods)

Carry a torch and an old stiletto
The sound of thunder all over the ghetto
One-eyed jacks and king with the axe
Come from the wrong side of the tracks

Go back go back to your woods
(Go back go back go back to your woods)
Go back go back go back to your woods
(Go back go back to your woods)

When the night goes down on Storyville
If the women don't get ya the music will
    Catch a thrill

You come down here in a four piece suit
Pork pie hat and the alligator boots
Keep jerking rabbits outta your hat
Now can ya pull a disappearing act

Go back go back to your woods
(Go back go back go back to your woods)
Go back go back go back to your woods
(Go back go back to your woods)

When the night goes down on Storyville
If the women don't get ya the music will
    Get your thrills

Go back go back go back to your woods
Go back go back go back to your woods
Go back go back go back to your woods
Go back go back go back to your woods

Go back go back to your woods
(Go back go back go back to your woods)
Go back go back go back to your woods
(Go back go back to your woods)

    Back to your woods

***?Names of various Mardi Gras Indian groups?***
    Going downtown all turned around
Before we came into this world
We came from a far off land
And now we are here to tell the story

And we comin from way back, way back
We got fire on the bayou,
    Injuns here they come
    From the reservations
Here they come, here they come

Everything and nothing matters now, with you
Hold your hair back if you feel unwell, do you?
Every night's the mark of a new day
and every day's the mark of something new
    Promise that you'll follow me
This wasn't meant for me and you

So hold on tight to everything you love
Honestly it's all I care about
Hold on tight to everything you love
Honestly it's all I'm thinking of
Hold on tight to everything you care about
Hopelessly it's all I dream about
Hold on tight cause this might be the last time we dance

Didn't say you couldn't do it well
Only said perhaps to try again
I could never stop from listening in
And someone's left the car engine running
Every night's the mark of a new day
And everyday's the mark of something new
    Promise that you'll follow me
I couldn't stand to be alone

    And it could wait
    Wait for the after show
I've got four more so why you bawling for?
I've got to hold back to then
And I couldn't have never swam better
But you could've turned the blind eye
But I've gone over the road
And I'm gonna go this time

So hold on tight to everything you love

    Monstrous
  • Frontman Joe Mount told NME: "Originally, the whole song was played on a Baldwin electric harpsichord, the same type used on 'Because' by the Beatles. It's a mediaeval style song about the end of the party, wanting, like, your parents to come and get you."
  • Mount told Artist Direct how the song came together: "That one started live. I sat down at the keyboard and came up with this keyboard line. It's normal for most people but weird for me. I recorded on a harpsichord, and it sounded like this crazy medieval dance."

"The lyrics were a bit odd for me," he added. "You become more comfortable with these things. We eventually replaced the medieval harpsichord with a slightly less medieval organ [Laughs]. It reminds me. I used to play this game Columns. It was like Tetris but on Sega. It reminds me of that game now!"
  • The recording of this song was a major source of irritation for Metronomy keyboardist Oscar Cash. Mount recalled to NME: "I drove him mad by asking him to play over and over again on harpsichord, on a synthesizer. I think he hates that song."

    Man On The Rocks
  • This is the title track of Mike Oldfield's 25th album. Recorded in the Bahamas, it was produced by Oldfield with Stephen Lipson (Jeff Beck, Paul McCartney) and features bassist Leland Sklar (Phil Collins, James Taylor) and drummer John Robinson (Michael Jackson, Daft Punk).
  • The genesis of the record was when Oldfield started playing Rolling Stones records, paying fresh attention to the drum clatter. "I listened to the snares," he told The Daily Telegraph. "And I started experimenting with these old blues slide guitar sections in open G tuning, which is what Keith Richards uses."
  • Oldfield tried singing the songs himself at first, before recruiting Luke Spiller from The Struts to interpret his words. "I thought: let me see if I can sing like Mick Jagger," he told The Daily Telegraph before adding that unimpressed with his efforts, he called his record company. "I asked them to recommend a rock vocalist with a really high range and I was instantly pointed toward Luke Spiller of The Struts. I went online and thought: yeah. He did a much better job of sounding like a rock star than me."
  • The title song is about addiction: "Not necessarily to drugs or alcohol," said Oldfield, "it can be to certain kinds of relationship patterns, about an addiction to failure."

    West End Girls

    Sometimes you're better off dead
There's a gun in your hand
    It's pointing at your head
You think you're mad too unstable
Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables
In a restaurant in a West end town
Call the police there's a mad man around
    Running down underground
To a dive bar in a West end town

In a West end town a dead end world
The East end boys and West end girls
In a West end town in a dead end world
The East end boys and West end girls
    West end girls

    Too many shadows whispering voices
Faces on posters too many choices
If when why what how much have you got
Have you got it do you get it
    If so how often
    Which do you choose
    A hard or soft option

In a West end town a dead end world
Meet East end boys and West end girls
In a West end town in a dead end world
The East end boys and West end girls
    West end girls

In a West end town a dead end world
Meet East end boys and West end girls
Ooh a West end town in a dead end world
East end boys and West end girls
    West end girls

I've said it all before, I'll say it all again
    We're all modern men
We've got no future, we've got no past
    Here today, built to last
In every city, in every nation
From Lake Geneva to the Finland station

And a West end town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
Ooh West End town, a dead end world
East End boys, West End Girls
    West End girls

You got a heart of glass or a heart of stone
Just you wait till I get you home
All your stopping, stalling and starning
Who do you think you are, Joe Stalin
    Sometimes you're better off dead
    There's gun in your hand
And it's pointing at your head

In a West end town a dead end world
The East end boys and West end girls
In a West end town in a dead end world
East end boys and West end girls
    West end girls

    West end girls

    West End Girls
  • Tennant said in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, "We arrived in the studio and Bobby O had programmed Michael Jackson's Billie Jean drum pattern. Chris started to play along and I started playing chords. In terms of the lyrics, the inspiration for West End Girls came from The Message by Grandmaster Flash. I remember once staying at my cousin's house in Nottingham and we were watching some kind of gangster film with James Cagney, and just as I was dropping off to sleep, the lines 'sometimes you're better off dead, there's a gun in your hand and it's pointing to your head' came into my head and I thought 'that's quite good' so I went off to find a pen."
  • Another influence was TS Eliot's poem The Wasteland. Said Tennant: "What I like about it is, it's the different voices, almost a sort of collage. All the different voices and languages coming in and I've always found that very powerful. So on West End Girls it's different voices. The line 'Just you wait till I get you home' is a direct quotation."
  • Recorded in one take, this originally missed the UK Top 40 in 1984, though it made #1 in Belgium. The song was re-recorded with producer Stephen Hague. As Stephen explained, "I heard the Bobby O version and thought it had potential. I felt it should be slowed down and the story told a little clearer. Neil and Chris agreed once they'd heard it." The above 2 quotes are also from 1000 UK #1 Hits.
  • This won the 1987 BRIT Award for Best Single. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for all above)

    Irene
  • This song was inspired by Hurricane Irene which battered Oldfield's home in the Bahamas in 2011. Safe behind his hurricane shutters, he sat up all night watching it on the Internet. "What's fascinating is that while what's happening on the ground is wild, if you watch what the satellites show you from space then it's just beautiful," he told The Daily Telegraph. "This spiraling, slowly rolling, swirling thing."

    Fever Lyrics

Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a Fever that's so hard to bear
You give me fever when you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
    Fever in the mornin'
A fever all through the night

Sun lights up the day time
    Moon lights up the night
I light up when you call my name
And you know I'm gonna treat you right
You give me fever when you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
    Fever in the mornin'
A fever all through the night

    Everybody's got the fever
That is somethin' you all know
Fever isn't such a new thing
    Fever started long time ago

    Romeo loved Juliet
    Juliet she felt the same
When he put his arms around her
He said, "Julie baby you're my flame"
Thou giveth fever, when we kisseth
    Fever with thy flaming youth
    Fever I'm on fire
    Fever yea I burn forsooth

    Captain Smith and Pocahontas
    Had a very mad affair
When her daddy tried to kill him
She said "daddy oh don't you dare"
"He givess me fever with his kisses"
"Fever when he holds me tight"
    "Fever, I'm his misses"
"Daddy won't you treat him right?"

Now you've listened to my story
Here's the point that I have made
Chicks were born to give you fever
    Be it Fahrenheit or centigrade
They give you fever when you kiss them
Fever if you live and learn
    Fever till you sizzle
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn
What a lovely way to burn

    Fever
  • This tale of passionate love was originally recorded by a singer named Little Willie John. In 1937, he was born William Edgar John in Arkansas. He was one of the first R&B singers, fairly popular in the late '50s and early '60s. Although he was a major influence on Soul singers of the '60s, he remains relatively unknown today. His nickname came from his slight height - he was only 5'4". After stabbing a man to death, he was jailed for manslaughter and died in prison when he was only 30 years old. The cause of his death is disputed - with reasons given ranging from a heart attack, pneumonia, asphyxiation, or as the result of beatings received in prison. His songs have been covered by many artists - The Beatles recorded "Leave My Kitten Alone" for the Beatles for Sale sessions, but never released it (It did appear on their Anthology 1 cd-set). Little Willie John was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
  • There is some controversy over who wrote this, but according to Otis Blackwell, he wrote it with Eddie Cooley. Otis Blackwell was a singer/songwriter/pianist, but most well-known for his songwriting. Some famous songs he wrote/co-wrote are "Don't Be Cruel," "Great Balls of Fire," and "All Shook Up." Cooley was a songwriting partner on many of his songs, and accordingto Blackwell, they had an agreement that Cooley would split his weekly paycheck as a jeweler with him. They would pen songs together and Blackwell would go to New York City to "hustle" them.
  • Blackwell had this credited to the name John Davenport (his stepfather) because he was under contract at RCA and was concerned he wouldn't get royalties for it.
  • Blackwell said in an interview that Little Willie John didn't want to record this at first because he didn't like the finger snapping.
  • Peggy Lee recorded the most famous version of this song. She was born Norma Deloris Egstrom on May 26, 1920 in Jamestown, North Dakota. Her break came when she was discovered by bandleader Benny Goodman. Lee was a Blues-influenced Jazz singer and also a songwriter, with such hits as the songs from Disney's Lady and the Tramp, in which she also sang and voiced a few characters. A triple-threat of her day, she was also an actress with a role in a remake of The Jazz Singer and was nominated for an Oscar for her role as an alcoholic Blues singer in Pete Kelly's Blues.
  • Many artists, both male and female, have recorded this. Notable covers include Elvis, Tom Jones and Madonna. (thanks, Crystal - Springfield, MO, for all above)
  • The trade charts were so distorted in the 1950s that even though Willie John's original version, (which made #24 in the US) trailed Peggy Lee's, it outsold hers by 2 to 1. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)

    Glass Lyrics

    Glass
  • This song is an ode to nostalgia and longing for the ease of youth. Mø told The Guardian: "I think everyone grew up thinking that by their mid-20s they'd have everything sorted out, but I know I don't. There is this unidentifiable problem of wanting more from life and never being satisfied. The days are slipping away and you're one step closer to death. Life was so easy as a child, maybe you fall over and you cry but you get back up again."
