Word Up! Lyrics

W-o-r-d we're coming up
K-k-k-k-keep it keep it coming up
So do your dance do your dance do your dance quick, mama
Come on, baby tell me what's the word
OW!
Woo!
Ah-hey!
Word Up!
C'mon, c'mon! Woo!

Yo pretty ladies around the world
Got a weird thing to show you
So tell all the boys and girls
Tell your brother, your sister and your mama, too
'Cause we're about to throw down
And you know just what to do

Wave your hands in the air
Like you don't care
Glide by the people
As they start to look and stare
Do your dance
Do your dance
Do your dance quick, mama
Come on, baby tell me what's the word

Word up
Everybody say
When you hear the call
You've got to get it underway
Word up
It's the code word
No matter where you say it
You know that you'll be heard

All you sucker DJs
Who think you're fly
There's got to be a reason
And we know the reason why
You try to put on those airs
And act real cool (you ain't cool!)
But you've got to realize
That you're acting like fools

Give us music
We can use it
We need to dance
We don't have the time
For psychological romance
No romance
No romance
No romance for me, mama
Come on, baby
Tell me what's the word

Word up
Everybody say
When you hear the call
You've got to get it underway
Word up
It's the code word
No matter where you say it
You know that you'll be heard

W-O-R-D up
W-O-R-D up
W-O-R-D up (Everybody say)
W-O-R-D up

W-O-R-D we're coming up
Dial "L" for low
K-k-k-keep it keep it coming up
So do your dance do your dance do your dance quick, mama
Come on, baby tell me what's the word
Word up
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah
Word up
Word up
Hey, hey

Word up
Everybody say
When you hear the call
You've got to get it underway, get it underway
Word up
It's the code word
No matter where you say it
You know that you'll be heard

Word up
Everybody say
When you hear the call
You've got to get it underway
Word up
It's the code word
No matter where you say it
You know that you'll be heard, yeah

Word Up!
  • This track is a cover of Cameo's 1986 hit of the same name and was first played on Nick Grimshaw's BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show on January 21, 2014. The single was released to UK stores on March 16, 2014.
  • The song was recorded in aid of Sport Relief, a biannual UK charity event that brings together celebrities from the sport and entertainment worlds to raise money to benefit vulnerable people. "We've all seen people push themselves and do incredible things for Sport Relief, so it's a dream come true to be releasing the official single this year," said Little Mix's Perrie.
  • Here's a list of the previous Sport Relief singles with their UK chart placings:

2002 "Your Song" by Elton John with opera singer Alessandro Safina (#4).
2004 "Some Girls" by Rachel Stevens (#2).
    2006 "Don't Stop Me Now"/"Please, Please" by McFly (#1).
2008 "Footprints In The Sand" by Leona Lewis (#2).
2010 "Morning Sun" by Robbie Williams (#45).
    2012 "Proud" by JLS (#6).
  • The song's music video finds Little Mix exercising with a number of famous faces, including Spice Girls star Mel "Sporty Spice" C, TV personality and choreographer Louis Spence, comic actor Chris Barrie (Red Dwarf, The Brittas Empire) and Olympic gymnast Louis Smith.

Mel C's appearance on set was a surprise for the foursome. "We didn't even know she was going to be there. Literally, we were filming and then she come running out," Little Mix's Jesi told MTV News. "It was so weird though, I was thinking, God, I was such a massive fan."

    Little Too Late Lyrics

I hear you had a good offer down on Third Avenue
You tell me that was the reason
For whatcha' put me through, yeah
And now you come collapsin' back
I feel the heat of your attack
Want me to take you back
    I'm givin' you the sack
    So don't waste your time

    [Chorus:]
    It's a little too little
    It's a Little Too Late
    I'm a little too hurt
And there's nothin' left that I've gotta say
You can cry to me baby
But there's only so much I can take
Ah, it's a little too little
    It's a little too late

You say you had a good time
But did ya' think it was for free - yeah
And how much did it get ya', all their flattery
And now you come back, runnin' for protection
You've been bitten by love and stung by rejection
    You can't connect
    What did you expect?
    I'm still gettin' over you

    [Chorus x4]

    Little Too Late
  • This was written by Alex Call, a songwriter and musician who was lead singer in the group Clover (Huey Lewis was also in the group). Says Call, "I wrote that around the same time I wrote '(867-5309).' I was really angry at a guy who had been playing lead guitar with me who had split to go play with somebody else, so that's what the song is about. It wasn't actually a boy-girl thing, it was more like a bandleader-lead guitarist thing - 'You want to come back and play with me, I don't think so, Bud.'"
  • Call: "From a production standpoint, it was kind of funny. There used to be these vinyl LPs called Drum Drops. Drum Drops were just drum tracks recorded by some drummer in a studio. They're like 3 1/2 minute long things. There'd be a fill every 8 bars and a little something every 4 bars. I was going through and went, 'Oh, I kind of like this,' and started playing around. We had the very first drum machines, which were these little cocktail things, they looked like a little suitcase. They had 'Rock 1,' 'Rock 2,' 'Conga,' 'Jazz' and 'Waltz.' One output, a mono output. I used that a lot, I ran it through a little spring reverb, but we're talking about the early days of multitrack home recording. I had a big 15 inch reel 4-track as my recording thing. The way you multitrack on that, you have to flip these sync switches, so when you actually overdub, you're hearing it off the first head, so it was really murky-sounding, like you're playing underwater. When you get done recording, you flip the sync switches back and all of the sudden it sounds great, it sounds clear again. What you do then is, you record 3 tracks of stuff and pong it down to one. Then you record 2 tracks, and pong it down to another 2, so by continuing to pong tracks around, you could record 16 or 24 tracks of stuff, but with each generation, the sound got smaller and smaller. That's how it was done back then, the spring reverbs, the old cocktail drum machines. The drum drops were much better than the drum machines. I only used them on that one song, for everything else, I used 'Rock 1' on my old drum machine."
  • Like "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," this became one of Benatar's most recognizable songs, and is often considered a female-empowerment anthem. Both songs, however, were written by men under interesting circumstances. Says Call, "Somebody said, it's not necessarily the truth, it's somebody's truth. For a song to connect, it has to have some reality to it, but it may be the reality's slightly skewed from what people think." (Check out our interview with Alex Call.)
  • Benatar said of this song: "That was Alex Call. I just liked the song. Some outside songs we rip to pieces. That song is not far from what he originally wrote."

    Mafia Music III Lyrics

My corner so polluted, young niggas looting
I studied Kenneth Williams, I'm one hell of a student
Remarkable hustle, my niggas coming home
I kept the candle lit, my nigga never rowed
Niggas caught him slipping, gave him a shit bag
Five shots to the stomach, 2Pac gift pack
    It's death row, conspiracy theories
Concealed indictments handed to the grand jury
Get some money now, you hated by your own kind
The home invasion done by niggas in your bloodline
GABOS, game ain’t based on sympathy
So he put a hit on his cousin at 18
A sweet potato pie, oh me, oh my
Showing no remorse watching the others cry
    Heroin sales, detectives'll sell
A lot of yellow tape, where that Obama care?
This the mob, bitch, silk underwear
    Yeezy concerts, Kim Instagrams
Niggas hating, though they studied my moves
I'm like Farrakhan, in view of hundreds of Jews
Two attempts on my life, they threatened venues
Can't you see what I am? The hustle continue
I bought more jewels, I ordered the Wraith
I got a new style of shoes, match the watch in the face
Bill Belichick, coaching and calling the shots
Throw a yellow flag, pussy nigga body drops
Then we celebrate, black bottles pop
Time to elevate, we re-open shop
Wale a genius, Meek Mill a superstar
My new crib in Phoenix, ten car garage
    Petite felite, platinum Audemars
Ain't no tags needed, nigga, I own them cars
I know them bitches, we met them broads
Never loved one, fucked them all
I'm a fucking dog, Ricky fucking Ross
Nigga Birkin bags just for my runner-ups
But my main bitch she get the main dish
Not the old range, that was a lame bitch
Brazilian weave, she say I came quick
I let her see a hundred ki's, a different St. Nick
Moving bricks like it's Black Friday
She gotta fuck me or call me a fat crybaby
Looking over my shoulder, I can't trust a soul
Bought a spot in Anguilla just for me and my ho
Glock .40, even when I shower
Chrome .22 in my swimming towel
Mob ties and I pray the music set me free
May the powers that be, nigga let me be

We around when the sun goes down
And the real, real killers they mourn for ya
    It's gonna be a bloodshed
One month, one day it's gonna be a bloodshed
    Bop, gunshot in the head
    Payback is a motherfucker
Yes, I feel it when I squeeze the trigger
I feel the air when my enemies die
I feel the strength of ten killas
What is to be, will be
Only God on earth can kill me
    'Cause these fucking streets filthy
    And I ain't fucking guilty

Gangsta no take no chance, from no guy
Know why? Violate a gangsta and bullets fly
    Boy die
Guns go off ah suh me say
    Murderings in anyway
Gangsta no take no chance, from no guy
Know why? Violate a gangsta and bullets fly
    Boy die
Guns go off ah suh we say
    Murderings in anyway

You better not be around, when the sun goes down
And the real real killas, them hunt for you
Ay, it's gonna be a bloodshed
One bust, one dead, it's gonna be a bloodshed
    Gun shot in a head

Sizzla Kalonji have de girls dem screaming
    Entire country every sweet gyal
Ya already know the meaning but its streaming
Go and clean, ya cant diss me ya must be dreaming

    Mafia Music III
  • This Mastermind track finds Ross filled with paranoia. "Looking over my shoulder," he starts, "I can't trust a soul," before later revealing there are guns hidden under his bath towels. "Where I come from," the Miami MC revealed to Billboard magazine, "it's nothing to glorify. I come from Carol City. The city renamed it Miami Gardens. The streets renamed it 'Murder Gardens.'"

'It's something that I've witnessed my whole life," Ross added." I could never accept being murdered. I feel like I would have lost in the game of chess."
  • This is the third installment of Ross' "Mafia Music" series. "Mafia Music" was a track on 2009's Deeper Than Rap and "Mafia Music II" was recorded and intended to be released on Teflon Don back in 2010, but did not make the final album cut.
  • The track features the Jamaican Dancehall artists Mavado and Sizzla.
  • The song was produced by B!nk, who is noted for his work with Roc-A-Fella Records artists, including three tracks on Jay-Z's album, The Blueprint. He also made the Deeper Than Rap bonus cut "Cigar Music."

    Then The Morning Comes Lyrics

Paint the town take a bow
Thank every body you're gonna do it again
You are the few the proud
You are the antibody mind soul and Zen

    And the world's a stage
And the world's a faze and the end is near
So push rewind just in time
Thank anybody you're gonna do it again

    [Chorus]
    The way that you walk
It's just the way that you talk like it ain't no thing
And every single day is just a fling
    Then The Morning Comes

Take your knocks shake them off
Duck everybody you're gonna take them again
You are your foe, your friend
    You are the paparazzi

    You are the tragedian
    And the world's a craze
And the world's a faze and the end is near
So push rewind just in time

Thank anybody you're gonna do it again

    [Chorus]

And when it comes it moves so slow
Kind of like it's saying "I told you so"
    Looking back before she goes
    Tomorrow's gonna hurt

    And the world's a stage
And the world's a faze and the end is near
So push rewind just in time
    Thank anybody

    Then The Morning Comes
  • Guitarist and lead songwriter Greg Camp wrote this. Says Camp: "If you've ever been on a tour bus, you've seen what happens - it's crazy. You drink and do stupid things and you wake up the next day and go, 'What was I thinking?' Of course I was doing that long before we started going on the road, and I'm sure I'll be doing it long afterward."
  • Camp: "'Then The Morning Comes' was written in my little garage studio at my old house just after we got back from the first tour. It's basically about being on the road and how every day is like Groundhog Day - partying with friends and fans after the show, waking up feeling terrible and tired, then doing it all over again. The line that says 'Push Rewind' refers to how it's like starting the same tape over as soon as it's finished. You get caught up in the moment with everybody after the show, knowing you'll be hurtin' the next day - but you get up and do it again anyway. We did it for years and years. We still do. I can't believe we've survived it. Steve once said in an interview that I wrote it about him, but it's more about all four of us during that first tour." (thanks, Amy - Chicago, IL, for above 2)

    The Universal Lyrics

There's such a lot of good ways to be bad
And so many bad ways to be good, haven't paid my rent yet
I tell them "sorry but I haven't got the money anymore"

Just for today I thought I'd leave home alone, hold hands with day
And if I'm so bad, why don't they take me away?

Just like what you hear with a shell pressed to your ear
That's the sea in the trees in the morning
    Hello, The Universal
Good morning Steve, well you won't believe me today

Working doesn't seem to be the perfect thing for me so I'll continue to play
And if I'm so bad why don't they take me away?

Well, a hippy-trippy name-dropper came through my door
He said "I just bumped into Mick he told me you know where to score?"
No, not me friend, I mind my own and my own minds me

Well, my love is at the foot of your hand, come what may
But if June comes first please won't you take me away?

    The Universal
  • This was partly tape recorded by Marriott in the garden of his Essex home at the time, Beehive Cottage. The song was further enhanced and other instruments added later in the recording studio. Drummer Kenney Jones recalled to Uncut magazine: "He brought it into the studio, we overdubbed drums and stuff onto it... And that was basically it."
  • Keyboardist Ian McLagan wasn't happy. "I'm not even on this," he told Uncut. "The drums and bass are so clear on at that they've obviously just been stuck on top of Steve's cassette recording."

He added; "I quit around this time. Steve started telling me what to play will stop as soon as I left he phoned Nicky Hopkins and got him to play on some tracks. I came back but it hurt me."
  • This was the final official song released by Small Faces before they disbanded in 1969. It's chart position of #16 on the UK was a disappointment following three consecutive Top Ten hits. McLagan told Mojo magazine: "When it flopped he (Marriott) told the press he felt he was dragging the group down. I'm not sure he meant that. I thought he was moving away from us the whole time."
  • Marriott's dogs can clearly be heard barking in the background. One of the singer's pooches, Seamus, was also recorded howling in the studio for the Pink Floyd track titled after him from their 1971 album Meddle. (The band's guitarist Dave Gilmour was looking after Seamus at the time).

    Feeling This Lyrics

    (Get ready for action!)
I got to regret right now (I'm Feeling This)
The air is so cold and null (I'm feeling this)
Let me go in her room (I'm feeling this)
I love all the things you do (I'm feeling this)
Show me the way to bed (I'm feeling this)
Show me the way you move (I'm feeling this)
Fucking it it's such a blur (I'm feeling this)
I love all the things you do (I'm feeling this)

    [Chorus]
    Fate fell short this time
Your smile fades in the summer
    Place your hand in mine
    I'll leave when I wanna

Where do we go from here
Turn all the lights down now
Smiling from ear to ear (I'm feeling this)
Our breathing has got too loud (I'm feeling this)
Show me the bedroom floor (I'm feeling this)
Show me the bathroom mirror (I'm feeling this)
We're taking this way too slow (I'm feeling this)
Take me away from here (I'm feeling this)

    [Chorus x2]

This place was never the same again
    After you came and went
How can you say you meant anything different
    To anyone standing alone
On the street with a cigarette
On the first night we met

    Look to the past
    And remember her smile
    And maybe tonight
    I can breathe for awhile
    I'm not in the seat
    I think I'm fallin' asleep
But then all that it means is
I'll always be dreaming of you

    [Chorus: x5]

(Are we alone? Do you feel it?
    So lost and disillusioned)

    Feeling This
  • This is a song about sex. Bassist Mark Hoppus and guitarist Tom DeLonge had an idea to go into two separate rooms and write, and an hour later come out with what they had. When they left each room, they discovered that they had both written about sex. Tom had written the verses about the physical aura ("I wanna take off her clothes"), while Mark wrote about the chorus and bridge about the passionate side ("Place your hand in mine"). Runaway Daydreamer Lyrics

I could tie up the bed sheets and slide down the house
Be gone before the morning comes
I could dye my hair, I could change my name
Leave it all behind, be free to run

When I close my eyes I'm on the other side
I'm like a hurricane along the track
I see the landscape's wild from here inside my mind
Beyond the walls which always hold me back

    It's just my imagination
    Running away
Girls gotta have a little daydream
    It's a secret escape

    It's just my imagination
    Running away
    Don't worry baby
    I'm here to stay

The noise of the city and the neon sky
It will fade with the falling down
And the quiet gets too close to me
So won't you come and bring me around?

Little slice of paradise in the back of my eyes
I don't need it to be true
‘Cause we all seek shelter from the darker days
And I know you go there too

Pinch me to wake me, Runaway Daydreamer

    It's just my imagination
    Running away
Girls gotta have a little daydream
    It's a secret escape

    It's just my imagination
    Running away
    Don't worry baby
    I'm here to stay

    Runaway, runaway
    Runaway, runaway

  • The second single from Wanderlust is a fleeting fantasy of running away from everyday life and seeing what else the world holds. It was released on March 31, 2014.
  • The upbeat track's string-laden chorus features violin by Gita Langley. An honors student at The Royal Academy of Music in London, Langley recorded violin on UK hit singles by The Streets' ("Dry Your Eyes") and Mutya ("Real Girl"). Gita's sisters Amy and Rosie also contributed strings on Wanderlust.
  • This is Ellis-Bextor's 10th music video directed by Sophie Muller (the first was "Take Me Home"). Like the clip for "Young Blood," the singer is clad in a striped dress and sings around a pier and in a posh living room.

    Can I go with you?

    I really love you, Billy
    And all this time
I thought you loved me, Billy
    And you were mine

    I''m gonna miss you, Billy
    And though I''m trying
    I''m hurting so bad, Billy
    I can''t help crying

    You are my whole, babe
My heart and my soul, babe
I''d have nothing to show, babe
    If you should go away

    You are my whole, babe
My heart and my soul, babe.
I''d have nothing to show, babe
    If you should go

    Which way you going, Billy?
    Or need I ask?
Cause you don''t want me, Billy
    You''re free at last

    I won''t forget you, Billy
    For all my life
    I''ll always love you, Billy
    I''ll stay your wife

    You are my whole, babe
My heart and my soul, babe
I''d have nothing to show, babe
    If you should go away

    You are my whole, babe
My heart and my soul, babe
I''d have nothing to show, babe
    If you should go

    You are my whole, babe
My heart and my soul, babe
I''d have nothing to show, babe
    If you should go

    I won''t forget you, Billy...

    Which Way You Goin' Billy?
  • The Poppy Family were the Canadian duo of Terry and Susan Jacks, who were husband and wife at the time. Terry Jacks, who four years later would release the ubiquitous "Seasons in the Sun," wrote the song whilst Susan sang lead.

Terry was a big Buddy Holly fan, and started writing the song in his pre-Poppy days with the working title "Which Way You Goin' Buddy?" He had the melody, but couldn't come up with a lyrical theme. A few years later, after he formed The Poppy Family, he hit on the idea. In our interview with Terry Jacks , he explained: "It was in 1969 and I had been reading about all these guys going to Vietnam and leaving their women behind in Seattle, and I knew somebody down there that was doing that. I thought, 'Wow, that must be awful.' These guys go and their wives or girlfriends wouldn't know whether they were coming back. That's quite a deal, going to war over there, and it was such a stupid war. So I said, 'That's what I'm going to write about: this woman that's left behind. Which way you going, Billy? Can I go, too?'"
  • Terry Jacks decided to name the lead character in this song "Billy" after hearing a song "Billy, Billy Went A Walkin'" by one of his favorite acts, a Montreal group called The Beau Marks. Jacks thought the name was a good fit. He told us: "I used the name Billy, because you've got to use a name that isn't going to stick out like a sore thumb. You can't do, 'Which way you goin', Lawrence.' Lots of people are called Billy, and it's a name that doesn't rub you wrong or anything."
  • Romantic couples who make music together rarely stay romantic for long, especially when the producer husband tries to coax a better vocal out of the singer wife. When Susan did her vocal for this song, Terry thought it was perfect... too perfect. The couple, who were married from 1967-1973, argued over whether or not she should redo her vocal, and Terry convinced her to give it another try. "The next day we went in and she did it first take," he said. "She was so tired and she was so worn out, she captured the feel. It fit the song. The other performance was too happy."
  • This was the first song The Poppy Family released outside of Canada. In 1968, they had minor hits in Canada with "Beyond The Clouds" and "What Can The Matter Be." This led to a deal with London Records, which released the song internationally. It went to #1 in Canada and was also the group's biggest hit in both the US and UK.
  • This won the 1970 Juno award (Canada's version of the Grammys) for Best Produced Single.

    Pushit Lyrics

I will choke until I swallow
Choke this infant here before me.
What is this but my reflection?
Who am I to judge and strike you down?
    But you're
    Pushing and shoving me.
You still love me and you Pushit on me.
Rest your trigger on my finger,
Bang my head upon the fault line.
Take care not to make me enter.
Cause if I do we both may disappear.
    But you're pushing me,
    Shoving me. Pushit on me.
Slipping back into the gap again.
I'm alive when you're touching me,
Alive when you're shoving me down.
    But I'd trade it all
For just a little bit of
    Piece of mind.
Put me somewhere I don't wanna be.
Seeing someplace I don't wanna see.
Never wanna see that place again.
    Saw that gap again today
As you were begging me to stay.
    Managed to push myself away,
    And you, as well.
If, when I say I may fade like a sigh if I stay,
    You minimize my movement anyway,
I must persuade you another way.
    There's no love in fear.
    Staring down the hole again.
    Hands upon my back again.
    Survival is my only friend.
    Terrified of what may come.
Just remember I will always love you,
Even as I tear your fucking throat away.
But it will end no other way.

  • This song talks about his experiences with being abused as a child and how his parents claimed to love him yet abused him. Hence the last phrase in the song, "Remember I will always love you, as I claw your f--king throat away. It will end no other way, it will end no other way." In the first verse he says, "Choke this infant here before me" - here he is referring to himself as the infant and suffering from neglect and abuse. Throughout the song, he describes how he would like to take revenge on his parents and strike back, but was afraid for fear of continued abuse. This song is one of Tool's most violent stories of Maynard's childhood. (thanks, Alex - Salina, KS)

    Inertiatic ESP Lyrics

    Now I'm lost

    Last night I heard lepers
    Flinch like birth defects
It's musk was fecal in origin
As the words dribbled off of its chin

    It said I'm lost
    I'm lost
    Now I'm lost

Dolls wreck the minced meat of pupils
    Cast in oblong arms length
The hooks have been picking their scabs
Where wolves hide in the company of men

    It said
    I'm lost
    I'm lost
    Now I'm lost

Are you peaking in the red
    Perforated at the neck
    What of this mongrel architect
A broken arm of sewers set
    Past present and future tense
    Clipside of the pinkeye fountain

    Now I'm lost

    It's been said
    Long time ago
You'll be the first and last to know
    You'll never know

  • The album details the last days of a Los Angeles graffiti artist that guitarist Omar A. Rodriguez Lopez and lead singer Cedric Bixler were friends with. He is known over the course of this album as Cerpin Taxt. In this track, Cerpin Taxt, who was a suicidal drug addict, injects rat poison and falls into a coma. Later tracks depict the visions Cerpin Taxt would have seen while in the coma.
  • The version of this song on the single has "Son Et Lumiere," the track that precedes it on Deloused In The Comatorium, attached as part of the song. It was only cut for the album because the band were forced to, to present this song as single material. (thanks, rudi - melbourne, Australia, for above 2)
  • Unlike most songs in contemporary music, this is one of the very few which uses triple meter. This is a beat most known to be used in the waltz (ONE, two, three, ONE, two three). (thanks, james - lakewood, CO)

You Should Be So Lucky Lyrics

    You Should Be So Lucky
  • This is the title track of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist and acclaimed sideman Benmont Tench 's first solo album. "I thought it was a good phrase," he told American Songwriter magazine. "I thought it was relevant to the course of my life. There have been ups and downs. So it's kind of ironic, sardonic, as far as bits of my life that have been less pleasant, but most of my life has been great."

"Also, it sounds like you're being cocky when you say, 'You Should Be So Lucky," he added, "and also flowery and grateful."
  • Tench described the title track to American Songwriter as "a pretty mean song." He added: "It's basically a murder ballad. It's one of those songs where the guy feels 'whatever' for whatever reason. He's angry at the girl and he's taking her down by the river. In murder ballads, you take the girl down by the river. She's not coming back. I thought all of those things would be interesting to play with."

"Basically, I thought that it sounded like a cool-sounding phrase," Tench continued. "I like the song a lot. It's one of the newest things on the record. I wrote it about a month before we cut it."
