Daughters Lyrics

Daughters
  • This fantasy of "pretty children sharpening their blades," finds Wild Beasts plotting a violent uprising against the selfish old guard. The band's Tom Fleming told NME: "It's a response to the world we're leaving to our children, with people in part consolidating positions. I have this fantasy about them destroying their parents."
  • The violent rebellion imagines Jesus Christ as a vengeful female: "I always thought that story made a lot more sense with a woman cast in that role, the bottom of the pile," Fleming told NME. "She's treated terribly, and then this woman takes revenge."
  • Vocalist Hayden Thorpe explained to DIY magazine that the song is, "about how callous we can be." He added: "And it then asks questions about our future. I see the song as apocalyptic in a sense. It's very much tapping into the anxiety of the now; that sense of unknowing and a sense of doom. We know enough today to be aware of where we're heading - it's the beginning of the end, if that sounds awful."

"Our current way of being is unstable," Thorpe continued. "The lyrics 'all the pretty children sharpening their blades' is incredibly sinister in that sense."

    Here Is No Why Lyrics

The useless drag of another day
The endless drags of a death rock boy
    Mascara sure and lipstick lost
Glitter burned by restless thoughts of being forgotten
    And in your sad machines
    You'll forever stay
Desperate and displeased with whoever you are
    And you're a star
Somewhere he pulls his hair down over a frowning smile
A hidden diamond you cannot find
A secret star that cannot shine over to you
May the king of gloom, be forever doomed
    And in your sad machines
    You'll forever stay
    Burning up in speed
Lost inside the dreams, of teen machines
The useless drags, the empty days
The lonely towers of long mistakes
To forgotten faces and faded loves
    Sitting still was never enough
And if you're giving in, then you're giving up
    'Cause in your sad machines
    You'll forever stay
    Burning up in speed
Lost inside the dreams, of teen machines

    Here Is No Why
  • This is about fame and stardom at a young age, and how it is hard to comprehend that you are becoming popular and famous. The lyrics describe the emotions of a young rock star, "And in your sad machines, you'll forever stay, desperate and displeased, with whoever you are, you're a star." Billy Corgan probably felt this way with his rise in fame and being a well-known rock idol. (thanks, Justin - Blaine, WA)

I Wish I Could Break Your Heart Lyrics

I Wish I Could Break Your Heart
I wish I could bring you down
Just for a second, teach you a lesson about being alone in the dark
I wish I could make you cry
So hard you can barely breath
And maybe you just might know what it feels like
    Oh to be me

Well the truth is that I never ever wanna hurt you baby
But it’d be nice to know that I could
Be strong enough to pull you under, throw you back a little under thunder
    Even though I never would
I wish I could break, I wish I could break your heart

I wish I could crush your dreams
I wish I could turn back time
Boy I’d lead you on light the fuse, drop the bomb
Just so I’d be the first to leave

Well the truth is that I never ever wanna hurt you baby
But it’d be nice to know that I could
Be strong enough to pull you under, throw you back a little under thunder
    Even though I never would
I wish I could break, I wish I could break your heart

I wish I could break your heart
I wish I could make you cry
I wish I could turn back time

Well the truth is that I never ever wanna hurt you baby
But it’d be nice to know that I could

I Wish I Could Break Your Heart
  • This song was written by Gordie Sampson, Ashley Monroe and Jon Green. Speaking to Radio.com , Pope explained why she first gravitated to the tune. "It's a positive song but its kind of got this snarky, interesting negative side," she said. "It's not make or break. It's not a heartbroken song where the world's going to end but it's a song about loving somebody. It's a great relationship; you're happy but you know that they could break you so easily and you feel so vulnerable. And you feel too weak compared to them and you wish if you could see if you could break them if they would fall apart. If they would fall to pieces. I think that's a really cool and honest lyric. It's an outside song and I just love what it says."
  • Pope commented that the track is very similar to Faith Hill's 2002 hit, "Cry." "You just wish that that other person would feel a little more and you wish that you could almost make them cry, just to know that you have that power over them," she explained. "But, it's overall a very happy song. I love the silly, playful undertone that that song has."
  • The song's music video was directed by Wes Edwards, whose previous credits include Jason Aldean's "Night Train," Brooks & Dunn's "Put a Girl In It" and Dierks Bentley's "5-1-5-0."
  • Cassadee Pope hit an impressive nine-second long high note around the three-minute mark of her debut Country single, "Wasting All These Tears." She repeats the trick on this song, hitting a big note just after the two-minute mark. "I really just love belting," Pope told Billboard magazine. "I look up to artists like Martina McBride and Kelly Clarkson. They leave it all out there on their recordings and onstage. I don't know if it's a signature thing, but I really like to do it a lot."
  • The three songwriters had no one in mind when they wrote the song in Sampson's writing room, The Shack. They were just looking to create a quality tune, by fusing the influences of three different countries they came from. "I brought Tennessee, Jon brought British, Gordie brought Canadian — he's from Nova Scotia," Ashley Monroe told Billboard magazine.

Monroe added that she also brought the title, "I Wish I Could Break Your Heart." "I always like to go in with some sort of idea, especially when I'm with people I'm big fans of," she said. "So I was like, 'I don't know, guys. I feel like this needs to be written. I've had this title for a little while.' I forget which one started chugging and making it."

"I recall Gordie and I immediately latching onto it and [the words were] singing great over the guitar lines we were jamming," Jon Green added. "I really liked starting with the hook line, too. Straight out the gate we have a story and an angle."

    The Everlasting Gaze Lyrics

    You know I'm not dead
You know I'm you know I'm not dead
    You know I'm not dead
    You know I'm not dead

Now you know where I've been
As you sleep shine I am
    Waiting down patiently
    Born of love

You know I'm you know I'm not dead
I'm just living in my head
Forever waiting on the ways of your desire
    You always find your way

And through it all into us all you move
    Forgotten touch, forbidden thought
    We can never, ever know

    You know I'm not dead
You know I'm, you know I'm not dead
    You know I'm not dead
    You know I'm not dead

    Down below the creatures scream
    Strangehold of God's machines
    Begging to tear us out
    Torn is hope

You know I'm, you know I'm not dead
I'm just the tears inside your head
Forever waiting on the ways of your desire
    You always find a way

And through it all, into us all you move
    Forgotten touch, forbidden thought
    We can never, ever know
    You know I'm not dead

We all want to hold in The Everlasting Gaze
Enchanted in the rapture of his sentimental sway
But underneath the wheels lie the skulls of every cog
The fickle fascination of an everlasting God

    You know I'm not dead
I'm just living in my head

Forever waiting, forever waiting a cruel death

    You know I'm not dead
    I'm just living for myself
    Forever waiting

    You know I'm not dead
    You know I'm not dead
    You know I'm not dead

    The Everlasting Gaze
  • After their huge success in the mid-'90s, The Pumpkins weren't too active and were somewhat forgotten. In 1999-2000, with the return of drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, they decided to make one more album and hopefully have it be a great one. It was, with the success of this song and "Stand Inside Your Love." The line, "Ya know I'm not dead" meant the band was just as lively as they were in the previous years. (thanks, Justin - Blaine, WA)
  • This was the first song on the album to have a video, but it was not the first single - that was "Stand Inside Your Love."

    A Dozen Roses and a Six-Pack Lyrics

There's that flower shop on Main.
Lord it's been too long since it's seen my face.
I probably should've stopped by yesterday.
Just a few miles from our house.
There's a neon sign flashing "coldest beer in town."
Is she gone for good, well it's hard to say
But I'm going to be ready either way.

I got a dozen roses if she comes back home
One for every time I left her lonely waiting on me
Why did it take so long to see?
And this six pack might not be enough
But it's a damn good start if we're ending us.
We'll either work it out or we won't.
But I got a dozen roses if she comes back home, and a six pack if she don't.

I'm prayin' love will bring her back
Oh, just one more chance that's all I'll ever ask
I sure hope she ain't a memory yet.
But she left her book there on the bed
Would a woman leave a man like that?

I got a dozen roses if she comes back home
One for every time I left her lonely waiting on me
Why did it take so long to see?
And this six pack might not be enough
But it's a damn good start if we're ending us.
We'll either work it out or we won't.
But I got a dozen roses if she comes back home, and a six pack if she don't.

Is she gone for good, well it's hard to say.
But I'm going to be ready either way.
I got a dozen roses if she comes back home
One for every time I left her lonely waitin' on me, baby
Why'd it take so long to see?
And this six pack might not be enough
But it's a damn good start if we're ending us.
We'll either work it out or we won't.
But I got a dozen roses if she comes back home
Yeah I got this dozen roses in case she comes back home
And a six pack if she don't.
And a six pack if she don't.

  • Swindell told Taste of Country that this song tells his story, along with "The Back Roads and the Back Row."

"I grew up on '90s country, back where it was a time where it was more about the lyrics and not the cool sound of things," he said. "I remember when my parents got divorced. That Clay Walker song, 'This Woman and This Man.' Stuff like that, that as a kid made me feel something. To me, songs like 'Dozen Roses & a Six-Pack' and 'The Back Roads & the Back Row' are songs about where I come from."

Your lipstick, his collar don't bother Angel
I know exactly what goes on

    When everything you'll get is
    Everything that you've wanted, princess
    well which would you prefer
My finger on the trigger, or
(Meet face down, down across your floor)
My face down, down across your floor
(Meet face down, down across your floor)
Well just so long as this thing is loaded

And will you tell all your friends
You've got your gun to my head
This all was only wishful thinkin',
This all was only wishful thinkin'

And will you tell all your friends
You've got your gun to my head
This all was only wishful thinkin'
This all was only wishful thinkin'
    Let's go

Don't bother trying to explain Angel
I know exactly what goes on when you're on and
How about I'm outside of your window
How about I'm outside of your window
Watchin' him keep the details covered
You're such a sucker for a sweet talker, yeah

And will you tell all your friends
You've got your gun to my head
This all was only wishful thinkin'
This all was only wishful thinkin'

And will you tell all your friends
You've got your gun to my head
This all was only wishful thinkin'
This all was only wishful thinkin'

Hoping for the best just hoping nothing happens
A thousand clever lines unread on clever napkins
I will never ask if you don't ever tell me
I know you well enough to know you never loved me

Hoping for the best just hoping nothing happens
A thousand clever lines unread on clever napkins
I will never ask if you don't ever tell me
I know you well enough to know

    Why can't I feel anything
    From anyone other than you?

And all of this was all your fault
    And all of this

I stay wrecked and jealous for this,
    For this simple reason
I just need to keep you in mind
    As something larger than life

I stay wrecked and jealous for this,
For this simple reason is true
I just need to keep you in mind
    As something larger than life

I stay wrecked and jealous for this,

The times I felt you on my breath
They scraped me to the bone
The times I fell the give no rest
    And they held me down
You've been hit now, you've been sorry
You've been hit now, I'm so sorry,
    You've been hit now

And it has been a Cold Summer without you
Gotta get back all I need
And it has been a long cold summer without you
And the fear of love is fadin', yeah, yeah
All over me, all over me

The tethered lives fell down on me
    Crushed and despised from you
The future for us seems so bleak
But I'll fight for that too

You've been hit now, you've been sorry
You've been hit now, I'm so sorry,

  • This Brett Scallions penned song dates back to the early '00s, but only got recorded when producer Eddie Wohl and the band got to hear the tune. "I recorded that song probably three or four times already and had kinda lost hope in it," Scallions told Billboard magazine. "But then (Wohl) and the guys in the band heard it and said, 'Man, we gotta do that song!' 'Really?'"

"I had a full-on hangover; it had been with me so long I was very indifferent about it.," the Fuel vocalist continued. "But we actually got it right this time. I played it for my wife and a number of other people and they were all like, 'Man, that's a hit! You've got to put this song on the record!' So I guess I'm outnumbered this time."

  • If part of this song is played backwards, you can hear this: "Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont...
    -Roger! Carolyne's on the phone!
    -Okay.

Pink was the main character in Pink Floyd's film The Wall.

After this first message, the voice of engineer James Guthrie is heard over an intercom, shouting out "Roger! Carolyne's on the phone!" This is a reference to Carolyne Christie, who was Roger Waters' wife from 1976-1992.
  • In the movie, an extended version was used, whereas in the album it ends with "How can i complete the wall?" which is only the sixth line. (thanks, charlie - Thomaston, DC)
  • The version used in The Wall is called "What Shall We Do Now." This shortened version was used on the album because there wasn't enough room for the the longer track. (thanks, Sarah - Guess, Canada)
  • On the album version, the song is more than half over when the lyrics begin. The first 1:28 of the song are completely instrumental and the song is a total of 2:08. The secret message at the beginning, however, begins at around 1:12, which is also over halfway through the song. (thanks, Chris - Bradenton, FL)

    Fog on the Tyne Lyrics

    Fog on the Tyne
  • This bittersweet celebration of life on the dole in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne was written by Alan Hull, the lead singer of Tyneside folk rockers Lindisfarne. He originally performed it during his solo folk club shows.
  • When Lindisfarne learned they would be working on their second album with Bob Dylan producer Bob Johnston, they were delighted. However this rousing number was originally not intended for the record. During recording, that band played a date at the Royal Festival Hall, at which they performed "Fog." "It went down a storm at the Festival Hall," drummer Ray Laidlaw recalled to Uncut magazine, "and when we came back, Bob said, 'How come you haven't played me that?' We said, 'We don't think much of it...' It wouldn't have been on the album if it hadn't been for him."

The song not only became the title track of Lindisfarne's breakthrough album in England, it also became the band's signature tune.
  • A heavily reworked version of the song with vocals by Geordie footballer Paul Gascoigne was recorded in 1990 under the title "Fog on the Tyne (Revisited)." Released in the wake of Gazza's renown after the 1990 World Cup, it peaked at #2 in the UK singles charts.

  • The lyrics of this song are in French. A rough English translation is: "It's the most beautiful, and it's the saddest, and it's the most beautiful land in the world."
  • John Cage is one of the most famous experimental music composers in history, known for his avant garde approach to his work. He is quite possibly best known for "4'33", in which a performer sits at a piano for approximately four and a half minutes making no sounds intentionally. What "John Cage Bubblegum" is or what it has to do with this song is not clear, but Stereolab's song titles are almost always nonsensical. (thanks, Matt - pitts, PA, for above 2)
