Kiss You Tonight Lyrics

I catch myself wishing
You were whispering my name
Every star, every scar
Every mark upon my heart
Up and fades away

I feel myself missing
Everything I threw away
Every dream, every scene
Every song we'd ever sing
Got lost in yesterday

I've been trying to do without you
But I can't give up this fight
Everything will be alright
If I can Kiss You Tonight
We can make it to tomorrow
If we can find the morning light
Everything will be alright
If I can kiss you tonight

Do you find yourself wondering
If I still think about you
Every thought, every step
Every tear and every breath
I swear I do
Yeah, that's all I ever do

I've been trying to do without you
But I can't give up this fight
Everything will be alright
If I can kiss you tonight
We can make it to tomorrow
If we can find the morning light
Everything will be alright
If I can kiss you tonight
If I can kiss you tonight

I've been trying to do without you
But I can't give up this fight
Everything will be alright
If I can kiss you tonight
We can make it to tomorrow
If we can find the morning light
Everything will be alright
If I can kiss you tonight
Everything will be alright
If I can kiss you tonight
If I can kiss you tonight
If I could kiss you tonight

Kiss You Tonight
  • This song finds Nail singing about the strong emotion that we all feel at some point in our lives for a loved one. It was written by David Cook, Jay Knowles and Trent Summar.

"'Kiss You Tonight' is a song that, the first time I heard it, I knew I was going to record it," Nail said. "There was just something about it that made me remember so many songs from the past. It's the song that, there's not a specific thing that jumps out at you, but the first time you hear it, you just know, 'Hey, I want to hear that again."
  • The I'm a Fire track embraces Nail's relationship with his wife, Catherine and was released as the second single from the album. "There's so many moments on this record that make me think about the last four years that I've been married, and 'I'm A Fire' just sums it all up," he explained. "[I'm a Fire] says, 'I've walked through flames, come out on the other end, and the foremost reason is because of you.'"
  • When Nail heard the demo, he thought it was definitely something he wanted to say in a song, but the way it was produced was a bit different from how he wanted to say it.

"'Kiss You Tonight' is a song that if you went back and listened to the demo, to how we did it, it's a lot different," said Nail. "It was written by (2008 American Idol winner) David Cook, who's a big pop-rock star, and a couple of other guys, and you could kinda tell that it definitely had that influence, and so obviously we needed to kinda take it and morph it into something that was a little more me, which happened very effortlessly."
  • David Cook performed the song at the Tin Roof in Nashville in May 2013.
  • The song's music video was directed by Chris Hicky ("White Liar," "Undo It," "Kiss a Girl") and shot in Las Vegas.

    Ride On Time
  • Black Box was made up of three Italian producers: Mirko Limoni, Daniele Davoli and Valerio Semplici. They also recorded as Groove Groove Melody.
  • Was the biggest-selling single in the UK in 1989. It spent 6 weeks at #1. It is still one of the top 100 best selling singles ever in most of Europe.
  • The success of this record was marred with controversy when it was revealed that the vocals had been sampled from Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation," a disco song written and produced by Dan Hartman and released in 1980. The group had hired French model Katrin Quniol to pose as their singer. Quniol couldn't speak English and had trouble lip synching the song on music shows. It has been argued that the combination of Black Box's excellent production, Holloway's powerful voice and Quinol's good looks made the record such a success, but the controversy still tarnishes the record.
  • Although this was by far their biggest hit, Black Box didn't make much money from it as Holloway sued them. There is still no love lost between them. Black Box later claimed that Holloway was crying crocodile tears and pointed out that she got an expensive fur coat out of the compensation money they had to pay her. Holloway still maintains she was upset that the group had "stolen her voice" and to add insult to injury they pretended someone else was singing the song, and that even though she won the case she still felt that the damage had been done.
  • Other producers later sampled Holloway's vocals from "Love Sensation," including Cevin Fisher on "(You Got Me) Burning Up" and Marky Mark And The Funky Bunch on the US chart topper "Good Vibrations." Unlike Black Box, both credited Loleatta Holloway.
  • A few remixed versions have been released over the years, some with Holloway's vocals removed and replaced by a soundalike session singer, though one was released in 2003 credited as Black Box featuring Loleatta Holloway.
  • Apart from this song and two instrumentals, all the songs on Black Box's debut album Dreamland featured vocals from Martha Wash, one half of The Weather Girls. Wash was uncredited and the group still used Katrin Quniol to lip-sync the songs for the videos. Sadly for Wash, this wasn't an unusual experience for her as around the same time, her vocals were featured on C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)," again lip-synched by a model in the video.
  • Among the songs on Dreamland is a cover of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Fantasy." (thanks, Adam - Dewsbury, England, for all above)
  • Daniele Davoli (from 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh): "People were dancing to the new piano sound, even though it sounded quite different. The piano sound wasn't that big in Italy until after we had the success in England. Mirko came to the club where I was DJing. I would play the keyboard and sampler, but it was such a small sampler, I only had space for 2 or 3 lines. The main sound I created was a wah-wah-wah-wah-wah effect and incorporated into nearly every record I played. Mirko said to me, 'I couldn't help noticing that, what was it?' I said, 'It was from this acapella that I got from an old record.' Mirko said, 'Bring it in to the studio and I think we can do something with it.'" (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)

    Drunk on a Plane Lyrics

I took two weeks vacation for the honeymoon
A couple tickets all inclusive down in Cancun
I couldn't get my money back so I'm in seat 7A
I'm getting Drunk on a Plane

I bet the fella on the aisle thought I was crazy
'Cause I taped your picture to the seatback right beside me
Now I've got empty mini bottles fillin' both our trays
I'm getting drunk on a plane

    Buyin' drinks for everybody
But the pilot, it's a party
    Got this 737 rocking like a G6
    Stewardess is somethin' sexy
    Leanin' pourin' Coke and whiskey
    Told her about my condition
Got a little mile-high flight attention
It's Mardi Gras up in the clouds
I'm up so high, I may never come down
I'll try anything to drown out the pain
They all know why I'm getting drunk on a plane

We had this date marked on the calendar forever
We'd take that new wed limo airport ride together
I feel like a plastic groom alone there at the top of the cake
So hey, I'm getting drunk on a plane

    Buyin' drinks for everybody
But the pilot, it's a party
    Got this 737 rocking like a G6
    Stewardess is somethin' sexy
    Leanin' pourin' Coke and whiskey
    Told her about my condition
Got a little mile-high flight attention
It's Mardi Gras up in the clouds
I'm up so high, I may never come down
I'll try anything to drown out the pain
They all know why I'm getting drunk on a plane

On my way home I'll bump this seat right up to first class
So I can drink that cheap champagne out of a real glass
And when we land I'll call her up and tell her kiss my ass
'Cause hey, I'm drunk on a plane

    Buyin' drinks for everybody
But the pilot, it's a party
    Got this 737 rocking like a G6
    Stewardess is somethin' sexy
    Leanin' pourin' Coke and whiskey
    Told her about my condition
Got a little mile-high flight attention
It's Mardi Gras up in the clouds
I'm up so high, I may never come down
I'll try anything to drown out the pain
They all know why I'm getting drunk on a plane

I'm getting drunk on a plane
    I might be passed out
    In the baggage claim
    But right now
    I'm drunk on a plane

    Drunk on a Plane
  • Bentley penned this song with Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear. It tells the story of a guy who is left standing alone at the alter but finds the strength to forge ahead on a solo trip to Cancun. Bentley recalled: "(I)went in to write with those guys, and had an idea. Josh threw that idea out, and he said, 'I always wanted to write a song called 'Drunk on a Plane.' Of course, I'm obsessed with planes, so I'm like, 'I love that! I've got to have a song called 'Drunk on a Plane.' Just thinking about the idea of being drunk on a plane and all the crazy things that could happen or do happen."

"It was really fun writing with those guys, just kind of creating this idea of this story of this guy who had been left at the altar, and just the ups and downs and the highs and lows of being on a plane and being drunk," Bentley continued. "I knew when I wrote it, it would go over great live. Like I could just take my guitar and go and play it in front of an audience that had never heard it before and get a laugh and entertain with that song, but I didn't know if it'd make the record or not."

  • Bentley is a licensed pilot, and when he sang the song at the 2013 Country Radio Seminar in Nashville, the host asked him if he was advocating flying an aircraft while intoxicated. "No, it's more of a Southwest situation," he assured the audience.
  • The Riser album was written and recorded in the year following the death of Bentley's father. The songs chosen for the record tell the of the ups and downs the singer went through, ranging from the loss of his dad to the birth of his third child, Knox. Bentley said at a private listening party on Nashville's Music Row that some of the tracks "don't really fit in the Riser theme, but there's a similar sound that makes it work together."

He added: "A song like 'Pretty Girls' or 'Drunk On A Plane' can fit as a pressure relief valve to get away from it, then bring it back. I wanted the album to be heavier and a little darker. I think a good country album should have a little bit of it all."
  • Bentley told the story of the song to Jam! Music : "I actually fly a small single engine, I fly it back and forth to some concerts, it helps me get me some more family time which is nice ... it's fun if you're up for that kind of thing," he said. "So anything about planes I love. So it became this title Drunk on a Plane. Just being natural songwriters and making up this story about this guy. 'Why is he drunk on a plane? Well, he got stood up at a wedding. Oh my gosh.' It's just a really fun song."
  • Bentley performed the song with Sheryl Crow at the 2014 ACM Awards. Crow first heard the song soon after it was written, and she immediately loved it.
  • The song's music video was directed by Wes Edwards and conceived by Bentley, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay of the website Funny or Die. The clip, which was shot in at Air Hollywood in a warehouse full of old planes in April 2014, stars Dierks as Captain Bentley for Riser Air. The country star also plays one of the regular passengers, which also include various band members and friends recruited by Bentley including comedian Jeff Dye and actress Emma Fitzpatrick (The Collection).

The visual was one Bentley had been thinking about for a long time. "Since the day I wrote this song I've been thinking about this video," he said. "Everyone that's heard this song has been thinking about the video for it."
  • The idea for the music video was inspired by an old joke between Edwards and his friends. The director remembered in a Songfacts interview : "My friends and I used to joke around, and we used to make up bad country songs and sit around and sing them. We would try and come up with the most ridiculous scenarios possible and there was this joke song that we made up called 'Let's Land This Thing,' and it was exactly the plot of 'Drunk on a Plane.' A guy gets on a plane, he's too shy to talk to the girl, but then the plane starts going down and in the song he actually marries her on the way down. We were going to do that with "Drunk on a Plane," that's why we had the priest sitting there. He was going to perform the ceremony, but we ran out of time and it felt too complicated, so we went with let's just do it where he puts the ring on her finger and now they're engaged. I think that works just as well, but that actually came from this silly joke song that me and my friends made up probably 10 years ago. You never know where the idea is gonna come from."
  • The music clip won the Video of the Year trophy at the 2015 ACM Awards.

    One Of These Days
  • This was built around a bass riff Roger Waters played through an echo unit. They worked off that for the rest of the song.
  • At the time, Pink Floyd was intrigued by minimalist composers who were experimenting with electronic patterns. They used a pattern this type of pattern throughout the song.
  • Dave Gilmour called this "The most collaborative effort of anything we ever did." In later years, the band didn't collaborate on songs nearly as much.
  • The only vocal is the line, "One of these days I'm gonna cut you up into little pieces." It was spoken by drummer Nick Mason, and was digitally warped to give it an evil sound to it. Nick Mason said he liked how it sounded when it was all finished up.
  • Pink Floyd performed this on their video and album recorded live at Pompeii. (thanks, charlie - Thomaston, DC, for above 2)
  • When they started recording this album, they put down 24 pieces of music with no idea how it would develop. The working title was "Nothing, Parts 1-24."
  • The spoken threat is reportedly aimed at Sir Jimmy Young, the Radio 2 DJ. (thanks, Phil - Niagara Falls, Canada)
  • Dave Gilmour in Guitar World February 1993: "'One of these Days' evolved from some of my experiments with the Binson [an Italian made delay unit], as did 'Echoes' [also from Meddle]. One day, Roger decided to take some of the techniques that I was developing and try them out himself on bass. And he came up with that basic riff that we all worked on and turned into 'One of These Days.' For the middle section, another piece of technology came into play: an H&H amp with vibrato. I set the vibrato to more or less the same tempo as the delay. But the delay was in 3/4 increments of the beat and the vibrato went with the beat. I just played the bass through it and made up that little section, which we then stuck on to a bit of tape and edited in. The tape splices were then camouflaged with cymbal crashes."
  • Guitar World asked Gilmour about playing bass on "One Of These Days." Gilmour replied: "The opening section is me and Roger. On 'One of these Days,' for some reason, we decided to do a double track of the bass. You can actually hear it if you listen in stereo. The first bass is me. A bar later, Roger joins in on the other side of the stereo picture. We didn't have a spare set of strings for the spare bass guitar, so the second bass is very dull sounding. [laughs] We sent a roadie out to buy some strings, but he wandered off to see his girlfriend instead."

    Surprise Lyrics

Dark sunrise from the night on the run
I’ve gone blind from the sight of the sun
A heart full of truth ‘cause I paid my dues
A head full of noise and something to lose

    But she
Talks me down from the edge
    And she
Talks me down from the ledge

    [Chorus]
    Surprise, surprise for you
No lies, just eyes for you
Teach me all that you know
So that I will bask in your glow

A light shoots out with a beam so bright
Your angels dance for your delight
You’ve got nothing at all but you hold on tight
It’s a dangerous world but you live life right

    And she
    Is the world to me
    And she
    Is the world to me

    [Chorus]

    And she
    Is the world to me
    And she
    Is the world to me

    Yeeeeeah Woooooh

  • This was released as the second single from The Sun Comes Out Tonight. Speaking to In the Now Magazine , frontman Richard Patrick stated the song "is, like, a no-brainer." He added: "It should be a nice, successful song for us. I don't mean to get cocky, but it really is one of those songs that we wrote that, you feel like you were just watching it happen, even though you were writing the lyrics and stuff and you were playing the guitar. It's just one of those songs that just kind of…. It just kind of wrote itself."
  • When Richard Patrick spoke to us about the song, he recalled: "When I did 'Surprise' on this new record, I'm like, 'That's golden. That's the s--t. That's going to speak to people.'"

    Where The Boys Are Lyrics

    Where The Boys Are
    Someone waits for me,
A smiling face, a warm embrace,
Two arms to hold me tenderly.
    Where the boys are
    My true love will be,
He's walking down some street in town
And I know he's looking there for me.

In the crowd of a million people
    I'll find my valentine,
Then I'll climb to the highest steeple
And tell the world he's mine.

    'Til he holds me
    I wait impatiently.
    Where the boys are,
    Where the boys are,
    Where the boys are,
    Someone waits for me.

    'Til he holds me

    Where The Boys Are
  • Written by Howie Greenfield and Neil Sedaka, this was the title song from the movie of the same name starring George Hamilton.
  • Thanks to Rich Podolsky's book Don Kirshner: The Man with the Golden Ear , the full story of this song can now be told:

Producer/director Joe Pasternak came to this film from an acclaimed career, starting with an Oscar nomination for "Best Picture" for his 1936 Three Smart Girls, also a musical comedy with Deanna Durbin. But he didn't want to accept female lead Connie Francis' recommendation of Howie Greenfield and Neil Sedaka. He had a song-writing team from Brooklyn. Pasternak grumbled when Francis assured him that Sedaka and Greenfield were the ones who had written hits for her previously, so he gave them a week to produce results.

When Greenfield was told of the project, he was less than thrilled. In his phone call with Connie Francis, he said, "What kind of stupid title is that? Who can write a song with a title like 'Where The Boys Are'?"

In 1960, there was neither the Internet, nor FAX machines, nor Federal Express, so when Greenfield and Sedaka wrote the song, they had a friend who was an airline stewardess deliver it to Francis in Fort Lauderdale. They actually cut two demo versions of songs, and let Pasternak pick the one he liked better.

Producers Al Nevins and Don Kirshner, of Aldon Music, had Greenfield and Sedaka under contract to them at the time of "Where The Boys Are." Since this was the first time a song of theirs had made it into a film, Kirshner thought that they deserved a screen credit, too. So, against Nevins' better council (not wanting to jinx the gig), Kirshner boldly picked up the phone and spoke with producer Pasternak. This is why the credits at the end of the film, listing the songs, read "Words by Howard Greenfield, Music by Neil Sedaka, Courtesy Nevins-Kirshner."
  • To this day, many of our spring-break-in-Fort-Lauderdale tropes are seeded in this film. Hollywood released a series of "beach party" films following this, including Beach Party (1963), Pajama Party (1964), Beach Blanket Bingo and How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965). Where The Boys Are was released in the winter, inspiring many snow-bound college students to vacation in sunny Florida as soon as the weather warmed.

For you film geeks, some trivia: The film is actually based on a novel, by Glendon Swarthout. Pasternak wisely decided to only make the story about the first half of the novel, since the second half has the priciples decide to smuggle guns to Cuba and into the hands of Fidel Castro! This would have had bad political overtones, since Castro did indeed win his revolution by the time the film came out and US-Cuba relations immediately soured.

One more: Francis never attended the premiere of the film, stating that she just didn't like how she was cast. Even by 2001, when she attended the Provincetown International Film Festival where a new print of the film was being shown, she cracked, "I've got some nerve being at a film festival!"
  • Francis didn't like the version that Pasternak chose for the film. "I thought the first version said a lot more in the lyrics. It was a totally different song, lyrically and musically," she told DISCoveries Magazine. Unfortunately, there's no chance of a rare recording being dug up because Francis never recorded that version.

Crawling and moaning in the sharp blade of grass
All my life starting over, blood spilled inside out
I went through this cycle of pain deep in myself
Destroyed by awful hands, a demon of illusion
The pain now awaken, I'm cracking wide open
Can barely recognize my body, a battlefield
    Unquestioned pride once so fragile
I cannot even recall names or faces
    Those standing on my side

    My side
I am nothing the pain awake is forging me
    Face down, inert
    Forcing me, dreams haunting me
I am immense, I am awake, renewed
    Lost in the darkest time
I know I felt their presence
    Even if I was blind
    Pain, please forgive my ignorance

"In order to survive, we do things in difficult times when we suffer or feel lost. We understand things because it is hard. We fight to survive. 'Surviving' is a big word."

    Are you ready Steve? Uh-huh

    Mick? Okay
    Alright fellas, let's go!

Oh it's been getting so hard
Living with the things you do to me
My dreams are getting so strange
I'd like to tell you everything I see

Oh, I see a man at the back as a matter of fact
His eyes are as red as the sun
And the girl in the corner let no one ignore her
Cause she thinks she's the passionate one

Oh yeah! It was like lightning
    Everybody was fighting
    And the music was soothing
    And they all started grooving

    [Chorus]
    Yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
And the man in the back said everyone attack
And it turned into a Ballroom Blitz
And the girl in the corner said boy I want to warn you
It'll turn into a ballroom blitz
Ballroom blitz, ballroom blitz, ballroom blitz, ballroom blitz

    Oh reaching out for something
Touching nothing's all I ever do
Oh I softly call you over
When you appear there's nothing left of you

And the man in the back is ready to crack
As he raises his hands to the sky
And the girl in the corner is everyone's woman
She could kill you with a wink of her eye

    Oh yeah! It was electric
    So perfectly hectic
    And the band started leaving
    'Cause they all stopped breathing

    [Chorus]

Oh yeah! It was like lightning
    Everybody was fighting
    And the music was soothing
    And they all started grooving

    [Chorus]

    It's it's a ballroom blitz
    It's it's a ballroom blitz
    It's it's a ballroom blitz
    Yeah, it's a ballroom blitz

    Ballroom Blitz
  • This was written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, who wrote many Glam Rock hits like this one. They also wrote Sweet's "Blockbuster," Suzi Quatro's "Devil Gate Drive" and Tony Basil's "Mickey."
  • This song was inspired by an incident in 1973 when the band were performing at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland and were driven offstage by a barrage of bottles.
  • In 2000, this was used in La Vie Ne Me Fait Pas Peur, a French movie about a group of girls who don't speak English - the only words they know are "Ballroom Blitz." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for above 3)
  • Quentin Tarantino was considering using this song in the ear scene in Reservoir Dogs but went with the Stealers Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You" instead. (thanks, Johanna - London, England)
  • Cassandra's (Tia Carrere's) band covered this in the movie Wayne's World. As Wayne says, they wail. (thanks, Leah - Ottawa, Canada)

    Jerk Ribs Lyrics

And my ear drum, reminds me
His name was just way down in my feet
And this moment, well, I can't breathe
You can't control, something that's getting free
    And the rhythm's, exciting
Oh when I start this road full of streets
I'm glad you get this one for cheap

In Harlem, where I started to breathe
Your beat was like a soundtrack to me
I was the girl, my daddy was the world
He played the notes and keys
He said to look for melody in everything

It feels just like it should
I wake up, this, this is what it looks like
So don't miss this, this is what it looks like
So call on me, it feels just like it should
    So call on me

The best favorites, go through me
I press the strings, I love everything
Hurtful pain, forget the time and keep staying
Hold the doors, dance and give it away
Just around me, I hear it
And melody was right over me
    But whistleblowers happened for me

It feels just like it should
I wake up, this, this is what it looks like
So don't miss this, this is what it looks like
So call on me, it feels just like it should
    So call on me

In Harlem, where I started to breathe
Your beat was like a soundtrack to me
I was the girl, my daddy was the world
He played the notes and keys
He said to look for melody in everything

It feels just like it should
I wake up, this, this is what it looks like
So don't miss this, this is what it looks like
So call on me, it feels just like it should
    So call on me

    Jerk Ribs
  • The first single from Kelis' Food album, this was released on January 28, 2014, but it had previously been available to download for free from the singer's website since April 2013.
  • Food was produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. Speaking about the album's title, Kelis told HipHollywood : "We recorded in a house. It was Dave's house and he lives really close to me. It was a huge band, so people were there, and people are hungry. So we were eating, and recording, and singing, and eating some more and it was a lot of that. It wasn't the plan but that's just what it ended up being because that's just who we are. It was really natural and it felt really good and it tasted really good too."
  • The Food title is thematically appropriate to Kelis' own skills. She trained part-time as a chef in the late 2000s, eventually graduating from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school. Her Saucy and Sweet show premiered on The Cooking Channel on February 25, 2014.
  • The eclectic video sees Kelis posing for photoshoots and performing at a garden party. "This song is the cornerstone of my album," she told Time magazine. "So I wanted the video to look like my life, my love - back to the beginning."
  • This was originally named "Call On Me" before Kelis reverted to the random placeholder title Dave Sitek used to describe the song in the studio.

    Fallen Ones Lyrics

Born on the edge of a borderline
In the simmering summer of sweet blue fire
Now you walk on the cold cold wind
    Nothing left of your light
The living sun just falls away leaving only day ~ day for night
Again and again the comrades fall
The tears roll down and the wounded crawl
In this heartless crazy world the wounds just burn like fire
Light a light for the Fallen Ones
Light a light and hold it ~ hold it high
Your burning star turned to midnight sun
I will stay alive for the fallen ones
Dancing with the smoke of your devastated flame
Dancing with the smoke dancing with the rain
    So cold being here again
So I call your name ~ I call ~ I call your name

    You've Got Nothing To Lose
  • This song was produced by Jack White and recorded in the summer of 2013. It was released as part of White's Third Man Records' Blue Series of singles. Speaking about working with the former White Stripes frontman, Kiwanuka told NME: "I'm a big fan of Jack White. I used to hear his guitar riffs in secondary school growing up as a teenager."

"He inspired loads of us to start bands and pick up a guitar, which I did," Kiwanuka added. "He's an artist that still inspires me today, so it was such a pleasure getting to work with him, and put out this single on Third Man Records."
  • This was released as a double A-side with a cover of Townes Van Zandt's "Waitin' Round To Die," from the Texas singer-songwriter's first album, 1968's For the Sake of the Song. Kiwanuka previously performed the tune while filming an episode of Austin City Limits at the Moody Theater on June 10, 2013.

    Barracuda Lyrics

So this ain't the end, I saw you again today
Had to turn my heart away
You smiled like the Sun, kisses for everyone
    And tales, it never fails!

You lying so low in the weeds
    Bet you gonna ambush me
You'd have me down, down, down to my knees
    Wouldn't you, Barracuda?

Back over time when we were all trying for free
Met up with porpoise and me
No right no wrong you're selling a song, a name
    Whisper game

If the real thing don't do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn it out to the wick
    Aren't you, Barracuda?

"Sell me sell you" the porpoise said
Dive down deep to save my head
You, I think you got the blues too.

All that night and all the next
    Swam without looking back
Made for the western pools, silly fools!

    Barracuda
  • This was written by Ann and Nancy Wilson together with guitarist Roger Fisher and drummer Michael DeRosier. According to the band, the song is a statement about the record industry in general. It was written at a time when there was friction between the band and their label. Little Queen was the first album Heart released for the CBS-Portrait label. Their old label, Mushroom Records, sued the band and in 1978 released Magazine, an album made up of previously recorded material that Heart did not want released. (Thanks to Sovereign Records for this information.)
  • The Wilson sisters revealed in various interviews that the song was about Heart's anger towards an ad Mushroom Records placed in trade publications implying that Ann and Nancy were lesbians having an affair (see the full ad and read more about it). The song focuses on Ann's rage towards a promoter who came up to her after a concert in Detroit asking how her "lover" was. She initially thought he was talking about her then-boyfriend - band member Michael Fisher. After the promoter revealed he was talking about her sister Nancy Wilson, Ann became angry and went back to her hotel room to write the song. Nancy put suitably angry music to the words to complete the song comparing the sleazy side of music to a dangerous fish.
  • This song can be heard in the movies Wag the Dog (1997), Charlie's Angles (2000), Roll Bounce (2005), You Again (2010), The Campaign (2012) and Identity Thief (2013).

TV series to feature the song include The Sopranos, Chuck and My Name Is Earl. It was also used in a 2009 episode of Glee where it was performed by Lea Michele and Adam Lambert.
  • Fergie performed this with Heart at the 2008 Idol Gives Back charity special on American Idol. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • During the 2008 presidential campaign, this song was used as the as the unofficial theme song for Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin. The Alaska governor originally earned the nickname "Sarah Barracuda" when she played basketball in high school, because of her fierce competitiveness. The name was revived after Palin became mayor of her hometown, Wasilla, in 1996 and it was played at the 2008 National Republican Convention, after she gave a speech. The next day, Ann and Nancy Wilson issued a statement that said: "The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission. We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."

Their wishes were not honored, and the song was played at the convention that night after their presidential nominee John McCain spoke and Palin joined him on stage. As the Republican campaign pointed out, they had obtained the proper performance rights to the song and were under no obligation to get further permission to use it (they would have if they wanted to use it in a commercial or video).

With no legal recourse, the Wilson sisters retaliated in the media, telling Entertainment Weekly: "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

The song's co-writer Roger Fisher was also anti-Palin, but he saw things differently, telling Reuters he was "thrilled" that the song was being used as it was a win-win situation. He explained that while Heart gets publicity and royalties, the Republicans benefit from "the ingenious placement of a kick-ass song." He added that he would use some of the proceeds in a donation to the Obama campaign, and thus, "the Republicans are now supporting Obama."
