White Fire Lyrics

White Fire
  • This rumination over distant youth serves as the emotional centerpiece of Burn Your Fire For No Witness, Angel Olsen's debut album with Jagjaguwar after a lengthy stint with her friend's label, Bathetic Records. It was also the Missouri-born singer-songwriter's first full band release, having enlisted her former Chicago cafe co-worker Josh Jaeger to play drums and the stickman's friend Stewart Bronaugh as bassist.
  • Olsen told Billboard magazine that she didn't originally intend to record the song. "It was one of the last things I had written and wasn't meant to be shared, but I ended up taking the album title from it," she said.

"A lot of the songs on the album are about knowing the self outside of everything else and I think of ('White Fire') as being from the perspective of this character who has grown old and is going back to the beginning of who they were," Olsen added. "They're thinking about how many times they were defiant and confident that they were doing the right thing, but in hindsight they're like 'Oh, that was kind of silly. I was so fierce and yet so wrong.'"

    Not Now Lyrics

Come here, please hold my hand LORD now
Help me, I'm scared please show me how
To fight this, God has a master plan
And I guess, I am in his demand

Please save me, this time I cannot run
And I'll see, you when this is done
And now I, have come to realize
That you are, the one who's left behind

    Please stay, until I'm gone
I'm here, hold on, to me
    I'm right here, waiting

I see, the light it feels good
And I'll come, back soon just like you would
It's useless, my name has made the list
And I wish, I gave you one last kiss

    Please stay, until I'm gone
I'm here, hold on, to me
    I'm right here, waiting
And take, my one last breath
    And don't forget
That I will be right here, waiting [Repeat: x3]

    Not Now
  • This song is about fear. It could be fear of fate, fear of the world, fear of being alone, etc. He wants company and someone to "hold his hand" and "help" him. When he asks to be shown "how to fight this," the song may be referring to fate. He is afraid of the idea that he can't control his life and he will have to be part of "God's masterplan." (thanks, Chloe - Hampshire, England)
  • Tom DeLonge: "This song is about when you die, and you've just realized you died. You're looking at your lady, trying to say goodbye, and you can see her and you know she's there, but she can't see you and it's too late."
  • The original chorus lyrics were: "Let's dance until I'm gone, I'm here hold on to me, goodbye, I'm leaving." (thanks, Arkady - London, England, for above 2)

    It's you and me
It's slow dancing to anything playing
    It's us colliding
It's never finding when we should say when

    I-I-I can feel it
When I look in your eyes so clearly
I-I can see that you need me
    And all that we were
    I-I can taste it
All the days that you've been wastin'
I-I know that you can't face them
    And all that we were

    In a moment
    You were everything to me
    In this moment
We're living in a Heartbreak Dream
We're living in a heartbreak dream

    It's holding hands
It's makin' plans that we're never keeping
    It's silent drivin'
It's always finding reasons to sleep in

Ah, ah, when you're near me
I'm yelling and you can't hear me
Can you feel me, and all that we were?
    I-I can taste it
All the days that we've been wastin'
I know that you can't face them
    And all that we were

    In a moment
    You were everything to me
    In this moment
We're living in a heartbreak dream

    In a moment
    You were everything to me
    In this moment
We're living in a heartbreak dream
We're living in a heartbreak dream

When you hold me, it feels like you don't know me
    We are worlds apart
When you kiss me, I know you haven't missed me
    You keep breaking my heart
    You keep breaking my heart
    You keep breaking my heart

    In a moment
    You were everything to me
    In this moment
We're living in a heartbreak dream

  • Who told Spin magazine that despite its title, this isn't a breakup song. She explained: "It's more about the kind of relationship that you probably should end but for some reason neither of you can - nobody's happy, nothing good is happening, you complain about it all the time, but you just don't end it."

She added: "A lot of my songs are like that, looking at complicated relationships rather than just being about being in love and being happy."
  • This song is a musical dichotomy: a lyric about pouring one's heart out over upbeat instrumentation. This was a conscious decision for Betty Who. "I didn't want to write songs that would always make you want to slit your wrists in the bathtub. I spent a lot of time writing those songs, I think those are the ones that come most naturally to me, How dark is that?" she told Radio.com . "So I have always loved the fact that I can sing music that's about [pain], but makes you dance, makes you feel good."
  • Who wrote this with her producer Peter Thomas in his bedroom in Los Angeles, after telling him about an ex-boyfriend of hers.

It is now the witching hour

    Murderers you're murderers
We are not the same as you

    The Gloaming
  • This song is built entirely around tape loops. There are no real instruments played on this song. The loops sound like broken records with Thom Yorke singing over them.
  • The alternate title for this track is "Softly Open Our Mouths In The Cold." (thanks, rudi - melbourne, Australia, for above 2)
  • In an interview with Mojo magazine February 2008, bassist Colin Greenwood admitted that he felt in retrospect that Hail To The Thief should have been pruned of a few tracks including this one: "I didn't want 3 or 4 songs on there, because I thought some of the ideas we were trying out weren't completely finished." He then went on to give "The Gloaming" as an example. "We played it live and it was cool. My brother [Jonny] sampled each of the instruments on stage, cut them up then sent them back into the mix. It was so exciting, like a live DJ show, and Thom performed off of all of that. But it wasn't the same in the studio. For me, Hail To The Thief was more of a holding process, really."
  • Thom Yorke told the New Musical Express: "I don't know if you have this kind of experience in your job, but in mine, you meet people who have stopped being humans. You see, in an office, there is always an ambitious asshole who just doesn't care if he causes any disservice to anybody and who really thinks he's right to do so. Or if you meet a powerful politician, it's like an empty handshaking. The empty-eyed tornado. The Gloaming, according to me, explores this sick darkness which seems impossible to block." • Drummer Joe Bradley explained that this jaunty song highlights how the benefits of technology can cut both ways. "Often we find ourselves the benefactor of these modern luxuries and are awarded the immediate reinforcement from our social peers," he explained. "The permanence of any actions executed in the public realm is often overlooked. This song aims to remind everyone of those realities."
  • The Andy Capper directed video features The Black Lips playing live and wandering through their home city of Atlanta. The clip was inspired by Husker Du's "Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely," which was shot on VHS. Capper explained to Vice: "For this one I just wanted the band to be in their hometown, being themselves, hanging with pals and performing."

"For me Black Lips are like the punk pre-Sgt Pepper Beatles," he added. "There is so much natural charisma that it makes them a joy to shoot."

The Back Roads and the Back Row Lyrics

Moon coming through the pines, cranking up a country song,
Heaven right by your side, and a Saturday night barely hanging on.
Sun shining through the stained glass, humming just as I am.
I'm praying that feeling would last, that feeling that saves you,
Makes you wanna raise your hands.

That's the way it was, and that's the way it is when you're growing
Up in the mud and buck the way we did.
It got me where I am and where I'm gonna go.
    We learned all about believing
And everything we were ever gonna need to know.
Somewhere between The Back Roads and the Back Row.

I had my first taste of beer
My first taste of a broken heart
There were good times, there were tears
But every red dirt memory left a mark
Like the words written there in red
Like the streets that are made of gold
Where we always bowed our heads, where momma saved our seats
    And Jesus saved our souls

That's the way it was, and that's the way it is when you're growing
Up in the mud and buck the way we did.
It got me where I am and where I'm gonna go.
    We learned all about believing
And everything we were ever gonna need to know.
Somewhere between the back roads and the back row.

It got me where I am and where I'm gonna go.

    Something Beautiful Lyrics

    You can't manufacture a miracle
The silence was pitiful that day.
A love is getting too cynical
    Passion's just physical these days
    You analyze everyone you meet
But get no sign, love ain't kind
    Every night you admit defeat
    And cry yourself blind

    [Chorus:]
If you can't wake up in the morning
Cause your bed lies vacant at night
If you're lost, hurt, tired or lonely
Can't control it, try as you might
May you find that love that won't leave you
May you find it by the end of the day
You won't be lost, hurt, tired and lonely
Something Beautiful will come your way

The DJ said on the radio
Life should be stereo, each day
In the past you cast the unsuitable
Instead of some kind of beautiful, you just couldn't wait
All your friends think you're satisfied
But they can't see your soul no, no, no
Forgot the time feeling petrified, when they lived alone

    [Chorus

Some kind of beautiful (will come your way) [Repeat: x4]

All your friends think you're satisfied
But they can't see your soul no no no
    Forgot the time feeling petrified
    When they lived alone

Devil, Devil (Prelude: Princess of Darkness) Lyrics

This town, she is a temptress
    A siren with gold eyes,
She'll cut you with her kindness,
She will lead you with her lies
She's been called a glistening devil,
    She's good at keeping score
If you make it she's your savior
    If you don't she's a whore

The roads to and from her heart are littered with grave souls.
They gave all of their all and all they got in return is empty holes.
Sure we've all heard about Shell, and Chris, Willy, and Bobby Bares.
She'd smiled on Johnny's the Merles any music-wrote billionaires.
Like a beacon she goes seeking seed, her loins so fertile.
    To a free man she's a prison, to a caged one she's a fire.

She's the reason there's a Sunday morning coming down.
I saw the light, a boy named Sue,
He stopped loving her today. The pill and 16th avenue.
The rhyming, oh she's a diamond the brown eyed mickey
She was Roy Acuff castle and Elvis parsley's broken dream
Its not all bad its not all dark its not all gloom and crass,
But to mine gold in this silver mine it does take balls of brass.
For she's seem 'em come and seen 'em go, and came herself a time or two.

No matter how satisfied her scream sounds she always wants someone new.
The next him or them or her or all to the rest of them all
Be a star in this lady's town you can fuck or you can fight.

You see, it all comes down to money.
Not romantic art of days gone past, if you forget that rule,
You can bet your backside she will bury it in your ass.
A tramp, a slut, a bitch, a mutt, a thousand pawn shop guitars.
A nasty little needle to a vein that feeds a singers heart.
She lurks in friendly shadows, but she's a junky with a limb.
The agents are her bookie and the labels are her pen
I'll tell you a well-known secret of a place known far and wide
The devil walks among us folks and Nashville is his bride

All the chaos he has caused, and done
His greatest tribute to every guitar-toting' dreamer
The devil don't but me, i shook his hand
And i know that he is real, so devil, you can go screw yourself
And then go straight the hell.

Devil, Devil (Prelude: Princess of Darkness)
  • This track contains the second and third part of a haunting trilogy centered upon evil. It starts off with the preceding track, the tensely introspective "Dark Side" where Church talks about putting a bullet in anyone who messes with his family.

Part two is "Princess of Darkness," a speech about the evils of Nashville that Church partially recited straight into his iPhone in the Opry Mills mall parking. He did so not long after learning that Shel Silverstein's estate wouldn't give him the rights to the late author's Nashville-as-the devil poem The Devil and Billy Markham.

The final part, the menacing "Devil, Devil," finds Church taking on Nashville's streets of broken dreams before concluding, "The devil walks amongst us. And Nashville is his bride."
  • Church said that he and producer Jay Joyce set out to challenge themselves on The Outsiders. "We made a conscious effort when we started this album," he said. "We were at a point in our career where, I understand that we had two choices. I could have continued to do 'Drink In My Hand,' 'Springsteen,' 'Creepin' . . . I know how to do those things. I know how to continue the career that way. I think we made a conscious effort to challenge ourselves artistically, and do something that was artistic. That's what we did. That's what we chose on this album. We made it that way."
  • Church told Billboard magazine that no one should interpret this anti-music business rant as being his personal manifesto. "I really wrote that from the standpoint of — I've had my struggles — but I've seen a lot of people who had struggles," he explained. "I've always been so compelled by the difference between a person who come to this town and has his dreams come true and a person who's standing outside on Broadway playing for tips with a guitar case open and starving to death."

"The talent difference is pretty close," Church continued. "They can both do it. It just seems so cruel to me the randomness that one makes it and ten don't. The seedy nature of that is what has always appealed to me."

    Mr. Brownstone
  • This song is about how heroin affected the band. Mr. Brownstone is likely to be their dealer. Brownstone isn't a common slang term for heroin, but it is brown, which is likely to be where the dealer got his name from. (thanks, Sterv - Donny, England)
  • Axl Rose's lyrics mention how the band would take heroin before performing at concerts. "The show usually starts around 7, we go on stage around 9" means they were two hours late for the show because of the drug. Later he sings: "Now I get up around whenever, I used to get up on time," meaning he doesn't care anymore about it, he's so obsessed with heroin.
  • At the end of the song in the lyrics: "Shoved it in the bindle and I shot it in the middle And it, it drove outta my mind I should've known better, said I wish I never met her, said I leave it all behind," A bindle is a "dimebag" full of heroin, he shot it in the middle, getting rid of it, and says he wished he never met her (her being heroin) and he just quit it cold turkey. (thanks, Matt - Woodstock, Canada, for above 2)
  • Velvet Revolver, which was formed by three former Guns N' Roses members, regularly played this at their shows.
  • While opening for The Rolling Stones at a show in Los Angeles on October 18th, 1989, Axl Rose said on stage: "Unless certain people in this band get their s--t together, these will be the last Guns N' Roses shows you'll f--king ever see. Cause I'm tired of too many people in this organization dancing with Mr. G--damn Brownstone." It apparently got the attention of his bandmates, as Slash, Izzy Stradlin and Steve Adler promised to clean up.
  • Axl Rose, on his reputation for starting shows late: "I pretty much follow my own internal clock, and I perform better later at night. Nothing seems to work out for me until later at night. And it is our show. I don't want to make people sit around and wait - it drives me nuts. That hour-and-a-half or two-hour time period that I'm late going onstage is living hell, because I'm wishing there was any way on earth I could get out of where I am and knowing I'm not going to be able to make it." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
