And We Run Lyrics

It burns into your heart, the darkness that you fear
You were never free, and you never realized
And love, is a word you've never heard
Your heart is cold cause it burns, the desire to leave the mind

Take your breath til nothing's left
Stars of life upon your chest
And I know you wherever you go

And We Run and we don't look back
And we run til we've had enough
And we run, tell me how to run
And we run, til we break down
And we run til we fall apart
And we run til we've had enough

Don't blink, you'll miss it
Lift up your head. We gotta get gone
Yeah, we outta here
Don't blink, you'll miss it
Lift up your head
Too late, we gone
Yeah, we outta here

And we run, for this killing love
And we run, tell me how it's enough
And we run, far ahead we go

I'ma break these chains, ran through the rain
Never looked back, never quit, worked through the pain
This blood in my veins run cold when I hate
Give enough to keep sane but I never lose hope
This is my time now, no time for tears to celebrate
Put it in the air right now
Never back down, you'll never wear my crown
cause it weighs too much and I crush every motherfucking thing I touch
This is what I've never loved so much
Get involved what's the worst stand up
Here my mic before I ever get far
Man in lights, you lost all my trust
Now it's time to face all of us
Get in line just to spar with us
And it feels so far from us, just take my hand and run

And we run, for this killing love
And we run, tell me how it's enough
And we run, til we never don
And we run til we fall apart
And we run, til it's enough

Yeah, we out of here

Don't blink, you'll miss it
Lift up your head
We gotta get gone
Yeah, we outta here
Don't blink, you'll miss it
Lift up your head
Too late, we gone
Yeah, we outta here

And we run, for this killing love
And we run, tell me how it's enough
And we run, til we never don
And we run til we fall apart
And we run, til it's enough

Don't blink, you'll miss it
Lift up your head
We gotta get gone
Yeah, we outta here
Don't blink, you'll miss it
Lift up your head
Too late, we gone
Yeah, we outta here

And We Run
  • This song is described by frontwoman Sharon den Adel as an anthem about how to live your life. It features the rapper Xzibit; she told Ultimate-Guitar.com about the collaboration: "We contacted the management and they contacted him and pretty fast afterwards we were talking to Xzibit," Adel said. "He heard the song and liked the song and we told him what the song was about. I must say I didn't talk to him but Robert (Westerholt, guitar) did. I was still recording my vocals at the time he was talking to Xzibit actually on Skype."
  • Adel told Ultimate-Guitar how the band made several attempts at balancing between rap and rock, before coming up with this track: "We just tried and tried constantly with several songs and just taking rap music from the Internet and trying it on our songs," she said. "For a lot of songs it didn't work and finally we had this song 'And We Run' and we felt like, 'OK, this could really work with this song.'"

"Combining this with a rap kind of voice like Xzibit's, which is very dark and very heavy and has a lot of bass in it, was a good contrast with mine," Adel continued. "He was like the perfect person to ask for this song and also because he already tried a lot of experimental stuff on his own things. He already tried rap with guitars and orchestration and we felt like, 'OK, he's somebody who's really open-minded or open for this kind of collaboration.'"
  • Xzibit said about the collaboration: "When I heard about the enquiry from Within Temptation to do a track together and Googled them, I was surprised to say the least. Once I had spoken to the band and heard the song, though, it all made total sense and it was fun to discover new ground outside of our genres!"†¨
Robert Westerholt added: "'And We Run' song is about how you've got to live your life now. He's rapping at full force on this song, it's really heavy."

    Automatic Lyrics

    Quarter in a payphone
    Drying laundry on the line
Watching sun tea in the window
    Pocket watch, tellin' time
Seems like only yesterday, I'd get a blank cassette
Record the country countdown, 'cause I couldn't buy it yet

If we drove all the way to Dallas
Just to buy an Easter dress
We'd take along a Rand McNally, stand in line to pay for gas
God knows that shifting gears ain't what it used to be
I learned to drive that '55, just like a queen three on a tree

Hey what ever happened to waiting your turn
Doing it all by hand, 'cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seems so good the way we had it
    Back before everything became Automatic

If you had something to say
You'd write it on a piece of paper
Then you put a stamp on it
And they'd get it three days later
    Boys would call the girls
And girls would turn them down
Staying married was the only way to work your problems out

Hey what ever happened to waiting your turn
Doing it all by hand, 'cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seems so good the way we had it
    Back before everything became automatic
    Automatic

    Let's roll the windows down
    Windows with the cranks
Come on let's take a picture
    The kind you gotta shake

Hey what ever happened to waiting your turn
Doing it all by hand, 'cause when everything is handed to you
It's only worth as much as the time put in
It all just seems so good the way we had it
Back before everything became automatic, automatic

    Automatic
  • The first single from Miranda Lambert's fifth album finds the singer giving fans a glimpse of her past. The Lindale, Texas, native co-wrote the autobiographical song with Nicolle Galyon ("We Were Us") and Natalie Hemby ("White Liar"). "'Automatic' is a song about the good life," Lambert said. "It's about slowing down, taking a breath and remembering what it's like to live life a little more simply. It's not about going back, but reminiscing about what it was like to hang laundry on the line and wait for it to dry and my dad teaching me how to drive my '55 Chevy that I still have but don't drive nearly enough."

She added, "The song brings back good memories and it reminds me to take a deep breath and to remember that getting there is half the fun."
  • This won Single of the Year at the 2014 CMA Awards. Lambert also won Album of the Year (for Automatic), Female of the Year and Musical Event Of The Year (for her "We Were Us" collaboration with Keith Urban) at the same ceremony.
  • This won Song of the Year at the 2015 ACM Awards. Lambert won with co-writers Nicolle Galyon and Natalie Hemby and after taking the stage, Hemby told her, "I hope I can be your Dean Dillon, 'cause you're my George Strait."

Lambert took home four trophies in total from the ceremony, the others being Female Vocalist of the Year (for the sixth year in a row), Album of the Year for Platinum plus a Milestone Award.

    Want to love ya,
    Want to bug ya,
    Want to squeeze ya,

    Want to touch ya,
    Want to take ya,
    Want to (shut ya?),
    Stupid Girl

I can't take this, born to break this

She's going away, she's going away,

She's going away, she's going away,
What's wrong with my life today

    Stupid Girl, stupid girl
    Stupid girl, stupid girl

    I'm a loner
    I'm a loser
    I'm a winner
    In my mind

    I'm a bad one
    I'm a good one
    I'm a sick one
    With a smile

I can't take this, born to break this

    Stupid Girl
  • Scooter Ward: "It always sounded to me like a Weezer song - so much that when I was recording the verses, I couldn't sing on it. Naturally, I called Rivers Cuomo, who's a good buddy of ours, and asked him to write some lyrics. He sent them back, and it was awesome, so he sang on the verses and I did the chorus. The thing is, he never explained to me what he thought the song was about, so I figured it was just about some stupid girl; on the chorus, I'm like, 'Why does she treat me like this?' Actually, it's about me trying to figure out what Rivers is saying." (thanks, James - Ellicott City, MD)

Where did your long hair go
Where is the girl I used to know
How could you lose that happy glow
    Oh, Caroline no

    Who took that look away
I remember how you used to say
You'd never change, but that's not true
    Oh, Caroline you

    Break my heart
I want to go and cry
It's so sad to watch a sweet thing die
    Oh, Caroline why

Could I ever find in you again
The things that made me love you so much then
Could we ever bring 'em back once they have gone
    Oh, Caroline no

Writer/s: WILSON, BRIAN DOUGLAS / ASHER, TONY

    Caroline, No
  • This is a heartbreaking song about a girl who is moving on with her life, leaving the singer to wonder why she changed and what went wrong. Brian Wilson considers it one of his most successful ballads, along with "In My Room," "Surfer Girl" and "God Only Knows." He calls these ballads, "sweet, pretty, angelic songs that people liked."
  • Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson wrote this song with the lyricist Tony Asher, who also worked with him on "God Only Knows." It was a very personal song for both writers. Wilson married his first wife, Marilyn, in December, 1964, and the couple were going through many changes in their relationship. In the notes for the reissued album Wilson explained: "We were young, Marilyn nearing 20 and me closing in on 24, yet I thought we'd lost the innocence of our youth in the heavy seriousness of our lives."

Wilson took his concept of lost innocence to Asher, who drew from his own personal experience to complete the lyrics. Asher had recently broken up with his girlfriend, Carol, who moved across the country to New York City. When Asher visited her, he was struck by how much she had changed - her new haircut inspired the first line in the song.

Asher wrote a lyric in the song as "Carol, I Know," which Wilson interpreted as "Caroline, No," which both men agreed was a much more interesting title.
  • Brian Wilson put a variety of unusual instruments on this track, including harpsichord, ukulele and vibraphone. He used some of the top Los Angeles session players on the recording, including Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass and Glen Campbell on guitar. Blaine created a unique percussion sound by hitting an empty, upside-down water bottle, which is what you hear at the beginning of the track.
  • Brian Wilson recorded this without the rest of the group - on the single it's listed as "Brian Wilson," not "The Beach Boys." The released version was recorded a half step slower so that when played back, the vocal would sound a little higher in pitch. (The same technique McCartney used on "When I'm Sixty Four" - the acetate is in the original key of C major as opposed to C# on "Pepper".) It was supposed to give the vocal a more "youthful" sound. (thanks, Barry Kesten - Bellmore)
  • This was the last song on the original version of the Pet Sounds album. At the end of the song, the sounds of a passing train and barking dogs come in. The train came from a sound effects reel, but the dogs were original: Brian Wilson brought his pooches Banana and Louie into the studio and recorded their barks. This was done to tie in the "Pet Sounds" concept.
  • This song was referenced in the third verse of Neil Young's "Long May You Run," which is addressed to his famous Pontiac hearse; "Maybe the Beach Boys have got you now, with those waves singing Caroline, oh Caroline, no." (thanks, Ekristheh - Halath)

    Dreaming of Houses Lyrics

    Dreaming of Houses
  • This song was inspired by Nina Persson's actual reoccurring dreams about houses and rooms. She explained in an Anchor Shop interview: "They're reoccurring dreams in my life and are big for me. A lot of people may be like "oh shut up about these dreams" but I don't care, it's my record. For me, it's an archetypical thing and a good symbol for how we think about walls and how we surround ourselves in feelings of being trapped. In your room you're locked in, and I think there are a lot of interesting things in there. I love dreams and at times they stay with you longer than 'real' things do."
  • Persson is often drawn to melancholy subjects and complicated relationship issues like abuse and abandonment, despite being happily married to husband and writing partner Nathan Larson. She explained how she stays in touch with these emotions in a Songfacts interview : "You don't cease as a human, as a person, just because you get these institutions in your life. I feel like I can really tune into the mindset of being a mom and all these things. It's all still there. It's just that I've teamed up to become this person along the ride." Besides, she adds, what's the point of writing about happiness, "because when it's there, it's just f--king there and it's great. You don't need to comment on it hardly."

    Settle Down Lyrics

    A soft sound
To the way she wears her hair down
    Covering up her face
    Oh what a let down
I don't seem to be having any effect now
    Falling all over the place

    But you're losing your words
    We're speaking in bodies
Avoiding me and talking 'bout you
    But you're losing your turn
    I guess I'll never learn
Cause I stay another hour or two

For crying out loud, Settle Down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house
    Your arms, my mouth
Now I just stop myself around you

    A small town
Dictating all the people we get around
    What a familiar face
Do you get what I mean now?
I'm so fixated on the girl with the soft sound
And hair all over the place

But you're sure that I'd learn
    I'm pushing through bodies
Avoiding me and walking around you
But you're cold and I burn
    I guess I'll never learn
Cause I stay another hour or two

For crying out loud, settle down!
You know I can't be found with you
We get back to my house
    Your arms, my mouth

    Settle Down
  • This sensual track finds Matt Healy singing of an ill-advised relationship and the chaos that ensures. It was inspired by Michael Jackson, whom Healy has noted his admiration for in the past.
  • The video tells the story of two teenage boys who reveal supernatural powers. It was shot in Redcar, Yorkshire and features various shots in and around the Northern England town. The clip was conceived by Matt Healy and directed by Nadia. "Matty had quite a clear concept in his head of the kind of story he would like to tell in this video," the director told Promo News . "Not a regular love story, but rather that bond and connection you have between friends."

"The video is the metaphorical conception of that," Nadia continued. "About finding that other half which completes you. About breaking free from feeling trapped and isolated in a world where everybody seem to be in on doing you harm and deliberately keeping some looming secret from you. It's about ultimately meeting and connecting with that other human being who you have always sensed was there, and at that moment you meet the world as you know it dies away."

    Wichita Lineman Lyrics

I am a lineman for the county
And I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload
I hear you singin' in the wire,
I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

    I know I need a small vacation
But it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain
And I need you more than want you,
And I want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line

And I need you more than want you,

    Wichita Lineman
  • This was written by Jimmy Webb, who also wrote Campbell's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Galveston." He was driving along the Kansas-Oklahoma border when he saw a lonesome telephone lineman working atop a telephone pole. This gave him the idea for the song.
  • In our interview with Jimmy Webb , he explained how he puts himself into the shoes of the subjects of this songs. Said Webb: "I've never worked with high-tension wires or anything like that. My characters were all ordinary guys. They were all blue-collar guys who did ordinary jobs. As Billy Joel likes to say, which is pretty accurate, he said, 'They're ordinary people thinking extraordinary thoughts.' I always appreciated that comment, because I thought it was very close to what I was doing or what I was trying to do. And they came from ordinary towns. They came from places like Galveston and Wichita and places like that.

No, I never worked for the phone company. But then, I'm not a journalist. I'm not Woody Guthrie. I'm a songwriter and I can write about anything I want to. I feel that you should know something about what you're doing and you should have an image, and I have a very specific image of a guy I saw working up on the wires out in the Oklahoma panhandle one time with a telephone in his hand talking to somebody. And this exquisite aesthetic balance of all these telephone poles just decreasing in size as they got further and further away from the viewer - that being me - and as I passed him, he began to diminish in size. The country is so flat, it was like this one quick snapshot of this guy rigged up on a pole with this telephone in his hand. And this song came about, really, from wondering what that was like, what it would be like to be working up on a telephone pole and what would you be talking about? Was he talking to his girlfriend? Probably just doing one of those checks where they called up and said, 'Mile marker 46,' you know. 'Everything's working so far.'"
  • While recording the song in the studio, Campbell felt something was out of place. He couldn't capture the same feel of the song he'd felt when Webb sang the demo as he accompanied himself on his Hammond organ. Campbell decided that the only way to get the right vibe was to add Webb's Hammond organ to the song's instrumentation.
  • The chiming at the fade that is meant to signify telephone signals was done on a massive church organ. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Glen Campbell told the Daily Mail about his excitement on first hearing this song. He recalled that Webb used to write in the studio as Campbell did his recording. When the songwriter sang to him the parts of this song that he'd initially written, Campbell knew it was a hit. He continued: "I implored him to finish it, and even offered to help. But he told me to go and play my guitar and leave the writing to him." Webb added in our interview: "On certain songs, the magic is undeniable: 'Wichita Lineman' and 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix.' And it's almost as though the song was waiting for the singer and the singer was waiting for the song."
  • Before he became a solo star, Campbell was a prominent session musician, and on this track, he employed many of the people he used to play alongside on studio dates. Campbell played guitar along with Al Casey and James Burton, Carol Kaye was on bass, Jim Gordon on drums, and Al DeLory played piano. According to Carol Kaye, these session players would add a lot of notes to make more out of the parts that were written, and she created most of the intro on this track. "Wichita Lineman" is one of her favorites of the hundreds of songs she played on.
  • The Country group Restless Heart recorded an updated version for their 2013 album Encores. Their pianist Dave Innis told us that having played with Glen Campbell on several occasions including his last two concerts in Branson, Missouri the thought came to him when this song came on the radio that Restless Heart vocalist Larry Stewart, "would be the perfect singer for a recut." He added: "And the original 'Wichita Lineman' didn't have any background vocals on it, really, that I can recall. So it was fun to do a vocal treatment."

  • The 6ft 9in Dutch producer Afrojack attempted to reach new heights on this pounding track. The house-pop tune was premiered on February 2, 2014 on Bud Light's "Cool Twist" Super Bowl commercial with free copies handed out to the first 500,000 people to Shazam. Rob McCarthy, Vice President at Bud Light, said. "Afrojack has an uncanny ability to re-imagine the status quo, and that skill made him the ideal partner to help debut our new Bud Light Cool Twist reclosable bottle."
  • Rising LA-based singer/songwriter Wrabel originally recorded this as a tender piano ballad. Afrojack liked it so much that he revamped the song for an uptempo dance single with Wrabel again contributing vocals.

It's like loving a lion that cannot be tamed
I snap at the thought or the sound of your name
Pulling teeth from my stomach you've been eaten alive
My blood fills your lungs, my soul your inside

My feet they stand on ashes
From the fires that you've made
    Burning bridges
    Just to save your face

    If I say I wouldn't be hostile
Could you say you would do the same
If we're all made just a little bit broken
Tell me who is to blame
Tell me who is to blame

I'm sensing a feeling picking wounds of regret
That left alone there's no scarring ill dig and ill dig
Scratching and itching I'll keep biting my lip
From this pain that I'm feeling
    Picking wounds of regret
    A cut cannot heal
    Unless you leave it alone
    I'll open mine daily
    Leaving Bones Exposed

    Exposed!

    If I say I wouldn't be hostile
Could you say you would do the same
If we're all made just a little bit broken
Tell me who is to blame
Tell me who is to blame

    To blame!

Standing on ashes from the fires you've made
Burning your bridges just to save your face

    Wounds of regret

    If I say I wouldn't be hostile
Could you say you would do the same
If we're all made just a little bit broken
Tell me who is to blame
Tell me who is to blame

    To blame!

    We're broken, imperfect
We were all made the same
    We're broken, we're broken, imperfect
    We are all to, blame!

    Bones Exposed
  • This song finds Of Mice & Men frontman Austin Carlile furiously calling out keyboard warriors who attack him on the Internet. He told Kerrang! magazine: "None of us are perfect; so how can anyone judge anyone else? Those people who pull on their computers and talk crap about other people: what did you do today? What did you do to make your life memorable? What did you do to help? What gives you the right to say something about me?"

    Enough Lyrics

    The color blue
I always felt it like a sigh
    But this is new
This blue fire inside his eyes
    With feet of snow
    I try in vain
He makes the northern lights come dance for me again

    (chorus)
    He's good Enough
    He's sweet enough
He's man enough a little touch
    I need so much
    I want so much
I need to feel that secret touch
    Why can't I break out
Why won't he reach out for me
    Oh Loneliness
    It comes and it goes
    But lately loneliness loneliness
It just grows and grows and grows
Cause here he is living deep inside
    Nowhere nowhere nowhere to hide

    (chorus)

  • Ann Wilson: "This one is directly autobiographical. It's about unrequited feelings and when you do something as personal as this you always run the risk of embarrassing yourself. It's hard to reveal something so intimate, but I think music is also part of the process of healing."
  • Nancy Wilson: "To me this one is very Zeppelinesque. It's got real power but it stays personal, which is what it's got to do to tell this story." (thanks, Shanny - Detroit, MI, for above 2)

    Luna Lyrics

    I will bathe myself
Then I'll wear you for the night
Colors fading, frayed at the sight

    (You're changing in the night)
Oh why is your face so pale and white?

There's a lot of words to call out
Just waiting for the perfect hideout
Down when the walls started shaking
I'm ready for you to find out
    Ah-ooo-ooo
    To find out
    Ah-ooo-ooo

Now that the night has fled
    Just like everything I said
When the moon was out instead

(Not sun, gold, soft and rain)
You burn through my mind, again and again, again
    And again and again

There's a lot of words to call out
Just waiting for the perfect hideout
Down when the walls started shaking
I'm ready for you to find out
    Ah-ooo-ooo
    To find out
    Ah-ooo-ooo

There's a lot of words to call out
Just waiting for the perfect hideout
Down when the walls started shaking
I'm ready for you to find out
    Ah-ooo-ooo
    To find out
    Ah-ooo-ooo

    Luna
  • The song features guest vocalist Rae Morris synchronizing with frontman Jack Steadman. Blackpool singer and pianist Rae Morris filled in for three tracks on So Long, See You Tomorrow, while the band's regular collaborator, Lucy Rose, was on tour. "It would have been great to have Lucy full-time, but it's just not possible, she's a star in her own right," Steadman told NME. "Rae came to one of our gigs and knew Lucy; she sang for us one day when Lucy wasn't available and it sounded great so we kept it."
  • The accompanying music video, directed by Anna Ginsburg, stars London-based synchronized swimming troupe Aquabatix. "The synchronized swimming aspect of it kind of related to everything that we were doing visually," Steadman said. "It was all about animation and loops, and I thought, when I was picturing these synchronized swimmers, it tied into that quite well."

Ginsburg also directed the video for "How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep," from the band's previous album, A Different Kind of Fix.
  • Jack Steadman explained the birth of this song to NME: "'Luna' began in India. I think that's where I started writing it, but it was very much just a rhythm part and a bass line, and it had a cool sort of essence to it, but it wasn't a song. So I worked on it a bit more. It was kind of a very electronic song at that point; it had kind of a dance hall beat to it. And I was singing a melody in my head, and it wasn't sounding right coming out of my voice, and I'd just been introduced recently to Rae Morris, so I called her up, and I thought maybe this was something she could sing on. And she came around to the studio, and it just worked. It was fantastic ... that was the moment I think where it really became something.

Rae and I were so excited about it when we first finished it. We went out that night, and I had it on my iPod, and everywhere we went, we would just want to leave so we could go outside and listen to it again. I think the lyrics kind of come from that night, really, of writing it and going out all night and just listening to it and that kind of twilight moment. And then there's obviously the comparisons between the subject - the girl - and the face of the moon."
