Shogun

Asked by About.com what inspired the title of Trivium's fourth album, frontman Matt Heafy explained: "The reason we picked that word is because when you think of a word like shogun, it sparks all this vivid imagery and storytelling, especially when you look into the definition. It's the highest ranking military general in Japanese times. We really dug it. We felt it was an appropriate name for the album."

The epic title track is the Trivium song that Heafy is most proud of. He explained to Kerrang! magazine February 1, 2014: "It's one of the most epic tracks we have. It's 12 minutes long, it's a fan favourite and it's off the most technical album we've done, with the most parts and most dimensions. 'Shogun' has everything we do as a band, all stuffed into one track."

"We played it live recently and one girl was crying, while this other dude was shaking his head in disbelief that we were playing it," he continued. "It's a song that, we didn't say will never play it, but it seems like we never would."

Grant wrote this for her daughter Millie, who was six weeks old at the time.

We asked Amy in a 2013 interview what Millie - then 23 years old - thinks of the song. Amy replied: "I think she just says, 'This is the song inspired by me.'"

Grant added: "When they were younger, they traveled with me on the bus. I mean, as they got older, I had to take a tutor until they were old enough to not want to travel as much as I did. But I didn't ever force my children to have any kind of emotional attachment to the music I made, because I knew that they would find the music that they loved, and I didn't ever want them to feel pressured. I jokingly have said, 'Oh, I'm so glad I heard 'Baby, Baby' in an elevator the other day, because it's helping defray the cost of your college education.' [Laughing] But it's just like, 'Well, that's what Mom does.'"

Grant is a very popular singer in the world of Christian music, but this was her first big secular hit as a solo artist. She did have a #1 hit in the US with her duet with Peter Cetera on "The Next Time I Fall."

The Nashville producer and songwriter Keith Thomas wrote this with Grant. He worked on several of her songs, and also wrote hits for Whitney Houston, Vanessa Williams, Sophie B. Hawkins and James Ingram.

The video for this song raised suspicion among Grant's Contemporary Christian fans, as she sang it affectionately to an actor - not her husband (and father of Millie) Gary Chapman. Grant and Chapman, who married in 1982, divorced in 1999. A year later, Grant married the Country star Vince Gill .

The Swirling Eddies recorded this on their 1996 album Sacred Cows, which was comprised of comedic covers of Christian hits. When we asked Terry Taylor of the group in 2012 if he stood behind the album, he replied: "Yes, I stand way way way behind it! Look, I had a blast doing it, but no I wouldn't do another. One is enough! I know first hand that Amy Grant thought it was hilarious. On the other hand, I don't think that Degarmo and Key were too happy with the fact that they had the dubious honor of having not one but two songs covered by The Eddies."

To commemorate its 25th anniversary, Amy Grant remade the song in 2016, with additional vocals by her labelmate Tori Kelly. Producer Dave Garcia brought Kelly into the studio to record her take. He then merged her vocals with Grant's original for the updated version.

Grant told People: "Although I had not met Tori at that point, my 15-year-old daughter, Corrina, is a big fan of Tori's and so I was very aware of her incredible talent and was honored she would sing this song."

Kelly told ABC Radio: "I definitely wanted to stay true to the melody and, you know, how the original was made. But it wasn't hard to stick to it 'cause it made me realize just what a great song it always was, and it just felt so classic and timeless."

Ty told Artist Direct the background of this Wiz Khalifa and DJ Mustard featuring song. "That was a blessing right there," he said. "We were actually doing that for Wiz Khalifa's album. The same day, we did another song called 'That's Right.' He picked 'That's Right' for his album. I was like, "Let me get 'Or Nah'." He said, 'Cool, do it!' At first, he had his verses and I was only on the hook. I added my second verse. My homie brought the violins to make it match up with the rest of Beach House."

The song's music video was directed by Ryan Patrick (Tesla Boy's "Fantasy"). The eerie clip finds Ty Dolla $ign pursuing a mysterious beautiful woman. The visual also features cameos from Wiz Khalifa and the Weeknd.

This song mainstreamed the slang term "or nah," which is added to the end of a sentence as a way of saying "or not" - but in a cooler more dismissive way. The phrase often follows the clicking sound of a tongue.

Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)

This song by the Australian worship band Hillsong United tells the story, as recounted in Matthew 14 v22-33, of Peter being called by Jesus to walk on the water. The disciple did so, but temporarily lost faith and started to sink, so he was forced to call on Jesus to rescue him. According to Hillsong it's, "about stepping into the unknown and a song about faith and trust."

The vocalist is Taya Smith, a newcomer to the Hillsong team. She sung the whole song in one take.

This debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 dated February 2014. It wasn't the first Hillsong song to reach the US singles chart – a version of Darlene Zschech's "Shout to the Lord" was performed by the by the remaining eight contestants of American Idol and a Gospel choir on the reality singing show in 2008 and debuted at #43 on the Hot 100 the following week.

This won Song of the Year at the 2014 Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards. Hillsong United took five honors in total at the ceremony, including artist of the year.

The song spent a record-breaking 45 straight weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs survey until it was bumped from the summit by Carrie Underwood's "Something in the Water." The previous best had been Mercy Me's "Word of God Speak," which spent 23 weeks at #1 in 2003.

Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)

Martha Wash sang on this, providing the powerful line, "Everybody Dance Now!" She was a member of The Weather Girls ("It's Raining Men") and provided vocals for the group Black Box. She was overweight and not very photogenic, so she was replaced in the video by a slender singer/model named Zelma Davis, who lip-synched her lines. Wash's name didn't make the initial album credits either. After some legal wrangling, she was given proper credit for her contribution. In the credits in the video for the song, this line was included: "Additional vocals by Martha Wash, visualized by Zelma Davis."

This wasn't the first time Martha was whitewashed - she sang on three #1 Dance hits for the act Black Box, and was replaced in those videos by a model. Wash sued both the Black Box and C+C producers, reaching a settlement that included a record deal as a solo artist.

C+C Music Factory were the US production and remix duo David Cole and Robert Clivilles. This was their first single under the C+C name, but they already had made hits with the Cover Girls and Seduction. David Cole died of meningitis in 1995.

According to Robert Clivilles, Martha Wash was asked to join the group but refused because she wanted to focus on being an R&B singer. He says she was replaced by Zelma Davis in the video because Davis was the main female voice in the group (if not this song), appearing on eight songs on the album.

The second choice for the "Everybody Dance Now" hook line was Jocelyn Brown, who can be heard singing "I've got the power" on the "The Power ," a 1990 hit for Snap!

Lead singer Burton Cummings says that he wrote the lyrics to this song after getting a very severe case of sunburn while in Hawaii. He composed the track with guitarist Kurt Winter, who joined the band for the Share The Land album following the departure of Randy Bachman .

This song is described by frontwoman Sharon den Adel as an anthem about how to live your life. It features the rapper Xzibit; she told Ultimate-Guitar.com about the collaboration: "We contacted the management and they contacted him and pretty fast afterwards we were talking to Xzibit," Adel said. "He heard the song and liked the song and we told him what the song was about. I must say I didn't talk to him but Robert (Westerholt, guitar) did. I was still recording my vocals at the time he was talking to Xzibit actually on Skype."

Adel told Ultimate-Guitar how the band made several attempts at balancing between rap and rock, before coming up with this track: "We just tried and tried constantly with several songs and just taking rap music from the Internet and trying it on our songs," she said. "For a lot of songs it didn't work and finally we had this song 'And We Run' and we felt like, 'OK, this could really work with this song.'"

"Combining this with a rap kind of voice like Xzibit's, which is very dark and very heavy and has a lot of bass in it, was a good contrast with mine," Adel continued. "He was like the perfect person to ask for this song and also because he already tried a lot of experimental stuff on his own things. He already tried rap with guitars and orchestration and we felt like, 'OK, he's somebody who's really open-minded or open for this kind of collaboration.'"

Xzibit said about the collaboration: "When I heard about the enquiry from Within Temptation to do a track together and Googled them, I was surprised to say the least. Once I had spoken to the band and heard the song, though, it all made total sense and it was fun to discover new ground outside of our genres!"†¨
Robert Westerholt added: "'And We Run' song is about how you've got to live your life now. He's rapping at full force on this song, it's really heavy."

The first single from Miranda Lambert's fifth album finds the singer giving fans a glimpse of her past. The Lindale, Texas, native co-wrote the autobiographical song with Nicolle Galyon ("We Were Us") and Natalie Hemby ("White Liar"). "'Automatic' is a song about the good life," Lambert said. "It's about slowing down, taking a breath and remembering what it's like to live life a little more simply. It's not about going back, but reminiscing about what it was like to hang laundry on the line and wait for it to dry and my dad teaching me how to drive my '55 Chevy that I still have but don't drive nearly enough."

This is a heartbreaking song about a girl who is moving on with her life, leaving the singer to wonder why she changed and what went wrong. Brian Wilson considers it one of his most successful ballads, along with "In My Room," "Surfer Girl" and "God Only Knows." He calls these ballads, "sweet, pretty, angelic songs that people liked."

Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson wrote this song with the lyricist Tony Asher, who also worked with him on "God Only Knows." It was a very personal song for both writers. Wilson married his first wife, Marilyn, in December, 1964, and the couple were going through many changes in their relationship. In the notes for the reissued album Wilson explained: "We were young, Marilyn nearing 20 and me closing in on 24, yet I thought we'd lost the innocence of our youth in the heavy seriousness of our lives."

Wilson took his concept of lost innocence to Asher, who drew from his own personal experience to complete the lyrics. Asher had recently broken up with his girlfriend, Carol, who moved across the country to New York City. When Asher visited her, he was struck by how much she had changed - her new haircut inspired the first line in the song.

Asher wrote a lyric in the song as "Carol, I Know," which Wilson interpreted as "Caroline, No," which both men agreed was a much more interesting title.

Brian Wilson put a variety of unusual instruments on this track, including harpsichord, ukulele and vibraphone. He used some of the top Los Angeles session players on the recording, including Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass and Glen Campbell on guitar. Blaine created a unique percussion sound by hitting an empty, upside-down water bottle, which is what you hear at the beginning of the track.

Brian Wilson recorded this without the rest of the group - on the single it's listed as "Brian Wilson," not "The Beach Boys." The released version was recorded a half step slower so that when played back, the vocal would sound a little higher in pitch. (The same technique McCartney used on "When I'm Sixty Four" - the acetate is in the original key of C major as opposed to C# on "Pepper".) It was supposed to give the vocal a more "youthful" sound. This was the last song on the original version of the Pet Sounds album. At the end of the song, the sounds of a passing train and barking dogs come in. The train came from a sound effects reel, but the dogs were original: Brian Wilson brought his pooches Banana and Louie into the studio and recorded their barks. This was done to tie in the "Pet Sounds" concept.

This song was referenced in the third verse of Neil Young's "Long May You Run," which is addressed to his famous Pontiac hearse; "Maybe the Beach Boys have got you now, with those waves singing Caroline, oh Caroline, no." (thanks, Ekristheh - Halath)

This song was inspired by Nina Persson's actual reoccurring dreams about houses and rooms. She explained in an Anchor Shop interview: "They're reoccurring dreams in my life and are big for me. A lot of people may be like "oh shut up about these dreams" but I don't care, it's my record. For me, it's an archetypical thing and a good symbol for how we think about walls and how we surround ourselves in feelings of being trapped. In your room you're locked in, and I think there are a lot of interesting things in there. I love dreams and at times they stay with you longer than 'real' things do."

Persson is often drawn to melancholy subjects and complicated relationship issues like abuse and abandonment, despite being happily married to husband and writing partner Nathan Larson. She explained how she stays in touch with these emotions in a Songfacts interview : "You don't cease as a human, as a person, just because you get these institutions in your life. I feel like I can really tune into the mindset of being a mom and all these things. It's all still there. It's just that I've teamed up to become this person along the ride." Besides, she adds, what's the point of writing about happiness, "because when it's there, it's just f--king there and it's great. You don't need to comment on it hardly."

Settle Down

This sensual track finds Matt Healy singing of an ill-advised relationship and the chaos that ensures. It was inspired by Michael Jackson, whom Healy has noted his admiration for in the past.

The video tells the story of two teenage boys who reveal supernatural powers. It was shot in Redcar, Yorkshire and features various shots in and around the Northern England town. The clip was conceived by Matt Healy and directed by Nadia. "Matty had quite a clear concept in his head of the kind of story he would like to tell in this video," the director told Promo News . "Not a regular love story, but rather that bond and connection you have between friends."

"The video is the metaphorical conception of that," Nadia continued. "About finding that other half which completes you. About breaking free from feeling trapped and isolated in a world where everybody seem to be in on doing you harm and deliberately keeping some looming secret from you. It's about ultimately meeting and connecting with that other human being who you have always sensed was there, and at that moment you meet the world as you know it dies away."
