The Package Lyrics

Clever got me this far
Then tricky got me in
Eye on what I'm after
I don't need another friend

Smile and drop the cliche
'Til you think I'm listening
Take just what I came for
Then I'm out the door again

Peripheral on The Package
Don't care to settle in
Time to feed the monster
I don't need another friend

Comfort is a mystery
Crawling out of my own skin
Just give me what I came for
I'm out the door again

Lie to get what I came for
Lie to get just what I need
Lie to get what I crave
Lie and smile to get what's mine

Eye on what I'm after
I don't need another friend
Nod and watch your lips move
If you need me to pretend

Because clever got me this far
Then tricky got me in
I'll take just what I came for
Then I'm out the door again

Lie to get what I came for
Lie to get what I need now
Lie to get what I'm craving
Lie and smile to get what's mine

Give this to me
Mine, mine, mine
Take what's mine
Mine, mine, mine
Take what's mine
Mine, mine, mine

Lie to get what I came for
Lie to get what I need now
Lie to get what I crave
Lie to smile and get what's mine

Give this to me
Take what's mine
Mine, mine, mine
Take what's mine

Give this to me

Take what's mine
Take what's mine
Mine
Take what's mine
Take what's mine
Take what's mine
This is mine
Mine
All mine

The Package
  • The lyrics seem to indicate sex; perhaps a one-night-stand with somebody: "Eye on what I'm after, I don't need another friend." The subject is after something that has planned using clever motives and tricks, he's not looking for a friend: "I'll take just what I came for, then I'm out the door again."
  • Another interpretation for this song is that it may concern the use of drugs: "Peripheral on the package, Don't care to settle in." The subject is set on doing what it is he/she has to do and leave. (thanks, Justin - Sierra Vista, AZ)

  • After original member Laurel Masse was injured in a car accident and decided not to return to the group, this was the song that nailed it for Cheryl Bentyne at her audition. The song was already recorded by the Manhattan Transfer with Masse, and remained a constant concert favorite. Both Masse and Bentyne have recorded several solo albums. • This song finds Malkmus singing of growing up "listening to the music of the best decade ever." He explained to Billboard magazine: "I was trying to write something that Taylor Swift would write, or maybe even more Katy Perry. I was thinking in wide ways. For me I'm a seventies guy, and sometimes when you're in your early adolescence or when the chicks are just a little older, and kind of out of your reach, they're the ones you sort of like at that young age. Seventies chicks and seventies rock."
  • Malkmus sings about the Grateful Dead in the song. He explained to Rolling Stone: "Back then, the Grateful Dead was a fratboy stand-in for alternative. If you were into the Dead, for a frat boy, that was like being into Faust or something. So the St. Elmo's rich guys at UVA would play it on the lawn and throw some Frisbees"

"That song is just like a party at [Pavement percussionist] Bob Nastanovich's house where everyone is wigging out," he added. "It's about loving music, loving WTJU, loving the Butthole Surfers – bonding over that s--t. There's that pathetic rallying cry at the end, 'We grew up listening to the music of the best decade ever!' Which could be anyone's era of music."

    Sunday Morning Coming Down Lyrics

Well, I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my mind the night before
With cigarettes and songs I'd been picking.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid
Playing with a can that he was kicking.
Then I walked across the street
And caught the Sunday smell of someone frying chicken.
And Lord, it took me back to something that I'd lost
    Somewhere, somehow along the way.

    On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short a' dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
    Of the sleeping city sidewalk
    And Sunday Morning Coming Down.

In the park I saw a daddy
With a laughing little girl that he was swinging.
And I stopped beside a Sunday school
And listened to the songs they were singing.
Then I headed down the street,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing,
And it echoed through the canyon
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

    On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short a' dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
    Of the sleeping city sidewalk
    And Sunday morning coming down.

    Sunday Morning Coming Down
  • Kris Kristofferson wrote this song while living in a run-down tenement in Nashville when he was working as a janitor for Columbia Records - a strange occupation considering he had a master's degree from Oxford University and risen to the rank of captain in the US Army. But Kristofferson wanted to be a songwriter, so he turned down a professor position at the US Military Academy at West Point and swept floors at Columbia waiting for his break.

In the military Kristofferson learned to fly planes and he worked as a commercial helicopter pilot in Nashville, and the story of how he got his demo tape of this song to Cash has become legend: He flew his National Guard helicopter to Cash's front yard, where he landed and delivered the tape. The story is often skewed to imply that Cash had never met Kristofferson, but they had known each other since 1965. In a 2008 interview with the San Luis Obispo Tribune, Kristofferson explained: "I knew John before then. I'd been his janitor at the recording studio, and I'd pitched him every song I ever wrote, so he knew who I was. But it was still kind of an invasion of privacy that I wouldn't recommend.

To be honest, I don't think he was there. He had a whole story about me getting out of the helicopter with a tape in one hand and a beer in the other.

John had a pretty creative memory but I would never have disputed his version of what happened because he was so responsible for any success I had as a songwriter and performer. He put me on the stage the first time I ever was, during a performance at the Newport Folk Festival."
  • This song is about a hangover, with Cash singing about "coming down" on a Sunday morning after being "stoned " on Saturday night. Many of Kris Kristofferson's songs deal with what happens after the fun, and it's usually not pretty. In this song, our hero puts on his cleanest dirty shirt, drinks a few beers, and heads out to face a lonely day.
  • This song was #1 on the Country charts for two weeks in September 1970. It was Kristofferson's first Country #1 as a writer.
  • In a 2009 Rolling Stone article about Kris Kristofferson that was written by Ethan Hawke, it explains that Kris made Johnny Cash listen to the song before removing the helicopter. After hearing it Cash said he "liked his songs so much that I would take them off and not let anybody else hear them."

Cash recorded the song live on The Johnny Cash Show, and before the show, ABC censors asked him to change the lyrics, "Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned" to "Wishing, Lord, that I was home." Cash sang it the way Kristofferson wrote it, and even stressed the word "stoned."
  • The original version of this song was recorded by Ray Stevens in 1969. At the 2009 BMI Country Awards, where Kristofferson was honored as an icon, he recalled how Stevens took a chance on his tune, when he was still an unknown songwriter. "Nobody had ever put that much money and effort into recording one of my songs," Kristofferson said. "I remember the first time I heard it - he's a wonderful singer - I had to leave the publishing house and I just sat on the steps and wept because it was such a beautiful thing."

Stevens added that he was drawn to the song because he felt Kristofferson had a "spark."

"He was very talented, very smart and right on time with his style," Stevens recalled. "A lot of people since then have copied those songs that he put out so at this point in time it doesn't seem all that different. It still is of course. There are very few writers who get that spark at the right time."

  • This imagined exchange between gruff Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles and greedy point guard Brandon Jennings is one of several tracks on Wig Out at Jagbags that introduces horns to Malkmus' indie stew. Uncut magazine commented to the Jicks frontman that the horns sound like he's got a thing for early Chicago. Malkmus replied: "I been meaning to do a Chicago Transit Authority-style jam for years but it's tricky stuff. But I found the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra (an online sound bank) for free on the web and bashed out an arrangement."

    Morning alone
    When you come home
    I breath a little faster
    Every time we're together
    It'd never be the same
    If you're not here
How can you stay away, away so long.

    Why can't we stay together
    Give me a reason
    Give me a reason.

    I, I don't wanna say it
I don't wanna find another way
Make it trough the day without you
    I, I can't resist
Try to find exactly what I missed
It's Just Another Day without you
    It's just another day oh

    Making the time
    Find the right lines
    To make you stay forever
What do I have to tell you

I'm just trying to hold on to something
(Trying to hold on to something good)
Oh Give us a chance to make it.
To make it no no no

Don't wanna hold on to never
    I'm not that strong
    I'm not that strong.

    I, I don't wanna say it
I don't wanna find another way
Make it trough the day without you
    I, I can't resist
Trying to find exactly what I missed

    Shogun Lyrics

Won't walk the earth a specter
Won't hold my tongue from lashing out
This is my writ of honor
Drawn by the blood that I have shed
    The beasts will soon assemble
    Conjoining in their putrid flesh
    Their hearts don't beat desire
    They pump violence and poison

    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Death's embracing, all is ending
    Death's embracing, all is ending

Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing
    Down

    The monsters walk among us
Leeching the blood out from what's good
    Infecting at transmission
    Swallowing innocence from life
Our time has come to stand forth
The wretched womb from which they feed
    Behold the loathsome demons
Send them into the hell they made

    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Death's embracing, all is ending
    Death's embracing, all is ending

    [Chorus]
Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing
Down on your face, ripping your veins out
Your insides win and kill you from within

And the seas will rise as serpents
Spawned from the mouth of earth's surface
Soon the skies will fall fast, burning
Open wide and eat the suffering

    The pulse is now quickening
    Softly, it's painstaking
Look within to calm the storm
    Raging inside the form

    There's no turning back

For I'm witness to the changing

Take all you have brought to sacrifice
For you will lose much more
If you succeed in this battle
You still will lose so much more

    The pulse is now quickening
    Softly, it's painstaking
Look within to calm the storm
    Raging inside the form

    There's no turning back

For I'm witness to the changing

Take all you have brought to sacrifice
For you will lose much more
If you succeed in this battle
You still will lose so much more

    [Repeat: x4]
Time has come to face all evil

Now the seas rise up as serpents
Spawned from the mouth of earth's surface
As the skies now fall fast burning
Open wide and face the suffering

The inferno spews out hell's horde
Casting the flames upon our world
As death eclipses all the light
We make our last stand, 'til death: fight

Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing

    [Chorus]

    Shogun
  • Asked by About.com what inspired the title of Trivium's fourth album, frontman Matt Heafy explained: "The reason we picked that word is because when you think of a word like shogun, it sparks all this vivid imagery and storytelling, especially when you look into the definition. It's the highest ranking military general in Japanese times. We really dug it. We felt it was an appropriate name for the album."
  • The epic title track is the Trivium song that Heafy is most proud of. He explained to Kerrang! magazine February 1, 2014: "It's one of the most epic tracks we have. It's 12 minutes long, it's a fan favourite and it's off the most technical album we've done, with the most parts and most dimensions. 'Shogun' has everything we do as a band, all stuffed into one track."

"We played it live recently and one girl was crying, while this other dude was shaking his head in disbelief that we were playing it," he continued. "It's a song that, we didn't say will never play it, but it seems like we never would."

    Baby Baby Lyrics

    Baby Baby
  • Grant wrote this for her daughter Millie, who was six weeks old at the time.

We asked Amy in a 2013 interview what Millie - then 23 years old - thinks of the song. Amy replied: "I think she just says, 'This is the song inspired by me.'"

Grant added: "When they were younger, they traveled with me on the bus. I mean, as they got older, I had to take a tutor until they were old enough to not want to travel as much as I did. But I didn't ever force my children to have any kind of emotional attachment to the music I made, because I knew that they would find the music that they loved, and I didn't ever want them to feel pressured. I jokingly have said, 'Oh, I'm so glad I heard 'Baby, Baby' in an elevator the other day, because it's helping defray the cost of your college education.' [Laughing] But it's just like, 'Well, that's what Mom does.'"
  • Grant is a very popular singer in the world of Christian music, but this was her first big secular hit as a solo artist. She did have a #1 hit in the US with her duet with Peter Cetera on "The Next Time I Fall."
  • The Nashville producer and songwriter Keith Thomas wrote this with Grant. He worked on several of her songs, and also wrote hits for Whitney Houston, Vanessa Williams, Sophie B. Hawkins and James Ingram.
  • The video for this song raised suspicion among Grant's Contemporary Christian fans, as she sang it affectionately to an actor - not her husband (and father of Millie) Gary Chapman. Grant and Chapman, who married in 1982, divorced in 1999. A year later, Grant married the Country star Vince Gill .
  • The Swirling Eddies recorded this on their 1996 album Sacred Cows, which was comprised of comedic covers of Christian hits. When we asked Terry Taylor of the group in 2012 if he stood behind the album, he replied: "Yes, I stand way way way behind it! Look, I had a blast doing it, but no I wouldn't do another. One is enough! I know first hand that Amy Grant thought it was hilarious. On the other hand, I don't think that Degarmo and Key were too happy with the fact that they had the dubious honor of having not one but two songs covered by The Eddies."
  • To commemorate its 25th anniversary, Amy Grant remade the song in 2016, with additional vocals by her labelmate Tori Kelly. Producer Dave Garcia brought Kelly into the studio to record her take. He then merged her vocals with Grant's original for the updated version.

Grant told People: "Although I had not met Tori at that point, my 15-year-old daughter, Corrina, is a big fan of Tori's and so I was very aware of her incredible talent and was honored she would sing this song."

Kelly told ABC Radio: "I definitely wanted to stay true to the melody and, you know, how the original was made. But it wasn't hard to stick to it 'cause it made me realize just what a great song it always was, and it just felt so classic and timeless."

The same day, we did another song called 'That's Right.' He picked 'That's Right' for his album. I was like, "Let me get 'Or Nah'." He said, 'Cool, do it!' At first, he had his verses and I was only on the hook. I added my second verse. My homie brought the violins to make it match up with the rest of Beach House."
  • The song's music video was directed by Ryan Patrick (Tesla Boy's "Fantasy"). The eerie clip finds Ty Dolla $ign pursuing a mysterious beautiful woman. The visual also features cameos from Wiz Khalifa and the Weeknd.
  • This song mainstreamed the slang term "or nah," which is added to the end of a sentence as a way of saying "or not" - but in a cooler more dismissive way. The phrase often follows the clicking sound of a tongue.

Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) Lyrics

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
    In oceans deep
    My faith will stand

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
    When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Your grace abounds in deepest waters
    Your sovereign hand
    Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You've never failed and You won't start now

So I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
    When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
    Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
    Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
    Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
    Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger

    Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)
  • This song by the Australian worship band Hillsong United tells the story, as recounted in Matthew 14 v22-33, of Peter being called by Jesus to walk on the water. The disciple did so, but temporarily lost faith and started to sink, so he was forced to call on Jesus to rescue him. According to Hillsong it's, "about stepping into the unknown and a song about faith and trust."

For another song with a similar theme, check out Britt Nicole's "Walk on the Water."
  • The vocalist is Taya Smith, a newcomer to the Hillsong team. She sung the whole song in one take.
  • This debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 dated February 2014. It wasn't the first Hillsong song to reach the US singles chart – a version of Darlene Zschech's "Shout to the Lord" was performed by the by the remaining eight contestants of American Idol and a Gospel choir on the reality singing show in 2008 and debuted at #43 on the Hot 100 the following week.
  • This won Song of the Year at the 2014 Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards. Hillsong United took five honors in total at the ceremony, including artist of the year.
  • The song spent a record-breaking 45 straight weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs survey until it was bumped from the summit by Carrie Underwood's "Something in the Water." The previous best had been Mercy Me's "Word of God Speak," which spent 23 weeks at #1 in 2003.

    Everybody dance now
    Everybody dance now
    Give me the music
    Give me the music
    Everybody dance now
    Everybody dance now
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
    Everybody dance now
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
    Everybody dance now

Here is the dome, back with the bass
The jam is live in effect and I don't waste time
On the mike with a dope rhyme
Jump to the rhythm jump jump to the rhythm jump
    And I'm here to combine
Beats and lyrics to make your shake your pants
Take a chance, come on and dance
Guys grab a girl, don't wait, make her twirl
It's your world and I'm just a squirrel
Trying to get a nut to move your butt
To the dance floor, so yo what's up
Hands in the air, come on say yeah,
Everybody over here everybody over there
The crowd is live and I pursue this groove
    Party people in the house
    Move (let your mind)
    Move (put me online)

    [Chorus]

    Come on let's sweat, baby
    Let the music take control
    Let the rhythm move you
    Sweat, sweat
    Let the music take control
    Let the rhythm move you
    Everybody dance now
    Da da da da
    Da da da da
Da da da da, da da da
Da da da da, da da da
    La da da da
    La da da da
    Dumb da dumb da dumb
    Everybody dance now

Pause take a breath and go for yours
On my command now hit the dance floor
It's gonna make you sweat till you bleed
    Is that dope enough, indeed
I paid the price, I control the dice
I'm more precise, to the point I'm nice
The music takes control, your heart and soul
Unfold, your body is free and a whole
    Dance till you can't, dance
Till you can't dance no more
Get on the floor and get raw
Then come back and upside down
Easy now, let me see ya
    Move (let your mind)
    Move (put me online)
    The music is my life

Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)
  • Martha Wash sang on this, providing the powerful line, "Everybody Dance Now!" She was a member of The Weather Girls ("It's Raining Men") and provided vocals for the group Black Box. She was overweight and not very photogenic, so she was replaced in the video by a slender singer/model named Zelma Davis, who lip-synched her lines. Wash's name didn't make the initial album credits either. After some legal wrangling, she was given proper credit for her contribution. In the credits in the video for the song, this line was included: "Additional vocals by Martha Wash, visualized by Zelma Davis."

This wasn't the first time Martha was whitewashed - she sang on three #1 Dance hits for the act Black Box, and was replaced in those videos by a model. Wash sued both the Black Box and C+C producers, reaching a settlement that included a record deal as a solo artist.
  • C+C Music Factory were the US production and remix duo David Cole and Robert Clivilles. This was their first single under the C+C name, but they already had made hits with the Cover Girls and Seduction. David Cole died of meningitis in 1995.
  • According to Robert Clivilles, Martha Wash was asked to join the group but refused because she wanted to focus on being an R&B singer. He says she was replaced by Zelma Davis in the video because Davis was the main female voice in the group (if not this song), appearing on eight songs on the album.
  • The second choice for the "Everybody Dance Now" hook line was Jocelyn Brown, who can be heard singing "I've got the power" on the "The Power ," a 1990 hit for Snap!

Hang On To Your Life Lyrics

Thinking 'bout the people gone by
Screaming that I don't want to die
Well you can push your head
But don't you push it too far

Thinking 'bout it's here and it's real
Wondering how I really should feel
Well you can sell your soul
But don't you sell it too cheap

Hang On To Your Life, oh life, oh life, oh life, oh life
    Hang on to your life

    Thinking 'bout betraying a friend
    Thinking 'bout delaying the end
Well you can ride the wind
But don't you ride it too high

    Hang on to your life
    Hang on to your life
Hang on to your life, life, life, life, life,
    Hang on to your life
Hang on to your life, life, life, life, life
    Hang on to your life
Hang on to your life, life, life, life, life
    Hang on to your life
Hang on to your life, life, life, life, life
    Hang on to your life
Hang on to your life, your life, your life, your life, your life, your life
Your life, your life, your life, your life, your life, your life, your life

They gaped upon me with their mouths
As a ravening and a roaring lion
I am poured out like water
And all my bones are out of joint
    My heart is like wax
It is melted in the midst of my bowels
My strength is dried up like a potsherd
And my tongue cleaveth to my jaws
And thou has brought me into the dust of death

    Hang On To Your Life
  • Lead singer Burton Cummings says that he wrote the lyrics to this song after getting a very severe case of sunburn while in Hawaii. He composed the track with guitarist Kurt Winter, who joined the band for the Share The Land album following the departure of Randy Bachman .
  • The version released as a single has a slightly different mix. (thanks, Barry Kesten - Bellmore, United States, for above 2)
  • The spoken section at the end ("They gaped upon me with their mouths...") was taken from Psalm 22 in The Bible.
