Blue Moon Lyrics

I'm so tired of being alone
These penitent walls are all I've known
Songbird calling across the water
Inside my silent asylum

Oh don't leave me on my own
Left me standing all alone
Cut me down to size so I can fit inside
Lies that will divide us both in time

See the turncoat on his knees
A vagabond that no one sees
When a moon is throwing shadows
You can't save the ones you've caught in battle

Oh don't leave me on my own
Left me standing all alone
Cut me down to size so I can fit inside
Lies you try to hide behind your eyes

Don't leave me on my own
Don't leave me on my own
So cut me down to size so I can fit inside
Lies that will divide us both in time

Blue Moon
  • The first track released from Beck's Morning Phase album, this lush acoustic rocker went online on January 20, 2014 ahead of the long player's release. The disc was billed as a successor to 2002's sparse Sea Change. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Beck described it as "California music," adding that when he makes any album, "I'm just fumbling around with chords and a mood. Hopefully something emerges."

He continued, "The songs are coming out of a California tradition. I'm hearing the Byrds, Crosby Stills and Nash, Gram Parsons, Neil Young – the bigger idea of what that sound is to me."
  • The song finds Beck looking for a little human connection as he sings of "I'm so tired of being alone," and the "vagabond that no one sees." Beck previously compared himself to a vagabond on French duo Air's 2001 track "The Vagabond," on which he was a guest vocalist.
  • There is an old Rodgers-Hart standard with the same title, which was originally written for the 1934 movie Manhattan Melodrama and has been recorded by Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and The Marcels amongst a whole slew of artists.
Beck appropriated the song name but didn't include the title in the lyrics.
  • The track also appeared in an episode of HBO's Girls and was included on the Girls Volume 2: All Adventurous Women Do… collection.
  • This was inspired by Peter Guralnick's two-volume Elvis biography Last Train to Memphis and Careless Love. Beck told NPR's All Songs Considered hosts Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton: "I'd had it on my shelf for like 15 years and I finally read it about a couple years ago. I feel like every musician when they're starting out should just read that book."

Beck added that the line "The lies you tried to hide behind your eyes" was influenced by the original "Blue Moon," which he feels encapsulates the purity that Elvis had at the beginning of his career. "When you read the book, you really get a sense of who he was at the beginning and then at the end," he explained. "You see him go through the entire cycle of, for lack of a better term, show business, until he's at the end in Vegas, ensconced in this hotel room, kind of remote and separated from the world and life. But when he's younger, he's just so accessible. He lived with his parents and after dinner would go and sit with his fans who'd all be waiting outside — they were allowed to wait. I don't know, that's what I was thinking about with it."
  • Beck has generally veered towards ambiguity in his lyrics, and a typical pattern can be observed in this song. The opening line - "I'm so tired of being alone" - sets out a theme, which he proceeds to apparently ignore instead turning to enigmatic imagery. "It makes it more interesting if there's a little bit of the elliptical happening," Beck commented to The Guardian of that particular habit. "Hopefully some of it translates. Perhaps it won't literally translate from the lyrics but somehow from the feel of the music. Even in the music, it's iffy you know, but it's a good attempt."
  • This song barely made it onto the album. Beck recalled to NME: "That was a demo I'd forgotten about and put on the shelf, and at the very last minute of finishing Morning Phase, I stumbled on it and we said 'Let's put this on the record too.'"

    Shadow Captain Lyrics

Oh, captain, what are we hiding from?
You've been hiding from the start.
Did some lover steal your heart,
Or did the full moon make you mad?

Oh, captain, why these speechless seas
    That never seem to land?
    Oh I need to understand.
Could a little light be that bad?

I can see your hands are roughened
By the wheel and the rope.
I'd like to look to you for hope,
    I think it's hiding there.
This boat is blacked out like a city
    Awaiting bombers in the night.
Oh you hold your helm so tight,
And yet the sky seems so fair.

    Who guides this ship
    Dreaming through the seas
    Turning and searching,
    Whichever way you please?
Speak to me, I need to see your face,
Shadowy captain, in a darkened space.

If I were to spy a city
    Floating just above the sea,
    Could we stop
    And look for me
Among those playing on the pier?

Or would you turn away knowing,
It was still a ways away,
And if I was there today
you could not see me all that clear.

Shadowy captain of a charcoal ship,
Trying to give the light the slip

    Shadow Captain
  • David Crosby wrote this song with session musician Craig Doerge, who also plays piano on the track. It's one of several songs that Crosby has written after waking up in the middle of the night. He told Uncut magazine February 2014: "It's that moment of half awake, half asleep, and it's happened over and over again."

Crosby added: "I woke up at 3 AM, I was off watch, hundred miles off the coast of California, I got up from my bunk and wrote the whole song down, as it is now without changing the word. I get to the end, 'Shadow Captain of a charcoal ship, trying to give the light the slip,' and I think, 'Croz, you are so f---ing cool!' I'm thrilled by it, but I feel as though it's been trapped in my head, as though I've been gifted it."

    Lives Lyrics

Everyone's afraid of their own life.
If you could be anything you want I bet you'd be disappointed.
    Am I right?

No one really knows the ones they love.
If you knew everything they thought I bet you'd wish that they'd just shut
    Up.

Well you were the dull sound of sharp math when you were alive.
Not ones gonna play the harp when you die.
And if I had a nickel for every damn dime I might have half the time.
    Do you mind?

Everyone's afraid of their own life.
If you could be anything you want I bet you'd be disappointed.
    Am I right?

It's hard to remember we're alive for the first time.
It's hard to remember we're alive for the last time.
It's hard to remember to live before you die.
It's hard to remember that our Lives are such a short time.
It's hard to remember what it takes such a short time.
It's hard to remember to live before you die.
    It's hard to remember.

My mom's god is a woman and my mom she is a witch.
    I like this.
My hell comes from inside comes from inside myself.
    Why fight this.

Everyone's afraid of their own life.

Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)
  • When David Crosby's girlfriend, Christine Hinton, died in a traffic accident in 1969, the singer was devastated. Crosby sought an outlet in work for his debut solo album and amongst the musicians he recruited from his circle of friends was The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, who contributed electric and pedal steel guitar.

Garcia proved to be a supportive figure to the singer after the tragedy. Crosby told Uncut magazine: "When I was making my solo record, I was in terrible shape because my girlfriend had just died. I didn't know what to do. I had no way to deal with it, so I hid in the studio – it was the only place I felt comfortable. Jerry came by every night. Every night he'd show, and we'd tap away."
  • This song features wordless scatting by Crosby. He recalled to Uncut magazine: "I had a double handful of songs, and were good. I was doing things nobody had heard before, like 'Tamalpais High' and 'Song With No Words,' using your voice like a horns stack. They were loving that we'd do s--t nobody else had done."
  • If I Could Only Remember My Name gained new recognition in 2010 when it was listed second on the Vatican's "Top 10 Pop Albums of All Time" as published in the official newspaper of the Holy See, L'Osservatore Romano. (The Beatles' Revolver topped the list).

    No baby please don't go
If you leave me now, you'll take away the very heart of me

    If You Leave Me Now
  • Chicago's bass player Peter Cetera wrote this and sang lead. Cetera specialized in ballads, adding variety to the band's sound which featured many more rock-oriented songs, often written by Terry Kath or Robert Lamm.

Cetera's ballads quickly became the band's biggest hits, with "If You Leave Me Now" their most successful song to that point, topping the charts in the US and UK. Of course, their record company wanted more of where that came from and kept pushing the Cetera songs - the big hit from their next album was his tune "Baby What a Big Surprise." The group found a new audience and became much more successful, but they also got earmarked as a soft rock group, which took the focus away from their grittier, horn-heavy songs. This became a point of contention for Chicago's famed section, especially trombone player James Pankow , who recalls constant battles to get the horns higher in the mix from that point forward.

When Cetera left Chicago in 1985, his hits didn't stop: In 1986, "Glory Of Love" went to #1 US and his duet with Amy Grant, "The Next Time I Fall," made it to #4.
  • Lyrically, this is a surprisingly simple song, but it does have an unusual structure. Depending on how you look at it, there's either no chorus, or it's all chorus. The song opens with the title line, which is also the hook:
If you leave me now, you'll take away the biggest part of me

The next line gives Peter Cetera a chance to show off his vocal range, and makes it clear that he is full-on pleading:
Ooooh no, baby please don't go

The title then returns, but with another consequence:
If you leave me now, you'll take away the very heart of me

The rest of the song is Cetera making his case for why the girl shouldn't leave, in very histrionic fashion. He wrote the words around the melody, which he composed first. Cetera is very good at composing songs that push emotional extremes, and these songs are well suited to his voice, which can reach the notes to accentuate these feelings.
  • Considering their longevity and success, it's surprising how Chicago has been spurned by both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Grammys. The band's only Grammy award came for this song, when it won for Best Pop Vocal Performance By a Duo, Group or Chorus.

The song also won the award for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s), which went to James William Guercio and Jimmie Haskell.
  • This was the first Chicago single to feature an acoustic guitar lead. It was played by the band's manager, James William Guercio, who produced the track. Guercio is an accomplished musician who before working on this song had toured with The Beach Boys as a bass player. On "If You Leave Me Now," he played the acoustic guitar part as a demo, figuring their regular guitarist, Terry Kath, would put down the proper track when he was available. The band thought Guercio's part sounded great, so they left it on the record.
  • In the UK, this was Chicago's only #1 hit. In Britain, the group had nowhere near the success they had in America. They wouldn't make the Top 40 on the UK chart again until 1982 with "Hard to Say I'm Sorry."
  • Jimmie Haskell did the string arrangement on this song along with producer James William Guercio. Haskell had done a lot of work scoring films, and was able to bring a cinematic quality to the sound.

    Electric Youth
  • The title track of Debbie Gibson's second album was about empowering the young generation. As a teenager herself, Gibson felt that the beliefs and ideas held by the youth were just as important as those held by adults. It also reminded them that the future belonged to the youngsters, or the "Electric Youth."
  • Gibson recalled to Billboard magazine regarding the song title in January 2014: "That was one of those channeled titles that I feel was meant to be a phrase infused into pop culture at the time. I never really put any thought into coming up with it. Literally, it, and the song, dropped in and I looked up to the sky, waved and said 'thank you! To me, that's how anything inspired comes. If you and your thinking get out of the way, the universe provides what is supposed to be and it comes on through."

    Rasputin Lyrics

There lived a certain man in Russia long ago
He was big and strong, in his eyes a flaming glow
Most people looked at him with terror and with fear
But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear
He could preach the bible like a preacher
    Full of ecstasy and fire
But he also was the kind of teacher
    Women would desire

    Ra ra Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

He ruled the Russian land and never mind the czar
But the cassock he danced really wunderbar
In all affairs of state he was the man to please
But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze
For the queen he was no wheeler dealer
Though she'd heard the things he'd done
She believed he was a holy healer
    Who would heal her son

    Ra ra Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

But when his drinking and lusting and his hunger
For power became known to more and more people
The demands to do something about this outrageous
    Man became louder and louder

This man's just got to go, declared his enemies
But the ladies begged, don't you try to do it, please
No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms
Though he was a brute they just fell into his arms
Then one night some men of higher standing
Set a trap, they're not to blame
Come to visit us they kept demanding
    And he really came

    Ra ra Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian queen
They put some poison into his wine
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
He drank it all and said, I feel fine

    Ra ra Rasputin
    Lover of the Russian queen
They didn't quit, they wanted his head
    Ra ra Rasputin
    Russia's greatest love machine
And so they shot him 'til he was dead

    Oh, those Russians

    Rasputin
  • Rasputin was a Russian monk who had a vision of the Virgin Mary. As a result he began to wander the country visiting monasteries and religious sects. He preached the best way to get close to God was to sin and then repent. The adulterous monk, (his surname was a derivation of the adjective "rasputny" meaning "loose living"), had remarkable healing abilities. Rasputin adhered himself to the Russian Czar Nicholas and his wife by his healing of the hemophiliac Alexei. He appeared to have the gift of healing their sick son every time he began to hemorrhage. Upset at his increasing influence over the Russian royal family, several Russian nobles poisoned and beat him in the basement of Yusopov Palace then shot him several times. The monk refused to die so finally he was drowned by his enemies in the canals of St Petersburg.
  • Boney M. was the brainchild of German record producer Frank Farian, and they became one of Eurodisco's most successful acts. The group was composed of four singers all of West Indian origin: Marcia Barrett, Bobby Farrell, Liz Mitchell and Massie Williams. Farian later repeated formula with Milli Vanilli and Far Corporation. Their double sided single "Rivers Of Babylon/Brown Girl in The Ring" is one of only 5 singles to have sold over 2 million copies in the UK and is the biggest selling record by a black act there.
  • The textured rhythm was created by a balalaika, which is a 3-stringed, triangular, Russian instrument. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for all above)
  • Boney M Frontman Bobby Farrell passed away at the age of 61 on December 29, 2010 in a hotel room in St Petersburg, Russia, a few hours after performing in the city. Coincidentally, Rasputin also died back in 1916 on December 29th in St Petersburg.

    Outfit Lyrics

You want to grow up to paint houses like me
A trailer in my yard till you're twenty three
You want to be old after forty two years
Keep dropping the hammer and grinding the gears

Well, I used to go out in a Mustang, a 302 Mach One in green
Me and your Mama made you in the back and I sold it to buy her a ring
And I learned not to say much of nothing so I figured you already know
But in case you don't or maybe forgot, I'll lay it out real nice and slow

Don't call what your wearing an Outfit, don't ever say your car is broke
Don't worry about losing your accent, a southern man tells better jokes
Have fun, stay clear of the needle, call home on your sister's birthday
Don't tell them you're bigger than Jesus, don't give it away

Five years in a St. Florian foundry, they call it Industrial Park
Then hospital maintenance and tech school just to memorize Frigidaire parts
But I got to missing your Mama and I got to missing you too
And I went back to painting for my old man and I guess that's what I'll always do

So don't try to change who you are boy, and don't try to be who you ain't
And don't let me catch you in Kendale with a bucket of wealthy-man's paint

Don't call what your wearing an outfit, don't ever say your car is broke
Don't sing with a fake British accent, don't act like your family's a joke
Have fun, but stay clear of the needle, call home on your sister's birthday
Don't tell them you're bigger than Jesus, Don't give it away

Isbell told Uncut magazine (February 2014): "A lot of these are direct quotes, or references to things which was strange pet peeves of his when I was a kid – the chorus especially, I was trying to show what kind of person he was. When I was born my dad was 19, my mother was 17, and 34 now, and I'm barely scratching the surface of figuring out how to be a grown-up. After I wrote it I played it for him, sure did. Lonely Teardrops
  • This was written by the Detroit songwriting team who wrote Wilson's first several hits - the duo of Tyran Carlo (the pen name of Wilson's cousin Roquel Davis) and a pre-Motown Berry Gordy Jr. They co-wrote eight other songs for Wilson. At the time, Gordy was a struggling songwriter, but this song - his first Top-10 hit as a songwriter - gave him the confidence to rent a building in Detroit and start the Tamla label, which would become Motown.
  • Many artists have covered this, including Jose Feliciano, teen idol pop singer Brian Hyland and Michael Jackson.
  • This was one of the 9 songs on which Berry Gordy, Jr. used the royalties to open up the Hitsville USA Studios, which soon became the home of the Motown artists.
  • This was a #1 R&B hit and Wilson's first song to reach the Top 10 on the US pop charts. It become one of his signature songs. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for above 2)
  • In September 1975, while performing at the Latin Casino in New Jersey, Wilson collapsed from a heart attack and a stroke right in the middle of this song. He never recovered and remained in a coma for eight more years; he was hospitalized until his death on January 21, 1984 (age 49). In tragic irony, the last words he sung before collapsing were "My heart is crying." The audience at first thought that his fall was part of the act and they started applauding and cheering. It became evident that something was wrong when about half a minute later, he hadn't moved. The excitement instantly turned into confusion and shock as attempts to revive Jackie on the stage were to no avail. (thanks, Denny - Pittsburgh, PA)

What can you see from your window?
I can't see anythin' from mine
Flags on the side of the highway
And scripture on grocery store signs

    Maybe eighteen was too early
Maybe thirty or forty is too
Did you get your chance to make peace with the man
Before He sent down his angels for you?

Mamas and grand mamas love you
'Cause that's all they know how to do
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your Dress Blues

Your wife said this all would be funny
When you got back home in a week
Turn twenty two and we'd celebrate you
In a bar or a tent by the creek

Your baby would just about be here
And your very last tour would be up
But you won't be back, they're all dressin' in black
Drinkin' sweet tea in Styrofoam cups

Mamas and grand mamas love you
    American boys hate to lose
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues

    The high school gymnasium's ready
Full of flowers and old Legionnaires
    Nobody showed up to protest
    Just sniffle and stare

There's red, white and blue in the rafters
And there's silent old men from the Corps
What did they say when they shipped you away
    To fight somebody's Hollywood war?

    Nobody here could forget you
You showed us what we had to lose
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues

I was coming off a tour with the (Drive-By) Truckers, and I called my mom and she told me about his funeral, which she'd attended that day, and when I got home I wrote 'Dress Blues' in a time it takes to write it down on a piece of paper. I already had the chord progression from a song I've been working on about Mickey Rooney, of all things. The song just fit that tune."

    Guess I'm Dumb Lyrics

The way I act don't seem like me
I'm not on top like I used to be
I'll give in when I know I should be strong
I still give in even though I know it's wrong, know it's wrong
    I Guess I'm Dumb but I don't care

And breaking off wasn't hard to do
But I couldn't stay away from you
I feel love but not the way I did before
This time girl, has got to be forever more, ever more
    I guess I'm dumb but I don't care

And baby since we've been apart
    Maybe I've found I had a heart
I couldn't let go even if I wanted to
You must know baby now it's only you, only you
    I guess I'm dumb but I don't care

    Guess I'm dumb
    Guess I'm dumb

  • Brian Wilson give this to Campbell as a "present" for his help in filling in for Wilson during live Beach Boys performances. It was Brian's most ambitious production to date and marks another step on the road to Pet Sounds.
  • The Honeys sang backup. The Honeys were comprised of Brian Wilson's wife Marilyn and her sister Diane Rovell.
  • This song was originally considered as a Beach Boys track on their Today! album.
  • The lyrics were written by Russ Titelman, who has worked as a producer with Buffalo Springfield, Paul Simon and James Taylor. (thanks, John Jennings - Omaha, NE, for all above)
  • Brian Wilson recycled part of the melody of this near the end of the song "Had To Phone Ya." (thanks, Sean - Chicago, IL)
