Mrs. Major Tom Lyrics

Mrs. Major Tom
  • This is a sequel song, carrying on the story started by David Bowie in "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes," and carried on by Pete Schilling in "Major Tom (I'm Coming Home)." This continues the story, but now told from the perspective of the wife left at home.

    Little Me Lyrics

She lives in the shadow of a lonely girl
Voice so quiet you don't hear a word,
Always talking but she can't be heard,

You can see it there if you catch her eye,
I know she's brave but it's trapped inside,
Scared to talk but she don't know why,

    Wish I knew back then,
    What I know now,
    Wish I could somehow,
Go back in time and maybe listen to my own advice,

I'd tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out,
Talk a bit louder, be a bit prouder,
    Tell her she's beautiful, wonderful,
    Everything she doesn't see,

You gotta speak up, you gotta shout out,
And know that right here, right now,
    You can be beautiful, wonderful,
    Anything you wanna be,

    Little Me

Yeah you got a lot of time to act your age,
You cannot write a book from a single page,
Hands on the clock only turn one way,

    (Yeah)

Run too fast and risk it all,
Can't be afraid to take a fall,
Felt so big but you looked so small,

    Wish I knew back then,
    What I know now,
    Wish I could somehow,
Go back in time and maybe listen to my own advice,

I'd tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out,
Talk a bit louder, be a bit prouder,
    Tell her she's beautiful, wonderful,
    Everything she doesn't see.

You gotta speak up, you gotta shout out,
And know that right here, right now,
    You can be beautiful, wonderful,
    Anything you wanna be, oh,
    Little me

    Little me

Tell you one thing I would say to her

I'd tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out,
Talk a bit louder, be a bit prouder,
    Tell her she's beautiful, wonderful,
    Everything she doesn't see.

You gotta speak up, you gotta shout out,
And know that right here, right now,
    You can be beautiful, wonderful,
Anything you wanna be (Little me)

I'd tell her to speak up, tell her to shout out,
Talk a bit louder, be a bit prouder,
    Tell her she's beautiful, wonderful,
    Everything she doesn't see.

You gotta speak up, you gotta shout out,
And know that right here, right now,
    You can be beautiful, wonderful,

    Little Me
  • This stripped-back ballad finds Little Mix singing about what they'd say to their younger selves, given the chance. They would encourage their 'little mes' to speak up for themselves and stand tall.
  • This samples at the start and end of the song the melody from French composer Faure's "Pavane." The Wimbledon Choral Society's recording of the 1887 classical work reached #20 in the UK Singles Chart after being used by the BBC as the theme for their coverage of the 1998 World Cup.
  • Little Mix's Jesy explained to The Metro that the girls wrote the track as advice for their young fans: "Little Me is about how there are so many things you used to worry about when you were little," she said. "Just the stupidest little things, and then as you get older you just think back and go 'I wish I'd have done this or I wish I'd done that.'"

Calling all the stars to fall
And catch the silver sunlight in your hands
Call for me to set me free
Lift me up and take me where I stand

    She believes in everything
And everyone and you and yours and mine
I waited for a thousand years
For you to come and blow me off my mind

    Hey Lyla
    The stars about to fall
    So what you say Lyla
The world around us makes me feel so
    Small Lyla
If you can't hear me call
    Then I can't say Lyla
Heaven help you catch me if I fall

She's the queen of all I've seen
And every song and city far and near
    Heaven help my mademoiselle
She rings the bell for all the world to hear

    Hey Lyla
    The stars about to fall
    So what you say Lyla

  • Noel Gallagher (from Q magazine, May 2005): "Our poppiest thing since Roll With It. Annoyingly catchy and sounds a bit like The Who."
  • This was the 7th UK #1 hit for Oasis.
  • Sony's insistence that this should be released as the first single from the album helped to fuel the tension between the band and their record label, which led to Oasis not renewing their contract with Sony following the release of Don't Believe the Truth.
  • When Noel Gallagher was asked who Lyla was, he answered "Sally's Sister," referring to "Sally" who is mentioned in the song "Don't Look Back In Anger." Sally is a name he made up for that song, so he's implying that he did the same with Lyla.
  • Liam was not impressed with the song's music video. He recalled to Spin magazine in a 2011 interview, "Some of the videos we did were f---ing shocking. 'Lyla,' for example - we look like f---ing Culture Club on s--t acid."

Liam Gallagher added to NME regarding the clip in a 2013 interview; "It was meant to be a rock 'n' roll circus thing, like the Stones, but it turned into some Culture Club sh--e."

I don't always tell the truth
They don't mind it if you're tall where I'm from
    Anyone I find intrusive
You won't bother if you choose me

I don't only think of you
Eyes can tell I'm insecure; Chloroform
I would rather stand if you stay
Why would I lie to you?

    [Chorus]
My love, my love, my love, my love is,
My love, my love, my love is,
My love, my love, my love, my love is,
    Cruel

Buckle up, we'll chase each other
It's not a lot it's just enough to matter
Anyway you want the truth is
I will marry you on Tuesday

I don't always tell the truth
If you want it you could lose, don't bother
I don't like it if you miss me
Why would I long for you?

My love, my love, my love, my love is,

    Chloroform
  • Chloroform is a slightly hazardous organic compound with an acrid, sickly sweet smell and taste, which sends people off to sleep. The Scottish obstetrician, Dr. James Simpson, discovered its anesthetic properties in 1847 during an experiment with friends. The first baby to be delivered by chloroform was one Wilhelmina Carstairs, however it was only when Queen Victoria allowed herself to be chloroformed by Dr. John Snow to diminish the pains of childbirth when giving birth to her seventh child, Prince Leopold, that it became an established anesthetic.

We recommend that you don't use chloroform at home as it does does cause some unwanted side effects. After waking, chloroformed patients often suffer from dizziness, brutal headaches, and bouts of vomiting.

Phoenix vocalist Thomas Mars is singing on this slinky ballad of a cruel, toxic love with the numbing properties of chloroform.
  • The pastoral, dreamlike performance video was directed by Mars' film-maker wife, Sophia Coppola (Lost In Translation, The Virgin Suicides). Speaking about the clip, Coppola explained: "I wanted it to be a fantasy of young girls fixated on a band they love and try to capture that feeling I remember of seeing bands when I was a kid, when you could totally lose it… and to play up the band as close but out of reach. It's a fantasy audience, all young, pretty girls."

    He Thinks He'll Keep Her
  • This song was inspired by a 1970s Geritol TV commercial (which would now be regarded as extremely sexist and patronizing), in which a husband cites his wife's many attributes, summarizing with, "I think I'll keep her."
  • This song is about a woman who lives a typical, anodyne life devoted to her husband and family, but then after 15 years becomes fed up with the monotony and leaves him. Carpenter wrote the song with Don Schlitz, a Country music songwriting stalwart who wrote the Kenny Rogers hit "The Gambler."
  • With a more pop-oriented sound and an influx of female stars, country music went mainstream in the early '90s, leading to a 2-hour CBS special in 1993 called The Women of Country. This song, with its message of female empowerment, was a showcase song, with Carpenter performing it with Emmylou Harris, Trisha Yearwood, Suzy Bogguss, Pam Tillis , Patty Loveless, and Kathy Mattea.

Carpenter, who was raised in the Northeast and graduated from Brown University, was hailed as a new kind of Country singer - one that could appeal to an audience far outside the typical fan base of the genre.

No One Likes a Fat Pop Star
  • This lighthearted song is a riposte to the tabloids' reporting of Williams' battles with weight problems. In the middle of the singer's Take the Crown tour, a newspaper printed some really unflattering pictures of him performing.
  • The song includes a verse where Williams sings, operatically,

"Now you've upset me I feel like a snack.
A packet of Minstrels, a pie and a nap
    So what's wrong with that?"

"Fat Pop Star started as a joke," co-writer Guy Chambers told The Daily Telegraph. "I came up with the chorus melody, which is very operatic, and Rob can really sing that kind of music. When we performed it for the first time the whole crowd spontaneously stood up and started clapping. It was great seeing the shock of the public following that lyric and to hear him singing like Pavarotti."

This here's a tale for all the fellas
Tryin' to do what those ladies tell us
Get shot down cause ya over-zealous
Play hard to get females get jealous
Okay smarty go to a party
Girls are scantily clad and showin' body
A chick walks by you wish you could sex her
But you're standing on the wall like you was Poindexter
Next days function high class luncheon
Food is served and you're stone-cold munchin'
Music comes on people start to dance
But then you ate so much you nearly split your pants
A girl starts walking guys start gawking
Sits down next to you and starts talking
Says she wants to dance cause she likes to groove
So come on fatso and just Bust A Move

    Just bust a move

You're on a mission and your wishin'
Someone could cure your lonely condition
Lookin' for love in all the wrong places
No fine girls just ugly faces
    From frustration first inclination
Is to become a monk and leave the situation
But every dark tunnel has a light of hope
So don't hang yourself, with a celibate rope
Your movie's showin', so you're goin'
Could care less about the five you're blowin'
Theater gets dark just to start the show
Then ya spot a fine woman sittin' in your row
She's dressed in yellow, she says "Hello,
come sit next to me you fine fellow."
You run over there without a second to lose
And what comes next hey bust a move

You want it, you got it,
You want it, baby you got it (Just bust a move)
You want it, you got it,
You want it, baby you got it

In this city ladies look pretty
Guys tell jokes so they can seem witty
Tell a funny joke just to get some play
Then you try to make a move and she says, "No way"
    Girls are fakin' goodness sakin'
They want the man who brings home the bacon
Got no money and you got no car
Then you got no women and there you are
    Some girls are sadistic, materialistic
Lookin' for a man makes them opportunistic
They're lyin' on a beach perpetrating a tan
So a brother with the money can be their man
So on the beach you're strollin' real high rollin'
Everything you have is yours and not stolen
A girl runs up with somethin' to prove
So don't just stand there bust a move

If you want it, you got it
You want it, baby you got it (Just bust a move)
You want it, you got it,
You want it, baby you got it (Break it down for me fellas)

Your best friend Harry has a brother Larry
In five days from now he's gonna marry
He's hopin' you can make it there if you can
'Cause in the ceremony you'll be the best man
You say neat-o, check your libido
And roll to the church in your new tuxedo
The bride walks down just to start the wedding
And there's one more girl you won't be getting
So you start thinkin' then you start blinking
The bridesmaid looks and thinks that you're winking
She thinks your kinda cute so she winks back
And now your feelin' really firm 'cause the girl is stacked
    Reception's jumpin' bass is pumpin'
You look at the girl and your heart starts thumpin'
Says she wants to dance to a different groove
Now you know what to do G bust a move

If you want it, you got it
You want it, baby you got it (Just bust a move)

    Bust A Move
  • We can thank Young MC for popularizing the phrase "Bust A Move," which means to take action of some kind. The song follows a guy who seems hapless with women, but somehow keeps getting lucky. In the first first, he busts a move by dancing with a girl who shows interest. Later, he considers becoming a monk but meets a girl in a movie theater. At the end of the song, he's the best man at a wedding, and when a bridesmaid shows interest, he gets to bust a different kind of move when she wants to "dance to a different groove." It's all good fun, and it helped make rap music acceptable for a much wider audience.
  • Flea from The Red hot Chili Peppers played bass on this song and appeared in the video, but he didn't reap the rewards. He explained to Bass Player magazine: "I have a bitter taste in my mouth about that, because I feel as though I got ripped off. The bass line I wrote ended up being a major melody of the tune, and I felt I deserved songwriting credit and money because it was a #1 hit. They sold millions of records, and I got $200! Afterwards, my lawyer told them, 'You should throw down Flea some cash,' but the record company said, 'We told him exactly what to play.' No one was even in the room at the time but me and the engineer! It was ridiculous, but I learned from it."
  • Young MC's real name is Marvin Young. He wrote this and also composed Tone Loc's hits "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina."
  • This was Young MC's only big hit, although he did have another US Top 40 with "Principal's Office." He was one of the first to write catchy, fun rap songs that crossed over to the world of Pop. Young MC recalled to Rolling Stone: "People looked at rap and hard rock as the type of music that you slam your door after you argue with your parents, and bang your head in defiance. My record wasn't necessarily rebellious, but it was clever enough to grab in a decent segment of people that didn't listen to rap music."
  • This won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance. It was only the second year the category existed, and the next year it was eliminated to recognize Rap Solo and Rap Duo Or Group performances. The previous years' winner was DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince for "Parents Just Don't Understand."
  • The main sample in this song is a loop from a song called "Found A Child" by a Seattle Funk group called Ballin' Jack. Their song came out in 1970, and it's amazing that it took 19 years for a rapper to boost it - the 15 seconds of bass, drums and vocal stabs on the song makes a perfect foundation for a rap hit in an era when sampling was widespread.
  • Young MC performs this in the film Up In The Air, where George Clooney plays a guy who is constantly traveling. Clooney crashes a convention at the hotel where he's staying, and Young MC is the performer. These private functions are lucrative gigs for artists who have fallen out of the spotlight (and for some still in it), but they are rarely portrayed in movies.
  • A bunch of commercials have featured this song. Among them, a 2013 spot for Payday candy bars, an Old Navy commercial that same year ("Bust in to Old Navy's huge gift sale...") and a 2014 commercial for Southwest Airlines that shows a woman dancing to the song at a wedding.
  • In the 2016 episode of The Big Bang Theory, "The Positive Negative Reaction," the characters Raj and Leonard sing this in karaoke. A tipsy Sheldon proclaims, "I'm being musically encouraged to bust a move. If I knew what that meant, I might just do it."

Robbie Williams - Swings Both Ways

Robbie Williams - Swings Both Ways Lyrics and Youtube Music Videos

    Album: Swings Both Ways

    Swings Both Ways Lyrics

    Swings Both Ways
  • This is the title track of Robbie Williams' second Swing album. The British singer previously released a similarly flavored record in 2001 with Swing When You're Winning. Williams' love of Swing is not an affectation; the former Take That singer has always listened to the Jazz genre because his father was a fan. "It's very camomile, isn't it? I suppose it was a safe place when I was growing up," he told The Daily Telegraph. "Also my dad left a load of records when he left home – all these brilliantly crafted standards. Nat King Cole was his favourite. And I've always been in love with Dean Martin. And Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Tormé, and of course, Frank."
  • The song is a duet with Rufus Wainwright, who is also a fan of the swing era. The openly gay American singer recorded an entire album of songs made famous by Judy Garland. The pair met through Williams' songwriter partner Chambers, who was working on Wainwright's album at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in LA. "I had a week with Rufus on my own," Chambers told The Daily Telegraph. "I knew he had a big crush on Rob and wanted to meet him, and Rob is a fan of Rufus and has covered one of his songs. We had dinner together and we wrote 'Swings Both Ways' the following afternoon."
  • The tongue-in-cheek lyrics were influenced from the time Robbie joined Take That as a 16-year-old. He recalled to The Sun: "When I joined Take That, we toured gay clubs for 18 months. It always used to confuse me and make me laugh when a lot of the gay people I was hanging out with were insistent that everybody was gay. (Adopting a camp voice) 'Oh, well you know about her.' 'What?' 'Oh, yes... definitely. And she helps out when the team's short – do you know what I mean?'"

"According to my manager at the time, I definitely swung both ways," Williams continued. "And I wouldn't judge anybody for judging us back then. So for me, the start of the song was a homage to being a teenager in those clubs and being told, 'oh yes, everybody's gay. Everybody swings both ways.' I'm really proud of that song."
  • So does Robbie actually swing both ways? "I have a lot of gay friends,' Chambers told The Daily Telegraph, "and a typical question is, 'Is Rob a little bit… or is he actually?' and I always say the same thing, which is, 'No, I' ve never seen any evidence of it.' But he likes playing with the ambiguity."
  • Williams and Wainwright recorded the song at Abbey Road Studios with an 80-piece orchestra.
  • Swings Both Ways was the 1,000th #1 album in the history of the UK charts. The Swing theme of the set is appropriate, since Frank Sinatra topped the first UK album chart in July 1956 with Songs For Swingin' Lovers. Williams said the fact that both the first and 1,000th chart-topper was a swing album showed the genre's long-lasting appeal. "I think in these days, with people taking their clothes off and doing drugs and being cynical in whatever way possible to get attention, and good luck to them, I think there is a market for middle-of-the-road entertainment," he said. "It harks back to a simpler time."

It's cold in here feels like everything's upside down
I can feel you talking but I can barley make out the sound
I been kicking around these parts, feels like a year
I'm gonna change this world if I ever get out of here
She wants to dress me in pink, paints my bedroom blue
And I just laugh to myself, 'cause only I know the truth
This love is my only emotion
Haven't learned any fear any pain
It's kind of funny with all this commotion
I guess they've got me to blame
And they don't even know My Name
They don't even know my name

Well I've never felt so ready, think it's finally time
'Cause that big old world is waiting, and it's mine all mine
Just then everything got real quiet, it got real bright
And a man took my hand said don't worry, your momma's gonna be alright
Then he opened the gate and I followed him in
Said you can wait right here, 'til it's your turn again
And his love is the one true emotion
Heaven knows no fear no pain
I never got to set my wheels in motion
They loved me just the same
And they didn't even know name
    Didn't even know my name
You loved me just the same
And you didn't even know my name

  • This song is about a baby inside the mother's womb. The baby is expressing his/her only emotion - love - and what it feels like to be on the inside. Then the baby talks about being born and how he/she takes God's hand and leaves for heaven. The baby knows his/her parents love the baby just the same even though they had never and may never meet. Basically, it's about parents who experience a miscarriage or a still birth.

Got me spinnin' around, I ain't even on the dance floor

You're shakin' that money maker, like a heart breaker, like your college major was
Twistin' and tearin' up Friday nights
Love the way you're wearin' those jeans so tight
I bet your kiss is a soul saver, my favorite flavor, want it now and later
I never seen nothin' that I wanted so bad
Girl, I gotta get me, gotta Get Me Some of That
Yeah gotta get me some of that

Little more what you doin' right there
Swingin' your hips and slingin' your hair
Side to side with your drink in the air
Lord have mercy now girl I swear
Gotta get your number in my phone
Gotta get me some of of you alone
We can worry 'bout it later on
Right now keep makin' this my favorite song

You're shakin' that money maker, like a heart breaker, like your college major was
Twistin' and tearin' up Friday nights
Love the way you're wearin' those jeans so tight
I bet your kiss is a soul saver, my favorite flavor, want it now and later
I never seen nothin' that I wanted so bad
Girl, I gotta get me, gotta get me some of that
    Some of that
Yeah, gotta get me some of that

In my ride, by my side, down the highway
In the dark, in my arms, in your driveway
All because of that smile you threw my way
Yeah girl you got a way of

Shakin' that money maker, like a heart breaker, like your college major was
Twistin' and tearin' up Friday nights
Love the way you're wearin' those jeans so tight
I bet your kiss is a soul saver, my favorite flavor, want it now and later
I never seen nothin' that I wanted so bad
Girl, I gotta get me, gotta get me some of that
Gotta get me some of that

Yeah, I gotta get me some of that
Oh girl, I gotta get me some of that
    Oh yeah
I bet your kiss is a soul saver, my favorite flavor
I want it now and later

    Get Me Some of That
  • Thomas' father Rhett Akins teamed up with Michael Carter and Cole Swindell to write this song. The narrator uses a popular expression to describe his desire to pick up a girl. He sings:

"I bet your kiss is a soul saver, my favorite flavor, want it now and later.
I never seen nothin' I wanted so bad.
Girl, I gotta get me, gotta get me some of that."

Thomas said in a cut by cut just before the release of It Goes Likes This: "I did not write this song, but the reason I recorded it was because of the catchy melody it has. I can' t wait for everyone to hear it on the record. It's also one of the most recent ones I cut for the record and I think everyone will want to shake their money-maker on this one."
  • The music video, which follows two people as they fall in love at a party, was directed by TK McKamy, who also worked with Rhett on his visual for "It Goes Like This." Rhett's wife (Lauren Gregory Akins) has a role when at the end of the clip when the singer notices her from across the room.
  • Rhett Atkins told the story of the song to Roughstock : "I had been friends with Cole and Michael for a long time," he recalled. "My association with Luke (Laird, producer) is how I met those guys. Actually, Cole used to open for me around 2008/2009 when I'd play in college towns in Georgia. Cole would open and do a little acoustic set before I played. I knew Cole from back then, and I knew Michael from Luke. They write for Sony, who I write for, and we'd been talking about it for a while … how we need to get together and do something. They had written a few Spring Break songs with Luke, and then they had Craig Campbell's single ('Outta My Head'). Then they started getting cuts on Luke's Crash My Party record. So we all got together. "

"Cole and Michael played me the first three lines of the chorus," Akins continued. "They said we just kind of came up with this out on the road with Luke this weekend, but that's all we have. When they played me those lines, I was like I'm in -- big time! That sounds like a smash. We just sat there and hammered it out for the rest of the afternoon. Then we went and demoed it a week later."
  • This wasn't specifically written for Thomas Rhett. "We thought his record was done," Akins told Roughstock. "We pitched it to a few people, and they passed on it, just like 'It Goes Like This' was passed on by some pretty big artists. We were scratching our heads going we think this song is so awesome, so why is it being passed on? I think it's just one of those things where a song is meant to be where it's meant to be. Both of these songs I truly believe were meant for Thomas Rhett. I think that's why they were both passed on by a bunch of people. I sent it to him, and he called me saying, 'Dad, I'm cutting that! That's a smash!' He went in and cut it with Luke Laird, and they just killed it. It sounds great. Thomas Rhett sounds great. It's fun. It gets you moving. I think it's exactly what Thomas Rhett needed for his follow-up single to 'It Goes Like This.'"

    Hexagram Lyrics

    Paint the streets in white
Death is the standard breach for a complex prize
I think it's sweet of you and your parents are proud
But I would expect it from anyone now to protect life's indigenous sound...

    Worship, play, play (3x)
    Worship, play, Worship, play///Worship-Worship///
Play and worship, Play, Play (3x)
    Play and worship, Play///Worship-Worship///

    How the streets they swell
While the animals make their way through the crowds
If you keep listening you can hear it for miles
And trust everyone quicker with every faint smile....

    Worship, play, play
    Worship, play, Worship, play
    Play and worship, Play, Play
    Play and worship, Play, Play///Worship-Worship///(3x)
Play and worship, Play, Play (3x)
    Play and worship, Play///Worship-Worship///

    And the crowd goes wild
And the camera makes you seasick
God it's so sweet of you and I know you're proud
And the car bomb hits quick click, click, click, faint smile...

It's the same sound... it's the same, same... sound....

    And the crowd goes wild
And the camera makes you seasick
God it's so sweet of you and you know I'm proud
And the car bomb tick ticks with the same sounds
    It's the same sound
    With the same sound... Hexagram

    Hexagram
  • A hexagram is a potent symbol of the macrocosm (God, the Universe or Higher Energies) and of the relationship between the macrocosm and the microcosm (Humankind, the Earth or Manifest Energies). In its regular form, it is drawn as two intersecting equilateral triangles, and is most commonly seen as the Judaic Star of David.
  • "Suckas" was a working title for this song.

    Misery Chain Lyrics

    Misery Chain
  • Chris Cornell recorded this song for the soundtrack of the pre-Civil War film 12 Years a Slave. The movie tells the true story of Solomon Northrup, an African American freeman from the North who was abducted and sold into slavery. "I was moved by this film and the story in a way that transcends any film experience I have ever had," said Cornell. "I was inspired to write a hundred different songs, but finally landed on one based on what I believe is an extremely important message I took from this man's journey. Compassion, basic human rights and love must be our priorities above race, religion or commerce. Every generation needs a reminder of that simple idea."
