The album is a story of a man and a woman. They both die - the man goes to hell and the woman goes to heaven. The man then makes a deal with the Devil that if he brings 1000 evil souls to the Devil he can be with his wife again. As the last song on the album, this tells the conclusion of their story:
"And we'll all dance alone to the tune of your death
we'll love again, we'll laugh again
and it's better off this way
and never again, and never again
they gave us two shots to the back of the head
and we're all dead now."

This is the last song on the album, and it is his last night of killing before his deal with the devil will be completed and he can see his lover again, hence the lyrics, "Another night and I'll see you" because he is almost done collecting 1000 souls. All the killing that he has done has made him feel dirty and the "stain that won't come off the sheets" is referring to something that he'll never be able to forget. He thinks the devil has lied to him, and he didn't send him to his lover, but he feels that he should stop killing now as they'll eventually meet again in another life. The devil ruined his plans of being with his wife and metaphorically shot him twice in the back of the head, and now they're both dead.

This summery lifestyle jam with a laid-back groove finds Jake Owen singing of a slow and relaxing time by the sea. He sings:

Owen told Rolling Stone this Jaren Johnston, Jon Nite and Jimmy Robbins penned tune, "sounds like if 'Barefoot Blue Jean Night' had a sister song, this would be it."

The song's music video continues the love story that started at the end of the clip for "Days Of Gold." The visual is the second of three installments of the ongoing tale.

Jaren Johnston told Roughstock about the day he wrote the song with Jimmy Robbins and Jon Nite. "I came in there, and at the time, [Kenny] Chesney was picking songs for the Island record (Life On A Rock) that he did a while back with 'Pirate Flag' and all that stuff on it," the songwriter recalled. "Originally when we got through it, I was like, 'Man, this would be great for Chesney.' So I called him and told him I was going to send him a song. He got it and listened to it, and told me it was cool, but he was kind of done with the album."

"I kind of went back in, and we changed it up a bit because I knew that Jake was cutting (Days Of Gold), because I already had a couple of songs cut with him for that record," Johnston added. "I wanted to make the verses more Shawn Mullins-like. We got through that first chorus, and we all thought it would be perfect for Jake. It was totally his world ... he's super on the water all the time, always on the beach or on a boat or whatever. I sent it to him the next morning, and he hit me back immediately saying he wanted to play it for his producers, and here we are!"

The song was Owen's third #1 on the Country chart. The Nashville star first reached the summit with "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" in September 2011, before reigning with "Alone With You," in April 2012.

This was Owen's second summer hit following his success with "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" in 2011. "We put it out hoping it would do well, but you never really know when you put a song out," Owen told Billboard magazine. "The timing was perfect, and it went #1 July 4 weekend," he said. "I guess I'm the summertime anthem guy now."

In this coming-of-age song, Jimmy Eat World frontman Jim Adkins makes his case to a girl, asking her to ride off with him. It's very "Thunder Road" in its sentiment of escaping the confines of where you grew up and seeking something more, replete with romantic intent.

This features backing vocals by alt-rocker Liz Phair. Jim Adkins told Phoenix New Times: "There was something about 'Work' that reminded me of Liz Phair. Don't know exactly what it was. I always think it's interesting to hear male and female voices contributing to complex relationship type songs. Our A&R person had a connection with her, so I figured why not just ask Liz Phair to sing with us. She was into it. So in a couple days, we had Liz Phair in the studio in L.A. where we were working doing backups."

The music video, directed by Marc Webb, was filmed at Madison West High School in Madison, Wisconsin. Through interviews, the students share their fears about life after graduation.

Could You Be Loved

Written by Marley in 1979, "Could You Be Loved" starts with a spare yet distinctive guitar riff that repeats under the track's relentless beat and one of the best known opening lines in history: "Don't let them fool ya! Or even try to school ya!"

The interpretation of this opener and the other lyrics depends on what you think the song's about. Some think it's a love song. Others say Marley wrote it as a ballad to the poverty and struggle he witnessed, while still others claim he wrote it on a plane from Brazil in response to how much love he received when he performed there. Some even see it as being about a man reaffirming his faith in the face of personal struggle. Those familiar with Rastafarianism and Marley's lyrical style (in which he often referred to himself as "you" while simultaneously referring to everyone else, a concept that comes from the Rasta belief that all are one) believe Marley uses the song to convey an urgent message to himself and others: at all cost, stay mentally and spirituality fit inside Babylon's system.

The true meaning probably lies somewhere in a melange of all these theories.

Followers of Rastafarianism see capitalism, government corruption, and even the gold-backed monetary system as part of "Babylon" and live lives as divorced from it as possible.

By the time Uprising was released, Marley and the Wailers had come full circle. Originally a group of shanty dwellers from Jamaica's slums in 1963, the late '70s saw a different Wailers story - and tax bracket. The group was successful, with the trappings that come with it: money, fame, women. This, according to many, caused Marley to have a growing sense of conflict about success in the very system lambasted in his lyrics. As the Wailers began work on what would be their last album, he was also frequently ill as he had lived with the 1977 diagnosis of the cancer that would kill him a year after Uprising's release.

Lyrics to this song read like a disjointed sermon/prayer, where psalms and Bible verses encapsulated into one liners marry preeminent Rastafarian themes like righteousness and revolution. Some examples:

"Love would never leave us alone" could be a reference to Jah, or God, as "love." When combined with the next line, "darkness that must come out the light" - a reference to the Bible verse, "For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad." (Luke 8.17), the lyrics might mean, "Jah will never leave you, so don't worry about anything oppressing you because Jah will reveal and destroy it." All things done in darkness coming to light is an oft-used allegory in Rasta teachings for good overcoming evil.

"Don't let them change ya! Or even re-arrange ya!" reinforce the opening lines. Both lines could be warnings against allowing agents of Babylon to tamper with the righteousness of Jah's children. Marley's exclamations, "Only the fittest of the fittest shall survive! Stay alive! Yeah!", in light of the lyrics prior to it could certainly be another reminder that spiritual fitness is needed to survive in Babylon's system.

Toward the end of the song, the backup singers the I-Threes sing lines from Marley's first single, "Judge Not," a Ska tune about morality released in 1962: "The road of life is rocky, and you may stumble too. So while you point a finger, someone else is judging you."

These lines are likely based on the Biblical admonishment, "Judge not lest ye be judged." Marley's repetition of this lyric from a previous song may have been done to drive home his point about the importance of morality.

This was the first reggae song to get prominent airplay on major American radio stations. It was first played by Frankie Crocker at the New York radio station WBLS. Thanks to this airplay, the song became one of the Wailers' most successful hits and was later used in several films, including I Love You to Death, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Blue Crush, 50 First Dates and Fool's Gold.

While it's hard to be sure exactly what this song is about, use of the cuica in the beginning of the song - the other instrument in the intro that's not the guitar - lends credibility to the theory that the song has something to do with Brazil. The cuica, or "friction drum" is a Brazilian instrument.

Marley wrote this song with hit potential in mind. He wanted to break into the American market ahead of a big tour that took him into the States (this Uprising tour was his last). He figured that his Reggae music would not be easily accepted among mainstream black audiences, so he wrote this song with a faster, almost Disco beat.

The first single released by Kid Ink after signing to RCA features a hook and bridge by his labelmate Chris Brown. Kid Ink has something of a long-standing connection to Breezy as the pair look so much alike that they've often been mistaken for blood relatives. According to Ink its been a comparison that he's been getting since high school.

DJ Mustard's beat is a bubbling Trap instrumental, which also contains a sample of Robin S.'s 1993 hit "Show Me Love." The Californian producer is best known for his work on such hits as Tyga's "Rack City" and 2 Chainz's "I'm Different."

The Chris Brown-directed video is set in a lively house party. Breezy also co-stars in the clip with Kid Ink, which features cameos from pro skate stars Nyjah Huston, Terry Kennedy, Fuzzy and Stevie Williams.

The chorus was written and originally performed by West Coast singer TeeFlii.

DJ Mustard came up with the idea for the beat while overseas. "We went to Germany, and I was hanging out with some DJ... he was like, 'You should tap into the house music,'" the producer recalled to MTV News.

"So many people was copying my style, and I was kind of like, 'Damn, where do I go? What do I do now?,'" the producer added. "When I got back to L.A., I found that sound [on "Show Me"]. So, my lil bro, his name's Mike Lee, he's signed to me as a producer, he came up with the [melody]. He came with that, and I did the drums, and I gave it to Kid Ink. Then I called TeeFlii, and TeeFlii wrote that and killed it, then gave it to Chris, and it just went crazy from there."

This Trip-Hoppy song finds M.I.A. sampling the Weeknd's vocals from "Lonely Star," a track from the R&B singer-songwriter's mixtape Thursday. The Sri Lanka native told MTV News that she tapped his producer Doc McKinney to nail down the proper sound. "When I first heard ['Lonely Star'], I wanted to make a remix version but then the song grew," she said. "I sang on top of the song, but when I heard it back it didn't really make sense as a remix so it [became a] totally different concept, and then it grew into a full song."

M.I.A. reprises the song later on Matangi with an alternative version titled "Sexodus."

Nickelback took some heat for the intro to this song, which sounds very similar to the Metallica riff from "The Unnamed Feeling," which was released a few months earlier.

Look Right Through

Morgan Geist is an American DJ from Wayne, New Jersey who arrived at EDM music through an interest in the electronic sound effects he noticed in progressive rock songs. He formed the house and nu-disco duo Metro Area with Darshan Jesrani in 1998 and also releases solo material under the name of Storm Queen.

This song was first released on October 19, 2010, where it proved popular on Europe's party islands and turned into an online hit. In 2012, the Defected label issued a series of remixes, and on November 3, 2013 more remixes were released in the British Isles by the Ministry of Sound. Marc "MK" Kinchen's remix was hugely successful in the United Kingdom, where it entered at #1 on the singles chart.

Damon C. Scott (he uses his middle initial to avoid confusion with the ventriloquist Damon Scott, who won Britain's Got Talent in 2007) is the vocalist on this track. He was discovered my a producer named David Levy, who heard Scott singing on the 86th Street subway platform in New York City. Levy had him record some tracks, and later introduced Scott to Morgan Geist, who enlisted him to sing on this track and a few others.

In our interview with Scott , he explained, "I'd go over to his studio in Queens, New York, and he would pay me 50-60 bucks, and I would just sing down certain tracks."

When the remix went to #1 UK in 2013, Scott didn't know about it until he got a call from a booking agent in England, who brought him over to perform some shows. Once the song's popularity faded, Scott returned to America and once again started singing in the subway. He didn't get any royalties from the song because his vocals were a work for hire. He also didn't have any name or face recognition because he's not in the video and the track is credited to Storm Queen (he's not allowed to perform under that name). In England, he could sing this song and get lots of attention from onlookers who recognize the voice, but in America he finds himself is a tough spot as a busker with a #1 hit on another continent. Scott did also contribute vocals to DJ-producer Chris Malinchak's cuts "No Secrets" and "These Dreams."

"When I sang on 'Look Right Through' in 2010 it was just another song," Damon C. Scott told us. "It had no special significance to me and it had no special significance to him, either. I did it in two takes and I never thought it sounded the best it could have. I thought it was kind of horrible that he wanted to use that take. He said, 'Don't even worry about it. I'm just putting this stuff down. I probably won't even make back the money I'm giving you right now.' When he said that, I said, 'You know, you shouldn't think that way about the stuff I'm doing with you, because I'm on an upward trajectory. I'm someone going somewhere, so anything I do is going to be worth more than what you think in the long run.' He said, 'Okay, we'll see.'"

Kinchen admitted to Billboard magazine that when Simon Dunmore of the UK dance music label Defected approached him with an opportunity to remix the track, he wasn't convinced. "He said, 'Do you want to remix this? Jamie Jones just did a remix of it,'" Kinchen explained. "That's really why I picked the record to mix it, because Jamie did it. I don't like the original at all. The vocals are really good; the track is cool on an underground level but it wasn't my thing."

The 2012 release came with a video directed by Nils Clauss that follows both a prostitute and a man selling roses on the street. The following year, another video was made to accompany the hit remix. This one was made by Laurie Lynch of the Rokkit production company and shot at the Cadogan Hotel in Knightsbridge, London. This one finds a man in a tiger mask trying to impress the ladies with his dance moves.
