Photographs Lyrics

I’ll never know how you felt when you kissed him
I’ll never know if he made you smile
I’ll never know if you secretly think back and miss him
These things I wonder every once in a while

Honey, take down those Photographs
I need to know what’s passed is passed, oh
Tell me I’m the only one, that your two-timing days are done
That you have had your fun

When I met you, you were wild and you were free
When I met you, you were a whole lot like me
Well, we’ve both grown quite a bit
There’s some things I’d really like to forget
You won’t let me, I don’t know why you won’t let me

Honey, take down those photographs
I need to know what’s passed is passed, oh
Tell me I’m the only one, that your two-timing days are done
That you have had your fun

Take down those photographs
I need to know what’s passed is passed, oh
Tell me I’m the only one, that your two-timing days are done
That you have had your fun

Photographs
  • This is the title track from the singer-songwriter Robert Ellis' first major label release. The song finds Ellis asking his girl to take down the photos that remind him of her previous (and possibly current) lover. "It's a song about infidelity," he said in our 2013 interview.
  • Ellis took a different approach to the two sides of the Photographs album. The "A-side" contains songs with more original inspiration that he spent a long time developing. On the "B-side," which includes this track, he was writing songs in classic Bluegrass and Country traditions. This song evokes the classic Country songs by the likes of George Jones where the singer's heart is breaking.

    Settle For Nothing Lyrics

A jail cell is freedom from the pain in my home
Hatred passed on, passed on and passed on
    A world of violent rage
But it's one that I can recognize
Having never seen the color of my father's eyes
Yes, I dwell in hell, but it's a hell that I can grip
I tried to grip my family
    But I slipped

To escape from the pain in an existence mundane
I gotta nine, a sign, a set and now I gotta name

Read my writing on the wall
No-one's here to catch me when I fall
Death is on my side, suicide!

A jail cell is freedom from the pain in my home
Hatred passed on, passed on and passed on
    A world of violent rage
But it's one that I can recognize
Having never seen the color of my father's eyes
Yes, I dwell in hell, but it's a hell that I can grip
I tried to grip my family
    But I slipped

To escape from the pain in an existence mundane
I gotta nine, a sign, a set and now I gotta name

Read my writing on the wall
No-one's here to catch me when I fall
Caught between my culture and the system, genocide!

Read my writing on the wall
No-one's here to catch me when I fall
If ignorance is bliss, then knock the smile off my face
    Yeah!

If we don't take action now
    We Settle For Nothing later
    Settle for nothing now
And we'll settle for nothing later
If we don't take action now
    We settle for nothing later
    We'll settle for nothing now
And we'll settle for nothing later

If we don't take action now
    We'll settle for nothing later
    We settle for nothing now
And we'll settle for nothing later
If we don't take action now
    We settle for nothing later

    Slow Suicide Lyrics

    I'm not evil
No matter what you think of me
    I'm just human
There's a part of you that's just like me

    I have fallen
    I have broken every piece
    Heard heaven calling
I could only reach this from my knees
    And now I believe

    [Chorus]
I can't let this life pass me by
In a blink of an eye it ends
I can't let my tomorrows decide
What I am in this life
    It's like committing Slow Suicide

    It's no secret
    I can't pretend, I can't forget
    What I've done
Every day I live with the consequences
I let it beat me, let it kick me, let it throw me to the floor
    Those days are over
    I'm moving forward
    It can't hurt me
    And now I believe

    [Chorus]
I can't let this life pass me by
In a blink of an eye it ends
I can't let my tomorrows decide
What I am in this life
    It's like committing slow suicide

So many days I chose to suffer, living a lie
So many ways I chose to die
Oh, had to feel less than nothing
    Shame and suffering
To see with my own eyes
    I wasn't living
    I was committing
    Committing slow suicide
    Committing slow suicide

    And now I believe

    [Chorus]
I can't let this life pass me by
In a blink of an eye it ends
I can't let my tomorrows decide
What I am in this life
    It's like committing slow suicide

    Slow Suicide
  • Scott Stapp's slow suicide was his self-destructive behavior in the years after Creed became one of the most successful bands in America. He became dependent on drugs and alcohol, culminating in a 40-foot fall from a hotel room in Miami after a bout of paranoia.

The first track on his second solo album, it finds Stapp looking back on this time and putting it behind him.
  • In our 2013 interview with Scott Stapp , he said that the Proof of Life album was his best body of work. Said Stapp: "I'm the most content that I've ever been in my 40 years on this Earth and the happiest and the most full of just peace and joy than I've ever been. And I think life reflects art, art reflects life. Just being able to make a record from an organic place, from a place of inspiration and a place free of any negativity or any forcing, brought out the best in me as an artist."
  • Stapp was encouraged by his producer Howard Benson to simplify and clarify his lyrical ideas for Proof of Life. He explained: "I've always been heavy on metaphor and symbols, even to where I might hide behind fanciful language. Howard helped me get straight to the point."

Stapp's new approach to writing lyrics is highlighted on this song. "The point is that for years I was slowly killing myself," he said. "Drugs and booze want to kill you instantly, but they're patient and will take their time. The same is true of toxic relationships. I had to start off this story by declaring the most obvious of truths: that I had been torturing and poisoning myself in an attempt to snuff out my soul."
  • The song's music video was directed by Andrew Gant and shot in an old abandoned Los Angeles hospital. The clip draws from real life. "It's an autobiography exactly as it happened," admitted Stapp to Fuse TV. "There's no embellishment; if anything, it's toned down from reality. It was a real cathartic experience. I got to see what alcohol and drugs did to me, but I got to see it from a clear place shooting this video. I got to sit back and say, 'My god, my wife and my family were in the hospital and I looked like that [in real life].' The other scenarios were all me bringing closure to my life."
  • Stapp told the story of the song to Artist Direct : "I was with a friend of mine named Scott Stevens, formerly of The Exies, a rock band out of Los Angeles. We were jamming and sitting around with acoustic guitars. Nothing had been written for my record. I was thinking of how I wanted this album to start. I wanted to come right out at the top and address, for my perspective, honestly, what I had been doing to myself for a period of years. I wanted to open the door in the chorus to the realization that had brought me out of it. It was a way for me to confront the detractors with truth and honesty about myself and also tell my fans, 'Hey, if you've ever had any questions, this is what's been going on!'"

    War Within A Breath
  • "It's land or death" is a phrase that emphasizes that land, for the agrarian cultures of Chiapas, Mexico, is life - sustained by relationships with supernatural forces, and nurtured in communal and familial rituals. Land is the essential part of being, and is worked, cared for, and ritualized in a cultural, symbolic, and matter-of-survival context. When the Mexican government "changed" article 27 of the Constitution, eliminating community property, they also eliminated the people, dividing them into pieces, families, or individuals, and privatizing the land. If the Zapatistas don't take arms and fight for land - they face death.

    Perfume Lyrics

Do I imagine it, or do I see your stare
    Is there still longing there?
Oh I hate myself, and I feel crazy
    Such a classic tale
Current girl friend, ex girlfriend, I'm trying to be cool
Am I being paranoid, am I seeing things?
    Am I just insecure?

    I want to believe
    It's just you and me
Sometimes it feels like there's three
    Of us in here baby

So I, wait for you to call
And I try to act natural
Have you been thinking 'bout her about me
    And while I wait
I put on my Perfume, yeah I want it all over you
    I'm gonna mark my territory

I'll never tell, tell on myself but I hope she smells my perfume
I'll never tell, tell on myself but I hope she smells my perfume
I hide it well, hope you can tell but I hope she smells my perfume
I hide it well, hope you can tell but I hope she smells my perfume

I wanna fill the room, when she's in it with you
    Please don't forget me
Do I imagine it, or catch these moments
    I know you got history

But I'm your girlfriend, now I'm your girlfriend
    Trying to be cool
I hope I'm paranoid, that I'm just seeing things
    That I'm just insecure

    I want to believe
    It's just you and me
Sometimes it feels like there's three
    Of us in here baby

So I, wait for you to call
And I try to act natural
Have you been thinking 'bout her, about me
    And while I wait
I put on my perfume, yeah I want it all over you
    I'm gonna mark my territory

So I, wait for you to call

    Perfume
  • This ballad was penned by Britney Spears with the Australian singer-songwriter Sia, who has also co-written hits for David Guetta ("Titanium"), Flo Rida ("Wild Ones") and Rihanna ("Diamonds"). Speaking with Alan Carr on his Chatty Man talk show, Britney explained: "It's about a girl that knows her boyfriend is cheating on her. She just wants him to smell her perfume so she can mark her territory on him; it's a really beautiful song."
  • Britney told E! Online about the song. "'Perfume' is incredibly special to me because it hits close to home, and I think the story is relatable to everyone," she said. "Everyone's been through an insecure moment in a relationship that's left them vulnerable and I think this song captures that."
  • The song was co-produced by Black Eyed Peas' leader, Will.i.am and English singer-songwriter Chris Braide. The latter previously worked with Clay Aiken on his US #1 hit "This Is The Night," Christina Aguilera on her Lotus track "Blank Page" and Lana Del Rey on her Born To Die cut, "Millionaire Dollar Man."
  • This song is synthesizer-free and full of emotion. "We wanted to treat her vocal as the main character of the song," said Will.i.am at Britney Jean's listening party.
  • Here's some perfume trivia:

The earliest form of perfume was incense, which gives off its odor when burned. (The word perfume is derived from the Latin per fumum, meaning "through smoke.")

The earliest use of perfume bottles is Egyptian and dates to around 1000 BC.

Perfume was an integral part of Greek society, even though some of the greatest philosophers like Socrates thought them "effeminate". Scents were designed to clear the mind, cure illness, and win true love.

Chanel No 5 perfume was named because Coco Chanel had rejected the first four fragrances presented to her.

60 years ago there were just 19 perfumes on sale to the public. Now a new fragrance is launched every three days at an average cost of $40-50 million.

Two fragrances are included in almost every perfume - the extracts of rose and jasmine flowers.
  • The song's fragrance-heavy music video was directed by Joseph Kahn, who previously directed Spears' clips for "Stronger," "Toxic," and "Womanizer." The storyline has Britney caught in a love triangle and as well as the shots of the singer with her love interest, there is plenty of product placement for her perfume, Fantasy.

Britney's 'womanizer' beau is played by model Alexander Kjellevik. The Norwegian hunk has starred in campaigns for various designers including Emporio Armani, John Varvatos and Ermanno Scervino.

The official video is a far cry from Kahn's unseen director's cut, which follows Britney as an assassin who sacrifices herself when her next target turns out to be the man she loves. Kahn told Video Static :

"It sucks, especially since my director's cut is an entirely different video. The released edit is missing half of the story and all of the editorial structure. It took a lot of serious salvaging of footage to get it to an acceptable place after the concept was gutted. It's like watching people pet a shaved, bald, declawed cat. I don't gain any satisfaction from people liking work I did that's heavily compromised. I need to stand behind the work honestly otherwise I feel like a fraud. I guess people still like the video because of the gritty look which feels different, and the twist of the second girl in the second act. A narrative in two identical parts is still a solid idea even in compromised form. But it's such a faint reflection of the real narrative with broken execution and far less ambition. If they liked the weak version, I'd bet they'd love the strong one. No one knows what they're missing, and they're missing a lot."

  • This is about capitalism and how it negatively affects the poor working class. Lyrics like "Old south order, new northern horizon" are in reference to large corporations that make you think they have great positive ideals and practices when in actuality they have the same slave owning way of thinking of the old American south. The title New Millennium Homes could be a slightly sarcastic way of saying so called charity is a fraud to make you believe something is being done about the problem of poverty.

    Awake Lyrics

    Awake
  • The Canadian rocker Devin Townsend first cut his chops as lead singer for Steve Vai 's band in 1993. He has since released a series of albums under his own name, with his group Strapping Young Lad, and as Devin Townsend Project. This song comes from the second Devin Townsend Project album. In our interview with Townsend, he told us the story behind it:

"Awake" was a dream. I often go through periods where songs appear in dreams and scenarios appear in dreams, and I wake up in the middle of the night sort of humming the melody and then recognize it: "Oh, wow, that's something that is new." And if I'm prepared enough and aware enough, I can scramble out of bed and jot it down. A fair amount from my back catalogue that is written in that sense, and "Awake" was one of them. That whole rhythm was from this dream, and I just woke up singing the melody. I mumbled it into my iPhone and emailed it to myself and fell back asleep. When I woke up and listened to the email, I was like, "Oh, that's actually not that bad." So I wrote that one down.

Lyrically, it was about that period of time where my process was changing from writing like a stoner to writing like a dad. The slant I was trying to go for lyrically was about taking your head out of the smog that it had been in for a certain period of time and recognizing what could potentially be there.

    By Your Command Lyrics

    By Your Command
  • A confluence of science fiction and heavy metal, this track from the Canadian singer/guitarist Devin Townsend runs 8:10, and is often a showstopper at his concerts.

"By Your Command" is a saying used in the Battlestar Galactica TV series, which ran from 1979-1980. It was often uttered by the bad guys when accepting orders from their evil overlords. Townsend was a big fan of the show, and integrated it into his Ziltoid project, where he creates his own alien character. "There's that sort of outer space thing that seemed to make sense," he told us. "But really it was a reference back to drugs, and that whole record was a reference to drugs in some sense - that you are unconsciously motivated to go in directions that are either contrary to your nature or maybe not the most accurate representation of where your conscious mind is. Sort of being on autopilot or being a channel to things that ultimately are going to cause you difficulty.

So 'By Your Command' had that as an undercurrent, but on the surface it was the introduction to this ridiculous story that the Ziltoid record actually was." (Here's the full Devin Townsend interview .)

    That Baghdad is burning
Your voice it is so soothing
    That cunning mantra of killing
    I need you my witness
To dress this up so bloodless
To numb me and purge me now
    Of thoughts of blaming you
Yes the car is our wheelchair
    My witness your coughing
    Oily silence mocks the legless
Ones who travel now in coffins
    On the corner
    The jury's sleepless
    We found your weakness
And it's right outside our door
    Now Testify

    Now testify
    It's right outside our door
    Now testify
    Yes testify
    It's right outside our door

    With precision you feed me
    My witness I'm hungry
    Your temple it calms me
    So I can carry on
My slaving sweating the skin right off my bones
On a bed of fire I'm choking on the smoke that fills my home
    The wrecking ball is rushing
    Witness your blushing
    The pipeline is gushing
While here we lie in tombs
    While on the corner
    The jury's sleepless
    We found your weakness
And it's right outside your door
    Now testify

    Testify
  • This song is about misrepresentation of world events by the US media. News anchors relay lies into the homes of Americans because that's all the Americans, being empty people whose only concerns are the media's showcase of glamour and gossip, can handle. The only way for people to survive is through the opiates that they partake of every day in the form of celebrities and media. It uses the party slogan for the Oceania government in the book 1984: "Who controls the past, controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past."
  • Some lyrical analysis:
"We found your weakness and it's right outside your door, now testify" - In the first part, Zack is trying to be coy about saying what he thinks the government's weakness really is. So think about it this way, what's right outside your door? The world and all the people in it. And if all those people would come together, what powerful tool of revolution we would be?
"Mass graves for the pump and the price is set" - For the mass graves part, Zack is referring to oil. In the middle eastern countries, the battle is for oil, and how that's the real cause for America's involvement over there. We want our oil supply safe, so we try to be a mediator and police officer for those countries. Mass graves? People in war die. That's what it's all about - so basically, there's all this fighting that we participate in to secure oil. You "pump" gas, and the price constantly goes up and down with middle eastern crises.
"Who controls the past now controls the future
Who controls the present now controls the past
Who controls the past now controls the future
Who controls the present now?" - In the last part, Zack is saying that whoever is in charge now, is still, has been, and always will be, in charge. Then he asks who's controlling everything now. Almost asking if we really want it this way, or if we're going to do something to change it.

    So Far... Lyrics

I own a mansion, but live in a house
A king-size bed, but I sleep on the couch
I'm Mr.Brightside, glass is half full
But my tank is half empty, gasket just blew

This always happens, thirty minutes from home
Gotta lay a log cabin and only option I have is McDonald's bathroom
In a public stall dropping a football
So every time someone walks in the john I get Madden
''Shady, what up?''- What? Come on, man, I'm crapping
And you're asking me for my got damn autograph on a napkin?
Oh, that's odd, I just happened to run out of tissue
Yeah, hand me that, on second thought I'd be glad then
''Thanks, dawg, name's Todd, a big fan''
I wiped my ass with it, crumbled it up in a wad and threw it back and
Told him ''Todd, you're the shit'' when does all of this crap end?
Can't park my ass without causing an accident
Puff my gas, cut my grass, can't take out the fucking trash
Without someone passing through my sub harassing
I'd count my blessings, but I suck at math
I'd rather wallow then bass suffering from succotash
But the antacid is my stomach gas
I mix my corn with my fucking mash
Potato, so what, ho, kiss my country bumpkin ass
Missouri Southern roots, what the fuck is upperclass
Call lunch dinner, call dinner supper
Tupperware in a covered plastic wear up the ass
Stuck in the past, iPod, what the fuck is that?
B-boy to the core, mule, I'm a stubborn ass

Maybe that's why I feel so strange
Got it all, but I still won't change
    Maybe that's why I can't leave Detroit
It's the motivation that keeps me going
This is the inspiration I need
I can never turn my back on a city that made me
(Life's been good to me so far)

They call me classless, I heard that, I second and third that
Don't know what the fuck I would doing if it weren't rap
    Probably be a giant turd-sack
But I blew, never turned back
    Turned forty and still sag
Teenagers act more fucking mature, Jack
Fuck you gonna say to me?
I leave on my own terms, asshole, I'm going berzerk
My nerves are bad, but I love the perks my work has
I get to meet famous people, look at her, dag
Her nylons ran, her skirt snag
And I heard she drag-races, *burp* swag
    Fucking my Hanes shirt tag
You're Danica Patrick (yeah) work, skag
    We'd be the perfect match
    'Cause you're a vacuum, I'm a dirtbag
My apologies, no disrespect to technology
But what the heck is all of these buttons?
You expect me to sit here and learn that?
Fuck I gotta do to hear this new song from Luda?
    Be an expert at computers?
I'd rather be an encyclopedia Britannica, hell with a Playstation
I'm still on my first manual from Zelda
Nintendo, bitch, run, jump, punch, stab and I melt the
Mozzarella on my spaghetti, put in on bread
Make a sandwich with welch's and belch
They say this spray butter is bad for my health, but
I think there's more white trash from the trailer
Jed Clampett, Redd Sanford welfare mentality helps to
Keep me grounded, that's why I never take full advantage of wealth, I
Managed to dwell within these parameters
Still cramming the shelves full of hamburger helper
I can't even help it, this is the hand I was dealt to
Creature of habit, feel like I'm trapped in an animal shelter
    With all these pet peeves
God dammit to hell, I can't stand all these kids with their camera cellphones
I can't go anywhere, I get so mad I can yell, the
Other day someone got little elaborate and stuck a fucking dead cat in my mailbox
Went to Burger King, they spit on my onion rings
I think my karma is catching up with me

Maybe that's why I feel so strange
Got it all, but I still won't change
    Maybe that's why I can't leave Detroit
It's the motivation that keeps me going
This is the inspiration I need
I can never turn my back on a city that made me
(Life's been good to me so far)

Got friends on Facebook, all over the world
Not sure what that means, they tell me it's good
So I'm artist of the decade, I even got a plaque
I'd hang it up, but the frame is all cracked

I'm trying to be lowkey, hopefully nobody notices me
In produce hunched over, giant nosebleed
Over stop as I mosey over to the frozen aisle
By the frozen yogurt this guy approached me
Embarrassed, I just did Comerica with Hova
Show's over, I'm hiding in Kroeger buying groceries
He just had front row seats, told me to sign this poster
Then insults me "wow, up close didn't know you had crow's feet"
I'm at a crossroad lost till shopping at Costco
    Sloppy Joe's, buck waffles
Got caught picking my nose, ah
Look over see these two hot hoes
Finger still up in one of my nostrils
Right next to 'em stuck at the light
This fucking shit is taking forever to change
I'm stuck, these bitches are loving it rubbing it in
Chuckling, couldn't do nothing, play it off
''What you bumping? Trunk Muzik? Yelawolf's better'', fucking bitch
They want me to flip at the label, but I won't succumb to it
The pressure, they want me to follow up with another one after Recovery
Was so highly coveted, but what good is a fucking recovery if I fumble it?
'Cause I'mma drop the ball if I don't get a grip
Hopping on shrubbery on you sons of bitches
Wrong subdivison to fuck with, bitch
Quit snapping fucking pictures of my kids
I love my city, but you push me to my limit, what a pity
    The shit I complain about
It's like there ain't a cloud in the sky and it's raining out
Kool Aid stain on the couch, I'd never get it out
Bitch, I got an elevator in my house
Ants and a mouse, I'm living the dream

Maybe that's why I feel so strange
Got it all, but I still won't change
    Maybe that's why I can't leave Detroit
It's the motivation that keeps me going
This is the inspiration I need
I can never turn my back on a city that made me
(Life's been good to me so far)

    So Far...
  • This song finds Eminem talking about his lack of technical knowledge as he sounds off about how many buttons there are on a PlayStation controller and how complicated it is to download a Ludacris song. "What the f--k I got to do to hear this new song from Luda? Be an expert at computers?" he complains. Slim also questions why he is so bad with Facebook ("Got friends on Facebook, all over the world. Not sure what that means, they tell me it's good").

Speaking during a Q&A session at SiriusXM's Town Hall, Eminem said his anger would probably get the best of him if he ended up getting into an argument on social media, which is why he tends to stay away from it. "I would get into the worst arguments like 'Drive to my house now!'" he explained.
  • The Rick Rubin produced song features southern Blues-Rock instrumentation and samples Joe Walsh's 1978 solo hit, "Life's Been Good." Speaking with BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, Eminem said that he wanted the legendary producer to create sounds for TMMLP2 that were "subliminally nostalgic." He added: "Not blatant.. so that it kind of reminded you of 13 years ago when you first heard me but it's over beats that are older. To create a feel. We started messing with old beats and samples. Rick is talented in every different of genre in music. I was hoping to get what I got from him."
  • The lyric, "Went to Burger King, they spit on my onion rings. I think my karma is catching up with me" is a reworking of a classic line from "The Real Slim Shady" ("And every single person is a Slim Shady lurking. He could be working at Burger King, spitting on your onion rings").
  • The song finds Eminem referencing Detroit's troubles and how he feels that no matter what happens to the Motor City, he has its back. Speaking to BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, the MC spoke of his love for his hometown. "I feel like we've always been the underdog… I've kept that with me. That fighting spirit that Detroit has," he shared. "Because Detroit is so resilient. I feel like people there have this Detroit versus everybody mentality, because the way people look at us, they always count us out. I know that attitude is displayed a lot in my music, but I think that is where it comes from."

    It's A Shame Lyrics

It's A Shame, the way you mess around with your man
It's a shame the way you hurt me
It's a shame, the way you mess around with your man
I'm sitting all alone, by my telephone
Waiting for your call, when you don't call at all

It's a shame (shame) the way you mess around with your man
It's a shame (shame) the way you play with my emotions
It's a shame (shame) the way you mess around with your man
You're like a child at play, on a sunny day
But you play with love, and then you throw it away

(Why do you use me, try to confuse me
How can you stand, to be so cruel
Why don't you free me, from this prison
Where I serve my time as your fool)

It's a shame (shame) the way you mess around with your man
It's a shame (shame) the way you hurt me
It's a shame (shame) the way you mess around with your man
I try to stay with you, show you love so true
But you won't appreciate, the love we try to make

Oh, it's got to be a shame

Why do you use me, try to confuse me
How can you stand, to be so cruel
Why don't you free me, from this prison
Where I serve my time as your fool

Got to be a shame (shame) the way you mess around with your man
Oh, it's a shame (shame) the way you hurt me
It's a shame (shame) babe babe, the way you mess with your man
You've got my heart in chains, and I must complain
And I just can't be confined, oh look my ooh my

    So gotta be a shame
The way it hurt me eh eh

  • G.C. Cameron had joined the band as lead singer at the time of this song's initial release. In 1972, The Spinners switched record labels and moved from Motown to Atlantic.
