Recovery Lyrics

Recovery
  • This somber acoustic R&B tune finds Justin crooning about wanting to make up with a girl who holds a special place in his heart. The song was released as the fourth promotional single from the Canadian star's #MusicMondays series, a 10-week drive in which he unveiled a new tune every Sunday at midnight. "It's here. One of the most important songs to me I've ever written. #Recovery. Hope it helps you! (sic)" Justin tweeted after dropping the cut.
  • The acoustic-backed instrumental samples Craig David's 2000 hit "Fill Me In." The British singer was pleased that Justin had sampled one of his old tunes. "So many great memories flood back when hearing this guitar riff," he tweeted. "Well done @justinbieber sounding great."
  • The song specifically details the dissolution of a relationship, and in a tweet explaining its meaning Justin hinted that his ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, was the inspiration behind the tune. "Recovery is an acknowledgement that in life you can't just fall down and not get over things. You have to step up and recover," he tweeted.

"At the time, I was going through a very hard break up and when you're going through stuff like that you think that the world is just gonna end. Then you wake up the next day and realize that life has to go on."

He added: "Recovery is that feeling you get when you start to move on and make things better for yourself because yesterday is gone and tomorrow is here."

    The Dreaming Lyrics

    'Bang!' goes another kanga
On the bonnet of the van.
"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."
Many an Aborigine's mistaken for a tree
'Til you near him on the motorway
And the tree begin to breathe.
"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."

    ("Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha")

Coming in with the golden light
    In the morning.
Coming in with the golden light
    Is the New Man.
Coming in with the golden light
    Is my dented van.

    Woomera.

    "Dree-ee-ee-ee-ee-
    A-a-a-a-a-
    M-m-m-m-m-
    Ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-
    I-i-i-i-i-
    Me-me-me-me-me,"

    "Dree-ee-ee-ee-ee-"
    Woomera.
    "A-a-a-a-a-
    M-m-m-m-m-
    Ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-
    I-i-i-i-i-
    Me-me-me-me-me.

    "Dree-ee-ee-ee-ee-
    A-a-a-a-a-
    M-m-m-m-m-
    Ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-"

    The civilized keep alive
    The territorial war.
"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."
Erase the race that claim the place
And say we dig for ore,
Or dangle devils in a bottle
And push them from the Pull of the Bush.
"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."
You find them in the road.
"See the light bounce off the rocks to the sand."
    In the road.

Coming in with the golden light
    In the morning.
Coming in with the golden light
    With no warning.
Coming in with the golden light
    We bring in the rigging.
    Dig, dig, dig, dig away.

    "Dree-ee-ee-ee-ee-
    A-a-a-a-a-
    M-m-m-m-m-
    Ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-
    I-i-i-i-i-
    Me-me-me-me-me,"

    "Dree-ee-ee-ee-ee-"
    Woomera.

    The Dreaming
  • Bush wrote this about the situation between the white Australians and the aborigines who were being wiped out by man's greed for uranium. White men were digging up aboriginal sacred grounds to get to the plutonium needed to build weapons that could one day destroy everything.
  • The title comes from a religious period of time in the aboriginal culture known as Dreamtime, a time when animals and humans take the same form. Dreamtime is also known as The Dreaming.
  • Traditional aboriginal instruments were used on this song.
  • The Dreaming was Bush's first completely solo produced album.

    Story of My Life Lyrics

Written in these walls are the stories that I can't explain
I leave my heart open but it stays right here empty for days

She told me in the morning
She don't feel the same about us in her bones
It seems to me that when I die
These words will be written on my stone

And I'll be gone, gone tonight
The ground beneath my feet is open wide
The way that I've been holdin' on too tight
    With nothing in between

The Story of My Life, I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm and time
Is frozen (the story of, the story of)
The story of my life, I give her hope
I spend her love until she's broke, inside
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

    Written on these walls are
The colors that I can't change
    Leave my heart open
But it stays right here in its cage

I know that in the morning now
I see ascending light upon a hill
Although I am broken, my heart is untamed, still

And I'll be gone, gone tonight
The fire beneath my feet is burning bright
The way that I've been holdin' on so tight
    With nothing in between

The story of my life, I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm and time
Is frozen (the story of, the story of)
The story of my life, I give her hope
I spend her love until she's broke, inside
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

And I've been waiting for this time to come around
But baby running after you is like chasing the clouds

    The story of my life
    I take her home
    I drive all night
To keep her warm and time
    Is frozen

The story of my life I give her hope (give her hope)
I spend her love until she's broke (until she's broke inside)
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

    The story of my life
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)
    The story of my life

    Story of My Life
  • This guitar-led ballad finds One Direction singing of a girl who broke their hearts. It was co-written by Jamie Scott, who also co-penned the Up All Night tracks, "More Than This" and "Stole My Heart" as well as the Take Me Home tunes "C'mon C'mon" and "She's Not Afraid." The British singer-songwriter's other credits include Enrique Iglesias' "Heartbeat", Michael Kiwanuka's "Home Again" and Matt Cardle's "Loving You."
  • Niall Horan recalled the first time Scott played them the song during an interview with UK radio station Capital FM. "We were in Nottingham on tour when we were touring the UK back in February and March," he recalled, "and we just came into a room one day and he was like, 'I've got this song that I've written and I want to play [it for] you.' And we just fell in love with it the second we heard it."
  • The One Direction guys contributed to the lyrics whilst "Best Song Ever" collaborators John Ryan and Julian Bunetta produced the tune. Scott recalled to MTV News that as soon as 1D heard his demo, "they freaked out and finished the song with us. It's always good to have their kind of input on lyrics and stuff just to make sure they're really singing what they're singing about."
  • The song is more folk-orientated than most of One Direction's previous offerings, but Scott told MTV News the quintet have the talent to pull it off. "It's not that hard a thing to do because the boys have really good voices, they've all got very different voices. Harry [Styles'] rasp is something that you can always lean towards... All the boys have such a great sound themselves," he said. "For instance the demo that we played the boys sounds a lot more folky than it does now. That's what amazing about their voices [when they record it] straight away it sounds like them."
  • With five vocalists, One Direction was well-suited for the huge chorus in this song, which is the focal point. The song opens with a guitar figure that continues under the first verse. There is a big change in intensity going from the verse to the chorus, and a cymbal swell acts as a transition.

After the first chorus, the drumbeat continues through the second verse. After the second chorus, the song breaks down with just acoustic guitar and vocal ("And I'll be waiting for this time..."), which serves as the bridge. After the third chorus, the song resolves with the music coming out, leaving the last line - the title of the song - bare.
  • The music video was directed by Ben Winston, who also helmed the clip for One Direction's previous single "Best Song Ever." The visual features the guys gazing at old family photographs and literally re-living the memories hey contain. We get to see: Zayn's sister, Niall's brother, Liam's parents and sisters Harry's mother and Louis' grandparents. The latter is an especially poignant scene as two of the folks in the picture are no longer with us, and in a moving moment, they fade and disappear before the recreation takes place.
  • This is the only track on Midnight Memories to be co-written by all five One Directioners, however all but two songs on the album bears the name of at least a single band member in the credits.

    Octavo Dia Lyrics

    A Bill Clinton o a Tarzan

    Rough Water Lyrics

Hey oh, never let go of me
Hold tight, it’s gonna get hard to breathe (Hold tight baby)
Never never let you drown, even if we’re going down
Hey oh, never let go of me
    When I’m sinking

Loose lips sink ships that’s what someone told me
But this boat will stay afloat for as long as you hold me
We been through Rough Water anytime it was tougher
But the fact I came back to remind you I love ya
And if that’s not enough, well I can one up ya
I pinky promise touch thumbs I’ll never make you suffer
And all I ask in return is some reciprocation
I’ll be your oxygen when you’re running out of patience

So take a deep breath, and hold it tight
My heart is yours just reassure me that you’ll hold it right
Don’t be offended, I’m just the cautious type
To always be around and hold you down and never under, like

Hey oh, never let go of me (Never let go)
Hold tight, it’s gonna get hard to breathe (Hold tight baby, hold tight)
Never never let you drown (never), even if we’re going down (Going down)
Hey oh, never let go of me
    When I’m sinking

Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh, oh

This is my message in a bottle, I hope that you receive it
If it washes up at your feet then open it and read it
To whom it may concern, insert your name here
It’s destiny that we were both born in the same year
Three months apart, but on the same sphere
Staring at the sun, inhaling the same air
This type of love we got, they’ll never get it
I’ll be the Leo DiCaprio to your Kate Winslet
Sometimes I panic but I never take it for granted
I’ll hold you ‘til my lips turn blue like Jack in Titanic
And if I lose my grip, then just promise me this
You’ll keep my love in a locket and always rock it, like

Hey oh, never let go of me (Never let go, never let go)
Hold tight, it’s gonna get hard to breathe (Hold tight mama, hold tight)
Never never let you drown (never), even if we’re going down (Going down)
Hey oh, never let go of me
    When I’m sinking

Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh, oh

    There’s times where like
    We find it hard
    To hold on to something
That was never meant to be held onto
    But you let it go
If it comes back it was meant to be
If not, just let it be, c’mon

Hey oh, never let go of me (Never let go, never let go)
Hold tight, it’s gonna get hard to breathe (Hold tight mama, hold tight)
Never never let you drown (never), even if we’re going down (Going down)
Hey oh, never let go of me
    When I’m sinking

Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh, oh

    Rough Water
  • This Jason Mraz featuring song finds McCoy teaming up with producer Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, Wiz Khalifa), whom he previously worked with on Gym Class Heroes' 2011 hit, "Stereo Hearts." "To be completely honest," Travie explained during an interview with 92.3 NOW night host DJ Toros, "the song was written a while ago, with Benny Blanco, and was just kind of floating around. He was working with Jason… he dug it… laid some guitars on it, re-sang the hook and totally breathed new air into it and gave it a whole new life."
  • The video, filmed on the streets of New York City, was inspired by the movie Inception. "When I first saw that movie I was like, 'wow this is genius,'" he said, "and then when I saw the final cut of this video I was like, 'dope!'"
  • McCoy penned this about a fiery former lover. He explained to MTV News: "It was a song I wrote about my ex-girlfriend, who I'm still actually really cool with. I've always kind of avoided confrontation. And this relationship, she was French so it was kind of a language barrier... but whenever confrontation would arise I would just like leave the room and let her simmer down. And then I realized that that wasn't really helping things. I started actually listening to her."
  • The song's lyrics mention Titanic as the film means a lot to McCoy's ex. "I put [the Titanic references] in there for a reason because that was a movie we used to watch together," he told Radio.com . "I actually told her, if I was in that situation I would hold on to her until I couldn't anymore. The first time I got the song back I sent it to her and she called me crying."
  • The song was inspired by a rough patch with McCoy's former girlfriend. He told Billboard magazine that it, "sat on the back burner for awhile" until Benny Blanco played it for Mraz, who added guitar work and sang the hook. "Benny sent it to me, and I was like, 'Whoa!' " McCoy continued. "He took this thing to a whole 'nother planet. It was just fantastic. It meshed so well, so we decided to put it out there for public consumption and people are digging it, so I'm stoked."

    Sat In Your Lap Lyrics

    I see the people working,
And see it working for them.
And so I want to join in,
But then I find it hurts me.

Some say that knowledge is something Sat In Your Lap.
Some say that knowledge is something that you never have.

    I see the people happy,
So can it happen for me?
    'Cause when I am unhappy,
There's nothing that can move me.

Some say that knowledge is something that you never have.
Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap.
Some say that heaven is hell.
Some say that hell is heaven.

I must admit, just when I think I'm king,
    (I just begin.)
Just when I think I'm king, I must admit,
    (I just begin.)
Just when I think I'm king,
    (I just begin.)

I've been doing it for years.
    My goal is moving near.
It says, "Look! I'm over here."
    Then it up and disappears.

Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap.
Some say that knowledge is ho-ho-ho-ho.

I want to be a lawyer.
I want to be a scholar.
But I really can't be bothered.
Ooh, just gimme it quick, gimme it, gimme gimme gimme gimme!

Some say that knowledge is ho ho ho.
Some say that knowledge is ho ho ho.
Some say that heaven is hell.
Some say that hell is heaven.

I must admit, just when I think I'm king,
    (I just begin.)
Just when I think I'm king, I must admit,
    (I just begin.)
Just when I think everything's going great,
    (I just begin,)
    Hey, I get the break,
Hey, I'm gonna take it all--
    (I just begin.)
    When I'm king--
    (-- just begin.)

    In my dome of ivory,
    A home of activity,
    I want the answers quickly,
But I don't have no energy.

I hold a cup of wisdom,
    But there is nothing within.
    My cup, she never overfloweth,
And 'tis I that moan- and groaneth.

    Some grey and white matter,
    "Give me the karma, mama!"
    I'm coming up the ladder,
    "A jet to Mecca,"
    I'm coming up the ladder,
    "Tibet or Jeddah,
    Up the ladder...
    "To Salisbury,
    A monastery,
    The longest journey,
    Across the desert,
    Across the weather,
    Across the elements,
    Across the water!"

    Sat In Your Lap
  • This song is about the kind of people who want to have knowledge but can't be bothered to do the things they should in order to get it. It implies that the more you know, the more ignorant you realize you are; when you get over one wall, you will find an even bigger one.
  • The Dreaming was Bush's first album as a solo producer, allowing her to experiment musically in areas that were new to her.
  • The video for this song was intentionally made to be comical rather than serious. It contained images indicating lack of knowledge such as dunces and jesters.

Magic and Loss - The Summation Lyrics

When you pass through the fire, you pass through humble
you pass through a maze of self doubt
When you pass through humble, the lights can blind you
some people never figure that out

You pass through arrogance, you pass through hurt
you pass through an ever present past
And it's best not to wait for luck to save you
pass through the fire to the light

Pass through the fire to the light
pass through the fire to the light
It's best not to wait for luck to save you
pass through the fire to the light

As you pass through the fire, your right hand waving
there are things you have to throw out
That caustic dread inside your head
    will never help you out

You have to be very strong, 'cause you'll start from zero
    over and over again
And as the smoke clears there's an all consuming fire
    lying straight ahead

    Lying straight ahead
    lying straight ahead
As the smoke clears there's an all consuming fire
    lying straight ahead

They say no one person can do it all
but you want to in your head
But you can't be Shakespeare and you can't be Joyce
    so what is left instead

You're stuck with yourself and a rage that can hurt you
you have to start at the beginning again
And just this moment this wonderful fire
    started up again

When you pass through humble, when you pass through sickly
when you pass through I'm better than you all
When you pass through anger and self deprecation
and have the strength to acknowledge it all

When the past makes you laugh and you can savor the magic
that let you survive your own war
You find that that fire is passion
and there's a door up ahead not a wall

As you pass through fire as you pass through fire
    trying to remember its name
When you pass through fire licking at your lips
    you cannot remain the same

And if the building's burning move towards that door
but don't put the flames out
There's a bit of magic in everything
and then some loss to even things out

Some loss to even things out
some loss to even things out
There's a bit of magic in everything
and then some loss to even things out

Magic and Loss - The Summation
  • The Magic and Loss concept album sprung from tragedy in Reed's life. He had lost two close friends to cancer and struggled to understand the nature of life in death. By the end of the 2-disc album, closed out by the title song, he didn't find any answers, but he found a bit of hope. He told The Guardian: "At the end of Magic and Loss it's kinda: well, where do you go from here? And the thing was to try to explain well, there's magic in this life as well as loss. There is a balance, even if it's sometimes very, very difficult to see. Something terrible happens - makes no sense - but out of that years from then you might see something positive did emerge..."
  • This song is credited to both Reed and guitarist Mike Rathke, who also co-produced the album.

Adore you and want you so
I'm just a no one with nothing to give you but, oh
    I love you

    He, he buys you diamonds
    Bright, sparkling diamonds
But, believe me, dear, when I say
That he can give you the world but he'll never love the way
    I love you

He can take you any place he wants
    To fancy clubs and restaurants
But I can only watch you with
My nose pressed up against the window pane

    I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Must watch you go dancing by
Wrapped in the arms of somebody else when, darling, it's I
    Who loves you

    I love you
    I love you
    I love you

    I Who Have Nothing
  • This song about unrequited love is featured on The Sopranos soundtrack.
  • The song's melody was based on an Italian song, "Uno Dei Tanti," (English: "One of Many"), which King had heard in Italy. King's producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller translated the lyrics into English.
  • Other versions of King's melodramatic soul hit that reached the Billboard charts were performed by:
1966 Terry Knight and the Pack (who later became Grand Funk Railroad) in 1966 (#46).
    1970 Liquid Smoke (#82).
    1970 Tom Jones (#14).
    1979 Sylvester (#46).
In the UK Shirley Bassey's George Martin produced version, which peaked at #6 in 1963, is the best known.
  • The song is a favorite for music based reality show contestants. American Idol contests who have performed the song include Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks in the Top 3, Season 10 contestant Haley Reinhart in the Top 4 and and season 12 winner Candice Glover in the final.
  • Some critics believe that part of the song's melody was later copied for the Moody Blues' 1967 hit "Nights In White Satin."

    Flashbulb Eyes
  • This meditation on the dangers of a high public profile features Calypso-type Ska guitar, Dubby downbeats and steel drums. It was penned during a trip that Arcade Fire took to Jamaica with producer Markus Dravs where the band wrote and recorded in an abandoned castle, named Trident. Win Butler recalled to Rolling Stone: "The castle was built in 1979, or something, by this eccentric Jamaican dude who just wanted to hang out with royalty. And it kind of worked. After about five years he couldn't afford to pay the bill, so it had been sitting empty for many years. I met a dude who was planning on turning it into a hotel, so we just rented it off him for cheap and there was nothing in there. We brought in some beds and a piano and some gear."
  • This song has been widely interpreted as a Rock Star complaining about being photographed. "I don't feel bad if Régine and I are in a restaurant and someone asks for a photo and I say 'no,'" Win Butler told Mojo magazine. "I don't feel a celebrity responsibility to not be a human. I talk to them: 'Nice to meet you.'. Sometimes I come across as a little intense to people, and it's just trying to preserve a genuine relationship, for myself."

    The Killing Moon Lyrics

Under blue moon I saw you
    So soon you'll take me
    Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
    Unwillingly mine

    Fate
    Up against your will
    Through the thick and thin
    He will wait until
    You give yourself to him

In starlit nights I saw you
    So cruelly you kissed me
    Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels
    The Killing Moon
    Will come too soon

    Fate
    Up against your will
    Through the thick and thin
    He will wait until
    You give yourself to him

Under blue moon I saw you
    So soon you'll take me
    Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
    Unwillingly mine

    Fate
    Up against your will
    Through the thick and thin
    He will wait until
    You give yourself to him
    Fate
    Up against your will
    Through the thick and thin
    He will wait until
    You give yourself to him
    You give yourself to him

    La la la la la
    Fate
    Up against your will
    Through the thick and thin
    He will wait until
    You give yourself to him

    La la la la la

    Fate
    Up against your will

    The Killing Moon
  • This was recorded at Crescent Studio in Bath, Somerset. After catching a cold, frontman Ian McCulloch completed the recording of his vocals at Amazon Studio in Liverpool, where Pete de Freitas also completed the drumming.
  • This song is the opener to the Donnie Darko movie soundtrack. Guitarist Will Sergeant recalled to The Guardian in a April 2015 interview: "Years after it was a hit, we got an email saying this bloke wanted to use the song in a film, Donnie Darko, which we didn't think would go anywhere, so accepted a one-off £3,000. Then when the director did the director's cut he replaced 'The Killing Moon' with 'Never Tear Us Apart' by INXS. Aren't some people knobheads?"
  • McCulloch told Uncut magazine issue 138: "You don't need to read The Bible, you can listen to 'The Killing Moon' and get as much out of it. It's the greatest song ever written."
  • McCulloch (from Mojo magazine March 2012): "I woke up with that lyric, 'Fate up against your will,' as if God had given it to me in my sleep. Recently I realised what it is - it's that soliloquy, 'To be or not to be' - but it's even better, because I'm f---in' singing it."
  • The song's Middle Eastern-tinged instrumentation was inspired by a vacation that bassist Les Pattinson and guitarist Will Sergeant spent in Russia. Pattinson told Uncut August 2014: "Me and Will had been in Russia for a holiday, and there was this band playing balalaikas in a hotel foyer, really cheesy cabaret. But it was fantastic and we just started messing about and the next thing is we've got a chorus for 'The Killing Moon'. It was just brilliant."

Will Sergeant added: "Adam Peters came and did cellos and double-tracked it to make it sound like an orchestra. I reversed the reverb of the autoharp going in on the chorus chords so you get a big 'whoosh' sound. I got a Vox Teardrop 12-string."
  • David Bowie inspired the song's formation: "I played David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' backwards, then started messing around with the chords," McCulloch recalled to The Guardian. "By the time I'd finished, it sounded nothing like 'Space Oddity.'"

    You Already Know Lyrics

    We have fabulous music from
    The fantastic
    Arcade Fire!

    Sometimes it moves so fast
    Sometimes it moves so fast
    If you stop to ask
    It's already passed
So how can you move so slow?
How can you move so slow?
You miss it if you don't
    You miss it if you

    Don't already know
    Already know
    Already know
    Already know
    Already know

    When your love is right
    When your love is right
    You can't sleep at night
    You've been sleeping just fine
But when your love is bad
    When your love is bad
Don't know why you're so sad
    But it's time to go

    You Already Know
    Already know
    You already know
    You already know
    You already know
    You already know
    You already know
    Already know

    Sometimes it moves so fast
    Sometimes it moves so fast
    If you stop to ask
    It's already passed
So how can you move so slow?
How can you move it so slow?
    You missed it, you know
    You missed it

    You already know
    Already know
    You already know
    You already know
    You already know
    You already know
    You already know

Please stop wondering why you feel so bad
    You already know (Already know)
Please stop wondering why you feel so sad
When you already know (Already know)
Please stop wondering why you feel so bad
When you already know (Already know)
Please stop wondering why you feel so sad
When you already know (Already know)

    Already know
    It's time to go

    She said
    "Well how do I know
    When I know
When I know?" (You already know)

    Well then he said
    "Well how do I know
    When I know
When I know?" (You already know)

    She said
    "Well how do I know
    When I know
    When I know?"

  • This Post-Punk song starts with a clip from Arcade Fire's 2007 performance on Jonathan Ross's BBC talk show when Win Butler smashed a camera live on television with an ukulele. "We have fantastic music from the fantastic Awcade Fiyah," introduced the famously 'r'-challenged chat show presenter.
  • This is one of several tracks on Reflektor where there's a dance-music influence. Win Butler told BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe that it was the album's co-producer, LCD Soundsystem mainman James Murphy, that provided the band with a guiding path for their more rhythmic direction. "If you can get James tapping his foot," Butler said, "you know you're on the right track."
  • Arcade Fire had the first ideas for Reflektor when playing a gig in rural Haiti, which led the group to making a more dancier album, Win Butler explained to Rolling Stone: "You're playing for people who have never heard the Beatles before. In rural Haiti, they've never heard 'I Want To Hold Your Hand.' They've never heard Elvis. So if you don't have any of this kind of context of rock & roll, if you just play a song, what makes it connect? There's the rhythmic elements of the songs and the emotion in the vocal — you're able to really connect with people that you don't share language or a common culture with."

"You know, 'Headlights Look Like Diamonds' is on our first EP and that's pretty much like a New Order dance song, and New Order is probably one of our biggest influences from the beginning," Butler added. "That's one of the things we always connected to with James Murphy. LCD to me is like New Order and the B-52's and we deeply share a lot of those influences, and we did completely different things with it. Régine (Chassagne, bandmate and wife) is kind of the person who dances. At any given minute, if you can get Régine to dance, you're kind of on the right track, so I think we just wanted to make a record that Régine could dance to."
  • Jonathan Ross re-enacted his epilogue on stage with the band during their performances at Coachella and Later Live... with Jools Holland.
  • The music video was filmed and directed by Win Butler. As the band perform the song in a sun-lit bedroom, the camera pans to various pink-eyed framed portraits who come alive and lip-sync to the track.

    Public Image Lyrics

Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello.
    Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha.
You never listen to word that I said
    You only seen me
For the clothes that I wear
Or did the interest go so much deeper
    It must have been
    The colour of my hair.

    Public Image.
What you wanted was never made clear
Behind the image was ignorance and fear
You hide behind his public machine
Still follow the same old scheme.

    Public image.
    Two sides to every story
    Somebody had to stop me
I'm not the same as when I began
I will not be treated as property.

    Public image.
    Two sides to every story
    Somebody had to stop me
I'm not the same as when I began
It's not a game of Monopoly.

    Public image.
Public image you got what you wanted
The Public Image belongs to me
    It's my entrance
    My own creation
    My grand finale
    My goodbye

    Public image.
    Public image.
    Goodbye.

  • Lead singer Johnny Lydon wrote this song while he was still with The Sex Pistols. He was extremely unhappy at the time and thought that he and his fellow Sex Pistols were abused and manipulated by band manager Malcolm McClaren. Public Image, Ltd. was his new group, and it was designed to be a business venture as well as a band (thus the name that sounds like a corporation).

With The Sex Pistols, Lydon was known as "Johnny Rotten." He used his real name for this group. When Public Image Ltd. (also known as PiL) first started, everyone was looking for Sex Pistols version 2.0 and Lydon was not having it. He wanted a completely different image and sound for the new band.
  • Danish popsters Alphabeat covered this on their 2008 self-titled debut album. Guitarist and chief songwriter Anders Bonlokke explained to Q magazine July 2008: "To me, that song is about being outsiders, and that's how we feel among all the Indie bands in London. I think John Lydon would probably hate it."
  • This song finds Lydon starting afresh and going deeper after the Pistols. He told Mojo magazine August 2012: "I think it was clear: 'I don't need to repeat where I stand politically, not ever again. Now let's deal with the personal politics, sort myself out, get rid of the wrong things in me.' You can change everything that's wrong with your enemy by changing yourself first."
