The Black Widow Lyrics

These words he speaks are true, we're all humanary stew if,
We don't pledge allegiance to The Black Widow.
The horror that he brings, the horror of his sting,
The unholiest of kings, the Black Widow.
Our minds will be his toy,
And every girl and boy will learn to be employed by the Black Widow.

Love him, yes, we love him, love him, yes, we love him.

He sits upon his throne and picks at all the bones of his,
Husbands and his wives he's devoured.
He stares with a gleam, with a laugh so obscene,
At the virgins and the children he's deflowered.

Love him, yes, we love him, love him, yes, we love him.

Our thoughts are hot and crazed, our brains are webbed in haze,
Of mindless senseless daze, the Black Widow.
These words he speaks are true, we're all humanary stew,
If we don't pledge allegiance to the Black Widow.

The Black Widow
  • Eight years before the Thriller video, Alice Cooper created the original spooky mini-movie to a song narrated by Vincent Price. Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare was a film based on Cooper's stage show. Price, who was a famous horror actor, portrayed "The Spirit of the Nightmare," in which Cooper was trapped. "The Black Widow" is a lynchpin of the production, and the track that got Price involved in the project.

After coming up with the arachnid theme of this song, Cooper and his producer Bob Ezrin wrote a mordant introduction that they hired Price to narrate. This introduction sets the tone, as Price takes Cooper through his lair, refusing to release him from his nightmare. Price details the deadly proclivities of the black widow spider, which Cooper then sings about as he plays out his fears.

When Welcome To My Nightmare went on the road as a concert tour, this song got a lavish production, with a giant web and humanoid spiders. For the movie, many of these set pieces were used, along with a performance by Price. When done live, Cooper's guitarists Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter dueled on guitar for about 5 minutes while the stage morphed into a spider's lair. Price's recorded voice would then play, before Cooper would finally take the stage. His vocals are just a small part of the number, as most of it is dominated by guitar solos and spider battles.
  • Cooper wrote this song with his producer Bob Ezrin and his guitarist Dick Wagner. In our interview with Dick Wagner , he told us the story:

"I remember standing in the studio with Bob and Alice, and Bob said to me, 'Can you come up with some kind of mid-tempo heavy rock thing?' And I said, 'Let me give it a try.' I plugged my guitar in and just messed around and came up with that. It immediately fit, and Alice started singing 'Black Widow.' And later on he had the idea to bring in Vincent Price to do that talk, which Alice and Bob wrote - they wrote that speech for Vincent Price.

But that initial record, writing the chord changes and stuff, I remember just doing it on the spot; just a momentary inspiration. I wasn't sitting somewhere trying to write a song, it was just spontaneous combustion on the guitar."
  • Unlike most black widows of song and screen, this one is male, as Cooper sings about the spider (or its metaphoric equivalent) sitting on "his throne." This indicates that Vincent Price's character is, in fact, the black widow.

    The Ledge Lyrics

All eyes look up to me
    High above the filthy streets
Heed no bullhorn when it calls
Watch me fly and die, watch me fall

I'm the boy they can't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
All the love sent up high to pledge
    Won't reach The Ledge

Wind blows cold from the west
I smell coffee, I smell doughnuts for the press (on their breath?)
A girl that I knew once years ago
Is tryin' to be reached on the phone

I'm the boy she can't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
All the love sent up high to pledge...

    (Repeat)

Priest kneels silent, all is still
    Policeman reaches from the sill
Watch him, watch him try his best
There'll be no medal pinned to his chest

I'm the boy they couldn't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure

    (Repeat)

I'm the boy for the last time in my life

All the love that they pledge
For the last time will not reach the ledge...

    The Ledge
  • This is yet another song Paul Westerberg wrote about suicide. The band received a lot of flak because the song's release was around the same time a group of new Jersey teens took part in a suicide pact. Westerberg angrily defended the song, stating that it wasn't some cynical attempt to cash in on a tragedy, but more of an expression of empathy for the type of person that would consider such a desperate act. Suicide is one of his most frequent subjects and he has been treated for chronic depression in the past.
  • The fading scream heard at the end of the song is one of the most chilling rock moments ever, as the listener realizes the subject of the song carried out his intentions.

    San Francisco (You've Got Me)
  • This was the first single for the Village People; with its big group chorus, it formed a template for their later hits "Macho Man" and "Y.M.C.A."

The group was created by the French producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, who developed the concept after coming to America and producing the Philadelphia act The Ritchie Family, who had a hit in 1976 with "The Best Disco In Town." The Village People were conceived as a gay Disco group that would dress in outlandish costumes and sing tunes with gay interest by mainstream appeal. Looking for such a song, Morali and Belolo ordered up a song called "San Francisco," which is a very popular city in the gay community. Their associate Peter Whitehead wrote the lyrics, but they were too gay, so they asked Phil Hurtt, who worked with them on The Ritchie Family project, to clean them up. "They were full of sexual innuendo and a gay concept," Hurtt says about the original lyric. After coming up with something less offensive and more ambiguous, Hurtt turned the new lyric over to Morali and Belolo, who put the track together.
  • The group did not exist when this song was recorded. This was not uncommon: producers would put songs together using studio musicians, then figure it out later if they needed a group to perform the songs. Casting for the lead singer was basically done at this session, and the job was offered to Phil Hurtt, who co-wrote the song and sang backup. In our interview with Hurtt , he told us the story:

"When I got there, there was myself and three other background singers. I had put down my own vocal as a lead to put the background parts on, so my own reference vocal was on. I got on the microphone with the background guys and I taught them the background parts, taught them the song, gave them the harmony parts - the whole thing, the arrangement.

When the tracks were all done, Jacques (Morali) says to me, 'Okay, darling, you're the singer for the Village People.' I said, 'No, I'm not.' There was no group, by the way. There was no group at all.

I had some other engagements and was on my way out of town, but he says, 'Well, I need you to do that.' I said, 'I can't do that, but there's a guy in the background who has a heavier voice, like a husky voice.' I said, 'He probably could do it for you.' I'm trying to get out of there.

He says, 'Okay, I'm going to lunch. You try him and let me hear what he sounds like.' So I took this kid in the other studio in New York, and taught him the song 'San Francisco,' and wrote 'Hollywood' while I was in the studio. Taught it to him. Brought him back out, put him on the microphone. And when they came back and heard him, they said, 'Oh, he sounds fine.' That was Victor Willis."
  • The musicians on this track were a group called Gypsy Lane, who also backed The Ritchie Family when The Village People's producers had worked with them.

Whole world is watching us now
    It's a little intimidating
But since there's no way to calm down
    Let's give them some amazing

    Let's make them remember
    Using one word
    Incredible (oh, oh, oh, oh)
    Incredible (oh, oh, oh, oh)

    Let's make them remember
    We were incredible
    Simply incredible

    We even counted us all
We were real sure we'd make it
But, we learned no matter what they dish out
It's nothing we can take it

    We'll go down in history
    They'll describe our love as
    Incredible (oh, oh, oh, oh)
Oh, incredible (oh, oh, oh, oh)

    Let's make them remember
    We were incredible
    Simply incredible

    Everybody say oh

  • This song about an unbelievable love affair is a duet with Ne-Yo. The duo first worked together on Dion's 2007 Taking Chances album, with the R&B singer-songwriter co-writing and co-producing "I Got Nothin' Left." Ne-Yo told Digital Spy : "The first time I worked for her I wrote a song for her, which in itself was surreal… This time around I actually did a duet with her - it's her and me on one song, which was a challenge to say the least! I was trying to figure what I was even doing there - why would they need my voice when they have hers?"

He added, "She wanted to do the song as a duet and I was flattered, but it definitely made me question my vocal ability."
  • Ne-Yo described the experience of working with the Canadian singer to Access Hollywood as "an honor and pleasure." "Working with Celine Dion is kind of like [being] a kid in a candy store because [I had] that huge and incredible voice for me to do basically whatever I want to do with it," he explained. "[I was] like a kid with a brand new toy."

He continued: "It's an honor and pleasure to sing with Celine Dion, but it's not an easy thing. It's the most irrelevant I've ever felt - the size of her voice. [They didn't even] need me there, she could do the whole song herself. I honestly feel like she was just being nice to me letting me sing on the song!"

Check it, since fifteen hundred and sixteen, minds attacked and overseen
Now crawl amidst the ruins of this empty dream
With their borders and boots, on top of us
Pullin' knobs on the floor, of their toxic metropolis
But how you gonna get what you need to get?
The gut eaters, blood drenched get offensive like Tet
The fifth sun sets get back reclaim
The spirit of Cuauhtémoc, alive and untamed
Now face the funk now blastin' out your speaker
    On the one, Maya, Mexica
That vulture came to try and steal your name but now you got a gun
Yeah, this is for the People Of The Sun!

It's comin back around again! This is for the people of the sun!
It's comin back around again! Uh
It's comin back around again! This is for the people of the sun!
It's comin back around again! Uh

Yeah, never forget that the whip snapped ya back
Your spine cracked for tobaco, I'm the Marlboro Man, uh
Our past blastin' on through the verses
Brigades of taxi cabs rollin' Broadway like hearses
Troops strippin' zoots, shots of red mist
Sailors blood on the deck, come sister resist
From the era of terror, check this photo lens
Now the City of Angels does the ethnic cleanse, uh
Heads bobbin' to the funk out your speaker
    On the one, Maya, Mexica
That vulture came to try and steal your name but now you found a gun
You're history! This is for the people of the sun

It's comin back around again! This is for the people of the sun!

  • This somber acoustic R&B tune finds Justin crooning about wanting to make up with a girl who holds a special place in his heart. The song was released as the fourth promotional single from the Canadian star's #MusicMondays series, a 10-week drive in which he unveiled a new tune every Sunday at midnight. "It's here. One of the most important songs to me I've ever written. #Recovery. Hope it helps you! (sic)" Justin tweeted after dropping the cut.
  • The acoustic-backed instrumental samples Craig David's 2000 hit "Fill Me In." The British singer was pleased that Justin had sampled one of his old tunes. "So many great memories flood back when hearing this guitar riff," he tweeted. "Well done @justinbieber sounding great."
  • The song specifically details the dissolution of a relationship, and in a tweet explaining its meaning Justin hinted that his ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, was the inspiration behind the tune. "Recovery is an acknowledgement that in life you can't just fall down and not get over things. You have to step up and recover," he tweeted.

"At the time, I was going through a very hard break up and when you're going through stuff like that you think that the world is just gonna end. Then you wake up the next day and realize that life has to go on."

He added: "Recovery is that feeling you get when you start to move on and make things better for yourself because yesterday is gone and tomorrow is here."

    The civilized keep alive
    The territorial war.
"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."
Erase the race that claim the place
And say we dig for ore,
Or dangle devils in a bottle
And push them from the Pull of the Bush.
"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."
You find them in the road.
"See the light bounce off the rocks to the sand."
    In the road.

Coming in with the golden light
    In the morning.
Coming in with the golden light
    With no warning.
Coming in with the golden light
    We bring in the rigging.
    Dig, dig, dig, dig away.

    "Dree-ee-ee-ee-ee-
    A-a-a-a-a-
    M-m-m-m-m-
    Ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-
    I-i-i-i-i-
    Me-me-me-me-me,"

    Ma-ma-many an Aborigine's mistaken for a tree
    ("La, la, oo-ooh!")
"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."
You near him on the motorway
And the tree begin to breathe.
Erase the race that claim the place
And say we dig for ore.
"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."
    Dangle devils in a bottle
And push them from the Pull of the Bush.
"See the sun set in the hand of the man."

    "Bang!" goes another kanga
On the bonnet of the van.
"See the light bounce off the rocks to the sand."
You find them in the road.
"See the light ram through the gaps in the land."
    In the road.
    "See the light."
    ("Push 'em from the")
    Pull of the Bush.
"See the light bounce off the rocks to the sand."
    ("Push 'em from the")
    Pull of the Bush.
"See the sun set in the hand of the man."

    ("Oh, re mikayina!")

    The Dreaming
  • Bush wrote this about the situation between the white Australians and the aborigines who were being wiped out by man's greed for uranium. White men were digging up aboriginal sacred grounds to get to the plutonium needed to build weapons that could one day destroy everything.
  • The title comes from a religious period of time in the aboriginal culture known as Dreamtime, a time when animals and humans take the same form. Dreamtime is also known as The Dreaming.
  • Traditional aboriginal instruments were used on this song.
  • The Dreaming was Bush's first completely solo produced album.

    Story of My Life Lyrics

Written in these walls are the stories that I can't explain
I leave my heart open but it stays right here empty for days

She told me in the morning
She don't feel the same about us in her bones
It seems to me that when I die
These words will be written on my stone

And I'll be gone, gone tonight
The ground beneath my feet is open wide
The way that I've been holdin' on too tight
    With nothing in between

The Story of My Life, I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm and time
Is frozen (the story of, the story of)
The story of my life, I give her hope
I spend her love until she's broke, inside
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

    Written on these walls are
The colors that I can't change
    Leave my heart open
But it stays right here in its cage

I know that in the morning now
I see ascending light upon a hill
Although I am broken, my heart is untamed, still

And I'll be gone, gone tonight
The fire beneath my feet is burning bright
The way that I've been holdin' on so tight
    With nothing in between

The story of my life, I take her home
I drive all night to keep her warm and time
Is frozen (the story of, the story of)
The story of my life, I give her hope
I spend her love until she's broke, inside
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

And I've been waiting for this time to come around
But baby running after you is like chasing the clouds

    The story of my life
    I take her home
    I drive all night
To keep her warm and time
    Is frozen

The story of my life I give her hope (give her hope)
I spend her love until she's broke (until she's broke inside)
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

    The story of my life
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)
    The story of my life

    Story of My Life
  • This guitar-led ballad finds One Direction singing of a girl who broke their hearts. It was co-written by Jamie Scott, who also co-penned the Up All Night tracks, "More Than This" and "Stole My Heart" as well as the Take Me Home tunes "C'mon C'mon" and "She's Not Afraid." The British singer-songwriter's other credits include Enrique Iglesias' "Heartbeat", Michael Kiwanuka's "Home Again" and Matt Cardle's "Loving You."
  • Niall Horan recalled the first time Scott played them the song during an interview with UK radio station Capital FM. "We were in Nottingham on tour when we were touring the UK back in February and March," he recalled, "and we just came into a room one day and he was like, 'I've got this song that I've written and I want to play [it for] you.' And we just fell in love with it the second we heard it."
  • The One Direction guys contributed to the lyrics whilst "Best Song Ever" collaborators John Ryan and Julian Bunetta produced the tune. Scott recalled to MTV News that as soon as 1D heard his demo, "they freaked out and finished the song with us. It's always good to have their kind of input on lyrics and stuff just to make sure they're really singing what they're singing about."
  • The song is more folk-orientated than most of One Direction's previous offerings, but Scott told MTV News the quintet have the talent to pull it off. "It's not that hard a thing to do because the boys have really good voices, they've all got very different voices. Harry [Styles'] rasp is something that you can always lean towards... All the boys have such a great sound themselves," he said. "For instance the demo that we played the boys sounds a lot more folky than it does now. That's what amazing about their voices [when they record it] straight away it sounds like them."
  • With five vocalists, One Direction was well-suited for the huge chorus in this song, which is the focal point. The song opens with a guitar figure that continues under the first verse. There is a big change in intensity going from the verse to the chorus, and a cymbal swell acts as a transition.

After the first chorus, the drumbeat continues through the second verse. After the second chorus, the song breaks down with just acoustic guitar and vocal ("And I'll be waiting for this time..."), which serves as the bridge. After the third chorus, the song resolves with the music coming out, leaving the last line - the title of the song - bare.
  • The music video was directed by Ben Winston, who also helmed the clip for One Direction's previous single "Best Song Ever." The visual features the guys gazing at old family photographs and literally re-living the memories hey contain. We get to see: Zayn's sister, Niall's brother, Liam's parents and sisters Harry's mother and Louis' grandparents. The latter is an especially poignant scene as two of the folks in the picture are no longer with us, and in a moving moment, they fade and disappear before the recreation takes place.
  • This is the only track on Midnight Memories to be co-written by all five One Directioners, however all but two songs on the album bears the name of at least a single band member in the credits.

    Octavo Dia Lyrics

    A Bill Clinton o a Tarzan

    Octavo Dia
  • This is a satire on life and how materialistic humanity has become. In the song (translated as "Eighth Day"), God takes a break from creating the Earth and when He comes back, he is surprised at how people forgot Him all of a sudden.
