Waters Rising

This Fortress track marked guitarist Mark Tremonti 's vocal debut on an Alter Bridge record. The band's usual singer Myles Kennedy told Kerrang!: "It was a song that I felt had that Mark sound - the way he would play the melody and do his guitar thing - it really suited his vocal. It was the David Coverdale approach!"

Tremonti explained the song's lyrical content to MusicRadar.com : "I wrote this song about a fictional apocalyptic scenario. Just watching the news every day, every week, it seems as though there's always some way for somebody to end it all. After I'd written this song and I'd heard what Myles had done for 'Bleed It Dry,' I was like, 'Wow, we both went there coincidentally.'"

Tremonti's solo happened by mistake. He explained to MusicRadar.com: "I had written a riff that I wasn't feeling, so I was just improvising to see where I could take things. It was one of those situations where you fall down the stairs and you manage to land on your feet."

Romeo And Juliet

This song was inspired by Mark Knopfler's broken romance with Holly Vincent, who was the leader of the band Holly And The Italians. Some of the lyrics indicate that Knopfler felt she used him to boost her career.

The line, "Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him," came from an interview where Holly Vincent was quoted as saying: "What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn't handle it and we split up."

Knopfler's younger brother David, how was rhythm guitarist in Dire Straits, left the band during the album sessions. Having two brothers in the same band caused tension and arguments. Said David: "I left because it was no longer possible for Mark and I to work in the same band. We'd be walking around in the studio with eyes averted to the floor. We no longer had a communicating relationship."

Roy Bittan from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band played keyboards on the album.

This song is about a couple who are in love, but they break up because "The time wasn't right." It's a sad sentiment, as the guy will always love the girl.

This is played in the movie Empire Records, although it does not appear on the soundtrack.

Dire Straits recorded a popular live version for their album On The Night.

Making Movies was recorded at The Power Station in New York City with producer Jimmy Iovine. He had been engineer/mixer on Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run and producer on Patti Smith's Easter.

The Killers covered this on their 2007 B-sides, covers and rarities compilation Sawdust. In an interview with Q magazine January 2008, the band's drummer Ronnie Vannucci explained why they chose this song: "We've covered 'Romeo And Juliet' because it's a great song - Brandon was really into it. The original idea was to do the song with Johnny Borrell (Vocalist of British band Razorlight) though, but he got really sick and couldn't do it." Frontman Brandon Flowers added: "We're not overly anxious about Dire Straits, though. We're not ashamed of covering 'Romeo And Juliet,' either. It's one of the finest songs ever. Brilliant melodies."

This song's solo was one of the toughest for Mark Tremonti to lay down on Fortress. He told MusicRadar.com : "I put it off for a while because of the chord progression – I just didn't feel like it was a good sound bed for an emotional solo. One night I was up, and I came up with a little lick for the melodic phrasing for the beginning of the solo, and I was like, 'That's it! Now I'm saved. I have something to work with here.' After that, it came together pretty quickly."

Head Like A Hole

This song is about the control that money has over people and the pain and suffering associated with it. "God Money" is just that. Money has become a god unto itself (especially in capitalist societies, like the one in America). Trent Reznor is basically saying he'd rather die than give in to temptation.

Both the song name and the moniker Nine Inch Nails were inspired by a quote by Al Jourgensen , lead singer of the metal band Ministry: "Listening to Ministry is like having a nine inch nail hammered into your head like a hole."

This was one of the 165 "lyrically questionable" songs pulled from the radio at the suggestion of Clear Channel Communications, a company that owned over 1,200 radio stations, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The new wave/punk band Devo covered this for Jackie Chan's Hong Kong action flick Police Story 3: Super Cop in 1992.

The Vitamin String Quartet reworked this as part of their tribute to Pretty Hate Machine in 2005.

This song finds Ashanti singing of a former lover she now regrets. Her lyrics settle over producer Mansur's marching band-driven soundscape:

I felt it was important to be vulnerable and show I am human and that I have feelings."

Geno

This song is about Geno Washington, a US Soul singer the band admired. Washington was never big in his home country, but was a popular performer in the UK, where he played with Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd and scored two Top 40 hits in the '60s: "Water" and "Michael."

As Dexys Midnight Runners were on the upswing, packing club shows and getting positive press, Washington's career had faded, and the once-revered singer found himself on the cabaret circuit. "Geno," which was written by Dexys lead singer Kevin Rowland and guitarist Al Archer, is a tribute to Washington and also a look at the cyclical nature of entertainment.

This was the second Dexys Midnight Runners single released in the UK (following "Dance Stance"), and it shot to #1 on the chart, becoming a crowd favorite along the way. Dexys had no distribution in America, so the song wasn't heard in the US. The band would make their splash stateside in 1983 when "Come On Eileen" topped the charts and became an MTV staple.

Dexys Midnight Runners made their mark by adding their distinctive Celtic flavor to Soul music. They championed artists like Washington and did covers of songs by Sam And Dave, Aretha Franklin and the lesser-known Zoot Money. "Soul" was part of Rowland's stage patter ("our hearts are full of soul..."), as he made it clear where their musical roots had grown.

On the band's second album, they had a hit with a cover of "Jackie Wilson Said," which was Van Morrison's tribute to another Soul singer.

There is a reference to the band's name in the line, "This man was my bombers, my dexys, my high." The "dexys" are pep pills - Dexedrine.

Rowland told The Guardian that the lyrics are all true. He recalled: "I saw Geno Washington in 68 at the Railway Hotel in Harrow. I was 15 years old and out with all the older kids – you had to be 18 to get in – short-haired, cool-looking mods-turning-into-skinhead types. Looking back, it's probably not the best gig I've ever been to, but I didn't have anything to compare it to."

The video features plenty of scenes running around alleyways and jumping over railway station ticket barriers. Al Archer told Mojo: "We did all those things. It wasn't any kind of gimmick, we did actually bunk the trains and all that."

Wings

This stirring, propulsive tune was released as the lead single from Birdy's second album, Fire Within. The record finds the teenage singer-songwriter collaborating with some of the biggest names in the business, including on this song Ryan Tedder. The OneRepublic frontman has penned hits for the likes of Leona Lewis ("Bleeding Love") and Beyoncé ("Halo") as well as his own group. "When I first started writing with other people, I was terrified, because on one level, it's a deeply strange thing to do," Birdy admitted, "go into a room and share your ideas with someone you don't know. But I love it now, because it's interesting to hear someone else's take on what you've done, and to draw new inspiration from their ideas."

The song's Sophie Muller-directed video shows Birdy with guests at a flamboyant mansion party. It was shot in and around Pylewell House, which is located near Lymington in Hampshire, England. The clip also stars Birdy's best friend, her younger sister Caitlin, as well as a couple of cousins. "The song is about having a wonderful time and the memory of being with your friends and kind of wishing you were back there, so I wanted it to feel like a festival, and then the director had the idea of putting everyone in carnival clothes to make it a bit weirder and more interesting," she recalled to The Mail On Sunday's You Magazine. "We had a brilliant time making it, everyone just looked so amazing. My little sister Caitlin and two of my cousins are the ones riding the horses, and in the shots of me on the swing I am with my best friend Becky."

The song featured in the trailer for the movie Winter's Tale. Birdy described to Billboard magazine watching the preview and hearing her tune as, "so cool … to have it playing, and for all my friends to see it."

"Wings" was used in a commercial for Lloyds Bank, in which the financial institution celebrates its 250th anniversary. A new acoustic recording of the song as heard in the advert was released in July 2015, which became Birdy's first ever UK Top 10 hit single.

This was written by bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel and guitarist Hugh Cornwell, who wrote most of The Stranglers' material. Said Cornwell: "It was a John bass line and I wrote the lyric and melody."

The song mourns the loss of strong figures in culture and mentions people that Hugh Cornwell had great admiration for: communist leader Leon Trotsky, comedian Lenny Bruce, art forger Elmyr de Hory and Don Quixote side kick Sancho Panza.
And speaking of Lenny Bruce, music legend Al Kooper's memoir Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards tells of Bruce's influence on Kooper. Lenny Bruce's wife Honey and daughter Kitty stayed with Kooper briefly, causing Al Kooper to woolgather about the time at age 16, when he'd gone to Carnegie Hall at a midnight show to catch the legendary comedian. "The stately old hall was packed with jazz musicians, hookers, beatniks, and Manhattan-dwelling yuppies (the kind of white people who went to Harlem for 'kicks'). At the stroke of midnight, Lenny strolled onstage to a thunderous ovation. He walked up to the microphone, did a 180, unzipped his fly, and began to vent. And I mean vent. He had probably retained all day to achieve the effect, urinating nonstop for what seemed like close to five minutes. People went nuts. Some of the yuppies were literally nauseated and walked out of the more expensive seats (lest they should get wet). He shook off, zipped up, turned around to a standing ovation before he even opened his mouth, and slowly shushed the audience. His first words? 'Okay! Now that we got ridda da squares, let's get down to business!'"

Cornwell: "When No More Heroes came out, we refused to sign autographs because we were saying, "Don't have heroes. Be your own hero." The people in No More Heroes are anti-heroes really."

SuperLove

This was released as the first single from Charli XCX's sophomore major label album. "'SuperLove' is a song about running away and falling in love with someone," she said, "and it being really dangerous and bad for you but still amazing, romantic and wonderful."

Charli added that the song was influenced by artists like Bow Wow Wow, The Waitresses and The Flying Lizards as well as "those Lolita-esque bratty French girls and other girl power heroines." She wrote the tune the same week as "I Love It." "Let's just say I was in a similar mind frame," she said.

Although the song was originally announced as the lead single from Charli's then un-titled second major-label studio album, it was eventually not included on Sucker.
