Oh Sweet Lorraine Lyrics

Oh Sweet Lorraine
  • This features the Peoria, Illinois-based Green Shoe Studio CEO/producer Colgan Jacob Colgan and Fred Stobaugh, who penned the song. 96-year-old Stobaugh wrote "Lorraine" for his wife of 72 years, who died in April 2013. "Well, after she passed away," he recalled in the song's official documentary video , "I was just sitting in the front room one evening by myself. It just [came] to me. I kept humming it. It just seemed like it fit her."
  • Stobaugh entered his tune in a songwriting contest that Green Shoe studio was running. Colgan remembered receiving his letter. "What made Fred's entry so special was instead of a video, it was a large manila envelope titled Green Shoe Studio Singer Songwriter contest. It's an online contest. People [were] supposed to upload their videos," he said. "But, we received a manila envelope. Lo and behold, it was a letter from a 96-year-old man who said, 'I've written a song for my [late] wife.'"

Colgan added: "I started to read the lyrics and was so touched by the song and without even meeting Fred we thought, we're going to do something."
  • According to Colgan, Fred joked in his letter about his inability to sing. "On the actual envelope itself, it says ' P.S. I don't sing, I would scare people, haha,'" said the Green Shoe Studio CEO.
  • The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #42, making Stobaugh the oldest-most credited artist to appear on the chart. He overtook Tony Bennett, who was 85 years and two months old when "Body and Soul" with Amy Winehouse, spent a week on the survey in 2011.

    Sugar Shack Lyrics

There's a crazy little shack beyond the tracks
And everybody calls it the Sugar Shack
Well, its just a coffeehouse and its made out of wood
    Espresso coffee tastes mighty good
That's not the reason why I've got to get back
To that sugar shack, whoa baby
    To that sugar shack.

There's this cute little girlie, she's a-working there
A black leotard and her feet are bare
I'm gonna drink a lot of coffee, spend a little cash
Make that girl love me when I put on some trash
You can understand why I've got to get back
To that sugar shack, whoa baby
To that sugar shack, yeah honey
To that sugar shack, whoa yes
    To that sugar shack

Now that sugar shack queen is a-married to me, yeah yeah
We just sit around and dream of those old memories
Ah, but one of these days I'm gonna lay down tracks
In the direction of that sugar shack
Just me and her yes were gonna go back
    To that sugar shack,
    Whoa uh oh
O that sugar shack, yeah honey
    To our sugar shack

Yea, yea, yea, our sugar shack

  • This song was recorded in Clovis, New Mexico at Norman Petty's studio in 1963. The original group was made up of Geo Tomsco, Chuck Tharp, Stan Lark, Danny Trammer and Eric Budd. Tharp was drafted and the band hired Jimmy Gilmer in his place. He, instead of Tharp, is on the cut.
  • The Fireballs recorded the song and took a break before doing another. It is said when they came back Norman had put a keyboard part on. They were upset, but when the song went to #1 they thought different.

    Album: The Electric Lady
    Released: 2013

    Electric Lady Lyrics

    Electric Lady
  • This is the title track of the second studio album by the American recording artist Janelle Monáe. The record continues the utopian cyborg concepts of its predecessors and serves as the fourth and fifth installment of her seven-part Metropolis concept series.
  • The song (and album title) is a reference to an imaginary woman Monáe started painting when listening to her track "Mushrooms and Roses" whilst on tour. Each night she'd paint the same female silhouette until she'd produced over 100. Monáe brought up was the woman, during a visit to a shrink and the professional advised her to name her, and the Electric Lady was born.
  • Asked who the Electric Lady is, Monáe replied: "Someone who cares for the community, who has her own perspective on making love and what love is."
  • This song features Solange Knowles, who is the sister of Beyoncé. She is best known for her 2008 single, "I Decided," which was a Top 40 hit in several European countries.
  • The Electric Lady album cover is a drawing by New York artist Sam Spratt of Monáe plus her alter ego Cindi Merriweather alongside her four sisters. Spratt said in NME: "I took her and my own influences and made these disparate elements cohesive without being some sort of Frankenstein's monster."
  • The song's music video pays tribute to some of the Electric Ladies that came before. The clip starts off at at Monáe's home, where she says goodbye to her mom (yep, that's Janelle's real mother saying the opening monologue). She then heads off to a house party for the Electro Phi Betas alumnae, where we see TLC's T-Boz, Monica, Estelle, Esperanza Spalding and Kimbra singing along as framed photos on a wall of the college honorees.

Janelle's dance partner is rapper T.I. They supply some impressive moves choreographed by Fatima Robinson.

    I Hung My Head Lyrics

Early one morning with time to kill
I borrowed Jeb's rifle and sat on the hill
I saw a lone rider crossing the plain
I drew a bread on him to practice my aim
My brother's rifle went off in my hand
A shot rang out across the land
The horse he kept running the rider was dead
I Hung My Head, I hung my head
I hung my head, I hung my head

I set off running to wake from the dream
My brother's rifle went into the stream
I kept on running into the salt lands
And that's where they found me, my head in my hands
The sheriff he asked me "Why had I run"
Then it came to me just what I had done
And all for no reason, just one piece of lead
I hung my head, I hung my head
I hung my head, I hung my head

Here in the courthouse, the whole town is there
I see the judge high up in his chair
"Explain to the courtroom what went through your mind
And we'll ask the jury what verdict they find"
I said "I felt the power of death over life
I orphaned his children I widowed his wife
I beg their forgiveness I wish I was dead"
I hung my head, I hung my head
I hung my head, I hung my head

Early one morning with time to kill
I see the gallows up on the hill
And out in the distance a trick of the brain
I see a lone rider crossing the plain
He's come to fetch me to see what they done
We'll ride together 'til Kingdom come
I pray for God's mercy for soon I'll be dead
I hung my head, I hung my head
I hung my head, I hung my head

    I Hung My Head
  • In this song, a man grabs his brother's rifle to practice his aim. The gun accidentally goes off and kills a lone rider, and the shooter panics, runs off and throws the rifle into a stream. The song goes on to explain the verdict and how bad he felt and his plea for forgiveness. In the end, it is time for his own death, while the lone rider and him ride together to "kingdom come." It has much more of a Country/Bluegrass sound than most of Sting's songs.
  • Johnny Cash recorded this on his 2002 album American IV, The Man Comes Around. Careful listeners will notice Cash sings the lyric "My brother's rifle went into the stream" as "My brother's rifle went into the sheen," and the next line changes "salt lands" to "south lands." Sting assumes this came from a misprint but was nevertheless "so proud to hear my words and music interpreted by 'the master,'" he wrote in Lyrics By Sting.
  • "I wrote my version of the song in 9/8," Sting noted in Lyrics By Sting. "The guitar riff just occurred to me that way and reminded me of the gait of a galloping horse dragging a corpse. The story of a terrible accident, guilt, and redemption materialized out of the title and out of the haunting image of a riderless horse."
  • Johnny Cash's version was prominently featured in the sixth season premiere of The Shield and in the 2011 movie The Green Hornet.

    Save the Night Lyrics

A little trouble in the city
    Trouble in my home
She told me love don't live here anymore
I wanna run to the light
It's too dark in this part of night
I need somebody who can make it right

    And it's on tonight
How about we go and Save the Night
I can see you want it and so do I
How about we go and save the night
    Let's save the night

I'm not a one man band
I want to sing a duet
You and me would sound much better
You look so good in my bed
And if your gonna go out
Your gonna go on with a bang
Let's save the night I'll be your superman

    And it's on tonight
How about we go and save the night
I can see you want it and so do I
How about we go and save the night
    Let's save the night

I see the night flashing before her eyes
Resuscitating bring it back to life

    And it's on tonight
How about we go and save the night
I can see you want it and so do I
How about we go and save the night

    Save the Night
  • The Runners original demo for the song's chorus was in a completely different key. Co-producer Dave Tozer told SonicScoop how he went about altering it: "The first thing I did," he explained, "was change the key to put it in a better spot for John's range, then John and I rewrote the song, starting with the chorus melody, then we wrote the rest of the parts around it. We gave the verses more of a bluesy vibe and we added some 808s, a ton of claps, and really made those drums hit."

Real love; isnt anyone true anymore?
Real love; wont somebody show me?
    Real love where are you?

    All through my life
    I've been feelin' down
    Searchin to find
    Im lost and not found
    There's gotta be someone
    Someone who understands me

  • This song featured a very popular (or in some eyes, a very unpopular) Shannen Doherty, who was featured in the hit TV show Beverly Hills, 90210. It's rumored that Shannen needed extra money to pay for expenses that got out of control. Another rumor is that the lead singer of Slaughter liked Doherty on the show so much so that he invited her to be in their video.

I May Hate Myself in the Morning Lyrics

Ain't it just like one of us
    To pick up the phone
And call after a couple of
    Drinks,
    And say,
    "How you been?
    I been wonderin'
That maybe you've been thinkin' 'bout me."
    And somewhere in the conversation,
An old familiar invitation always arrives,
An' I May Hate Myself in the Morning,
But I'm gonna love you tonight.

    Everyone's known someone
That they just can't help but want,
And even though we just can't make it work out,
    Well the want-to lingers on.
So once again we wind up in each other's arms,
    Pretending that it's right,
An' I may hate myself in the morning,
But I'm gonna love you tonight.

    I know it's wrong,
But it ain't easy moving on.
So why can't two friends remember the good times once again?

    Tomorrow when I wake up,
I'll be feeling a little guilty, an' a little sad,
Thinkin' how it used to be before everything went bad.
An' I guess that's what it is,
In lonely late night calls like this, that we try to find
An' I may hate myself in the morning,
But I'm gonna love you tonight.

I may hate myself in the morning,
But I'm gonna love you tonight.

I May Hate Myself in the Morning
  • This was released in October 2004 as the leadoff single from Lee Ann Womack's album There's More Where That Came From. The song was a Top 10 hit on both the US and Canadian Country charts and also peaked at #66 on the Hot 100.
  • The ballad finds the narrator about to have a night of passion with a man aware of the consequences of how she'll feel when she wakes up in the morning. Womack told The Mirror: "This is the kind of stuff I grew up listening to. How true is this song? Even if you haven't been in that situation, we all know somebody who has. It's just honest."
  • The song was written by Odie Blackmon. "I wrote that one by myself," he told Roughstock . "That was a true story. It was something I was going through at the time. I was actually living in a house that was a duplex next door to the girl I wrote the song about."

"It has become a sticky situation," Blackmon added. "That song poured out in 30 minutes. One morning, I was just down about the whole deal, and I didn't have a co-write, but I had a guitar. It just kind of poured out. I sat there looking at it on the page while playing my cassette back, going man ... I think this is really, really good."
  • The song won the prize for Best Single at the 2005 Country Music Awards.

Don't Go Back To Rockville Lyrics

Looking at your watch a third time waiting in the station for a bus
Going to a place that's far, so far away and if that's not enough
Going where nobody says hello, they don't talk to anybody they don't know
You'll wind up in some factory that's full time filth and nowhere left to go
Walk home to an empty house, sit around all by yourself
I know it might sound strange, but I believe
You'll be coming back before too long

    [Chorus]
    Don't Go Back To Rockville,
    Don't go back to Rockville,
    Don't go back to Rockville
    And waste another year

At night I drink myself to sleep and pretend
I don't care if you're not here with me
'Cause it's so much easier to handle
All my problems if I'm too far out to sea
    But something better happen soon
Or it's gonna be too late to bring you back

    [Chorus]

It's not as though I really need you
If you were here I'd only bleed you
But everybody else in town only wants to bring you down and
That's not how it ought to be
I know it might sound strange, but I believe
You'll be coming back before too long

    Don't Go Back To Rockville
  • This is about Ingrid Schorr, a girl the band knew at the University of Georgia whose hometown was Rockville, Maryland. She got a lot of attention on campus as classmates lamented her departure.
  • This is one of the few R.E.M. songs where bass player Mike Mills wrote most of the lyrics and sings the lead vocal.
  • The band had already been playing this song in a much faster, punk-like style for a long time and didn't even consider it for the Reckoning album until their legal advisor, Bertis Downs, begged them to "at least do one take of it for me ... please!?!?"

Drummer Bill Berry remembers tweaking the song to mess with Downs: "To playfully suggest to him that the song wasn't in contention, we recorded a much slower version than he was accustomed to hearing and we sprinkled it with a Nashville twang to drive the point home. It started out silly, but when Mike added piano, the tune took on new light. Thanks, Bert!" (Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011)

"One of the most important things about the blues to me has always been the harp," said Knopfler. "Seeing Muddy Waters as a kid made a big impression on me, the harp was burbling away all the time, the band was swinging. And to me the greatest modern exponent is Kim Wilson, he's been my top man for many years, so it was really great to have him on board. We hit it off straight away and got a great session going."

    Frankie And Johnny Lyrics

    Frankie And Johnny
  • Originally titled "Frankie and Albert," this traditional murder ballad was inspired by the real-life crime of passion committed by Frankie Baker in 1899. Frankie discovered her lover, Albert Britt, had been with another woman and took revenge by shooting him at a boardinghouse in St. Louis, Missouri. She would be acquitted under plea of self-defense.

The origins of the song as we know it today are a bit murky. That same year, local singer Bill Dooley composed a song sensationalizing the case, and it became a popular mainstay in local saloons before its official publication as "Frankie and Johnny" in 1904. The song was not credited to Dooley, however, but to ragtime composer/lyricist Hughie Cannon.

Frank and Bert Leighton's 1908 version, which was published as "Frankie and Johnny" in 1912, brought us the familiar opening:

    Frankie and Johnny were sweethearts
They had a quarrel one day

Countless covers over the years have provided many variations of the song. Sometimes the duo are "lovers" instead of "sweethearts." Johnny's mistress can be Alice Pry or Nelly Bly. Sometimes, Frankie is cheered by onlookers as she shoots Johnny and is exonerated; other times, she's executed.
  • Many artists have recorded this, including Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. Sam Cooke sang a cleaner version than most, which is the most popular contemporary cover. Here are the charting versions in America:

    1959, #57 - Johnny Cash
    1961, #20 - Brook Benton
    1963, #14 - Sam Cooke
    1964, #75 - The Greenwood County Singers
    1966, #25 - Elvis Presley
  • Elvis Presley starred in a 1966 movie called Frankie And Johnny where he performed the song. In 1991, another movie of the same name was released starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer, who in one scene banter over the song when they realize they are named Frankie and Johnny. The exchange:

Pfeiffer: Didn't they kill each other?
Pacino: No. She killed him. You got the edge there.
  • In 1942, the real Frankie Baker filed a defamation suit against Republic Pictures for the 1936 film Frankie and Johnnie, starring Helen Morgan and Chester Morris. Frankie lost the lawsuit and was never able to escape her reputation as a murderer, though she had been acquitted. She said during the (defamation) court proceedings: "I was pointed out as the worst woman in the world and introduced as the Frankie of song, instead of Miss Baker."
  • Brook Benton's R&B version was included in the 2011 compilation Mad Men: A Musical Companion.
  • Anika Noni Rose performed this in the 2011 miniseries Bag of Bones, based on the Stephen King novel. Rose played Sara Tidwell in the movie.

Rich girl, and you've gone too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
You can rely on the old man's money
You can rely on the old man's money
It's a bitch, girl, but it's going too far
'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
Say money, money won't get you too far, get you too far

You messed up, yeah you messed up bad,
Rolled the dice on the life we had,
Played your tough guy game, you threw it all away…
    (Money money)
We had diamonds and we had pearls,
Champagne life like a Daddy's Girl,
But the risks you take ain't worth the price you pay…

I'll keep your secrets, I'll never tell,
You know I'll ride with you right through the fire of hell…
They got your number, but you're safe with me,
Even if they lock you up and throw away the key

    You know…
I'll be there whenever you call
Oh I'll be there whenever you call
Oh no, I'll never let you down
I hear your voice aloud in my heart
Oh no, they'll never keep us apart
Oh no, I'll never let you down

Rich girl got that bad boy love
Rich girl better run, run, run
Rich girl got that bad boy love
    Rich girl keep running, running…

    Mansion, ransom, gangster man,
Can't wipe that blood right off your hands,
Your Scarface heart ain't stopped me loving you babe…
    (Money money)
Con-man, wrong plan, how you fall,
Got no more cash stashed in your walls,
The Repo man got debts for your soul to pay.

Do I look pretty through all your tears?
Can your diamond Rolex count the goddamn years?
Was it worth it? Don't you miss me bad?
Too late to trade it all for that one last chance.

    You know…
I'll be there whenever you call
Oh I'll be there whenever you call
Oh no, I'll never let you down
I hear your voice aloud in my heart
Oh no, they'll never keep us apart
Oh no, I'll never let you down

Let them take it all away
    The sweet Rosé, the Cartier,
To stop the warden call your name
I'd give you all my freedom babe,
I love you right, I love you wrong,
When all our luck and money's gone,
Cause they don't know you like I know
    I'd never let you down

Rich girl got that bad boy love
Rich girl better run, run, run
Rich girl got that bad boy love
    Rich girl keep running, running…
Rich girl got that bad boy love
Rich girl better run, run, run
    Rich girl, rich girl
    I'll never let you down!

Oh I'll be there whenever you call

    Daddy's Girl
  • This is a track from Natalia Kills' second album, Trouble, which recounts various memories of her awkward riches-to-rags childhood. She explained to Marie Claire: "When I was born, my family had a lot, but by the time I was 11, my dad had been accused of being a criminal and we were visiting him in jail. The police took everything - all the cars, all the houses."
  • This love song is Kills' personal favorite from the album. The track explores her mother's devotion to her father while he was in prison. "I'm 26 now and I kind of get it," she told Billboard magazine of her mother's decision to remain supportive. She sings:

"Let them take it all the way. The sweet Rozay, the Cartier
Stop the warden, call your name
I'd give you all my freedom, babe."

"It's basically like, I'd trade all of these luxurious things we've ever had just to have you come back to me," Kills explained. "So that's what the champagne and Rolex symbolizes on the cover."
  • The song contains a sample from "Rich Girl" by Hall & Oates.

    High Head Blues Lyrics

Sometimes I have a ghetto in my mind
Other times sunshine high head fine
In between I get cold, old mean
Intertwined with country pride open and kind

    This draws a line
    Sorry to coin a phrase
On either side is wisdom and rage
    So keeping track of time
    Racing with my age
    Sleeping with the snakes
Forget that you showed up late
    It ain't worth it baby

    [Chorus:]
    A charmed life it is
At least they tell you so
    I got a good idea
It ain't like they say is so
And if it is then let me go
    Let me go

Any day there might be hell to pay
    But in other ways
    It makes it seem OK
I'll tell you what I mean
    It's not a plot nor a scheme
It's just peace in my mind
Again can I use the word kind
I ain't sorry about it baby

    [Chorus]

    High Head Blues
  • A Latin-tinged track from the third Black Crowes album, this song refers to being sober and the need to get high: "In between I get cold, old, and mean."

The band had a love affair with marijuana around this time: they were featured on the cover of High Times magazine in 1992, and played the Atlanta Pot Festival.
  • At the end of the song, the Spanish after the solo translates into "This is the best weed."
  • French filmmaker Michel Gondry, who directed Björk's debut "Human Behaviour" clip a year earlier, helmed the music video that has a tiny flying saucer landing in frontman Chris Robinson's house so he can become the subject of alien experiments.
