Gazpacho Lyrics

Saw you walking on your velvet lawn
Is it lonely on the moon?
You took a dive and swallowed all you could
Did you drink too much too soon?
Nothing left for you to fight about
And no one wants to see you try
The nearest neighbours are a mile away
Does the ocean hear you cry?

Punching at the sky
They say the King is losin´ his grip again
They said you´re bullet proof, they said you feel no pain
It seems the hero is misunderstood again

Is it love or is it surgery
Makes her seem so ill at ease
As she´s begging you to please calm down
In her silk Armani on her knees

Did you carry out those threats I heard
Or were you only playing macho?
And the stains on her Versace scarf
Were they really just Gazpacho?

They say the King is watching his back again
They say the King is losing his grip again
Raging like a bull to an empty ring
D´you think they will forgive a hero anything?

Now the ring is just a band of gold
And your wife needs police protection
While you´re sparring with the journalists
You´re trying to win back her affection
Is this what it means to be a man
Boxing up all your emotion
So now she´s gone and you´re alone at last
You can tell it to the ocean

They say the King is losing his grip again
They say the King is countin´ his numbered days
You never lost a fight in your whole life
You never had no trouble sleepin´ through the night
The bottle and the doctor get you through the day
The boys who run the house´ll make it all okay
You think they will forgive a hero anything
Maybe Hollywood
But maybe then again

Now the ring is just a band of gold
Drive the road

Gazpacho
  • Gazpacho is a kind of tomato soup. In this song, Steve Hogarth sings:

Did you carry out those threats I heard
Or were you only playing macho?
And the stains on her Versace scarf
    Were they really just Gazpacho?

This is a vague reference to the O.J. Simpson trial, which was the big news story around the time the song was written. In the trail, the American football star was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and a waiter named Ronald Goldman. Despite blood evidence pointing to Simpson, he was found not guilty in a trial that garnered massive news coverage.

Gazpacho never factored into the case, but it's a great word to sing, letting Hogarth flex his vocals a bit.
  • Steve Hogarth wrote the lyrics with John Helmer, an author he often collaborated with. In addition to the Simpson case, the movie Raging Bull, starring Robert de Niro as a tormented boxer, was an inspiration. The line, "Now the ring is just a band of gold" is something Helmer came up with, referring to how life in a boxing ring gave way to marriage.
  • Musically, Hogarth says the band was "trying to capture the spirit of early Yes" on this track. The bass is out front in the mix, which suited Marillion bass player Pete Trewavas just fine. "This is the perfect song for a bass player to show off in," he wrote in press materials. "It has the pounding verses and lovely high runs in the choruses. I remember us writing this and getting the verses together. I instantly started playing the heavy Rickenbacker type bass line for the verse and wonder if I would get away with it."
  • The bit at the beginning which sounds like John Lennon was taken from a film called John Lennon: A Journey In The Life, where the actor Bernard Hill speaks his words. The passage used comes from Lennon's 1980 Playboy interview, where he said, "I would find myself seeing hallucinatory images of my face changing and becoming cosmic and complete."

    Blind faith
    Heartache
    Mind games
    Mistakes
    My sweet fireball
    My sweet rigmarole
    I Want It All
    I want it all

    Old dogs
    New tricks
    Can you feel it?
    Space age country girl
    Stone cold miracle
    I want it all
    I want it all

And then suddenly it hit me it's a year ago
Since I drank miniature whiskey and we shared your coke
Ain't it just like you to kiss me and then hit the road
Leave me listening to the stones
    2000 light years from home

    I Want It All
  • The Arctic Monkeys have a formula for creating their tunes, which includes making the sound and then penning the lyrics afterwards. Vocalist Alex Turner told NME about the creation of this song: "It was quite early on, that one," he said. "We were messing around with this four-track cassette recorder, and he (Jamie Cook) was playing this riff, so we recorded five minutes of that and I wrote melodies and lyrics over the top. That became a formula, almost - we recorded instrumentals on this four-track and then I'd sit with my headphones on and write."
  • The song was debuted by the band on the UK XFM radio station on September 2, 2013.
  • This borrows backing vocals from Marvin Gaye's "'Sexual Healing."

    Take, Take, Take
  • Along with "White Moon," this is one of two songs on Get Behind Me Satan where Jack White envisions meeting Rita Hayworth for the first time. Hayworth was a glamorous actress who died in 1987; White was intrigued with her at the time and had pictures of her all over his Detroit home where the Get Behind Me Satan album was recorded. White is probably making a statement on idolatry and the trappings of fame.
  • Jack White told Guitar World (February 2006) about the title of the album: "The album title is consciously ambiguous. It can either mean 'Get out of my way, Satan!', or 'Get behind me, Satan and help me out!" Rock and blues are both so powerful, and there is always something both good and evil lurking in that power. Both have been called 'the devil's music.' Take for example, 'If I Had Possession Over Judgment Day' by Robert Johnson. I don't think he's fooling around. When you write songs, you become a conduit for all kinds of energy. I may think the inspiration is coming out of me, but I'm not so sure sometimes. It makes me question what power is driving certain things. It's hard to talk about because you can sound a little ridiculous."

    Fireside Lyrics

I can't explain but I want to try
There's this image of you and I
And it goes dancing by in the morning and in the night time

There's all these secrets that I can't keep
Like in my heart there's that hotel suite and you lived there so long,
It's kinda strange now you're gone

I'm not sure if I should show you what I've found
    Has it gone for good?
Or is it coming back around?
Isn't it hard to make up your mind?
When you're losing and your fuse is Fireside

There's all those places we used to go
And I suspect you already know
But that place on memory lane you liked still looks the same
    But something about it's changed

I'm not sure if I should show you what I've found
    Has it gone for good?
Or is it coming back around?
Isn't it hard to make up your mind?
When you're losing and your fuse is fireside

And I thought I was yours forever
Maybe I was mistaken but I just cannot manage to make it through the day
    Without thinking of you lately

I'm not sure if I should show you what I've found
    Has it gone for good?
Or is it coming back around?
Isn't it hard to make up your mind?
When you're losing and your fuse is fireside

    Fireside
  • This was the one AM track that wasn't recorded in California. Alex Turner was asked by Q magazine if the LP will serve as the group's "big LA record." He replied: "It's funny you should ask, because our label boss heard the song 'Fireside' and told me it's the most Californian song I'd written."

"And of course, that was the one I'd written in London. What I realize now is that, whatever we try, it always sounds like the Arctic Monkeys."
  • Former Coral member Bill Ryder-Jones contributed additional guitar to this tune. Alex Turner said to Q magazine of the guitarist. "He got us out of a corner there with 'Fireside.' I kept spoiling it with my sheddery and he came in with his guitar. He's a melancholy solo specialist!"
  • Q magazine told Alex Turner that the song sounds quite romantic. Turner replied: "'Fireside' is the same song as 'Do I Wanna Know?' in terms of what it's saying,. They've both got a sort of 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' quality. It's just how you tell 'em."

    Around The World
  • The entirety of the lyrics are the phrase "Around the world" repeated 144 times.
  • Michel Gondry directed the video. He has quite an imagination, and for this song, he had different characters representing different sounds in the song all moving around a circle.

Among the characters are four disco girls moving up and down a set of stairs, symbolizing the ascending/descending bass guitar. Gondry recalled to NME: "Chic always makes me dance. When I did the video for 'Around The World' I built the stairs for the dancers because every time I hear the bassline from 'Good Times' I picture a little guy going up and down the stairs."
  • Daft Punk are the French duo of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. They recorded a track with the English band Stereolab called "Cindy So Loud," which was described as "Daft Punk" (meaning they didn't like it) by the British music magazine Melody Maker. This provided the name for the band. Their first album, which includes this track, was called "Homework" because they recorded it in Bangalter's home studio.

    Knee Socks Lyrics

You got the lights on in the afternoon
And the nights are drawn out long
And you're kissing to cut through the gloom
With a cough drop coloured tongue
And you were sitting in the corner with the coats all piled high
And I thought you might be mine
In a small world on an exceptionally rainy Tuesday night
In the right place and time

When the zeros line up on the 24 hour clock
When you know who's calling even though the number is blocked
When you walked around your house wearing my sky blue Lacoste
    And your Knee Socks

Well you cured my January blues
Yeah you made it all alright
I got a feeling I might have lit the very fuse
That you were trying not to light
You were a stranger in my phonebook I was acting like I knew
'Cause I had nothing to lose
When the winter's in full swing and your dreams just aren't coming true
Ain't it funny what you'll do

When the zeros line up on the 24 hour clock
When you know who's calling even though the number is blocked
When you walked around your house wearing my sky blue Lacoste
    And your knee socks

    The late afternoon
The ghost in your room that you always thought didn't approve of you knocking boots
Never stopped you letting me get hold of the sweet spot by the scruff of your
    Knee socks

You and me could have been a team
Each had a half of a king and queen seat
Like the beginning of mean streets
    You could be my baby

    Knee Socks
  • Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme sings on both this tune and another AM track, "One For The Road." Homme produced half of Arctic Monkeys' 2009 album Humbug, and vocalist Alex Turner lent backing vocals to QOTSA's ...Like Clockwork track "If I Had A Tail." Turner told BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe that Homme's appearance on the album was both casual and potentially unusual. "The Josh thing was very much a case of one of us returning a back scratch to the other," he said. "He came down and sort of got us out of a little rut. It's just fun, it's friends, extended family now - [they] came round, had a fun night. His contribution to our record is really exciting, it's probably my favorite. The 30 seconds that he's in there is just, I dunno, it's like something that I've never heard before."
  • Turner told NME about Homme's contribution to this song: "I think he sounds a bit like Bowie. It's my favourite bit of the record, that breakdown; that 30 seconds where it all goes weird," he said. "What's most interesting about it is how accidental it was - I'd sung on the new Queens record a few weeks previous, and we were kind of in a rut a little bit, in this dark rooms. So Josh came down, Nick (O'Malley, bass) made cocktails and we just hung out for the night. We got him to sing on 'One For The Road' and then we were playing him 'Knee Socks,' because we'd just been working on it. We were thinking about putting someone on that section, possibly to do the bit that the three of us were originally doing, which is this really fast R&B bit. But then he heard it and then he said, 'I've got this really great idea for a counter-melody background thing,' and he went and did that and it suddenly became this whole other thing that you never excited it to be. I think it kind of makes the tune. Suddenly, we were out of the rut and re-energised - Josh saved the day!"

    Travelling Without Moving
  • Written by lead singer Jay Kay, this song starts with him accelerating up until fifth gear in a 1994 Lamborghini Diablo SE30.
  • Jay Kay was branded a hypocrite by some critics for using the Ferrari-inspired logo that adorned the Travelling Without Moving album cover (with the group's Buffalo Man mascot standing in for the familiar black horse), undermining the environmentally conscious Emergency on Planet Earth album.

But the frontman is unapologetic about his addiction to sports cars. "People say, 'Jay you've got fourteen cars, how unenviromentally friendly.' But you can't drive them all at once. Even if I'm driving one, there's thirteen that somebody else can't because they're mine," he reasoned in a 2001 Esquire interview. At the time, his collection included numerous Ferraris, an Aston Martin DB5, two Mercedes 4×4s, a 1960s Mercedes convertible and an Audi RS4.
  • If your spell-checker flagged the song and album title, you're probably American; most English-speaking countries spell "Traveling" with two Ls ("Travelling").

I don't know where we are
But can you bring me to here again?
    I don't know why we've come

    What Sarah Said Lyrics

And it came to me then
    That every plan
Is a tiny prayer to father time

As I stared at my shoes
    In the ICU
That reeked of piss and 409

    And I rationed my breaths
    As I said to myself
That I'd already taken too much today

    As each descending peak
    On the LCD
Took you a little farther away from me
    Away from me

    Amongst the vending machines
    And year old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye

It sung like a violent wind
    That our memories depend
On a faulty camera in our minds

And I knew that you were truth
    I would rather loose
Than to have never lain beside at all

    And I looked around
At all the eyes on the ground
    As the TV entertained itself

Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous paces bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round
    And everyone lifts their head
But I'm thinking of What Sarah Said

That love is watching someone die

So who's gonna watch you die

    What Sarah Said
  • Sarah is an acquaintance of lead singer Ben Gibbard. The narrator is the one that is dying. His wife is standing with him waiting for his inevitable death and he is saying that he knew death would come for one of them at some point. She shows her love by standing with him, and he asks her, "who's gonna watch you die?" because he will already be gone.
  • This song very nearly didn't make the album. Ben Gibbard said on his record label's website: "It stewed for a year and a half."
  • Gibbard (from his record label's website): "The song was inspired by a friend. She was walking with her husband one day and just burst into hysterical tears because she realized that one day one of the two of them would have to watch the other die."
  • In an article in Paste magazine, Gibbard wrote: "I feel that songwriters are held to a different standard than almost any other type of writer - some fans get genuinely upset if I admit that a song that they held close to their heart was not based on actual events in my life. Like 'What Sarah Said': I was never in a waiting room in a hospital waiting for news that somebody was going to die. I've been in hospital waiting rooms before, waiting for a doctor's appointment, and I got a sense of the general vibe of the room - not a joyous place - and I decided to set a song there."

See most my niggas died early twenties or late teens

Feelin' like a stranger in my own land
Got me feeling like Brody in Homeland
I just want a shot to show my genius
Standing on the top hold my penis
America tried to emasculate the greats
Murder Malcolm, gave Cassius the shakes
Wait, tell them rumble young man rumble
Try to dim your lights tell you be humble
You know I'm gon shine like a trillion watts
You know a nigga trill as Michael Jackson socks
Sendin' light out to Compton and the hundred blocks

    Fuck up the uh

You front row everywhere, you in the H.O.V.'s

Speaking to Esquire, Lewis said about Hova's reference: "It's one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me. My natural habitat is quite a long way from, you know, a gangster rapper. So the fact I've somehow straddled popular culture to find myself name checked... From the RSC... To the Jay Z."

God Gave Me A Gun Lyrics

    God Gave Me A Gun
  • Clyne: "I was very conflicted. The time that this record was written was in the shadow of a war and then during a war. I know how I feel about war and how a lot of people feel about war, and it was hard to say if it was either just or unjust. As an artist, I had to report. These are tough times to make a call. If anybody wants to say I'm vacillating, they're welcome to, but these are times when black and white often collide and coalesce and right and wrong are not easy to pick apart. I think you can hear a lot of confusion in the record."
  • At the insistence of his manager, the band recorded and released the song in March 2003 as the United States prepared for war. "I had the song, but I wasn't planning on putting it out," Clyne says. "Our manager, Peter Lubin, said, "If you have any backbone as an artist, you'll put it out now and take a stand with the way you feel. God bless him for making me do that and we did. We recorded it and put it out the day after as a free download on the Web site. We pressed singles for radio, but the climate in America was so volatile and so polarized about the war that no radio station would touch it. It got shunned all the way around." The Beginning... Lyrics

Last night was the last night
    You'll ever spend alone
    Couldn't wait
Did it in the living room
Soon as I saw you, baby, I had plans
Plans to do it 'til we have a baby
Even if the world is crazy
Pick some names, boy or girl
Then we'll change, change the world

So after you change your clothes
Girl, if you change your mind
    I'm ready, whatever time

    It's the beginning of forever
    You don't have to go
    Sometimes you just know
    It's the beginning of forever
    It don't have to end
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh

Last time was the last time
    I was worn and done
You the best, that's why I want another one
Soon as I saw you, baby, I had plans
Planned to take you to my elevator
And cook a little breakfast later
Pick a place and go there, girl
Then we'll change, change the world

So after you change your clothes
Girl, if you change your mind
    I'm ready, whatever time

    It's the beginning of forever
    You don't have to go
    Sometimes you just know
    It's the beginning of forever
    It don't have to end
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh

    The Beginning...
  • This promo single is from John Legend's Love in the Future album. The track was produced by long-term collaborator Dave Tozer and Hit-Boy, whose credits collectively include Jay-Z, Rihanna and Mary J Blige. It was written by Roc Nation singer-songwriter James Fauntleroy, who has penned songs for and with the likes of Drake, Big Sean and Justin Timberlake.
  • Tozer told SonicScoop about the production of spacy, minimal track: "It's very minimal with some haunting sounds," he said. "I'm using the sounds of the Mellotron a lot, giving the track depth and heavy mood."
  • The track samples "Winter Song" by Sarah Bareilles and Ingrid Michelson. Hit Boy brought in the basic sample and basic drum pattern for the song.
  • Like many of the other Love in The Future tracks, this song concerns Legend's relationship with his partner, the model Chrissy Teigen. The lyrics were inspired by his expectancy of a happy future with his new girl after their first night spent together.
  • When Legend showcased Love In The Future in front of an intimate crowd in New York City, he revealed that Chrissy was left blushing after playing this song to her parents. "She got a little embarrassed. The second line is 'We couldn't wait, we did it in the living room,'" he laughed.
