World I Used To Know Lyrics

    World I Used To Know
  • Ryan Star told Artist Direct the story of this song: "I had this idea," he said. "You're driving home for thanksgiving break from college, and you're back in that town you grew up in. Movies have been made of it. Everything seems different. It brings back those memories for you. There's a nostalgic sound to the song. There's an eighties thing going on in the music. There's that idea of 'The last time I was here, I was thinking this way.'"

Star added: "It's not such a sad song, but the line, 'We wished for lots of things when we were seventeen and we're waiting for it now'—to me, that's the song. It's the honest song I can say. In the years of Facebook and Twitter, everybody's bragging about everything going on. The truth is I think we're all really discontent [Laughs]. We're looking at everyone else like, 'Am I really the only one who's not where I want to be?' It's not saying, 'I failed. I'm bitter. You fu--ing lied to me!' [Laughs] It's more like, 'I'm fu--ing ready, man. Where are you? I'm doing everything right.' I might know enough people out there who are working hard and waiting for that sign."
  • The song features guest vocals by Naya Rivera, who is best known for her portrayal of Santana Lopez on the Fox television series Glee.

    Out Of Space
  • The repeated Reggae-sounding line is often misheard. You may find some lyrics on the internet that say the Jamaican singer sings, "I'm gone sent into outer space" or "I've gone sending to outer space." The original line is "I'm gonna send him to outa space, to find another race." It's from the Reggae song "Chase The Devil" by Max Romeo & The Upsetters, and it also appears in the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
  • The Prodigy's main songwriter Liam Howlett told Q magazine March 2008: "It's the 'kind' Prodigy record. We still play it and everyone starts singing along."

The Ghost Of The Mountain Lyrics

    The Ghost Of The Mountain
  • Vocalist Gary Lightbody explained the album's "ghost" references to The Sun: "The first song I wrote for the album was the title track and the male character dies in that song, so I thought, s---, what do I do now? I've just killed him' So each song is about a memory of their lives."

"I guess it's a little haunted," he added, "ghosts just keep popping up. I didn't consciously add the word, it just appeared naturally a number of times."

"By the end of the recording, the first track I wrote was the obvious title track as it seemed to link everything together."
  • The Ghost Of The Mountain album was recorded at producer Jacknife Lee's home studio in Topanga Canyon in California. The view from the locale graces the LP's cover.
  • This Gospel-Soul song is so crushingly sad that Lightbody claims to have broken down and cried after he'd written it.
  • Every song on The Ghost Of The Mountain album is a chapter in the story of two lovers on the run from the law. Gary Lightbody explained to MTV News: "The first album was written about invented characters and this album continues their story. Each song picks them up at different points in their life, so in terms of narrative storytelling it's sort of like Tarantino."

"It's an American story," he added: "A boy and a girl, that met in the first song of the first album, who have been through hell and back."

    Everybody Is A Star
  • This song is about how everyone is equal and how people try to change themselves to be what the media wants them to be. For black individuals, it can be about how we try to change ourselves to "act white" but in the end the system brings us down, yet we bring ourselves back up with the help of our people.
  • This was released as a double-A-side single with "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)." The single went to #1 in the US, so under Billboard methodology at the time, the chart position is attributed to both songs combined.
  • Like many Sly & the Family Stone songs of this era - "Everyday People" and "Stand!" among them - "Everybody Is A Star" has a message of togetherness and self-worth. These song were set against joyful melodies that kept them from sounding preachy. They went over very well at live shows where a sense of community formed.

    Crazy Lyrics

Tell me what's wrong with society
When everywhere I look I see
Young girls dying to be on tv
They won't stop til they've reached their dreams
    Diet pills, surgery
    Photoshopped pictures in magazines
Telling them how they should be
It doesn't make sense to me

    Is everybody going Crazy?
    Is anybody gonna save me?
Can anybody tell me what's going on
    Tell me what's going on
If you open your eyes you'll see
    That something is wrong

I guess things are not how they used to be
    There's no more normal families
    Parents act like enemies
Making kids feel like it's world war 3
    No one cares
    No one's there
I guess we're all just too damn busy
    And money's our first priority
It doesn't make sense to me

    Is everybody going crazy?
    Is anybody gonna save me?
Can anybody tell me what's going on
    Tell me what's going on
If you open your eyes you'll see
    That something is wrong

    Is everybody going crazy?
    Is everybody going crazy?

Tell me what's wrong with society
When everywhere I look I see
    Rich guys driving big SUVs
When kids are starving in the street
    No one cares
    No one likes to share
    I guess life's unfair

    Is everybody going crazy?
    Is anybody gonna save me?
Can anybody tell me what's going on
    Tell me what's going on
If you open your eyes you'll see
    That something something is wrong
    Is everybody going crazy?

    Where You Stand Lyrics

Bumper car me left or right
    I’ll take a thousand knocks
There’s a happy man in there
And you won’t blink your eyes
Like all the things you lost before I
Right where you left me you know-oh
Like all the things you found
    Mmm mmm
Don’t taste them just swallow them whole

    I forfeit my time
    And wait
While you make up your mind
    So tell me
If you ever find your flag
Cause I will be right by you Where You Stand

Lift me up or tear me down
    I’ll stand right up again
    There’s happy soul in there
But you won’t let him in
Like all the things we say before me
Crumble and fall to the floor
Like all the things we try
    Aye aye
I know where it’s headed and so

    I forfeit my time
And wait while you re-make up your mind up
    So tell me
If you ever find your flag
Cause I will be right by you where you stand
Oh I will be right by you where you stand
    I will deliver
Where you stand I will not fall
Where you stand there is no ocean
Nor a river nor a shore

    I fall into line
And wait while you make up your mind
So tell me if you ever find your flag

    I forfeit my time
    And wait
While you make up your mind
    So tell me
If you ever find your flag
Cause I will be right by you where you stand
Oh I will be right by you where you stand
Oh I will be right by you where you stand

    Where You Stand
  • This life-affirming song is the first single and title track from the Scottish Indie band Travis' seventh studio album. It was released on April 30, 2013. The single was accompanied by the shorter radio mix, which also uses more of an orchestration on the chorus.
  • The song was written by Travis bassist Dougie Payne and London singer-songwriter Holly Partridge. The latter wrote, sung and played guitar for female rock band The Shebeats, who have supported Razorlight, Pete Doherty, and the Maccabees amongst others. She has also sung backing vocals for Ben Folds.
  • Holly Partridge penned the lyrics. Vocalist Fran Healy told The Sun: "I think it is about remaining with something even when it isn't working. We often give up at the first sign of difficulty but if you have the will there is always the way."
  • The Where You Stand album was recorded at Ocean Sound Recordings, Giske, in northwest Norway and Hansa Tonstudio, Berlin. The cover photograph was taken out of the door of the Norwegian studio by Healy. He told The Sun: "The cows wandered into that shot and we didn't see them until looking later. We couldn't have placed them better."

    Counterclockwise Lyrics

    Counterclockwise
  • In a November 17, 2005 Boulder Dirt article, Clyne explained that this song was about free thinking and expressing yourself, but is up to the listener to interpret. Said Clyne: "What we have is pieces of art. We assign them some degree of message and humble meaning - at least in our own hearts - and we put it out there to the people. And if they respond, then they pay for it with a dollar bill. And if so, we're lucky; we're not only artists, but we also get to make a living."
  • "Counterclockwise," says singer/songwriter Roger Clyne in a podcast on DailyCamera.com, "was meant to endorse free thinking. I tried to use images, like lightening my load in some way. For example, 'I bought a pancho and sandals, threw away my shoes' - I'm unclad, and trying to stand on the terra firma of the truth. 'Brought a toothbrush and a razor I probably won't use,' those things are something that we use before we gather ourselves, and prim and proper ourselves up for social interaction. 'Hit the track, turned my back on the headline news' - well, that's a liberating thing. Like, go on some grand adventure and turn your back on whatever huge societal expectations may be levied on you. And then 'I'm on my way to meet to the moon on the bay where she's rising big and full and blue'; the moon is a wonderful symbol of awakening in the night, of glowing in the dark, so to speak. So there, there's my first verse of 'Counterclockwise.' And it was meant to be something that would endorse individuals becoming unbound and unwound, such that they can express themselves freely, and hopefully with dignity, tolerance, and passion that won't advocate a predatory lifestyle. That's what that one's meant to do." (Get more in our Roger Clyne interview. His website is azpeacemakers.com .)

    Strife Lyrics

    My anxiety's clawing
    Out from deep within me
It burns within as my throat begins to cauterize

    This negativity's leeching
    Any shred of composure
Rationale has decayed and left me bound in madness

    I reach for calm
I starve for a balance unknown
This burden tortures me deep in my soul

I've found that Strife won't make the bleeding stop
Nor will it take away the pain
I feel like this search is all in vain
And I struggle to find my way

How I yearn for the silence
For an end to the voices
The calamity grows and the deafness leads to disarray

    Guilt buries me alive
    In a coffin criticized
I shouldered the blame and dug this hole for me to lay in

    I reach for calm
I starve for a balance unknown
This burden tortures me deep in my soul

I've found that strife won't make the bleeding stop
Nor will it take away the pain
I feel like this search is all in vain
And I struggle to find my way

I've found that strife won't make the bleeding stop
Nor will it take away the pain
I feel like this search has been all in vain
And I struggle to find my way

I've found that strife won't make the bleeding stop
Nor will it take away the pain
I feel like this search is all in vain

    Strife
  • This was released as the first single from Trivium's Vengeance Falls album. The song was performed live for the first time on August 1, 2013 at the Resurrection Fest at Viveiro in Spain.
  • Trivium bassist Paolo Gregoletto discussed the song in a track by track breakdown on his website : "'Strife' grew on me big time throughout the recording. It went from being a song I was unsure of to a definite first single (which was a close one between 'Vengeance Falls' and this one)."

He continued: "The intro is fu--ing massive and will give anyone that likes guitar tone a boner guaranteed. The verse vocals have Matt starting off in a lower register, gradually climbing into a more pissed off menacing voice with some screams layered in."
  • The song's music video was filmed in July 2013 at Studio One in Orlando, Florida and directed by Ramon Boutviseth, who has previously worked with Darkest Hour, Incubus and All That Remains.

    Veronica Lyrics

Is it all in that pretty little head of yours?
What goes on in that place in the dark?
Well I used to know a girl and I could have sworn
    That her name was Veronica

Well she used to have a carefree mind of her own
And a delicate look in her eye
These days I'm afraid she's not even sure
    If her name is Veronica

Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes,
    Veronica has gone to hide?
And all the time she laughs at those who shout
Her name and steal her clothes
    Veronica
    Veronica

Did the days drag by? Did the favors wane?
Did he roam down the town all the while?
Will you wake from your dream, with a wolf at the door,
    Reaching out for Veronica

Well it was all of sixty-five years ago
When the world was the street where she lived
And a young man sailed on a ship in the sea
    With a picture of Veronica

    On the "Empress of India"
And as she closed her eyes upon the world
And picked upon the bones of last week's news
She spoke his name out loud again

Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes,
    Veronica has gone to hide?
And all the time she laughs at those who shout
Her name and steal her clothes
    Veronica
    Veronica

Veronica sits in her favorite chair
And she sits very quiet and still
And they call her a name that they never get right
And if they don't then nobody else will

But she used to have a carefree mind of her own
With devilish look in her eye
Saying "You can call me anything you like,
    But my name is Veronica"

Do you suppose, that waiting hands on eyes,
    Veronica has gone to hide?
And all the time she laughs at those who shout
Her name and steal her clothes
    Veronica

    Veronica
  • This song tells the story of an old lady who lives in a nursing home. She lives a quiet and still existence as she gradually loses her memory. It was inspired by Costello's grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
  • Paul McCartney wrote this with Costello. The lyrics are reminiscent of McCartney's Beatles song "Eleanor Rigby."

This was the first song to come from McCartney and Costello's co-writing relationship. Other songs the duo wrote include Costello's tracks "So Like Candy" and "Playboy to A Man," and McCartney's "My Brave Face" and "You Want Her Too."

Hard to believe, but McCartney was getting a lot of bad press around this time, as he was still feuding with his former Beatles associates and refused to attend The Beatles 1988 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Costello said in a 1989 interview with On The Street: "I know some people have very bad preconceptions about Paul McCartney, but I'm involved to the extent that I've written a bunch of songs with him as well. I know he's a really good bass player, so I'm not too bothered about what anyone thinks about him playing on my record. I don't think it reflects at all on my perception of myself as a songwriter."
  • This was Costello's first big hit in the United States. Seems Elvis prefers niche adulation to widespread commercial success, which might account for his lack of chart success. This song, in particular, is one he struggled with. He explained to NME in 1996: "As soon as you make a record, particularly if it becomes a big success, it doesn't belong to you any more, it's that 'Wah Boo!' situation. A similar thing happened with 'Veronica' in America. I never liked it. And recently I did this show with Steve (Nieve, Attraction's keyboardist), and I changed the key and the whole song changed completely. Suddenly I didn't have to think about the record. It went back to why I wrote it, how I wrote it about my grandmother and it really meant something to me, and I kind of regained it. I'd got my song back from the evil success that it had had."

    First Time Caller Lyrics

    Darling, we're starting, she said
We go alive in a heartbeat
Waiting for something in my car
A little hope out of nothing
And through the hum on the line

She said I was a First Time Caller
    But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
She said I was a first time caller
    But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you

Falling like trash from the sky
I hit a patchwork of loneliness, crooked and wild
Hung from the stars and dropped through the night
To a heatwave in hard placelessness, neon tiles
And I got nothing but time

She said I was a first time caller
    But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you
She said I was a first time caller
    But a long time listener
I've been waiting a while to talk to you

I want you to love me
    More than I love you
Tell me if that's something you can do
I want you to love me
    More than I love you

    First Time Caller
  • This orchestral, synthesizer-tinged song is from Big TV, a concept album about a girl who leaves her boyfriend for the big city to see her absentee father. This song captures their reunion when she rings a relationship phone-in show. Bassist and lyricist Charles Cave told NME: "That's the song a lot of people have been very moved by, even though it's a pop song. He says. 'Ok, what do you want from me?' And she says the only thing that could ever make anything right is if they end up in a relationship where he cared for her more than she cared for him. That topic features regularly on the record if there is ever an equal relationship where you respect and love each other in exactly the same weight. I'm not sure it does exist."
