Control Lyrics

I look up
Yeah and I take my time
I'mma take my time, woah
Power moves only

Boy I'm 'bout my business on business
I drink liquor on liquor
I had women on women
Yeah that's bunk bed bitches
I've done lived more than an eighty year old man still kickin'
Cause they live for some moments, and I live for a livin'
But this for the girls that barely let me get to first base
On some ground ball shit
Cause now I run my city on some town hall shit
They prayin' on my motherfuckin' downfall bitch like a drought but
You gon' get this rain like it's May weather
G.O.O.D. Music, Ye weather
Champagne just tastes better
They told me I never boy, never say never
Swear flow special like an infant's first steps
I got paid to reverse debts
Then I finally found a girl that reverse stress
So now I'm talkin' to the reaper to reverse death
So I can kick it with my granddad, take him for a ride
Show him I made somethin' out myself and not just tried
Show him the house I bought the fam, let him tour inside
No matter how far ahead I get, I always feel behind
In my mind, but fuck tryin' and not doin'
Cause not doin' is somethin' a nigga not doin'
I said fuck tryin' and not doin'
Cause not doin' is somethin' a nigga not doin'
I grew up to Em, B.I.G., and Pac bitch, and got ruined
So until I got the same crib B.I.G. had in that Juicy vid
I can't motherfuckin' stop movin'
Go against me, you won't stop losin'
From the city where every month is May-
Day at home, spray your dome
Niggas get sprayed up like AK was cologne for a paycheck or loan
Yeah I know that shit ain't fair
They say that Detroit ain't got a chance, we ain't even got a mayor
You write your name with a Sharpie, I write mine in stone
I knew that the world was for the taking and it wouldn't take long
We on, tryna be better than everybody that's better than everybody
Rep Detroit, everybody, Detroit versus everybody
I'm so fuckin' first class I could spit up on every pilot
The city's my Metropolis, feel it, it's metabolic
And I'm over niggas sayin' they're the hottest niggas
Then run to the hottest niggas just to stay hot
I'm one of the hottest because I flame drop
Drop fire, and not because I'm name droppin'
Hall of Fame droppin'
And I ain't takin' shit from nobody unless they're OG's
Cause that ain't the way of an OG
So I GO collect more G's, every dollar
Never changed though, I'm just the new version of old me
Forever hot headed but never got cold feet
Got up in the game won't look back at my old seats
Clique so deep we take up the whole street
I need a bitch so bad that she take up my whole week, Sean Don

Miscellaneous minds are never explainin' their minds
Devilish grin for my alias aliens to respond
Peddlin' sin, thinkin' maybe when you get old you realize
I'm not gonna fold or demise
(I don't smoke crack, motherfucker I sell it!)
Bitch, everything I rap is a quarter piece to your melon
So if you have a relapse, just relax and pop in my disc
Don't pop me no fucking pill, I'mma a pop you and give you this

Tell Flex to drop a bomb on this shit
So many bombs, ring the alarm like Vietnam in this shit
So many bombs, make Farrakhan think Saddam in this bitch
One at a time, I line 'em up and bomb on they mom
While she watchin' the kids
I'm in a destruction mode if the gold exists
I'm important like the pope, I'm a muslim on pork
I'm Makaveli's offspring, I'm the king of New York
King of the Coast, one hand, I juggle them both
The juggernaut's all in your jugular, you take me for jokes
Live in the basement, church pews and funeral faces
Cartier bracelets for my women friends I'm in Vegas
Who the fuck y'all thought it's supposed to be?
If Phil Jackson came back, still no coachin' me
I'm uncoachable, I'm unsociable
Fuck y'all clubs, fuck y'all pictures, your Instagram can gobble these nuts
Gobble dick up 'til you hiccup, my big homie Kurupt
This the same flow that put the rap game on a crutch
I've seen niggas transform like villain Decepticons
Mollies'll prolly turn these niggas to fuckin' Lindsay Lohan
A bunch of rich ass white girls lookin' for parties
Playin with Barbies, wreck the Porsche before you give 'em the car key
Judgement to the monarchy, blessings to Paul McCartney
You called me a black Beatle, I'm either that or a Marley
(I don't smoke crack motherfucker I sell it)
I'm dressed in all black, this is not for the fan of Elvis
I'm aimin' straight for your pelvis, you can't stomach me
You plan on stumpin' me? Bitch I’ve been jumped before you put a gun on me
Bitch I put one on yours, I'm Sean Connery
James Bonding with none of you niggas, climbing 100 mil in front of me
And I'm gonna get it even if you're in the way
And if you're in it, better run for Pete's sake
I heard the barbershops be in great debates all the time
Bout who's the best MC? Kendrick, Jigga and Nas
Eminem, Andre 3000, the rest of y'all
New niggas just new niggas, don't get involved
And I ain't rockin no more designer shit
White T’s and Nike Cortez, this is red Corvettes anonymous
I'm usually homeboys with the same niggas I'm rhymin' wit
But this is hip hop and them niggas should know what time it is
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale
Pusha T, Meek Millz, A$AP Rocky, Drake
Big Sean, Jay Electron', Tyler, Mac Miller
I got love for you all but I'm tryna murder you niggas
Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you niggas
They dont wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you niggas
What is competition? I'm tryna raise the bar high
Who tryna jump and get it? You better off tryna skydive
Out the exit window of 5 G5’s with 5 grand
With your granddad as the pilot he drunk as fuck tryna land
With the hand full of arthritis and popping prosthetic leg
Bumpin Pac in the cockpit so the shit that pops in his head
Is an option of violence, someone heard the stewardess said
That your parachute is a latex condom hooked to a dread

You could check my name on the books
I Earth, Wind, and Fire’d the verse, then rained on the hook
The legend of Dorothy Flowers proclaimed from the roof
The tale of magnificent king who came from the nooks
Of the wild magnolia, mother of many soldiers
We live by every single word she ever told us
Watch over your shoulders
And keep a tin of beans for when the weather turns the coldest
The Lord is our shepherd, so our cup runneth over
Put your trust in the Lord but tether your Chevy Nova
I’m spittin' this shit for closure
And God is my witness, so you could get it from Hova
For all you magicians that’s fidgeting with the cobra
I’m silent as a rock, ‘cause I came from a rock
That’s why I came with a rock, then signed my name on the Roc
Draw a line around some Earth, then put my name on the plot
Cause I endured a lot of pain for everything that I got
The eyelashes like umbrellas when it rains from the heart
And the tissue is like an angel kissin' you in the dark
You go from blind sight to hindsight, passion of the Christ
Right, to baskin' in the limelight, it take time to get your mind right
Jay Electricity, PBS mysteries
In a lofty place, tangling with Satan over history
You can’t say shit to me, Alhamdulillah
It’s strictly by faith that we made it this far

Control
  • This No I.D. seven-minute track starts off with Sean talking about his home city, family, and relationships. Kendrick Lamar takes no prisoners on his middle verse, before Jay Electronica anchors the cut. Sean described it as: "Straight rap... I'm talking 7min s--t... Grimey s--t."
  • Kendrick Lamar's 64-bar rap blew up the internet, upstaging the other two rappers in the process:

"I'm usually homeboys with the same niggas I'm rhymin' wit
But this is hip-hop and them niggas should know what time it is
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale
Pusha T, Meek Millz, A$AP Rocky, Drake
Big Sean, Jay Electron', Tyler, Mac Miller
I got love for you all but I'm tryna murder you niggas
Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you niggas
They dont wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you niggas
What is competition? I'm tryna raise the bar high."

Lamar's challenge to Hip-Hop's big guns to raise their game and top him caused a stir not only among fans, but other rappers as well with many responding with their own rhymes.
  • The song is a leftover track originally recorded for Sean's Hall of Fame record. It didn't make the album due to a sampling issue stemming from No I.D.'s beat, so was released online for free.
  • Jay Electronica told Revolt TV that he wasn't bothered by being eclipsed by Lamar's verse. "I like the song and the stir it's causing," he said. "It's good for rap music."

Jay Elec added that he only found out that Kendrick also had a verse just days before the track was released online. "A month or two ago, Big Sean asked me to be on this record with him for his album. He had a demo hook on it at the time. I did my verse and sent it back," Jay explained. "I found out a couple days before it was released that Kendrick had put a verse on it."
  • Some fans speculated that Big Sean switched his bars to match Kendrick's verse, but the Detroit MC told Vibe magazine that he did no such thing. "I started the song, I laid my verse first. I sent it to Kendrick and Jay Elec too. And then Kendrick sent that verse back... So when I heard it I was kind of like cracking up," said Sean. "When I heard that verse I was like, 'Man I'm not about to go back and change my verse — that's cheating."
  • Sean speaks about the problems of his home city when he raps: "They say that Detroit ain't got a chance, we ain't even got a mayor." He explained on the Rap Genius website: "Detroit's the only city where the government had to come and take control of the mayors responsibilities. so officially there's no mayor… technically. Detroit is 15.8 billion dollars in debt and people are literally giving up on the city. i feel nobody is talking about this type s--t in rap. I hear it on CNN but half the people i know don't even watch CNN."
  • Lamar said in a call with the radio station Power 106 that his boastful explosive verse, in which he called himself the king of New York, had been misunderstood. "I didn't know there would be so much speculation, I just want to rap," he said.

"I think it's a case of maybe I should dumb down my lyrics just a little bit," Lamar added. "The irony of that line is that the people who actually understood it and got it were the actual kings of New York, you know, me sitting down with them this past week, and them understanding, it's not actually about being the king of whatever coast, it's about leaving a mark as great as Biggie, as great as Pac."
  • Speaking with Vibe magazine, Jay Electronica revealed that he wanted the song for his debut album. "It was me and Big Sean, we had verses on there," he said. "And then when he told me it wasn't on his album, I was going to use it for my album. And then he told me the day before it came out that, 'yo, Kendrick put a verse on it, we're gonna put it out.' It's a good thing for hip-hop music because hip-hop has being laying dormant for a long time."

  • This song was a salute to "Field Hollers"... where African American slaves would come up with these songs, also called "Work Songs" on plantations. The song is written about Hendrix' mother Lucille.
  • The line, "Two strange men fightin' to the death over me today" is a reference to 2 men claiming to be Hendrix' father in an effort to capitalize on his success and money. Neither man was Al Hendrix who was known to be his real father (Jimi's real middle name was Allen).
  • Recording this song was quite a process. Hendrix did pretty much everything himself, including playing bass. He also messed around with various phasing effects that show up on the song.

  • This is a track from Where You Stand, the seventh studio album from the Scottish Rock band Travis. The LP had a working title of "In The Middle Of," a lyric which begins each of this song's verses. Singer Fran Healy explained to The Sun: "There was a feeling in our time away, becoming fathers, turning 40, having recorded six albums, that we were in the middle of a lot of our journeys."

    The Green Door Lyrics

Midnight, one more night without sleeping,
Watching till the morning comes creeping.
Green door, what's that secret you're keeping?

    There's an old piano
    And they play it hot behind The Green Door;
    Don't know what they're doing
But they laugh a lot behind the green door.
    Wish they'd let me in
So I could find out what's behind the green door.

    Knocked once, tried to tell them I'd been there;
    Door slammed, hospitality's thin there.
Wonder just what's going on in there.

    Saw an eyeball peeping
    Through a smoky cloud behind the green door;
When I said "Joe sent me"
Someone laughed out loud behind the green door.
    All I want to do
Is join the happy crowd behind the green door.

Midnight, one more night without sleeping,
Watching till the morning comes creeping.
Green door, what's that secret you're keeping?

Green door what's that secret you're keeping?

    Green door!

    The Green Door
  • Bob Davie wrote this and played the honky-tonk piano. It was inspired by a popular music club in Dallas, Texas where the kids who weren't allowed in hung around outside a yellow door. Presumably "green door" sounded better.
  • Jim Lowe was a DJ and Country singer who recorded this in an apartment in Greenwich Village. Backing vocals were by The High Fives.
  • In the UK, Frankie Vaughan's cover version reached #2.
  • In 1981, the '50s revivalist Shakin' Stevens covered this and took this song to the top of the UK charts.

    Survival Lyrics

This is Survival of the fittest
    This is do or die
This is the winner takes it all so take it all

Wasn't ready to be no millionaire, I was ill-prepared
I was prepared to be ill though, the skill was there
From the beginning, it wasn't 'bout the ends
It was 'bout busting raps and standing for something, fuck an acronym
Cut the fucking act like you're happy, I'm fucking back again
With another anthem, why stop when it doesn't have to end?
It ain't over 'til I say it's over, enough when I say enough
Throw me to them wolves and close the gate up
I'm afraid of what'll happen to them wolves
When the thought of being thrown into an alligator pit, I salivate at it
Wait is up, hands up like it's 12 noon, nah, homie
Hold them bitches straighter up, wave 'em 'til you dislocate a rotator cuff
Came up rough, came to ruffle feathers, nah, egos
I ain't deflate enough, last chance to make this whole stadium erupt!

This is survival of the fittest
    This is do or die
This is the winner takes it all so take it all

I can see the finish line with each line that I finish
I'm so close to my goals I can almost pole vault over the goal post
And if I don't got enough in the tank, maybe I can just siphon enough
To fill up this last can, man will I survive in this climate or what?
They said I was washed up, and got a blood bath
I'm not a rapper, I'm an adapter, I can adjust
Plus I can just walk up to a mic and just bust so,
Floor's open if you'd like to discuss
Top 5 in this mu'fucka' and if I don't make the cut
What, like I give a fuck, I'mma light this bitch up like I'm driving a truck
To the side of a pump, 0 to 60 hop in and gun it
Like G-Unit without the hyphen, I'm hyping em up
And if there should ever come a time where my life's in a rut
And I look like I might just give up, eh you might've mistook
Me for bowing out I ain't taking a bow, I'm stabbing myself
With a fucking knife in the gut, while I'm wiping my butt!
'Cause I just shitted on the mic, and I like getting cut
I get excited at the sight of my blood, you're in a fight with a nut
'Cause I'mma fight 'til I die or win
Biting the dust it'll just make me angrier, wait
Let me remind you of what got me this far, picture me quitting
Now draw a circle around it and put a line through it slut
    It's survival of what?

This is survival of the fittest
    This is do or die
This is the winner takes it all so take it all
    So take it all

So get your ideas, stack your ammo
But don't come unless you come to battle, I'm mad now jump in the saddle
This is it, it's what you eat, sleep, piss and shit
Live, breathe, your whole existence just consists of this
Refuse to quit, fuse is lit, can't de-fuse the wick
I don't do this music shit, I lose my shit
Ain't got shit to lose, it's the moment of truth
It's all I know how to do, as soon as I get thrown in the booth, I spit
But my respect is overdue, I'm showing you the flow no one do
'Cause I don't own no diploma for school, I quit!
So there's nothing for me to fall back on, I know no other trades
So you'd better trade your fucking mics in for some tool-box-es
'Cause you'll never take my pride from me
It'll have to be pried from me, so pull out your pliers and your screw-drive-rs
But I want you to doubt me, I don't want you to buh-lieve
'Cause this is something that I must use to suc-ceed
And if you don't like me then fuck you!
Self es-teem must be fucking shooting through-the-roof 'cause trust me
My skin is too thick and bul-let proof to touch me
I can see why the fuck I disgust you
I must be a-llergic to failure 'cause every ime I come close to it
I just sneeze, but I just go atchoo then achieve!

This is survival of the fittest
    This is do or die
This is the winner takes it all so take it all
    So it take it all

    Survival
  • This track was premiered in the trailer for the video game, Call of Duty: Ghosts. The clip starts in a snow-covered forest with footage from the violent military game before Liz Rodrigues sings accompanied by rock guitars, "This is survival of the fittest. This is do or die."

Eminem jumps in accompanied by the sounds of gunshots flying, "Wasn't ready to be a millionaire. .I was ill-prepared. I was prepared to be ill though, the skill was there."

Em said: "The song's about fighting back and it seems like it fits 'Ghost' perfectly.
  • This was the third time an Eminem song had been used to promote a Call of Duty game. "'Till I Collapse" was used in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 trailer, and "Won't Back Down" in the Call of Duty: Black Ops trailer.
  • This was the first solo track dropped by Eminem since his 2010 Recovery album though he had appeared on singles with labelmates 50 Cent, Slaughterhouse and Skylar Grey since. Em snarls over DJ Khali's gritty, ominous rock and roll beat.

    "I'm fu--ing back again
With another anthem, why stop when it doesn't have to end?
It ain't over 'til I say it's over – enough when I say enough."

Yes Slim Shady's back and he's not given up rapping yet - as he said during his performance with the Shady Records roster at the 2011 BET Awards: "Imma rap till' I'm fossil fuel."
  • Liz Rodrigues is a member of DJ Khalil's group, The New Royales. The Toronto-based singer also appeared on the Recovery tracks, "Almost Famous" and "25 to Life," as well as co-writing and featuring in the video for Pitbull's "Can't Stop Me Now" single.

    Rainbow In The Dark Lyrics

When there's lightning, you know it always brings me down
'Cause it's free and I see that it's me
    Who's lost and never found
I cry out for magic, I feel it dancing in the light
It was cold, I lost my hold
To the shadows of the night

No sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a Rainbow In The Dark
    A rainbow in the dark

Do your demons, do they ever let you go?
When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside
Is it someone that you know
You're just a picture, your're an image caught in time
    We're a lie, you and I
    We're words without a rhyme

There's no sign of the morning coming
You've been left on your own
Like a rainbow in the dark
Just a rainbow in the dark, yeah

When I see lightning, you know it always brings me down
'Cause it's free and I see that it's me
    Who's lost and never found
Feel the magic, I feel it floating in the air
But it's fear, and you'll hear
    It calling you beware

    Look out
There's no sight of the morning coming
There's no sight of the day
You've been left on your own
    Like a rainbow
Like a rainbow in the dark, yeah
You're a rainbow in the dark
Just a rainbow in the dark
    No sign of the morning
You're a rainbow in the dark

    Rainbow In The Dark
  • One of the great depression metaphors, in this song lead singer Ronnie James Dio is feeling isolated and trapped, unable to release the tremendous potential inside him - like a rainbow in the dark. Dio has mentioned his time as Black Sabbath lead singer as inspiration for the lyrics; he felt "alone and rejected" when he left the band. Along with Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice, he formed Dio in 1983.
  • Along with "Holy Diver," this is one of Dio's most popular songs. It's heavy on keyboards, which helped make the song more accessible to a Pop audience, something Van Halen did with great success on their album 1984.
  • VH1 named this #13 on their list of the Greatest Metal Songs.

    Sadako Folding Cranes Lyrics

    Sadako Folding Cranes
  • Sadako Sasaki was a Japanese girl irradiated in Hiroshima in 1945 when she was 2 years old. She died ten years later and is to this day a symbol of innocent victims of war. Sadoka's ambition was to fold 1,000 origami cranes to get a wish from the gods. Viers has placed inside the Warp And Weft album some paper to be folded. For every crane that is returned, she pledges to give a dollar to a peace group.
  • The Warp and Weft album title is a weaving term. Veirs explained to American Songwriter magazine: "It refers to the two directions of yarn on a loom. I weave in old folk songs, references to other artists and lots of different and lyrical elements (dark and light) so for me the title works on multiple levels."

    Stand and Deliver Lyrics

I'm the dandy highwayman who you're too scared to mention
I spend my cash on looking flash and grabbing your attention
The devil take your stereo and your record collection! (oh-oh)
The way you look you'll qualify for next year's old age pension!

Stand and Deliver your money or your life!
Try and use a mirror no bullet or a knife!

I'm the dandy highwayman so sick of easy fashion
The clumsy boots, peek-a-boo roots that people think so dashing
So what's the point of robbery when nothing is worth taking? (oh oh)
It's kind of tough to tell a scruff the big mistake he's making

Stand and deliver your money or your life!
Try and use a mirror no bullet or a knife!

And even though you fool your soul
    Your conscience will be mine
    All mine

We're the dandy highwaymen so tired of excuses
Of deep meaning philosophies where only showbiz loses
We're the dandy highwaymen and here's our invitation (oh oh)
"Throw your safety overboard and join our insect nation"

Stand and deliver your money or your life!
Try and use a mirror no bullet or a knife!

And even though you fool your soul
    Your conscience will be mine
    All mine

Qua qua da diddley qua qua da diddley
Qua qua da diddley qua qua da diddley

Stand and deliver your money or your life!
Stand and deliver your money or your life!

    Stand and Deliver
  • In the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Adam Ant said: "It's just stealing people's attention. I'm a very big history fan of certainly the Georgian era and I like the flamboyance and sexuality and bawdiness of the time. I've seen films like Tom Jones and I grew up going to Saturday morning pictures and seeing all these other influences. I put them all together and Stand And Deliver was just purely grabbing people's attention and using the whole sort of classical English highwayman feel as a theme."
  • The extravagant video was directed by Mike Mansfield and helped sell the song. It contained a hanging sequence that was considered too violent by some music program producers, so an edited version was issued which excluded the scene altogether. In Kutner and Leigh's book, Ant said: "The idea of the Stand And Deliver video was to create a Hollywood movie in 3 minutes."
  • This was Adam and the Ants' best selling single in the UK, selling 985,000 copies.
  • Ant's look in the video was based on the costume David Hemmings' character wore in the 1968 film The Charge of the Light Brigade. It was a 19th century British military look that Ant adapted. The video was a huge part of the song's success, as it gave an image to Ant's "dandy highwayman" character.

Old lab would jump out the back and fetch them up.
We’d drive for miles and miles and never once hit blacktop or change the dial.
One little country station was all there was.

Checking gates, fixing fence rows – that’s how my story goes.

If you want to know the real me, just turn the page in my Dirt Road Diary.
It’s right there for you to see, every kiss, every beer, every cotton field memory.
Tan legs and some Dixie Land delight, ridin’ round, windows down on a summer night.
I was there, and that was me. It's right here in my dirt road diary.

I remember when I turned sixteen I got a license and some gasoline.
Ain't a curve or a straight away we didn’t fly down.
If wasn’t the boys it was me and her by fire in a field or down on the river.
Every inch of that county was sacred ground.

I wish I knew where that old truck was.
If it could talk it could tell on us.

    It ain't a book underneath my bed;
Just a dusty memory lane burned in my head.

Tan legs and some Dixie Land delight, ridin’ round, windows down feeling right
I was there, that was me. It's right here in my dirt road diary.

Just ride around my little town and you’ll see how I wrote my dirt road diary.

    Dirt Road Diary
  • Bryan closes his Crash My Party album with this autobiographical track where he looks back at reliving his youth fixing fence posts next to his father and as he got older, reveling in "tan legs and some Dixieland delight." Bryan penned the song with Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson and Ben Hayslip.
  • Bryan told The Boot that he always tries to include at least one song about rural life. "'Dirt Road Diaries,' in my mind, is a perfect country guy song," he said. "It speaks to the hard-working guy and I'm excited for the fans to hear that one."
  • Luke Bryan's first headlining tour was named after this song. The Dirt Road Diaries Tour started on January 17, 2013 in Evansville, Indiana and visited a total of twenty cities before ending on March 23rd in Charlottesville, Virginia.

    Gotta Get Thru This Lyrics

If only I could get through this
If only I could get through this
    I gotta get through this
    I gotta get through this
    I gotta make it
    Gotta make it
    Make it through
Said I'm gonna get through this
    I gonna get through this
    I gotta take my
Gotta take my mind off you

Give me just a second & I'll be alright
Surely 1 more moment couldn't break my heart
Give me 'til tomorrow then ill be ok
Just another day & then ill hold you tight

When your love is fallin' like the rain
I close my eyes & it's gone again
When will I get the chance 2 say I love you
I pretend that you're already mine
That my heart ain't breakin' every time
    I look into your eyes

If only I could get through this
If only I could get through this
If only I could get through this
    God God
Gotta help me get through this

    I gotta get through this
    I gotta get through this

    Gotta Get Thru This
  • Bedingfield was inspired to write this while walking across Tower Bridge in London frustrated at being separated from a girl he was in love with from Leeds, in the north of England. The girl was a red haired American dancer named Gina, and he was upset that the distance between them was preventing him from pursuing her. Bedingfield went home and recorded this in his bedroom with a microphone plugged to his home computer using a Making Waves computer audio program.
  • The total cost of the recording was 1,500 pounds, and after pressing some of his own copies of the song, Bedingfield sent them to various DJs, and DJ EZ included it on a compilation. After hearing it, Polydor signed him the song became a big hit.

    Permawar Lyrics

You live to fight another day, and that day will come
We're fighting never-ending wars, for profit and fun
We're tired, we're tired, we're tired of Permawar

You live to die another day, we send you off with a gun
We're making money hand over fist, that's why we're never done
    We're tired, of keeping scores
We're tired, of what's in store
We're tired, we don't want anymore
    We're tired of PermaWar

I'm tired of building other nations

    Ceasefire, it's our only salvation

You live and die for the American Way, well that way is done
The bottom line remains the same, we're making cash by the ton

    We're tired, of keeping scores
We're tired, of what's in store
We're tired, we don't want anymore
    We're tired of PermaWar

    We're tired, of keeping scores
We're tired, of what's in store
We're tired, we don't want anymore

    We're tired of PermaWar

    Permawar
  • This was released as one of the intro tracks to Ministry's From Beer To Eternity album. The record was recorded at frontman Al Jourgensen 's 13th Planet compound in El Paso, Texas with guitarists Mike Scaccia and Sin Quirin, drummer Aaron Rossi and bassist Tony Campos. Three days after rough tracks for the songs were completed, Scaccia died from a heart attack he suffered onstage while playing a live show with his band Rigor Mattis.

The remaining Ministry members were absolutely devastated and Jourgensen announced in March 2013 that From Beer To Eternity would be the band's last ever album, as he didn't want to carry on without Scaccia. "Mikey was my best friend in the world and there's no Ministry without him", he told Noisey . "But I know the music we recorded together during the last weeks of his life had to be released to honor him. So after his funeral, I locked myself in my studio and turned the songs we had recorded into the best and last Ministry record anyone will ever hear. I can't do it without Mikey and I don't want to. So yes, this will be Ministry's last album."
  • Jourgensen recalled the recording of the album to Loudwire : "Me and Mikey, we would just jam around between country songs and we kept coming up with these riffs and Mikey kept going, 'Man we've got to put this out,'" remembered the frontman. "I kept telling him Ministry is done, but he's like, 'No, seriously dude. These riffs are cool; we have to put this out.' I kind of went into it begrudgingly and now I'm really quite happy with the result. I think this album came out like a great middle finger from me and Mikey as the final blow. So, I'm pretty happy with it."
  • The song's music video was shot in July 2013 at Jourgensen's Texan compound and directed by filmmaker/animator Zach Passero whose credits include Ministry's "Lieslieslies," "GhoulDiggers" and "99 Percenters," as well as the feature film Wicked Lake. The clip combines provocative news images taken from World War Two, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, with a bad acid trip. Jourgensen portrays three different personalities, representing three different points of view on America's persistence of war: the corrupt political leader, the predatory business man, and the passive observer.

Burning Of The Midnight Lamp Lyrics

    The morning is dead
    And the day is, too
There's nothing left here to meet me
    But the velvet moon
All my loneliness I have felt today
It's like a little more than enough
To make a man throw himself away

    And I continue
    To burn the midnight lamp
    Alone

Now the smiling portrait of you
Is still hangin' on my frowning wall
It really doesn't, really doesn't bother me too much at all
It's just the ever falling dust
That makes it so hard for me to see
That forgotten earring layin' on the floor
    Facing coldly towards the door

    I continue
    To burn the midnight lamp
    Lord, alone

    Loneliness is such a drag

So here I sit to face
    That same old fire place
Gettin' ready for the same old explosion
    Goin' through my mind
And soon enough time will tell,
About the circus in the wishing well
And someone who will buy and sell for me
    Someone to toll my bell

    And I continue
    To burn this old lamp
    Lord, alone
Darlin' can't ya hear me callin' you?
    So lonely
Gonna have to blow my mind
    Lonely

    Burning Of The Midnight Lamp
  • Hendrix wrote the lyrics on a flight from New York to Los Angeles in 1967. They express the confusion he felt at the time.
  • Hendrix: "That's really a song I'm proud of. Some people say this is the worst track we have ever done. I think it is the best. Even if the technique is not great, even if the sound is not clear and even if the lyrics can't be properly heard, this is a song that you often listen to and come back to. I don't play neither piano nor harpsichord, but I had managed to put together all these different sounds. It was the starting point."
  • Hendrix used a wah wah pedal on his guitar for this song. Frank Zappa was an influence on this.
  • The Sweet Inspirations, who often sang with Aretha Franklin, sang on this.
