Lightning Crashes Lyrics

Lightning Crashes a new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
The angel opens her eyes
The confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even close the door

Lightning crashes an old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
The angel closes her eyes
The confusion that was hers
Belongs now to the baby down the hall

[Chorus]
Oh now feel it, comin' back again
Like a rollin', thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin' from
The center of the earth again
I can feel it.

Lightning crashes a new mother cries
This moment she's been waiting for
The angel opens her eyes
Pale blue colored iris
Presents the circle
And puts the glory out to hide, hide

[Chorus: x3]

  • The band dedicated this to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time this song was written. Her brother in-law Cory told us the story:
The song's lyrics are mostly an analogy. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber. These lyrics are constantly misunderstood! Yes, Ed is speaking to the circle of life, but specifically to how Barb's life gave new life to many. The angel, the baby down the hall, the pale blue eyes (of Barb), the pain ("confusion")... the lyrics are wholly Ed's interpretation of his experience and perception of Barb's impact. Our family has become close with the most genuine and caring man who is still alive today (over 10 years later), who has Barb's heart beating in his chest! "Lightning Crashes" literally lives on.
  • At their concerts in the late 1990s, Live dedicated this to the victims of the tragedy at Columbine High School.
  • This was the biggest hit off the album and of Live's entire career. Throwing Copper was produced by Talking Heads guitarist Jerry Harrison.

  • The first track on Arkells third album, High Noon, is reminiscent of the song "Deadlines" that begins their critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2008 debut album, Jackson Square. In our interview with Arkells lead singer and guitarist, Max Kerman , he called "Fake Money" a "Deadlines: Part 2" because of their similar themes.
  • The band wanted to come out swinging with this tune on High Noon and showcase that at their core they are still a five-piece rock and roll band. "Fake Money" is Arkells first "protest song" and meant to be a fist-pumper.

The song is about people in the position of power such as business men and investment bankers who control money. They can sometimes act recklessly with other people’s money treating it like a fun game. They can behave like children with money causing disastrous outcomes rather than responsibly handling it. The opening verse of the song displays this meaning well:

    Oh, you're just a boy
    A little banker boy
    Everything's a game
    Now everyone's your toy
  • The title of the album was partly inspired by the 1952 western film High Noon starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly because of the cinematic theme of the album. The title was taken from a lyric in "Fake Money" when Kerman sings, "You're some cowboy at high noon."

In our interview with Kerman, he explained the meaning behind the title of the record, "I think at high noon there is a moment of complication and there should be some clarity after the fact. A lot of these songs are trying to provide that clarity."

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Lyrics

Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed him so hard

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

Once there was this girl who
Wouldn't go and change with the girls in the change room
But when they finally made her
They saw birthmarks all over her body
    She couldn't quite explain it
    They'd always just been there

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

But both the girl and boy were glad
Cause one kid had it worse than that

Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
They shook and lurched all over the church floor
    He couldn't quite explain it
    They'd always just gone there

  • The song tells the story of three children whose strange experiences seem normal to them. The theme is the strength of the family unit.
  • The Crash Test Dummies are Canadian. They began as a cover group while lead singer Brad Roberts studied to be a professor in English literature. Roberts played guitar in the group but did not sing because he thought his voice was too deep. A vocal coach convinced him that he had a good, distinctive voice, and Roberts' deep baritone made this stand out on the radio. Even today, very few people sing as low as he does on rock records.
  • In 2000, Roberts was nearly killed in a car accident, but escaped with a broken arm before his car exploded. The band is named after the devices used to test the effects of car accidents on humans. They once toured with Alanis Morissette, who might consider this ironic.
  • This was a success on the adult album alternative (AAA) format that was gaining momentum at the time. Other artists who found success there are the Cranberries and Counting Crows.
  • This was the group's only US Top 40 hit, although three years earlier they had a big song with "Superman's Dead," which reached US #56 and sold over 400,000 copies in Canada.
  • Talking Heads guitarist Jerry Harrison produced this. He has also produced other modern rock artists like Stroke 9, Live and No Doubt.
  • Between the title and the unconventional vocals, disc jockeys made lots of jokes about this when they played it. Some said it sounded like "Sylvester Stallone on Quaaludes."
  • The band released their first album in 1991 and put out the single "Superman's Song," which hit #56 in the US. "Superman's Song" was used as the B-Side of this.
  • As a result of this song, The Crash Test Dummies were nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy in 1994, even though they formed in the late '80s and released their first album in 1991.
  • This is the longest song title made up of one letter repeated. (thanks, Adam - Wrexham, Wales)
  • Like black licorice or the Grateful Dead, people tend to either love this or hate it. Despite its popularity, VH1 named it one of the "Top 50 worst songs of the '90s," outraging fans of the song. (thanks, Ricky - Cabot, AR)
  • The Crash Test Dummies once played at the MuchMusic awards singing "Weird Al" Yankovic's parody, "Headline News" with Yankovic. They both played the music and Brad Roberts sang in his low low voice. The Weird Al version calls for the sound of kazoos right at the end. Al wasn't expecting to have this feature live on stage when singing with Roberts, but was pleasantly surprised when all the Crash Test Dummies suddenly whipped out kazoos and started "quacking" through the end of the song. Come to Light Lyrics

    Ooh for a second there
    I felt peace and calm
    The underpass
    Would keep us from harm
    And the wipers moved
    Like some waving arms
    We were flashing headlights
    At coming cars

    But up in the distance
Even in the dead of night
If we can make it to the morning
    We can get things right
It's been a tough go lately
    I hate choosing sides
What we do in the darkness
    Will Come to Light, alright

Ooh and in times of fear
    You shelter me
    And you hold me close
    So tenderly
    And with my headphones on
    As I fall asleep
    You're my barricade
    From intruding dreams

    But up in the distance
Even in the dead of night
If we can make it to the mornin'
    We can get things right
It's been a tough go lately
    I hate choosing sides
What we do in the darkness
    Will come to light, alright

    Will come to light, alright
    Will come to light, alright

    Ooh and then silence fell
    When I picked up
    Those words hit me hard
    Like a one two punch
    So I went home
    To face the storm
    And the thought of you
    Keeps me warm

    But up in the distance
Even in the dead of night
If we can make it to the morning
    We can get things right
It's been a tough go lately
    I hate choosing sides
What we do in the darkness (yeah)
What we do in the darkness
    Comes to light

    When every thing went wrong
    You're keeping my head on
    And in time
    The things that hurt today
    Will begin to fade away

  • The first official single from Arkells third album High Noon is an Americana, driving type of song inspired by lead singer Max Kerman's love for sports.

Kerman reads a lot of sports journalism and loves the storylines that happen in sports culture. Arkells songs are often inspired by these stories - you can hear examples in "Kiss Cam" and "Agent Zero" from their 2011 sophomore album, Michigan Left.

"Come to Light" is another example. A line in the chorus, "What we do in the darkness, will come to light" borrows from a quotation from the mid-twentieth century African-American baseball player, Buck O'Neil. Kerman was reading a biography about O'Neil called The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's Life by Joe Posnanski. Kerman was moved by O'Neil's story about living in a time with segregation and having no luck going for him. Despite his struggles, O'Neil always had a positive attitude and treated people with compassion and respect.

Kerman explained in our interview the meaning of the song. "The general idea is just keeping your s--t together when you're going through a tough time," he said. "I was using the metaphor of being in the dark and just making it to the next day so you can sort everything out."

    Spending every dime

  • This was originally written in 1929 by legendary composer Irving Berlin ("God Bless America"). It was a hit for Fred Astaire in 1946 when he performed it in the movie Blue Skies. Taco pays homage to Astaire by including a tap-dance solo in the middle of the song.
  • The expression "Puttin' On The Ritz" means to dress fashionably. The saying comes from the upscale Ritz-Carlton hotel company.
  • Born in Jakarta, Indonesia to Dutch parents on July 21, 1955, Taco Ockerse (yes, it's his real name) was raised in Germany, where he studied dance and theater. He made a name for himself on the European supper-club circuit by dressing in formal attire and performing dance versions of American standards. This song was on his first album, and it became an unlikely hit when MTV picked up the video, which showcased Taco's distinctive look and performance that he had perfected in the supper-clubs. MTV didn't have many videos at the time, and this one had lavish costumes, a glowing cane and a tap dance sequence, making it very appealing to the fledgling network. (thanks, Rob - Jemseg, NB)
  • This appeared in the West German stage remake of West Side Story.
  • Taco's entire repertoire was comprised of older songs including some by Jazz bandleader Glen Miller and show tune writer George Gershwin. He played the role of "Chico" in a Marx Brothers stage show in Germany.
  • Taco's follow-up album was also named after an Irving Berlin song he covered, "Let's Face the Music and Dance." He also did Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek."
  • This came out around the same time as a cheesy TV show called Puttin' On The Hits. In the show, contestants would lip-synch for prizes. It could only have happened in the '80s.
  • In the Mel Brooks movie Young Frankenstein, there's a scene where Dr. Frankenstein (played by Gene Wilder) does a song-and-dance act to this with his monster.

  • Arkells love for Hamilton, Ontario is a well-known fact as the band often makes references to the city in their music. Arkells formed in Hamilton in 2006 when they met while attending university and took their name from the street where they held their band practices. Arkells debut album in 2008, Jackson Square, was named after a decaying shopping mall that is located in the heart of downtown Hamilton. On Arkells third album High Noon, they have not forgotten about the place, as they mention it on the third track "Cynical Bastards" when frontman Max Kerman sings, "Jackson Square dropouts avoid the police."
  • Max Kerman explained in our interview that "Cynical Bastards" takes on the people who disparage Hamilton (many times without having lived there), often referring to it as the "Armpit of Ontario." As Kerman points out, the people who live in great industrial cities are not to blame for the circumstances of those cities. "Cynical Bastards" hearkens back to that old saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say it at all."

Kerman adds that the song salutes everyone who is working hard in Hamilton to make it better, "Who are pouring love into the city to make it a great place for me to live, which I'm extremely appreciative."

    Achy Breaky Heart Lyrics

You can tell the world you never was my girl
You can burn my clothes up when I'm gone
You can tell your friends just what a fool I've been
And laugh and joke about me on the phone
You can tell my arms go back to the farm
You can tell my feet to hit the floor
Or you can tell my lips to tell my fingertips
They won't be reaching out for you no more

    But don't tell my heart
    My Achy Breaky Heart
    I just don't think he'd understand
And if you tell my heart
    My achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man

You can tell your mom I moved to Arkansas
You can tell your dog to bite my leg
Or tell your brother Cliff whose fist can tell my lip
He never really liked me anyway

Or tell your Aunt Louise, tell anything you please
Myself already knows I'm not OK.
Or you can tell my eyes to watch out for my mind
It might be walking out on me today

    But don't tell my heart
    My achy breaky heart
    I just don't think he'd understand
And if you tell my heart
    My achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man

    Don't tell my heart
    My achy breaky heart
    I just don't think he'd understand

  • Written by the country songwriter and performer Don Von Tress, this was a remake of a 1991 song by the country act The Marcy Brothers, titled "Don't Tell My Heart." That original version had the lyrics: "Don't tell my heart, my achy, breakin' heart..." (thanks, David - Long Beach, CA)
  • This song best represents the country music craze in the early '90s. As the audience for "Old Country" artists like Willie Nelson and George Strait waned, younger listeners turned to "New Country," which had slick production and pop melodies.

"Achy Breaky Heart" led the charge, crossing over to Top 40 radio and becoming a huge hit. Purists hated it and blamed Cyrus for desecrating country music, but it led the way for artists like Shania Twain and Faith Hill, who had massive pop success with country songs.
  • Born and raised in Flatwoods, Kentucky, Cyrus first worked as a car salesman there, and dreamed of being a professional baseball player. He made his singing debut in father's gospel group.
  • This song became the most popular and prominent of the United States line dancing craze of the early '90s. It spawned a dance called "The Achy Breaky," which became ubiquitous in country dance bars.
  • Thanks to this song, the album Some Gave All went to #1 for 17 weeks - a record for a debut artist. One artist that was held off the top spot by Billy Ray was Megadeth, whose Countdown to Extinction had to settle for #2. The group's rather impolitic leader Dave Mustaine was not pleased; he griped to The Onion A.V. Club: "All those fat f--kin' housewives in the Midwest, and this guy with this funny haircut, and that song, it just resonated with the American people and people bought into it, and there was no shaking it. His song was a novelty."

The song may have been a novelty, but it made the Some Gave All album the best seller of 1992.
  • Cyrus claims he was too bashful to get on the floor at high school dances. He clearly came out of his shell.
  • Cyrus was signed to Mercury Records in 1990 thanks to some help from a friend he'd made, Grand Ole Opry star Del Reeves.
  • Although he never came close to an "Achy" style hit again, Billy Ray Cyrus went on to a solid career with plenty of commercial success. His second album debuted at #3 and went platinum. When his singing career stalled, he turned to acting roles, including a part in the 2001 movie Mulholland Drive.

Billy Ray's daughter, Miley Cyrus, became a Disney Channel star with the show Hannah Montana, playing a girl who is secretly a pop star by night. Billy Ray had a role on the show, playing her manager.

While the show was running, Miley and Billy Ray released a duet called "Ready, Set, Don't Go," which went to #37 US, giving Billy Ray his first Top 40 since "Achy Breaky." Miley would soon become a media sensation and by far the most famous Cyrus.
  • This was the first million-selling country single since "Islands in the Stream" by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton in 1983.
  • Weird Al Yankovic did a spoof of this called "Achy Breaky Song," in which he begs the DJ not to play "that Achy Breaky song." Al offers alternatives like Yoko Ono, Vanilla Ice and Zamfir.
  • In Billy Ray Cyrus' 2006 song "I Want My Mullet Back," the riff to this song is sampled in the guitar solo. (thanks, Vincent - Fayetteville, AR)
  • A rap reworking of the song by Buck 22 titled "Achy Breaky 2" entered the Hot 100 in 2014. Cyrus contributed vocals to this new version as well and also appeared in the video.

  • "Leather Jacket" was the most difficult song for Arkells to write for their third album, High Noon. Lead singer and guitarist, Max Kerman , explained in our interview that the band knew they had something there, but the song was just not clicking. It finally came together in the studio when they made a little pivot in the chorus.
  • "Leather Jacket" was inspired by the song "When No One's Watching" by the lead singer of The Hold Steady, Craig Finn. Max Kerman is a huge fan of the band and thinks that Finn has an incredible way of writing about the nightlife of young people in the city. Kerman wanted a song like that on High Noon, so "Leather Jacket" was his attempt at it.

Explaining the meaning of the tune, he told us: "The idea is that if you have a friend calling you at two in the morning from a payphone, the chances are that s--t isn't going well that day or just in general."

"It's about understanding where people are coming from and just being a supportive person," Kerman added. "I've been in that situation myself, too. I've been there before and I've had friends come bail me out."
  • Max Kerman revealed to the Huffington Post Canada the television show that inspired a couple of the lyrics in the song. "The 'southern accent' lyric is somewhat unrelated: a few years ago I watched Friday Night Lights while we were on tour, and ended up talking like Coach Taylor with fans after the shows. I don't think anyone really noticed," he said.

    Heart and Soul Lyrics

Something in the moonlight catches my eye
The shadow of a lover goes dancing by
Looking for a little bit of love to grow, so
Give me love, give me Heart and Soul
You never let me cross to the other side now
I'm tied to the hope that you will somehow
Hard on the heels of something more
But I lost your love, heart and soul
The tear in my heart as you walk on by

I feel so low and your head is high
Everything you do convinces me more
Please, give me love, give me heart and soul
Looking to the day when I saw your face
I wasn't in the running, I wasn't in the race
You move in a way that I've known before
Now I want your love, heart and soul

    Leaving you ain't easy now
    Loving you's the harder part
You never want me for myself
I've needed you right from the very start
Oh won't you even try to

Give a little bit of heart and soul
Give a little bit of love to grow
Give a little bit of heart and soul
Don't you make me beg for more
Give a sign, I need to know
A little bit of heart and soul

Walking on the water, walking on the air
That was the heart of the love we shared
Do you keep secret left untold
Can't give love, heart or soul
I used to have a lover with a Midas touch
I turned to gold but he turned to dust
Left me for another, I turned to stone
Now I want your love, heart and soul

    Living in a fantasy
There's never any room to breathe
    Hoping every waking hour
You gonna turn around and say that we can start
Oh won't you even try to

Give a little bit of heart and soul
Give a little bit of love to grow
Give a little bit of heart and soul
Don't you make me beg for more
Give a sign, I need to know
A little bit of heart and soul

    Somehow, I lost my way
Looking to see something in your eyes
    But love will never compromise
Now this is the politics of life, yeah

Give a little bit of heart and soul
Give a little bit of love to grow
Give a little bit of heart and soul
Don't you make me beg for more
Give a sign, I need to know
    A little bit, little bit

Give a little bit of heart and soul
Give a little bit of love to grow
Give a little bit of heart and soul
Don't you make me beg for more
Give a sign, I need to know
A little bit of heart now want your soul?

  • This song, written by lead singer Carol Decker and bandmate Ron Rogers, was borne out of a happy accident when Rogers bought a new keyboard with a built-in sequencer but didn't know how to use it. Decker explained in a Kickin' It Old School interview: "He was just trying to get used to the gizmos in it and while messing around with the sequencer he started the 'bum bum buh buh bum bum bum' of the bass riff. T'PauI started to sing a melody over it, the wafty vocal and came up with 'more than an ocean keeps us apart.' The lyrics were about when I went on holiday with my parents and Ronnie couldn't come. I missed him so much, but then I morphed the story into a fictitious one of not being loved back (which I was). The rap was the idea of Andy Piercy, our then producer. He said the gaps needed filling, so I started these syncopated sort of nonsense noises. I then turned those noises into words which took about a week to get right."
  • This was T'Pau's first single. It the UK, it went nowhere when it was first released, but when it was re-released after being used in a commercial for Pepe jeans, it shot up the charts. In America, thanks to a video that was put in rotation on MTV, it went to #4 in August 1987. A month later, the song reached its peak chart position in the UK, also #4.
  • Don't read too much into this song's lyric. Carol Decker says, "'Heart And Soul' isn't about anything - it just goes moon/june/spoon."
  • Carol Decker's voice is layered on this song, with her melody lines ("More than an ocean...") coming in over her rap parts. This presents a challenge in live performances. In our interview with Decker , she told us how she handles it. "I rap the first two verses then cut to the melody for the verse before the chorus," she said. "No one really notices or minds as I cover the essential dynamics of the song. It works well. When I have several backing vocalists we can cover more parts, but the basic version still works."
  • The band was named after a Vulcan high priestess on Star Trek; Carol Decker was watching an episode when the character appeared, and when she suggested the name, the band went for it.
  • This was T'Pau's only hit in the US, putting them in the one-hit wonder category there. Their next single "China In Your Hand," was ignored in the States but ran wild in the UK, where it went to #1 for five weeks. At this point, the band gave up on America, and their second album wasn't even issued there. They continued their success in the UK, placing six more songs in the Top 40.
  • When in the US, Decker says she is often mistaken for Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York. It must be the red hair and British accent.
  • The Bridge of Spies album sold over 4 million copies. In America, it was issued with the title T'Pau.
  • Lead singer Carol Decker was offered but declined the role of Don Johnson's wife on Miami Vice. The role went to Sheena Easton.
  • Decker told Kickin' It Old School she loves this song because, "It's unique still and has a killer chorus plus a universal message. We all want to be loved, don't we?"
  • Despite the single's success in the US, the country was not a great touring locale for the band. Decker lamented in a 1987 interview: "Most of the gigs we played in America were awful. Real toilets. We were there three months and even at the end, the biggest audience we were getting were less than a thousand."

  • The closing track on High Noon was one of the last songs written for the record and ended where the first song, "Fake Money," began. It discusses smart people in power who can make their ideas fit whatever situation that suits them best. The tune explains the need to call those people out when it causes inequality.
  • The song started out as a '70s groove reminiscent of the Rolling Stones song, "Miss You." Arkells frontman, Max Kerman , asked their keyboardist, Anthony Carone, to write a strings arrangement for the tune. Carone came up with something that sounded a lot like "Canned Heat" by Jamiroquai, so "Systematic" ended up being a melding of the '90s soul-pop and the '70s sound of The Rolling Stones.

    Jupiter Crash Lyrics

She follows me down to the sound of the sea
Slips to the sand and stares up at me
"is this how it happens? is this how it feels?
Is this how a star falls?
Is this how a star falls?"

The night turns as I try to explain
    Irresistible attraction and orbital plane
"or maybe it's more like a moth to a flame?"
She brushes my face with her smile
"forget about stars for a while"
    As she melts

Meanwhile millions of miles away in space
The incoming comet brushes Jupiter's face
And disappears away with barely a trace

"was that it? was that the Jupiter show?
Kinda wasn't quite what I'd hoped for, you know"
Pulling away, she stands up slow
And round her the night turns
    Round her the night turns

    Yeah, that was it
    That was the Jupiter Crash
Drawn too close and gone in a flash
Just a few bruises in the region of the splash

She left to the sound of the sea
She just drifted away from me
    So much for gravity

  • This was inspired by the Shoemaker-Levy comet. When the comet was discovered in 1993, it had already brushed Jupiter and was broken into pieces that were caught in the planet's gravity. In July, 1994, the pieces of the comet crashed into Jupiter, providing some impressive images. It was a rare and spectacular event that got a lot of attention from anyone interested in astronomy.
  • In the song, the comet is used as a metaphor for an encounter with a woman. She shows up suddenly, leaves an impact, then disappears.
  • In a 1996 interview with MTV Europe, vocalist and lyricist Robert Smith discussed the meaning of the track as "About the comet crash a couple of years ago. As an analogy for a failed sexual encounter. And how you kind of build people up. Everyone expected the comet kind of hit Jupiter and Jupiter was gonna explode. Unless you have a pretty powerful telescope, you couldn't see anything at all. That sort of sense, there's a big build up and the next day, people were saying 'That was rubbish.' It wasn't rubbish, it was incredible. It wasn't what you expected. That was the analogy."

  • Ace Frehley's fiancee, Rachael Gordon, contributed the lyrics for both this song and "Immortal Pleasures." "I had this rhythm guitar track and I said, 'Honey, I need some lyrics for this,' he told Loudwire . "She's been writing poetry for years, and she came up with these great lyrics. We arranged it… went in the studio and tracked it - a painless process and a lot of fun."
