Never Let Go Lyrics

Look, homicide is illegal, death is a penalty
Never Let Go when you've got ahold of your enemy
Eagle claw cobra clutch by any means necessary
I’ll never let it go, see my shadow ninja mic flow
I throw a great entre dart arrow to your temple
Allmighty [?] to the insidious
Plan of the Wu-Tang Clan became a world brand
We never let it go, we talk a half a mil a show

Never let go of your mind
It’s a terrible thing to waste
To lose, but it’s very hard to find
Being that ignorance is lethal
We must touch hearts, tune souls, harmonize the people
Never let go of your plan, execute
So when you shoot, inspire everyone on the land
Never lose knowledge of yourself
For it may become risk to your health
And great loss of wealth

Never let go of your cream, never let go of your dream
Players retire, but they never let go of the team
If you a rider then you never let go of that thing
Pull up your mans’ like you better let go of that bling
This life’s crazy, too many life sentences, maybe
Fatherless babies on the block but they father 380
That’s just the hood lately, never let go
I’m what the hood made me
Momma told me to find a good lady

Never let go of staring at the death
Like yo, that's your best blow
I still hold on like En Vogue
The cold go to war with the heat
Eyes wide, never falling asleep
All the talking is cheap
Call'em, ultimate warrior, W.W.F
I come up victorious, struggle is nothing to Deck
Set it straight for the seeds, to see a better new
Take the real life by the rings and I ain’t letting go
I ain’t letting go

No matter what the odds be
No matter how hard we
You never let go

Never let go of the fight, never let go of the mic
My honesty, my values, my loyalty, my pride
And memory of those who have passed to the other side
Never letting go, I’m never letting go of my beliefs
My faith, convictions, real
Both hands holding on, never let go the wheel
We hood legends, misunderstood
These lessons, learned
Growing up for manhood
Keep focus on the prize what you better do
A little taste of heaven, sunshine is where we headed to
States what’s ahead of you, always on the schedule
Smoke the gold leaf down to the residue
Letting go, is something that I never do
Those who let go, live life regrettable
Never let go of your hope or your rope
Eyes on the prize, never let go of the scope
When I’m in jail, never let go of the soap
Hold on, boy, never let go

Never let go, the all-eye-seeing, the supreme
Never let go the love of your seeds, or your queen
Never let go your heart, or the place you started
The feeling that I had, Wu-Tang had just charted
The old earth departed, I give thanks to the martyrs
I never let go the love I have for thy father
Never let go the glow
The more I know the more that it shows
I won’t let go, even if I decompose
Your seed will carry it on, we need to carry it on
Pass the baton, life is just the marathon
And ain't' playing to win it, it’s an epidemic
Never let go, that’s what the god recommended

No matter what the odds be
No matter how hard we
You never let go

  • This song starts and ends with Martin Luther King samples taken from the Civil Rights Movement leader's famous 1963 I Have A Dream speech. Wu-Tang's RZA told NME: "The ending quote (about "whirlwinds of revolt" leading to justice for black US citizens) – that's more relevant now than it ever was. Sadly."

    Waiting On A Friend Lyrics

Watching girls go passing by it ain't the latest thing
I'm just standing in a doorway
I'm just trying to make some sense
Out of these girls passing by, the tales they tell of men
I'm not waiting on a lady, I'm just Waiting On A Friend

A smile relieves a heart that grieves, remember what I said
I'm not waiting on a lady, I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend, just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend, I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend

Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, yeah
Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, yeah
Don't need a whore, don't need no booze, don't need a virgin priest
But I need some one I can cry to
    I need someone to protect

Ooh, making love and breaking hearts, it is a game for youth
But I'm not waiting on a lady
I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend, just waiting on a friend
Waiting on a friend, I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend, waiting on a friend

Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, yeah

Waiting On A Friend Song Chart
  • This is a rare mature reflection from The Stones, as Mick Jagger sings about the values of friendship as opposed to women. Then again, it might be about drugs. Keith Richards was a heroin user at the time, and the song could be a euphemism for waiting on the "connection" - the man with the drugs. Should Keith (or in this case, Mick, as he is singing in the video) get questioned by the police, his response would be, "I'm just waiting on a friend." (thanks, Russell - High Desert, CA)
  • Originally Recorded in 1972 at the sessions for their album Goats Head Soup, this didn't make the cut but was repackaged and released on Tattoo You nine years later. Released as a single, it did very well in America thanks to the advent of MTV; the network launched in 1981 and was thrilled to have a new video by a rock band of The Stones' stature.
  • There are no musician credits on Tattoo You, but it is clear that Mick Taylor contributed on guitar, which he was not compensated for. Taylor fell into obscurity after leaving The Stones in 1974.
  • Think this is about waiting for a woman? Think again. Mick Jagger said in 1983: "Just let me be cynical for a moment. First of all, it's really NOT about waiting on a woman friend. It's just about a FRIEND; it doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman. I can see people saying, Oh, we're all much older now, Mick's writing this much more compassionate stuff, must be about a real person. But that's only in their perception of it." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The Stones hired Jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins to play on the Tattoo You album. He played on this as well as the tracks "Slave" and "Neighbors." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The video ran constantly on MTV. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who did their Rock and Roll Circus special in 1968, it featured Jagger and Richards meeting on a New York City street, then going to a local bar to join the rest of The Stones. Reggae legend Peter Tosh is the Rasta sitting on the stoop with Mick Jagger. (thanks, Eli - Albuquerque, NM)
  • This also features Nicky Hopkins on piano, Jimmy Miller on percussion and Kasper Winding on tambourine. Winding was a Danish session drummer who played on the Tattoo You sessions. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Earthquake Driver Lyrics

I was born again a little north of Disney Land
    Somewhere under Wonderland and Hollywood
But then I had to go skipping and diving and bouncing back to New York City
Straight through the heart of America where all the wild things grow

I want to be an Earthquake Driver
I want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

I live alone but I am hungry for affection
I just struggle with connection til the water calls me home
Down into ocean among millions of other lonely people
Drowning among the only people we are ever going to know

I want to be an earthquake driver
I want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

I want to be like the people I see
They run all over just like me
I was saved but what keeps me awake
Is I'm tied into the lightning line
And I wanna see where the sun is shining
All night just a waste of time I, I don't want to see people like me
Just sleeping in, waking in, hoping in, hating in

You look at me like I'm some kind of carnival attraction
You say love's this abstraction, just some ghost that you chase
Well, I am sorry friend, I am a blank space
But the words you remember from whenever you saw my face

I want to be an earthquake driver
I don't want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

I want to be like the people I see
Hey man, they run all over just like me
I want to thank for what keeps me awake
This unplugged ears to the lightning lining
I want to see if the sun is shining
All night, chasing time I, I don't want to be with people like me
Just creeping in, waking in, hoping in, hating in

So what is the point of this famous self absorption?
We turn ourselves into orphans and then spend out nights alone
Living in fear of some kind of imaginary consequence
    Terror incognito, ob-la-di ob-la-da

I want to be an earthquake driver
I don't want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

Truth is I don't want to be no earthquake driver
And I don't want to be an aquarium diver
I just don't want to go home

Oh man, just don't want to go home
No, I do not want to go home

  • Counting Crows vocalist Adam Duritz wrote this track with guitarist David Immerglück. The song finds Duritz asking, "What is the price of this fame and self-absorption?" He told Teamrock.com a lot of the lyrics are him "making fun of things." Duritz explained: "Someone was bitching about the obviousness of it saying 'I live alone but I'm hungry for affection. I struggle with connections' – does he have to relate his travails? That's a joke, you idiot!"

"And we joke about people being self-absorbed, but of course we want them to be that way, because who the f--k else is going to write songs for us, paint paintings, and sacrifice the rest of their lives to examining their own navels, so that everybody else can be entertained,?" he added. "Movies about artists are always about that s--t, bland critiques of them not always being the best people. Who gives a f--k? Lots of people who are far less interesting than Mozart have bad home lives. But nobody ever explores, why would you paint a painting, or write a song?"

  • Along with "Neighbors," this was one of two songs on Tattoo You recorded specifically for the album. The other tracks started as outtakes for other albums.

Tattoo You was the last time The Rolling Stones scored a #1 on the US albums chart, after a full decade of albums that reached the summit.
  • Keith Richards doesn't play on this track; their bass player Bill Wyman played guitar and also synthesizer and bass. Mick Jagger also played guitar on the track, and the only other performer was Charlie Watts on drums.
  • The vocals here peg this song as one of the most psychedelic the Stones ever did. The group had been gradually edging from pure blues to hard rock to psychedelic styles throughout the previous decade. Mick Jagger got quite creative with overdubbing and mixing on parts of the Tattoo You album.
  • The very concept of Heaven, an afterlife for humans presumed virtuous and pleasurable, seems built into the human psyche. It is a component of just about every major religion ever to take root in human history. However, this song seems to be talking only about sexual ecstasy.

    Nobody Wins Lyrics

(No, no, no, no, no, no)
    Nobody Wins
(No, no, no, no, no, no) Bobby!
(No, no, no, no, no, no)

We don't see the same, and we don't speak the same
But if we don't get shit right this go ’round then we ain't gon' beat the game
You can see the pain, we entertain when disagreements turn into blame
The heated words turn into flames under your skin, it just aggravates
Every nerve you got, and every working vein
gotta take a cool breath and respirate
We gon' get it right, no matter how many steps it takes (one, two)
'Cause the devil gon' lie, and Heaven don't hesitate
And Lord knows we need Heaven, ’cause we're going through Hell each and every day
    These emotions bottled up inside
are hot enough to fry thermometers and lighters on my mind
A lot of us will find the answers obvious, but probably all the time
You gotta know the signs and loosen up how tight you hold your pride
Put emotions to the side and get a grip before you lose your mind

Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
When we fight, fuss and argue
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
We say we're leaving but we never do
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
When we fuss, fight and argue
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
We say we're leaving but we never do
    Nobody wins (watch it!)

Stop throwing those pots and pans
    (Nobody wins) Watch it!
We don't have to use our hands
    (No we don't) Watch it!
    Baby, can you understand?
(Baby, can you understand?) Watch it!
    I'm just being a man

Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
When we fight, fuss and argue
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
We say we're leaving but we never do
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
When we fuss, fight and argue
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
We say we're leaving but we never do
    Nobody wins (Watch it!)

    Gossipin', gossipin' and gossipin'
Everybody don't got your back, even if you got a lot of friends
Everybody sins, everybody sins if somebody loses, nobody wins
Sometimes you just need space, sometimes you need oxygen
Negative ain't so bad when it's negative space
If you do anything with nothing, then nothing can get in your way
I always remember when karma comes ’round, ’cause she got a similar face
You gotta know when to hold what you got and know when to give it away

Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
When we fight, fuss and argue
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
We say we're leaving but we never do
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
When we fuss, fight and argue
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
We say we're leaving but we never do
    Nobody wins (watch it!)

    Let's talk about this
(Let's just talk about this) Watch it!
    I'm glad that you missed
    (Nobody wins) Watch it!
You almost tore up my face
(You almost tore up my face) Watch it!
We can't afford to buy another place

Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
When we fight, fuss and argue
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
We say we're leaving but we never do
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
When we fuss, fight and argue
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)
We say we're leaving but we never do
    Nobody wins (watch it!)

    Nobody wins (watch it!)
(I don't care what you do)
    Nobody wins (watch it!)
    Might as well stay home
    Nobody wins (watch it!)
    Stay home, stay home, yeah
    Nobody wins (no, no)
    Nobody wins (no, no)
Nobody wins (no no no no no no)

  • The first new music to be heard from Jodeci since their breakup in 1996 is a jam about domestic abuse. "We aren't immune to issues that are important in our community," said Jodeci's K-Ci . "Domestic violence has always been an issue in relationships, but lately it's been brought to the front of our community consciousness."
  • A snippet of the song was first heard on November 7, 2014, when Jodeci performed a medley of their tunes at the Soul Train Awards.
  • The song features guest vocals by B.o.B. "It is a really jammin' song," the rapper told Rap-Up.com . "It's a really refreshing sound. It kinda reminds me of like neo-soul meets Goodie Mob meets modern day music."

    Ironic Lyrics

    An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it Ironic, don't you think

    [Chorus]
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
    Who would've thought, it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
    "Well, isn't this nice."
    And isn't it ironic,l don't you think

    [Chorus]

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
    In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic, don't you think
A little too ironic, and yeah I really do think

    [Chorus]

Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
And life has a funny way of helping you out
    Helping you out.

  • The events described in the song (rain on your wedding day, a traffic jam when you're already late, etc.), are not examples of irony. Irony is the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning. The one actual, ironic statement in this song is, "As the plane crashed down he thought 'well, isn't this nice'..." Sarcasm is an example of irony, and this thought, clearly, was a sarcastic one. (thanks, Margaret - Buellton, CA [Margaret is an English teacher])

The London Times June 14, 2008 asked Morissette if she has worked out the meaning of irony yet. She replied: "Yes, I've now learnt the definition of irony - but the dictionary now says that it's a coincidence and bad luck, too - not that I don't deserve a little slap on the wrist for my malapropism. I always tell people that I'm the smartest stupid person you'll ever meet."
  • At the end of the song, Alanis says life has a funny funny way of helping us out - in spite of all of the bad stuff that we have to go through. The bad stuff helps us get to where we are going, and that is ironic. (thanks, Nicole - Houston, TX)
  • This was Morissette's third single and first Top-10 hit. Her first single, "You Oughta Know," is probably her best known, but no one had heard of her when it was released and it only hit US #13.
  • Glen Ballard produced this and wrote it with Alanis. He has also worked with Dave Matthews and has a history of radio-friendly production. Morissette moved from Canada to Los Angeles to write and record with him.
  • This is one of 5 hits on the album, which has sold over 16 million copies. The others are "You Oughta Know," "Hand In My Pocket," "Head Over Feet" and "You Learn."
  • This was nominated for Grammys in the categories Record of the Year and Best Short Form Music Video.
  • In 1996, this won MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video, Best Editing, and Best New Artist In A Video.
  • This was the first album Morissette released in America, but as a teenager, she released 2 dance albums in Canada. Her stage name at the time was simply "Alanis."

    Pull Out the Pin Lyrics

Just as we hit the green,
I've never been so happy to be alive.
    Only seven miles behind
    You could smell the child,
The smell of the front line's survival.

    With my silver Buddha
    And my silver bullet,
    (I pull the pin.)

You learn to ride the Earth,
When you're living on your belly and the enemy are city-births.
Who need radar? We use scent.
They stink of the west, stink of sweat.
Stink of cologne and baccy, and all their Yankee hash.

    With my silver Buddha
    And my silver bullet,
    (I'm pulling on the pin,)
Ooh, I pull out, Pull Out the Pin.
    (pulling on the pin, oh)

    [Chorus]
    Just one thing in it
    Me or him.
    Just one thing in it
    Me or him.
    And I love life!
    Just one thing in it
    Me or him.
    And I love life!
    I love life!
    I love life!

I've seen the coat for me.
I'll track him 'til he drops,
Then I'll pop him one he won't see.
He's big and pink, and not like me.
    He sees no light.
He sees no reason for the fighting

    With my silver Buddha
    And my silver bullet.
    (I'm pulling on the pin,)
Ooh, I pull out, pull out the pin.
    (pulling on the pin, oh)

I had not seen his face,
    'til I'm only feet away
    Unbeknown to my prey.
    I look in American eyes.
    I see little life,
    See little wife.
He's striking violence up in me.

    With my silver Buddha
    And my silver bullet.

  • This track was inspired by a TV documentary Bush saw about the Vietnam war, which viewed the conflict from a Viet Cong perspective. She recalled to Keyboard (July 1985): "There was this fantastic TV documentary about a cameraman who was on the front lines. He was a brilliant cameraman and he was so well-trained a technician that he kept filming things no matter how he was feeling about it at the time. Some of the stuff he was shooting was really disturbing. Some of these Vietnamese guys would just come in and they were sort of dying in mid-air. And he'd just keep on filming."
  • Bush's viewing of the documentary stimulated an act of sonic visualization in the studio. "We sat in front of the speakers trying to focus on the picture - a green forest, humid and pulsating with life," she recalled. "We are looking at the Americans from the Vietnamese point of view and almost like a camera we start in wide shot."

"Right in the distance you can see the trees moving, smoke and sounds drifting our way,... sounds like a radio," Bush continued. "Closer in with the camera and you can catch glimpses of their pink skin. We can smell them for miles with their sickly cologne, American tobacco and their stale sweat."
  • The song features backing vocals from Bush's mentor, Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour.

    We used to ride, baby
    Ride around in limousines
    We looked so fine, baby
You in white and me in green
    Drinking and dancing
    All inside and crazy dream
Well now look at your face now baby
Look at you and look at me

    I get so scared
Just to see you on the street
    They're living dead
Your all the same, you never speak
    Your wrecked out now
Washed up high up on the beach
Well now look at your face now baby
Look at you and look at me

We used to shine, shine, shine, shine
Say what a pair, say what a team
We used to ride, ride, ride, ride
    In a long Black Limousine
    Those dreams are gone baby

  • Ron Wood got a writing credit for this. It is one of the few Stones originals not credited only to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
  • According to Wood, the guitar riff was influenced by a Texas slide Blues guitarist named Hop Wilson, who recorded in the '60s. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Feel Right Lyrics

Calling all cars in here for the Prince of the South
Fuck that yabba-dabba-doo shit, bitch, I just got out
Still rapping, slapping kittens and grabbing my crotch
    I'm the artist, the godfather
    Still hard as a rock
You gon fuck around and make me knock your fruit juice loose
Banana, your watermelon and pomegranate too
    Rhyming kung-fu that split bamboo
Crowd rockin', ain't no stopping that rapping ass fool
I been bad, bro, 'cha getting mad for?
I'm gon' have to fuck you up
    I eat flames up
    Shit fire out
Don't make me light my butt
    Excuse me, who me?
I got a lot of groupies
Oughta have a fucking doghouse like Snoopy
    Curtains go up
    It's going down
Tear the thing out the frame
    With my band

    Come on, come on

    Feel Right in this motherfucker
    (Right)
    Feel good in this motherfucker
    (Right)
My whole hood in this motherfucker
    (Right)
And we gon' rock this motherfucker
    (All night)

    Feel right in this motherfucker
    (Right)
    Feel good in this motherfucker
    (Right)
My whole hood in this motherfucker
    (Right)
And we gon' rock this motherfucker
    (All night)

And we gon' rock this motherfucker
    (All night)

And we gon' rock this motherfucker
    (All night)

Grabbing on my pants, she trying to pull it out my pocket
Don't yank on the motherfucker so hard, you're gonna pull it out the socket
It's exercise with thighs and hip muscles
Next exercise, we gon' burn some lip muscles
Let the music work your ear muscles
And if you're skinny then use your little muscles
Bag back or tea bag with these duffles
Pow pow get smash when we hustle
When the last time you have a knuckle sandwich, huh?
The last time a nigga had a foot so far up your ass you couldn't handle it?
    You can't stand it
To make matters worse you gotta go to the studio with Bruno Mars on another planet
Don't get mad, I'm just saying
Don't believe it cause I'm saying it, bitch
Believe it cause I'm telling you
I'm doing the rapping and bussing
Ronson on the scratchin' and cuttin'

    Come on, come on

    Feel right in this motherfucker
    (Right)
    Feel good in this motherfucker
    (Right)
My whole hood in this motherfucker
    (Right)
And we gon' rock this motherfucker
    (All night)

    Feel right in this motherfucker
    (Right)
    Feel good in this motherfucker
    (Right)
My whole hood in this motherfucker
    (Right)
And we gon' rock this motherfucker
    (All night)

And we gon' rock this motherfucker
    (All night)

And we gon' rock this motherfucker
    (All night)

    This the intermission
I'll break it down so you niggas listen
Take a second to wipe my sweat
Might be the only chance you get to catch your breath
Don't get too comfortable in here
Niggas know I'm bringing back the rumble in here
Just when you thought you could cool down and sip some of that water
    Shit
    A nigga back
    Say it again

    Feel right in this motherfucker
    (Right)
    Feel good in this motherfucker
    (Right)
My whole hood in this motherfucker
    (Right)
And we gon' rock this motherfucker
    (All night)

    Feel right in this motherfucker

My whole hood in this motherfucker
    (Right)
And we gon' rock this motherfucker

  • Mark Ronson recorded much of Uptown Special at Memphis' Royal Studios. Established in 1956, it is one of the oldest continuously operated music recording studios in the world. In its time, it has hosted such legendary acts as Chuck Berry, Ike & Tina Turner and Al Green. A chance encounter with Mystikal at the studio led to the New Orleans rapper throwing down some unhinged rhymes for this tune.
  • The song made its live debut when Mystikal performed the tune during the November 22, 2014 episode of Saturday Night Live. Mystikal was not the musical guest for that episode - Ronson and Bruno Mars were. Mars, however, was willing to join the backup crew and let the rapper take center stage for the performance while Ronson joined on guitar.
  • Among the instruments featured on Uptown Special is the drum kit used on Al Green's 1972 album Let's Stay Together.
  • Mark Ronson told the story of the song to The Guardian. "In 2012, Mystikal put out a song called 'Hit Me' that a lot of my DJ friends went crazy for," he said. "It kind of went under the radar but I loved it."

When Ronson was in New Orleans with co-producer Jeff Bhasker, the jazz musician Trombone Shorty told him he should look up Mystikal when he got to Baton Rouge. "We got there and kicked it with Mystikal and [legendary New Orleans rap producer] KLC for a bit," said Ronson. "When we got to Memphis a few weeks later, Mystikal came up and we cut this song. The backing track was something that me and the band had recorded on a whim a few weeks back but it worked out to be so well suited to his vocal style."
  • The song's music video was co-directed by Bruno Mars with Cameron Thomas Duddy, who has shot many of the Hawaiian-born singer's visuals. The clip shows a young boy entering the Sunnydale High talent competition, who is introduced to a bored audience by original Brady Bunch star Florence Henderson. The youngster's energetic rendition of this song earns him 10 points from the contest's judges, Bruno Mars, Mystikal and Mark Ronson.

Sunnydale High is the fictional high school portrayed in Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

  • Originally recorded at the Black And Blue sessions in 1974, this song went on for a while and was called "The Black And Blue Jam" before being reworked for Tattoo You.
  • Jazz great Sonny Rollins was brought in to play sax.
  • Pete Townshend from The Who sang backup. Some connections between Townshend and The Stones:

Townshend claims he stole his legendary windmill arm swing from Keith Richards.

The Who played at The Stones Rock And Roll Circus concert event in 1968. The film wasn't released until 1996.

In 1976, Townshend contributed to Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane's Mahoney's Last Stand project.

In 1982, following the end of the Stones' European tour, Mick Jagger accompanied The Who for parts of their farewell tour. The following year, on Mick's 40th birthday, Townshend wrote an unflattering letter in the London Times commenting on the significance of this event.

Townshend played on Mick Jaggers first solo album in 1984.

In February 1986, Townshend was one of those present when the Stones gave their London club performance in honor of Ian Stewart, joining the band onstage for some Blues numbers.

In January 1989, he inducted The Stones into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2001, he played on the songs "Gun" and "Joy" for Jagger's Goddess In The Doorway album. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The original version recorded in 1974 featured Billy Preston on organ, Jeff Beck on guitar, and Nicky Hopkins on piano. Their parts were erased when it was reworked.
  • The CD version of Tattoo You contains an extra 90 seconds.

  • This Christmas single was inspired by the life and passing of Schultz's father-in-law. Said the singer-songwriter, "We tried to write the lyrics that would reflect the honesty of the emotions we were feeling - that Christmas was still hard, even though we have faith that Kate's dad is with Jesus."

"We had no idea how many lives this song would touch, but it only makes sense because there are very few people that haven't experienced a loss that makes life a lot different. There are few times in the year when that difference is felt more powerfully than around the holidays."

    Start Me Up Lyrics

    If you Start Me Up
If you start me up I'll never stop

    You can start me up
You can start me up I'll never stop
    I've been running hot
You got me just about to blow my top
You can start me up, you can start me up,
I'll never stop, never stop, never stop, never stop

You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry
Spread out the oil, the gasoline
I walk smooth ride in a mean, mean machine
    Start it up

    You can start me up
Kick on the starter, give it all you've got
    (You got, you got)
    I can't compete
With the riders in the other heats
    If you rough it up
If you like it you can slide it up, slide it up
Slide it up, slide it up
Don't make a grown man cry
Don't make a grown man cry
Don't make a grown man cry
My eyes dilate, my lips go green
My hands are greasy, she's a mean, mean machine
    Start it up

    Start me up
Ah, you've got to, you've got to
    Never, never, never stop
    Start it up
Ah, start it up, never, never, never
You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry
Ride like the wind, at double speed
I'll take you places that you've never, never seen

    You start it up
Love the day when we will never stop
Never stop, never, never, never stop
    Tough me up
    Never stop, never stop
You, you, you make a grown man cry
You, you make a dead man come,

    Start Me Up Song Chart
  • The Stones first recorded this at the Some Girls sessions in 1977. After the first 2 takes, they recorded it with a Reggae beat a bunch of times, but didn't like the result. They put it away until 4 years later, when they needed a song for Tattoo You. They went back to the second take and reworked it for the album.
  • Keith Richards: "The story here is the miracle that we ever found that track. I was convinced - and I think Mick was - that it was definitely a Reggae song. And we did it in 38 takes - 'Start me up. Yeah, man, cool. You know, you know, Jah Rastafari.' And it didn't make it. And somewhere in the middle of a break, just to break the tension, Charlie and I hit the rock and roll version. And right after that we went straight back to Reggae. And we forgot totally about this one little burst in the middle, until about five years later when somebody sifted all the way through these Reggae takes. After doing about 70 takes of 'Start Me Up' he found that one in the middle. It was just buried in there. Suddenly I had it. Nobody remembered cutting it. But we leapt on it again. We did a few overdubs on it, and it was like a gift, you know? One of the great luxuries of The Stones is we have an enormous, great big can of stuff. I mean what anybody hears is just the tip of an iceberg, you know. And down there is vaults of stuff. But you have to have the patience and the time to actually sift through it." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Microsoft paid $10 million to use this for their Windows '95 advertising campaign. Although it became common practice in years to come, this was one of the first times a hit song was used in a major marketing campaign.
  • The Stones first recorded this in Paris the same day in 1977 that they recorded "Miss You."
  • As he did with "Honky Tonk Women" and some other Stones songs, Keith Richards played this in open G tuning. The guitar tablature contains notation for just the top 5 strings. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • This became a staple at sporting events. It is usually played before some kind of action or the start of a game.
  • The Stones used this to open their 1989 Steel Wheels tour.
  • Ford used this in ads that started just after midnight on January 1, 2003. It was part of a campaign to reintroduce their cars to the American public, with commercials airing on sporting events as well as an episode of The Simpsons where Keith Richards and Mick Jagger were guest stars. This was the first time a Stones song was used in a car commercial.
  • The Stones played this at halftime of the 2006 Super Bowl in Detroit. Two years earlier, Janet Jackson had her famous "Wardrobe Malfunction" during her performance, so the NFL wasn't taking any chances - they cut the volume on the line "You make a dead man come."
  • Producer Chris Kimsey recalled in the book Classic Tracks: The Real Stories Behind 68 Seminal Recordings by Richard Buskin: "After they cut it, I said, 'That's bloody great! Come and listen'. However, when I played it back Keith said, 'Nah, it sounds like something I've heard on the radio. Wipe it.' Of course, I didn't, but he really did not like it and I'm not sure whether he likes it to this day. I don't think it's one of his favourite songs, although it's obviously everyone's favourite guitar riff; his guitar riff. Maybe because Keith loves reggae so much, he wanted it to be a reggae song, but that wasn't to be."

"Including run-throughs, 'Start Me Up' took about six hours to record," Kimsey added. "You see, if they all played the right chords at the right time, went to the chorus at the right time and got to the middle eight together, that was a master. It was like, 'Oh, wow!' Don't forget, they would never sit down and work out a song – they would jam it and the song would evolve out of that. That's their magic."
