This song began with the title "The Real Thing" during the Rattle And Hum sessions. It's a play on the Coca-Cola slogan "It's The Real Thing," and the song was intended to make a statement about commercialism.

U2 performed this on the Zoo TV tour with huge monitors flashing messages and video clips behind the band. It was mocking the advertising messages that were constantly bombarding the public.

A single of dance remixes went to #8 in England and was popular in clubs.

Richard Branson asked to use this to launch his Virgin Cola, a competitor of Coke, but U2 refused.

Back when they gave out such an award, this won the MTV Video Music Award for best special effects in 1992.

Meltdown Song Chart

This is the opening track of the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. The song is manned by Stromae. The Belgian singer-songwriter and producer first came to wide public attention with his song "Alors On Danse," which was one of the biggest hits of 2010 in continental Europe.

The song also features Lorde, the album's overall curator, holding down the hook. She's joined by Pusha T and Q-Tip, both of whom toss out quick-fire verses after the initial chorus. The Haim sisters also have a brief cameo at the end of the track.

Lorde told Fader: "Something like 'Meltdown' was pretty far outside my comfort zone. I contacted Stromae early on asking if he had anything, and he had this amazing instrumental from his record. I was, like, 'Oh my god, when I listened to your album the first thing I thought was that someone should do something over this awesome instrumental.' I thought, 'Wouldn't it be cool to get a bunch of rappers on it?' And once you say that, nothing can dissuade you. It ended up being one of my favorites on the album."

Asked by Fader if all the artists joined her in the studio, Lorde replied: "I wish. It was me and Haim. I'd been in the studio for 20 hours doing everything that needed to be finished, with me and my producer scarfing burgers."

"It was this big Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, and Haim couldn't eat all day," she continued. "Before they came to the studio, we were like, 'Put everything away! Light a candle! No one can know this happened' When the girls showed up, we did awesome gang vocals for an hour. You feel so much cooler around them than you are. When they leave, I'm like, 'The light just got turned off and all of a sudden I'm a loser again.'"

Speaking about her curating of the soundtrack to Rolling Stone, Lorde said "Everyone my age read the books and saw the films. I got a call: 'You've been asked to write the end-credit song.' But I wanted ownership in the process. They came back: 'Would you like to do the soundtrack?' I was like, 'Uh, that would work.'"

Bono wrote the lyrics about his wife Ali. The quiet verses are him telling her the words, the loud guitar pieces at the end of the verses is her reaction. At the end when he screams "All I want is you" 4 times, the Edge solos for that amount of time, as her reaction. (thanks, Bill - Johnstown, PA)

The Edge came up with the guitar part while working on U2's song "Desire."

Van Dyke Parks arranged the strings. He was best known for working with Brian Wilson on the Beach Boys Smile project, writing intricate lyrics for Wilson's melodies, but many other artists have called upon his services as a session musician and arranger, including T-Bone Burnett, Rufus Wainwright and Joanna Newsom. When we spoke with Parks in 2011, he talked about "framing" a song to give it "greater power of enunciation so that it will be noticed." "All I Want Is You" is a great example of his work, as the strings bring out an emotive quality in the song without detracting from its other elements.

On The Best Of 1980-1990, "October" comes on as a hidden track about a minute after this.

The single is backed with a cover of "Unchained Melody."

This track was manned by the British production duo, The Chemical Brothers. Most of the vocals are provided by R&B singer, Miguel, who surprisingly raps rather than croons the words. Lorde, the album's overall curator, also contributes to the chorus and sings the outro.

Asked by Fader whose idea it was for Miguel to rap on the track, Lorde replied: "There was this very early beat that the Chemical Brothers sent me. They sent me ten beats, and that was the one I kept coming back to."

"It had no melody, and I was trying to dream up this amazingly melodic person on this amazingly melody-less beat, and I thought of Miguel," she continued. "I said, 'Are you a fan of Chemical Brothers by any chance?' He was, and he was able to deliver in that style. I hadn't heard Miguel in that way, and I haven't heard Chemical Brothers in that way, so it was pretty cool for me."

"Someone called it 'playing god' earlier, which is a weird way of thinking about it, but it really felt limitless to me to sit in my bedroom on the tour bus and think up dream combinations of people who deserved to be in each other's presence," Lorde added, "people who I thought could learn from each other."

The track features James Blake on the guitar. Elba hooked up with the electronic music singer-songwriter after running into him at a Brixton, London café. The actor told Spin magazine: "I was directing a video for an artist D'Banj, he's a Nigerian rapper. I was in Brixton shooting that, having lunch at this place, and this kid came up and sat next to me and he goes, 'Idris, I'm James.' And I'm, 'Hello, man. I didn't recognize you, you're James Blake.' We know mutual friends."

"We sat there talking, and I told him what I was doing and he goes, 'Oh man, I'd love to hear it.' So I sent him a couple of jams when I was mixing songs," Elba continued. "He came down to studio to mess around with one of these tracks and the one he ended up on he came into the studio and plugged in the Rhodes and started playing. He didn't want to sing, he just wanted to get on it."

Bob Dylan helped Bono write this. As he wrote it, Bono thought it may have been a Bob Dylan song he had heard. He asked Dylan, who told him it wasn't and helped him finish it.

Bono started writing this while staying with The Edge at his place in Los Angeles. After The Edge moved out, the Menendez family moved in. Eric and Lyle Menendez killed their parents there in 1989 and were sentenced to life.

Bob Dylan recorded a vocal track, but it was not used because of contractual obligations to The Traveling Wilburys, a group Dylan was playing in with George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne.

The album celebrates South African music and also pays homage to the actor's late father, Winston Elba, as well as Nelson Mandela. "South Africa has numerous different tribes and each one has a musical expression, and each one has a very unique, different sound style," said Elba. "At the time I had my studio at the apartment I was staying in while I was making Mandela - a little keyboard, a laptop - and as an experiment to myself, I vowed to keep making music."

The song is a half-sung account of Elba recording a video message for the real Mandela during the filming of his biopic - only for the South African leader to have no idea who he was when he watched the clip.

Bono wrote this after going on a relief mission in Ethiopia. It's an anti-apartheid song, but the lyrics make a broad political statement about how money seems to be more important than personal freedoms in the eyes of many world leaders.

Bono was part of Little Steven Van Zandt's 1985 Artists United Against Apartheid collaboration, which brought attention to the racist policy in South Africa and to the plight of Nelson Mandela. Over the years, Bono has been part of many causes as he uses his celebrity status to gain access to political leaders and raise money for relief organizations.

This was first released as an acoustic song on the compilation Artists United Against Apartheid, with Keith Richards and Ron Wood from the Rolling Stones sitting in with Bono. Little Steven put Artists Against Apartheid together with the intention of releasing just one song - "Sun City." Some of the artists offered other songs, so they were able to release a full album.

Bono got the lyric "I have seen the comings and goings, the captains and the kings," from Irish poet Brendan Behan. The line, "I am someone" came from a quote by US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson.

Before The Edge's guitar solo, Bono says: "OK Edge, play The Blues."

This appeared on the 7" single that also included "Where The Streets Have No Name" and "Sweetest Thing."

Johnny Marr wrote this about the great women that have made the impression on him throughout his life. He explained to Under The Radar magazine: "Women seem to have a need and an understanding of what their sense of purpose is doing for them that guys don't. I'm being very presumptuous here, but what I've learned from a couple of women is the idea of: Does this relationship with a child, with a husband, with a lover, with a girlfriend, with what I'm doing, work for my sense of purpose?
