Runaway Lyrics

On the street where you live girls talk about their social lives
They're made of lipstick, plastic and paint
A touch of sable in their eyes

All your life all you asked
When is your Daddy gonna talk to you
But we're living in another world
Tryin' to get your message through

No one heard a single word you said
They should have seen it in your eyes
What was going around your head

[Chorus:]
Oh, she's a little Runaway
Daddy's girl learned fast
All those things he couldn't say
Ooh, she's a little runaway

A different line every night
Guaranteed to blow your mind
See you out on the streets
Call me for a wild time
So you sit home alone
'Cause there's nothing left that you can do
There's only pictures hung in the shadows
Left there to look at you

You know she likes the lights
At night on the neon Broadway signs
And she don't really mind
Its only love she hoped to find

[Chorus]

No one heard a single word you said
They should have seen it in your eyes
What was going on your head

[Chorus]

Runaway Song Chart
  • This was the first hit for Bon Jovi. Jon Bon Jovi wrote it in 1982 with early collaborator George Karak, and it was popular in the band's home state of New Jersey. Despite the success of this song, the band continued to struggle. They were a popular live act, but didn't make much money until they released Slippery When Wet two years later.
  • Jon Bon Jovi recorded this with studio musicians because he didn't have a band yet. The song broke nationally and Jon put the band together soon after.
  • This gained popularity when it was included on a compilation album of unsigned acts released by New Jersey radio station WDHA. Long Island radio station WAPP also put it on an annual CD of local bands.
  • Dave "the snake" Sabo played guitar on this. He went on to be the lead guitarist for the band Skid Row.
  • In a 1986 interview with Spin magazine, Jon Bon Jovi had some harsh words for this video. He said: "I hate videos. If you wanted to torture me you'd tie me down and force me to watch our first five videos. Five times you're chump before you learn what you're doing. The first time we'd just made a record and we were all excited and some a--hole decides we're going to make a video for 'Runaway.' So instead of making it about what the song's about, he decides to put a concept to it with his little niece in it. It's the worst piece of s--t I ever saw in my life. There's a girl with like fire coming out of her eyes. They dressed the band. Richie's wearing a jumpsuit and shoes that are three sizes too big. They kept squirting us down with this greasy solution to make it look like we were sweating. We all look like assholes."
  • A live version was used as the B-side of "Lay Your Hands On Me" in 1989.
  • Before performing this in 2003, Jon Bon Jovi introduced it by saying, "If you see this song down at the beach, buy it a drink - it's finally old enough."
  • Session musician Hugh McDonald played bass on this song. He played on Bon Jovi's early albums and replaced Alec John Such as Bon Jovi's bass player in 1994, although he is not considered an official member of the band. (thanks, Lee-Ann - Perth, Australia)

    You Are In Love Lyrics

    One look, dark room
    Meant just for you
    Time moved too fast
    You play it back
    Buttons on a coat
    Lighthearted joke
    No proof, not much
    But you saw enough
    Small talk, he drives
    Coffee at midnight
    The light reflects
    The chain on your neck
    He says look up
    And your shoulders brush
    No proof, one touch
    You felt enough

You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You Are In Love, true love
    You are in love

    Morning, his place
    Burn toast, Sunday
    You keep his shirt
    He keeps his word
And for once you let go
Of your fears and your ghosts
    One step, not much
    But it said enough
    You kiss on sidewalks
    You fight and you talk
    One night he wakes
    Strange look on his face
    Pauses, then says
    You're my best friend
And you knew what it was
    He is in love

You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love

    And so it goes
You two are dancing in a snow globe round and round
And he keeps the picture of you in his office downtown
And you understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars
And why I've spent my whole life trying to put it into words

'Cause you can hear it in the silence
You can feel it on the way home
You can see it with the lights out
You are in love, true love
    You're in love

You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love
    You're in love

You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love

  • Taylor wrote this song with Jack Antonoff using the relationship that the fun. guitarist and his girlfriend Lena Dunham have as her inspiration. "You guys are like the benchmark of actual, real true love," she commented to him during a MTV interview.
  • Lena Dunham dubbed this her "someday wedding song." Apparently the Girls creator didn't know the tune was inspired by her when she said that.
  • Asked by Elle magazine about the song's lyric "You're my best friend," Swift replied: "I've never had that, so I wrote that song about things that Lena [Dunham] has told me about her and Jack [Antonoff]. That's just basically stuff she's told me. And I think that that kind of relationship - God, it sounds like it would just be so beautiful - would also be hard. It would also be mundane at times."

    Less Than Zero Lyrics

Calling Mr. Oswald with the swastika tattoo
There is a vacancy waiting in the English voodoo
Carving "V" for "vandal" on the guilty boy's head
When he's had enough of that, maybe you'll take him to bed
To teach him he's alive before he wishes he was dead

    [Chorus:]
Turn up the TV, no one listening will suspect
Even your mother won't detect it, so your father won't know
They think that I've got no respect but
    Everything is Less Than Zero
    Hey, oo hey-ey
    Hey, oo hey-ey

Oswald and his sister are doing it again
They've got the finest home movies that you have ever seen
They've got a thousand variations, every service with a smile
They're gonna take a little break and they'll be back after a while
Well, I hear that South America is coming into style

    [Chorus:]

A pistol was still smoking, a man lay on the floor
Mr. Oswald said he had an understanding with the law
He said he heard about a couple living in the USA
He said they traded in their baby for a Chevrolet
Let's talk about the future, now we've put the past away

    [Chorus:]
    Hey, oo hey-ey
    Hey, oo hey-ey...

  • This is a scathing attack on Oswald Mosley, a politician who was popular in England at the time. Mosley, who died in 1980, was the leader of the British Union of Fascists.
  • This was Costello's first single - it was only issued in Europe. At the time, he had a day job working on a computer at Elizabeth Arden cosmetics.
  • According to Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock and Soul, The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever , the song is about a young couple making out in one of their parents' houses, while 1930s British fascist leader Oswald Moseley and his sister babble poison on TV, angling for a comeback in the era of the National Front.
  • American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis named his first novel, the nihilistic, drug-fuelled Less Than Zero after this song. He told the NME August 7, 2010: "Why did I name my first book after an Elvis Costello song? Who knows? I was working on this project starting when I was 16 and it was the Less Than Zero project. I was like most white, upper-class educated boys: I was obsessed with Elvis Costello. That was his main audience in the US. That title seemed very evocative to me. It had various other titles, but Less Than Zero ultimately seemed like the best title for the book, even though I had this much older professor who really loved the book but tried to dissuade me from using that title because he thought it was lame. He suggested Winter Vacation. Elvis Costello became the man for me for very many years. And then he didn't. Which happens, it happens to a lot of people, it's just the nature of things. Very few people sustain massive careers for a long time."
  • When he recorded the My Aim Is True album, Costello had not yet formed his backing band The Attractions, so he used members of an American group called Clover as his musicians:

    John McFee - guitar
    Sean Hopper - keyboards
    Johnny Ciambotti - bass
    Mickey Shine - drums
    Stan Shaw - organ

Clover disbanded in 1978; McFee joined The Doobie Brothers and Hopper formed Huey Lewis and the News.
  • When Costello appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1977 (filling in for the Sex Pistols, who were denied entry into the US), it was decided that he would perform this song. Elvis, however, had other ideas. After playing some of "Less Than Zero," he halted the performance and played the unreleased "Radio Radio" instead, earning him a ban from the show that lasted until 1989, when he returned as musical guest.

Costello had no interest in playing "Less Than Zero" for an American audience (especially on a late-night comedy show), since its subject matter was decidedly English.
  • Like "Watching The Detectives," this song has reggae overtones. Costello was influenced by the first Clash album, which used a lot of reggae sounds.

Put a chain around my neck, and lead me anywhere

I don't want to be your tiger

Baby let me be, around you every night

  • This was written by Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe for Elvis Presley's second feature film, Loving You. The song, backed with the film's title track, would top the pop charts the day before the movie's release, where it stayed for seven weeks. The songwriters took advantage of Elvis's accidental reputation as a teddy-bear lover after a false rumor of his penchant for the stuffed animals spread to his fans, who promptly flooded him with hordes of cuddly pals. The day after Christmas, he donated the collection of thousands to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
  • This song showed a side of The King that was more sweet than sexy, perhaps a bid to tone down his swivel-hipped invitation to sin that scandalized the censors of the time.
  • The sitcom Full House occasionally featured this as a lullaby for the character Michelle, performed by Elvis fanatic Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) with Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) and Joey Gladstone (Dave Coulier). The guys later reunited as their characters on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and sang the song to comfort the host about his departure from the talk show.
  • Aside from dominating the pop charts, this also topped the R&B Best Sellers List and the country charts.
  • Country singer Tanya Tucker covered this for her Elvis tribute album It's Now or Never in 1994. ZZ Top also included it on their 30th anniversary album, XXX, in 1999.
  • This was featured in the 1989 Jerry Lee Lewis biopic Great Balls of Fire!, starring Dennis Quaid in the title role, with Michael St. Gerard as Elvis. It was also used in the 1998 fantasy Pleasantville, starring Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon.

    Get your motor runnin'
    Head out on the highway
    Lookin' for adventure
    And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space

    I like smoke and lightning
    Heavy metal thunder
    Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space

    Like a true nature's child
We were born, Born To Be Wild

    • With the line "Heavy Metal Thunder," this became the first popular song to use the phrase "Heavy Metal," which became a term for hard rock. William Burroughs is credited with coining the phrase, as he used it in his 1961 novel The Soft Machine, describing his character Uranian Willy as "the Heavy Metal Kid." Burroughs told The Paris Review: "I felt that heavy metal was sort of the ultimate expression of addiction, that there's something actually metallic in addiction, that the final stage reached is not so much vegetable as mineral."
    • This was used in the 1969 movie Easy Rider, a counterculture classic starring Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda as bikers who ride from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Another Steppenwolf song, "The Pusher," was also used in the film.
When the movie was in production, this was simply a placeholder, since Fonda wanted Crosby, Stills and Nash to do the soundtrack. It became clear that the song belonged in the movie, and it stayed. Partly because of it's use in Easy Rider, this has become the song most associated with motorcycles.
    • This was written by Mars Bonfire, which is the stage name of Dennis Edmonton. He wasn't a member of Steppenwolf, but his brother Jerry was the band's drummer. Bonfire wrote a few other songs for Steppenwolf as well, including "Ride With Me" and "Tenderness."
Explaining how he came up with the song, Bonfire said: "I was walking down Hollywood Boulevard one day and saw a poster in a window saying 'Born to Ride' with a picture of a motorcycle erupting out of the earth like a volcano with all this fire around it. Around this time I had just purchased my first car, a little secondhand Ford Falcon. So all this came together lyrically: the idea of the motorcycle coming out along with the freedom and joy I felt in having my first car and being able to drive myself around whenever I wanted. 'Born To Be Wild' didn't stand out initially. Even the publishers at Leeds Music didn't take it as the first or second song I gave them. They got it only because I signed as a staff writer. Luckily, it stood out for Steppenwolf. It's like a fluke rather than an achievement, though."
    • This was the second single from Steppenwolf's first album. The first single, "Sookie Sookie," was a flop.
    • Frontman John Kay (from Rolling Stone magazine's "Top 500 Songs): "Every generation thinks they're born to be wild and they can identify with that song as their anthem." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
    • In an interview for CHMR FM, John Kay told Terry Parsons that when Mars Bonfire first introduced him to the song, it was intended as a folk ballad about life on the open road. Once Steppenwolf began working with the song, the tempo was increased, and an iconic rock and roll song resulted.
    • Movies this has been used in include Coming Home, One Crazy Summer, Opportunity Knocks, Dr. Dolittle 2, and Speechless.
    • This wasn't released in the UK until 1969.
    • In 1994, Ozzy Osbourne did a duet of this with Miss Piggy. It was released on an album called Kermit Unpigged, with featured rock stars singing with Muppets.
    • This has been covered by U2, Blue Oyster Cult, MC Shan, and The Cult. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
    • In 2004, Paris Hilton asked Steppenwolf to use this as part of her show, The Simple Life 2. Steppenwolf adamantly denied. (thanks, Cody - new york city, NY)
    • Hinder recorded this in 2007 for TNT's coverage of NASCAR. It also appears on the re-release of Hinder's album Extreme Behavior.
    • This record was the regular finisher for rock group Slade in the 1970s and is one of the key tracks of their acclaimed Slade Alive! album, it also features on their early album Beginnings and the Slade Live at Reading EP. (thanks, Kim Wells - Aylesbury, United Kingdom)

You know I can be found
    Sitting home all alone
    If you can't come around
    At least please telephone
Don't Be Cruel to who a heart that's true

Baby, if I made you mad
For something I might have said
    Please, let's forget the past
    The future looks bright ahead
Don't be cruel to who a heart that's true
I don't want no other love
Baby it's just you I'm thinking of

    Don't stop thinking of me
Don't make me feel this way
Come on over here and love me
You know what I want you to say
Don't be cruel to who a heart that's true
    Why should we be apart?
I really love you baby, cross my heart

Let's walk up to the preacher
And let us say I do
Then you'll know you'll have me
And I'll know that I'll have you,
Don't be cruel to who a heart that's true
I don't want no other love,

    Don't Be Cruel Song Chart
  • This was released as a single with "Hound Dog." It is the only single in history to have both sides reach #1 in the US. Joel Whitburn, who writes the definitive books on the subject , told the Forgotten Hits newsletter: "As far as the two-sided Presley hit 'Hound Dog" / "Don't Be Cruel,' I've always tabulated that single 45 as two #1 hits. 'Hound Dog' was the first title to chart and the first one to be listed as the lead #1 song. Billboard's 'Best Sellers in Stores' chart listed the the #1 song on 8/18/56 as 'Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel.' It was also shown that way when it first topped the 'Most Played in Juke Boxes' chart on 9/1/56. There is absolutely no doubt that the initial sales and 'buzz' about this record was for 'Hound Dog.' It was a smash #1 hit right out of the box. As airplay began to favor 'Don't Be Cruel,' the two titles were flip-flopped at #1, with 'Don't Be Cruel' actually showing more weeks as the #1 lead song. Again, I have always tabulated these two titles as two #1 songs. There is no way you can consider this 4-times platinum record as one #1 hit. And, neither does RIAA who awards gold and platinum selling records. They show 'Hound Dog' / 'Don't Be Cruel' as both receiving platinum designations."
  • This was written by Otis Blackwell, a songwriter who came up with a lot of hits for Elvis. In addition to this, he also wrote "Return to Sender," "All Shook Up," and "One Broken Heart for Sale" for Elvis. He also wrote "Fever," which was made famous by Peggy Lee, and "Great Balls Of Fire" for Jerry Lee Lewis. Blackwell died in 2002 at age 70. (thanks, Gary - Thetford, England)
  • On Christmas Eve 1955, Otis Blackwell found himself on the streets in front of the Brill Building in New York City trying to stay warm. Things weren't going well for Blackwell - it was raining and there were leaks in the soles of his shoes. His friend Leroy Kirkland walked by and asked Otis if he had written any more songs. Otis said yes. Over the next week, he sold 6 of them to a publishing company for $25 each. Management at The Brill Building liked him so much they offered him a full-time job writing, and Blackwell accepted. Not long after, Otis got some very good news: This up-and-coming rock star wanted to record one of his songs. The deal was, the guy wanted half the writer's fee. Otis said, "No way I'm gonna give up half that song." His friends convinced him that half of something was better than all of nothing. Besides, this new singer just might "make it" and if he did, Otis' royalties would be tremendous. Over the next few days, Otis agreed. It wasn't Elvis who wanted half the "writer's fee." It was his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The song became one of Elvis' biggest and longest running hits. (Thanks to the disc jockey, author and music historian Ron Foster.)
  • Cheap Trick covered this in 1988. Their version hit #4 in the US.
  • Elvis' bass player Bill Black released an instrumental version of this in 1960 which hit US #11.
  • This took only about 20 minutes to record.
  • The single was released in July 1956, but it did not appear on an album until the March 1958 release of Elvis' Golden Records.
  • This song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.

    Failure and apathy descend
Success just hasn't been your friend
You live a lie high as the sky
This taste like iron, blood and greed
Tell us of what you'll never be
I won't ask why, just let it die

    Sleeping tight in your insanity
    The truth could remedy

You stole it all, sold them your soul give it up
You are, you are forever alone
Casting your stones, give it up
You are, you are the Shattered God

I try with every ounce of hell
To pry you open from your shell
    Twisting the knife
    Regretting your life
Your eyes are empty like your bed
Somehow you haven't wound up dead
    Chances passed by
    You'll never fly

Singing hymns about the sins you see
But you'll never hear from me

You stole it all, sold them your soul give it up
You are, you are forever alone
Casting your stones, give it up
You are, you are the shattered god

Feel the embrace, all of the hate
    I have watched you fall
Finding your words sounding like silence
    You've already said it all

You stole it all, sold them your soul give it up
You are, you are forever alone
Casting your stones, give it up
You are, you are the shattered god

"The song is a wink and a nod and a tribute to the idea that the good guy doesn't always lose."

    A World Without Love Lyrics

    Please lock me away
    And don't allow the day
    Here inside where I hide
    With my loneliness

    [Chorus]
    I don't care what they say I won't stay
    In A World Without Love

    Birds sing out of tune
And rain clouds hide the moon
    I'm OK, here I'll stay
    With my loneliness

    [Chorus]

So I wait and in a while
I will see my true love's smile
She may come, I know not when
    When she does I lose
    So baby until then

    Lock me away
    And don't allow the day
    Here inside where I hide
    With my loneliness

    [Chorus]

So I wait and in a while
I will see my true love's smile
She may come, I know not when
    When she does I lose
    So baby until then

    Lock me away
    And don't allow the day
    Here inside where I hide
    With my loneliness

    [Chorus: x2]

  • John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote this song. It is the biggest hit they wrote that was not released by The Beatles. It became the first and biggest hit for Peter & Gordon.
  • Peter & Gordon are Peter Asher and Gordon Waller. Paul McCartney went out with Asher's sister, the actress Jane Asher, which is how he met Peter. In the '60s, Jane had a famous father, a really famous boyfriend, and some prominent movie roles, including the 1966 film Alfie. In later years, she became an author and an expert on baked goods. She runs her own business called Jane Asher Party Cakes.
  • Pete Asher recalled in a 2010 interview with Gibson.com how the duo came to record this song: "Paul had played Gordon and me that song at some point, just in passing. It was really just half a song. It didn't yet have a bridge. Gordon and I were working at clubs in London at that time, and we got offered a record deal by EMI, who saw us as an English version of The Kingston Trio, or a Peter, Paul and Mary type of thing. We did the American folk song '500 Miles,' and that was the song they were thinking would be our first single. Anyway, we signed the record deal with EMI, and set the date for our first recording session. At that point I went to Paul and asked him if that orphaned song was still up for grabs, since we needed three or four songs to record on that first day in the studio. Paul said we could have it, so I asked him to finish the bridge. And he did. As I recall, the bridge came in the nick of time for us to record; World Without Love' at that first session."
  • Vic Flick, who played on many hit songs recorded in England, was the guitarist on this track. He told us, "This was the first time I used my Vox electric 12 string guitar. It was terrible to play, with a high action and not a very good sound. Things have improved, I'm pleased to say. Still it was a new sound and added to the character of the recording. I have the memory of the organist having his organ being brought into the studio by four road workers he cajoled into lifting it from his van. The workers were looking around in amazement at the big Studio 2 at EMI and tripping over the cables. Peter & Gordon were professional and did a great job. Peter Asher is now something big at Sony and was nice enough to write a letter confirming I was on the recording. The letter was needed to prove to the collection agency I was on the recording so I would get some sort of residual."
  • Peter Asher was the manager of James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt.
  • This was meant to be recorded by The Beatles, but that plan was vetoed by John Lennon. Asher explained: "John thought the first line 'Please lock me away' was laughable."
  • The only known recording of the song by any member of the Beatles is the original demo performed by McCartney . The tape is now in Peter Asher's possession.

    Love You Like That Lyrics

Hey girl, I’m just a small town run around
I get my kicks out on the outskirts of town
I could never do it like a pretty city boy
I’m more a fishin’ in the dark nitty gritty boy
So lay back and let me paint you a picture
The way I wanna kiss you is

    Slow as the Mississippi
Strong as a fifth of whiskey
Steady as a Tom Petty track
I wanna love, wanna Love You Like That
    Deeper than a sunset sky
    Sweeter than Muscadine wine
All night ‘til the sun comes back
I wanna love, wanna love, wanna love you like that

When I’m with you I can see down the road girl
Not just the gravel one we’re travelin’ on girl
And I’m bettin’ that it’s gonna be a wild ride
But I promise that I’m gonna be there by your side
I think we got another memory in the makin’
So baby let’s take it, take it

    Slow as the Mississippi
Strong as a fifth of whiskey
Steady as a Tom Petty track
I wanna love, wanna love you like that
    Deeper than a sunset sky
    Sweeter than Muscadine wine
All night ‘til the sun comes back
I wanna love, wanna love, wanna love you like that

I ain’t gonna do it like a pretty city boy
I’m a fishin’ in the dark nitty gritty boy
    So let me love you

    Slow as the Mississippi
Strong as a fifth of whiskey
Steady as a Tom Petty track, girl
I wanna love, wanna love you like that
    Deeper than a sunset sky
    Sweeter than Muscadine wine
All night ‘til the sun comes back
I wanna love, wanna love, wanna love you like that

Baby, I wanna love, wanna love, wanna love you like that

  • Virginia native Canaan Smith relocated to Nashville during his college years and began to gig in the local bars and clubs. Smith achieved his first credit on a hit single after landing a publishing deal when he co-wrote "Runaway" for Love and Theft. He eventually landed a recording contract with Mercury Records and released his debut single, "We Got Us," early in 2012.
  • This is Smith's second single and it has a straightforward message. "I just love how the song is about loving your woman long and strong," said Smith. "It's kind of a tough guy's perspective on how he's gonna love his woman and treat her."
  • Canaan Smith wrote this song with Brett and Jim Beavers. "We started thinking about cool metaphors like the flow of the Mississippi," Smith recalled of his co-writing session with the Beavers brothers. "That river moves pretty damn slow, and we thought that'd be a sexy line to talk about loving somebody that slowly. It was one of those moments where you're going for it, reaching, digging as deep as we could for metaphors and at the end of the day we had no idea this would be a hit single. You just never know, but it definitely felt special in the moment."
  • Smith commented that the song is real in every sense of the word. "I think 'Love You Like That' is just a perfect example of how a man's man can still say I love you without sounding like a girly girl," he said. "I think the country guys out there, they're not shying away from singing this song because it's kind of just like every day dude, just part of our everyday lives is finding the love of your life and that's a good thing to hold on to."

"When you find it let them know how long you're going to love them, long as till the sun comes back and even longer than that, 'slow as the Mississippi,' strong as whiskey. Be proud of that love," Smith continued. "Be proud of what you've got. And I think people are staking their claim and saying, 'That's who I am.'"

Money (That's What I Want) Lyrics

The best things in life are free
But you can give then to the birds and bees
    I need Money (That's What I Want)
    That's what I want (that's what I want)
    That's what I want (that's what I want)
    That's what I want (that's what I want)

Your love give me such a thrill
But your love don't pay my bills
    I need money (that's what I want)
    That's what I want (that's what I want)
    That's what I want (that's what I want)
    That's what I want (that's what I want)

Money don't get everything, it's true
But what it don't get, I can't use
    I need money (that's what I want)
    That's what I want (that's what I want)
    That's what I want (that's what I want)
    That's what I want (that's what I want)

    Money (that's what I want)
Lots of money (that's what I want)
Whole lot of money (that's what I want)
    Aha (that's what I want)
Aha ha ha ha ha(that's what I want)
Whoa yeah (that's what I want)

Give me money (that's what I want)
Lots of money (that's what I want)
Always need greens (that's what I want)
    That's right baby that's what I need(that's what I want)
Aha ha ha ha ha (that's what I want)
Whoa yeah (that's what I want)

  • This lighthearted song about the love of money earned lots of cash for Berry Gordy and helped get his Motown label off the ground. Gordy started Tamla Records in 1959, and "Money" was the eighth single released from the label, and the first to become a hit, making #23 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B charts.

The original release was in August, 1959, but the song didn't hit until it was re-released in early 1960 on Anna Records, which was the label formed by Berry's sisters Anna and Gwendolyn Gordy along with the songwriter Billy Davis. Anna Records had a better distribution system in place at the time, which helped promote the single.

Berry Gordy started calling his company "Motown Records" in 1960, and it became one of the most successful and respected labels of all time.
  • Berry Gordy wrote this song with Janie Bradford, who contributed to Motown as a writer and in an administrative role. She and Gordy had previously written two songs for Jackie Wilson's first album. On "Money," they turn the sentiment "money can't buy happiness" on its head, insisting that the best things in life are not free.
  • This was the only hit for Barrett Strong as an artist, but he wrote many classic songs with fellow Motown writer Norman Whitfield, including "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone," "War" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Growing up, Strong was a member of a gospel group called The Strong Singers. He was just 18 when he recorded "Money."
  • Motown would eventually develop a house band known as "The Funk Brothers," but in 1959, they were still scrambling for musicians. On this track, Strong played the piano, Benny Benjamin (who became a Motown mainstay) played the drums, Brian Holland (later famous as part of the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team) played tambourine, and a white musician named Eugene Grew played guitar. Grew found himself on the session after auditioning for Berry Gordy with his band.
  • The timing of this song was interesting, as it was a hit amidst the Payola scandal, where disc jockeys were being investigated for taking bribes in exchange for playing records. Berry Gordy was warned that disc jockeys wouldn't play a song about craving cash, but they showed no such reservations.
  • The lyrics to this song came out of one of Berry Gordy's favorite songwriting techniques: he would ask questions and try to answer them. The question was "What do people want most?" The obvious answer, love, had been done many times before, so money was the choice. According to his co-writer Janie Bradford, Gordy would ask these questions out loud, and she's the one who answered "money - that's what I want" in response. Gordy came up with what would become the first and third verses, and she found the second verse, with the line, "Your love gives me such a thrill, but your love can't pay my bills." In another era, Bradford could have written songs for Destiny's Child.
  • This was one of the first songs recorded at Motown's soon-to-be-famous Studio A, which was part of the two-story house Berry Gordy bought at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit to serve as company headquarters. The studio was a photography studio before Motown took over.
  • This was used in the 1978 movie Animal House, helping establish it as a frat party staple.
  • The Beatles covered this in 1963. The Rolling Stones also covered it. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • In 1979 the Flying Lizards hit #5 UK with a minimalist cover. Their version was recorded in one day in the band leader David Cunningham's living room. This version was featured in the films The Wedding Singer (1998) and Charlie's Angels (2000).

Flying Lizard's frontman David Cunningham recalled in Mojo magazine March 2008: "We weren't going to get a decent piano sound with our one microphone. So we chucked in things to dampen the strings - an ashtray, a telephone directory. That gave us the percussive piano sound."

  • Co-written by Cheryl's Girls Aloud bandmate and best friend Nicola Roberts, this song is about a passionate but turbulent relationship. Roberts teamed up for the tune with producer Lucas Secon, who has worked with The Pussycat Dolls, Sugababes, Kylie Minogue and Pixie Lott.
  • Cheryl told Digital Spy she thinks a lot of people will be able to relate to the song. "At some point in your life you have a relationship where you're like, 'Go away, you asshole...in fact can we make up?,'" she said. "Especially young people with that passionate, teenage relationship you have where you're screaming and fighting one minute and then you're like, 'Can I come round?' the next."

"I'm always bearing in mind if people will relate," Cheryl added, "and Nicola [Roberts] wrote that, which makes it even more special."
