The group's guitarist Robbie Van Leeuwen wrote this song. The group is from The Netherlands, which led to an interesting translation problem when Shocking Blue lead singer Mariska Veres sang the English lyrics. Van Leeuwen wrote the first line down incorrectly: what was supposed to be "A goddess on the mountain top" he wrote as "A goddness on the mountain top," and that's exactly how Veres sang it. Most listeners didn't notice, and the many cover versions corrected the error, but the result was a #1 hit with a misspoken first line thanks to a typo.

The female vocal trio Bananarama recorded this in 1986. It was one of the first songs they started performing when they formed the band in 1979, but they wanted to record original songs first so they would be taken seriously.

Their version was produced by the team of Stock, Aitken and Waterman, who worked on hits by Rick Astley ("Never Gonna Give You Up"), Dead or Alive ("You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)") and Kylie Minogue ("I Should Be So Lucky").

The distinctive guitar riff was taken from The Who's "Pinball Wizard."

This was produced by Jerry Ross, who also produced another Dutch group, Tee Set, who performed "Ma Belle Amie". Ross also produced an album of orchestral arrangements of his (primarily) Dutch stable of hits, under the name Jerry Ross Symposium. (thanks, Jeff - Scottsdale, AZ)

In the US, both this and the Bananarama cover version reached #1, making it one of the few songs to do so. Strangely, in the UK both Shocking Blue and Bananarama reached #8 with "Venus" and both spent 13 weeks on the chart with the song. (thanks, Adam - Dewsbury, England)

On an episode of the MTV cartoon Beavis And Butthead, Butthead makes up his own lyrics to this but gets frustrated when he can't think of anything that rhymes with "Venus."

In Shocking Blue's home country, this never made it to #1. After its success in the States, the song was re-released, but climbed no further that #3 on the Dutch pop chart.

In 1959, Frankie Avalon had a US #1 hit with the same title. There were two other instances of different songs with identical titles reaching #1 on the Billboard charts. "My Love" was #1 for Petula Clark in 1966 and another "My Love" turned the trick for McCartney & Wings in 1973. Then "Best Of My Love" topped the charts for the Eagles in 1973 and a different song of the same title was #1 for The Emotions in 1977. (thanks, Rick - Calgary, Canada)

This was written by Scott Weiland and STP bass player Robert DeLeo while the band was on tour. Weiland considered it a love song for his wife at the time, Mary, dealing with the possibility of loss.

"'Wonderful' has me dreaming about my death," he wrote in his memoir. "In the next world, I envision Mary as my guide."

Mary Forsberg was Weiland's second wife. They were married from 2000-2007.

According to Weiland, this was his favorite Stone Temple Pilots ballad.

A live version featuring guest vocals by Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington is on the album Family Values 2001. STP was a big influence on Bennington, and he got to know the band when both groups played the Family Values Tour. In 2013, Bennington took over as the group's lead singer.

The song is a slice of junkie mythology, which finds the songstess imagining herself as a ghost wafting along the Golborne road in Notting Hill, London. Faithfull told Mojo magazine. "I have been up the Golbourne road to score. but I didn't realise until I went back there with Rob (Ellis, producer) to the fish and chip shop. Days of the Week Song Chart

Lead singer Scott Weiland wrote this about how he felt when he got out of prison; he spent five months in jail in 1999 for violating his probation from a heroin conviction. Every day he was faced with new challenges and new insecurities.

This was released as the first single from the fifth Stone Temple Pilots album, Shangri-La Dee Da. The band wanted the harder-edged "Coma" to be the first single, but their record company insisted on "Days of the Week," deeming it more commercial.

Weiland: "A rock 'n' roll feel of Zeppelin during the Presence period, but melodically and lyrically where I was coming from was Elvis Costello or Joe Jackson ."

In the video, the band is portrayed as door-to-door salesmen who escape their monotonous lives by turning into astronauts and blasting into space. Weiland was a door-to-door salesman when he was 19.

In the video, Scott Weiland is floating in space through the airlock. This is a reference to Stanley Kubrick's epic movie 2001: A Space Odyssey when David Bowman, the main character in the film, is denied access to the ship by HAL 9000 (the ship's main computer). Nashville songwriter Barry Dean penned this song with Tom Douglas about his daughter, who was born with special needs, and the challenges involved in dealing with her disability. He told Billboard magazine: "It's actually torn out of my journal, and Tom Douglas helped to shape all of that."

N.I.B. Song Chart

In this song, Satan falls in love with a human woman and tries to seduce her. He turns out to be very charming and the early lyrics are quite poetic. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)

The title refers to drummer Bill Ward's beard. The band called him "Nibby" because they thought it looked like the nib on the end of a pen (Ozzy came up with the nickname when he on acid and thought Geezer Butler was turning into a fountain pen). Says Butler: Originally it was Nib, which was Bill's beard. When I wrote N.I.B., I couldn't think of a title for the song, so I just called it Nib, after Bill's beard. To make it more intriguing I put punctuation marks in there to make it N.I.B. By the time it got to America, they translated it to Nativity In Black. (thanks, Greg - Triad, NC)

Many fans thought the title stood for "Nativity In Black" or "Name In Blood."

The bass intro is called "Bassically." It is listed as a separate song on US versions of the album.

"Nativity In Black" is the name of two Black Sabbath tribute albums released in 1994 and 2000. Groups contributing to the albums include Megadeth, Godsmack, Biohazzard, and Faith No More.

The first Nativity In Black album, released in 1994, contains a cover of this by Ugly Kid Joe. The second, from 2000, contains a version from Primus with Ozzy Osbourne.

In November of 1969, Black Sabbath appeared on John Peel's Top Gear radio show, where they played this song along with "Black Sabbath," "Behind the Wall of Sleep," and "Sleeping Village." It was some great early exposure for the band.

Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me) Song Chart

In an interview with VH1, lead singer Pat Monahan revealed that he wrote this song about the death of his mother. Train released their first album in 1998, and were touring that year when Monahan's mother was dying of lung cancer - she was a heavy smoker. This was before the widespread use of cell phones, and Monahan made many stops to pay phones on the tour to speak with his mom during this difficult time. In December of that year, his mother died, and in early 1999 Train was working on their next album when their record company started pressuring them for a hit. Monahan returned to his childhood home in Pennsylvania, and woke one morning with the words "back in the atmosphere" in his head. Beginning a time of healing, he started to compose the song. Said Monahan: "Loss of the most important person in my life was heavy on my mind, and the thought of 'what if no one ever really leaves? What if she's here but different. The idea was, she's back here in the atmosphere."

He recorded a demo of the song and played it a week later for Donnie Ienner, who was president of their record company, Columbia. While Monahan wasn't sure how the song would go over, Ienner loved it and told him it was his Grammy song. He was right: It won Grammys for Best Rock Song and Best Instrumental Arrangement With Accompanying Vocalist. Ienner had Train record the song quickly so they could put it on the album and use it as the title track.

The string section was arranged by Paul Buckmaster, who has done arrangements for Elton John, David Bowie, and The Rolling Stones.

Pat Monahan said of this song: "It was an obvious connection between me and my mother. 'Drops of Jupiter' was as much about me being on a voyage and trying to find out who I am. The best thing we can do about loss of love is find ourselves through it."

Train was in danger of becoming a one-hit-wonder before they released this. Their first hit, "Meet Virginia," was released 2 years earlier.

It was a few years before Monahan revealed the story behind this song, and the common interpretation is that it was about a woman who leaves her man to find out if they belong together. Monahan would give vague answers when asked about the song, at one point saying: "This is a woman who's strong and has to find out who she is and a man willing to let her do that."

This is the type of song which lends itself to personal interpretation, and was most often considered to be about a former lover, a young woman or just someone the writer knew who went on a voyage of self-discovery - not necessarily by traveling to distant lands.

When they suffer personal tragedy, many people feel a closeness to their departed loved one. This is not a song about reincarnation as such, but about the idea that no one ever really leaves us. In spite of the different subject matter, it bears a striking resemblance to the Cat Stevens composition "On The Road To Find Out." Whatever, it obviously struck a chord with many people, and deservedly spent over a year on the Billboard Hot 100.

Monahan has a permanent scar on his chin, which could explain the line, "One without a permanent scar."

Brendan O'Brien produced this track. He has also worked with Pearl Jam and The Stone Temple Pilots. He became interested in the band when he heard their cover of "Ramble On" on the radio.

Train performed an updated version of this song at the 2002 Grammy awards, which included a cello prelude by Denise Djokic and a full orchestra. When Train won the award for Best Rock Song, Monahan thanked his mother.

This ascended to the top 10 of the Adult Contemporary chart in its 49th week, marking the longest climb to the top 10 on that tally by any act.

On December 25, 2009 Two and a Half Men actor Charlie Sheen was arrested on charges of domestic violence against his wife Brooke Mueller. According to Us Magazine their Christmas Day brawl was caused by this song. Sheen allegedly told police that he and his daughter share a love for Drops of Jupiter, which angered Mueller. She lashed out, "You have a song [that] you share with your daughter, but not one with me?" which ignited the fight. Patrick Monahan responded to the news on Twitter, "I'm pretty sure that Drops of Jupiter is a positive part of Charlie Sheen and his daughter's relationship. Just gonna look at it that way."

The song returned to the UK singles chart in April 2012 after being performed by audtionee Phil Poole on The Voice.

Wrapped Up Song Chart

The lead single from Never Been Better, this features American rapper Travie McCoy, who had an international smash hit in 2010 with "Billionaire." McCoy is also the lead vocalist of the rap rock band Gym Class Heroes.

Murs and McCoy co-wrote the song with the English songwriter Steve Robson and American hitmaker Claude Kelly. Robson and Kelly have co-penned and produced singles on all of Murs' previous albums including his UK chart-toppers "Please Don't Let Me Go", "Dance With Me Tonight" and "Troublemaker."

Olly Murs told Billboard magazine the story of the tune. "We were just writing different songs, and I said, 'Why don't we just try this other song today, something a bit disco-y, something a bit old school,' and that's what we came up with," he recalled. "We didn't think it was going to be a single when we were writing it, really. We just kind of went with the vibe. Sort of instantly we felt, 'This is actually a really good song and this could be a hit,' you know? That was kind of the vibe behind it."
