Only Happy When It Rains Song Chart

This is about enjoying being depressed, similar to a Country song by Patty Loveless which features the lyric, "You Can Feel Bad If It Makes You Feel Better." When the members of Garbage met for the first time, they found that they shared a love for dark music.

In a 1995 interview with Addicted to Noise, Steve Marker, the band's guitarist, said, "It's really just us poking fun of ourselves... We're poking fun at the alternatrock angst, wearing your heart on your sleeve thing and at ourselves for writing such dark songs." This is a similar sentiment to the sarcasm behind The Smith's 1984 single "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now."

Singer Shirley Manson is from Scotland, where it rains frequently. She thinks of the song as an example of the Scots' self-deprecating humor.

Sangria Song Chart

According to Shelton, this JT Harding, Josh Osborne and Trevor Rosen penned cut is "one of the sexiest songs" he's ever recorded. "It sounds like something that came from a different time," he said, "almost like something Chris Isaak would have had on one of his records at some point."

"It's just about one of those nights where you drink too much and you're gonna end up hookin' up with this person, it's just inevitable," he added. "It's not too over the top, but it's pure sex, that's the only way I know to describe that song."

The song's music video was filmed at Miranda Lambert's bed and breakfast, The Ladysmith, in the couple's adopted hometown of Tishomingo, Oklahoma.

According to Rosen, who is also a guitarist and keyboardist for the country band Old Dominion, co-writer Osborne originally intended this for Sara Evans but it wasn't quite right. Rosen told Entertainment Weekly: "So he had that title he was like, 'I was imagining this with a girl singing, but what if it was a guy saying, 'Your lips taste like sangria?' And we just sort of found that groove - we were going for Chris Isaak kind of sexy groove and I started playing that sort of Spanish-y kind of riff and it took off."

Isis Song Chart

This song is about a man who has recently split from his wife, Isis. He leaves town atop a pony headed "for the wild unknown country." Along his way, he meets with a shady character and the both of them begin a search for treasure. During the journey, the man keeps thinking back to his ex-wife:

This was written while Dylan was separating from his then-wife, Sara, therefore many fans believe this song alludes to the couple's turbulent relationship. This argument is supported by the fact it features on the album, Desire, which closes with the poignant "Sara," during which Dylan openly sings about his "radiant jewel, mystical wife." This biographical approach to writing was a rare feat for Dylan, who usually preferred to write under personas (as in "Isis").

A live version of "Isis" features on the compilation album, Biograph. Dylan introduces it as "a song about marriage."

The female character in this song is named after Isis, the goddess in ancient Egyptian mythology who is idolized as the ideal wife and protective mother.

Bonnie McKee was less than impressed how the track turned out. "That was my tenth #1, so I'm grateful for it but I didn't want to give it up," she told The Idolator . "It was a song I had written for myself. They tweaked a couple lyrics and changed the title."

"The original title was 'Waking Up Diagonal.' It's the first line of the song," McKee continued. "I just thought it was more interesting than 'I Don't Care,' which is such a boring title to me. When I hear that song it breaks my heart a little bit because it's my story."

Just Can't Get Enough Song Chart

Depeche Mode founding member and keyboardist Vince Clarke wrote this song. It was inspired by "To Cut a Long Story Short" by Spandau Ballet.

Early Depeche Mode, under the direction of Clarke, had a more upbeat sound. In our interview with Vince Clarke, he explained: "Martin Gore writes in a different way than I do, so that's obviously the main difference. And they've developed this kind of a rock feel to their music. I'm more a fan of pop music, or I'm more of a fan of writing pop music, that's the most difference, I guess."

Clarke had just turned 20 when he wrote this song, which turned out to be the last one he wrote for Depeche Mode. He left the band after the Speak and Spell album was released, later joining Yaz and Erasure. The "Just Can't Get Enough" video is the only one he appears in. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

In an interview with Q magazine February 2008, vocalist Dave Gahan recalled recording Depeche Mode's debut album Speak and Spell and their early days as a band: "Vince (Clarke) was the leader at that point. By the time we got into the studio, Vince had got bored with it. He didn't like the idea of having to deal with other personalities. He wanted to be in control. That's the only album where the songs had already been performed for a year and a half beforehand, and we went into the studio and recorded them as we would live. I think Daniel (Miller, their record label boss) saw us as a cross between the Ramones and the Beach Boys, in an electronic way - fast and short with really simple riffs. We were courted by major labels and were very suspicious of signing a deal that meant 5 albums. We'd come from that Punk ethic: we just wanted to make a single. Daniel came along and that's all he really had the money to do, so it kind of worked. We wanted to keep in control. We never thought much beyond the next single and playing some gigs. That time was brilliant."

Not everyone appreciated the Speak and Spell album. Rolling Stone magazine called it "PG-rated fluff."

This was used in popular ads for The Gap, which featured young people lip-synching to this in front of a white background. They were selling a line of leather.

Vince Clarke has been known to sing this with an acoustic guitar at Erasure concert dates. Clarke formed Erasure with Andy Bell a few years after leaving Depeche Mode. (thanks, Kelly - Portland, OR)

This became the first Depeche Mode song used in a movie when it was featured in the 1982 film Summer Lovers. It was also used in The Wedding Singer in 1998.

This was Depeche Mode's first top 10 single in the UK, and it became a club favorite in the US.

Girl group The Saturdays covered this song in 2009 for the Comic Relief charity.

Colbie Caillat wrote this song about her struggles to overcome stage fright, a fear that plagues her even after years of professionally performing.

"Yeah, it's still a struggle," she told ABC News Radio. "Like, every time I do it, it gets a little easier and a little better and I watch back, I'm like, 'Oh, OK, it wasn't as bad as I thought in my mind.' But no, it's still there. I think it'll be there forever, and that's just something I'm learning to accept."

The topic of stage fright is something that Caillat previously visited on her 2007 Coco track "One Fine Wire." Also the title of her sophomore album Breakthrough, was inspired by the need to overcome her fears and learn to love touring.

Caillat generally uses fairly sparse instrumentation on her tunes, so this song is a big departure as it is filled with countless instruments and sounds. She told Billboard magazine: "We wanted it to sound really huge and loud and strong, then having the lyrics be more vulnerable. I wrote ['Live It Up'] about my stage fright and how I've struggled with that my entire life. To me, it was a really fun balance having a song that sounds so different but lyrics that are just honestly what I'm going through."

Boogie Chillen Song Chart

John Lee Hooker grew up on a plantation in Mississippi and eventually made his way to Detroit, bypassing the blues hotbed of Chicago.

In 1948, Hooker showed up at the office of a Detroit record store/label owner named Bernard Besman, and presented him with a demo. Besman provided the studio and produced this song for Hooker. They worked together for the next four years, recording many of Hooker's songs, but "Boogie Chillen" was the big hit. The song went to the top of what was then known as the "race" charts, and sold over a million copies after Besman leased the rights to distribute the song to Modern Records. When the song took off, Hooker still had his day job working as a janitor in a Chrysler factory.

Hooker is the only person performing on the song. The only sounds are his voice, guitar, and stomping feet. The tapping sounds came from bottle caps attached to the soles of his shoes.

"Chillen" is Southern slang for "Children." The song is known by a variety of titles, including "Boogie Chillun" and "Boogie Children."

When Hooker sings about going to Henry's Swing Club on Hastings Street, he's referring to a real club in the Black Bottom section of Detroit. The area, which is where the Black Bottom dance got its name, was home to various Blues clubs, speakeasies, pool halls and other places of ill repute. Before Hooker arrived, musicians like Maceo Merriweather and Beulah Wallace performed there along with many traveling musicians. Hastings Street was wiped out in 1957 when the highway I-75 was built through it.

Hooker recorded two more versions of this song, including a remake in 1970 with the band Canned Heat. It was included on an album called Hooker 'n' Heat

ZZ Top reworked this into their 1973 hit "La Grange." In 1992, Bernard Besman, who was Hooker's producer and controlled the copyright to "Boogie Chillen," sued ZZ Top, but a court eventually ruled that Hooker's song was in the public domain.

Hooker died in 2001 at age 83.

In the book Hound Dog: The Leiber & Stoller Autobiography , Jerry Leiber tells of hearing this song for the first time. He was working at a record store called Norty's circa 1950 while still in high school. Lester Sill, a sales manager for Modern Records, came into the store and started playing demos for Leiber, mistaking him for the store owner. Leiber loved the music because it reminded him of Hunter Hancock's radio show. He says of the song, "Suddenly the epiphany re-exploded, expanded, and knocked me on my ass." This experience re-affirmed his ambition to someday write songs. In the ensuing years, Lester Sill became Leiber and Stoller's mentor as they entered the music business.

This was the first song Buddy Guy learned how to play on guitar. Growing up in Lettsworth, Louisiana in a small house with no electricity or running water, Guy heard this song when a family friend, Henry "Coot" Smith, would come over and play it on his guitar. Guy would play what he could of the song on homemade instruments, and when he turned 13, his dad bought Coot's guitar for Buddy, and he was soon playing "Boogie Chillen" on the instrument.

Critical Mass Song Chart

This rocker was written by Nuclear Assault frontman John Connelly and bass player Dan Lilker. The song is a warning about impeding environmental disaster if we don't start taking care of the Earth. This was a prescient statement in 1989, as decades later scientists made a clarion call for action, explaining that global warming was devastating the planet.

The "critical mass" Connelly sings about is the point of no return where there is nothing we can do about the Earth's destruction. Scientists would later explain that there could indeed reach a point where damage to the Earth is irreversible.

In our interview with Dan Lilker , he explained: "It was just a real strong, heavy song. You have to balance your thrash songs with your heavy, straight-ahead, mid-paced songs."
