Promises in the Dark Lyrics

Never again, isn't that what you said?
You've been through this before
An' you swore this time you'd think with your head
No one, would ever have you again
And if taking was gonna get done
You'd decide where and when
Just when you think you got it down
Your heart securely tied and bound
They whisper, Promises in the Dark

Armed and ready, you fought love battles in the night
But too many opponents made you weary of the fight
Blinded by passion, you foolishly let someone in
All the warnings went off in your head
Still you had to give in

Just when you think you got it down
Resistance nowhere to be found
They whisper, promises in the dark

But promises, you know what they're for
It sounds so convincing, but you heard it before
Cause talk is cheap and you gotta be sure
And so you put up your guard
And you try to be hard
But your heart says try again

You desperately search for a way to conquer the fear
No line of attack has been planned to fight back the tears
Where brave and restless dreams are both won and lost
On the edge is where it seems it's well worth the cost
Just when you think you got it down
Your heart in pieces on the ground
They whisper, promises in the... Dark

Promises in the Dark Song Chart
  • Benatar wrote this song with her guitarist and future husband Neil Giraldo. The song deals with trials and tribulations of past relationships and how they affect the one you're in now. Haven't we all had to tend the emotional scars left behind from whoever got there first? In the case of Giraldo and Benatar, things worked out quite well: they got married in a cow pasture in Maui in 1982, and have been married ever since. They've also continued their musical partnership as well, with Giraldo producing all of Benatar's next albums.
  • Giraldo and Benatar were dating when they wrote this song, which was early in their musical partnership. In our interview with Neil Giraldo , he explained: "That was a song that Patricia started first. I mean, I start probably 93% of them, and she'll jump in after I get it started. But she actually started writing that on an airplane. And then she put some words together, and she said, 'Here, try to do something with this thing.'

Actually she slipped the words under the door of our music room in this little house we had. We wrote that I think in 1980. Even though we could have put it on Crimes of Passion, we ended up putting it on Precious Time instead. But she put the words under the door because she was too embarrassed to let me see the words face to face.

Then she had a little bit of an idea of a melody, so I took a little bit of what that was, and I wrote it on piano in our little music room. My favorite guitar I had in the room at the time fell and busted while I was writing, and busted the top of the neck off it. So that was like a curse. And then when we went to record it, we had everything but the last verse, and then I just wrote the words for the last verse in the studio while we were recording it. So that's how that one goes."
  • Precious Time cracked the #1 spot on the US albums chart for a week, and helped establish Benatar as an '80s icon. A former bank clerk and singing waitress, she was a classically trained singer who could rock the spandex and big jewelry, making her an MTV favorite as well as a mainstay on Pop radio.
  • Hinting at the personal nature of this song, Benatar told Songwriter Connection magazine in 1984: "Sometimes I really hate singing in the first person - it's so personal sometimes... I do mostly observational lyric but if it's directly from something that happened, I can't stand to sing it in first person. I'd rather sing it as we or they or you, or something else."
  • Neil Giraldo tells us that he knew early on that this song had hit potential. He explained: "I thought it was deep in a really good way. I think that it was a commercial hit, but I love the expression of the melody. It gave a lot of room for the vocal to be powerful. And then when we rehearsed the song, that's where I came up with that little guitar riff, which is the signature to that break between the slow part and the fast part. When I hit that in rehearsal and I put the song way up tempo - because the song was a ballad - I found I hit that, then I knew, I went, 'Oh, we got something now. This is going to work.' I knew it right then we had it."

    Add Me In Lyrics

    Your body's an isosceles
And I'm just tryna try angles
    Your love is trigonometry
Just tryna solve the whole equation

What's it about you (about you) I wanna love you
Picking you up, picking you up, so I can touch you
Should we do that? Can I do that? (baby)
Answers are usually in the bed

    Substitution, Add Me In
Multiply my love, is that too much?
    Substitution
What's the problem, girl? Add me in (yeah)

Baby just add me, baby just add me in
Baby just add me, baby just add me in

I'll calculate her home invasion (girl, add it up)
Divide your legs and count to 3 (3, 2, 1, come on)
He's just not the answer baby
And that's just my hypothesis (real talk)

What's it about you (about you) I wanna love you
Picking you up, picking you up, so I can touch you
Should we do that? Can I do that? (baby)
Answers are usually in the bed

    Substitution, add me in
Multiply my love, is that too much?
    Substitution
What's the problem, girl? Add me in (yeah)

But if I said I loved you, (baby pick me) I need you
    Would you care?
So many things that I could learn
Baby if we do the math, it will equal up to me!

    Substitution, add me in
Multiply my love, is that too much?
    Substitution
What's the problem, girl? Add me in (yeah yeah, ooh)

Substitution, add me in (add me)
Multiply my love, is that too much?

  • This Danja-produced track has Brown drawing on mathematics metaphors to attract the interest of a girl:

    Substitution, add me in
    Multiply my love
    Is that too much?
    Substitution
    What's the problem, girl?
    Add me in
  • The mathematics-as-a-metaphor-for-love lyrical trick is not a new one, It was famously utilised by Sam Cooke in his 1960 hit "Wonderful World."

    Don't know much trigonometry.
    Don't know much about algebra,
Don't know what a slide rule is for.
But I do know that one and one is two,
And if this one could be with you,
What a wonderful world this would be
  • The song was produced by Nate "Danja" Hills, who previously collaborated with Brown on "Till I Die" from his Fortune album. Breezy described the tune to MTV News as being "old-school with a new-age feel."

Rock And Roll Part 2 Song Chart
  • This is better known as the "Hey" song because of the chant in the chorus... "da da da da da da da, Hey!" It's probably the greatest example of "Glam Rock," which was characterized by male lead singers dressed in outrageous, usually feminine clothes. Glitter was known more for his appearance than his music.
  • Glitter wrote this song with his producer, Mike Leander, who came up with a key element in the song: the compressed, metronomic drum sound that would later be copied by Sweet and various other Glam acts. Along with the drums, Leander layered big guitar riffs, lots of handclaps, and the vocal "Hey"'s performed by Glitter and his friends.
  • Glitter had a role on a TV show in England called Ready, Steady, Go. This is where he met Mike Leander, who used some studio time when a singer named David Essex ("Rock On") didn't show up for a session. He had Glitter and a bunch of their friends improvise different sounds over a beat he had from a song called "Shag Rag, That's My Bag." They ended up with a 15-minute dance song, which they edited some more and called "Rock And Roll Parts 1 And 2."
  • There is a "Rock And Roll Part 1," with lyrics that repeat "Rock And Roll" instead of "Hey." It was on the same album and released as the flip side of the single. Glitter and Leander didn't know which one to release as a single, so they released it as a double A-side and let radio stations pick.
  • Glitter's real name is Paul Gadd, and he previously recorded as Paul Raven. He had been recording since 1958, had been dropped by three record labels, and still did not have a hit until he came up with this song. It was his first release as "Gary Glitter," a name he took in homage to the "Glitter Rock" sound he was using. Glitter, who was overweight and in his mid-30s, went over the top with his outfits to promote this song, creating maximum spectacle with makeup and accessories. For a while, it looked like this song would flop along with Glitter's career, but it slowly caught on in Europe and gradually became very well-known, helped in large part by Glitter's image gimmick.
  • This got a big boost when Glitter was asked to perform it on the British TV show Top Of The Pops. For the show, Glitter had to put together a band, but since the performances on the show were lip-synched, they didn't need anyone to actually play. Glitter and Leander found a bunch of people to hold instruments and pretended to play during the show. They were called The Glitter Band.
  • In the '80s, Glitter went through bankruptcy and was arrested for drunk driving, but his downfall came in 1997 when he took his computer in for repair and the technician found kiddie porn on the hard drive. Glitter was arrested and sent to prison, where he served 2 months starting in November, 1999. After his release, he lived in Cuba and Cambodia. He is a very controversial figure in England, and could face great harm if he ever returned.
  • This is commonly used as a rallying cry at sporting events, including many hockey game venues as goal songs. When Glitter was arrested on child pornography charges in 1997, many stadiums stopped playing this.
  • This is the only song Glitter is known for in America, but he was very popular in England, where he had 10 more similar sounding Top 10 hits from 1972-1974, including "Hello Hello I'm Back Again," and "Do You Wanna Touch Me? (Oh Yeah)." His career started to slide in 1975 when he took on a Disco sound.
  • This has been used in a lot of movies, including The Full Monty, Bedazzled, Duets, and D2: The Mighty Ducks.
  • In 1987, Glitter released "Rock And Roll" parts 3 through 6. They were produced by Trevor Horn, who was a member of the Buggles.
  • In the UK, various Gary Glitter imitators cropped up, including the rather ludicrous Larry Lurex and Alvin Stardust.
  • In 1988, a group called The Timelords released a song called "Doctorin' The Tardis" that sampled this. The song went to #1 in England and made Glitter a lot of money, which he needed for legal bills and an extravagant lifestyle. The Timelords later became The KLF, who had a hit with "3AM Eternal."
  • This song's influence can be heard on many disco and glam rock tracks, but it also made an impact in the realm of metal: Iron Maiden's first single, "Running Free," was based on this song's beat.

Don't Be Gone Too Long Lyrics

I dug a single seed into the ground
    I hope it grows, grows
In a year or two if you're around
    You'll see a rose, rose
Pack me up and keep me hidden somewhere
    That you can find me
On a train to Paris going nowhere
    Trouble bridge behind me

Don't Be Gone Too Long (too long)
'Cause you won't be there to love me when you're gone
Don't be gone too long (too long)
Tell me who's gonna love me when you're gone

    When you're, when you're gone
    When you're gone
Golden leaves are dancing on the ground
    It's getting cold, cold
Safe from time, will be forever young
    Never old, old
See upon a fire out in space,
    Zooming up behind me
All the wonder written in your face
    Was there beside me

Don't be gone too long (too long)
'Cause you won't be there to love me when you're gone
Don't be gone too long (too long)
Tell me who's gonna love me when you're gone
    Oh oh
    When you're when you're gone
    Oh oh
    When you're gone

Bring it back to me, bring it back to me
    Is it really over?
Bring it back to me, bring it back to me (is it over?)
Bring it back to me, bring it back to me
    Is it really over? (Yeah)
Bring it back to me, bring it back to me

Don't be gone too long (too long) ('Cause it will be over)
'Cause you won't be there to love me when you're gone

What do you do when you don't get better
Strong arms get too, get too weak to hold her
Oh God, give me just enough strength to make it through

Sleepless, this madness is walking me out to the ledge
And stands there beside me, shivering out on the edge
And oh God all I, all I ask is a little relief, just a moment of peace

I don't want to live Without You
I'm not ready to live without you
So let's dance a little, laugh a little, hope a little more
'Cause I don't want to leave without you, without you

This thorn in my side, though it cuts and stings me
Has opened these eyes, I've never seen so clearly
And oh God, I thank You, 'cause You bring me to my knees
    Back on my knees

I heard a voice from the other side singing
    Hold fast, love lasts
As winter turns into summertime singing
    Hold fast, love lasts
I heard a voice from the other side singing
    Hold fast, love lasts
As winter turns into summertime singing
    Hold fast

  • For King & Country is a Christian pop duo made up of Australian brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone. In their teenage years, the Smallbones sang background vocals for their sister, gospel artist Rebecca St James . They are also the brothers-in-law of Jacob Fink, bassist for the band Foster the People.
  • Luke Smallbone endured during 2013 a life-threatening attack of ulcerative colitis. When he was at his worst, his wife, Courtney, feared that he was going to die and would be left without him.

This moving duet between Luke and Courtney details their worry surrounding his illness and how by experiencing great depths of pain and fear, he now has more joy and hope than ever before. Luke said: "The lyrics gave me the vision and the hope for what is to come. I know that I have today but I don't know if I have tomorrow, so in those moments, I am going to laugh, and I'm going to dance if I can. If this illness was to take me, it would take me as a very hopeful man."

    Ok so here we go
    Give me that
    Mhm, just like that
Yeah, that's starting to feel like music right there
Give me a lil something else
Let's take em, let's take em back

    Won't you bring it back?
    Won't you bring it back?
Yeah we'll bring it back, yeah we'll bring it back
Singing together, dancing in the street
Music playing, moving to the beat ooh
Back in the time, that music make me smiling
The song will change the weather, we can together
But somewhere along the lines we lost sight
And we made the music go away
Take away our joy and we started fighting
And before we lose another, today

Won't you save? And we'll bring it back? Say we'll bring it back
Gotta bring it back, gotta bring it back
Bring Back the Music, bring back the life
Bring back that feeling, feeling of love
    (Let me talk to 'em)

Songs of freedom, it's music make you free
It makes you happy, gave you all you need
Back in the time, it was ok to love
Music said the words you couldn't think off
But somewhere along the lines we lost sight
And we made the music go away
Took away our joy and we started fighting
And before we lose another, today

Won't you save? And we'll bring it back? Say we'll bring it back
Gotta bring it back, gotta bring it back
Bring back the music, bring back the life
Bring back that feeling, feeling of love

    Hey, hey, hey, hey
Bring back the music, oh bring back the music
Never let it go away (Bring it back)
    Hey, hey, hey
We need the music, yeah we need the music
Won't you let the music play? (Let it play)
Hey, hey, hey, bring back the music, oh bring back the music

  • This song was helmed at Jerry Wonda's studio by singer-songwriter and producer Kortney Pollard, who performs under the name of Mali Music. Pollard explained to The Boombox how he approached working with Hudson. "I wanted to approach it differently, I wanted to connect to her," he said. "I didn't want to be a person who [said], 'Hey this is a song that means a lot of me, but you can sing it!' I didn't want to come at it like that. I was explaining it to her, and she was just looking at me like, 'You are crazy!' I want you to talk to me, I want you to share your deepest ideas, just concepts you have for songs or something that you saw on TV that you thought was profound."

"I recorded a 20-minute audio clip on my phone of her just expressing herself, talking about it and I wrote all the songs from her thoughts and feelings," he continued. "I would structure it with music, use certain quotes that she would, she would put a twang on something, I'd put a twang on it in the song so when I re-presented it to her, they were her babies. None of them were foreign."

"I guess I'm the type of writer and producer that wants to bring back the true connection of what they want to say," Pollard concluded. "It's cool that you can tell an artist, 'Hey, I'm a robot I gotta sing this song, it's not really what I agree with.' It was really cool on songs like 'Bring Back the Music' and another one called 'Moan' that she wrote in tribute of her mother with all the crazy things that happened to her family, all the tragedy and loss she experienced."

    I'm A Slave 4 U Lyrics

I know I may be young, but I've got feelings too.
And I need to do what I feel like doing.
So let me go, and just listen.

All you people look at me like I'm a little girl.
Well did you ever think it'd be ok for me to step into this world.

Always saying little girl don't step into the club.
Well I'm just tryin' to find out why 'cause dancing's what I love.

Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)
Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)
Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)

I know I may come off quiet, I may come off shy.
But I feel like talking, feel like dancing when I see this guy.

What's practical is logical. What the hell, who cares?
All I know is I'm so happy when you're dancing there.

I'm a slave for you. I cannot hold it, I cannot control it.
I'm a slave for you. I won't deny it, I'm not trying to hide it.

Baby, don't you wanna, dance up on me,
(I just wanna dance next to you)
    To another time and place.
Oh baby, don't you wanna, dance up on me,
    (Are you ready)
Leaving behind my name, and age.
    (Lets go)

    (Like that)
    (You like it)
    (Now watch me)

Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)
Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)
Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)

I really wanna dance, tonight with you.
    (I just can't help myself)
I really wanna do what you want me to.
(I just feel I let myself go)

I really wanna dance, tonight with you.
    (Wanna see you move)
I really wanna do what you want me to.
But did you want me to.
    (Uh Uh Uh)

Baby, don't you wanna, dance up on me,
(I just wanna dance next to you)
    To another time and place.
Baby, don't you wanna, dance up on me,
    (Are you ready)
Leaving behind my name, and age.

I'm a slave for you (take that) I cannot hold it, I cannot control it.
I'm a slave (it just feels right) for you (it just feels good)
I won't deny it, I'm not trying to hide it (baby)

Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)
Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)
Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)

Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)
Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)
Get it get it, get it get it (Oh)

    [Panting]

I'm a slave for you (here we go now)
I cannot hold it, I cannot control it.
I'm a slave for you, (here we go) I won't deny it, (yeah)
I'm not trying to hide it.

    (Like that)

  • This premiered on the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards. Spears wore a live snake during the performance, which was set to look like a jungle, complete with a caged tiger. Britney was the big VMA draw at the time and expected to do something outrageous. The previous year, she stripped off most of her clothes while performing "Satisfaction."
  • The "4U" is a Prince thing. He has many songs with numbers and capital letters in the titles, including "I Would Die 4U."
  • The hip-hop production team The Neptunes wrote and produced this track, which is about a lady who will do anything for her man. The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) were red hot in 2001, doing not just production work, but also remixes for the likes of Backstreet Boys and Daft Punk, and also recording with their group, N.E.R.D.
  • This was the first single off Spears' third album, which she named Britney because it was her most personal. Like her first two albums, it debuted at #1 in the US.
  • The chorus is "Get it get it, get it get it," although it sounds like "Kitty kitty, kitty kitty."

    Wild Child Lyrics

Looks like royal in a thrift store dress
Keeps my heart and her hair a mess
She goes where the wind suggests she goes, who knows
Got a spirit that can't be tamed
She's a calico pony on an open plain
I know I'll never be the same no more, for sure

    She's a Wild Child
Got a rebel soul with a whole lot of gypsy wild style
She can't be tied down but for a while
I'll be falling free and so in love
Might break my heart but God she drives me wild child

You've never heard of her favorite band unless you
Been to Bonnaroo or Burning Man
She's Penny Lane in a Chevy van, she loves to love

    She loves me wild child
Got a rebel soul with a whole lot of gypsy wild style
She can't be tied down but for a while
I'll be falling free and so in love
Might break my heart but God she drives me wild child

She'll be here until she runs
Some just have to chase the sun

    She's a wild child
Got a rebel soul with a whole lot of gypsy wild style
She can't be tied down but for a while
I'll be falling free and so in love
Might break my heart but God she drives me wild child

A kaleidoscope of colors in her mind child
A touch of crazy hides behind her wild smile
    So simple yet experimental
Innocent but still a little wild child

    Wild child

  • This song finds Chesney stepping away from the standard bro-country lyrical content that features girls as eye-fodder attired in barely-there clothes. "In the last several years, a lot of the songs about women have been written in kind of an objectifying way," he told Radio.com . "If you didn't wear cut-off jeans or a bikini top, or sit on a tailgate and drink, then you really weren't worthy, you didn't really add up."

"But 'Wild Child' is telling some girl out there that's got dreams, that's a free spirit," Chesney continued, "who's smart and interesting, that she has a chance, that she is worthy."
  • Chesney recruited Grace Potter to sing with him on this tune. The Nocturnals frontwoman previously collaborated with the country star on "You and Tequila" and "El Cerrito Place."

Chesney told Taste of Country he is astounded that his voice blends with Grace Potter's so perfectly. "It's weird that they do," the country star said. "She grew up in Vermont and I grew up in east Tennessee, and I never met Grace until we went into the studio to sing 'You and Tequila' together. And we both just kind of looked at each other and went, 'Where have you been all of our lives?'"
  • The song's music video was directed by Chesney's regular visual collaborator, Shaun Silva. The clip follows Chesney's free-spirited friend, songwriter Gretchen Rhodes, enjoying life on her home island of Hawaii. "Shaun really captured everything that makes Robin-and every woman just like her-and I know people get their music in so many different places," Chesney said.

"It is a song about any woman so hungry to engage life, she spends her days trying to taste it all," he added. "You don't have to be a gypsy to be a free spirit, but just someone so in love with life, you will never get enough. To see a woman like that is a pretty amazing thing."
  • The song was written by Kenny Chesney with Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally during a writing trip to the US Virgin Island of St. John. Osborne recalled to Taste of Country how Chesney proposed the song during the flight. "Kenny mentioned he wanted to write a song called 'Wild Child' that he thought would be this awesome idea of writing a different way about women. More about their spirit, not just how they look," he recalled.

The trio got the ball rolling on the song during the second morning of their trip. "I had my guitar and started messing with those chord changes, just trying to give it something interesting," Osborne continued. "We were just trying to color up the music a little bit, and Shane kinda fell onto that rhyming pattern of 'Wild child, got a rebel soul with a whole lot of gypsy. Wild style,' changing that second word so much and making 'wild' a big lyrical part of that. So we had kinda worked on that chorus for a half hour, hour or something like that, and had some pieces of it, and then went over."

"We played him what we had, and he loved it, and just jumped right in with both feet," he added. "He's a really, really good songwriter. He jumped right in and was really coloring up those verses, and the second he started singing the chorus, it just instantly sounded like a Kenny Chesney song. And then we thought, 'This might be something special.'"

"He recorded the song probably a week later. It was awesome," Osborne concluded. "We got to go into the studio for that and watch his process with Buddy Cannon. It was really a cool moment."

    Billion Dollar Babies Lyrics

    Billion dollar baby
Rubber little lady, slicker than a weasel
    Grimy as an alley
Loves me like no other lover
    Billion dollar baby
Rubber little monster, baby, I adore you
Man or woman living couldn't love me like you, baby

We go dancing nightly in the attic
While the moon is rising in the sky
If I'm too rough, tell me
I'm so scared your little head will come off in my hands

    Billion dollar baby
I got you in the dime store
No other little girl could ever hold you
Any tighter, any tighter than me, bay
    Billion dollar baby
Reckless like a gambler, million dollar maybe
Foaming like a dog that's been infected by the rabies

We go dancing nightly in the attic
While the moon is rising the sky
If I'm too rough, tell me
I'm so scared your little head will come off in my hands
    Million dollar baby
    Billion dollar bay
    Trillion dollar baby
    Zillion dollar baby

    Billion Dollar Babies Song Chart
  • This song is about the dangers of overindulgence. It came just as Cooper was getting famous and exposed to rock star excess, and accordingly it helped make him rich and famous. Alice used the cash to buy a house in Los Angeles and finance more elaborate stage shows and videos. He lived the rock star lifestyle for a while, but in later years settled into a very sensible upper class lifestyle, living in Arizona, playing lots of golf, and making shrewd business decisions. He never became a billionaire, but he did very well for himself.
  • Cooper and his band recorded this at a mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut, which is a very wealthy suburb of New York City. They rented it out to record the album. The song is credited as written by Cooper, his guitarist Michael Bruce, and a session guitarist they worked with named Reggie Vinson.
  • The Billion Dollar Babies album was re-released with new packaging as a DVD in 2000. It contains all the songs plus interviews and bonus tracks.
  • As part of his stage show, Cooper would mutilate dolls when he performed this song. The tour for the album introduced the props Cooper became famous for, including the guillotine, the snake, and hundreds of cans of beer.
  • This song took on new meaning when Cooper started playing at casinos in the '90s.
  • 1973 was the last year that Alice Cooper was recognized as a group, rather than just the lead singer. Since the singer, Vincent Furnier, drew most of the attention, many fans did not know the difference between him and the Alice Cooper Band. Muscle of Love was the last album as the group.

As lead singer Vincent Furnier became the known as Alice Cooper and sucked up all the notoriety the band received, the guitarist, bass player, and drummer from The Alice Cooper Band left and formed a group called The Billion Dollar Babies. They released an album called Battle Axe in 1977.
  • The background vocals were sung by Donovan of "Mellow Yellow" fame. According to Mojo magazine, Donovan was recording at Willesden's Morgan Studios around the same time as Alice and then got roped in on the latter's session.
  • Notwithstanding the sometimes grotesque subject matter, Cooper told Gibson.com that one of his main inspirations for the album was Chuck Berry. "[Berry] was my favorite lyricist," said Cooper. "When I first heard something like 'Nadine,' or 'Maybelline,' I understood those songs told a story. As the lyrics went along, you really got a picture of what was going on. He took the girl out; he couldn't get his seat belt off - things like that. I always wanted to write three-minute stories that were funny, or maybe not just funny, but also dramatic. The idea was to compact everything into three minutes, which is really hard to do."
