Hey Baby Lyrics

Hey Baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say,boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey
Hey baby baby
I'm the kinda girl that hangs with the guys
Like a fly on the wall with my secret eyes
Taking it in, try to be feminine
With my makeup bag watching all the sin
Misfit, I sit, lit up, wicked
Everybody else surrounded by the girls
With the tank tops and the flirty ways

I'm just sipping on chamomile
Watching boys and girls and their sex appeal
With a stranger in the face who says he knows my mom
And went to my high school

[Chorus]
All the boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Hey baby baby
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
All the boys get the girls in the back

I'm the one they feed upon
Give a bit a star is born
And if you had enough you'll get the pass
And you can tell your friends how you made it back
No matter what they say I'm still the same
Somehow everybody knows my name
And all the girls want to get with the boys
And the boys really like it

[Chorus]

[Bounty Killer]
Check it out, it's Bounty Killer, and no doubt
Jump on the stage makes me going crazy
After wards myself and one of them gorgeous ladies(that's right)
There is no need to be acting shady
Come on baby, hey hey baby
Jump on the stage makes me going crazy
After wards myself and one of them gorgeous ladies(yea man)
There is no need to be acting shady
Come on baby, hey hey baby
When you rock your hips you know that it amaze me
Got me off the hook and nothing else don't phase me
Can you be my one and only sunshine lady
If no, no maybe, hey

[Gwen]
I'm just sipping on chamomile
Watching boys and girls and their sex appeal
With a stranger in the face who says he knows my mom
And went to my high school
(hey baby, hey baby)(that's right)

All the boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Hey baby baby (hey baby)
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Can you be my one and only sunshine lady
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
When you rock your hips you know that it amaze me
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
All the boys get the girls in the back

  • This song is about groupies who try very hard to get some time with the male members of No Doubt. Lead singer Gwen Stefani says these ladies are much worse than the male fans who like her. As the only girl in the group, she sees what happens backstage as her bandmates entertain their female fans.
  • Jamaican reggae artist Bounty Killer does the rap on this song and is in the video. In Jamaica, rappers are known as "toasters," as rap began there when DJs spoke over records, which they called "toasting."
  • Reggae musicians Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (Sly and Robbie) produced this. They were session musicians for years, providing reggae rhythms for Bob Dylan, Grace Slick, and The Rolling Stones, among others.
  • This was the first single from the album. It was released 15 months after their last one, Return Of Saturn, which was released five years after Tragic Kingdom.
  • At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, this won for Best Pop Video and Best Group Video.
  • This won the 2002 Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance By A Duo Or Group. No Doubt performed on the show before they won - they had the unenviable task of going on after Simon and Garfunkel reunited to perform a moving rendition of their classic "The Sound Of Silence."

Both acts were introduced by actor Dustin Hoffman, and while Hoffman was quite familiar with Simon and Garfunkel (he starred in The Graduate, which they contributed to), he apparently knew little about No Doubt. When he introduced them, he said that his daughter had coached him on their music and sort of sang a little of this, except he sang "Say Baby" instead of "Hey Baby." Hoffman is clearly more comfortable at the Oscars, he also called Bruce Springsteen "Bruce Springstreet."
  • Backwards, the line "Boys Say" sounds like "Yes Sir." (thanks, Conrad - Los Angeles, CA)

    Uh, feel my heart beating
    Uh, feel my heart beating
    Uh, feel my heart beating

Ah, daddy has flown to paradise
    He was on dialysis
    Life was harder than calluses
Needed a drug, so I'm smoking on cannabis
    Loving them bitches you tappin'
Were probably the same bitches you and your man done hit
Bari told me that she was a ho
That pussy, I couldn't abandon it
I was on drugs, we high
    On the Summer Jam stage
Eating off a cloud, high off the haze
Feel like I was floating for about a hundred days
Now I'm texting a couple bitches hoping I'm getting laid
Couple of bird bitches up in the
Ain't fucking text back, oh, now I'm feeling played, oh damn
Yams said "Ferg, you don't look good"
'Cause I'm high, I'm so high
    Time has flown by
    My eyes, they don't lie
Where the fuck is Lou? I'm trying to be polite
I think he laced me, I'm a chuck him like bowtie
    Oh, he shall die
Or Percy probably gave me a coke high
Coke in a blunt, nigga, what a surprise

Oh, lots of thoughts running through my brains
Don't want to be caught like Kurt Cobain
My mind's a Porsche, switching lanes
All of a sudden I'm feeling all of this guilt and pain
Kids is dying from drugs they buying
Popping a molly, get feeling like Iron Man
Shit is like lighting a fire inside of them
Fuck is you thinking kids trying to get higher than?
Higher than Mars, killing ourselves cause we live in a fucked up environment
Dreams of becoming doctors and firemen
Shouldn't give in to this early retirement

"Took this to Los Angeles (set up at Fleas the Boat studio in Silver Lake) collaborating further with Stella (drums) and Emily (vocals) from Warpaint – took this back to London to work more arrangement ideas to it and finally a couple months later took that to New York (Downtown – The Roots were in the studio next door!) and collaborated with Ferg ([shout] to our friend Callender for connecting us)."

Feeling down n' dirty, feeling kinda mean
I've been from one to another extreme
This time I had a good time, ain't got time to wait
I want to stick around till I can't see straight

Fill my eyes with that double vision, no disguise for that double vision
Ooh, when it gets through to me, it's always new to me
My double vision gets the best of me

Never do more than I really need
My mind is racing, but my body's in the lead
Tonight's the night, I'm gonna push it to the limit
I live all of my years in a single minute

Fill my eyes with that double vision, no disguise for that double vision
Ooh, when it gets through to me, it's always new to me
My double vision always seems to get the best of me, the best of me, yeah

Ooh, double vision, I need my double vision
It takes me out of my head, takin' me out of my head
I get my double vision, oh, seeing double double
Oh, I have double vision, (oh double vision) yeah

    Battleground Lyrics

One more shot across the bow
One more bullet through the heart
You've got me bleeding on the ground
I got you wounded in the dark
Why do we always, take this way too far

Surrender tonight this time save tomorrow
Mama don't you let me down
    This broken alliance
    Leaves me so hollow
    And wondering how

Did the bed that we made
    Become our Battleground

When the damage has been done
I know you hurt so don't pretend
Where we're used to making love
    Now we're making war instead
    Before it's too late
Lay your arms down let me in

Surrender tonight this time save tomorrow
Mama don't you let me down
    This broken alliance
    Leaves me so hollow
    And wondering ho

Did the bed that we made
    Become our battleground

Just hold your fire long enough to see
This ain't how it's supposed to be

Once all that we've got is lost
    The walls will fall
Please don't let them fall on me

    Oh

    I wanna lay you down
Surrender all the sorrow, the sorrow
    Wanna lay you down
    Surrender till it's gone

    I wanna lay you down
    Surrender till tomorrow, tomorrow
    Wanna lay you down
    Surrender till it's gone
    Yeah

    Just surrender till it's gone
    Just surrender till it's gone

I don't wanna fight no more
Say, I can feel it all there
I wanna tell right just then and there oh
    Say yeah
    Say yeah

I don't wanna fight this battle anymore.

  • World On Fire is the second studio album featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators. The record was produced by Michael "Elvis" Baskette, who also helmed Alter Bridge's Blackbird, AB III and Fortress long players. Myles Kennedy told Blabbermouth why he was pleased to hook up with producer again: "His ability to get the best out of a rock band is pretty special," he said. "He always seems to be aware of what the fans want to hear from an artist."

"He did a great job documenting Slash's tone and sound," Kennedy continued. "I remember the first time I heard the solo for 'Battleground' — I was blown away. Elvis captured the sonic hallmarks that made Slash's playing resonate with me 25 years ago. Elvis is hands-on with every element of the recording process. From the arrangements to the final mix, he is relentless at making sure that the record is everything it should be and more."

    Itchycoo Park Lyrics

    Over bridge of sighs
To rest my eyes in shades of green

    Under dreaming spires
To Itchycoo Park, that's where I've been

(What did you do there?) I got high
(What did you feel there?) well, I cried
(But why the tears there?) tell you why
It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun

I'll tell you what I'll do (what will you do?) I'd like to go there now with you
You can miss out school (won't that be cool?) why go to learn the words of fools?

(What will we do there?) we'll get high
(What will we touch there?) we'll touch the sky
(But why the tears there?) I'll tell you why
It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun
It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful
    It's all too beautiful, hah

    Itchycoo Park Song Chart
  • Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane of Small Faces wrote this song, which is about skipping school to hang out at a park. Of course, with the lyrics, "What did you do there? I got high," it was fairly obvious that they were doing in the park, although the band denied that it was about drugs, kind of like John Lennon did with "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," which was released the same year. Marriott told Creem in 1975: "The thing about 'Itchycoo Park' was that the era was wrong, and the word 'high' freaked everybody out. All the radio stations. But that song was real. Ronnie Lane and I used to go to a park called Itchycoo Park. I swear to God. We used to bunk off school and groove there. We got high, but we didn't smoke. We just got high from not going to school."
  • "Itchycoo Park" is the nickname of Little Ilford Park in London. An "Itchycoo" is slang for a flower found in the park called a "Stinging Nettle," which can burn the skin if touched. Said Lane: "It's a place we used to go to in Ilford years ago. Some bloke we know suggested it to us because it's full of nettles and you keep scratching."
  • This was the biggest American hit Small Faces ever had (they were much more popular in England), but according to Ronnie Lane, they considered it a joke when they recorded it; the band would screw around in the studio to get a laugh out of their manager Andrew Oldham. The song came out sounding so good that they started to take it seriously.
  • Regarding the origins of this song, Ronnie Lane explained in a 1991 interview with Record Hunter: "'Itchycoo Park' basically came from me. I lifted it from a hymn, 'God Be In My Head,' and I also got the theme to the words in a hotel in Bath or Bristol. There was a magazine in the room with a rambling account of some place in the country and it was about 'dreaming spires' and a 'bridge of sighs' – there was a write-up on this town – and I just thought they were nice lines."
  • This song features one of the first uses of phase-shifting production, which you can hear when the vocals and drums become distorted in the song. The technique was called comb filtering, which could later be created using a processor, but at the time required three tape machines - two of them playing the same thing at different frequencies and the third one recording it. According to Glyn Johns, who engineered the sessions, it was a staff producer at Olympic Studios named George Chkiantz who came up with the effect, and Johns was looking for a place to use it. The Faces were always looking for new sounds and encouraged Johns to use the technique on this song.

Keyboardist Ian McLagan recalled to Uncut magazine: "We tried to replicate the phasing effect when we played it live. It was hopeless."
  • In the UK, this became a hit for the second time when it was rereleased in 1975, going to #9. A cover my M People made #11 in the UK in 1995.
  • On its release, the BBC immediately banned the song because of overt drug references - "What did you do there? - I got high" and "I feel inclined to blow my mind, get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun, They all come out to groove about, Be nice and have fun in the sun."

So Small Faces manager Tony Calder explained the song had an innocent interpretation. In Marriott's biography, All Too Beautiful, by Paolo Hewitt and John Hellier, Calder says: "We told the BBC Itchycoo Park was waste ground in the East End which the band had played on as kids. We put the story out at ten and by lunchtime we were told the ban was off."
  • McLagan (from Uncut magazine): "I never liked 'Itchycoo Park' because me and Ronnie had to sing, 'It's all too beautiful,' and you sing that a few times, and you think... It's not."

"But years after that I'd finally, properly, checked out the words, and realised it was about education and privilege," he added. "The 'bridge of sighs' is the one in Cambridge. The 'dreaming spires' are a reference to Oxford. Then 'to Itchycoo Park... That's where I've been,' Ronnie was saying, 'I didn't need privilege or education. Found beauty in a nettle patch in the East End of London."

    The Negative One Lyrics

Fire and caffeine, a lot of nicotine
I'm on a burn, so I better tell you everything
    The competition, the superstition
Nevermind 'cause you're never gonna give in
If acquired and that's how you like it
The same trouble in a different disguise
Bound to walk with a target on my back
At least I'm ready for another attack

    The Lord of lies
    The morning star
You had to be set free
    Opposing sides
    Your choices are
    The Negative One and me

    Svengali, wail with the enemies
I never follow and I never make apologies
Your divisions, are gonna get ya
Because you won't disappoint each other
Center for the cynical, you're so political
You're getting ready 'cause the first move is critical
    Reciprocity, somebody's listening
Until we learn from our time we can never die

    The Lord of lies
    The morning star
You had to be set free
    Opposing sides
    Your choices are
    The negative one and me
    The negative one and me

    I hope you live
    To see the day
When your world comes up in flames
    And as you die
    You see my face
You're the only one to blame, yeah
    Fuck

    The Prescient, the Nascent
The quotient (They all will fall)
    The Cystic, symbolic, condition (Systemic)
    Egregious, replete with
    These lesions (Contaminate)
    Succumb to the selfish
    Creation (Your failure)

    Know I got ability, divisibility
I point a finger but it's always looking back at me
The centerpiece pulling on the mechanism
    Unearthing skies of the cataclysm
When the innocent begin to circumvent
The color fades, but the picture is vibrant
What do you believe, doesn't matter now
Turn away, the killer is that of now

    The Lord of lies
    The morning star
You had to be set free
    Opposing sides
    Your choices are
    The negative one and me

    I hope you live
    To see the day
When your world comes up in flames

  • The first song to be released by Slipknot, following the death of bassist Paul Gray in 2010 and the departure of drummer Joey Jordison in 2013, this finds Corey Taylor shouting/screaming:

    The Lord of Lies
You had to be set free
    Opposing sides
Your choices are the negative one and me
    .

It has been speculated that the lyrics are about Jordison, who was assigned "1" as his numbered alias shortly after Slipknot's formation. Speaking to Metal Hammer, Corey Taylor put the argument to rest, denying Jordison was the singer's muse for the song. "'The Negative One' was about me, not about Joey, and that's why the song says, 'Your choices are the negative one and me,' which is the two kind of colliding together," he said. "'The Devil In I' is the same, which you'd think would be f---ing apparent."

"We all have so many different sides to ourselves, but especially with this band," Taylor added. "When we get together, there's something about the music we make that really unleashes the crazy, dark s--t inside of us. And that song in particular is about, basically, embracing it again, giving into it and letting it have its say. Because if you don't, then you sit on it and you repress and it blows up in really negative ways. So, that song is about freeing it."
  • The song's music video was directed by percussionist Shawn Crahan with Darren Craig (Rihanna's "What Now"). Crahan has helmed most of Slipknot's music videos and concert documentaries.
  • Taylor told Rolling Stone says the song is about himself coming to terms with the loss of Paul Gray, which left him with a feeling of powerlessness. "It's about, 'Why didn't I think of something?'" he said. "'Why didn't I do something? Why didn't I try to be a better friend, to be a better brother?' You'll keep yourself awake nights thinking that s--t. You have to turn on yourself and go, 'You can mourn this person. You can keep this person in your heart, but life is life. It's just something that you can't control.'"

    I Shot The Sheriff Lyrics

I Shot The Sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy

All around in my home town
They're trying to track me down
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy
For the life of a deputy, but I say

I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense
I shot the sheriff, and they say it is a capital offense

Sheriff John Brown always hated me
    For what I don't know
Every time that I plant a seed
He said, "Kill it before it grows"
He said, "Kill it before it grows", I say

I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense
I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defense

Freedom came my way one day
And I started out of town
All of a sudden I see sheriff John Brown
    Aiming to shoot me down
So I shot, I shot him down, I say

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy
I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy

Reflexes got the better of me
And what is to be must be
Every day the bucket goes to the well
But one day the bottom will drop out
Yes, one day the bottom will drop out, but I say

I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy, oh no

  • This was written and originally recorded by Bob Marley in 1973. A member of Clapton's band played the Bob Marley album for him and convinced him to record it.
  • This is Clapton's only #1 hit. He came close in 1992 with "Tears In Heaven," which reached #2.
  • Clapton didn't want to use this on the album because he thought it might seem disrespectful to Marley. Members of his band and management convinced him that it should not only go on the album, but also be released as a single.

  • Sukierae is the debut album by Tweedy, a side project formed by Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer. The record was titled after Jeff Tweedy's wife and Spencer's mother Sue "Sukie" Miller, whose fight with cancer during its recording influenced the lyrical content. Jeff Tweedy explained to Uncut magazine: "She called herself Sukie her whole life because ('60s teen idol) Peter Noone's little sister was Sukie Noone, and she was in love with Peter Noone when she was nine."
  • Although Sukierae was started before Sukie Miller's diagnosis of cancer, many of its songs describe scenes from a long love affair with a hint of melancholy. Jeff Tweedy sings here over an acoustic guitar:

Oh, I've always been certain nearly all of my life
One day I would be your burden, and you would be my wife

Tweedy told Uncut: "Well, she's definitely on my mind a lot, always, and especially while writing lyrics for this record. It was hard not to sing to her, and honor this thing that we've maintained, that's so hard to do."

    Bennie And The Jets Lyrics

Hey kids, shake it loose together
    The spotlight's hitting something
That's been known to change the weather
We'll kill the fatted calf tonight
    So stick around
    You're gonna hear electric music
    Solid walls of sound

Say, Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet
But they're so spaced out, Bennie And The Jets
Oh but they're weird and they're wonderful
    Oh Bennie she's really keen
She's got electric boots a mohair suit
You know I read it in a magazine
    Bennie and the Jets

Hey kids, plug into the faithless
    Maybe they're blinded
    But Bennie makes them ageless
We shall survive, let us take ourselves along
Where we fight our parents out in the streets
To find who's right and who's wrong

Oh Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet
Oh but they're so spaced out, Bennie and the Jets
Oh but they're weird and they're wonderful
    Oh Bennie she's really keen
She's got electric boots a mohair suit
You know I read it in a magazine, oh
    Bennie and the Jets

Oh Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet
Oh but they're so spaced out, Bennie and the Jets
Oh but they're weird and they're wonderful

Bennie And The Jets Song Chart
  • Elton wrote the music to this song as an homage to glam rock, a style defined by outrageous costumes that was popular in the early '70s, especially in the UK. Artists like David Bowie and Gary Glitter got into the act, but for Elton, it was an extension of his personality - he really was gay and liked to wear feminine clothes on stage. He became known for his wild appearance and collection of gaudy sunglasses.
  • "Bennie" is a female character who Elton has described as a "sci-fi rock goddess." Bernie Taupin, who wrote the lyrics, told Esquire, "'Bennie And The Jets' was almost Orwellian - it was supposed to be futuristic. They were supposed to be a prototypical female rock 'n' roll band out of science fiction. Automatons."
  • It was Elton's idea to stutter the vocal: "B-B-B-Bennie..." Bernie Taupin thought this worked very well with the futuristic, robotic theme of his lyrics. Said Taupin: "That's a little quirk of the song which I'm sad to say I had nothing to do with. That and that wonderful big chord at the beginning. I think those two things are what probably made that song so popular. Neither of which I had anything to do with."
  • Comic books, movies, and the German photographer Helmut Newton were some of the influences Bernie Taupin threw into the pot when writing the lyrics to this song. Said Taupin: "I'd always had this wacky science fiction idea about a futuristic rock and roll band of androids fronted by some androgynous kind of Helmut Newton style beauty, which was depicted to little great effect on the Yellow Brick Road album cover. I'm not sure if it came to me in a dream or was some way the subconscious of effect of watching Kubrick on drugs. Either way, it was definitely something that was totally formed as a concept, and something that could have morphed into any number of populist items. Could have been comic books or movies. In fact, I can't help but believe that that Robert Palmer video with all the identical models somehow paid a little lip service to The Jets."

This was also a hit on the US R&B charts, known at the time as the "Black" charts. Elton was especially proud of this, as he was influenced by many black musicians.
  • Elton did not think this would be a hit. He was shocked when it went to #1 in America. John claims he rarely knows which of his songs will be hits.
  • The falsetto vocal is Elton trying to sound like Frankie Valli . He was a fan of Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons growing up, and went to at least one of their concerts when he was young.
  • Elton's producer Gus Dudgeon wanted a live feel on this recording, so he mixed in crowd noise from a show Elton played in 1972 at Royal Festival Hall. He also included a series of whistles from a live concert in Vancouver B.C., and added hand claps and various shouts. (thanks, Graham - White Rock, BC)
  • Elton tried to record the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album in Jamaica, since The Rolling Stones had just recorded their Goats Head Soup album in a studio there and encouraged him to try it. Instead of the relaxing tropical paradise they expected, Elton and his crew encountered hostile locals and faulty equipment. They ended up recording the album at the studio in France (The Chateau) where they recorded their two previous albums.
  • Bernie Taupin says that when he saw the Robert Palmer video for "Addicted To Love," it portrayed when he envisioned Bennie And The Jets looking like: a dapper frontman backed by robotic models.
  • This wasn't released as a single in the UK, where it was released as the B-side of "Candle In The Wind." In the US, "Candle In The Wind" was not released as a single because MCA records thought this was better. Elton protested, but came around when black radio stations started playing it and it became a hit.
  • Elton performed this on Soul Train, becoming one of the few white performers ever to play the show (David Bowie is another). Elton asked to appear on the show, as he was a big fan. He explained on the program that he and his band would often watch it while they were on tour.
  • This was featured in the movie My Girl 2. Its played when Vada and Nick are exploring Los Angeles. (thanks, Melissa - Newcastle, Australia)
  • On Elton John's "Red Piano" tour (2007-2009), he would open with this song. He had old neon casino signs that spelled out ELTON. During the opening da da dada da notes, the lights would go on with each note. (thanks, Breanna - Henderson, NV)
  • Elton performed this song when he appeared on The Muppet Show in 1977, with a group of Muppets singing along with him at the piano. Elton's outlandish costumes were a running joke during the episode, and at one point Sam The Eagle was coerced into dressing like Elton.
  • In 1999, Mary J. Blige reworked this into a song called "Deep Inside." Elton played piano on the track.

    Nobody Dies Anymore Lyrics

Sitting in a combed out room
    Watching the world to end
    I won't say golden
Until you let me back in

    Nobody says goodbye
    But everybody goes home
    We end the day sober
To a depth we don't own

    I stand where I grew
    Oh, I hated that too
When hell's about to blow in
    I saddle up new

    And it won't be long
To find a broken back bone
    Or another ocean
    Are there any unknown

    So I dance my shoe
    Beneath the black balloon
Flip it at you for your trouble
    So long, so soon
    I'm going to

    Nobody Dies Anymore
But don't you think it's never over
    Nobody dies anymore
No badge knock on a dark front door
    Some things still change
    But
    Nobody dies
    Nobody dies
    Nobody dies

Don't I look over my sister
Sister don't you know me no more
She calls me once every summer
    Before the leafs turn gold

    When she was the daughter
    Of a world without end
They told her I was stolen
    She couldn't comprehend

    Poured out in the street
By the blood in the grass
    Poured out at the feet
    By the broken glass

    Nobody dies anymore
No badge knock on a dark front door
    Some things still change
    But
    Nobody dies
    Nobody dies
    Nobody dies

Love every song that I know
You ask me well how so
    Strange I can't defend
I love how every song ends

  • This is a track from Sukierae, the debut album by Tweedy, a side project formed by Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer. This song finds him reflecting on the ongoing troubles in his home city. "Chicago has a horrible problem with gun violence, and it was an attempt to write about that," he told Uncut magazine. "It still has images of candlelight vigils on crappy, low-income street-corners, with beer being poured out on the street."
  • Sukierae is titled after Jeff Tweedy's wife and Spencer's mother Sue "Sukie" Miller, whose fight with cancer during its recording influenced the lyrical content. Jeff Tweedy told Uncut: "That was written way before anything happened with my wife's cancer diagnosis. And one of the ways that we discovered the malignancy in my wife's bones is that she had a broken backbone, a collapsed vertebrae. And now when I sing that song, I think, 'Oh my God, that's so strange.'"

    I Wish You Would Lyrics

Early in the morning, 'bout the break of day,
That's when my baby went away.
Come back, baby, I Wish You Would,
Try and love me, you won't do no good.

    Walking and a-kissing late at night;
I tell you now baby, I feel just right.
Come now baby, whatcha trying to do?
Trying to love me and some other man, too.

Come now baby, give me one more chance.
You know I still love you, want to give you romance.
Yeah romance, all night long, in my arms, woah yeah.

Early in the morning, 'bout the break of day,
That's when my baby went away.
Come back, baby, I wish you would,
Try and love me, you won't do no good.

You know baby that I love you so.
You know, pretty baby, it hurts me to see you go.
    Oh yeah, oh yeah.

  • Lead singer Keith Relf's voice was drowned in echo. The Yardbirds were known for experimenting with distortion and various other effects in their quest for the right sound. This led to an updated Blues sound that Jimmy Page would later use with Led Zeppelin. Page was with The Yardbirds from 1966-1968.
  • On most US pressings, this was mistitled "I Wish You Could."
  • There is an alternate take on the British album Remember the Yardbirds.
  • This was the Yardbirds' first single. It didn't chart because R&B was not popular at the time. The Yardbirds learned this when they finally hit it big with a Pop song, "For Your Love."
  • This was a cover of Billy Boy Arnold's 1955 hit, which is reputed to be the first blues song to feature electric bass.

    Cedarwood Road Lyrics

I was running down the road
The fear was all I knew
I was looking for a soul that’s real
    Then I ran into you
    And that cherry blossom tree
Was a gateway to the sun
    And friendship, once it’s won
    It’s won, it’s one

    Northside
Just across the river to the Southside
    That’s a long way here

All the green and all the gold
    The hurt you hide
    The joy you hold
    The foolish pride
That gets you out the door
    Up on Cedarwood, Cedarwood Road

    Sleepwalking down the road
And not waking from these dreams
    ‘Cause it’s never dead
    It’s still my head
It was a war zone in my teens
I’m still standing on that street
    Still need an enemy
The worst ones I can’t see
    You can, you can

    Northside
Just across the river from the Southside
    That’s a long way here

All the green and all the gold
    The hurt you hide
    And the joy you hold
    The foolish pride
That sends you back for more
    Up on Cedarwood, Cedarwood Road

If the door is open it isn't theft
You can’t return to where you've never left
    Blossoms falling from a tree
They cover you and cover me
    Symbols clashing, bibles smashing
Paint the world you need to see
And sometimes fear is the only place
That we can call our home
    Cedarwood Road

And a heart that is broken
Is a heart that is open
    Open, open

  • Not all the streets have no name - the title of this song refers to 10 Cedarwood Road in Dublin, where a young Paul 'Bono' Hewson grew up alongside his friends Guggi Rowan and Gavin Friday. It is located in the Ballymun district on the northern outskirts of the Irish city. (The track is dedicated to Rowan).
  • The song started with guitar riff that Edge wrote at home. He put the track together using Garage Band software with drum loops that Larry Mullen Jr. made for him.
  • Bono wrote the lyrics to match the tone of the track Edge put together. "Sometimes I write lyrics and we try to find the music to express those lyrics," he told the Song Exploder podcast. "But most of the time, it's about finding a feeling at first, and then trying to express that feeling. Edge had this big blues riff - powerful and full of rage. It was a natural fit for me to talk about my own rage."
