Pass The Courvoisier Part II Lyrics

Pass The Courvoisier Part II Song Chart
  • This is a remix of the original "Pass The Courvoisier," which appears on Busta's 2001 album Genesis. In 2002, he reworked the song into a monster jam featuring P. Diddy, who raps with him on the track, and Pharrell Williams, who sings the "looks like them asses is swollen" hook. Williams produced the song with his Neptunes partner Chad Hugo. This new version was released as a single and featured on the soundtracks to the movies Love Don't Cost a Thing (2003) and Taxi (2004).
  • Here's a breakdown of the samples used in "Pass The Courvoisier Part II":

"Scenario" by A Tribe Called Quest. Busta performed on this 1992 song, which used various samples of its own, including "Give It Up" by Kool & the Gang and "Little Miss Lover" by Jimi Hendrix.

"Shake Ya Ass" by Mystikal. This one was also written and produced by The Neptunes and features Pharrell on vocals.

"Easy Come, Easy Go" by Odyssey. This 1977 song was by a New York Disco group who had their biggest hit with "Native New Yorker" that same year. The song was written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, who wrote some hits for The Four Seasons. Providing some insight on how all these samples were cleared, Randell told us : "We worked it out with Warner Brothers at that time - they were licensed to use what they wanted to made their record."

"Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang. The part used sampled the famous bassline created by Bernard Edwards in "Good Times" by Chic, which he wrote with Nile Rodgers.

A total of 16 writers are credited on this track: Busta, Diddy, The Neptunes, and the composers of all the sampled material.
  • Courvoisier is an expensive French cognac. Typically considered an after dinner drink, it has grown in popularity and is often consumed at parties and mixed with other beverages. Some companies, like Motorola, paid to have their products mentioned in rap songs, but Courvoisier did not pay for this. Sales of Courvoisier surged after the song came out, increasing 20% over the previous year. In the advertising world, Puffy and Busta are known as "key influencers," meaning that if they use a product, others are likely to follow. Barbara Jackson, who was vice-president of marketing at the company that makes the beverage, said: "As a marketer, you're thrilled. You can't buy this. Well, you could, but it's more credible when you don't have to."

While there was no official deal with Courvoisier, the company did sponsor some lavish parties after some of Busta's concerts to show their support.
  • A few years before this came out, Courvoisier tried to expand their market by advertising to the urban community. They took out ads in black magazines and sponsored R&B concerts in an effort to shed their image as a beverage consumed by stuffy old white guys after dinner at the country club. The campaign worked very well.

Marketing to the hip-hop community became a very big deal for luxury beverage companies. In 2010, Hennessy launched Hennessy Black by commissioning a Swizz Beatz theme song for the drink called "When I Step Into the Club." Thanks to the rap community, cognac (or "the yak") sales bumped up about 37% from 2001-2007 before dropping in 2008 because of the recession. Companies who did not embrace this audience faced a backlash: When a Cristal executive answered a question about rappers mentioning the brand by saying, "What can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it," Jay-Z declared the company racist and pulled Cristal from his 40/40 sports bars.
  • Hennessy, a rival cognac brand, has also been mentioned in many rap songs, but they have never been included in the title of a hit song.
  • Mr. T has a prominent role in the video, including a scene where the rappers admire his gold chains. There's also a break in the action about 1:20 into the clip where Busta and Mo'Nique recreate a scene from the 1989 movie Harlem Nights where Eddie Murphy gets in a fight with Della Reese and shoots her in the pinky toe. Later on, Jamie Foxx shows up for a reworking of a scene from the movie Rush Hour 2.
  • Busta Rhymes claims that he prefers Hennessy to Courvoisier, but Courvoisier fit the song better.
  • Courvoisier was featured in a popular Saturday Night Live skit called "The Ladies Man," which was later made into a movie. Tim Meadows' character sips it as he talks about how to score with the chicks.

If you know how to be my lover

Kiss me boy and drive me crazy

Be my, be my, be my

It's obvious I want to be into you
But it all depends on all the things you do
'Cause babe I promise, I promise
If you keep it real with me
    Be honest, be honest
You can get anything you want
    That you want babe
Just show me everything I need to see
    I'll give you anything boy

Honestly somehow it always seems that I'm dreaming of
    Something I could never be
It doesn't matter to me cause I will always be that pimp that I see in all
    Of my fantasies

I don't know your fucking name, so what let's
Screwing may be, the only way that I can truly be free
    From my fucked up reality
So I dream and stroke it harder cause it's so fun to see
My face staring back at me

I don't know your fucking name, so what let's fuck
All day I dream about sex
All day I dream about fuckin'
All day I dream about sex, yes

    A.D.I.D.A.S. Song Chart
  • The title of the song stands for "All Day I Dream About Sex." It has nothing to do with the sporting goods company, although it is a common misperception that this is what "Adidas" stands for. The company is named after it's founder, Adi Dassler.
  • A minor radio hit, this song helped Life is Peachy, Korn's second album, debut at #3 on the Billboard albums chart. "A.D.I.D.A.S." was also the band's first song to nick the Billboard Hot 100, bubbling under at #113 (Korn's popularity was never well-represented on these charts). All this led to an appearance on the 1997 Lollapalooza tour, which helped cement Korn's status as a group with mass appeal.
  • Korn's songs are band compositions, with lead signer Jonathan Davis writing the lyrics. On this song, he takes a self-deprecating look at his sexual prowess, pointing out that most of his action happens in his mind.
  • This features a brief appearance by lead singer Jonathan Davis' son Nathan, at the time a newborn. He can be heard going, "ehhhhh!"
  • While the song is not about the sportswear company, the band was often clad in Adidas gear. And while Run–D.M.C. parleyed their Adidas song into an endorsement deal, Korn seemed content to wear the stripes for free.

Their allegiance shifted, however, in 1998 when the band signed a six-figure deal to promote Puma, who was looking to make inroads with Korn's demographic: kids who swag out in athletic wear. Some fans saw this as selling out, with the band turning their back on Adidas, but there was very little blowback from the deal, and Korn made no secret that they were cashing in. As part of the deal, Puma used the Korn song "Freak on a Leash" in commercials. The Adidas/Puma rivalry goes way back: Puma was founded by Rudolf Dassler, the brother of Adidas founder Adi Dassler.

The Puma deal didn't last long: in 2001, Korn traded their felines for chevrons, signing a deal with Pony, which also had Staind and Limp Bizkit on their roster. Pony even made kilts and custom shoes for Davis to wear on stage.
  • The music video, directed by Joseph Kahn, opens with the aftermath of a car accident that killed all the band members. They're taken to the morgue where we find out that frontman Jonathan Davis wears women's underwear. Kahn started out directing rap videos and saw this video as a turning point in his career. He told Videostatic : "When I finally got a rock video like Korn, it was fun to take my slick hip hop sensibility and turn it loose on angry white guys. I guess it shocked people."

  • This was the first song released by Atreyu after a three-year hiatus. It was made available on their official website free of charge in exchange for signing up to the band's mailing list.
  • The song was inspired by one of vocalist Alex Varkatzas's best friends who used to serve in the armed forces. "The things our troops go through to protect us are pretty unreal," said the frontman. "Their treatment after leaves a lot to be desired, as well."

"The song honors them and condemns our government's constant deployment of these brave souls," Varkatzas continued. "The people who fight and die for us often come from a certain socio-economic background — the working class. The people making these decisions send our nation's children to war come from positions of privilege and wealth. Their kids aren't the ones getting deployed and they aren't risking their lives every day at work. Yet they order the working class to go 'keep us safe' at the drop of a hat, it feels like. It's bulls--t. It's the politicians and the rich of this country waging war to keep the majority preoccupied, so they can make money and advance their bulls–t political agendas. The expense is 'expendable' working class/poor Americans' lives, never the rich."

Papa Was A Rollin' Stone Lyrics

It was the third of September; that day I'll always remember,
'Cause that was the day that my daddy died.
I never got a chance to see him; never heard nothin' but bad things about him.
Mama I'm depending on you to tell me the truth.

Mama just looked at him and said, "Son,
    Papa Was A Rollin' Stone.
Wherever he laid his head was his home.
And when he died, all he left us was alone."

    Papa was a rollin' stone.
Wherever he laid his head was his home.
And when he died, all he left us was alone."

Hey, Mama, is it true what the say, that Papa never worked a day in his life?
And Mama, they talk all around town say that
Papa had three outside children and another wife
    And that ain't right.
Heard them talkin' about Papa doing some storefront preachin'
Talkin' about saving your souls and all the time weak, dealin' in death
And stealin' in the name of the Lord
Mama just hung her head and said,

    Papa was a rollin' stone.
Wherever he laid his head was his home.
And when he died, all he left us was alone."

    Papa was a rollin' stone.
Wherever he laid his head was his home.
And when he died, all he left us was alone."

Hey, Mama, I heard Papa call himself a jack of all trades.
Tell me, is that what sent Papa to an early grave?
Folks say Papa would beg; borrow or steal to pay his bills.
    Hey, Mama, folks say Papa was never much on thinkin';
Spend most of his time chasin' women and drinkin'!
Mama, I'm depending on you to tell me the truth.

Mama just hung her head and said, "Son,
    Papa was a rollin' stone.
Wherever he laid his head was his home.
And when he died, all he left us was alone."

    Papa was a rollin' stone.

Papa Was A Rollin' Stone Song Chart
  • This was written by the Motown songwriters Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield, and produced by Whitfield. It was first recorded by The Undisputed Truth, but Whitfield also had The Temptations record it, with much greater success.
  • A story that is often circulated and is recounted in the 2001 miniseries The Temptations deals with the lines of this song: "It was the 3rd of September, that day I'll always remember, 'cause that was the day that my daddy died."

The story goes that lead singer Dennis Edwards hated the song and was incensed when he heard this line, since his father died on that date and he thought Norman Whitfield put that in to goad him. This tale made for good drama, but was considerably overblown. Edwards' father actually died on October third, and he was anything but a rolling stone. The elder Edwards was a minister, and gave his son a good upbringing. Whitfield chose the date simply because it fit well in the song; he had no idea when Edwards' father had died.
  • The album version of this song runs 11:46. The single was released with the song split into two parts: the A-side was the "vocal" version and runs 6:58; the B-side is the "instrumental" and goes 4:49.

Even truncated for single release, the A-side was exceptionally long and remains one of the longest chart-toppers in Hot 100 history. It was not, however, the longest #1 of 1972 - that was Don McLean's "American Pie," which clocked in at 8:33.
  • Both sides of the single was Grammy awards. The A-side won for Best R&B Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus, and the B-side took the award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.
  • Speaking about this song's writer/producer Norman Whitfield in a 1995 interview with Goldmine, Motown head Berry Gordy said: "He could take one chord, like on 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone,' and play the same chord and do all these different beautiful melodies and stuff that many people could not really imagine this guy doin'. And I would watch him and he did it all by himself as a producer. He would work with five guys in the Temps and he would change leads on each one. He would pick the right lead for the right song, ya know, and he'd utilize all five of those leads in a song that was just incredible. When I listen to 'em today, now that I have time to listen to 'em, I'm saying, "Wow! This guy was probably the most underrated producer we had."
  • This was the last big hit recorded in Motown's famous Studio A, located in a two-story house in Detroit. Most of Motown's studio work had moved to Los Angeles by then, but The Temptations still recorded in Detroit.

  • The song originated from a King Creole loop, which Basement Jaxx's Felix Buxton had in his back pocket for a long time. He'd tried various people to provide vocals before eventually settling for Scottish rapper Patricia Panther.
  • Basement Jaxx's Simon Ratcliffe explained the song title to Edge of the Net : "It's a good summery vibe and it's always been called 'Summer Dem' because it felt like a summery track. When we came to think of a title for it, we thought let's leave it at that. 'Summer Dem' is its working title really."

You're running at a different speed
Your heart beats in double time
Another kiss and you'll be mine, a one track mind

    You can't be saved
    Oblivion is all you crave
If there's some left for you
You don't mind if you do

Whoa, you like to think that you're immune to the stuff, oh yeah

    Addicted To Love Song Chart
  • Palmer wanted this song to be a duet with Chaka Khan and recorded it with her. His label, Warner Brothers Records, would not allow her voice to be used on the record, so he had to erase her part and re-record her high notes before releasing it. Chaka Khan did appear on Steve Winwood's "Higher Love," which beat out this song for the 1987 Record of the Year Grammy.
  • The video featured Palmer singing in front of a "band" of beautiful women who looked exactly alike. They wore lots of make-up and identical clothing as they pretended to play the instruments. The video became an icon of the '80s, and is constantly parodied, including in a Pepsi commercial with Britney Spears.
  • Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin makes a pretty good case that the models in the video were influenced by the song "Bennie And The Jets," where he wrote about a futuristic rock band of androgynous beauties. Said Taupin: "I can't help but believe that that Robert Palmer video with all the identical models somehow paid a little lip service to The Jets."
  • The funny thing about the video was that the models posing as a band were selected precisely because they did NOT know how to play the instruments. As a result, each girl was keeping her own time and moving to a different beat.

One of the girls in the video was "bassist" Mak Gilchrist. She recalled to Q magazine June 2009: "I was 21 and got the part on the strength of my modeling book. We were meant to look and 'act' like showroom mannequins. Director Terence Donovan got us tipsy on a bottle of wine but as were having our make-up retouched, I lost balance on my heels and knocked the top of my guitar into the back of Robert's head, and his face then hit the microphone." Gilchrist added: "I remember feeling an acute sense of embarrassment when I first saw how sexy the video was. The most unusual place I saw it was on a huge screen on the side of a Tokyo building."
  • The girls in the video were not Palmer's idea. They were filmed separately and edited behind clips of Palmer singing.
  • The "love is an addiction" theme is a common lyrical trope, also successfully used the 1983 Huey Lewis & the News hit "I Want A New Drug." Palmer, who died of a heart attack in 2003 at age 54, said that he wrote the song about what it's like having an addictive personality.
  • The "keyboardist" in the video was Susie Verrico, who later appeared in the in the 2006 series of the UK reality TV show Big Brother.
  • Weird Al Yankovic recorded a parody of this called "Addicted to Spuds" on his album Polka Party!. (thanks, Steph - SoCal, CA)

    1999 Lyrics

    {Don't worry, I won't hurt you
    I only want you to have some fun}

I was dreamin' when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray
But when I woke up this mornin', could've sworn it was judgment day
The sky was all purple, there were people runnin' everywhere
Tryin' to run from the destruction, you know I didn't even care

Say say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine

I was dreamin' when I wrote this, so sue me if I go too fast
But life is just a party and parties weren't meant to last
War is all around us, my mind says prepare to fight
So if I gotta die I'm gonna listen to my body tonight

Yeah hey, they say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
    Yeah, yeah, hey

People, let me tell you somethin'

If you didn't come to party, don't bother knockin' on my door, oww
I got a lion in my pocket and baby he's ready to roar, yeah hey
Everybody's got a bomb, we could all die any day, oh
But before I let that happen, I'll dance my life away, oh ho

They say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
    (We're runnin' out of time)
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
    (We gonna, we gonna, oh)

    Say it one more time
Two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
    (No, no)
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
    (We gonna, we gonna)

    Alright, nineteen ninety-nine
    You say it, nineteen ninety-nine
    Mmm nineteen ninety-nine
    (Oww, nineteen ninety-nine)

Don't stop it, don't stop it, say it one more time
Two thousand zero zero party over, oops out of time
    (Yeah, yeah)
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine
    (We gonna, we gonna, whoa)
    Yeah, nineteen ninety-nine
    Don't you wanna go?
    (Nineteen ninety-nine)
    Don't you wanna go?
    (Nineteen ninety-nine)
We could all die any day
    (Nineteen ninety-nine)
I don't wanna die, I'd rather dance my life away
    (Nineteen ninety-nine)

Listen to what I'm tryin' to say
    Everybody, everybody say party
Come on now, you say it party
    That's right, everybody say party
    Can't run from revelation, no
    (Party)
Sing it for your nation, y'all
    (Party)
    (Ow!)
    Dreamin' when you're singin', baby
    (Party)
Say the telephone a ringin', mama, now
    (Party)
Come on, come on, you say
    (Party)
    Everybody, two times
    (Party)
    (Ow!)
Work it down to the ground, I'm sayin'
    (Party)
    Oh baby, say it again
    (Ooh hoo hoo)
    (Party)
    Oh, shake your body, baby!
    (Party)
That's right, come on, sing the song
    (Party)
    Ah aah ha
    (Party)

  • Written during the height of the Cold War, this party jam has a much deeper meaning, as Prince was expressing his fears of a nuclear Armageddon. Under the Reagan administration, the United States was stockpiling nuclear weapons and taking a hawkish stance against the Soviet Union, which he referred to as the "Evil Empire." In this song, Prince sings about enjoying our time on earth while we still can, since by year 2000, we probably won't be here ("Everybody's got a bomb, we could all die any day").
  • The first single released from the album of the same name, it didn't make it into the Top 40 on the first attempt, but did upon re-release after "Little Red Corvette" hit the Top 10.
  • Prince re-recorded this in 1998 after leaving Warner Brothers Records, who retained rights to the original recording. Prince hated Warner Brothers, and re-recorded it in an attempt to keep them from profiting from the original version. The new version was a minor hit at the beginning of 1999.
  • According to Rolling Stone magazine, Prince originally recorded the opening verse in three-part harmony. Later he split up the vocals, and the harmony parts became a new melody. When Prince recorded this track, he would go all day and all night without rest, and turn down food since he felt eating would make him sleepy.
  • This is credited to "Prince And The Revolution." The Revolution was his backup band at the time. The lead female vocal was by Jill Jones, who was a member of the band. She also appeared in Prince's movies Purple Rain and Graffiti Bridge.
  • 1999 was Prince's fifth album. His first four sold fairly well, but this one was a huge hit, marking his first entry into the Billboard 200 chart (peaking at #9) and becoming certified four times Platinum. It was the fifth best-selling album of 1983.
  • On January 16, 1999, the song spent a week on the Hot 100 at #40, thus making it the only entry to appear on the US singles chart in the year synonymous with its title. Here are four others with the year they charted in brackets: James Blunt "1973" (2007), Smashing Pumpkins "1979" (1996), Spirit "1984" (1970) and Bowling for Soup "1985" (2007). Also Estelle's 1980 was a #14 hit in the UK in 2004.
  • Many listeners, including Phil Collins, have compared this song to Collins' similar-sounding "Sussudio," released three years later. The singer admitted he was a big Prince fan and often listened to the 1999 album while on tour.

  • The Brothers Osbourne co-wrote this traditional-sounding country tune with Nashville songwriter Connie Harrington (Lee Brice's "I Drive Your Truck"). T.J. Osbourne explained the song's old-school vibe to Billboard magazine. "We recorded that song live in the studio," he said. "It's very easy to get caught up in the glamour of a Nashville studio, and have it suck the life out of a song -- if you're not careful. On that song, we were able to get in and do it like an old country song - live, with no Auto-Tuning."

"There's some imperfections in the vocal and the guitar, but ultimately, it has that stark and real vibe that it needed to have," he added. "Emotionally, that one takes the most out of us to perform."

    Someday, We'll Be Together Lyrics

    Someday we'll be together
    Say it, say it again
    Someday we'll be together
You're far away from me my love, and just as sure my,
My baby as there are stars above,
    I wanna say, I wanna say, I wanna say some day we'll be together;
Yes we will, yes we will say some day we'll be together.
Someday day, some sweet day we will be together
    I know, I know, I know, I know

    My love is yours, baby
    Oh, right from the start
You, you, you possess my soul now honey
And I know, I know you won my heart.
And I wanna say someday (some sweet day) we'll be together.
Ah,yes we will, yes we will
someday we'll be together, tell everybody now
Ah,yes we will, yes we will
Long time ago my, my sweet thing, I made a big mistake, honey.
    I say, I said goodbye.
Oh, Oh baby ever ever, ever, never, never since that day now,
Now all I, all I wanna do ah is cry, cry, cry, cry
    Oh hey, hey, hey
How long are you, every night,
Just to kiss your sweet, sweet lips,
Hold you ever so tight and I wanna say
    Someday we'll be together.
Oh, yes we will, yes we will.
    Someday we'll be together.
Oh, yes we will, yes we will.
    Someday we'll be together.
    Ah, honey, honey
    some day we'll be together.
Yes we will, yes we will

  • This was a remake of a song originally recorded by the duo Johnny & Jackey (Johnny Bristol and Jackey Beavers) in 1961. Motown Records brought in Bristol to produce a new version of the song for Jr. Walker & the All-Stars, but Motown chief Berry Gordy decided to give it to Diana Ross as her first solo single away from The Supremes. Bristol struggled to get the sound he wanted from Ross, and encouraged her along the way, which made it onto tape: That's him coaching Diana through the song, offering "Sing it pretty" and "You better" along the way.
  • Motown decided to release this as by "Diana Ross and the Supremes," even though Ross was the only member of the group whose voice is on the recording - the backing vocals are by session artists. The next song Ross recorded, which was "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)," became her first solo single.
  • Janet Jackson sampled this on her 1993 hit single "If."

  • The debut single from Danika Portz finds the Iowa native comparing a disastrous love affair to life in the circus. It is an unusual lyric for a country artist, though Miranda Lambert also used the circus as a metaphor on her Platinum track "Two Rings Shy." "It's a little flowery, which scares some people off," Portz admitted to Billboard magazine.

"I wrote it with Chris Drizen, who is a great writer," she continued. "We started with a melody, which sounds circus-y. It was very dark. I always loved going to the circus, and I loved that imagery idea. Because of the melody, it felt very angst-y, like someone had been wronged. It was easy to take it in that direction, and there are so many images that come along with that theme."
