Do You Lyrics

(Tututututututututu)

I was on 45th
I was half out of a dive
Yeah I knew that you saw me
You laughed when I looked back
I thought I'd given up
Now I didn't feel so bad
And then a shock went through me
And then I walked right back

Do You want to get understood?
Do you want one thing or are you looking for sainthood?
Do you run when it's just getting good?
Or do you, do you, do you, do you, wooh

(Tututututututututu)

Someone get Popsicles
Someone do something bout this heat
'Cause it's late in October
And tar's still melting in the streets
You tiptoe for ages and lose yourself
Flipping back pages, unbuckling belts

Oh love, that's the way love comes
Do you, don't you know that that's the way love comes?
Do you feel it black and blue?
Or do you, do you, do you, do you

(Tututututututututu) Wooh wooh wooh
(Tututututututututu) Oh yeah
(Hm hm hm)

    New National Anthem Lyrics

I know radio prolly ain't gonna play this
But chopper going off in the hood man
Like Afghanistan or the Gaza strip somewhere man
Yeah, we hear it so much we probably numb to it by now
After all, it’s the American way right?

Home of the brave and free (It’s America)
Free just to murder me (land of the handgun)
Land of the beautiful (home of the shotgun)
Cursed by the hate we throw (You’re dead if you ain’t got one)
Is this the New National Anthem? (It was like this before I got here baby, I ain’t do it)
Is this the new national anthem? (I ain’t start it, I’m just a part of it)

    Turn it! Aite

You say this the home of the brave I guess
I say this the home of the K’s and the vets
All alone with the J’s smoking yay cause he stressed
On chrome with a Tek taught to spray for respect
I learned from the best used to stay in the “jects†
Bought work from the vets burning rubber in the vets
This as good as it gets used to play with the rats
Then I got older and learned stay away from the rats
God blessed this nigga, to hustle up and make eight figures
Turned from a goon to a great young nigga
No complaining just doing what it take young nigga
I was raised in a decade of hate young nigga
Always dodging polices because they hate young niggas
And we hate them too, 38 in him shoe
All the changes the system will take him through
He ain’t a killer but he will if you make him do it
Homicide he’ll ride, they’ll put him on trial
Let him have a life sentence then do it with a smile
And he only 19, he ain’t even had a child
As a child, told his mama he’ll be gone for a while
And she cried, still they just put him inside
Now she all on her own because her other son died
Listen to the politician as he lied and he lied
He a snake in a suit, trying to hide in disguise

Home of the brave and free (well damn officer what did I do?)
Free just to murder me (Naw hold up man don’t shoot, I live over there)
Land of the beautiful (ay, ay man what you doin)
Cursed by the hate we throw (you trippin' dawg)
Is this the new national anthem (how many times has that ever happened to you, what the fuck do you know about being a black man in America?)
Is this the new national anthem (And you wonder why we walk around with straps)

Fuck is you sayin' (Who you gon' talk?)

For the stars and the stripes prison bars and the pipe
Young nigga rolling weed in a cigar he can light
Bang red either blue selling hard and the white
Live by the gun, never run from a fight
Trayvon in a hoodie, walking through the neighborhood he
Didn’t do shit to buddy, he didn’t have to die did he?
I guess it’s because his dad was a judge in the city
They didn’t want him in the pen with the thugs that could get him
A jury of his peers said all was forgiven
But touch one of mine, right or wrong, I’ma kill them
Fill them with the lead like they put in Martin Luther King’s head
Like they killed Malcolm X, Edgar Hoover did that
You can catch me in the hood where they shooting niggas at
They don’t know if Neighborhood or the Hoovers did that
Whether Piru or VL's or GDs wit me we
Down to uprise from the OG’s to peewees

Home of the brave and free (Don’t get it fucked up)
Free just to murder me (If you ain’t found something you’re willing to die for, you ain’t fit to live)
Land of the beautiful (To get something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done)
Cursed by the hate we throw (I’ma die by mine)
Is this the new national anthem (America, you created a monster that refused to beat noise, the ? Is up)
Is this the new national anthem (yeah we do evolution, ? Stupid shit)

Hell is what is you chaning' dawg
    What is you doin'

    Let me ask you something
If the kids are the future
Tell me why you can get more for being C.O.
Than you can for being a teacher.
Tell me why it means more to the government
To pay the people who got to watch over the prisoners
More than the people who got to keep the children from becoming prisoners.
    That make sense?
Tell me why 9 ounces of crack will get you more time than a rape right now
Tell me why them crazy white boys can tote a gun but I can’t right now
Yea I had felonies, I done did dirt in the streets
But I ain’t ever gave it to anybody that didn’t deserve it, you know what I mean?
I ain’t ever ran in no public place with no pistol
Shooting no innocent people. I ain’t never ran in no school killing no kids
Man this is the result of you refusing to deal with the issues at hand
We are a product of the environment you placed us in
We ain't do it, we just lived through it

Home of the brave and free (message to my people)
Free just to murder me (stop waiting on folk to help you, help yourself, it starts with you)
Land of the beautiful (get yourself out, reach back, get somebody else out)
Cursed by the hate we throw
Is this the new national anthem (and that’s the way we’re going to get ahead)
(Sittin' around waiting on government to do something for us ain't never gonna happen partner they don’t give a fuck about us)
Is this the new national anthem but don’t play into their hand partner, you making it easy for em

    Hell is you doin'?

  • This song finds T.I. rapping socially conscious lyrics over a military beat. The Atlanta native rhymes about some of the problems faced by black people in America today including crooked cops and inequality in the criminal justice system.
  • That's Skylar Grey crooning the gut-wrenching chorus. The Wisconsin singer-songwriter was a guest vocalist on Dr Dre's "I Need a Doctor" and Diddy-Dirty Money's "Coming Home." She also received a Grammy nomination for writing the chorus to Eminem's hit single with Rihanna, "Love The Way You Lie."
  • The song was released soon after the August 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri by a white cop. T.I. actually laid down the cut in 2013 after the George Zimmerman verdict for Trayvon. "Immediately when I heard it, I knew it was going to be a scary, impactful, profound record," he said. "It's so heavy with purpose and intent to shed light on a very, very taboo topic in America, which is the way young black people are treated, perceived and handled."

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic Lyrics

Though I've tried before to tell her
Of the feelings I have for her in my heart
Every time that I come near her I just lose my nerve
As I've done from the start

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on

Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met
    It's a big enough umbrella
But it's always me that ends up getting wet.

Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on

I resolved to call her up a thousand times a day.
And ask her if she'll marry me in some old fashioned way.
But my silent fears have gripped me long before I reach the phone
Long before my time has tripped me must I always be alone

Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on

Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on

Oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah
Every little thing, every little thing, every little thing, every little thing
Every little, every little, ever little, every little thing she does
    Every little thing she does
    Every little thing she does
    Every little thing she does

Beo, beo, beo, beo, beo, beo, beo, beo
Beo, beo, beo, beo, beo, beo, beo, beo

    Every little thing

    Every little thing
    She do is
    Magic, magic, magic

  • This was originally an acoustic ballad Sting wrote while The Police were known as Strontium 90 (and included bassist Mike Howlett). You can hear the first recording of this song if you find their rare CD, Police Academy, released in 1997 and produced by Mike Howlett.
  • Sting used a lyric from this, "Do I have to tell the story of a thousand rainy days since we first met? It's a big enough umbrella but it's always me that ends up getting wet," on some other songs he wrote, including The Police's "O My God" from Synchronicity and "Seven Days" from his solo album Ten Summoner's Tales. (thanks, Jeff - Kendall Park, NJ, for above 2)
  • True to their punk roots, The Police have some colorful and dysfunctional characters in their early songs. While this song seems very endearing, the guy clearly has some issues, as he pursues a girl who does not return his affections. He might be crossing over into stalker territory as he resolves to call her up "1000 times a day."
  • This was the only track on Ghost In The Machine not recorded in Montserrat, an island in the Caribbean (it was recorded in Canada). However the promo video was shot at George Martin's Montserrat studio - we can see people of the island with the members of the band. The Police were deeply influenced by the music of the Caribbean (reggae music). (thanks, Mylene - Guadeloupe French West Indies)
  • This was the first demo Sting ever played for his bandmates. Good thing it's not a timely tune: they didn't record it until their fourth album, Ghost in the Machine.
  • In 1982 this won the Best Pop Song at the annual Ivor Novello Awards.
  • The intro to this song was used by German R&B singer Sebastian Hamer for "Immer Noch." His song's meaning is just about the opposite of the original. (thanks, Thomas - Saarbrucken, Germany)
  • This appeared on the soundtrack of the Adam Sandler movie The Wedding Singer and the 2005 film Bewitched. (thanks, Jazzz - Frankfurt, Germany)
  • In the book MTV Ruled the World - The Early Years of Music Video, Police drummer Stewart Copeland talks about the fallout from playing with all those buttons during this video: "'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' we shot in Montserrat, and it's strange how that was regarded as, 'The Who destroying equipment of our time,' because we were trashing that Trident desk. And that desk, by the way, ended up at Studio One in A&M, here in Los Angeles, and I've been to five or six different studios around the world that claim that the Neve sitting in their room is the one that we trashed. And I don't know which one is which. One Neve is the same as the other, if you ask me. And we weren't aware of trashing it at all. We were in the habit - because we were all very fit - of climbing over it, because it was very long. And if you were over there and you wanted to get over here to hit a fader or something, we'd just climb over it. Certainly, we were not cognizant of any abuse of the console. But we were just dancing around."
  • Sting already had this song in his pocket when he moved from his home city of Newcastle. He recalled in Daniel Rachel's book of interviews with British songwriters, Isle of Noises : "When I moved to London in 1975, I was struggling to make a living. I auditioned at the Zanzibar in Covent Garden. I sang 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' and the guy said: 'We need commercial hit songs. We don't need this kind of stuff.'"
  • "This song was included [on Ghost in the Machine] to try and leaven the rather sober tone of the rest of the record," Sting wrote in Lyrics By Sting. "It was written in 1976, the year I moved to London. I had no money, no prospects, nowhere to live. All I had was Stewart Copeland's phone number and some vague idea of forming a band. It was the year of the Sex Pistols, punk rock, aggressive loud music, violent lyrics, and 'Anarchy In The UK.' And I wrote this song, which tells you how in touch with the times I was."
  • This was used in The Office (US) episode "Phyllis' Wedding" in 2007.
  • A rather obvious hit, this was the first single from the Ghost in the Machine everywhere except the UK, where "Invisible Sun," a song dealing with the political climate in Belfast, was issued first.

    I Want Out Lyrics

All we are is leaves in the wind
And all of our moments pass us by before they begin

    And I know I can't deny
    The burning in your eyes
I need a little more now
    Wage against the dying light
It's burning me tonight 'cause I need it

'Cause if this is love, baby, I Want Out (oh oh oh oh)
I will light up the sky as we burn it down (oh oh oh oh)
I know you can't doubt it, but let me say
'Cause I know it's better this way
'Cause if this is love, baby, I want out (oh oh oh oh)

All we are is breath against the glass
Just like the ashes of a fire fading fast

    Yeah, I know I can't deny
    The burning in your eyes
I need a little more now
Will you dance the time left
Is burning me tonight 'cause I need it

'Cause if this is love, baby, I want out (oh oh oh oh)
I will light up the sky as we burn it down (oh oh oh oh)
I know you can't doubt it, but let me say
'Cause I know it's better this way
'Cause if this is love, baby, I want out (oh oh oh oh)

  • The first single from Young Guns third album, this was recorded in Bath, England with producer Steve Osborne (U2, Joy Division). The tune was debuted on BBC Radio 1 by Zane Lowe as the DJ's 'Hottest Record in the World' on August 7, 2014.
  • The song's music video was directed by Drew Cox. "With this being the video for our first new song, we wanted to have some fun and shoot something a little different and trippy and slightly unconventional for a rock video," vocalist Gustav Wood told Billboard magazine. "The director, Drew Cox, was totally on board and we had a lot of fun using projections and playing with video screens. It's got a great energy to it and we're really stoked with the results."
  • Frontman Gustav Wood told the story of the song to Kerrang!: "With the way the melody works, the first hit of the chorus had to be in a statement – it had to be something that feels good when I'm shouting it as loud as I can.

The first thing that came into my head was 'I want out,' and often the first thing that comes in is the best.

I had this line in my head for ages about how temporary and transient everything has a tendency of being, 'All we are is leaves in the wind.' Now, I sing the song, and to me it's about how finite life is. You have to enjoy every moment so if you're not happy with something, change it."
  • The lyric, "All we are is pressed against the glass" was inspired by the iconic video for Alanis Morissette's "Ironic," where the singer is in the car and driving through the snow. Wood explained: "I had this vision of being in a car, and it's all fogged up, and someone writing 'I want out' on the window in the fog."
  • The "Rage against the dying light" lyric is the opening line of the Dylan Thomas poem Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night. Gustav Wood said: "I've wanted to put it in a song for ages – you have to be a magpie and collect little bits and pieces. And that's really important, because if you sit down to write a song and you've got nothing in the bank, that's a really difficult place to be."

Originally published in the journal Botteghe Oscure in 1951, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night's connotation with death and endings has been much used in film and television.

The "rage against the dying light" line was previously used by Garbage in their 2012 track "Big Bright World."

  • This disco classic is about a woman with a great body. She is "Built like a Brick House." The original phrase is, "She's built like a brick s--thouse." That's the reason for the pause with the horn fill between the words "brick" and "house." (thanks, Dan - Orlando, FL)
  • As explained in Commodores press materials, when the group needed another song for the album, their guitar/trumpet player William King was sent home to write one. He fell asleep trying to think of something, and when he woke up, there was a pad of paper on his chest with the lyrics written on it. Lucky for King, his wife Shirley Hanna-King was also a songwriter, and she wrote the words while he was sleeping. The lyrics were put to a groove the band came up with in a jam session to complete the song.
  • This song epitomizes the funky side of the the Commodores, who could switch between uptempo R&B and easy listening by swapping singers. "Brick House" was sung by their drummer Walter Orange, and their softer songs like "Easy" and "Three Times A Lady," used Lionel Richie on lead vocals. Richie enjoyed tremendous adult contemporary success as a solo artist after leaving the Commodores in 1982.
  • At one point, the woman in this song is described as "36-24-36." These very shapely measurements have often appeared in song: they were used a year earlier in the AC/DC song "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," and The Shadows released a song called "36-24-36" in 1961. In 1959, the movie A Private's Affair featured a musical number where three guys sing the praises of these measurements in another song with these measurements in the title.

By the '90s, at least some artists preferred a fuller figure: In "Baby Got Back," Sir Mix-a-Lot says, "36-24-36? Ha ha, only if she's 5'3."
  • In 1991 the Commodores were inducted into The National Association of Brick Distributors' Brick Hall of Fame in recognition of this song.
  • In 2003, Richie recorded a new version of this with hard-rocker Rob Zombie for Zombie's horror movie House Of 1000 Corpses. It was an odd pairing, but the singers professed mutual respect for each other. Said Zombie, "The movie is so f--cked that we needed something equally as f--cked to go with it."

  • One of the most popular tracks by Prong, the lyric to this song came to frontman Tommy Victor when he was riding in the subway. "It's one of those songs that comes from being in the moment," he told us. "That's what it's about: you want to enjoy what's going on right now instead of worrying about these things in the past or worrying about the future, really." (Here's the full Tommy Victor interview .)
  • The song juxtaposes the anodyne act of snapping your fingers with the brutal image of snapping your neck as a metaphor for extremes: either is fine as long as you're doing it mindfully and with passion.
  • This song owes a debt to a Canadian group called Front Line Assembly. When Tommy Victor worked as a soundman at the club CBGS's, patrons would sometimes give him tapes hoping he would play them. One of these tapes was a recording by Front Line Assembly that he later used as the musical basis for this track (although he made it much more metal). Victor says that the band knows all about this, and are cool with it.
  • One of Prong's forebears is the British band Killing Joke, and many of that group's trademark elements appear on this track, including percussive guitar, overtones, and a flange effect on the chorus.

    Lightning Crashes Lyrics

Lightning Crashes a new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
    The angel opens her eyes
    The confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even close the door

Lightning crashes an old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
    The angel closes her eyes
    The confusion that was hers
Belongs now to the baby down the hall

    [Chorus]
Oh now feel it, comin' back again
Like a rollin', thunder chasing the wind
    Forces pullin' from
The center of the earth again
    I can feel it.

Lightning crashes a new mother cries
This moment she's been waiting for
    The angel opens her eyes
    Pale blue colored iris
    Presents the circle
And puts the glory out to hide, hide

    [Chorus: x3]

  • The band dedicated this to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time this song was written. Her brother in-law Cory told us the story:
The song's lyrics are mostly an analogy. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber. These lyrics are constantly misunderstood! Yes, Ed is speaking to the circle of life, but specifically to how Barb's life gave new life to many. The angel, the baby down the hall, the pale blue eyes (of Barb), the pain ("confusion")... the lyrics are wholly Ed's interpretation of his experience and perception of Barb's impact. Our family has become close with the most genuine and caring man who is still alive today (over 10 years later), who has Barb's heart beating in his chest! "Lightning Crashes" literally lives on.
  • At their concerts in the late 1990s, Live dedicated this to the victims of the tragedy at Columbine High School.
  • This was the biggest hit off the album and of Live's entire career. Throwing Copper was produced by Talking Heads guitarist Jerry Harrison.

    Fake Money Song Chart
  • The first track on Arkells third album, High Noon, is reminiscent of the song "Deadlines" that begins their critically acclaimed and commercially successful 2008 debut album, Jackson Square. In our interview with Arkells lead singer and guitarist, Max Kerman , he called "Fake Money" a "Deadlines: Part 2" because of their similar themes.
  • The band wanted to come out swinging with this tune on High Noon and showcase that at their core they are still a five-piece rock and roll band. "Fake Money" is Arkells first "protest song" and meant to be a fist-pumper.

The song is about people in the position of power such as business men and investment bankers who control money. They can sometimes act recklessly with other people’s money treating it like a fun game. They can behave like children with money causing disastrous outcomes rather than responsibly handling it. The opening verse of the song displays this meaning well:

    Oh, you're just a boy
    A little banker boy
    Everything's a game
    Now everyone's your toy
  • The title of the album was partly inspired by the 1952 western film High Noon starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly because of the cinematic theme of the album. The title was taken from a lyric in "Fake Money" when Kerman sings, "You're some cowboy at high noon."

In our interview with Kerman, he explained the meaning behind the title of the record, "I think at high noon there is a moment of complication and there should be some clarity after the fact. A lot of these songs are trying to provide that clarity."

    Album: God Shuffled His Feet
    Released: 1993

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Lyrics

Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed him so hard

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

Once there was this girl who
Wouldn't go and change with the girls in the change room
But when they finally made her
They saw birthmarks all over her body
    She couldn't quite explain it
    They'd always just been there

    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

But both the girl and boy were glad
Cause one kid had it worse than that

Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school
And when they went to their church
They shook and lurched all over the church floor
    He couldn't quite explain it
    They'd always just gone there

  • The song tells the story of three children whose strange experiences seem normal to them. The theme is the strength of the family unit.
  • The Crash Test Dummies are Canadian. They began as a cover group while lead singer Brad Roberts studied to be a professor in English literature. Roberts played guitar in the group but did not sing because he thought his voice was too deep. A vocal coach convinced him that he had a good, distinctive voice, and Roberts' deep baritone made this stand out on the radio. Even today, very few people sing as low as he does on rock records.
  • In 2000, Roberts was nearly killed in a car accident, but escaped with a broken arm before his car exploded. The band is named after the devices used to test the effects of car accidents on humans. They once toured with Alanis Morissette, who might consider this ironic.
  • This was a success on the adult album alternative (AAA) format that was gaining momentum at the time. Other artists who found success there are the Cranberries and Counting Crows.
  • This was the group's only US Top 40 hit, although three years earlier they had a big song with "Superman's Dead," which reached US #56 and sold over 400,000 copies in Canada.
  • Talking Heads guitarist Jerry Harrison produced this. He has also produced other modern rock artists like Stroke 9, Live and No Doubt.
  • Between the title and the unconventional vocals, disc jockeys made lots of jokes about this when they played it. Some said it sounded like "Sylvester Stallone on Quaaludes."
  • The band released their first album in 1991 and put out the single "Superman's Song," which hit #56 in the US. "Superman's Song" was used as the B-Side of this.
  • As a result of this song, The Crash Test Dummies were nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy in 1994, even though they formed in the late '80s and released their first album in 1991.
  • This is the longest song title made up of one letter repeated. (thanks, Adam - Wrexham, Wales)
  • Like black licorice or the Grateful Dead, people tend to either love this or hate it. Despite its popularity, VH1 named it one of the "Top 50 worst songs of the '90s," outraging fans of the song. (thanks, Ricky - Cabot, AR)
  • The Crash Test Dummies once played at the MuchMusic awards singing "Weird Al" Yankovic's parody, "Headline News" with Yankovic. They both played the music and Brad Roberts sang in his low low voice. The Weird Al version calls for the sound of kazoos right at the end. Al wasn't expecting to have this feature live on stage when singing with Roberts, but was pleasantly surprised when all the Crash Test Dummies suddenly whipped out kazoos and started "quacking" through the end of the song. (thanks, Jason - Wairoa, New Zealand)

    Come to Light Lyrics

    Ooh for a second there
    I felt peace and calm
    The underpass
    Would keep us from harm
    And the wipers moved
    Like some waving arms
    We were flashing headlights
    At coming cars

    But up in the distance
Even in the dead of night
If we can make it to the morning
    We can get things right
It's been a tough go lately
    I hate choosing sides
What we do in the darkness
    Will Come to Light, alright

Ooh and in times of fear
    You shelter me
    And you hold me close
    So tenderly
    And with my headphones on
    As I fall asleep
    You're my barricade
    From intruding dreams

    But up in the distance
Even in the dead of night
If we can make it to the mornin'
    We can get things right
It's been a tough go lately
    I hate choosing sides
What we do in the darkness
    Will come to light, alright

    Will come to light, alright
    Will come to light, alright

    Ooh and then silence fell
    When I picked up
    Those words hit me hard
    Like a one two punch
    So I went home
    To face the storm
    And the thought of you
    Keeps me warm

    But up in the distance
Even in the dead of night
If we can make it to the morning
    We can get things right
It's been a tough go lately
    I hate choosing sides
What we do in the darkness (yeah)
What we do in the darkness
    Comes to light

    When every thing went wrong
    You're keeping my head on
    And in time
    The things that hurt today
    Will begin to fade away

  • The first official single from Arkells third album High Noon is an Americana, driving type of song inspired by lead singer Max Kerman's love for sports.

Kerman reads a lot of sports journalism and loves the storylines that happen in sports culture. Arkells songs are often inspired by these stories - you can hear examples in "Kiss Cam" and "Agent Zero" from their 2011 sophomore album, Michigan Left.

"Come to Light" is another example. A line in the chorus, "What we do in the darkness, will come to light" borrows from a quotation from the mid-twentieth century African-American baseball player, Buck O'Neil. Kerman was reading a biography about O'Neil called The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's Life by Joe Posnanski. Kerman was moved by O'Neil's story about living in a time with segregation and having no luck going for him. Despite his struggles, O'Neil always had a positive attitude and treated people with compassion and respect.

Kerman explained in our interview the meaning of the song. "The general idea is just keeping your s--t together when you're going through a tough time," he said. "I was using the metaphor of being in the dark and just making it to the next day so you can sort everything out."

    Puttin' On the Ritz Lyrics

If your blue and you don't know where to go to
why don't you go where fashion sits
    Puttin' On the Ritz.

Different types of wear all day coat pants
with stripes and cut away coats for perfect fits
    Puttin' on the Ritz.

Dressed up like a million dollar trooper
Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper
    Super-Duper

    Come lets mix where Rockafellers
    walk with sticks or umbrellas
    in their mits
    Puttin' on the Ritz.

Have you seen the well to do
    Up and down Park Avenue
    On that famous through fare
With their noses in the air
    High hats and narrow collars
White spats and lots of dollars
    Spending every dime
    For a wonderful time.

If your blue and you don't know where to go to
why don't you go where fashion sits
    Puttin' on the Ritz.

Puttin' On the Ritz Song Chart
  • This was originally written in 1929 by legendary composer Irving Berlin ("God Bless America"). It was a hit for Fred Astaire in 1946 when he performed it in the movie Blue Skies. Taco pays homage to Astaire by including a tap-dance solo in the middle of the song.
  • The expression "Puttin' On The Ritz" means to dress fashionably. The saying comes from the upscale Ritz-Carlton hotel company.
  • Born in Jakarta, Indonesia to Dutch parents on July 21, 1955, Taco Ockerse (yes, it's his real name) was raised in Germany, where he studied dance and theater. He made a name for himself on the European supper-club circuit by dressing in formal attire and performing dance versions of American standards. This song was on his first album, and it became an unlikely hit when MTV picked up the video, which showcased Taco's distinctive look and performance that he had perfected in the supper-clubs. MTV didn't have many videos at the time, and this one had lavish costumes, a glowing cane and a tap dance sequence, making it very appealing to the fledgling network. (thanks, Rob - Jemseg, NB)
  • This appeared in the West German stage remake of West Side Story.
  • Taco's entire repertoire was comprised of older songs including some by Jazz bandleader Glen Miller and show tune writer George Gershwin. He played the role of "Chico" in a Marx Brothers stage show in Germany.
  • Taco's follow-up album was also named after an Irving Berlin song he covered, "Let's Face the Music and Dance." He also did Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek."
  • This came out around the same time as a cheesy TV show called Puttin' On The Hits. In the show, contestants would lip-synch for prizes. It could only have happened in the '80s.
  • In the Mel Brooks movie Young Frankenstein, there's a scene where Dr. Frankenstein (played by Gene Wilder) does a song-and-dance act to this with his monster.
