Vincent Song Chart

The words and imagery of this song represent the life, work, and death of Vincent Van Gogh. A Starry Night is one of the Dutch impressionist's most famous paintings.

The lyrics, "Paint your palette blue and gray" reflect the prominent colors of the painting, and are probably a reference to Vincent's habit of sucking on or biting his paintbrushes while he worked. The "ragged men in ragged clothes" and "how you tried to set them free" refer to Van Gogh's humanitarian activities and love of the socially outcast as also reflected in his paintings and drawings. "They would not listen/They did not know how" refers to Van Gogh's family and some associates who were critical of his kindness to "the wretched."

"How you suffered for your sanity" refers to the schizophrenic disorder from which Van Gogh suffered. (thanks, Bruce - West Columbia, SC)

McLean told The Daily Telegraph February 24, 2010 the story of this song: "In the autumn of 1970 I had a job singing in the school system, playing my guitar in classrooms. I was sitting on the veranda one morning, reading a biography of Van Gogh, and suddenly I knew I had to write a song arguing that he wasn't crazy. He had an illness and so did his brother Theo. This makes it different, in my mind, to the garden variety of 'crazy' – because he was rejected by a woman [as was commonly thought]. So I sat down with a print of Starry Night and wrote the lyrics out on a paper bag."

McLean was going through a dark period when he wrote this song. He explained to The Daily Telegraph: "I was in a bad marriage that was torturing me. I was tortured. I wasn't as badly off as Vincent was, but I wasn't thrilled, let's put it that way."

This song, and Van Gogh's painting, reflect what it's like to be misunderstood. Van Gogh painted "Starry Night" after committing himself to an asylum in 1889. He wrote that night was "more richly colored than the day," but he couldn't go outside to see the stars when he was committed, so he painted the night sky from memory.

Talking about the song on the UK show Songbook, McLean said: "It was inspired by a book. And it said that it was written by Vincent's brother, Theo. And Theo also had this illness, the same one Van Gogh had. So what caused the idea to percolate in my head was, first of all, what a beautiful idea for a piece of music. Secondly, I could set the record straight, basically, he wasn't crazy. But then I thought, well, how do you do this? Again, I wanted to have each thing be different.

I'm looking through the book and fiddling around and I saw the painting. I said, Wow, just tell the story using the color, the imagery, the movement, everything that's in the painting. Because that's him more than he is him.

One thing I want to say is that music is like poetry in so many ways. You have wit and drama and humor and pathos and anger and all of these things create the subtle tools that an artist, a stage artist, a good one, uses. Sadly, this has really gone out of music completely. So it makes someone like me a relic, because I am doing things and people like me are doing things that utilize all the classic means of emotional expression."

There could be some religious meaning in this song. McLean is a practicing Catholic, and has written songs like "Jerusalem" and "Sister Fatima" that deal with his faith. The "Starry Night" could mean creation, with many of the other lyrics referring to Jesus. McLean has said that several of the songs on the American Pie album have a religious aspect to them, notably the closing track "Babylon."

Josh Groban recorded the song for his self-titled debut album, which was released in 2001 when he was just 20 years old.

The British electronic artist Vincent Frank aka Frankmusik (check out "Better Off as Two") was named after this song.

Irish singer Brian Kennedy sang this song at footballer George Best's funeral.

According to the movie Tupac, the Resurrection, Gangsta rapper Tupac Shakur was influenced by Don McLean, and this was his favorite song. When he was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting in 1996, his girlfriend put this tune into a player next to his hospital bed to ensure it was the last thing he heard.

Underneath the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, there is a time capsule that contains the sheet music to this song along with some of the artist's brushes. This song is often played at the museum.

This soundtracked the moment on the "'Scuse Me While I Miss the Sky" episode of The Simpsons when Lisa becomes interested in astronomy.

Will Hoge pays tribute to the people and places that populate the US's flyover states on this rock-based anthem. He penned the song with Jessi Alexander (Lee Brice's "I Drive Your Truck") and Tommy Lee James (Tim McGraw's "She's My Kind Of Rain").

Hoge told Rolling Stone about the writing session that produced the song: "We were just trying to write a great song and as it went on I started getting more and more attached to it," he recalled. "There's always that moment of, 'Do I want to keep this song for myself because I think it's really great, or do I want to send it to Blake Shelton and make a whole bunch of money off of it? Maybe he'll want it.' It's a strange place to be, but I'm pragmatic enough to know that sometimes that's the right play."

"The only other time that this has happened to me, when I played something for a producer and then everybody lined up behind it, was with 'Even If It Breaks Your Heart,'" Hoge added.

The song acts as Hoge's own experience of life in a small middle American town. "All of those lyrics reflected all of our upbringings," he said. "There's always somebody who's too drunk, and there's always the frat guy and the jock, and there's the guy that's staying home and the girl who's being broken up with. It's everywhere … We wanted to convey the idea that [life] is a little screwed up, and we all make mistakes, but it is what it is."

The song came to fruition as Hoge, Alexander and James began telling stories about growing up. "You want to try to find your place among your peers. You're trying to push the envelope just enough with your parents to not get in big trouble but also your folks are trying to teach you a lesson," he explained to Radio.com . "It's just the battle you have to fight to get through those little minutes of growing up, and trying to encapsulate that in a three-minute pop song with a catchy chorus is the best that we could do."

Detroit Made Song Chart

An ode to the Buick Electra 225, this song was originally penned by folk-rocker John Hiatt for his 2011 release, Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns.

The Buick Electra 225 was a full-size premium automobile built by the Buick division of General Motors in Detroit between 1959 and 1990. The Electra 225 moniker was a nod to the vehicle's overall length of 225 inches.

Bob Seger covered this during his spring 2013 concert tour dates after stumbling on the track whilst listening to SiriusXM Outlaw Country. He later recorded the song, releasing it to coincide with the 20th annual Woodward Dream Cruise car show on August 16, 2014.

Seger had hoped to get Kid Rock to lay down the tune with him, but he was too busy with the start of his 2014 tour. The Detroit rocker enlisted several of his Silver Bullet Band members instead, including former Little Feat singer Shaun Murphy for backing vocals.

Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress) Song Chart

This contains one of the classic indecipherable lyrics in rock history. The part after "She was a long cool woman in a black dress" is "Just a 5' 9" beautiful tall."

The Distant Light album was out for a year before this song was released as a single. Before the single was released, lead singer Allan Clarke left the group, replaced by Swedish singer Michael Rickfors. After "Long Cool Woman" became a hit in the US, Clarke rethought his solo career and came back. The group released one album with Rickfors, which did not sell well.

On the charts, this was a rare miss in the UK, where the Hollies were from and where they had their greatest success. It was surprising, however, how well it did in the US.

This is the only Hollies single without any backing vocals. The reason why Clarke is the only singer on this record is that he didn't intended the song to be released on a Hollies album, but as a record of his own. When the band learned that he intended to do a solo recording, Clarke was issued an ultimatum - he could either remain with The Hollies or pursue a solo career, but not both. Clarke told Rolling Stone in 1973: "I think with me the band feared that if I got a hit I'd leave. How can you stop destiny? Now, if they originally agreed, I might not even have left. 'Long Cool Woman' would have been released a year earlier, and we'd have done a few tours of the States and maybe would have been really big."

Clarke wrote this song with the Brittish songwriters Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway. Cook and Greenaway also wrote "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" by The New Seekers.

Unveiled by Charli XCX on August 18, 2014, this song finds the singer-songwriter unenthused about the impending new school year:

"The song is inspired by a lot of the things I was listening to whilst in Sweden at the end of last year," Charli told Buzzfeed . "I spent about a month making a punk record and covering songs by Swedish punk bands like Snuffed By The Yakuza and stuff."

"This song was written when I came out of the other side of that punk phase and translated it into something more pop," she added. "Obviously, it's about not giving a f--k."

The song's music video concludes in a school prom and features Rose McGowan (Scream, Charmed) as a strict teacher. "I was inspired by movies like Jawbreaker and Carrie for the 'Break the Rules' video," said Charli. "I never went to prom when I was at school so this was kind of me living out my weird fantasy of what prom would be like in my head."

"I asked Rose McGowan to be in the video and I never ever thought she would say yes, but she did," she added, "so she came to prom too... And she trashed it."

The song was written by Charli XCX with Cashmere Cat, Robopop, Steve Mac and Stargate during a writing camp at Westlake Studios in Hollywood. "I got bad social anxiety because usually I only work with my close friends," the Boom Clap songstress recalled to Billboard magazine. "I went outside and sang this thing into my phone - wrote it in a car park in five minutes."

Stargate are best known for their production work with pop acts such as Rihanna and Katy Perry. Charli admitted to Digital Spy that the collaboration with the Norwegian hitmakers was unexpected. "That was something that I never thought would happen, because I feel that when I first signed a record deal I was really anti-Stargate and those kinds of producers," she said. Rucker wrote the song with Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum and Taylor Swift's producer, Nathan Chapman. "It's a little different for me. It's not one of those family songs - it's really a country party song," he told Rolling Stone. "It's talking about some country girl who lives in New York City. It's got hooks galore."

Rucker told the story of the song to Radio.com : "I was playing golf with Charles Kelley one day," he said. "Charles is probably my best friend in the business, we get along really well. He said, 'Man, we've been in Nashville seven years and have never written a song.' I hadn't really thought about it, but he was right. We had never written a song together."

"When I got to the session," he continued, "he had this great idea he had started with the opening line, 'Sitting in a bar in New York City everyone here looking New York pretty.'"

"[When] we finished it, we were sitting around," Rucker concluded, " and I said, 'This is my single.'"

Nathan Chapman whom Rucker credits as "a genius with melodies," also had a hand in writing the song.

The mainly performance video was filmed in Rucker's home state of South Carolina. The clip uses footage from a performance at HTC Center on August 23, 2014 as well as Coastal Carolina University and the Rivertown Bistro in the South Carolina town of Conway.

Charles Kelley recalled how he pushed for a writing session with Darius Rucker during a round of their favorite sport. "We were out playing golf, like we always do when he's in town, and I was gettin' on to him that we've never written before, and he said he was writing for a new record," the Lady Antebellum member recalled. "Literally, I didn't give him an out. He was having a busy day actually the next day singing vocals, and he was done until like 8 that night. I'm sure he was tuckered out. I said, 'We have to make this a priority and write,' and sure enough, came up with what I think is a great song."

This was written and originally recorded by Jim Weatherly, who had a solo hit in 1974 with "The Need To Be." Weatherly explained the origin of this song in an interview with Gary James: "The song actually came about after a phone call I had with Farrah Fawcett. Lee Majors was a friend of mine. We'd played in the Flag Football League together in L.A. He had just started dating Farrah. One day I called Lee and Farrah answered the phone. We were just talking and she said she was packing. She was gonna take the midnight plane to Houston to visit her folks. So, it just stayed with me. After I got off the phone, I sat down and wrote the song probably in about 30 to 45 minutes. Something like that. Didn't take me long at all, 'cause I actually used Farrah and Lee as kind of like characters I guess. A girl that comes to L.A. to make it and doesn't make it and leaves to go back home. The guy goes back with her. Pretty simple little story, but it felt real to me. It felt honest to me. I played it for them and they loved it. I cut it on my first album as 'Midnight Plane To Houston.' And then later on, maybe a year or six months later, a guy in Atlanta wanted to cut the song on Cissy Houston, Whitney's mother. They called and said they would like a more R&B sounding title and asked if we would mind if they changed the title to 'Midnight Train To Georgia' [so that "Houston" wouldn't appear in both the title and artist name]. We said 'change anything but the writer and publisher.' So, he cut the song on Cissy Houston and it was a nice little cross between an R&B and country record. It got on the R&B charts. That's the version that Gladys heard. Some of the background vocals you hear on Glady's records were first on Cissy Houston's record. It wasn't as much, but just some of the feel of the background vocals. And of course Gladys' record was more of a groove-oriented thing. It wasn't as slow. It just became a monster record."

Gladys Knight & The Pips recorded Weatherly's "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" in 1973 and released it as a kiss-off record as their contract to Motown Recording Company (Soul Record) was expiring. "Neither One of Us" was their biggest Motown/Soul hit, reaching #2 as the group signed with Buddha Records. When they decided to record an album consisting of only Jim Weatherly songs (Imagination), his publisher sent a copy of the song to Knight. This was the second single from the album, after "Where Peaceful Waters Flow." It became the group's biggest hit. The third and fourth singles off the album didn't do too badly either - "I've Got to Use My Imagination" peaked at #4 in the US, "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" #3.

"Midnight Train To Georgia" was not only a #1 hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B, but also a #10 on the UK Singles chart. It garnered the group the 1974 Grammy Award for "Best R&B Vocal Performance" and was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. It is considered Gladys Knight's signature song.

This title is name-checked in Billy Crystal's 1989 TV special Midnight Train to Moscow.

Films and television shows in which "Midnight Train To Georgia" is part of the soundtrack include The Deer Hunter, 30 Rock, House M.D., Broadcast News, and Las Vegas. It also gets its day in the sun in the 1974 episode of VH1's I Love the '70s: Volume 2. Richard Pryor (we still miss him) also used it in his 1977 special.
