Tubular Bells (Part 1) Lyrics

Tubular Bells (Part 1) Song Chart
  • This is an instrumental song that is more than 25 minutes long. The most famous part is the intro, which was used as the theme to the 1973 horror movie The Exorcist.
  • More than half of the instruments were played by Mike Oldfield. He insists that minimal synthesizer was used. (thanks Jeff - Kendall Park, NJ for above 2)
  • Some unusual instruments were used to record this, including a Farfisa organ, a Lowrey organ, and a flageolet (a kind of wind instrument). There were also flutes, a mandolin, and the tubular bells. The bells are represented on the album cover.
  • This makes up side one of the album. "Tubular Bells (Part 2)" makes up side two and is around 23 minutes long.
  • All the major record companies turned down the album. It was finally released on a new label called Virgin Records, and became the first album they issued. Virgin has since grown into a massive company, with an airline, record stores, and cell phone interests. Some of the artists who recorded for Virgin Records included The White Stripes, Moby, Aimee Mann, and The Black Crowes.
  • This was Oldfield's first album. It sold over 16 million copies.
  • The album hit #2 in the UK and #3 in the US. An edited version was released as the single and hit #7 in the US.
  • In 2003, Oldfield released a remastered version of the album to commemorate 30 years since it's release.
  • The UK release concluded with a rousing version of "The Sailor's Hornpipe" and a severely drunken Viv Stanshall babbling wondrously meaningless nonsense in an imitation of stuffy BBC announcers. (thanks, Ekristheh - Halath)
  • Oldfield told the Daily Mail March 14, 2008 that he'd been badgering Richard Branson and his business partner, Simon Draper of Virgin Records, to give him a break. He recalled: "They had been fobbing me off for a year. I was actually about to apply for citizenship of the USSR, where I thought I could become a state-funded musician. Then the phone run and it was Simon Draper asking me to come to dinner with Richard and his wife on their houseboat.
Eventually, he asked me what I needed to make an album. So I gave him a list of guitars, drums and pianos. Tubular Bells weren't actually on the list. But, as I arrived at the studio, I noticed they were bringing some out from the last session, and I grabbed them. I had a hunch they might be useful."
  • Tubular Bells was one of the benchmark albums of the Progressive Rock era, spending 279 weeks in the UK chart and selling 15 million copies worldwide.
  • Speaking to The Daily Telegraph in 2014, Oldfield attributed much of Tubular Bells' success to its unusual key signature. "Most music is in 4/4 time, but that curious little figure at the beginning is in 15/8. It's like a puzzle with a little bit missing," he said. "That's why it sticks in the brain. And that's why it worked so well as the soundtrack to The Exorcist - with that little bit missing everything is not quite right."

  • The first single from Rizzle Licks' third album, this is their first straightforward love song. They emphasize, however, that it is "Not a soppy one."
  • The song was first heard as the soundtrack to a promotional video for Evian mineral water. The Wimbledon-themed visual starred Maria Sharapova and saw the Rizzle Kicks duo vying for attention from their tennis star crush.
  • A second video was released, which was directed by the Lennox Brothers, who have also worked with Ellie Goulding and Kasabian. The clip follows the significantly shrunken Rizzle Kicks duo driving around in a miniature monster truck.
  • The soulful song was recorded with Ben Cullum, brother of Jamie. Jordan told The Sun: "I was filming a TV show and Harley used the time to go into the studio and start cresting some new stuff."

"'Tell Her' was part of the first batch and obviously it sounded wicked on demo, with the beat and his verse. Harley took the idea to Ben Cullum and it worked out well really."

  • This is the only traditional Gospel song ever to crossover and become a hit on the Pop charts. "Oh Happy Day" is a Protestant hymn that dates from 1755. It is included in the standard Baptist hymnal.
  • Edwin Hawkins was a pianist at Ephesian Church of God in Christ in Berkeley, California when he came up with the popular Latin/Soul version of this song in 1968. In an October 23, 2009 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, he explained that "Oh Happy Day" was one of eight arrangements he put together for the Northern California State Youth Choir, which was made up of 46 singers ages 17 to 25, and the plan was to sell an album of the songs to finance a trip to a church youth conference in Washington, D.C. The tracks were quickly recorded live in church on a two-track tape machine (industry standard at the time was eight-track), but the records weren't pressed in time for the trip. They did attend the conference, and the choir placed second in a singing competition, where they performed 2 of Hawkins' arrangements, but not "Oh Happy Day," which Hawkins said was "Not our favorite song."

500 copies of the album were made, and one of them found its way to the popular DJ Abe "Voco" Kesh at KSAN-FM in San Francisco. Other stations followed, and Buddah Records signed Hawkins to a record deal, rechristening the Northern California State Youth Choir "The Edwin Hawkins Singers" for their reissue of the album, which became a huge hit.
  • The female lead is Dorothy Morrison, who signed her own deal with Buddah Records when this became a hit.
  • This song was recorded for the Gospel market, and its secular success didn't go over well with everyone at the church: local officials of the denomination circulated a petition asking secular radio stations to stop airing the song. Hawkins had a different take. He told The Chronicle: "I think they thought they were doing the right thing. What confused me about it was they were teaching us all our lives that we were to take the message everywhere."
  • Dan Sorkin, who was a famous DJ on radio station KSFO in San Francisco, was a big supporter of this song and gave it a huge push on his morning show. He even interviewed Dorothy Morrison and Edwin Hawkins.
  • This won a Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance.
  • This is the song that the late Beatle George Harrison claimed he got the idea for "My Sweet Lord," not The Chiffons' "He's So Fine" which he was blamed for. (thanks, Jeff - Boston, MA)

  • This was written for the UK motion picture Mrs Brown's Boys: D'Movie. The comedy's creator, Brendan O'Carroll, is a good friend of The Script drummer Glen Power and the Irish actor called vocalist Danny O'Donoghue and guitarist Mark Sheehan in for a meeting. "He told us about the premise of the movie, about a florist in Moore Street. Mark's mum and granny were street traders, so straight away he had Mark reeled in," O'Donoghue recalled to The Daily Star.

"We ended up thinking, 'What is it about Ireland?' That gave us the idea of 'Hail, Rain And Sunshine' – that's their motto."
  • The song's Irish instrumentation influenced The Script's No Sound Without Silence album. "It was the first time we embraced the Irish sound," O'Donoghue said. "We went full-frontal fiddles and uilleanns in it. That started to bleed into our other music – there's so much Irish influence in the melodies."

Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now Lyrics

Looking in your eyes I see a paradise
    This world that I've found
Is too good to be true
    Standing here beside you
Want so much to give you
This love in my heart that I'm feeling for you

Let 'em say we're crazy, I don't care about that
Put your hand in my hand baby
    Don't ever look back
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby we can make it if we're heart to heart

And we can build this dream together
    Standing strong forever
    Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now
And if this world runs out of lovers
    We'll still have each other
    Nothing's gonna stop us
    Nothing's gonna stop us now

I'm so glad I found you
    I'm not gonna lose you
Whatever it takes I will stay here with you
Take it to the good times
See it through the bad times
Whatever it takes is what I'm gonna do

Let 'em say we're crazy, what do they know
Put your arms around me baby
    Don't ever let go
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby we can make it if we're heart to heart

And we can build this dream together
    Standing strong forever
    Nothing's gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers
    We'll still have each other
    Nothing's gonna stop us
    Nothing's gonna stop us

Ooh, all that I need is you
    All that I ever need
And all that I want to do
Is hold you forever, ever and ever, hey

And we can build this dream together
    Standing strong forever
    Nothing's gonna stop us now
And if this world runs out of lovers
    We'll still have each other
    Nothing's gonna stop us
    Nothing's gonna stop us, whoa
Nothing's gonna stop us now, oh no

Hey baby, I know, hey baby

  • This was the third #1 single for Starship (after "We Built This City" and "Sara"), but the only members of the group who actually participated in the recording of the song were Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas. Producer Narada Michael Walden preferred to use his veteran session players to provide the instrumental backing. Narada was one of the hottest producers of the time, coming off hits for Whitney Houston "How Will I Know" and Aretha Franklin "Freeway of Love." He told us: "I always dug that '60s thing with Grace Slick. She's a very outspoken women. We're all from the Bay Area, so it's like family. I actually played the drums when I laid the track out. I got Grace to come in, flipped it around so instead of the low part, she wound up singing the highest part. I gave her the highest part and she just killed it. That's when I realized it could be a smash. And when I got happy in the studio, she got happy."
  • Starship were originally called Jefferson Airplane, then Jefferson Starship, and then Starship. "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" was the biggest hit for any version of the group, spending two weeks at #1 in the US and four weeks at #1 in the UK.
  • This song had enormous hit potential. It was written by Diane Warren and Albert Hammond. For Warren, it was her first #1, but she had already written hits for Laura Branigan ("Solitaire") and DeBarge ("Rhythm Of The Night"). Hammond had established himself with "When I Need You" for Leo Sayer and his solo hit "It Never Rains In Southern California." The producer Narada Michael Walden and the group Starship were very reliable hitmakers, and the song got lots of promotion from being featured in the movie Mannequin, which starred Andrew McCarthy (an original Brat Pack member) and Kim Cattrall (who played Samantha Jones in Sex And The City).
  • Michael Gottleib, who directed the movie Mannequin, commissioned songwriters Albert Hammond and Diane Warren to write this song for the wedding scene of the film and sent them a script for the movie. Hammond explained in a 1992 BBC Radio interview, "I had lived with my girlfriend Claudia for seven years. I had finally gotten divorced from my other marriage and was thinking of writing a song for me to sing and make a demo for our wedding, so I combined the two. What we thought of, what I said to Diane was, 'it's almost like they've stopped me from marrying this woman for seven years, and they haven't succeeded. They're not gonna stop me doing it.' That's when suddenly Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now came up."
  • The song returned to the UK singles chart in September 2013 after featuring in TalkTalk TV's advertising campaign. The commercial featured an animated astronaut and ballerina settling down for a date night watching TalkTalk television.

Don't know if I should quite sing this song
Don't know if it maybe might be wrong
But then again it maybe might be right
To tell you 'bout the bullet and the red light

You know I'm not from this place
I'm from a different time, different space
    And it's real uncomfortable
To be stuck somewhere you just don't belong

But I got 8 Good Reasons to stick around
8 good reasons, well maybe nine now

I had a dream one night
About a bullet and a red light
    You know it felt alright
You know it actually felt quite nice

    If I could have gone
    Without it hurting anyone
Like a child, I would have found me mum
Like a bird I would have been flown

You know I don't much like life
I don't mind admitting that it ain't right
You know I love to make music
But my head got wrecked by the business

    Everybody wanting something from me
They rarely ever wanna just know me
I became the stranger no one sees
Cut glass I've crawled upon my knees

But I got 8 good reasons to stick around
8 good reasons, well maybe nine now

I had a dream one night
About a bullet and a red light
    You know it felt alright
You know it actually felt quite nice

  • This song finds O'Connor snarling about the music industry:

You know I love to make music
But my head got wrecked by the business

She told The Observer: "It sounds corny but the establishment doesn't have a vested interest in any of us waking up out of what Bob Marley called mental slavery and actually trying to make the world a better place. Nor does it have an interest in the young people of this world trying to make it a better place."

"Young people's heroes are musicians, so if you want to keep the establishment going you have to make sure that young people are controlled. One way to do that is to put people on the radio who aren't saying anything, not doing anything that might rattle the system."

    Alright

I couldn't stop movin' when it first took hold
It was a warm spring night at the old town hall
There was a group called 'The Jokers', they were layin' it down
Doncha know I'm never gonna lose that funky sound?

    Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo
    Lawdy mama, light my fuse
    Rock and roll, hoochie koo
Truck on out and spread the news

'Squitas start buzzin' 'bout this time of year
I'm goin' 'round back, said she'd meet me there
We were rollin' in the grass grows behind the barn
Well, my ears started ringin' like a fire alarm

    Rock and roll, hoochie koo
    Lawdy mama, light my fuse
    Rock and roll, hoochie koo
Truck on out and spread the news

Yeah, somebody said keep on rocking
    That's right

I hope ya'll know what I'm talkin' about
The way they wiggled that thing, really knocks me out
Gettin' high all the time, hope you all are too
Come on a little closer, gonna do it to you

    Rock and roll, hoochie koo
    Lawdy mama, light my fuse
    Rock and roll, hoochie koo
Truck on out and spread the news

    Rock and roll, hoochie koo
    Lawdy mama, light my fuse
    Rock and roll, hoochie koo
Truck on out and spread the news

Then I'm tired of payin' the dues

    It doesn't mean you're weak
Or that you got low self-esteem
We all got hearts that forget why they beat
We are brilliant, we are unique
    But we forget so effortlessly

And when you're questioning your worth in the way that we all do
And your version of amnesia starts to seep on through
And you know that you are great but you can't remember why
I will be there by your side

I will Remind You, I will remind you
I will be, I'll be your memory
I will remind you, I will remind you
All you need is someone else to see
    I will remind you

We get a little bit lost like ships at sea
We don't remember right where we're supposed to be

And when you're questioning your worth in the way that we all do
And your version of amnesia starts to seep on through
And you know that you are great but you can't remember why
I will be there by your side

I will remind you, I will remind you
I will be, I'll be your memory
I will remind you, I will remind you

Out on the streets, that's where we'll meet
You make the night, I always cross the line
    Tightened our belts, abuse ourselves
Get in our way, we'll put you on your shelf

You'd put an arrow through my heart

With love we'll find a way just give it time
    Round and round
    What comes around goes around
    I'll tell you why

    Dig

Lookin' at you, lookin' at me
The way you move, you know it's easy to see
The neon light's on me tonight
I've got a way, we're gonna prove it tonight
    Like Romeo to Juliet
Time and time, I'm gonna make you mine
I've had enough, we've had enough

  • "Round and Round" was Ratt's biggest hit, and one of only two Top 40 hits for the group in the US (the other was "Lay It Down," which reached #40 in 1985). The song was written by the group's lead singer Stephen Pearcy and their guitarists Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini. It finds Pearcy singing about a woman who broke his heart. The singer believes, however, that things will work out in the end, as what comes around goes around.
  • A girl mutates from human form to rodent form in the video, which features an unlikely cameo: Milton Berle's nephew was the band's manager (Marshall Berle), and he got Milton to appear in the video (free of charge) dressed as a woman.

In the book MTV Ruled the World - The Early Years of Music Video, Warren DeMartini confides the thrill of doing this video: "Milton Berle was the first icon I think any of us had ever met. It was a really cool thing. He was really the first guy to ever have a variety show on TV, and he was a cool person to listen to, because he made his career the same way that he knew that we were going to, which is to get on the road. Because prior to TV, it was just Vaudeville. He was telling us stories and talking about those days, when him and other comedians of the period would get on a train, travel all night, you know, middle America. Raining, cold, get into a hotel, get up in the morning, set it all up, do the show, and then move on. What he described was great, but it was tough."
  • The vixen in the video is Lisa Dean, who a few years later played the title-girl in Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana clip.
  • Out Of The Cellar was Ratt's first full-length album, and it sold over 3 million copies. They are best-known for this song, but they developed an ardent fan base and racked up impressive sales: their next three albums each sold over a million copies. The group took some time off in the '90s, but has recorded and performed sporadically since. In 2002, their original guitarist Robbin Crosby, while diagnosed HIV positive, died of a heroin overdose - not AIDS as was sometimes reported. He also had significant health issues stemming from pancreatic failure which caused rapid weight gain.

  • Swedish-American actress and singer Ann-Margret began recording for RCA Victor in 1961. Initially billed as a female version of Elvis Presley, she scored her only Top 20 Pop hit with this bluesy, rocking number from her second album, On the Way Up. The song was produced by Chet Atkins and featured Elvis' backup singers, the Jordanaires.
  • This was notable for an early example of fuzz guitar played by studio guitarist legend Billy Strange via a handmade pedal. Strange would go on to do session work for the likes of Elvis, Phil Spector and the Beach Boys.
  • The song was later covered live by The Beatles and recorded during a performance at the BBC with lead vocals by John Lennon. It can be heard on their 1994 compilation album Live at the BBC.
  • American rockers Spoon included a cover of this song on their 2014 album They Want My Soul. Spoon lead singer Britt Daniel explained to HungerTV how this cover came about: "There's this website called Rookie... They asked me to contribute to their song of the month. There was a theme to it, which was 'girl groups' – so the idea was to do a cover. I guess somebody at Rookie knew I was a fan of '60s girls groups. They gave me several suggestions – most of which I didn't know, so I just sat down and recorded into a little digital hand held thing the quickie versions of me playing these songs on acoustic guitar. The one that sounded the best was 'I Don't Understand' by Ann-Margret. I told Jim [Eno, drummer] 'Let's just do this quickie recording for Rookie,' and we did it on our own and used a couple of mikes and did it very quickly. But once I put a few over dubs on it I just thought this is too good for Rookie – I'm gonna keep this one! I think it's a good one. I really enjoyed it; it's a bit different. I remember thinking when I first sang it, 'Okay I can get this, it sounds to me like something John Lennon would like.' That kind of lower vocal, almost like a soul and darker vocal – not a happy vocal. Later I found out that The Beatles did cover that song in fact – so it was pretty weird! It felt like I'd made a connection with John Lennon somehow – beyond the grave…" (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

Heard It On The X Lyrics

    Do you remember
    Back in nineteen sixty-six?
    Country Jesus, hillbilly blues,
That's where I learned my licks.
Oh, from coast to coast and line to line
    In every county there,
I'm talkin' 'bout that outlaw X
    Is cuttin' through the air.

    Anywhere, y'all,
    Everywhere, y'all,
I heard it, I heard it,
I Heard It On The X.

We can all thank Doctor be
    Who stepped across the line.
With lots of watts he took control,
The first one of its kind.
    So listen to your radio
    Most each and every night
'cause if you don't I'm sure you won't
    Get to feeling right.

    Anywhere, y'all,
    Everywhere, y'all,
I heard it, I heard it,
I heard it on the X.

Heard It On The X Song Chart
  • This song is a tribute to the "Border Blaster" radio stations in Mexico, specifically the two that were run by the famous disc jockey Wolfman Jack, XERF in Via Acuna, (near Del Rio, Texas), and XERB, (in Rosarito Beach near Tijuana). Mexican radio stations did not have to adhere to the power limits of US stations, which gave them the ability to pump their signal well into the the States. (thanks, Ken - Boise, ID)
  • Billy Gibbons explained in a 1985 interview with Spin magazine: "All Mexican stations' call letters begin with X. The X stations used to be heard everywhere because of their enormous power. The Mexican government granted licenses with no wattage ceiling. The US, back in the '20s, established 50,000 watts as the maximum. WLS in Chicago is 50,000 watts, and you can hear it like a police call in Houston. I'm sure 500,000 watts you can pick up here in Canada. You can probably pick up XERF. It was just outrageous. You could pick it up everywhere and we'd go. And it would bury everything else. KDRC in Houston was on a close frequency, and they would get stomped on. They had to move. XERF is 1570 on the dial. I think that remains the most powerful station."

Dusty Hill added: "They'll sell segments to anybody. There are a lot of preachers on there. I heard them one time selling autographed prayer cloths. They were to put on your radio when you're listening to these programs. But this one was autographed by Jesus himself. Then you'd hear a 15-minute country western show. Then there'd be a blues show. You could just buy your slot and do whatever. They didn't have a whole lot of restrictions."

Asked if ZZ Top was ever played "on the X," Gibbons said: "We did, in fact. They do not have a pop music playlist, but the song was brought to attention of the station owner, who, it turns out, is an attorney in Del Rio who considers the station his favorite toy. He decided to have a 15-minute pop music segment, and we did get played on XERF and then on XERB in Rosarita. They also have XROC in Juarez. So it went full circle. We heard 'I Heard It in the X' on the X."
  • Members of ZZ Top share the same influences, which helped forge their sound. The first line of this song is a nod to those influences, which they heard on the border blaster stations:

    Where We Left Off Lyrics

Well if we had the words in times like these
    We wouldn't have to stare
We'd both know what to say
And how to pray the things to do to save the day
    Some will call it sacrifice
They'll look at this and never see
The beauty or how much it means
The blood that runs inside of me

    I know you understand
That there's no map for this, no plan

And the way we say goodbye
Is not that way that anyone would do
Like a wave out on the ocean
I will always come right back to you
    I could blink
    Not a moment is gone
We'll pick up Where We Left Off

It's like the world is draped in a camouflage
And sometimes never what it seems
    Everyone's got different things
They hide behind or try to be
But the things I carry with me
All remind me who I am
When so much of me is not with me
What matters most is what I leave

    Behind for you to keep
Yeah, so smile when you think of me

And though the way we say goodbye
Is not that way that anyone would do
Like a wave out on the ocean
I will always come right back to you
    I could blink
And not a moment is gone
Yeah we'll pick up where we left off

    Oooh
    Oh

Oh the way we say goodbye
Is not the way that anyone would do
Like a wave out on the ocean
I will always come right back to you
Nothing changed, nothing fades, nothing lost
And we pick up where we left off.

    Oooh
    No
    Oh
    No
    Oooh
    Oooh

  • This was written by Hunter Hayes and Barry Dean (Little Big Town's "Pontoon") for the movie Act of Valor. Dean recalled to American Songwriter magazine: "One of my best friends as a kid, grew up to be a squadron commander for special forces, drones. He's a real hero; literally flew night vision helicopters. I got the opportunity to help Hunter write this song for this movie honoring Navy Seals and that allowed me to really express how much I thought of my friend and his wife, it meant so much to be able to do that through this song."
