Smiler with Knife

This mostly acoustic tune finds Morrissey singing of a deeply wounded, tortured guy begging some former lover to "press the blade against my skin." Producer Joe Chiccarelli recalled to Radio.com : "We used an acoustic piano that's been distorted, and there's also some backwards piano fills that have been treated through a guitar amp. So, some of the sounds that sound like guitar on that song is actually piano."

The title phrase originates from Chaucer's The Knights Tale:

Ain't Nobody

This was the last chart single for the group before lead singer Chaka Khan (born Yvette Stevens) left for a solo career. On this track, she sings about a man who makes her feel so good, that no other can come close.

Producer Quincy Jones wanted this for Michael Jackson's Thriller album, and almost got it. Rufus keyboardist David Wolinski wrote the song. The group didn't like it but recorded it anyway. It was released as a single when Wolinski threatened to pull it off the album and give it to Jackson and Jones. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for all above)

When Rufus was being formed, they rejected guitarist Roger Linn because he didn't sing, but this was one of the first songs ever written to the beat of Roger's invention - the LM-1 Drum, the world's first programmable, sampled-sound drum machine. In 1989 a remixed version by Frankie Knuckles reached #6 in the UK.

In 1997 rapper LL Cool J topped the UK charts (#46 in US) with his interpolation of the song. It became a hit after being featured in the movie Beavis And Butthead Do America.

In 2003 British pop band Liberty X reached #3 in the UK with "Be Nobody," a merging of the lyrics from "Ain't Nobody" and the music from Human League's "Being Boiled."

12 year old British singer Jasmine Thompson recorded a cover in 2013 after she was discovered singing on YouTube. Her version was featured in a TV commercial for Sainsbury's and charted in the Top 40 of the UK singles chart.

Mountjoy

On this somber tune, Morrissey explores the Dublin prison where Republican writer Brendan Behan did time for the attempted murder of two Irish detectives. Behan set his most famous play, The Quare Fellow, in Mountjoy jail.

Producer Joe Chiccarelli told Radio.com that the drums were programmed "to sound like the metal of a prison door, to evoke the concrete, the unhappy inmates."

Disco Lady

Written by Don Davis, Harvey Scales and Lee Vance, this song was originally titled "Disco Baby." Scales brought the song to Davis, who was Taylor's producer, Davis came up with new lyrics inspired by an African dancer he saw in Spain who would draw all eyes to her when she started dancing. The Impressions had a song called "Gypsy Woman," and Davis used those themes to create his song - instead of a Gypsy Woman, he had a Disco Lady.

Johnnie Taylor, nicknamed the "Soul Philosopher," recorded for Stax Records until the label imploded in 1975. Moving to Columbia, his first release was this massive Disco hit, which finds Taylor singing the praises of a lady on the dancefloor. Members of George Clinton's crew, including Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell, played on the track, and Telma Hopkins - of "Shut Your Mouth!" fame - sang backup. It was recorded at United Sound Studios in Detroit, where Davis usually worked.

The Platinum award was instituted in 1976 by the RIAA for albums selling one million units and singles selling two million units (in 1989 they lowered the requirements for singles so Gold was 500,000 units and Platinum was a million). This was the first single to ever be certified platinum and it's claimed that to celebrate his success, Taylor took a bath in Dom Perignon champagne.

Though there had previously been several disco songs that had reached #1, this was the first Hot 100 chart-topper with the word "disco" in its title. "A lot of people thought it was disco," mused Taylor. "But it was not a disco tune. We were just talking about disco."

This song was a huge hit on both the Pop and R&B charts, which it climbed simultaneously. It spent 4 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 and 6 weeks at the top of the R&B chart.

Breaking Skin

Vocalist Elias Soriano explained the meaning behind this song. "It's about addiction, whether it be food, drugs, sex, lying, or anything, that tends to turn into an itch," he said. "You can't stop scratching it so you break skin. Then, you're bleeding. You need to get help at that point and deal with it."

Drummer Robb Rivera commented this was a different kind of song for Nonpoint. "There's a lot of melody, but it's still so heavy," he said. "That heaviness has always been in the back of our minds. It's a natural direction for us. Most bands soften their sound as they go on. We get more aggressive and heavy. That's what Nonpoint does best."

Endless Sleeper

The opening track to Raveonettes' Pe'ahi album, the song is about the band's Sune Rose Wagner's near drowning in 2008. He explained to Q magazine: "The song begins by retelling the horrific story of a near-drowning surfing incident I had in Hawaii six years ago and how sometimes young lives have to take risks in order to exist. "

"This song starts out the same way as The Doors debut album," Wagner added. "The Doors are the ultimate West Coast band and an endless source of inspiration so it's only fitting we started off Pe'Ahi by paying tribute to them."

The album title refers to a place on the north shore of the island of Maui in Hawaii, which is a popular surfing spot. Speaking about the record's surf inspiration to Drowned in Sound , Sune Rose Wagner commented: "Musically there's a lot of surf guitar sounds in there. But used in very different ways to the traditional surf record sound," he said. "There's also a lot of references to surf language and beaches in the lyrics but again used in a very different context. It was a challenge to try and channel some of the inspiration I found - especially the surf history of Southern California - but not in an obvious way."

Seasons in the Sun

Originally "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man"), this was written and performed in French by the Belgian poet-composer Jacques Brel in 1961. The American poet Rod McKuen translated the lyrics to English, and in 1964 The Kingston Trio released the first English-language version of the song. This is the version Terry Jacks heard, which became the basis for his rendition.

In our interview with Terry Jacks , he said that after his version was released, he had dinner in Brussels with Jacques Brel, who told him about writing the song. "It was about an old man who was dying of a broken heart because his best friend was screwing his wife," Jacks said. "He wrote this in a whorehouse in Tangiers, and the words were quite different. The song originally he used to do on stage and it was in a march form, like, 'Bom ba DUM, bom ba DUM.' Quite a different thing. This old man was dying of a broken heart and he was saying goodbye to his priest and his best friend and his wife, who cheated on him. Her name was Francoise, and it went, 'Adieu, Francoise, my trusted wife, without you I'd have had a lonely life. You cheated lots of times but then I forgave you in the end, though your lover was my friend.'"

The original version by Jacques Brel is rather macabre, but Jacks had an earnest inspiration for his reworking of the song: his good friend developed leukemia, and was given just six months to live. "He was gone in four months," Jacks told us. "He was a very good friend of mine, one of my best friends, and he said I was the first one that he told. I remembered this song of an old man dying of a broken heart, and I liked some of the melody and there was something there. I rewrote the song about him."

Before releasing this song, Terry Jacks had considerable success in his native Canada as half of the duo The Poppy Family with his wife, Susan. He was friends with The Beach Boys, who asked him to produce a song for them - something Jacks was honored to do. Terry played them his arrangement of "Seasons in the Sun" and suggested they record it, since he thought it would sound great with their harmonies and with Carl Wilson singing lead.

Terry flew to Brian Wilson's house and they began working on the song. Wilson had always been their producer, and could spend months working on a song if he wanted to perfect it. These were Terry's sessions, but Brian tried to take over.

"The thing never got finished," Jacks said in our interview. "Brian wanted to get hold of the tape and add some things, and the engineer would have to take the tape home at night so that Brian wouldn't get hold of it. This went on and on, and I was almost having a nervous breakdown because I would put so much energy into this thing and the stress was really getting me. So I said, 'I'm not going to be able to finish this. I can't get you guys all in here together.' So it never got completed."

The sessions weren't a complete wash for Jacks, however. He worked with Al Jardine on the backing vocals and came up with an arrangement he would use when he recorded the song himself.

In 1973, the song was released as Jacks' second single ("Concrete Sea" was his first), and it was a huge hit, going to #1 in America for three weeks and also topping the UK chart.

Terry released this on his own label, Goldfish Records, and was amazed when it became the largest-selling single in Canadian history: more than 285,000 copies sold in a matter of weeks. Bell Records vice president Dave Carrico heard the record, flew to Vancouver, and snapped up the American rights. Bell released the song in the US, and on February 14, 1974, it earned its first RIAA Gold Award for sales of over a million copies. Eventually, it sold more than three million copies in the United States alone. Worldwide, the figure is over six million.

"Seasons in the Sun" is the story of a dying man, bidding farewell to loved ones who have shared his life. Shortly before Terry's recording came out, Jacques Brel retired, at the peak of his popularity. Fans around the world were stunned, but the composer would give no reason. Finally, the truth was revealed: after a quiet, six-year battle against cancer, Brel succumbed to the disease and died on October 9, 1978.

With the money he made from this song, Jacks purchased a boat, which he christened "Seasons in the Sun." He began sailing up and down the west coast of Alaska and Canada, and had some revelations along the way. "I started to realize that this wasn't made by a blob," he told us. "This was made by God."

Terry became a Christian and began a quest to protect nature. He gave up music and became an environmental activist, fighting the Canadian paper mills who he accused of dumping toxins and destroying forests. He made some films on the subject, including The Faceless Ones and The Warmth of Love: The 4 Seasons of Sophie Thomas, maintaining a modest lifestyle in Canada financed by his musical achievements.

For Terry, becoming an environmentalist was not just a moral imperative, but a way of dealing with the fallout from this song, which came to define his career. "I got to be known as an environmentalist, which was the only thing that ever got rid of my label," he said. "I was 'Seasons in the Sun' before that."

Rod McKuen, who translated the lyrics, is the credited writer on the song along with Jacques Brel. Terry Jacks made some significant musical changes and wrote an entirely different last verse, but didn't get a songwriter credit, since he never claimed one. Jacks says he didn't think of it at the time, and never anticipated the song becoming a royalty-generating hit.

Jacks' previous group, The Poppy Family, had a #2 Hot 100 hit with "Which Way You Goin' Billy?" in 1970, and also made #29 with "That's Where I Went Wrong" (both songs were written by Jacks). After "Seasons in the Sun" hit, he recorded anther Jacques Brel song with an English translation by Rod McKuen: "If You Go Away." This one has the the French title "Ne me quite pas," which literally translates as "Don't Leave Me." It hit #68 in the US.

A young David Foster played a bit of piano and did some engineering on this song. Foster, a fellow Canadian, has contributed to numerous hits as a songwriter, producer and musician. A sampling of his credits:

- Writing and recording the original version of "Mornin'."

- Co-writing the Chicago hit "You're the Inspiration."

Foster's specific contributions to "Seasons in the Sun" are the piano arpeggio after the "flowers everywhere" line, and doubling the bass after the "Goodbye papa, please pray for me" line.

The B-side of the single was a song titled "Put the Bone In," which described a woman in a butcher shop, apparently begging the butcher to "put the bone in" for her because "her doggy had been hit by a car." In the UK, Westlife had the 1999 Christmas #1 with their Double-A-side of "I Have A Dream" and their cover of this song. "I Have A Dream" was originally a #2 hit for Abba in 1979. When this topped the UK chart, Westlife became the first act since Elvis Presley in 1962 to have 4 #1s in the same year.

Nirvana did a version of this song, but it didn't appear until 2004 on the With The Lights Out out boxed set. (thanks, Chris - Dracut, MA)

Terry's talents are in songwriting, production and arrangements - he doesn't consider himself a very good singer, and was never known for his vocal talents. He started singing his own material as a means of expression: when he wrote songs for The Poppy Family, he had to change the gender because they were sung by his wife, Susan.

Despite his perceived deficiencies when it comes to singing, Terry won the Juno award (the Canadian Grammys) for Male Vocalist of the Year in 1974. This song also won for Contemporary Single of the Year and Pop Music Single of the Year, and Best Selling Single.

Callum Burrows is an English singer-songwriter who performs under the name of Saint Raymond. He hails from Nottingham, the same home town as Jake Bugg, and has been compared a lot to the "Lightning Bolt" singer.

Burrows explained the inspiration behind this song to MTV UK: "Like a lot of my songs, this one was written as an upbeat festival tune," he said. "I like doing that when writing, not only thinking about the actual meaning of the song, but also thinking about the reaction of a crowd to it. I think that's really important."

The music video, directed by Niall O'Brien, was shot in California, about 50 miles from Death Valley, where the promo's frustrated characters throw themselves off enormous sand dunes. O'Brien also directed videos for Breton's "15 Minutes" in 2014 and King Midas Sound's "Lost" in 2010.

People Got to Be Free

This was written in reaction to the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. The song obtained a double meaning when Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated before the single was released.

Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records briefly blocked the single's release as he thought the Rascals' career would be hurt by a political record. He was partly right: although "People Got to Be Free" was the group's biggest hit (#1 for five weeks), it was also their last Top Ten single.

This was the third #1 hit for the group (after "Good Lovin'" and "Groovin'"), but the first under their original name. In 1966-67 all their singles were credited to the "Young Rascals," a name imposed upon them by Atlantic Records to avoid confusion with the Harmonica Rascals.

Their followup single, the #24 "A Ray of Hope," was written for the Kennedy family after RFK's death and prompted a thank-you letter from the fallen senator's little brother, Ted. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for all above)

I Can See Clearly Now

This is not a song about suicide, as has been hypothesized. It is a song of hope and courage for individuals who have experienced adversity in their lives but have overcome it. (thanks, Robert - Trumbull, CT)

Johnny Nash is a Texas singer/songwriter who recorded reggae-influenced music. In 1967 he went to Jamaica and recorded his song "Hold Me Tight" and a cover of Sam Cooke's "Cupid" with a local rhythm section. Both songs became hits in Jamaica, and over the next two years also charted in England and the United States. By 1972, "Cecilia" and "Mother And Child Reunion" found some success in the States incorporating reggae rhythms, and Nash followed that trend with "I Can See Clearly Now."

Nash had legitimate reggae credentials: Bob Marley (before he became crazy famous) was an assistant producer and session player on the album, and also wrote three of the songs, including "Stir It Up," which became Nash's next - and final - hit.

A cover version by Jimmy Cliff (for a time, a bigger reggae star than Bob Marley) went to #18 in the US in 1994. His version was used in the John Candy movie Cool Runnings, about the Jamaican bobsled team.

Nash wrote this song himself. He recorded it in London with members of The Average White Band, who in 1974 had a hit of their own with "Pick Up The Pieces."

This was #1 in the US for four weeks late in 1972.

This was featured in the opening sequence of the 1997 John Cusack film Grosse Pointe Blank. It was also used in the movie Themla And Louise. (thanks, Kristy - La Porte City, IA)
