I Only Want to Be With You Lyrics

I don't know what it is that makes me love you so
I only know I never want to let you go
'Cause you started something, can't you see
That ever since we met you've had a hold on me
I happens to be true, I Only Want to Be With You

It doesn't matter where you go or what you do
I want to spend each moment of the day with you
Look what has happened with just one kiss
I never knew that I could be in love like this
It's crazy but it's true, I only want to be with you

You stopped and smiled at me
Asked me if I'd care to dance
I fell into your open arms
I didn't stand a chance

Now, listen, honey, I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as we're together, honey, I don't care
'Cause you started something, can't you see
That ever since we met you've had a hold on me
No matter what you do, I only want to be with you

You stopped and smiled at me
Asked me if I'd care to dance
I fell into your open arms
I didn't stand a chance

Now hear me darling, I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as we're together, honey, I don't care
'Cause you started something, can't you see
That ever since we met you've had a hold on me
No matter what you do, I only want to be with you
I said, no matter, no matter what you do, I only want to be with you

I Only Want to Be With You
  • This was Springfield's first single as a solo artist - she was previously a member of The Springfields with her brother Tom - the group had 5 Top-10 hits in the UK and one in the US ("Silver Threads and Golden Needles") before Dusty's departure. The song launched Dusty's Hall of Fame career, and became the first hit by a British artist since The Beatles started their run. Springfield was 24 when the song was released.
  • This song is about a girl who has finally found the guy of her dreams - or at least she thinks so. It's very much a teenage crush song in the same vein as many of the girl group songs Springfield loved. When she came to America and began her solo career, Dusty took more of a Pop/R&B direction inspired by groups like The Shirelles and The Crystals.
  • Springfield performed this on the first ever episode of the British TV show Top Of The Pops on January 1, 1964. The Rolling Stones, The Dave Clark Five and The Hollies also performed on that show. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • A 1989 cover version of this was the last hit for British singer Samantha Fox, who rose to stardom after appearing topless in a British newspaper and scoring hits with "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)," "Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)," and "I Wanna have Some Fun." Her version reached #35.
  • The Bay City Rollers released a version in December 1976 that reached #12 in the US. The song was also a #4 hit in the UK for The Tourists, who were the group Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were in before they formed Eurythmics.
  • This was written by Mike Hawker and Ivor Raymonde, who also wrote Springfield's song "Stay Awhile." Hawker also wrote "Walking Back to Happiness" for Helen Shapiro.
  • Springfield performed this song on the first season of the British TV series Ready Steady Go! twice in 1963. She handled hosting duties on some early episodes of the show, and even interviewed The Beatles on the program.
  • Vic Flick, who performed on many of the James Bond themes, played guitar on this track. He told us: "Dusty was always good to work with. She knew what she wanted, both from the musicians and from herself. I first met her in 1959 when she was part of a girl trio, the Lana Sisters. I did a couple of arrangements for them to use on the live show we were doing. I had just started with John Barry Seven and everything was happening at once. Good days."

    Architecture of Aggression Lyrics

    Born from the dark
In the black cloak of night
    To envelop its prey below
    Deliver to the light
    To eliminate your enemy
    Hit them in their sleep
And when all is won and lost
The spoils of wars are yours to keep

Great nations built from the bones of the dead
With mud and straw, blood and sweat
You know your worth when your enemies
    Praise your Architecture of Aggression

    Praise your architecture of aggression
    Ensuing power vacuum
    A toppled leader dies
His body fuels the power fire
And the flames rise to the sky
One side of his face a kiss
    The other genocide
Time to pay with your ass
    A worldwide suicide

Great nations built from the bones of the dead
With mud and straw, blood and sweat
You know your worth when your enemies
    Praise your architecture of aggression

    Architecture of Aggression
  • Frontman Dave Mustaine, who wrote the song with Megadeth bass player David Ellefson, explained the meaning of the song's title: "That was inspired by a book actually titled The Architecture Of Aggression, about the underground facilities used during the Nazi reign of terror. Many people have died in the architecture of a lot of countries. Yet it's just the leaders who are noted as so great in the struggle. The bible talks about the brick makers who stomped the mud and straw and would be left to die in the mud pits. Ultimately, the bricks would be made out of their sweat and blood."
  • This song was inspired by the massive bombing of Iraq on January 16, 1991 that initiated Operation Desert Storm. The sound samples at the end of the song are the voices of CNN correspondents (Peter Arnett and Bernard Shaw) in Baghdad, Iraq, describing what they saw that night.
  • Guitarist Marty Friedman called this song his favorite tune on the Countdown to Extinction album: "This also experienced the editing knife in pre-production and was shortened considerably. One of my fave vocals by Dave and also a real solid jammin' track." (thanks, Kevin - Sandy, UT, for above 3)

One Nation Under A Groove Lyrics

    One Nation Under A Groove
  • This was inspired by an event at the United Nations. Early one morning, bandleader George Clinton was outside the UN headquarters as he and two girlfriends were shooting film for a Parliament/Funkadelic movie that was never finished. P-Funk's signature prop, the Mothership, was landing as a UN staffer started to raise the flags of the member nations. One of Clinton's friends described it as "one nation under a groove." (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL)
  • George Clinton had the title in mind 2 years before the band recorded the song. He didn't have any lyrics - he came up with those in the studio.
  • This was used in the 1991 movie Young Soul Rebels. The film takes place during The Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, over a year before this was recorded. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for above 2)

    Redeemer of Souls Lyrics

    Time to settle the score
He's loaded to feel their remorse
    Steadfast strong that's for sure
The deal of his life takes its course
    No giving in
    They don't understand
They get to give up and to meet his demands

    Count down coming your way
    He's the last to obey
    Watch him seizing the day
    Redeemer Redeemer of Souls

    There's no holding him back
    The ransom announces his deeds
    He's not cutting you slack
Just taking what ever he needs
    Diamonds for eyes
    As he begins
On that two wheeler from hell on the wind

    Now he's setting the tune
They know the stare down is soon
    Vengeance comes at high noon
    Redeemer redeemer of souls

    On the skyline
    The stranger draws near
Feel the heat and he's shaking with fear

    On the skyline

    Redeemer of Souls
  • Judas Priest released their first album (Rocka Rolla) in 1974. Forty years later, they issued their seventeenth studio album, Redeemer of Souls, taking care to retain their classic sound on the title track. "It's instantly Judas Priest as soon as it comes in, guitarist Richie Faulkner told us. "It's very instant and very direct. It's simple, but it's what you'd expect from a Judas Priest song. It was the first song that got put out to the public just to let you know that Priest is back and this is what it's about, really."
  • Lead singer Rob Halford created a character for this song, which can be seen on the album cover. "It's another song of empowerment for me in the lyrical message," he told us. "It's got the little bit of the fantasy element, creating a figure, this redeemer of souls.

What is he? He's not a destructive guy, he's coming to bring that redemption with Metal, and I think that's a very iconic type of representation for Judas Priest."
  • There is on Old West theme on this track that runs concurrently with the extraterrestrial concept. This makes some sense when you consider where Halford found inspiration for the lyric: the 2011 movie Cowboys & Aliens.

Keeping with the Old West motif, we hear about a showdown at "high noon." Guitarist Glenn Tipton said: "It's a very natural Judas Priest song. And I love the high noon reference, as well, which to me typifies that god, half-molten metal, half-human walking down some sort of deserted cowboy town with tumbleweeds and dust and dirt. That's the picture it conjures up for me." (Here's our full interview with Judas Priest .)
  • Redeemer of Souls debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200 album chart, the British band's first Top 10 disc. Judas Priest's previous highest charting LP was 2008's Nostradamus, which peaked at #11.

Let me make your broken heart like new
Oh, my lonely girl, lonely girl
Don't you know this lonely boy loves you

Ever since he broke your heart you seem so lost
Each time you pass my way
How I long to take your hand
And say don't cry, I'll kiss your tears away

Hey there lonely girl, lonely girl
Let me make your broken heart like new
Oh my lonely girl, lonely girl

You think that only his two lips can kiss your lips
And make your heart stand still
But once you're in my arms you'll see

  • A track from Framing Hanley's second album, this song follows a common theme in the band's music: relationships that are detrimental to one or both parties. In our interview with lead singer Kenneth Nixon , he said of this song: "It's about really putting yourself in a situation that's conducive to your health and overall well-being all for the point of making another person happy instead of yourself."

    Starting All Over Again Lyrics

Starting All Over Again is gonna be rough, so rough
    But we're gonna make it
Starting all over as friends is gonna be rough, on us
    But we gotta face it

We lost what we had, that's why it hurt so bad.
It set us back a thousand years.
We're gonna make it up, though it's gonna be rough
To erase all the hurt and tears
Starting all over again is gonna be hard
But I pray that the love will help us make it
Starting all over again is gonna be slow
But we both know that we can make it

We gotta take life as it comes
And never worry about who's right or wrong
    It's an uphill climb
    To the finish line
We're gonna try to make it
    One more time

Starting all over again is gonna be rough, so rough
    But we're gonna make it
Starting all over as friends is gonna be tough, on us
    But we gotta face it

Starting all over again is gonna be hard
But I pray that the love will help us make it
Starting all over again is gonna be slow

    Starting All Over Again
  • This song is about building a romance anew after an initial breakup. The singer knows it will be an uphill climb, but with help from above, he thinks they can get there. The keys: take it slow, and don't fuss about who's wrong and who's right.
  • Mel & Tim are cousins Mel Hardin and Tim McPherson (Tim sings lead on this track). They started writing songs when they were teenagers growing up in Mississippi. Some of their songs got the attention of Gene Chandler, who signed them to his newly formed Bamboo label. Chandler wanted them to sing the songs they wrote, and they quickly scored two hits for the label: "Backfield In Motion" (#10 US, 1969) and "Good Guys Only Win In The Movies" (#45 US, 1970). The label ran into problems, so Mel & Tim waited out their contract and signed with Stax Records in 1972. Stax released "Starting All Over Again" as their first single - an apt title since the duo was rebooting their career. Unfortunately, it would be their last hit.
  • This song was written by Phillip Mitchell, who was a staff songwriter at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, where Mel & Tim recorded this track. Mitchell also wrote "Oh La De Da" for The Staple Singers and "It Hurts So Good" for Millie Jackson. The studio at this time had songs on hand written by their staff writers in case an artist needed one, which happened quite often.
  • The production and arrangement of this song, including the sitar and the spoken intro, was modeled on "Have You Seen Her" by the Chi-Lites, which was a huge hit in 1971.
  • The spoken intro on this track (removed on the edits sent to pop radio) sets up the storyline in clear detail. After Western Union shows up with a telegram for Mel, we hear this exchange:

Mel: Hey Tim, this is from Barbara.

Tim: Oh, what is she talking about?

Mel: She says she still loves me, she can't do without me. And she'll be here tomorrow.

Tim: I thought you had settled all of that, man.

Mel: Hey man, you see, you just don't understand. I never stopped loving her, I just wasn't ready to accept the love she was willing to give. But if she still loves me, there's nothing in the world that can keep us from making it this time.

Setting up a song with a spoken introduction was popularized by Isaac Hayes, who did it on his version of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." Hayes was a writer, musician and artist for Stax, which was Mel & Tim's label.
  • Daryl Hall and John Oates covered this in 1991. Their version made #10 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

The Night I Heard Caruso Sing
  • The song appears on the duo's fourth album Idlewild. Ben Watt wrote the war-conscious tune in the mid-'80s after driving with his dad to Scotland to revisit some of his old stomping grounds. One of the places they went to was the Holy Loch, which was used as a submarine base in World War II.

In our interview with Watt , he told us about his experience of standing on the edge of the Holy Loch and a nuclear submarine surfacing right in front of them, calling it "A startling moment." He explained how the story of the song is more than just about hearing the Italian operatic tenor, Enrico Caruso, sing for the first time and restoring his faith in humanity. "The song is about the redemptive power of music," said Watt. "Not just Caruso - to make sense of life, to offer succor and wonder, even when life itself may seem frightening and unknowable."
  • Unlike most EBTG songs, Ben Watt sings the lead vocals on this one. Tracey Thorn joins in to sing harmonies with Watt at the 1:30 mark.

    The Levels Lyrics

Your state agent's been over, I've resurfaced the driveway
I'm selling flowers round the pavement, made it nice up the place
I'm up the selling of business, my heart is an ended
Without your face over the counter, without your face

Some nights I'm out there on The Levels
Through the village, pass the church where we got married
And I can see for miles

Now, there is the future, what's it standing in my way?
Right now it's my past, and it's not moving forth

Some nights Im out there on the levels
And the ditches and the fields are flooded by the river
And I can see for miles
And I know its only daylight that we all walk through
And everybody has wounds that heal in time
And Ill get over mine x2

Some nights I'm out there on the levels
And were talking like we used to
And its me who does the talking
Are we out there for a while?

And I can see for miles

    The Levels
  • Ben Watt, best known for his group with wife Tracey Thorn, Everything But The Girl, released his second solo album, Hendra in 2014. The record is a departure from his electronic music and a return to his folk roots featured on his debut album that was released 31 years earlier.

The album was inspired by the unexpected death of Watt's sister. He told us that the song "Hendra" was about his sister's dreams of escape and that "The Levels" was about "what her husband was left with."
  • The track features a cameo from David Gilmour, the co-lead vocalist and guitarist for the British Evolutionary Rock band, Pink Floyd. Gilmour plays slide guitar and contributes backing vocals. Watt spoke to us about how this unexpected collaboration came to be: "We ran into each other by chance at a party just before I started the album. Two musicians in a room full of people from book publishing. We got talking. He invited me to hear his demos. I thought he was joking, but he texted me later to say he was serious." He went on to reveal the simplicity of the situation, "We spent a day at his house and studio, chatting, listening, getting on. It seemed easy. Two weeks later I asked him if he fancied playing on 'The Levels.' He loved the song, said yes, and it was done in a matter of days. Very simple, really." (Here's our full Ben Watt interview .)

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with The Trees
For the Maples want more sunlight
And the Oaks ignore their pleas

    The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade?

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
    As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks, just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
    And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
    By hatchet,
    Axe,
    And saw

    The Trees
  • Though it seems to be steeped in meaning, according to lyricist/drummer Neil Peart, there is no meaning at all in this song. When asked in the April/May 1980 Modern Drummer magazine about whether there is a message to this song, Peart said, "No. It was just a flash. I was working on an entirely different thing when I saw a cartoon picture of these trees carrying on like fools. I thought, 'What if trees acted like people?' So I saw it as a cartoon really, and wrote it that way. I think that's the image that it conjures up to a listener or a reader. A very simple statement." (thanks, Thomas - Pittsburgh, PA)
  • This was used as the B-side of the US release of "Circumstances" as well as the UK release of "The Spirit Of Radio
    ."
  • This song is made up of three distinct time signatures: 6/8, which is used through most of the acoustic sections, the traditional 4/4, which is used in the heavier lead guitar sections, and an unusual 5/4 time signature used in the instrumental bridge. (thanks, Zach - Horn Lake, MS)
  • This song is referenced in the comical online role playing game Kingdom of Loathing. The description of the item Maple Syrup is: "There is unrest in the forest, there is trouble with the trees. Which means plenty of tasty treeblood for you." (thanks, Suzan - Rochester, NY)
  • Ricky, from the Canadian TV series Trailer Park Boys, references this song in the episode "The Spirit of Radio" when he says that he doesn't like Rush because they're "Always singing about trees and stuff like that." (thanks, James - Vancouver, Canada)
  • This song can be seen as a extremely over dramatic representation of how Canadians feel about Americans. Note the maple leaf is at the center of the Canadian flag. (thanks, George - Manassas, VA)
  • The American politician Rand Paul sometimes mentioned this song in interviews and speeches, using it as an example of his libertarian ideology. Neil Peart, whose political views don't always synch with Paul's, had Rush's management send a cease-and-desist order to Paul asking him to stop quoting the lyrics.

You Ought to Be with Me Lyrics

Sit right down and talk to me
About how you want to be
You Ought to Be with Me
Yeah, you ought to be with me

    Thinking about what people do
Talking about how I love you
Thinking there's nothing to what they say
You're going to be with me, anyway

They don't want to see us do
All of the things we want to
You ought to be with me
Hey, you ought to be with me

You don't have to waste my time
If you want to be a friend of mine
You can leave me now and walk away
And turn your back for another day

    Oh babe, yeah, yeah

Say you ought to be the kind of girl
That can brighten this old world
And it's hard to see why you and me
    Can't be together happily

    I'm trying to realize
You being with some other guy
I don't know the reason why
You ought to be with me until I die

You ought to be with me until I die

I don't want to waste my time
If you want to be a friend of mine
I want to hold you tight, love you right
Put good feelin' in your night
