The Ketchup Song Lyrics

Mira lo que se avecina
A la vuelta de la esquina
Viene Diego rumbeando

Con la luna en las pupilas
Y su traje agua marina
Parece de contrabando

Y donde mas no cabe un alma
Alli se mete a darse caña
Poseido por el ritmo ragatanga

Y el dj que lo conoce
Toca el himno de las doce
Para Diego la cancion mas deseada
Why la baila, why la goza why la canta

Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere sebiunouba
Majabi an de bugui an de buididipí
Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere sebiunouba
Majabi an de bugui an de buididipí
Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere sebiunouba
Majabi an de bugui an de buididipí

No es cosa de brujería
Que lo encuentre tos los dias
Por donde voy caminando

Diego tiene chuleria
Why ese punto de alegria
Rastafari afrogitano

Y donde mas no cabe un alma
Alli se mete a darse caña
Poseido por el ritmo ragatanga

Y el dj que lo conoce
Toca el himno de las doce
Para Diego la cancion mas deseada
Y la baila, why la goza why la canta

Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere sebiunouba
Majabi an de bugui an de buididipí
Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere sebiunouba
Majabi an de bugui an de buididipí
Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere sebiunouba
Majabi an de bugui an de buididipí

Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere sebiunouba
Majabi an de bugui an de buididipí
Aserejé, ja deje tejebe tude jebere sebiunouba
Majabi an de bugui an de buididipí

The Ketchup Song
  • The group is made up of Pilar, Lola, and Lucia Munoz - 3 sisters from the Andalusia region of Spain. They took their name in honor of their father, a flamenco guitarist known as "El Tomate."
  • This was a huge international hit. It was #1 in several countries, but took a while to break in America, where it was first played on New York City dance station WKTU. Within 24 hours, it became the most requested song on the station.
  • The lyrics are based on snippets of the 1979 Sugar Hill Gang song "Rapper's Delight."
  • The lyrics are in Spanish, but it is Spanish gibberish based on "Rapper's Delight." The version released in the US has some English gibberish mixed in.
  • The song is about a gypsy named Diego who is very concerned about how he is dressed and loves "Rapper's Delight." Since Diego doesn't understand the English lyrics, he makes up his own raps, which translates into the gibberish in the song.
  • The Spanish version is known as "Asereje," as in "I Said A Hip," which is a lyric in "Rapper's Delight."
  • Has it's own dance, involving a kind of hand-jive and lots of gyrations.
  • This has been compared to the "Macarena," which was also a huge international hit by an unknown group with it's own dance that became a staple of dance clubs, cruise ships, and weddings when it eventually hit the US.
  • In the US, this got a lot of airplay on Spanish stations as well as the TV show Sabado Gigante before getting much mainstream airplay. It was especially popular in South Florida, which has a large Hispanic population.
  • Ketchup, or catsup, originated in China in 1690 as a pickled fish sauce called "ke-tsiap." British sailors took Asian catsup or ketchup from Singapore to England but the British were unable to duplicate the recipe so they started substituting other ingredients, including ground mushrooms, walnuts, and cucumbers. Later the first recipe for "tomato catsup" appeared. (From the book Food for Thought: Extraordinary Little Chronicles of the World by Ed Pearce)
  • Despite the lyrics being Spanish gibberish, this was the best-selling single in France during the 2000s.

  • G-Eazy explained during a Reddit AMA that this song is, "kinda loosely based off of Edie Sedgwick and her story, but told in a modern setting."

Edie Sedgwick (1943 – 1971) was a socialite who formed part of the artist Andy Warhol's Factory scene in New York in the '60s and starred in several of his short films. Plagued by mental health issues and drug addictions, she died in 1971 aged 28 of an overdose.

Sedgwick had a brief affair with Bob Dylan and "Just Like A Woman" and "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" from his 1966 album Blonde on Blonde were both purportedly penned about her. The Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" from their 1967 album The Velvet Underground & Nico and The Cult's 1969 hit single "Edie (Ciao Baby)" were also inspired by the troubled socialite.
  • The song is preceded on These Things Happen by "Factory Girl (Skit)" which is sampled from the Merv Griffin show in the 60s when Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol were guests.

    Marlene On The Wall Lyrics

Even if I am in love with you
All this to say, what's it to you?
Observe the blood, the rose tattoo
Of the fingerprints on me from you

    Other evidence has shown
That you and I are still alone
We skirt around the danger zone
And don't talk about it later

    Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As the records the rise and fall
    Of every soldier passing

But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
    That I am changing

    Marlene On The Wall

I walk to your house in the afternoon
By the butcher shot with the sawdust strewn
"Don't give away the goods too soon"
Is what she might have told me

    Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As the records the rise and fall
Of every man who's been here

But the only one here now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
    That I am changing

    Marlene On The Wall
  • Vega wrote this about coping with loneliness; she finds comfort by looking up to a poster of Marlene Dietrich on the wall. Vega really did have a poster of Dietrich on her wall. She explained in SongTalk magazine: "That was a truthful song. The lines came out of my life. But you want to be careful, too, because you don't want to get into 'Oh, my boyfriend left me...' I have a problem with specifically confessional songwriting. I think you have to craft it in some way. I don't think you can come on stage and blurt out your innermost feelings. My niece can blurt out her innermost feelings. She's four years old. I wouldn't want to pay $25 to go see her do that. You need to put it in a form. Although it is truthful, you have to give it some respect, or a certain kind of dignity, by putting it into a kind of form. Because these people are not my friends. They're paying to see a show, some form of entertainment. So I'm not gonna sit there and talk to them like Ronee Blakely in Nashville."
  • Marlene Dietrich was a German actress who became an international film star in the 1930's. During World War II, she put her movie career on hold in order to entertain US troops, a move that won her the Medal of Freedom, the highest military award a civilian can receive. Dietrich was 90 years old when she died in 1992.
  • Vega told SongTalk that this song always seemed "A little wide of mark, somehow." Said Vega: "It's accessible and people do like it, but for me, personally, inside myself, I feel I had something in mind, and I kind of did it, it was stylish, it was interesting, but I didn't feel it was quite the bulls-eye that some of the others were. The idea of using a poster as a reference point is a very pop idea. It's a song about Marlene Dietrich. You kind of get that from it, or it's a song about a relationship."
  • This was Vega's first single. It did well in the UK, but didn't get noticed in America. Vega, who is from New York, found success in the US 2 years later with her album Solitude Standing, which contained the hit song, "Luka."

There was still there, cross rooms

What to do with heartbroken lady
    Oh I just didn't know

So you put me away but I never wanted to know
Girl I never ever wanted to end this way
Despite of the pain girl I gotta let you know
I'll be coming back for you one day

So don't burn the Bridges cuz I'll be coming back to you
I know it hurts but don't it burn
So don't burn the bridges cuz I'll be coming back to you
you know girl I'm just hope I get on

You said you wouldn't forgive me for all the wrong I've done
I'm a foolish boy that glap in your heart to all the feels we go

So you put me away but I never wanted to know
No I never ever wanted to end this way
Despite of the pain girl I gotta let you know
I'll be coming back for you one day

Don't let burn the bridges cuz I'll be coming back to you

    Tread Lightly Lyrics

    Thru the ages
All the weary and the blind
    Facing the unknown
    Off the venom
    A center our lives
Knowing not your own is unwise
And I will return for more
The light will lead you ashore

    Paralyzed by
    Paralyzed by
    Paralyzed by thorn inside

    To the angel
Breathing on me from the right
    A guilt you'll never know

    From the devil
Staring from the left hand side
    Souls to animal
    Recede your eyes
    Sulk in disgust

When there is doubt look to the obvious
And I'll decide what you will pay
Changing your mind seals our fate

    Paralyzed by
    Paralyzed by
    Paralyzed by thorn inside

    Open your eyes
Take a deep breath and return to life
    Wake up and fight
Fight for the love and the burning light

    Open your eyes
Take a deep breath and return to life

  • The song's title is an allusion to the TV show Breaking Bad. Guitarist Bill Kelliher told Loudwire : "That guy's [Walter White] life is crazy. You take a walk in one of our shoes; this past year there's been a lot of crazy s--t behind the scenes for each person in our band. Just our personal stories and it's just kind of cathartic to get the lyrics out about another year as a band, as people. We've persevered."
  • The song opened both Mastodon's Once More Round the Sun album and their 2015 The Missing Link tour. The band penned the track in January 2014, while they were up in Franklin, Tennessee putting the LP together.
  • Bassist and co-vocalist Troy Sanders told Artist Direct about the song. "I really gravitated towards that one from a lyrical standpoint, because I was able to craft what I thought were really powerful and appropriate words," he said. "It stems from something very dark and personal amongst myself. We like to mask it with metaphors. I remember personally feeling a sense of accomplishment in terms of what I did lyric-wise and vocally on the song. I really believed that one stood out to me amongst the whole album."

"Listening back, it had all of the elements of what we do," Sanders added. "It's not the heaviest. It's not the fastest. It's not the most epic. However, it's like, "That song is strong enough on all points to be the opener of the record!" Sure enough, it became that way."

    Why do they not believe
I have not lied, even for this,
    Now no-one can conceive
The lie becomes the loving kiss,
    But I would not,
    Fall in love,
    Like this.

    The woman stitches the shrouds,
The children murder all the world,
    If only you believe,
    Then only you will die,
    How can you not,
    See the stars,
    In your eyes.

    Sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice,
Sacrifice, pay the price, blood like ice, sacrifice.

The pain is on you now,
Do not consider flight for gain,
    In you the poison breeds,
Crawling with the mark of Cain,
    And no-one shall,
    Set you free,
    Again.

    Sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice,
    Sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice.

    You walk with boundless grace
    Think old thoughts from yesterday
All being lost in the fire
You wandered and lost the way
    Someone's always left behind
When the door of life closes

    And you were slipping away
What do I say to you?
What do I say to you?
And if I want you to stay
What do I say to you?
What do I say to you?

This moment I take for you
Think of all we didn't do
    All seeking answers from this
    Hope to come out alive
Standing still my hands are tied
Our eyes open up to the sky

    And you were slipping away
What do I say to you?
What do I say to you?
And if I want you to stay
What do I say to you?

    Back In The Village Lyrics

Turn the spotlights on the people,
Switch the dial and eat the worm.
Take your chances, kill the engine,
Drop your bombs and let it burn.

    White flags shot to ribbons,
The truce is black and burned,
    Shellshock in the kitchen,
    Tables overturned.

    [Chorus]
    Back In The Village again,
    In the village.
I'm back in the village again.

    Throwing dice now, rolling loaded,
I see sixes all the way.
In a black hole, and I'm spinning
As my wings get shot away.

    No breaks on the inside,
    Paper cats and burning barns,
There's a fox among the chickens,
And a killer in the hounds.

    Questions are a burden
And answers are a prison for oneself
    Shellshock in the kitchen
    Tables start to burn.

    [Chorus]

But still we walk into the valley
And others try to kill the inner flame
    We're burning brighter than before
    I don't have a number, I'M A NAME!

    [Chorus]

  • One of the band's musical adaptations of the old BBC television series, The Prisoner. "The Village" was the name of the prison in this Patrick McGoohan series. (thanks, Jeff - Haltom City, TX)
  • Layered over the line "I see sixes all the way" is a whisper, which is apparently singer Bruce Dickinson saying the number 666. It is a reference to the first album that featured Dickinson on vocals, The Number of the Beast.
  • Bruce Dickinson, a licensed pilot and airplane fan, inserted much pilot terminology in here (he did the same in "Aces High" and "Tailgunner"). For example: "Take your chances, kill the engine, drop your bombs and let them burn" and "In a black hole, and I'm spinning, as my wings get shot away." There is also the line "There's a fox among the chickens," which some have interpreted as a reference to guided missiles (a radar guided missile= "fox 1", infrared guided air to air missile= "fox 2", etc.) A Napalm missile is a "fox six", hence, "I see sixes all the way." Wide is the line
Separates the rivers from the dirt
All the while I wonder who's the one

Within the one and only eye (we all stood cut free)
Within the one and only eye (we all stood cut free)
Within the one and only eye (we all stood cut free)
Within the one and only eye (Self-blinded to see through the veil)

Can you see there's a child
Standing idle by us in this mess
Who am I to cause this emptiness

Willing the sea to cleanse my soul
    Of all that I've been
To bring me free to this clarity
    Clarity

    Trouble rolls in
As the tides, they twist and make the turn
    Pain subsides
And sweeps across the earth again

Willing the sea to cleanse my soul
    Of all that I've been
To bring me free to this clarity
    Clarity

Within the one and only eye (we all stood cut free)
Within the one and only eye (we all stood cut free)
Within the one and only eye (we all stood cut free)
Within the one and only eye (Self-blinded to see through the veil)

I'm standing deep in these waters
    Bleeding free and bent
To drag us onto the new visions
    Only loss fills my void
    Only loss fills my void
    Only loss fills my void

    Only the void connects me
    With these mountains
    Of dust, blood and soil
The stones born in the flames of truth
    Demand a sacrifice
    A sacrifice
    A sacrifice
    A sacrifice

Don't just bleed us and leave us to ourselves
We will return so deeply harmed
    And we will shatter you
    And we will shatter you

    She left Dallas for California
With an old friend by her side
Well he did not say much
    But one year later
He'd ask her to be his wife

And the lights of L.A. County
Look like diamonds in the sky
When you're driving through the hours
With an old friend at your side

One year later I left Houston
With an old friend by my side
Well it did not say much
    But it was a beauty
    Of a coal black .45

And the lights of L.A. County
Look like diamonds in the sky
When you're driving through the hours
With an old friend at your side

So I drove on all the day long
And I drove on through the night
And I thought of her a'waiting
For to be his blushing bride

And the lights of L.A. County
They looked like diamonds in the sky
As I drove into the valley
With my old friend at my side

And as she stood there at the altar
All dressed in her gown of white
Her face was bright as stars a'shining
Like I'd dreamed of all my life

    And they kissed each other
    And they turned around
And they saw me standing in the aisle
Well I did not say much
    I just stood there watching
As that .45 told them goodbye

And the lights of L.A. County
Look like diamonds in the sky
When you're kneeling at the altar
With an old friend at your side

And the lights of L.A. County
    Are a mighty pretty sight

  • Lovett describes this as "An attempt at the narrative murder ballad."
  • Many classic Country songs recount tales of murder, like Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." At this point, Lovett was still being marketed as Country, so this fit with his image.
  • Lyle added his own twist to the tale, vividly describing the marriage of his ex-girlfriend to another man. At the wedding, he shoots them both down from the middle of the aisle. He personifies the murder weapon by calling it his "old friend."

Time’ll tell the seeds I sow
Got into trouble but you just don’t know
    You thought you had me
    You’re wondering why
    Whosoever told you
    Told a Dirty Lie

Now I’m leaving, what can you do?
Who made you think I wanna be with you
I never settle, I never cry
    And whosoever told you
    Told a dirty lie

    Already I’m winning the game
    Your heart’s gonna break
    And it’s a crying shame
A lesson learned a long time ago
I make sure I take it with me when I go

You’ll be alone when the sun goes down
Toss your name in the list and found
    I never loved you baby
    My oh my
    And whosoever told you
    Told a dirty lie

    Dirty Lie
  • This Jazz-flecked Put Your Needle Down track was written by The Secret Sisters with Bob Dylan. Laura Rogers of the duo recalled to Uncut magazine: "It's such a crazy thing, part of me still doesn't believe it happened. We'd just about finished most of the record when T Bone (Burnett) said 'Bob has sent over some demos for you.' He just said 'Bob,' no surname, so at first we didn't realize who he was talking about."
  • Dylan started work on this song in the '80s but never finished it. A fan of the sisters' eponymous debut, he gave the demo to producer T-Bone Burnett. "The melody was written, the demo has him humming along to what he wanted it to be, and the lyrical hook 'whosever told you told a dirty lie' was already there," Laura Rogers recalled to Uncut. "It was an honor to be invited to complete it but incredibly nerve-wracking."
