Rapture Lyrics

Toe to toe
Dancing very close
Barely breathing
Almost comatose
Wall to wall
People hypnotized
And they're stepping lightly
Hang each night in Rapture

Back to back
Sacroiliac
Spineless movement
And a wild attack

Face to face
Sadly solitude
And it's finger popping
Twenty-four hour shopping in Rapture

Fab Five Freddie told me everybody's high
DJ's spinnin' are savin' my mind
Flash is fast, Flash is cool
Francois sez fas, Flashe' no do
And you don't stop, sure shot
Go out to the parking lot
And you get in your car and you drive real far
And you drive all night and then you see a light
And it comes right down and lands on the ground
And out comes a man from Mars
And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head
And then you're in the man from Mars
You go out at night, eatin' cars
You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too
Mercury's and Subaru's
And you don't stop, you keep on eatin' cars

Then, when there's no more cars
You go out at night and eat up bars where the people meet
Face to face, dance cheek to cheek
One to one, man to man
Dance toe too toe
Don't move to slow, 'cause the man from Mars
Is through with cars, he's eatin' bars
Yeah, wall to wall, door to door, hall to hall
He's gonna eat 'em all
Rapture, be pure
Take a tour, through the sewer
Don't strain your brain, paint a train
You'll be singin' in the rain
I said don't stop, to punk rock

Well now you see what you wanna be
Just have your party on TV
'Cause the man from Mars won't eat up bars when the TV's on
And now he's gone back up to space
Where he won't have a hassle with the human race
And you hip-hop, and you don't stop
Just blast off, sure shot
'Cause the man from Mars stopped eatin' cars and eatin' bars
And now he only eats guitars, get up!

Rapture
  • This was the first #1 hit song with a rap. Artists like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, and Kurtis Blow had been rapping since the mid-'70s, and The Sugarhill Gang had the first Top 40 hit earlier in 1980 with "Rapper's Delight," but until "Rapture," rap had never been incorporated into a hit pop song.

Debbie Harry did the rap, and it was really ridiculous, with lyrics about the "Man from Mars eating cars," but the novelty helped the song become a hit.

Harry's rap is so goofy that it sounds like she could be mocking the genre, but this was very early in the evolution of hip-hop, and many of the rhymes that came out of the New York block parties were just as silly. Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie championed rap and got involved in the community, often attending these block parties - they even took Nile Rodgers to one, which is where he learned that his song "Good Times" was a DJ favorite. Blondie brought rap to a far larger audience with this song; Debbie Harry says that a lot of rappers - including members of Mobb Deep and Wu-Tang Clan - told her it was the first rap song they ever heard, since the genre wasn't welcome on the radio then.
  • Until this came out, rappers always used existing songs as the basis for the music they would rap over. They usually took disco or soul records and looped the beats to extend the breaks. Debbie Harry's rap in this was nothing special, but it was the first rap in a song that had its own original music.
  • In certain Christian theology, The Rapture is an event where believers are transported to heaven while others must endure the beginning of the end times on Earth. The lyrics of this song are a bit apocalyptic, as the "Man from Mars" starts destroying the planet with his insatiable appetite. The word "Rapture" is also a play on the rap aspect of the song.
  • As the age of disco ended, so did Blondie's success. This was their last US hit until 1999, when they had a comeback song called "Maria." They did have another UK hit in 1982 called "Island Of Lost Souls."
  • If you listen carefully to the lyrics, you might hear something naughty. Shortly before the rap, there is a line that sounds a lot like "Finger F--king." Most lyric sheets list this line as "Finger Popping."
  • Hip-Hop promoter and former host of Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddie is in the video and is mentioned in the song. He was part of the early rap scene and is credited with helping bring it into the mainstream. Blondie originally met Fab Five Freddy and his crew at a club. They all became friends, and one day Freddy jokingly suggested that Debbie Harry should write a song about them. She did, and the result was the rap that is the second half of the song. She sent it to Freddy, he and his crew loved it and she ended up recording it.
  • The video for this features a cameo appearance by New York artist/Andy Warhol disciple Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose life was portrayed in the 1996 film Basquiat.
  • The lyrics, "Flash is fast, flash is cool" are a reference to pioneering hip-hop DJ Grandmaster Flash.
  • KRS-One interpolated this song on his 1997 single "Step Into A World (Rapture's Delight)," which made #70 in the US. Singing with KRS-One on the track is Keva Holman. The song can be heard in the 2013 movie This Is the End, where it fits with the rapture theme.
  • A few months after this song was released, Tom Tom Club issued their first single, "Wordy Rappinghood." The Tom Tom Club song wasn't issued in America, but became a big hit in Europe and Latin America. Like "Rapture," it featured a white female vocalist doing a rap (Tina Weymouth).

Like Blondie, Tom Tom Club was immersed in the New York music scene and influenced by hip-hop. Neither act knew the other was working on a rap song - Blondie was recording in New York while Tom Tom Club was working in the Bahamas.

    Lay Me Down Lyrics

You see me howling at the moon,
It's what you taught me to do, hmm
I'm chasing stars just to get back closer to you!
You see the ashes by the fire (fire)
The only life that I knew, hmm
I touched the flame just to get back closer to you!

    Show me the way,
    I've done traveling too far
With the cross on my back
And a hole in my heart, now you say
There's no love to be found
When six feet down and I thought that made me closer to you!
Why don't you Lay Me Down, lay me down lay me down
Won't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down, closer to you!
Why don't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down
Won't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down, closer to you!

You hear me beating at the door,
What else you want me to do
    Oh
You got me crawling up the walls to get closer to you
    (Yes you do!)

    Show me the way,
    I've done traveling too far
With the cross on my back
And a hole in my heart, now you say
There's no love to be found
When six feet down and I thought that made me closer to you!
Why don't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down

Why don't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down
Won't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down, closer to you!

    Closer to you!

    Show me the way,
    I've done traveling too far
With the cross on my back
And a hole in my heart, now you say
There's no love to be found
When six feet down and I thought that made me closer to you!
    (Closer, closer)
    Closer to you
    Closer to you

Why don't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down
Won't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down, closer to you!

Why don't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down
Won't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down, closer to you!
Why don't you lay me down, lay me down lay me down?

    Lay Me Down
  • This song was co-written by Adam Pallin. The American is best for being the producer/programmer half of the Pop duo Little Jackie, who had a UK Top 20 hit in 2008 with "The World Should Revolve Around Me." The other songwriters were Ashton Parson and Matt Parad.
  • The song was released as the second single from Pixie Lott's eponymous album. She said: "I think the track is a perfect second single because it still has an upbeat vibe you can dance to, but with a meaningful lyric in a soulful way. I love performing this live with the band because we can really get into it."
  • The song's music video finds Pixie soaking up the sun on the Mediterranean. She said: "I absolutely loved shooting this with a fabulous team. I shot it with the same company who did my video for 'Heart Cry', because they captured the perfect vibe before. It was my first time in the south of France and I was in awe, so beautiful."

    Somebody's Watching Me Lyrics

    Who's watching?
    Tell me who's watching.
    Who's watching me?

I'm just an average man, with an average life.
I work from nine to five; hey hell, I pay the price.
    All I want is to be left alone in my average home;
But why do I always feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone, and

I always feel like Somebody's Watching Me.
    And I have no privacy.
Woh, I always feel like somebody's watching me.
Tell me is it just a dream?

When I come home at night.
I bolt the door real tight.
People call me on the phone I'm trying to avoid.
Well, can the people on T.V. see me.
    Or am I just paranoid?

    When I'm in the shower.
I'm afraid to wash my hair.
'Cause I might open my eyes
    And find someone standing there.
    People say I'm crazy.
    Just a little touched.
But maybe showers remind me of
    "Psycho" too much.
    That's why. . .

I always feel like somebody's watching me.
    And I have no privacy.
Woh, I always feel like somebody's watching me.
    Who's playing tricks on me?

    Who's watching me?
    I don't know anymore . . . are the neighbors watching
    Who's watching?
Well, it's the mailman watching me: and I don't feel safe anymore.
    Tell me who's watching.
Oh, what a mess. I wonder who's watching me now,
    (WHO?) the I.R.S.?

I always feel like somebody's watching me.
    And I have no privacy.
Woh, I always feel like somebody's watching me.
    Who's playing tricks on me?

I always feel like somebody's watching me.
I always feel like somebody's watching me.
I always feel like somebody's watching me.
I always feel like somebody's watching me.
I always feel like somebody's watching me.

I always feel like somebody's watching me.
    And I have no privacy.
Woh, I always feel like somebody's watching me.
    I can't enjoy my tea.

I always feel like somebody's watching me.
    I want my privacy.
Woh, I always feel like somebody's watching me.
Woh, I always feel like somebody's watching me.
    Stop playing tricks on me
Woh, I always feel like somebody's watching me.

  • Rockwell is Kennedy Gordy, son of Motown founder Berry Gordy from a relationship with Margaret Norton. Kennedy put the demo together with the help of a Motown producer named Curtis Nolen. Berry Gordy didn't have much faith in his son as a recording artist, but when he heard this, he knew it was a hit and agreed to release it.
  • Michael Jackson sang backup. Rockwell's sister Hazel was married to Jackson's brother Jermaine. Michael Jackson was at the height of his powers, and Rockwell knew he could get the song released if he could convince Michael to sing on it. (thanks, Brian - Edmonton, Canada)
  • The Motown brain trust came up with the name "Rockwell." Prince and Madonna were doing very well using one name, and inspiration struck when someone saw a photo of a Norman Rockwell painting.
  • Christian rapper Toby Mac (real name: Toby McKeegan) of the band DC Talk sampled this for his song "Somebody's Watching." In this case, it referred to God, who Toby believed was constantly looking out for him. Joanna Valencia sang backup vocals. Toby Mac also sampled the Buffalo Springfield song "For What It's Worth" for his song "What's Goin' Down?," both of which appear on the album Momentum. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • In 2006 Beatfreakz, a duo from Holland, reached #3 in the UK with a dance version of this song that also topped the charts in Spain. The video was a parody of Michael Jackson's "Thriller." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
  • This was used in commercials for Geico insurance in 2008. The ads showed stacks of money with googly eyes staring at people who might save money on their car insurance. This song played whenever the money was nearby. The spots were very successful and ran well into 2009 and Michael Jackson's unexpected death.

    American Dream Plan B Lyrics

    American Dream Plan B
  • This song about a guy who perseveres in fighting for his chance was released as the first single off Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Hypnotic Eye album. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Petty admitted the song was a tough sell, as after playing it for the rest of the band their initial reaction was silence. "I said, 'Listen, I think we have something here, but we're going to have to get excited about it,'" he said.

Eventually, Petty added laughing, the Heartbreakers admitted they loved the song, but he had to drag the affirmation out of them.
  • The song is laden with fuzz and distortion. Guitarist Mike Campbell told Uncut magazine: "It was Tom's idea to have fuzz bass on that song. He wanted it real spare and just to have this really ugly fuzz bass going on, which we've never really done. That was the inspiration for the whole approach to that."
  • Petty sings here of the vanishing American dream:

    Well, my mama so sad
    Daddy's just mad
'Cause I ain't gonna have the chance he had
    My success is anybody's guess
But like a fool, I'm bettin' on happiness

"It's strange," Petty told The Sun. "The economy crashed because, aside from some very crooked people, you had Americans believing they could live way beyond what they could afford through loans."

"That wouldn't have happened decades back, so it's part of my thinking," he added. "The guy in this song has decided to dream big, because there's nothing left for him to do. He has nothing."
  • Hypnotic Eye debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. It was Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' first chart-topper and it arrived atop the summit 37 years after they first appeared on the tally in September 1977 with their self-titled debut album.

    Don't point your finger
    Not dangerous
    This is our planet

    And this is our

    The planets are linin' up
    We're bringin' brighter days
    They're all in line
    Waitin' for you
    Can't you see?
You're just Another Part Of Me

    Out from a nation
    I feel the truth
    The final message
    We'll bring to you
There is no danger to feel the truth
    So come again
    We need you

They took both songs to Jackson's manager Frank DiLeo, who got up and started dancing when they played "Another Part Of Me." According to Jones, this sealed the deal and that song made the cut.

  • Tuatara is a long-running project led by Mad Season/Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin. This song features amongst others, regular collaborators saxophonist Skerik of Critters Buggin, guitarist Peter Buck of R.E.M. and keyboardist Scott McCaughey of The Young Fresh Fellows and The Minus 5.
  • Martin explained to Billboard magazine the tune, "was initially inspired by a particular beat, which is loosely built upon John Bonham's 'The Crunge' beat… Skerik started riffing that melody over the top of the beat with a baritone sax, and Peter Buck had this great wah wah sound dialed in on his guitar. Scott McCaughey played that funky Wurlitzer piano."

Martin added the song "encapsulates the theme for the Underworld album, which is essentially a 20 song romp through the underworld, complete with a cast of characters that you would find hanging out down there. It's like Miles Davis' On The Corner or something like that."

    South Philly, North Side
    Oakland, Texas
    Georgia, Black People
    Yo, Worldwide, Sup my nigga
    You know what I'm saying
    Dumb and blind

They say a record ain't nothing if it's not touching
Gripping, draw you in closer make you want to listen to it
And if you real ill at making music
Then lesson will feel like you livin' through it
That's how my nigga do it
I met Slacks back in like '91 rapping
We went to Millersville to get away from gun clappin'
    It ain't last
I be in class dreaming 'bout
50,000 fans up in the stands screaming out
Encore, yo I'm headed back to Philly
    Nigga you rollin' with me?
    I'm trying to get busy
We walk dogs that was off the chain
Lot of times at the show people hardly came
I just took it in stride as part of the game
But inside people down with me started to change
    It was a couple things
    Lil' [unknown], lil' pills
Instead of driving out on the road you rather chill
I know the way the pleasure feel
    I'm not judging
But still I'm on a mission, yo I'm not buggin'
I got fam that won't stop druggin'
    They can't sleep
They can't stick to one subject, they can't eat
Is people steady comin' at me out in the streets
Like Riq yo wat up with your peeps
    It gets deep nigga

Yo, you need to walk straight, master your high
Son you missin' out on was passing you by
I done seen the streets suck a lot of cats dry
But not you and I my nigga
    We got to get
Come on, over over the Water
Come on, over over the water
    Water, Water

Yo, we done made too many meals
    A couple of deals
We done share clothes and wills
    Killed mics and reels
    We done rock
Shows abroad, and slept on floors
Trying to figga what the fuck we gettin' slept on for
Oh why we walking with the rep up for
    Waited by the cavity law
You know it if you came up poor my nigga
    Picture a bus up north
You know we made of everything outlaws are made of
    I'm far from a hater
And I don't say I love you 'cause the way I feel is greater
In Illa you a poet son
    You a ball creator
And this will probably dawn on you later
Is in you nature, letters all up in the wall like they made of paper
You got to find out where you talent take you
You might fuck around, finally make it
    And that's real but yo

Yo, you need to walk straight, master your high

And when I walk the street is like a pharmacy
They got all type of shit
    Anybody could get
It goes from H to Ex
    To lucy ciggarette
    For my ghetto legend
    Known from Lil' shyst running
Cop codeine by the courts and keep comin'
Dummy, just embracing the dope like it's a woman
You burnin' both sides of the rope and keep pullin'
Tuggin', in between Islam and straight tuggin'
Laying everyday around the way and doin' nothin'
See'em looking shaking their head and start shruggin'
If they don't have a man like mine, they got a cousin
Hey yo you better be a true friend to 'em
Before the shit put an end to 'em
Or give a pen to 'em
Or lock'em up in the studio with a mic
'Cause on the real it might save his life
    Keep tellin'em

    Pretty baby, come with me
    It's my birthday
    It's my birthday
    I'mma live my fantasy
Here we go, here we go
Tell the people in the disco
Burn it down to the floor
'Cause we don't care, care, care
We got our hands up into the air
    Everybody in the party
    We party like it's everybody's birthday-day

    It's My Birthday
  • Will.i.am collaborated with Cody Wise for this Bollywood inspired track. The American recording artist is signed to Interscope Records through The Black Eyed Pea leader's imprint. The song was released on May 27, 2014 after will.i.am previwed it on Alan Carr's UK Chatty Man show on April 6th.
  • Will.i.am wrote the tune with Cody Wise and Keith Harris (Madonna, Robin Thicke). The intro and outro is heavily based on the Tamil song "Urvasi Urvasi", originally composed by A. R. Rahman. "I fell in love with the song and wanted to interpret it," Will.i.am told Jimmy Fallon in a Tonight Show exclusive. "We took portions of that song and put it over today's thick, urban electronic-type beat."
  • The single was originally named 'Birthday' but it was changed to 'It's My Birthday' to avoid confusion with the Katy Perry song of the same title.
  • The song borrows from the popular Jamaican songs "Pull Up To Mi Bumper" by Konshens & J Capri and "Fi Di Jockey" by Aidonia, giving it a dancehall vibe. The tune also samples Bounty Killer chanting "Big Ship Sailing."
  • This was will.i.am's tenth #1 on the UK singles chart. He'd previously achieved five chart-toppers as a member of Black Eyed Peas, two under his own name, and was a featured artist on Usher's "OMG" and The Script's "Hall Of Fame."
  • Will.i.am sings about living every day as if it's your birthday. "You get a license to do whatever you want on your birthday," he explained. "I try to live in that celebrative, who-gives-a-f perspective and celebrate every day as if it was my birthday."

    Hit Or Miss Lyrics

The needle on my record player has been wearing thin
This record has been playing since the day you've been with him

    No more long rides home
    No more of your station
    I didn't like it anyway
Remember the time we wrote our names up on the wall
Remember the time we realized "Thriller" was our favorite song

    Have I waited too long
    Have I found that someone
    Have I waited too long
    Too see you

    Maybe it's for the best
    Maybe it's not for anything
It wouldn't be so bad to take this right from me

    No more long rides home
    No more of your station
    I didn't like it anyway
Remember the time we wrote our names up on the wall
Remember the time we realized "Thriller" was our favorite song

    Have I waited too long
    Have I found that someone
    Have I waited too long
    Too see you

    How many times I've tried
It's simple to you, so simple to lie
    How many times I've tried
    Blatant mistakes of your design

    Have I waited too long
    Have I found that someone
    Have I waited too long
    Too see you

    I've had so many chances
Turn my back and I ran away
    I've had so many chances
    To see you

  • In one version of the song there is brief dialogue at the beginning. The lines the person says are from the book The Outsiders, which was adapted into a movie in 1983. The lines from the book lead into a Robert Frost poem called Nothing Gold Can Stay which is the title of the album. (thanks, Billy - Mountaintop, PA)
  • Steve Klein (guitar) told Kerrang! magazine February 16, 2008: "It's one of the first songs that we ever wrote that was in the direction that we ended up going." Chad Gilbert (guitar) added: "I remember Cyrus (Bolooki, drums) coming to me and playing me the guitar riff. We took that riff and it became a really important song. That was the song that really won kids over. We played it so much that it got a reaction from fans everywhere we played, without it even being on the radio."
  • Jordan Pundik (vocals) in the same Kerrang! interview: "It's about realizing that you had something good when it's too late."
  • This was featured in the 2001 movie American Pie 2.

    Catch Tomorrow Lyrics

He lost it all, he's homeless now
    Walking on Sunset Boulevard alone
    No place to go
That's when I asked him what you're smiling for?
He said I'm on this road, tryina Catch Tomorrow
And every night she walks the streets
With a little red dress looking for some love
    She's out to look
But if you'll ask her what you're smiling for?
She'd say I'm on this road, tryina catch tomorrow

Oooh oh oh oooh oh oh
I'm on this road, tryina catch tomorrow
Oooh oh oh oooh oh oh
I said I'm on this road, tryina catch tomorrow

On great Aunt Osh she realized
    Everything she loved even goal
All she got is a soul
But if I'd ask her what you're smiling for?
She'd say I'm on this road, tryina catch tomorrow
Saw a bold miracle walking hand in hand
    No future at all
    Am in the cold
Don't dare to ask them what you're crying for?
I know I'm on this road tryina catch tomorrow

Oooh oh oh oooh oh oh
I'm on this road, tryina catch tomorrow
Oooh oh oh oooh oh oh
I'm on this road, tryina catch tomorrow

  • This Progressive House track features the rugged rock star voice of Sting. Asked by MTV UK how the former Police frontman got involved on the cut, Afrojack replied. "Despite popular belief, I regularly listen to classic pop and rock songs and I'm a big fan of Sting's music. Electronic music really matches up with the right attitude, in my opinion."

"My good friend Martin Kierszenbaum from Cherrytree Records heard the original demo of this song and suggested Sting," he continued. "Eventually he set up a meeting and Sting and I both hit it off musically, the result is what you can hear on the album."

Being So Not For You (I Had No Right) Lyrics

Why can't I keep you from the cold
Seem to know the difference faces
No matter what road you travel on
You go through the darkest places

I can't tell the angels it'll be good
    For you
But wanting to say blesses be the
    Darkness
    For bringing the life through

But I'd be lying to myself

I had no right bringing you here
Knowing what I know, feeling the way
    I feel
I had no right being so uncontent,
    Being so confused,
    Being so not for you

You're in love with all that you don't know
    It animates your expectations
But what's the easiest way to hurt a man
Give him all he's ever wanted

Trying to tell the angels I don't
    Know what to do
    While convincing myself to believe
All the sadness have purpose to
    Makes me hate this

I had no right bringing you here
Knowing what I know, feeling the
    Way I feel
I had no right being so uncontent,
    Being so confused,
    Being so not for you

And when you asked the angels to
    Make you a better you
    Dream all you want
Cause all the light you occupy
They will try and take it all from
    You

I had no right bringing you here
Knowing what I know, feeling the
    Way I feel
I had no right being so uncontent,
    Being so confused,
    Being so not for you

  • The song opens with a Johann Sebastian Bach chorale from the German Baroque composer's "St Matthew Passion."

The St. Matthew Passion was a musical composition written by Bach for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra. It set chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew to music, with interspersed chorales and arias.
  • The music video features a giant snake being driven through city streets. Cellist Grace Chatto told HMV.com : "We spent months making the video, because Jack (Patterson, bass guitar and keyboards) made the gold snake from scratch and made it move around London."
