Sliver

This is a semi-autobiographical song about being deserted by your parents. The words were written by Kurt Cobain, and tell the story about a little boy left at his grandparents house and him screaming to go home. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ)

Dan Peters from the group Mudhoney played drums on this. Like Nirvana, Mudhoney came out of the Seattle music scene, and for a while were doing much better. Nirvana went through a lot of drummers before finding Dave Grohl, and Peters played just one show with the band.

This inspired the Weezer track "Heart Songs." Weezer leeder Rivers Cuomo told Rolling Stone magazine about hearing this song for the first time: "I was working at Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard in the spring of '91, and another cashier, Harold, said, 'Hey, Rivers, I know something you might like. It's called Nirvana.' As soon as I heard 'Mom and Dad went to a show,' I immediately started dancing around. It was exactly how I felt, and they were putting it to music. The music video for this song shows clips of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love's daughter Frances Bean Cobain, who was a year old at the time. Many of the songs on Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour album, including this one, were inspired by his unrequited love for one person. He explained to Interview magazine. "My album focuses on unrequited love quite a lot because I don't think it's spoken about enough in music. I've been through it myself and I found it hard to find songs that were about that, so I've definitely tried to make that a part of my album."

Smith added: "When I was going through that, instead of searching for songs by other artists to relate to I could listen to my own music. I'd do a song in the studio and it would explain everything I'm going through so perfectly that when I went home and I felt down I could listen to that to make me feel better. It's a documentation of my life. I think it's just important to put it out there."

The Luke Monaghan-directed video follows a love triangle involving Smith and two close friends set in Paris. The female is played by model Daisy Lowe, who is the daughter of Gavin Rossdale, the lead singer of Bush. The clip marked the first time that Smith publicly addressed his sexuality.

Smith told 4Music : "Leave Your Lover is about someone I fell in love with last year. I tried to make this track sound pretty because the message of the song is pretty sad."

Smith felt closure after telling his unrequited love that the In the Lonely album was based on him. "I told him before the album came out and it gave me a lot of closure actually," the singer revealed to ITN News. "It made the whole; it just put a bookend at the end of the record. It was amazing. I'm so happy I did it."

Sam Smith wrote this song with Simon Aldred, who is the frontman of the rock band Cherry Ghost. Smith told Digital Spy the story of the song. "We were in his living room having a cup of tea and I was completely entranced by the chords," he said.

"I immediately came up with that lyric, 'Leave your lover, leave him for me'. I remember feeling so proud that I got the word 'him' in. We just put that down as a demo and it took about an hour to write - then we went and got a bagel together!"

Sharon Van Etten and Christian, a barman and DJ, decided to commit to each other at the beginning of the touring cycle for the singer's 2012 album Tramp. This followed seven years of drifting in and out of each other's lives. Van Etten told NME they "weren't ready to be together," but on this song, she sings about knowing that there would be, "trouble for a long time" from the moment they met.

This song finds Van Etten telling the story of how she met her boyfriend. She told Uncut magazine: "That one is really R&B which I haven't done much before, it has more of a Sade groove. I was really into Sade's 'Soldier of Love.' And I got tired of the guitar, I thought I was rewriting the same song, so I started playing keys more."

The song's music video features the We Are Scientists duo of Keith Murray and Chris Cain engaged in a low-budget space adventure. "It's a love song, but with plenty of ambivalence and frustration lurking around the edges," Murray explained to MTV News. "We figured a good way to illustrate that would be to use that old trope of a guy who gets involved with an alien woman on a foreign world after slaying all her friends. The seeds of disaster are planted right at the beginning for this young couple!"

The song is a track from We Are Scientists' fifth album TV En Français. Asked by HMV.com where the title came from, Murray replied: "We were in Miami doing photoshoots for the album artwork and we knew that one of the themes for the album was poor communication, the idea of being in a conversation and not really understanding what the other person was really saying. We saw this cheap motel on the beach in Miami that advertised that it had TV in French and we thought it was an interesting metaphor for poor communication between a couple."

"It's like you're talking to someone, but you're not really catching what it is they're really saying, it's a bit like watching TV in French," he added, "When you watch TV in French you kind of get the gist of what's going on, but you're missing a lot of the nuances and core meaning."
