Good God Lyrics

You came into my life
Without a single thing
I gave into your ways
Which left me with nothing
I've given empty smiles
I've dealt with all your games
I wish you'd bet right now
I had to let you win
Won't you get the fuck out of my face, now!
Won't you get the fuck out of my face, now!
In the sea of life you're just a minnow
Live your life insecure
Feel the pain of your needles
As they shit into my mind
I scream without a sound
How could you take away
Everything that I was
Made me a fuckin' slave
Your face that I despise
Your heart inside that's gray
I came today to say
You're fucked in every way

Won't you get the fuck out of my face, now!
Won't you get the fuck out of my face, now!

In the sea of life you're just a minnow
Live your life insecure
Feel the pain of your needles
As they shit into my mind
You stole my life
Without a sigh
You sucked me dry

Won't you get the fuck out of my face, now!

In the sea of life you're just a minnow
Live your life insecure
Feel the pain of your needles
As they shit into my mind
You stole my life
Without a sigh
You sucked me dry

Good God
  • Lead singer Jonathan Davis: "It's about a guy I knew in school who I thought was a my friend, but who f**ked me. He came into my life with nothing, hung out at my house, lived off me, and made me do sh*t I didn't really wanna do. I was into new romantic music and he was a mod, and he'd tell me if I didn't dress like a mod he wouldn't be my friend anymore. Whenever I had plans to go on a date with a chick he'd sabotage it, because he didn't have a date or nothing. He was a gutless f**king nothing. I haven't talked to him for years."
  • Like their song "Faget," a video was shot for this, but was never released. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 2)

    Slowburn
  • This song finds frontwoman Junita Stein expressing her impatience at the tortuous speed it takes in getting music released. "The very nature of any artist is to create, and then share this creation," she explained to Drowned in Sound . "Some art forms require more or less time going trough the machine, before exposing itself. The journey for an independent spirited artist in the 21st century requires the patience of a f--king saint. The challenge lies in maintaining inspired throughout the process. This song bottles my frustration at all of that."

    Release Lyrics

    I see the world
    Feel the chill
    Which way to go
    Windowsill

    I see the words
On a rocking horse of time
I see the birds in the rain

    Oh dear dad
    Can you see me now
    I am myself
    Like you somehow

    I'll ride the wave
    Where it takes me
    I'll hold the pain
    Release it

    Oh dear dad
    Can you see me now
    I am myself
    Like you somehow

I'll wait up in the dark
For you to speak to me
    I'll open up
    Release me
    Release me

    Release
  • This very cathartic song began as a droning riff guitarist Stone Gossard started playing. The rest of the band started forming the track, and Eddie Vedder walked up to the microphone and poured out the words that would make up most of the lyrics. It was a very emotional song for Vedder, who was thinking about the pain and loss he had been through: he found out as a teenager that the man he thought was his father was actually his stepfather, and his real father died before they could connect. Eddie realized that the song had a similar meaning for his bandmates, who were still dealing with the death of Andrew Wood, who was the lead singer in Gossard and Jeff Ament's band before they formed Pearl Jam. "Release" was one of the first songs Eddie wrote with the band, and it's one that helped them find common ground. "We were strangers, but we were coming from a similar place," said Vedder.
  • At first, this song was almost 10 minutes long, as Vedder did "release" a lot of words when he started singing it.

    Life For Me Lyrics

When the day's over and I have a second to myself
I lie on the sofa watching TV
Get on the computer and start checking up on everyone else
    On everyone else

    Looking at all the pictures
Up to all sorts of mischief
    Some of them are ridiculous
    Everything's there to see

    Everyone looks so wasted
    Totally off their faces
    I feel so isolated
    Everyone there but me

Why does it feel like I'm missing something?
"Been there and done that" was good for nothing
Everything's perfect, yeah I'm as content as can be
This is the Life For Me (This is the life for me, yeah)

Tell me I'm normal for feeling like this
It's a bit early for a midlife crisis
Everything's perfect, yeah I'm as content as can be
This is the life for me (This is the life for me, yeah)

I'm not complaining but last night I hardly slept at all
But actually yes I am complaining
No energy left in me, the baby might have taken it all
    'Cause I've hit the wall

Please don't think that I'm being rude
Honey I'm just not in the mood
I'm head to toe in baby food
So please will you give it a rest

    It's not that I don't love you
And it's not that I don't want to
Honestly baby to tell you the truth
I feel like a bit of a mess

Why does it feel like I'm missing something?
"Been there and done that" was good for nothing
Everything's perfect, yeah I'm as content as can be
This is the life for me (This is the life for me, yeah)

Tell me I'm normal for feeling like this
It's a bit early for a midlife crisis
Everything's perfect, yeah I'm as content as can be
This is the life for me (This is the life for me, yeah)

I could never get bored of it
And most of the time I love this
    But sometimes I get nostalgic
    When actually I'm complete

Why does it feel like I'm missing something?
"Been there and done that" was good for nothing
Everything's perfect, yeah I'm as content as can be
This is the life for me (This is the life for me, yeah)

Tell me I'm normal for feeling like this
It's a bit early for a midlife crisis

    Life For Me
  • Allen's two daughters, Ethel and Marnie, are the driving force behind this song about a young mother keeping up with the news of her old party crew and wondering if she's missing out. The singer told Q magazine: "I was reading the papers and seeing my friends and peers doing what I had done before and feeling like, 'Have I made the right choice?' And I had made the right choice by the way, I love my children. They're the best things that have ever happened to me and I would trade all this in a second if I thought it was going to impact negatively on them."

    Ana's Song Lyrics

    Please die Ana
For as long as you're here we're not
You make the sound of laughter
    and sharpened nails seem softer
And I need you now somehow
And I need you now somehow

Open fire on the needs designed
    On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
    What I need from you

    Imagine pageant
In my head the flesh seems thicker
    Sandpaper tears corrode the film

And I need you now somehow
And I need you now somehow

Open fire on the needs designed
    On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
    What I need from you

    And you're my obsession
I love you to the bones
    And Ana wrecks your life
    Like an Anorexia life

Open fire on the needs designed
    On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
    What I need from you
Open fire on the needs designed
Open fire on my knees desires

    Ana's Song
  • Lead singer Daniel Johns wrote this about his fight with the eating disorder Anorexia (Ana = Anorexia). It references Lady Diana Spencer, as she also suffered from an eating disorder.
  • Silverchair are an Australian band. In most of their promotional materials, the band name does not have a capital letter, as they think it looks better all in lower case. The band had their first hits while still in their teens and were nicknamed "Nirvana in Pajamas." (thanks, Tariqa - Hamilton, New Zealand)
  • Daniel Johns: "It pretty much focuses on the story where the actor is a person with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She's compulsively washing her hands and hiding behind a psychological disorder. And it's basically lot's of visual stuff going on. It's got a story but it's very visual. We wanted to make a visual video but not a generic band rock performance video."(thanks, Beth - MN)
  • Benjamin Gillies: "The video is done by a lady in Australia called Cate Anderson. She'd actually done a short film for us before, for the song Emotion Sickness. Her ideas are really good and she's just kind of suited the kind of style that the video was going to be done for the Ana's Song." (thanks, Beth - MN)

  • This commentary on celebrity culture finds Carey working with an old collaborator, Q-Tip. She previously worked with the rapper and record producer on her 1997 single "Honey." Speaking to Radio.com prior to mixing the song, Carey admitted. "He's angry with me because he thinks that I didn't allow him to do his mix, but really it's okay. He loves me, we're going to make this work. And that's good because it's one of my favorite songs. I'm going to call him soon…I think we need to get that ready."

    Abraham, Martin and John Lyrics

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people
But it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone

Has anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people
But it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone

Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people
But it seems the good die young
But I just looked around and he's gone

Didn't you love the things that they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
    And we'll be free
    Someday soon, it's gonna be
    One day

Has anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin'

  • This song is a tribute to those involved in the battle for civil rights. The title refers to Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy. The last verse in the song refers to "Bobby" - JFK's brother, Robert Kennedy. Everyone mentioned in the song has died ("has anybody here seen my old friend...") and this is symbolized by their progression over a hill.
  • This has been covered by the Brothers Four, Ray Charles, Kenny Rogers, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Mahalia Jackson, and Moms Mabley. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for above 2)
  • This was written by the rockabilly singer Dick Holler (who also wrote the novelty hit "Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron"). Dion had just recovered from heroin addiction and was offered this as a possible comeback song. It made it to #4 on the Hot 100 and reestablished Dion in the music business.
  • Bob Dylan performed this on his 1980-81 tour. (thanks, Marti - Lynnwood, WA, for above 2)
  • Whitney Houston covered this song at her 1997 Washington DC concert, "Classic Whitney." It was filmed and turned into an HBO special. (thanks, David - NYC, NY)
  • Initially, Dion detested the song, but he has since come to understand its legacy, telling one interviewer, "I realized that what these four guys had in common was a dream... It was like they had the courage to believe that a state of love really can exist."
  • Dion claimed to have received over 4,000 letters thanking him for recording this song. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)

Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse Lyrics

On the back cover of this album is a personal treasure
This is my first and only self-portrait
I drew it when I was three and a half and entitled it
    "Me. I Am Mariah."
Please don't judge me for such a simplistic title
Come on, I was only three and a half

It was a creative visualisation of how I saw myself
With the purity of a child's heart before it was ever broken
I've kept this drawing private for so long
But because this album is a reflection
of some of the peaks and valleys that have made me who I am today
I've decided to share it with those of you who actually care
And have been here for me through it all
I've been through a lot, but I've always known me
    I am Mariah

Along the way there have been a couple of nicknames
And I've inadvertently embodied many personas
    Lately, they've been calling me
    "The Elusive Chanteuse"
    I like it

Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse
  • This is the title track of Carey's fourteenth studio album. The singer explained in a YouTube clip that the first half of its name is based on her "first and only self-portrait," which she drew when she was a child. "Please don't judge me for such a simplistic title. Come on, I was only three and a half," she chuckles in the clip. Her drawing is featured on the album's back cover.

Carey added that the second half of the album's title, "The Elusive Chanteuse," is a nickname she's adopted recently, following other personas like "Mimi" and "MC."
  • Summarizing the record's concept, Carey said: "This album is a reflection of some of the peaks and valleys that made me who I am today. I've always known me. I am Mariah."

Come on, step inside, and you will realize
Tell me what you need, tell me what to be
    What's your vision?
You'll see, what do you expect of me?
    I can't live that lie
    Hate!

I sing my words, I'm fucked at dealing
with your life's Dead Bodies Everywhere
    You

Really want me to be a good son why?
You make me feel like no one
Let me strip the plain, let me not give in
Free me of your life, inside my heart dies
Your dreams never achieved, don't lay that shit on me
    Let me live my life

    Hate!
I sing my words, I'm fucked at dealing
With your life's dead bodies everywhere

    You!
Really want me to be a good son, why?
You make me feel like no one
You want me to be, something I can never ever be!
I sing my words, I thought that didn't

  • This song tells how lead singer Jon Davis' dad wanted him to stay out of the music industry, since he experienced it himself. He wanted Jon to "become something I can never ever be" as depicted in the lyrics. Jon Davis told Artist Direct : " It's about me working in the mortuary at the coroner's office [Laughs]. It's also about my parents not wanting me to be a musician." (thanks, Danny - Clifton, NJ)
  • Korn are about sound more than anything else, and Brian "Head" Welch's high chime-y melody plus James "Munky" Shaffer's Peter Frampton-esque guitar talkbox was a memorable combination. Welch recalled to Artist Direct: "I was going for a toy box sound. You open up a jewelry box or one of those little kid things and it does that sound. It's all pretty. Then, the dark thing Munky did with the effect is chilling. That eerie, evil sound with that toy box thing was one-of-a-kind. I love that."

    Platinum Lyrics

    My disposition permeates
The room when I walk in the place
    I'm sorry!
By calculation I'm way too much
    Pretentiously I bitch a buck
    But you bought it!
    I can't exceed my reputation
A small town girl with compensation
    Explorin' all my possibilities
Well don't you know I'll blaze a trail
    But hell
    You can come with me

    What doesn't kill you
    Only makes you blonder
    My heels and my hotel
    They just got taller
    Somethin' bout Platinum irrefutably
    Looks as good on records
    As it does on me

    Historically real men prefer
The Marilyns with curls and curves
    and I've got it!
    Genetically or chemically
As long as it contains some bleach
    I want it!

You don't need to be a fighter
Honey, just go one shade lighter
    You'll acquire everything you want
    When your roots grow out
    And things go South
Hey, go back to the salon!

    What doesn't kill you
    Only makes you blonder
    My heels and my hotel
    They just got taller
    Somethin' bout platinum irrefutably
Looks as good on records as it does on me

    Hey! What doesn't kill you
    Only makes you blonder
In fact, my heels and my hotel
    They just got taller

    Platinum
  • This blond-ambition anthem is the title track of Miranda Lambert's fifth album. During an interview with Billboard magazine the comment was made that "it might seem cocky" to name a record 'Platinum,' though all of Lambert's previous long players have indeed gone platinum.

"That's not what I'm thinking," she responded. "I mean, yeah, I'd love that - Mom says, 'Say it as though it's so.' I hope all my albums go platinum. But it's more about my life and my lifestyle." Which means, broadly: "Platinum is a lot of things: It's hair, it's diamonds and platinum, it's Bud Light Platinum, it's the color of an Airstream."
  • Lambert wrote this song with Nicolle Galyon and Natalie Hemby in her condo in Nashville on Music Row. She told Billboard: "The lyrics are funny, two of us are blonde, and we're just talking about stuff like that, 'can you believe we're sitting in a high-rise condo right now, from where we all came from?'"
  • The song features background vocals by Nicolle Galyon, Season 2 The Voice contestant Gwen Sebastian who sings with Blake Shelton on the road, and Aubrie Sellers, whose mother is Lee Ann Womack and stepfather Platinum producer Frank Liddell.

Lambert recalled: "I wanted it to be like a bunch of girls gossiping. Some people get somewhere just by putting on a lower cut shirt and making there hair a little blonder. That's how some people do it, and that's fine too, whatever it takes. But I wanted that feel in the song when we cut it, 'let's get some girls in here and see what it sounds like it.'"

"We just got in there and got some cocktails and started talking and singing, and that's what the songs supposed to be like," she added, "a gossipy girls song and kind of an anthem."
  • The Platinum album sold 179,000 units in its first week, to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 - the first time Lambert had topped the all-genre chart.

The LP also reached the summit of Billboard Top Country Albums, making the Lambert the first artist in the history of the chart to see all of their first five albums debut at #1.
  • The initial spark of inspiration for the song came from Galyon. "It started off with Nicolle. She had a line, 'What doesn't kill you only makes you blonder,'" Hemby told Billboard magazine. "Miranda had one that said 'My heels and my hotels - they just got taller.' That made me laugh out loud."

    Hey
    Don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
    Just try your best
    Try everything you can
And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away

    [Chorus]
    It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in The Middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right

    Hey
You know they're all the same
You know you're doing better on your own so don't buy in
    Live right now
    Just be yourself
It doesn't matter if that's good enough for someone else

    [Chorus x2]

    Hey
    Don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
    Just do your best

In an interview NME, Jim Adkins remembered reading an email from a young fan who wrote she didn't fit in with the punk crowd at school because she "wasn't punk enough for them." He explained: "The tenet of the punk ideal - or, you know, the alternative, outside-the-mainstream, kind of ideal - is that you think yourself being more accepting ... I guess that tune was kind of a reaction to that, like you don't want to be friends with them anyway."
  • This was the breakout hit for Jimmy Eat World, who released their first album in 1994. The song climbed to #1 on the Modern Rock chart in 2001 and made #5 on the Hot 100 in the summer of 2002. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The song's music video was a three-minute coming-of-age flick directed by Paul Vedor. It featured a fresh-faced fully clothed teenage boy played by Josh Keleher, who attends a cool house party at which Jimmy Eat World are playing. The shindig is "clothing optional" and everyone, except the band, are in their underwear. The clip received plenty of play on MTV, especially on Total Request Live. Frontman Jim Adkins recalled to Billboard magazine in 2013 that the clip's concept was pretty much Vedor's. "It was a leap of trust to work with him," he added, "because it could've ended up... He tastefully told the story a little bit on the edge. But it could've gone really bad. We just had to trust him and it worked out."
  • For a long time, frontman Jim Adkins thought this song was too simple to take seriously. He told NME: "There's definitely a stigma, I think, when you're working that if something is too easy, it's not earned, you know... you develop your idea quickly, it's not earned. So I thought 'Middle' was kind of not as good as some of the other songs because I hadn't like sweat over it so much. But I mean you gotta - sometimes you gotta let that go and be cool with it."
  • Everyone had a good time making this song, including one guy who was enjoying himself a little too much. Adkins laughed: "He was having a hard time in the heat hanging out with a bunch of scantily clad ladies."
  • Drummer Zach Lind credits the album's producer, Mark Trombino, for honoring the simplicity of the song while finding ways to make it interesting. He told NME: "He was really great at like finding these cool, little sort of sonic textures to put in different places. It might not have the same kind of movement from one part to the next if you don't have those subtle things in there."
  • This was one of Taylor Swift's favorite songs when she was growing up. "I felt comforted by it, because I never felt like I really fit perfectly into any clique at school," she told Rolling Stone.

    Priscilla Lyrics

We look we got it made, don't we?
    Permanent accessory
On their arms and always on their minds
Rings, we gotta wear the real big rings
    Big smiles like figurines
Big hair for the real big kind
When they turn it on and slick back their hair
We turn around and the world's right there
Woman to woman, I'm starting to see
What happened to you is happening to me

    Priscilla, Priscilla
How'd you get him to yourself?
Between the whistle calls and Southern dolls
It's enough to put a home through hell
    Priscilla, Priscilla
    He's always in high demand
How do you or don't you get the love you want when everybody wants your man?
It's a difficult thing being Queen to the King
    And I feel ya
    Priscilla

Golden gate, we have to put up a gate
    To find time to procreate
Or at least that's what we read
Bodyguard, didn't know I was his bodyguard
And I shouldn't have to play the part
At least while we're not in bed
You and me share a unique position
Married to a man who's married to attention
Couldn't think of anybody better to ask
How to be the first to make it last?

    Priscilla, Priscilla
How'd you get him to yourself?
Between the whistle calls and Southern dolls
It's enough to put a home through hell
    Priscilla, Priscilla
    He's always in high demand
How do you or don't you get the love you want when everybody wants your man
It's a difficult thing being Queen to the King
    And I feel ya
    Priscilla

'Cause when they turn it on and slick back their hair
We turn around and the world's right there
Woman to woman, I'm starting to see
What happened to you is happenin' to me

    Priscilla, Priscilla
How'd you get him to yourself?
Between the whistle calls and Southern dolls
It's enough to put a home, a home through hell
    Priscilla, Priscilla
    He's always in high demand
How do you or don't you get the love you want when everybody wants your man
It's a difficult thing being Queen to the King
    And I feel ya
It's a difficult thing being Queen to the King
    And I feel ya

    Priscilla
  • This rollicking, heartfelt tune is about the tabloid scrutiny that Lambert has endured concerning her marriage to fellow Nashville star Blake Shelton. The Nicolle Galyon, Natalie Hemby and Jimmy Robbins penned song references Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla, but also addresses the complications surrounding any high-profile relationship.

Lambert told Spin magazine: "I think it does it in a fun way, though. It happens, and it's happening a lot, lot more to Blake and I than ever before, and I thought it was a really smart take on how it happens, and I definitely don't want people to think I'm comparing us to Priscilla and Elvis in any stretch of the imagination."
  • Lambert told People Country that the song was inspired by a tabloid featuring a bogus cover story about Shelton and her. Natalie Hemby was at Lambert's Nashville condo, saw the magazine and asked the singer how she dealt with all the untrue gossip. "I told her I had no choice. It's part of the deal now, and I'm still adjusting," Lambert explained.

Two weeks later Hemby sent over this song she had co-written that was inspired by that very conversation.
  • So what does Priscilla Presley think of the song? It appears she is a fan, as Elvis's ex-wife took to Instagram to encourage Lambert, saying "@LisaPresley and I are listening to your song 'Priscilla.' Love it!"
