Get Her Back

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton had been involved since they were in their teens. However, the pair separated in February 2014 after eight years of marriage. This heartfelt ballad finds Thicke trying to convince his estranged wife to forgive him for not showing more appreciation for her.

Thicke debuted the song at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards on May 18, 2014. Before performing the tune Thicke accepted the Billboard award for Top R&B song for "Blurred Lines" and thanked his wife for "her love and support and putting up with me for all these years."

The Jonas Akerlund directed video mixes shots of a battered and bloodied Thicke with images of a female model who resembles a younger Patton. As Thicke croons his "baby, please come back to me" lyrics, a text message conversation about his wrongdoings flashes onscreen.

This was written by songwriter Jimmy Webb, who also wrote Campbell's hits "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman." Webb also wrote "MacArthur Park," which was a hit for both Richard Harris and Donna Summer, and "Up-Up and Away," which was recorded by The 5th Dimension.

When we spoke with Jimmy Webb in 2011, he said: "Glen was very, very good at commercializing my songs. He could come up with great intros and great solos, great breaks, and he wrote perfect strings, because he wrote very little. It was a minimalist approach and it just left Glen out there with the song and the guitar. I tended to write a little bit more as an arranger, and probably too much. So I could have done better to have stayed out of Glen's way, I think."

Galveston is a city on the coast of Texas that attracts lots of hurricanes. Webb was on a beach in Galveston when he wrote this. He made up the story about a soldier in the Spanish-American war and the girl he left behind. Most songwriters never find themselves in places like Galveston or Wichita, but Webb found inspiration in the people he encountered in these places.

The Vietnam War was going on when Campbell released this. It was considered an antiwar song.

The Hawaiian singer Don Ho was the first to record this song, releasing it as the B-side of his single "Has Anybody Lost A Love?" in 1968. Ho recalled that when he appeared on Campbell's show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour in 1969, he gave Campbell a copy of the single and told him, "I didn't have any luck with this, maybe you will."

Little Richard, who speaks his mind and doesn't hand out praise lightly, said of this song: "When Glen Campbell says one word 'Galveston' - it shakes me up. It takes me, man, that's the whole soul of it right there."

David Nail covered this for his 2014 I'm a Fire album. "Him being a huge hero of mine, it was very important for me to show that I had such a fondness for him," Nail explained to Taste of Country of his connection to Campbell. "I made a little elementary school note 'check yes or no' and just listened to the songs and held it up to my producer Frank Liddell, knowing full well that he would most likely pick 'Galveston.'"

Nail turned the song into a duet with Lee Ann Womack. The songbird is married to Liddell, and he was able to get her to join Nail for its recording. "My wife is a huge Glen Campbell fan, so she came and sang on it," said Liddell. "I think it's one of the most beautiful things on the record."

Peter Blegvad wrote this song two decades into a music career that included stints in the bands Henry Cow and Slapp Happy. He told us the story of "Daughter":

As everyone knows, a parent's love for their child is partly narcissism. My daughter, Kaye, was 3 when I wrote the song - long enough for me to have recognized this fact in myself and seen it manifested in the behavior of other parents. It's natural, maybe even a crucial element, but the narcissism has to be watched, obviously. (Think of Dr. Evil and Mini-Me in Austin Powers). The comedy of all that amused me, and I didn't think anyone had treated that in a song before. I was vaguely thinking of Stevie Wonder singing "Isn't She Lovely" and Frank Sinatra singing "Nancy (With the Laughing Face)" and I wanted to write something that would express that kind of love honestly but also hint at the complexities which come with that role and responsibility.

The chord sequence is uplifting, but "Daughter" is maybe more sardonic than I think some people realize. It's about unconditional commitment to the task of raising a child, but it's also about the vanity and narcissism of the parent.

This song was popularized by Loudon Wainwright III, who recorded it for the 2007 movie Knocked Up. In the film, it plays in a touching scene where Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen bring their little girl home from the hospital.

It's one of the few songs Wainwright recorded that he didn't write, and it became his most popular, even surpassing his 1973 novelty hit "Dead Skunk" in downloads. Wainwright played an obstetrician in the movie and recorded the de facto soundtrack, Strange Weirdos, which included this song on the tracklist. The album was co-produced by Joe Henry.

Wainwright and Blegvad had toured together and remained good friends, which is how Loudon came across the song. Wainwright typically mentions Blegvad's authorship when he performs the song.

An irony of this song is that Loudon Wainwright III has had a fraught relationship with his children, three of whom - Rufus, Martha and Lucy - are musicians. A song like this one about the unconditional commitment to a child is at odds with Loudon's real life: he was constantly touring and spent most of his time away from his kids. Martha even wrote a song about him called "Bloody Mother F--king A--hole."

This is a very popular song at weddings. In our 2014 interview with Loudon Wainwright III , he explained: "Practically every show that I do now, fathers come up to me and say that they danced to that song at their daughter's wedding. The song has had a big impact to a lot of people."

This song is titled after a cute nickname Johnson has for his wife. Johnson introduced this tune during a July 2010 concert in Hartford, Connecticut by saying, "I wrote this song when I was trying to get this girl one time." A few bars into the song, he leaned back into the microphone and added: "I ended up getting her, too."

Jack and his wife used to live in Santa Barbara, California, and they both went to the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). The part that goes "I was eating lunch at the DLG when this little girl came and she sat next to me" refers to the De La Guerra dinning hall at UCSB. In a Rolling Stone interview, Johnson said: "A song like 'Bubble Toes,' I don't know if I would've written that song knowing a million people were gonna hear it," Johnson says. This Pop song was released as Ariana's debut single. The Bubblegum tune, which was aimed at young audiences who knew the teen singer from Victorious, talks about making the world a better place. The track flopped, debuting on US iTunes at #61 before quickly falling off the chart.

Speaking with Rolling Stone in 2014, Ariana recalled her rocky start. "It was geared toward kids and felt so inauthentic and fake," she said. "That was the worst moment of my life."

Brantley Gilbert broke off his engagement to singer and actress Jana Kramer in August 2013 while he was struggling to maintain his two years of sobriety. This tells the story of a bandit in southwest Ireland who robs an English Army Officer to keep his girlfriend Molly happy after she promises to love him forever. She then betrays him and the young man is taken to jail.

Metallica recorded a popular cover of this song on their 1998 Garage, Inc. album. Other notable versions are by The Pogues, The Dubliners, U2, Pulp and Smokie. Although a massive first hit for Thin Lizzy, this was actually meant to be the B-side. The band recorded "Black Boys On The Corner" as the A-side and put the old traditional Irish Song "Whiskey In The Jar" on the B-side because they didn't have anything else. California Breed recorded their eponymous debut album at producer Dave Cobb's Nashville studio in December 2013. Four months previously, vocalist Glenn Hughes went through heart surgery to replace his aortic valve, and survived subsequent near-fatal complications.

"For some reason I wasn't frightened. I felt like I was going to be OK, but I'm still supremely grateful to be here," he told Billboard magazine. "For me to still be doing this at my age (62) with what I've been through with drink and drugs... There was a time everyone was putting best on me, 'Ah, Hughes is gonna be the first to go.' But he's still here."

This song is about a time many years previously when Hughes nearly passed away during his drug addicted phase. "I was lying on my bed and had all of my friends around me and thought that I had died," he recalled to Classic Rock magazine. "That's what the lyric 'I should have been gone. But I came back for me' is about. It's okay for me to go back and sing about that incident now because it was so long ago. And the song reminds me of Holy Man [from Deep Purple's Stormbringer album] in a way."
