This paean to how nice John Sebastian was being being treated by his girl was one of Lovin' Spoonful's poppier offerings. Sebastian recalled to Uncut magazine: "We started off in a world of 45 singles, so our only game still was three minutes of heaven every time out. That was all. We thought of it as four man Phil Spector music. We wanted it to have that big quality, but we didn't want to hire the Wrecking Crew."

"Our producer Eric Jacobsen understood something about this funny hybrid that we were working on," he continued. "Things like the chimes on 'You Didn't Have to Be So Nice' were our attempts at creating that kind of vibe: harmonica, slide whistles and penny whistles. I hate calling it folk-rock. They called The Byrds folk-rock and then they were too lazy to come up with something else for our band, but we weren't really drawing from the Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan catalogue. It was a time of a lot of seriousness, and a lot of fake seriousness, and people talking about Important Things. And Loving Spoonful didn't really go for that. We were just trying to entertain."

Brian Wilson stated the Lovin' Spoonful's vocal layering on this song inspired The Beach Boys hit "God Only Knows."

Boom

P.O.D. lead singer Sonny Sandoval manages to rhyme "masses" with "Calabasas" (a suburb of Los Angeles) in this song about the joys of traveling the world and spreading your message. Much of Sandoval's message is driven by his Christian faith, which is apparent in the lyrics, "Commit my life to rebirth, well respected, 'cause that's my word."

Sandoval shows a lot of swagger in this song, but in his 2012 Songfacts interview , he explained: "I love what I do, but a lot of this is just a facade. It comes down to us being human and loving one another and taking care of each other. There's so much deception that takes your focus off of just loving people and serving people. I've been on the red carpets, I've been on the private jets. Those are all nice moments and what have you. But at the same time, it all ends. I write music, I play music because some kid is listening. It's not to sell records."

This was the third single off the band's breakout album Satellite, which was released on September 11, 2001. They almost always play the song at their shows, and for many years, they used it as the opener.

Gimme The Car

This song is about someone trying to talk his dad into letting him have the car for the night for the sole purpose of date-raping someone he knows, probably by intoxicating her and taking advantage while she is helpless. Lead singer/songwriter Gordon Gano has said that this song is in no way autobiographic, but rather a snapshot of teen angst that (almost) everyone has encountered at least once. He also says that it's one of his parents least favorite Femmes songs, though they are always supportive of his musical ventures. (thanks, James - Iowa City, IA)

Gordon Gano was expelled from his school because of this song. He was asked to play an appropriate song for an assembly and he played this instead. The Femmes made a reference to this event in a song called "Kiss Off." When Gano sings, "this will go down on your permanent record," he is referring to his expulsion.

This story of heartbreak and deception is the first single from Zac Brown Band's second EP, The Grohl Sessions, Vol. 1. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl both produced and played drums on the record.

Zac Brown had only praises for both Dave Grohl and the recording process. "We have a lot of freedom now that we didn't have before. We can record this amazing music and within two weeks, three weeks put it out to the people," Brown said in a behind-the-scenes video. "We just opened up to Dave and said, 'What do you think about this?' He said, 'Were going to track it to tape, we're not going to use any computers.' I just felt in my gut that it was the thing to do. I felt like everything I've ever seen him do was great."

Grohl told Rolling Stone about his work with the Zac Brown Band, saying: "The band is so good they can be tracked live; we didn't f--k with computers, we tracked live, four-part harmonies around one microphone. Although this song, written by O'Neal with Roxie Dean and Sonny Tillis, is about the obsessive nature of romantic love, it was inspired by two other important loves in the singer's life: her dogs. In our interview with O'Neal , she explained: "Well, it's dedicated to my dogs on my album and I always say they're like furry little angels that come into our lives. And we're so lucky to have them, because they're so loving and they just want to be with you, and they don't care what you do or where you go. There's that easiness that you get with your pets that you somehow don't get with people."

With this song, O'Neal became the first female Country singer to have her first two singles (the first being "There Is No Arizona") top the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart since Deana Carter's 1996-1997 feat (with "Strawberry Wine" and "We Danced Anyway").

When this song went to #1 on the Country chart, it overtook Montgomery Gentry's "She Couldn't Change Me." In response, the duo sent O'Neal an animal trap with a good-natured note saying: "Next time you come sneaking around us, little girl, you'd better be careful."

This song was written as a tribute to the lead singer of Alice In Chains, Layne Staley. Layne passed away the same day Staind lead singer Aaron Lewis' daughter Zoe Jane was born. Alice In Chains was a big influence on Staind. Aaron felt that Layne's death was portrayed as a typical junkie rock and roll death. He thought Layne's life was never given a proper tribute to his life, and his influence on rock and roll still lives today. This song is an attempt to keep his memory alive.

This is about death and wanting to be with a loved one after they passed. The lyric "I'll be with you that sweet day" means "when I die I will be with you then."

Mariah Carey wrote this with Boyz II Men. Carey said she wrote a song that was identical to a song Boyz II Men had written, so they combined the two. (thanks, Britney - Calabasas, CA, for all above)

This was #1 on the US Billboard charts for 16 weeks, which is longer than any other song. Boyz II Men had tremendous success on this chart, with "End Of The Road" #1 for 13 weeks in 1992 and "I'll Make Love To You" #1 for 14 weeks in 1994.

This was originally inspired by the death of David Cole, the co-writer and co-producer of C+C Music Factory. Mariah wrote this to let everyone know the pain she was feeling. (thanks, Candice - Vancouver, Canada)

Boyz II Men member Nathan Morris explained how this number came to be written in the book Chicken Soup For the Soul: The Story Behind The Song: "Everything was going great for us. As an original member of Boyz II Men, we had a very successful first CD and were touring a lot. However, a date in Chicago was the beginning of a very tough time for us.

We were very young, between 16 and 21 at the time. Kahlil Roundtree was our road manager and was like a surrogate father on the road. Our parents trusted him to handle everything, including us, which he did very well. We had some problems with the promoter on this particular date. Kahlil got into it with him about the hotel or some issue in the contract, and he brought us the information in the dressing room after the show to ask our opinion, which was odd since he always just took care of things himself and they ran smoothly.

Later that night, after the show, he and a partner went to the front desk of the hotel to settle the groups room charges before heading to bed. As they entered the elevator, three men who worked in the parking structure adjacent to the hotel entered as well. Once in the elevator, there was a shootout and he was killed. This was definitely the biggest loss in our career, if not our lives.

After he died, I began working on a song for him while we were on the road. Not too long after, we got a call from Tommy Mottola asking if we'd be interested in doing a duet with Mariah Carey. We went to the studio she was recording in at the Hit Factory in New York, to hear the song they had in mind. She played us the melody and the hook, and it was amazing. It was almost the same song I was writing. I told her that I was working on a song with a similar melody and, while the lyrics were, of course, different, the premise was the same. They complemented each other. I sang to her the melody and lyrics of what I had written, and we merged the two. We switched things around to make them work and wrote it that day. The other guys in the group filled in the holes to complete it.

We came back to the studio to record it a week or so later and we only had a few hours to do everything, since we squeezed this in between dates on tour. The photo on the album cover was shot in the elevator on the way up to the studio and the video was shot during the recording session, all in those few hours that day."

This came top of a 2011 Rolling Stone poll of the best-ever musical collaboration. Queen / David Bowie's "Under Pressure" was runner-up whilst Aerosmith / Run DMC's "Walk This Way" sauntered into third place. Despite the song's popularity it was a surprise to many that the pop/R&B songstress came out on top of the rock magazine's poll and Rolling Stone itself put the result down to Carey's fans voting en masse. They said: "The song wouldn't have won if the Mariah Carey fans hadn't stuffed the ballot boxes in this poll. Most of you reading this probably don't think it's the greatest duet of all time. You're probably enraged to see it here. We understand. Back in 1995, however, everybody loved it. Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey were both at their peak, and the song held the number one spot for a staggering 16 weeks. Some of you may feel that it hasn't aged all that well, but the voters have spoken. Who are we to say they're wrong?"

Runaway's Diary is loosely conceptual, centering on Amy LaVere going AWOL at the age of 15, after her parents' divorce.
