No Reply At All

Phil Collins poached the Earth, Wind & Fire horn section (known as The Phenix Horns) for his 1981 solo hit "I Missed Again," so a few months later when he was working with Genesis on the Abacab album, he decided to use them again. "I thought, if we're going to reinvent ourselves, why not have horns on it? This is a song here that sounds like a funky, R&B thing, so let's put horns on it. So we did it, and people hated it."

The song did turn off some of Genesis' fans who were accustomed to their prog-rock sound. It's one of the Genesis songs that sounds like it could be a Phil Collins solo cut.

In the song, Phil Collins sings about being frustrated and feeling ignored by his partner, who he thinks is hiding something from him. Collins poured his heart out on his solo Face Value album and could certainly related to these emotions, but he has never described this as a personal song for him - he was writing in character with a touch of paranoia, but with nowhere near the delusional tone of "Mama."

Nearer, My God, To Thee

Sometimes one or both the commas in the title are dropped from the title of this early 19^th Century hymn. Not a great deal is known about its origin, but it is best known for its relationship with one of the most famous maritime disasters of the following century because it is the song that was played by Wallace Hartley, band leader on the Titanic as the ship went down. In October 2013, the violin Hartley used was auctioned for £900,000 exclusive of buyer's premium and value added tax.

"Nearer, My God, To Thee" started life as a poem by Sarah Flower Adams, who died in 1848. It is said to have been inspired by or based loosely on the Biblical reference to Jacob's dream, as was the Rush track "Jacob's Ladder" a century-and-a-half later.

The poet wrote the words at her home at Loughton, Essex, and initially it was set to music by her sister, Eliza Flower, but it has also been set to the tunes of "Horbury" (1861), "Propior Deo", "St.Edmund" (by Arthur Sullivan in 1872) and most often by the 1856 "Bethany", composed Lowell Mason.

"Nearer, My God, To Thee" was also sung by the crew of the SS Valencia when the ship went down off the coast of Vancouver in January 1906. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England, for above 3)

Jacob's dream is presented in Genesis 28:11-19. Let's take a look at how the hymn's lyrics match up with the story.

By this time, Jacob is on the run from his twin brother, Esau, who vowed to kill Jacob for taking his birthright and stealing his blessing from their dying father.

As he settles down to rest on his journey, he dreams of a ladder coming down from heaven with angels ascending and descending upon it.

God appears and promises the land around him will belong to Jacob and his descendants. "Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that of which I have spoken to you," He says. When Jacob awakens, he names the land Bethel, meaning House of God.

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise.
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.

While there are many interpretations of Jacob's Ladder, many Christian scholars believe the ladder represents Jesus Christ as the connection between man and God, citing John 1:51: "And he [Jesus] said to him, 'Truly, truly I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.'"

Like "I'm Not A Fool" and "Police Car," this very short track was inspired by the arrest of a teenaged Jeff Geggus (the band's lead singer) at a football match. In his autobiography Cockney Reject he gives a far more graphic description than here of the time he spent in a crowded police cell. The good news is they didn't put him away because after sacking his lawyer he defended himself and convinced the bench that the police were mistaken (ie lying) about the public disorder in which he had allegedly been engaged - fighting with fans from his own team.

I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)

This was Meat Loaf's comeback song. In 1977, his album Bat Out Of Hell produced the hits "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad," "Paradise By The Dashboard Light," and "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth," all written by the piano player Jim Steinman. After a falling out with Steinman and difficulty in his personal life, Meat Loaf released several unsuccessful albums before reuniting with Steinman for Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, which was considered a sequel to the 1977 album. This has a very similar sound to Meat Loaf's previous hits, and the bombastic, piano-driven style went over well with his old fans as well as a new generation of listeners, helping make this a massive hit.

The female vocalist is Lorraine Crosby. Also known as "Mrs. Loud," she has appeared on backup vocals for a number of artists and sings at various social functions in the UK. Patti Russo is Meat Loaf's backing singer who sings the vocals live in concert with him, and in the video for the song, the model Dana Patrick is lip-synching to Lorraine's voice. In the line, "I will do anything for love, but I won't do that," the "that" is whatever he said just before that. For example: "But I'll never forget the way you feel right now, Oh no - no way - I would do anything for love, But I won't do that" - The "that" in this particular verse is "forget the way you feel right now." The album version is about 12-minutes long. The radio mix runs 7:58, which was still a very long song to receive airplay. In both the US and UK, it is the longest #1 hit ever. In the UK, this was the biggest hit of 1993, selling 761,200 copies. It was #1 on the UK charts for 7 weeks, and would have been the Christmas #1 in 1993 if it stayed #1 for the eighth week. It was beaten by Mr. Blobby's Christmas single.

Meat Loaf won a Grammy for Best Rock Solo Performance for his work on this song.

Michael Bay directed the video for this song. David Fincher was the first choice, but he wanted $1.7 million for the budget. Seems hard to believe, but Bay - the man who would later direct the movies Transformers and Pearl Harbor - was the cheaper option. Bay did it for $750,000, and it made heavy rotation on MTV. The next two Meat Loaf videos were also directed by Bay: "Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through" and "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer than They Are."

Many music critics turned up their noses at this song, putting it a lot of snarky "Worst Of" lists at the end of 1993. Blender magazine named one of the 50 worst songs of all-time in their 2004 list.

In the movie Spiceworld, where Meat Loaf plays the Spice Girls' bus driver, there is a problem that the toilets are always clogged. In 2010, Jeff Turner of Cockney Rejects published his autobiography - co-written with Gary Bushell. In this book he relates two incidents which between them inspired no less than three songs: "I'm Not A Fool," "Police Car" and "(They're Gonna) Put Me Away."

At the age of 14 he was in a gang, and one day they tried to shake down someone for £200,000, a sort of mini protection racket. They thought it was a laugh but ended up in court where the police spun a web of lies that made this none-too-humorous joke sound credible. Three weeks later he was arrested at a football match. This appears to have been gratuitous. When the first case came to court he was convicted and given a suspended sentence and a £100 fine. Thinking he couldn't do any worse, the second time he sacked his lawyer and defended himself.

Turner related: "It was a very simplistic argument: why would I be shouting, punching and kicking in an end full of my own supporters? I said that it beggared belief." His friend who was tried with him said the same. The magistrates agreed, obviously "because they gave the copper a grilling. Then they summed up the case in no time and said that the two of us were not guilty and we were free to go."

The very short "Police Car" was inspired by this second misadventure. It was actually recorded as The S--tters, but fortunately that didn't last long; it remains to be seen how far the band would have got had they not changed their name. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England)

Khe Sanh

The group is Australian. This was written by their keyboard player, Don Walker. It documents the life of a returned Vietnam veteran. After serving in the war, he fails to fit into society anymore. It is also about the restlessness of youth.

This is a "Bar room classic" in Australia. Somewhere, sometime, this will be either played by the bar band or come on the jukebox, and 90% of the crowd will all sing along and know most of the words. It is also heavily played on Australian classic rock radio stations.

Oliver's Army

Elvis wrote this in 1978 on a plane coming back from Belfast. It was the first time he went to the city, and he was shocked to see very young soldiers from the British army walking around with machine guns. The song covers Northern Ireland's troubles, the end of the British empire and life in the army.

The title is a reference to Oliver Cromwell, leader of of the Parliamentary army in the English Civil War against the Royalist army of Charles 1. Among other things, he established what was called The New Model Army, which was the first professional, properly trained and drilled fighting force England had. Costello's song is a general anti-military statement, it's main target is the fact that the only real option that the unemployed have is to join the army (British unemployment figures were at an all-time high when he wrote the song in the early '80s). It doesn''t have anything particular to do with Cromwell, other than the title. (thanks, Denmark - London, England)

The line, "Call careers information/have you got yourself an occupation" refers to the habit of the British army recruiting squaddies [grunts] straight from school at 16. Many of these kids were from poor families and got bad grades.

Despite the strong political lyrics, this was very popular in England because of the pop melody. A lot of people didn't care about the social statement, but liked the way it sounded.

The piano riff was inspired by Abba's "Dancing Queen." Until the band came up with it, they considered this a B-side and were not planning to put it on the album.

This album was supposed to be Elvis' big breakthrough in America. It didn't work out that way, as songs like this never crossed over to US radio.

The line, "With the boys from the Mersey and the Thames and the Tyne" refers to the rivers of the 3 largest population centers on the coasts of England: Liverpool, London and Newcastle. These areas were economically depressed when Elvis wrote the song and it's where the Army did much of it's recruiting. (thanks, James - Allentown, RI)

In 1994, Costello described Cromwell to Time Out (London): "He was a devil incarnate to the Christian brothers. We used to sing very Catholic pieces, they'd be frowned on today as not being in the spirit of church unity, things like 'Oh Glorious Spirit of St. Patrick's' and 'Faith of Our Fathers,' lots of take on the history of England from the old-religion martyr's perspective. The "Murder Mile" is a section of North Belfast, Northern Ireland where Protestant loyalists routinely snatched Catholics off the streets in the 1970s to face torture and painful deaths. Costello in Q Magazine March 2008: "I don't think its success was because of the lyrics. I always liked the idea of a bright pop tune that you could be singing along to for ages before you realize what it is you're actually singing. Of course, the downside of that is some people only hear the tune and never listen to the words. After a while I got frustrated at that."

This was not the only UK Top 10 hit to reference Oliver Cromwell. Morrissey's 2004 UK #3 hit "Irish Blood, English Heart" also brings up the 17th century military leader and statesman.

The song was produced by the singer-songwriter Nick Lowe, who is best known for his late 1970s hit tunes "Cruel to Be Kind"and "(I Love the Sound of) Breaking Glass." He told Uncut magazine that Costello was going to dump the song when they first started recording it. Lowe recalled: "We went through it all afternoon, and it just wasn't happening at all. Elvis didn't like it and he was getting more and more shirty. I couldn't see why. I thought it was a really good track, but it did sound very obviously poppy. Maybe that was a problem for him."

"Anyway, something about it was getting up his nose, and I'd started making overtures about this,† Lowe continued: "'Well, all is not lost, Elvis. I can take this off your hands any time.' That he wasn't really biting. Out of the blue, Steve Nieve said,'What about if I do a sort of Abba piano part on it?' Complete silence. We knew their records were good, but no one wanted to own up to it. That needs really invite them, as did Elvis, solid consensus was, 'Let's try it.' I didn't think this was going to disturb my plan to get the track for myself. Nieve did the piano part and suddenly the thing went from black-and-white to fireworks."

"I don't think it's quite the first take that you hear on the finished record but the effect was instantaneous," Lowe concluded. "It gave the record an unbelievable sound and spirit. I thought it was pretty good before, but when you piano went on it I saw my nefarious scheme going out of the window. I didn't mind too much, because it was such a great cut. And so Elvis had them massive hit – and I didn't!"

This song was written by one of Anastacia's producers Jamie Hartman along with Phil Bentley and Shelly Peiken. Anastacia first heard it the day she wrote "Pendulum" and told Hartman she wanted to record the tune as she identified with the lyrics after battling breast cancer. However, the singer was told it was being held for The Hunger Games.

"The Hunger Games didn't take it; so almost at the end of writing this album he asked me if I was still interested," Anastacia told Digital Spy . "There are songs I hear that I wish were mine like 'Crazy' by Cee Lo. I feel like that was so my song! 'Lifeline' was the right song for me."

"Jamie wasn't sure if he needed to change a few of the lines that were inappropriate, because it was written about killing a friend. I said 'No, because I'm singing this song to cancer,'" she continued. "To be honest, cancer made me kill a part of myself. He didn't even think about it like that."

This is a political song about giving native Australian lands back to the the Pintupi, who were among the very last people to come in from the desert. These 'last contact' people began moving from the Gibson Desert to settlements and missions in the 1930s. More were forcibly moved during the 1950's and 1960's to the Papunya settlement. In 1981 they left to return to their own country and established the Kintore community which is nestled in the picturesque Kintore Ranges, surrounded by Mulga and Spinifex country. It is now a thriving little community with a population of about 400.

Regarding the line, "From Kintore East to Yuendemu," Yuendemu is an aboriginal community in Central Australia, 250 Kilometers northwest of Alice Springs. (thanks, Dave Malkoff - San Francisco, CA, for above 2)

Midnight Oil performed this in front of a world audience of billions, (including Prime Minister John Howard who has claimed this is his favorite Midnight Oil song) at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The whole band were dressed in black, with the words "sorry" printed conspicuously on their clothes. This was a reference to the Prime Minister's refusal to apologize, on behalf of Australia, to the Aboriginal Australians for the way they have been treated over the last 200 years. Austin wrote this song with his friend Robert Villanueva in an unlikely place. "I like to write songs with my friend Robert. I was weird; we wrote it in my bathroom for some reason," he told MTV News. "I mean, it's a pretty random place to write a song, but I know my fans are gonna love it."

Robert Villanueva is a rapper who rose to fame by posting weekly YouNows with another of Austin's buddy's, Alex Constancio.

Austin also produced the song himself. "It's like a different vibe from all the other ones, but it's still pretty good," he told Billboard magazine.
