Venus In Furs Lyrics

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girl child in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
Ermine furs adorn the imperious
Severin, Severin awaits you there
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears
Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart
Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now plead for me
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears
Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girl child in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Venus In Furs
  • "Venus In Furs" is inspired by the novella of the same title, written and published by Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch in 1870. It tells the story of a man who wishes to be dominated and treated as a slave by the woman he loves. We get the word "masochism" from Sacher-Masoch's last name, and the entire practice of dominance and submission from this and the works of Marquis de Sade, a male author who wrote from the opposite position of dominating women and treating them as slaves.

Today's modern lifestyle knows this song's subject as "BDSM." That's a combined acronym: "B&D" for "Bondage and Discipline," "D&S" for "Dominance and Submission," and "S&M" for "Sadism and Masochism." That last part was originally written "sado-masochism," and in the 1960s was regarded as a mental illness and a deviant behavior, to be treated with electro-shock therapy and abhorred by society.

Even today in the United States, similar to the outdated laws against homosexuality, there are various state laws against practicing any BDSM-associated activity. That is, even using a whip or handcuffs to play with your spouse (even with their full consent!) can land you in jail, or in other states merely selling such paraphernalia (such as a frat paddle or nipple clips) is a heavy offense. This stems from the original association with prostitution - it was thought at the time that no one would be willing to participate in gratifying such "perverted" desires without being paid for it. For this reason, it became yet another consenting-adult, victimless-crime prosecuted by law and thus subsequently embraced by the counter-culture, which explains why it was a popular theme for both underground arthouses and underground bands.

So, with this song and the band's name, was Lou Reed kinky? Probably not, since, as given in The Velvet Underground: An Illustrated History of a Walk on the Wild Side , he called the band's namesake book The Velvet Underground "the funniest dirty book he'd ever read." However, it was the association of kink with the sexual revolution and the counter-culture lifestyle that made it an indispensable part of shocking the sensibilities of 1960s audiences.
  • In the book Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, by Punk Magazine co-founder Roderick Edward "Legs" McNeil, an interview with Exploding Plastic Inevitable dancer Ronnie Cutrone has this to say about this song's subject: "S&M sex fascinated me even though I knew nothing about it. I had a natural curiosity, so I asked Lou 'What's Venus In Furs about?' Lou said, 'Ah, you know, it's some trash novel.' I said 'Where can you get a copy?' Lou said, 'Ah yeah, just down the block there's a store.' So I went and bought the book. I was still in high school, so I'd go to class with my Venus In Furs and Story of O and Justine, and sit there reading this stuff."

Perhaps as a result of the influence of this song, punk rock and the BDSM lifestyle have been intertwined ever since. Many punk bands have made alternative sexual practices part of their image or made songs about kink, and even Goth rock, which carries over some influence from punk, has made BDSM elements, such as wearing leather collars, part of its culture.

Lest we think that "Venus In Furs" broke new ground here, legendary singing satirist Tom Lehrer sang "The Masochism Tango" on his 1959 album An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer. And for a final hit of surrealism, check out this Dunlop tire commercial using Velvet Underground's "Venus In Furs" , created by London director Tony Kaye. Wow.

You Think You Know Somebody Lyrics

    Hmm

    You open your heart
    Open your mind
    Let somebody in
Take a walk through you past
    The good and the bad
Decide you can do this again
But it's supposed to feel different
    Supposed to feel safe
    Safe like going home
    But just like sand
    It slips through your hands
Before you know it your faith is gone

    Every late night call,
    Every morning kiss
All the "I can't live without yous"
And you say goodbye like this
    Don't you understand?
    Do you even care?
If you love me like you said you did
Well you'd still be standing here
You Think You Know Somebody yeah

    It's all just a blur
    The nights are the worst,
This bed still smells like you
    Wake up from the dreams
Catch my breath, it takes everything I've got to move
Yeah it could've been a long walk talk to fix this,
The seas were getting rough, but I thought we were worth this
Worth a try, worth a fight, show you what I know, yeah

    Every late night call,
    Every morning kiss
All the "I can't live without yous"
And you say goodbye like this
    Don't you understand?
    Do you even care?
If you love me like you said you did
Well you'd still be standing here
You think you know somebody yeah

Tell me where did you go, when the lights came up?
I don't even know you anymore
You're holding a knife I could see things better
    Yeah you've done this before

    You think you know
    Hmm
Yeah, you think you know somebody
    You think you know
    You think you know
    You think you know
    You think you know
    You think you know

    Every late night call,
    Every morning kiss
All the "I can't live without yous"
And you say goodbye like this
    Don't you understand?
    Do you even care?
If you love me like you said you did
Well you'd still be standing here
    You think you know somebody

You think you know somebody, yeah yeah yeah
    You think you know
    You think you know
You think you know somebody, yeah

    You think you know
    You think you know

"It's about that moment when you really thought you knew everything about somebody. Everything was going well then all of a sudden everything just disappears. It's that really hard moment of when you're whole life changes, instantly."

    It's the strangest thing
To have you back in my face
    With all those years passed
I guess I just got used to my space

I don't know how to feel
This whole thing seems so surreal
So you keep one foot out the door
I know I said 'leave' but, baby, don't go

    We got so much history
I hurt you, you hurt me
    No, we don't need therapy
What I need is you here

And even though I know I'm right
Just like some lapse in my memory
You're back to me, hand on the door
I want you, baby, don't go

I'm so glad you give back my keys
Oh, I'm so glad you give back my keys
Oh, I'm so glad you give back my keys
    My keys

You got so many issues but I guess I can top me, too
    I'm just fine by myself
But I don't know who's gonna help you
    I'm not no secretary, I'm nobody's Major D

But like a lapse in my memory
I want you, baby, don't go
Baby, don't go, baby, don't go
    Baby, don't leave, yeah
    Stay the night, baby
Don't go, baby, oh, hey, baby, don't, baby, don't go

I'm so glad you give back my keys
Oh, I'm so glad you give back my keys
Oh, I'm so glad you give back my keys

    Helpless Lyrics

There is a town in North Ontario
    Dream comfort memory to spare
And in my mind I still need a place to go
    All my changes were there

Blue, blue windows behind the stars
    Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
    Throwing shadows on our eyes

    Leave us

    Helpless, helpless, helpless, helpless
Babe, can you hear me now?
The chains are locked and tied across the door
    Baby, sing with me somehow

Blue, blue windows behind the stars
    Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
    Throwing shadows on our eyes

    Leave us

    Helpless, helpless, helpless, helpless

    Helpless
  • As told in Neil Young: Long May You Run: The Illustrated History , this song is about the town of Omemee in northern Ontario. In 1949, Neil's parents moved there with him when he was just four years old. Young describes it as "a nice little town. Sleepy little place... Life was real basic and simple in that town. Walk to school, walk back. Everybody knew who you were. Everybody knew everybody."
  • More so than any other song, "Helpless" touches on Young's earliest childhood memories. Young came down with polio by age six, prompting his parents to spend a year in Florida hoping the warmer weather would speed his cure. Ten years after this came the Young's divorce, from which Neil stayed with his mother while his father kept his brother Bob and later remarried. So, typical for Neil Young, the memories represented here are bittersweet.
Speaking of his family, most people forget that Neil's father, Scott Young, was a celebrity in his own right! Scott Young was a career journalist and writer, who started out in the Winnipeg Free Press and writing for other magazines and newspapers. He also wrote books - over three dozen, in fact - mostly boy's adventure/sports stories. And to round that out, his was a familiar face on Canadian TV. So it came as a surprise to him that his son's fame would eclipse his own to such an extent; he was happy with it anyway.
  • Young sang this live at "The Last Waltz" - The Band's farewell concert. As well as The Band themselves he was accompanied on vocals by Joni Mitchell. It is amusing to see Robbie Robertson and Rick Danko from The Band come in too early for the first chorus and then burst out laughing. You can see this clearly on the film as they accompany Neil Young. (thanks, Dan - Auckland, New Zealand)
  • In 2011, Neil Young performed the song with popular indie band Arcade Fire at the Bridge School Benefit Concert.
  • An alternate version appears on Neil's Archives Volume 1, featuring a much more prominent harmonica.
  • Various artists have released covers of the song, notably among them Nick Cave and Patti Smith.
  • This has remained one of Young's standby live songs throughout his career.

    There's no reason
    There's no compromise
    Change in seasons
    Living the high life
    I don't know you
    So don't freak on me
    I can't control you
    You're not my destiny

    Straight Out Of Line
    I can't find a reason
Why I should justify my ways
    Straight out of line
    I don't need a reason
You don't need to lie to me

I'll confess this you're my tragedy
I paid you to rest this
As fast as you turned on me
    Gone for ever
    Vanished the memories
    This face of pleasure
    Are masked by your misery

    Straight out of line
    I can't find a reason
Why I should justify my ways
    Straight out of line
    I don't need a reason
You don't need to lie to me
    Lie to me

    Straight out of line

    I pirouette in the dark
I see the stars through me
    Tired mechanical heart
    Beats til the song disappears

    Somebody shine a light
I'm frozen by the fear in me
    Somebody make me feel alive
    And Shatter Me
So cut me from the line
    Dizzy, spinning endlessly
    Somebody make me feel alive
    And shatter me!

    Shatter me!
    Somebody make me feel alive
    And shatter me!

If only the clockworks could speak
    I wouldn't be so alone
We burn every magnet and spring
    And spiral into the unknown

    Somebody shine a light
I'm frozen by the fear in me
    Somebody make me feel alive
    And shatter me
So cut me from the line
    Dizzy, spinning endlessly
    Somebody make me feel alive
    And shatter me!

    Shatter me!
    Somebody make me feel alive
    And shatter me!

If I break the glass, then I'll have to fly
There's no one to catch me if I take a dive
I'm scared of changing, the days stay the same
The world is spinning but only in gray
If I break the glass, then I'll have to fly
There's no one to catch me if I take a dive
I'm scared of changing, the days stay the same
The world is spinning but only in gray
    (Only)

    Somebody shine a light

    Shatter Me
  • The title track of Lindsey Stirling's sophomore album was a departure for the violinist and performance artist: "This song is very, very - obviously - different for a Lindsey Stirling track, because I've never written lyrics before, I've never gotten to blatantly say what I feel. I mean, all my songs have meaning behind them and I try to express that very strongly through the emotion that I want the song to feel for everyone," she said. "This time I got to literally say, 'This is what I want to share.'"
  • The cover of Shatter Me features Stirling as a ballerina inside the glass globe of a music box. The album has a theme of breaking free and this song tells the story of the ballerina on the cover who longs for someone to shatter the glass and let her escape; only to discover that she is the only one who can break the glass.

"The whole theme of the overall album is about breaking free and learning, so it's kind of my process that I went to to rediscover who I was and be okay with that person and then love that person and share that person," said Stirling. "It all started kind of with the theme of 'Shatter Me.' I had to break free from the shell that I put over myself, and so that's why it's Shatter Me."
  • Halestorm's Lzzy Hale makes a guest appearance on this track. Regarding how the collaboration came about, Stirling said: " It was so important for me to find the right singer for it, because I had in my mind the idea of who I wanted. I love vocalists like Hayley Williams from Paramore and Amy Lee from Evanescence, so I really wanted a powerhouse, rock-star female vocalist."

"I came across Lzzy Hale's videos and Halestorm's stuff, and I was just blown away by the energy that Lzzy has on stage, on camera, in her tracks," she continued. "I immediately got really excited and was just keeping my fingers crossed that she would have a window to come and do this with me. So I reached out to her management, and really quickly, they responded right back that Lzzy was really excited about the track."

Stirling added: "I had actually never heard of Lzzy before, I'm ashamed to admit it. And it's even funnier because she had never heard of me, and we both kind of became immediate fans of each other's work."
  • The song was inspired by Stirling's days working in a rehab center with troubled teenage women who were battling a variety of issues. She explained in a Reddit AMA: "It was a metaphorical representation of how it felt being trapped inside an eating disorder."

    I'm still alright to smile
Girl, I think about you every day now
    Was a time when I wasn't sure
But you set my mind at ease
There is no doubt you're in my heart now

Said woman take it slow, and it'll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little Patience
Said sugar make it slow and we'll come together fine
All we need is just a little patience (Patience)
    Mm, yeah

I sit here on the stairs
    'Cause I'd rather be alone
If I can't have you right now, I'll wait dear
Sometimes I get so tense but I can't speed up the time
But you know love there's one more thing to consider

Said woman take it slow and things will be just fine
You and I'll just use a little patience
Said sugar take the time 'cause the lights are shining bright
You and I've got what it takes to make it
We won't fake it, I'll never break it
    'Cause I can't take it

Little patience, mm yeah, mm yeah
    Need a little patience, yeah
    Just a little patience, yeah
Some more patience, yeah (I've been walking the streets at night, just trying to get it right)
A little patience, yeah (Its hard to see with so many around
You know I don't like being stuck in the crowd)
Could use some patience, yeah (And the streets don't change but maybe the names)
(I ain't got time for the game 'cause I need you)
Gotta have more patience, yeah (Yeah, yeah but I need you)
All need some patience (Ooh I need you, whoa I need you)
Just a little patience is all you need (Ooh, this time, ah)

    No Rest for the Wicked

    My one heart hurt another
So only one life can't be enough
Can you give me just another
For that one who got away

Lonely I, I'm so alone now
There'll be no rest for the wicked
There's no song for the choir
There's no hope for the weary
If you let them win without a fight

If one heart can mend another
    Only then can we begin
So won't you hold on a little longer
    Don't let them get away

Lonely I, I'm so alone now

There'll be no rest for the wicked
There's no song for the choir
There's no hope for the weary
If you let them win without a fight
I let my good one down

    No Rest for the Wicked
  • This is the first single from I Never Learn, an album that was written in the wake of a broken relationship. Lykke Li said: "Every song on the album is a power ballad. Like one of those old radio stations. This is a slow dance; a slow burner."

"I wrote ["No Rest for the Wicked"] in Sweden when I was packing up my s--t, and I'd just gotten out of a relationship and it was a horrible time," Li added. "I just had the hurt, shame, sadness, guilt, longing. In the verse, I'm referring to myself pleading guilty but I'm referring to all of us."
  • During an interview with The Sun newspaper, the comment was made that the piano on this song has quite a hip-hoppy melody. The interviewer asked Li if this was deliberate? She replied: "Nothing I do is deliberate, whenever I create. I simply let go and pour out whatever I am feeling and visioning, like, whatever. I'm in the mood for – which in retrospect can be a cocktail mix full of inspiration."

"I think what I've always loved about hip-hop is the urgency, but the same goes for the blues," she continued. "Hopefully what I do is somewhere in between."
  • The phrase "No rest for the wicked" is a phrase originating from the Old Testament Book of Isaiah verses 48:22 and 57:20-21.

Isaiah 48:22 " 'There is no peace,' says the Lord, 'for the wicked.' "
Isaiah 57:20-21 "But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace," says my God, "to the wicked."

    Electrical Storm Lyrics

    Electrical Storm
  • Bono is comparing relationships to an electrical storm. "Sure hope the weather will break soon" means hopefully the problems in the relationship will resolve. (thanks, Bill - Johnstown, PA)
  • Bono: "It's about a couple in a room feeling a storm brewing in the sky outside and equating that to the pressure they feel in their relationship. I think it captures a sense of unease I feel around the world, especially in America, an air of nervous anticipation. It's not an overtly political song, but I don't think we could have written it before what happened in New York." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Europa Geht Durch Mich Lyrics

    Europa Geht Durch Mich
  • This song, whose title translates as 'Europe Passes Through Me,' is a duet with German actress Nina Hoss.
  • The track was recorded in Berlin's Hansa studios with producer Alex Silva, who previously collaborated with the Manics on 1994's The Holy Bible. Silva is the partner of Nina Hoss.
  • Manic Street Preachers previewed the song during their Spring 2014 UK tour.
  • The song was originally titled "European Miracle."
  • The song lifts its opening line ("Europe had a language problem") from "I Travel," the first track on Simple Minds' 1980 Empires and Dance album.

The Scottish New Wave band were an important influence on Futurology. "I always wanted to make something I thought could live up to the best tracks of albums two, three and four by Simple Minds," vocalist James Dean Bradfield told The Guardian with a self-conscious laugh. "Your love of something is the hardest thing to transfer sometimes. It's like having a parent: you recognise them in you, the older you get. I just kept thinking, 'this has got to come out in the wash.' And it finally did."
  • James Dean Bradfield told Mojo magazine that when he was writing the song's music he was guided by the mood of Nicky Wire's lyrics. "Europa Geht Durch Mich marches to its own logic, " he said. "you have to go with it. Strap on the Teflon and bash the f--- out of it! I was confronted by the presence of the words, which made the music confrontational."
