Rainbow Connection Lyrics

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
Rainbows are visions
But only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide

So we've been told
And some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see
Some day we'll find it
The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what it's done so far

What's so amazing
That keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see
Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

All of us under its spell, we know that it's probably magic

Have you been half asleep?
And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound
That called the young sailors?
The voice might be one in the same

I've heard it too many times to ignore it
It's something that I'm supposed to be
Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

La da da di da da dum da duh da da dum di da ohhh

Rainbow Connection
  • This was written by songwriters Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher for The Muppet Movie, which came out in 1979. In the film, it is sung by Kermit The Frog as the Muppets set out to find adventure. In our interview with Williams, he said: "Rainbow Connection was the first number in The Muppet Movie. It's the one that establishes the lead character. We find Kermit sitting in the middle of the swamp. Kenny Ascher and I sat down to write these songs, and we thought... Kermit, he's like 'every frog.' He's the Jimmy Stewart of frogs. So how do we show that he's a thinking frog, and that he has an introspective soul, and all that good stuff? We looked at his environment, and his environment is water and air - and light. And it just seemed like it would be a place where he would see a rainbow. But we also wanted to show that he would be on this spiritual path, examining life, and the meaning of life.

It tells you that he's been exposed to culture: 'Why are there so many songs about rainbows?' Which means, obviously, he's heard a lot of songs. This is a frog that's been exposed to culture, whether it's movies, or records, or whatever. And I also like the fact that it starts out with the negative: 'Rainbows are only illusions, rainbows have nothing to hide.' So the song actually starts out as if he's going to pooh-pooh the whole idea, and then it turns: 'So we've been told, and some choose to believe it. I know they're wrong, wait and see.' And again, he doesn't have the answer: 'Someday we'll find it.'"
  • Paul Williams has acted in many TV shows and movies, and had a regular role on the soap opera The Bold And The Beautiful. He wrote several songs that were recorded by the Carpenters, as well as "Evergreen," which won an Oscar when it was used in the 1976 movie A Star Is Born. Says Williams: "The best part of being a songwriter - beyond being able to make a living at it - is what I call the 'heart payment' of a song. That's when somebody comes up after a concert and says, 'My mom was a single mom, and 'You And Me Against The World' was a really important song to us.' Or 'We got married to 'We've Only Just Begun'' or 'Evergreen.' Or 'I Won't Last A Day Without You' got me through some hard times.' That's heart payment for a songwriter."
  • Williams was a guest star on the first season of The Muppet Show, and Jim Henson asked him to write music for Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas, which they filmed in Canada where they had a Muppet workshop. Williams told us: "We tried a bunch of things that wound up in The Muppet Movie. You know, Kermit riding a bicycle. When they made The Muppet Movie in 1979, the Muppets were at the absolute peak of popularity. It was a really big deal. [Jim] asked me again if I would write the songs for it. I said yes, but I wanted to bring in Kenny Ascher, who I'd been working with, because his melodies are so classically beautiful. I brought Kenny in and we wrote the songs, and just had a ball. Jim Henson gave you more [creative] freedom than anybody I've ever worked with in my life. I said, 'You want to hear the songs as we're writing them?' He said, 'No. I'll hear them in the studio. I know I'm gonna love them.' You just don't get that kind of freedom on a project these days."
  • Sarah McLachlan sang a poignant version on the album For The Kids, proceeds of which are go to Canadian and American music education programs. Johnny Mathis, Phil Ramone and The Dixie Chicks recorded it, as did Williams in a duet with Willie Nelson. Says Williams, "Willie and I doing the duet of 'Rainbow Connection' is one of my favorite recordings ever in life. The two of us, like two old guys, just talking. It's very conversational. And to hear those lines come out of Willie... One of my favorite voices ever was the guy that did the voice of Jiminy Cricket, Ukelele Ike. 'A dream is a wish your heart makes.' Just this wonderful, sweet, sweet, sweet voice. It felt like mail from home. And Willie's voice is like that to me. There's such a warmth there, an authenticity, an intimacy. So to hear Willie Nelson singing those words was a real high for me."
  • Regarding the lyrics, "The sweet sound that calls the young sailors," Paul Williams explained in our interview: "I think that I've always had a fascination with the sea. It's a metaphor for the call to adventure, you know? That voice is something inside us that says you can do anything. There's a great mysterious world out there, let's go see it."
  • Jim Henson, who created The Muppets, was the voice of Kermit The Frog. He died of a sudden virus in 1990 at age 53.
  • The Carpenters recorded this in 1980, but decided not to release it. In 2001, Richard Carpenter included it on his album As Time Goes By. In the liner notes, he explained:
"As with 'Leave Yesterday Behind,' Karen's vocal on this track is a 'work lead'; the singers and orchestra were added in 1999. Fans, knowing of the track's existence, have been writing me for years, asking for it's release. I try to be accommodating."
  • This was used as the main theme for a Japanese TV show called Where Is Love?.
  • The Brothers Cazimero recorded a Hawaiian language version with the Honolulu Boys Choir in the 1980s. The final verse is in English as a final affirmation of the song's message. (thanks, Patrick - Wahiawa, HI, for above 2)
  • Justin Timberlake performed this on an episode of Saturday Night Live. In the skit, he sings it with a Kermit look-a-like puppet, who gets angry when Justin steps on him. Timberlake ends up attacking the puppeteer, who calls him a dirty name through the Kermit puppet. (thanks, Lauren - Coppell, TX)
  • Paul Williams performed this on a 2008 episode of the kids' TV show Yo Gabba Gabba!, where he ventured inside a rainbow, and found it quite trippy.

    Home Lyrics

    Wrapped up, so consumed by
    All this hurt
    If you ask me, don't
    Know where to start

    Anger, love, confusion
    Rolls the gold nowhere
    I know that somewhere better
'Cause you always take me there

Came to you with a broken faith
Gave me more than a hand to hold
Caught before I hit the ground
Tell me I'm safe, you've got me now

    Would you take the wheel
    If I lose control?
    If I'm lying here
    Will you take me Home?

    Could you take care
    Of a broken soul?
    Will you hold me now?
Oh, will you take me home?
Oh, will you take me home?
Oh, will you take me home?
Oh, will you take me home?
Oh, will you take me home?

Hold the gun to my head
    Count one, two, three
And if it helps me walk away then it's
    What I need

    And every minute gets easier
The more you talk to me
    You rationalize my darkest thoughts
    Yeah you, set them free

Came to you with a broken faith
Gave me more than a hand to hold
Caught before I hit the ground
Tell me I'm safe, you've got me now

    Would you take the wheel
    If I lose control?
    If I'm lying here
    Will you take me home?

    Could you take care
    Of a broken soul?
Oh, will you hold me now?
Oh, will you take me home?
Oh, will you take me home?
Oh, will you take me home?
Oh, will you take me home?

You say space will make it better
And time will make it heal
    I won't be lost forever
    And soon I wouldn't feel
    Like I'm haunted, oh falling

You say space will make it better
And time will make it heal
    I won't be lost forever
    And soon I wouldn't feel
    Like I'm haunted, oh falling

You say space will make it better
And time will make it heal
    I won't be lost forever
    And soon I wouldn't feel
    Like I'm haunted, oh falling

    Would you take the wheel
    If I lose control?

  • This soulful track was released as the first solo single from British singer-songwriter Jess Glynne, who is signed to Black Butter Records publishing. At the time of its release Glynne had already featured on two chart-topping UK singles having provided vocals for Clean Bandit's "Rather Be" and Route 94's "My Love."
  • Glynne admitted to MTV UK it was a little scary releasing her first solo single. She explained: "I've never put anything out and the first thing I wanted people to hear from me was really important, because I wanted to set the right tone, I wanted to set my attitude, I wanted to show where I'm from, what I like. I think 'Home' represents all those things, because I'm not a softie, but then I've got a lot of different sides to me and I think 'Home' is a very good reflection of that."
  • Glynne's lyrics are about putting the past behind, whilst the instrumentation was cooked up by grime producer Bless Beats. She said: "I love that it fits in with the dance sensibility that's so popular right now, but Bless's production takes it in such a different direction. It's a really subtle but strong sound."
  • This was the song where Glynne found her sound. "One of the best pieces of advice I got given when I was going to do music for myself was go away and write a hundred songs minimum," she told Digital Spy . "I was like, 'What the f--k?! Write a hundred songs? That's kind of crazy'. I got to a point when I wrote one song two years later, and I was like, 'OK, this where I want to go'. That song was called 'Home'."

The End Is The Beginning Is The End Lyrics

    Send a heartbeat to
The void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
    For now we stand alone
The world is lost and blown
And we are flesh and blood disintegrate
    With no more to hate

Is it bright where you are
    Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
    And in your darkest hour
    I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain

    Delivered from the blast
The last of a line of lasts
The pale princess of a palace cracked
    And now the kingdom comes
    Crashing down undone
And I am a master of a nothing place
    Of recoil and grace

Is it bright where you are
    Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
    And in your darkest hour
    I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain

    Time has stopped before us
    The sky cannot ignore us
    No one can separate us
For we are all that is left
    The echo bounces off me
    The shadow lost beside me
There's no more need to pretend
Cause now I can begin again

Is it bright where you are
    Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
    And in your darkest hour
    I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain
    Strange
    Strange

    Greater Lyrics

    Bring your tired
    And bring your shame
    Bring your guilt
    And bring your pain
    Don’t you know that’s not you’re name
You will always be much more to me

Every day I wrestle with the voices
That keep telling me I’m not right
    But that’s alright

‘Cause I hear a voice and He calls me redeemed
When others say I’ll never be enough
And Greater is the One living inside of me
Than he who is living in the world
    In the world
    In the world
And greater is the One living inside of me
Than he who is living in the world

    Bring your doubts
    And bring your fears
    Bring your hurt
    And bring your tears
    There’ll be no condemnation here
You are holy, righteous and redeemed

    Every time I fall
There’ll be those who will call me
    A mistake
    Well that’s OK

‘Cause I hear a voice and He calls me redeemed
When others say I’ll never be enough
And greater is the One living inside of me
Than he who is living in the world
    In the world
    In the world
And greater is the One living inside of me
Than he who is living in the world

    (He’s Greater, He’s Greater)

There’ll be days I lose the battle
Grace says that it doesn’t matter
‘Cause the cross already won the war
    He’s Greater, He’s Greater

I am learning to run freely
Understanding just how He sees me
And it makes me love Him more and more
    He’s Greater, He’s Greater

There’ll be days I lose the battle
Grace says that it doesn’t matter
‘Cause the cross already won the war
    He’s Greater, He’s Greater

I am learning to run freely
Understanding just how He sees me

  • This celebration of the victories that Christians are promised in Christ was inspired by the troubles of Bart Millard 's middle son Charlie. The MercyMe frontman explained to NewReleaseTuesday : "One day I was trying to tell my son, because he has a stuttering problem, we were talking, and I said, 'Buddy, people may make fun of you, but you have something inside of you that is telling you that you're something different, that you're stronger than that and that you're beautiful.'"

"We were at church one day and some kids made of him and he was kind of down," Millard continued. "I told him, 'You know what I've told you. That's not them. The enemy may be using them, but these kids are good kids. They're not coming after you, it's just the enemy is taking shots at you. He's taking shots at you because you're something special and he's afraid of something you may do.'"

"I've always told him to set his mind on things above, and he started singing this song, 'You are holy, righteous and redeemed,'" Millard added. "I just started bawling. From time to time I can hear him singing this song in the house and I've thought that's the reason to make a record."

    A crown of horns
    An image formed deformed
    The mark I've borne
A mark of scorn to you

Consume my love, devour my hate
    Only powers my escape
The moon is out the, stars invite
    I think I'll leave tonight

So soon I'll find myself alone
    To relax and fade away
Do you know what's coming down
Do you know I couldn't stay free?

Enlight your sense of thought, of touch, of real, a shield,
    An underground for this coward.
Building a blood in water scent. It's like some raping,
    without judgement.
Boy in a pocket. Balls in a bag. Serve and
Protect you. His dick his gun, his brain his badge.

A faster way to kill them all would take too goddamn long.
Absorb through pores the great escape. Kill that fuck
to show him up. Equal his displeasure now. Stab his
Ass, a reminded past of what the fuck we live for.

    Ourselves.

Arm yourself. A branch. A third arm. Extend your health,
Crawl inside euphoria. Building a blood in water scent. It's
Like a scraping. It's entrapment. Boy in a pocket. Balls in
A bag. Perverted handle. His getting by is a fisted fuck.
A faster way to exterminate them takes too fucking
long. Absorb through pores the great escape.
Kill that fuck to show him up. Equal his displeasure now.
Stab his ass, a reminded past of what the fuck we live for.

    Nothing left to say
And all I've left to do
    Is run away
    From you
And she led me on, down
    With secrets I can't keep

    Close your eyes and sleep
    Don't wait up for me
    Hush now don't you speak
    To me

    Wrapped my hurt in you
And took my shelter in that pain
    The opiate of blame
Is your broken heart, your heart

So now I'm all by myself
    As I've always felt
    I'll betray my tears
To anyone caught in our ruse of fools

    One last kiss from me...yeah
    One last kiss good night

Didn't want to lose you once again
Didn't want to be your friend
Fulfilled a promise made of tin
    And crawled back to you

    I'm all by myself
    As I've always felt
    I'll betray myself
To anyone, lost, anyone but you

So let the sadness come again
On that you can depend on me, yeah
Until the bitter, bitter end of the world, yeah
    When god sleeps in bliss

    And I'm all by myself

    25 Years Lyrics

I vent my frustration at you old man
After years your ears will hear
    You screamed you tried
    It's words of a weakling
And promises made by a liar
    (drunken liar)
Now you pick up that splintered chair
That was aiming for your head
A head that should have been long ago
    Kicked in by me...Alone
(I won't lose a second of sleep for this)
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me

    No
    Ever again
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me

Orphaned to the dope and drinks
I learned my lesson well somehow from you
No tears. Can't clutch my regrets
    But these years of detachment
Have left me with demons now surfacing
(I'm becoming more than you'll be)
You never knew the answers to
Any of my questions, did you?
You made up all the answers to
    My unimportant existence
(You don't have to dump me off, not again)
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me

    Fuck no, never again
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me

    Fuck no, never again
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me

I vow, lest I die tomorrow
You'll never be the father I am
The bastard father to the thousands
    Of the ugly, criticized, unwanted.
The ones with fathers just like you
    We're fucking you back
    Fucking you back
I'm shoving my life right down your throat.
    Can I
Find the guts? Can I feel the heart?
Look at the ground as you choke me up,
    Does it taste like tequila?
    Or failure?

  • This song about Phillip Anselmo 's early life was the first track written for Far Beyond Driven. The vocalist told Artist Direct about the background to the song. "That began with my infatuation with The Melvins and their interpretation of The Melvins—playing things drone-y, slower, and unpredictably. That song itself is so different for us in a way because of its elongated intro and almost a perfect Pantera piece. The verses are so signature f--king Pantera it's ridiculous."

    Tyler Lyrics

And she runs through her days with a smile on her face
And she runs, and she waits, and I wait

    We can drive to anyplace,
day or night, across the state
And in the morning, into Mexico, we will wake up

I find a window in the kitchen, and I let myself in
Rummage through the refrigerator, find myself a beer
    I can't believe I'm really here,
and she's lying in that bed
I can almost feel her touch, and her anxious breath!

I stumble in the hallway, against the bedroom door
I hear her call out to me, I hear the fear in her voice
She pulls the covers tighter, I press against the door

I will be with her tonight!

    Tyler
  • Written by Toadies lead singer/guitarist Todd Lewis, this song is about a stalker in the town of Tyler, Texas, or at least the folklore about it. Tyler is outside of Dallas, near where the band is from. According to Lewis, his family would sit around and tell greatly exaggerated stories about local lore, and the Tyler stalker made a particularly intriguing tale. The story was that even though citizens had their guns ready for this guy, the stalker would go out of his way to make sure he was seen, even tapping on windows to get noticed. The song is written from the perspective of this peeping tom.
  • This song was released as a single, and while it did get a lot of airplay on Modern Rock radio stations, it didn't do nearly as well as their song "Possum Kingdom." Both songs were similar in their creepy subject matter and videos, which contained scenes that would fit nicely on CSI. Neither song mentioned the title in the lyrics, which was not a good marketing strategy in the '90s when there was no easy way to find out the name of a song you were hearing on the radio. Toadies may have followed up their Rubberneck album with a hit, but they never had the chance - their next album was rejected by their record company and the band broke up.

    It Must Be Done Lyrics

    It Must Be Done
  • Townshend wrote this song for the TV drama series The Americans with the show's composer Nathan Barr. The pair spent a couple of months exchanging musical ideas before the tune emerged. Townshend told Billboard magazine about their collaboration. "What I was struck by was that Nate composes on the cello, an instrument my partner and orchestrator Rachel (Fuller) uses, so I have listened to a lot of cello music and I have really fallen in love with it," he said.

"We exchanged ideas (between England and Los Angeles) and I was immediately struck by this very evocative piece he had written, very plaintive. I added some guitar, then came up with some lyrics."
  • Townshend and Barr wrote the song for a scene involving a car being shadowed, but after the episode was edited it was felt it did not fit the scene so was switched to a different one. Asked by Billboard what elements of the show did he want to incorporate into the song, Townshed replied: "I wanted to keep it very simple. Here's this couple whose whole life is about duty, duty without honor, duty without explanation. There are no accolades. They're not living a lie but doing things they find hard to do. Everybody has a part of their life that's difficult to explain. For me it's why the f--k am I in the Who?"
  • This was the first time Townshend had written a song specially for television. However, his tunes have been used on the medium before, most notably as the themes for CSI ("Who Are You?"), CSI: NY ("Baba O'Riley") and CSI: Miami ("Won't Get Fooled Again").

    Milkshake Lyrics

My milk shake brings all the boys to the yard,
    And there like,
    Its better than yours,
Damn right its better than yours,
    I can teach you,
    But I have to charge

    I know you want it,
    The thing that makes me,
What the guys go crazy for.
    They lose their minds,
    The way I wind,
    I think its time

    La la-la la la,
    Warm it up.
    Lala-lalala,
    The boys are waiting

My milk shake brings all the boys to the yard,
    And there like,
    Its better than yours,
Damn right its better than yours,
    I can teach you,
    But I have to charge

I can see you're on it,
You want me to teach the
    Techniques that freaks these boys,
    It can't be bought,
    Just know, thieves get caught,
    Watch if your smart,

    La la-la la la,
    Warm it up,
    La la-la la la,
    The boys are waiting,

My milk shake brings all the boys to the yard,
    And there like,
    Its better than yours,
Damn right its better than yours,
    I can teach you,
    But I have to charge

    Once you get involved,
    Everyone will look this way-so,
    You must maintain your charm,
    Same time maintain your halo,
    Just get the perfect blend,
    Plus what you have within,
Then next his eyes are squint,
Then he's picked up your scent,

    Lala-lalala,
    Warm it up,
    Lala-lalala,
    The boys are waiting,

My milk shake brings all the boys to the yard,
    And there like,
    Its better than yours,
Damn right its better than yours,
    I can teach you,
    But I have to charge.

    Milkshake
  • A "Milkshake" is a girl's sensual energy - what makes her stand out from the other girls. Taken more literally, it is about a girl who dances seductively and attracts the attention of boys in the club. Her "milkshake" is the way she shakes her boobs (the source of mother's milk). It can also be taken to mean oral sex. Bringing the "boys to the yard" could be about attracting boys like a dog in heat.
  • Kelis (last name: Rogers) was 24 when she recorded this, but it was still a comeback. After graduation from La Guardia High School, which was inspiration for the movie Fame, she signed a record deal and released her first album in 1999. The album was produced by The Neptunes - Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams - who went on produce hits for acts singers like Nelly, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. Despite a hit single called "Caught Out There," Kelis was dropped from her label and waited years before Arista Records signed her and released Tasty. Williams and Hugo wrote this song.
  • In the December 12, 2004 Observer Music Magazine, Kelis said that Milkshake "means whatever people want it to; it was just a word we came up with on a whim, but then the song took on a life of its own."
  • Kelis performed this on Saturday Night Live February 14, 2004. Later that year, the song was featured in the movie Mean Girls, which was written by SNL star Tina Fey. According to Fey, the scene was written as the character Regina George's little sister giving a lap dance to a teddy bear, but the director insisted they change it. Instead, they had the girl dance to "Milkshake."
  • This was used in the movies Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) and Norbit (2007). It was also featured on the TV shows The Simpsons, Nip/Tuck, and Ugly Betty.
  • In 2014, Kelis dropped the bombshell that she doesn't drink milkshakes. She said she has positive feelings about the song, however, telling Spin: "It played a huge part in where music went. I'm aware of that, I don't regret it or resent it at all."
  • The video was directed by Jake Nava, who did many of Beyoncé'a clips, including "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and "Crazy In Love."

"Milkshake" was shot in a Brooklyn diner called Relish, with the signage changed to make it "Tasty's Yard." Kelis gave some hints to the song's true meaning with lots of provocative poses and dance moves in the video.
  • The Neptunes' production was inspired by Brazilian women. When Pharrell Williams of the duo was in Brazil, he found himself surrounded by beautiful girls and a type of music that he compared to as "booty shakin' music in Portuguese." Inspired, he created a dance all night feeling for this song.

You Should See You Now Lyrics

    You Should See You Now
  • This Peace, Love, and Country Music track is a particular favorite of Dunn's. "That vocal - going down in the studio – sometimes they just click and lock," he told Billboard magazine. "Sometimes, you have to work a little bit to catch it, but that one felt really good."

"I like the unique twist that he puts on the hook. 'You look better than you did with me,"' Dunn added. "He's looking back in a reflective sense."
